Abstract
Mosses inhabit nearly all terrestrial ecosystems and engage in important interactions with nitrogen-fixing microbes, sperm-dispersing arthropods, and other plants. It is hypothesized that these interactions could be mediated by biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). Moss BVOCs may play fundamental roles in influencing local ecologies, such as biosphere-atmosphere-hydrosphere communications, physiological and evolutionary dynamics, plant-microbe interactions, and gametophyte stress physiology. Further progress in quantifying the composition, magnitude, and variability of moss BVOC emissions, and their response to environmental drivers and metabolic requirements, is limited by methodological and analytical challenges. We review several sampling techniques with various analytical approaches and describe best practices in generating moss gametophyte BVOC measures. We emphasize the importance of characterizing the composition and magnitude of moss BVOC emissions across a variety of species to better inform and stimulate important cross-disciplinary studies. We conclude by highlighting how current methods could be employed, as well as best practices for choosing methodologies.

Abstract
A central problem in evolutionary biology is to identify the forces that maintain genetic variation for fitness in natural populations. Sexual antagonism, in which selection favours different variants in males and females, can slow the transit of a polymorphism through a population or can actively maintain fitness variation. The amount of sexually antagonistic variation to be expected depends in part on the genetic architecture of sexual dimorphism, about which we know relatively little. Here, we used a multivariate quantitative genetic approach to examine the genetic architecture of sexual dimorphism in a scent-based fertilization syndrome of the moss Ceratodon purpureus. We found sexual dimorphism in numerous traits, consistent with a history of sexually antagonistic selection. The cross-sex genetic correlations (rmf) were generally heterogeneous with many values indistinguishable from zero, which typically suggests that genetic constraints do not limit the response to sexually antagonistic selection. However, we detected no differentiation between the female- and male-specific trait (co)variance matrices (Gf and Gm, respectively), meaning the evolution of sexual dimorphism may be constrained. The cross-sex cross-trait covariance matrix B contained both symmetric and asymmetric elements, indicating that the response to sexually antagonistic or sexually concordant selection, and the constraint to sexual dimorphism, are highly dependent on the traits experiencing selection. The patterns of genetic variances and covariances among these fitness components is consistent with partly sex-specific genetic architectures having evolved in order to partially resolve multivariate genetic constraints (i.e. sexual conflict), enabling the sexes to evolve towards their sex-specific multivariate trait optima.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coverage for acupuncture for chronic lower back or knee pain by the statutory health insurance was introduced in 2007. The aim of this study was to investigate characteristics of patients and providers of acupuncture and temporal and regional trends in the utilization of acupuncture. METHODS This retrospective observational study used anonymized statutory health insurance claims data from a sample of roughly four million subjects. The sample is representative of the German population regarding age and gender in 2013. RESULTS Lower back pain was the most common coded indication (86%) for billing acupuncture. Women were more often treated with acupuncture than men; the mean age was 61.1 years. For 63% acupuncture was billed in 2014 for the first time, 37% already had an acupuncture treatment in 2012 or 2013. Premature termination (<6 sessions) was observed in 14% of all insurants receiving acupuncture for the first time in 2014 for knee pain and in 21% of those with back pain. Overall there was a statistically significant decrease in the utilization of acupuncture from 2008 to 2015. Regional differences between East and West Germany and city states were observed. Half of all acupuncture treatments in 2014 were provided by 11% of all physicians who billed acupuncture at least once. DISCUSSION Higher utilization of acupuncture by women reflects the epidemiology of back and knee pain and their preference for alternative complementary medicine. On the one hand, the large proportion of patients treated repeatedly with acupuncture suggests perceived benefits. On the other hand, provision of acupuncture services is decreasing continuously and a relevant proportion of subjects are terminating treatment prematurely.

Abstract
Recent expeditions have revealed high levels of biodiversity in the tropical deep-sea, yet little is known about the age or origin of this biodiversity, and large-scale molecular studies are still few in number. In this study, we had access to the largest number of solariellid gastropods ever collected for molecular studies, including many rare and unusual taxa. We used a Bayesian chronogram of these deep-sea gastropods (1) to test the hypothesis that deep-water communities arose onshore, (2) to determine whether Antarctica acted as a source of diversity for deep-water communities elsewhere and (3) to determine how factors like global climate change have affected evolution on the continental slope. We show that although fossil data suggest that solariellid gastropods likely arose in a shallow, tropical environment, interpretation of the molecular data is equivocal with respect to the origin of the group. On the other hand, the molecular data clearly show that Antarctic species sampled represent a recent invasion, rather than a relictual ancestral lineage. We also show that an abrupt period of global warming during the Palaeocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) leaves no molecular record of change in diversification rate in solariellids and that the group radiated before the PETM. Conversely, there is a substantial, although not significant increase in the rate of diversification of a major clade approximately 33.7 Mya, coinciding with a period of global cooling at the Eocene-Oligocene transition. Increased nutrients made available by contemporaneous changes to erosion, ocean circulation, tectonic events and upwelling may explain increased diversification, suggesting that food availability may have been a factor limiting exploitation of deep-sea habitats. Tectonic events that shaped diversification in reef-associated taxa and deep-water squat lobsters in central Indo-West Pacific were also probably important in the evolution of solariellids during the Oligo-Miocene.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyse whether substitution of phenylalanine in position 124 of the human (h) 5-HT1B receptor by cysteine, a naturally occurring variant of this receptor, modifies not only ligand binding, but also G-protein coupling and second messenger formation. Stably transfected rat C6 glioma cells, which express either the h5-HT1B variant receptor (VR) or the wild-type receptor (WTR) were used. In saturation experiments with [3H]5-carboxamidotryptamine ([3H]5-CT), the maximum binding (Bmax) of the VR amounted to only 60% of that to WTR. In competition experiments with 1 nM [3H]5-CT, the following 5-HT receptor ligands exhibited a higher affinity for the mutant receptor than for the WTR: L-694,247, 5-CT, 5-HT, sumatriptan (agonists listed at decreasing order of potency) and SB-224289 (a selective h5-HT1B receptor inverse agonist with competitive antagonistic properties). In contrast, the mixed 5-HT1B/1D receptor antagonist GR-127935 exhibited equal affinity for both isoforms. The efficacy of L-694,247, 5-CT, 5-HT and sumatriptan in stimulating [35S]GTPgammaS binding (a measure of G protein coupling) to membranes of cells expressing the VR was approximately 50-65% lower compared to membranes of cells expressing the WTR, but their potency was 2.8-3.6-fold higher. SB-224289, which decreased [35S]GTPgammaS binding when given alone, but not GR-127935, was more potent in antagonizing the stimulatory effect of 5-CT on [35S]GTPgammaS binding to membranes expressing the VR compared to membranes expressing the WTR. In whole cells expressing the VR, 5-CT and sumatriptan inhibited the forskolin-stimulated cAMP accumulation 3.2-fold more potently than in cells expressing the WTR. In conclusion, our data suggest that the Phe-124-Cys mutation modifies the pharmacological properties of the h5-HT1B receptor and may account for pharmacogenetic differences in the action of h5-HT1B receptor ligands. Thus, the sumatriptan-induced vasospasm which occurs at low incidence as a side-effect in migraine therapy may be related to the expression of the (124-Cys)h5-HT1B receptor in patients with additional pathogenetic factors such as coronary heart disease.

Abstract
A whole-genome radiation hybrid (RH) panel was used to construct a high-resolution map of the rat genome based on microsatellite and gene markers. These include 3,019 new microsatellite markers described here for the first time and 1,714 microsatellite markers with known genetic locations, allowing comparison and integration of maps from different sources. A robust RH framework map containing 1,030 positions ordered with odds of at least 1,000:1 has been defined as a tool for mapping these markers, and for future RH mapping in the rat. More than 500 genes which have been mapped in mouse and/or human were localized with respect to the rat RH framework, allowing the construction of detailed rat-mouse and rat-human comparative maps and illustrating the power of the RH approach for comparative mapping.
