Abstract
BACKGROUND The current study presents the effort of a global collaborative group to review the management and outcomes of malignant tumors of the skull base worldwide. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 28 institutions contributed data on 3061 patients. Analysis evaluated clinical variables, survival outcomes, and multivariable factors associated with outcomes. RESULTS The median age was 56 years (IQR 44-67). The open surgical approach was used in 55% (n = 1680) of cases, endoscopic resection was performed in 36% (n = 1087), and the combined approach in 9.6% (n = 294). With a median follow-up of 7.1 years, the 5-year OS DSS and RFS were 65%, 71.7% and 53%, respectively. On multivariable analysis, older age, comorbidities, histology, dural/intracranial involvement, positive margins, advanced stage, and primary site were independent prognostic factors for OS, DSS, and RFS. Adjuvant RT was a protective prognostic factor. CONCLUSION The progress across various disciplines may have contributed to improved OS and DSS in this study compared to previous reports.

Assisted reproductive techniques and subsequent risk of asthma and allergic rhinitis in offspring: a nationwide birth cohort study in South Korea. EUROPEAN REVIEW FOR MEDICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCES 2024; 28:2737-2749. [PMID: 38639513 DOI: 10.26355/eurrev_202404_35902] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 04/20/2024]
Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between assisted reproductive techniques (ART) and the risk of asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) is controversial. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between ART and the risk of asthma and AR in a nationwide, large-scale birth cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study utilized the National Health Insurance Service data in South Korea to conduct a nationwide, large-scale, population-based birth cohort. We included all infants born between 2017 and 2018. AR, asthma, food allergies, and atopic dermatitis were defined using the International Classification of Diseases tenth edition codes. Asthma was classified as allergic or non-allergic based on accompanying allergic diseases (AR, food allergy, or atopic dermatitis). Using 1:10 propensity score matching, we compared infants conceived through ART with those conceived naturally (non-ART). After matching, logistic regression was used to compare the hazard ratio for asthma and AR between the two groups. RESULTS We included 543,178 infants [male infants, 280,194 (51.38%)]. After matching, 8,925 and 74,229 infants were selected for the ART and non-ART groups, respectively. The ART group showed a decreased risk of asthma in the offspring [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 0.45; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.41-0.48]. Similarly, for AR, being conceived by ART was associated with a decreased risk of AR (aHR, 0.25; 95% CI, 0.12-0.37). ART offspring showed a decreased risk of asthma and AR in offspring compared to that observed in non-ART offspring. CONCLUSIONS Our study offers important insights for clinicians, researchers, and parents regarding the health outcomes of ART-conceived infants and enhances our understanding of ART's impact on respiratory health.

Ameliorating effect of 2'-Fucosyllactose and 6'-Sialyllactose on lipopolysaccharide-induced intestinal inflammation. J Dairy Sci 2024:S0022-0302(24)00568-X. Abstract
Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) affect gut microbiota during neonatal development, particularly with respect to the immune system. Bovine milk-based infant formulas have low oligosaccharide contents. Thus, efforts to fortify infant formulas with HMO are being undertaken. Two major HMO, 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) and 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL), exert anti-inflammatory effects; however, the associations between anti-inflammatory effects induced by 2'-FL and 6'-SL co-treatment and gut microbiota composition and metabolite modulation remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the effects of a mixture of these HMO. To determine the optimal HMO ratio for anti-inflammatory effects and elucidate its mode of action, LPS-induced inflammatory HT-29 epithelial cells and intestinal inflamed suckling mice were treated with various mixtures of 2'-FL and 6'-SL. 2'-FL:6'-SL ratio of 5:1 was identified as the most effective pre-treatment HMO mixture in vitro; thus, this ratio was selected and used for low, middle, and high-dose treatments for subsequent in vivo studies. In vivo, high-dose HMO treatment restored LPS-induced inflammation symptoms, such as body weight loss, colon length reduction, histological structural damage, and intestinal gene expression related to inflammatory responses. High-dose HMO was the only treatment that modulated the major phyla Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes and the genera Ihubacter, Mageeibacillus, and Saccharofermentans. These changes in microbial composition were correlated with intestinal inflammation-related gene expression and short-chain fatty acid production. To our knowledge, our study is the first to report the effects of Ihubacter, Mageeibacillus, and Saccharofermentans on short chain fatty acid levels, which can subsequently affect inflammatory cytokine and tight junction protein levels. Conclusively, the HMO mixture exerted anti-inflammatory effects through changes in microbiota and metabolite production. These findings suggested that supplementation of infant formula with HMO may benefit formula-fed infants by forming unique microbiota contributing to neonatal development.

Abstract
We investigated the clinical implications of the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in patients with major trauma. This single-center retrospective review included 2021 trauma patients admitted to the intensive care unit between January 2016 and June 2020. We included 1218 patients aged [Formula: see text] 18 years with an injury severity score [Formula: see text] 16 in the final analysis. The clinical and laboratory variables were compared between macrocytosis (defined as MCV [Formula: see text] 100 fL) and non-macrocytosis groups. Cox regression analysis was performed to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) of variables for 30-day mortality, with adjustment for other potential confounding factors. The initial mean value of MCV was 102.7 fL in the macrocytosis group (n = 199) and 93.7 fL in the non-macrocytosis group (n = 1019). The macrocytosis group showed a significantly higher proportion of initial hypotension, transfusion within 4 and 24 h, and 30-day mortality than the non-macrocytosis group. Age ([Formula: see text] 65 years), hypotension (systolic blood pressure [Formula: see text] 90 mmHg), transfusion (within 4 h), anemia (Hb < 12 g/day in women, < 13 g/day in men), and macrocytosis were significantly associated with 30-day mortality (adjusted HR = 1.4; 95% confidence interval 1.01-1.94; p = 0.046) in major trauma patients. Thus, initial macrocytosis independently predicted 30-day mortality in patients with major trauma at a Level I trauma center.

Saturation of Fishbone Instability by Self-Generated Zonal Flows in Tokamak Plasmas. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:075101. Abstract
Gyrokinetic simulations of the fishbone instability in DIII-D tokamak plasmas find that self-generated zonal flows can dominate the nonlinear saturation by preventing coherent structures from persisting or drifting in the energetic particle phase space when the mode frequency down-chirps. Results from the simulation with zonal flows agree quantitatively, for the first time, with experimental measurements of the fishbone saturation amplitude and energetic particle transport. Moreover, the fishbone-induced zonal flows are likely responsible for the formation of an internal transport barrier that was observed after fishbone bursts in this DIII-D experiment. Finally, gyrokinetic simulations of a related ITER baseline scenario show that the fishbone induces insignificant energetic particle redistribution and may enable high performance scenarios in ITER burning plasma experiments.

Abstract
Traumatic portal vein injury is rare, but the associated mortality rate ranges from 50% to 70%. The management of this injury is difficult and remains controversial. In this case report, we describe the successful endovascular treatment of an obstruction that developed following the surgical repair of a traumatic portal vein injury. A man in his mid-40s who had been injured in a car accident presented to our trauma center with abdominal pain, abdominal distension, and open wounds over both knees. Emergency laparotomy revealed a longitudinal rupture from the upper border of the pancreas to the mid-portion of the portal vein; his hemorrhage was successfully controlled surgically. However, postoperative abdominal computed tomography imaging revealed portal vein obstruction. One week after admission to the intensive care unit, an endovascular stent was successfully inserted into the patient's portal vein via a percutaneous transhepatic approach. The associated injuries, including the distal common bile duct obstruction, were successfully managed by choledochojejunostomy. The patient's postoperative recovery was uneventful. Thus, endovascular stent placement is an effective and safe means of treating an obstruction following the surgical repair of a traumatic portal vein injury.

Search for Boosted Dark Matter in COSINE-100. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2023; 131:201802. Abstract
We search for energetic electron recoil signals induced by boosted dark matter (BDM) from the galactic center using the COSINE-100 array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The signal would be an excess of events with energies above 4 MeV over the well-understood background. Because no excess of events are observed in a 97.7 kg·yr exposure, we set limits on BDM interactions under a variety of hypotheses. Notably, we explored the dark photon parameter space, leading to competitive limits compared to direct dark photon search experiments, particularly for dark photon masses below 4 MeV and considering the invisible decay mode. Furthermore, by comparing our results with a previous BDM search conducted by the Super-Kamionkande experiment, we found that the COSINE-100 detector has advantages in searching for low-mass dark matter. This analysis demonstrates the potential of the COSINE-100 detector to search for MeV electron recoil signals produced by the dark sector particle interactions.

Synaptic Activity Causes Minute-scale Changes in BAF Complex Composition and Function. BIORXIV : THE PREPRINT SERVER FOR BIOLOGY 2023:2023.10.13.562244. Abstract
Genes encoding subunits of the SWI/SNF or BAF ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex are among the most enriched for deleterious de novo mutations in intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorder, but the causative molecular pathways are not fully known 1,2 . Synaptic activity in neurons is critical for learning and memory and proper neural development 3 . Neural activity prompts calcium influx and transcription within minutes, facilitated in the nucleus by various transcription factors (TFs) and chromatin modifiers 4 . While BAF is required for activity-dependent developmental processes such as dendritic outgrowth 5-7 , the immediate molecular consequences of neural activity on BAF complexes and their functions are unknown. Here we mapped minute-scale biochemical consequences of neural activity, modeled by membrane depolarization of embryonic mouse primary cortical neurons, on BAF complexes. We used acute chemical perturbations of BAF ATPase activity and kinase signaling to define the activity-dependent effects on BAF complexes and activity-dependent BAF functions. Our studies found that BAF complexes change in subunit composition and are selectively phosphorylated within 10 minutes of depolarization. Increased levels of the core PBAF subunit Baf200/ Arid2 , uniquely containing an RFX-like DNA-binding domain, are concurrent with ATPase-dependent opening of chromatin at RFX/X-box motifs. Changes in BAF composition and phosphorylation lead to the regulation of chromatin accessibility for critical neurogenesis TFs. These biochemical effects are a convergent phenomenon downstream of multiple growth factor signaling pathways in mouse neurons and fibroblasts suggesting that BAF integrates signaling information from the membrane. In support of such a membrane-to-nucleus signaling cascade, we also identified a BAF-interacting kinase, Dclk2, whose inhibition attenuates BAF phosphorylation selectively. Our findings support a direct role of BAF complexes in responding to synaptic activity to regulate TF binding and transcription.

Abstract
We report the direct observation of muon neutrino interactions with the SND@LHC detector at the Large Hadron Collider. A dataset of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13.6 TeV collected by SND@LHC in 2022 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.8 fb^{-1}. The search is based on information from the active electronic components of the SND@LHC detector, which covers the pseudorapidity region of 7.2<η<8.4, inaccessible to the other experiments at the collider. Muon neutrino candidates are identified through their charged-current interaction topology, with a track propagating through the entire length of the muon detector. After selection cuts, 8 ν_{μ} interaction candidate events remain with an estimated background of 0.086 events, yielding a significance of about 7 standard deviations for the observed ν_{μ} signal.

Abstract
The β-delayed proton decay of ^{13}O has previously been studied, but the direct observation of β-delayed 3αp decay has not been reported. Rare 3αp events from the decay of excited states in ^{13}N^{⋆} provide a sensitive probe of cluster configurations in ^{13}N. To measure the low-energy products following β-delayed 3αp decay, the Texas Active Target (TexAT) time projection chamber was employed using the one-at-a-time β-delayed charged-particle spectroscopy technique at the Cyclotron Institute, Texas A&M University. A total of 1.9×10^{5} ^{13}O implantations were made inside the TexAT time projection chamber. A total of 149 3αp events were observed, yielding a β-delayed 3αp branching ratio of 0.078(6)%. Four previously unknown α-decaying excited states were observed in ^{13}N at 11.3, 12.4, 13.1, and 13.7 MeV decaying via the 3α+p channel.

Objectives
Conflicting results regarding sex-based differences in the outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients have been reported. Furthermore, no study has examined whether differences in in-hospital interventions and courses are driven by sex differences. This study evaluated the effect of sex on the in-hospital course of these patients as well as the survival rates and long-term neurological outcomes of comatose OHCA patients treated with targeted temperature management (TTM).
Methods
We retrospectively analyzed the Korean Hypothermia Network prospective registry composed of data collected from 22 hospitals in Korea between October 2015 and December 2018. To evaluate the effect of sex on patient outcomes, we created various multivariate logistic regression models including baseline characteristics, resuscitation, and in-hospital care variables with an interaction term (age × sex). We also performed a stratified analysis of different age groups (less than 50 years of age and older). Regarding the difference in in-hospital courses, we compared daily total and SOFA sub-scores between the sexes and analyzed whether the decision regarding early cardiac interventions and limitations in in-hospital care were associated with sex.
Results
Among 1339 patients included in the study, 952 were men and 387 were women. There were no differences in age or modified comorbidity index values between the gender groups. Women were more likely to experience cardiac arrest at home and unwitnessed arrests, whereas men were more likely to have shockable initial rhythm, cardiac cause arrest, and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) on initial electrocardiography and undergo early coronary interventions. The rate of survival to discharge was similar, but men showed better 6-month neurological outcomes. After adjusting for confounders, the male sex was not associated with survival to discharge or good 6-month neurological outcomes. There was no association between sex and outcome in patients of reproductive age and no interaction between age and sex. Regarding the in-hospital course, the daily total and SOFA sub-scores were similar in both sexes. The adjusted effect of sex was not associated with the clinician’s decision to perform early cardiac interventions. The decision to discontinue life-sustaining treatment was determined by poor prognostic factors, not by sex.
Conclusions
The findings suggested that men had more favorable 6-month survivals and good neurological outcomes compared to women since they had more favorable resuscitation variables. However, after adjusting for confounders, there was no difference between the sexes. This result was consistent with the data in patients of reproductive age. The results regarding in-hospital course showed that daily patient severity scores, early cardiac interventions, resource consumption, and the rates of withdrawal/withholding of in-hospital care were similar in men and women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Acute low back pain (LBP) is a common condition that can be chronic if not properly treated. Aceclofenac and eperisone hydrochloride are commonly prescribed drugs for acute LBP and muscle spasms. Therefore, NVP-1203, a fixed-dose combination of 100 mg aceclofenac and 75 mg eperisone hydrochloride, is being developed. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of NVP-1203 compared to those of a single administration of 100 mg aceclofenac in patients with acute LBP and muscle spasms. PATIENTS AND METHODS Overall, 455 patients with acute LBP and muscle spasms were enrolled. The patients were assigned to NVP-1203 or Airtal group (aceclofenac 100 mg). The primary efficacy endpoint was the mean change in the 100 mm pain movement and resting visual analog scale (VAS) scores on treatment day 7. RESULTS The mean change in the 100 mm pain movement/resting VAS scores from baseline to day 7 was -49.7 ± 21.5/-41.0 ± 19.4 mm and -38.8 ± 18.9/-33.8 ± 18.0 mm for the NVP-1203 and Airtal groups, respectively. The differences between the two groups were statistically significant (movement, p < 0.0001; resting, p = 0.0002). Differences in least-square (LS) mean change of the 100 mm pain movement/resting VAS score between the two groups using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) model was -10.2/-7.4 mm, and the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval was -6.44/-4.16 mm. CONCLUSIONS NVP-1203 is more effective in reducing pain than the 100 mg aceclofenac alone. However, the two drugs have similar safety profiles in patients with acute LBP and muscle spasms.

Effect of supplementation of cryoprotectant solution with hydroxypropyl cellulose for vitrification of bovine oocytes. CRYO LETTERS 2023; 44:37-46. [PMID: 36629840] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 01/12/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Successful cryopreservation of bovine oocytes is very important for research and commercial applications. However, the survival and development rate of vitrified-thawed (VT) oocytes are lower than those of non-vitrified-thawed (non-VT) oocytes. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of adding hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) to the vitrification solution for bovine oocytes. MATERIALS AND METHODS For vitrification, bovine metaphase II oocytes were pretreated with a solution containing 10% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 5 min, exposed to a solution containing 30% ethylene glycol supplemented with 0, 10, 50, or 100 ug/mL HPC for 30 s, and then directly plunged into liquid nitrogen. RESULTS The survival rate of oocytes was significantly higher in the 50 HPC group than in the 0, 10, and 100 HPC groups. The reactive oxygen species level was lower in the non-VT and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of proapoptotic genes (Bax) were lower in the non-VT, 0, and 50 HPC groups than in the other groups. The mRNA levels of antiapoptotic genes (BCl2) were higher in the non-VT than in the other groups. The development rates of embryos (day 8) obtained via parthenogenetic activation (PA) were determined in the non-VT, 0 HPC, and 50 HPC groups. The cleavage rate was significantly higher in the non-VT group. CONCLUSION Supplementation of vitrification solution with HPC improves the survival of VT bovine oocytes and the development capacity of embryos derived from these oocytes via PA. doi.org/10.54680/fr23110110212.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Intestinal obstruction associated with traumatic vertebral fracture is extremely rare. We report a case of obstructive small bowel injury caused by entrapment of the small intestine at the fracture site of the 5th lumbar vertebra due to trauma. CASE PRESENTATION A 55-year-old man fell from a height of 4 m and visited the emergency room of a local hospital with complain of back pain. During the examination, a 5th lumbar vertebral body fracture and left psoas muscle hematoma were observed, and the patient was admitted to the neurosurgery department for conservative treatment. The patient received conservative treatment for 2 days, but new symptoms of intestinal obstruction and fever occurred. A neurosurgeon at the hospital suspected duodenal perforation and transferred the patient to the regional trauma center for treatment. Our medical staff reviewed the patient's symptoms and imaging data and decided to perform an emergency operation because of small bowel entrapment in the 5th lumbar vertebrae fracture and perforation of the small intestine. We found that the small bowel, approximately 160 cm below the ligament of Treitz, was incarcerated at the 5th lumbar vertebral fracture site. After careful manual reduction of the entrapment of the small intestine, a small bowel resection of 25 cm, including the injury site, was performed with anastomosis. CONCLUSION If symptoms of intestinal obstruction are observed in patients with traumatic spinal injury, medical staff must consider the exceedingly rare possibility of bowel entrapment.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
There has been a worrying rise in the number of people with dementia, especially with many of them also suffering from acute myocardial infarction (AMI), a disease with a high mortality rate.
Purpose
We evaluated the impact of dementia on the mortality of patients with AMI and how drug compliance affects this relationship.
Methods
The data were derived from National Health Insurance Service-Senior. The total number of patients diagnosed with AMI for the first time between 2007 and 2013 was 16,835, among whom 2,021 had dementia. Medication possession ratio (MPR) was used to assess medication adherence.
Results
AMI patients with dementia had unfavorable baseline characteristics; they had significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality (Hazard ratio [HR]: 2.49; 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.34–2.66; P<0.001) and lower MPR (aspirin: 21.9% vs. 42.8%; P<0.001). AMI patients were stratified by presence of dementia and medication adherence, and the survival rate was the highest among those with no dementia and good adherence. followed by those with no dementia and poor adherence, those with dementia and good adherence, and those with dementia and poor adherence. The multivariable analysis revealed that dementia (HR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.53–1.75; P<0.001) and poor adherence to medication (HR: 1.60; 95% CI: 1.49–1.71; P<0.001) had a significant association with all-cause mortality in AMI patients.
Conclusions
AMI patients with dementia have a higher mortality rate. Patients with dementia have poorer medication adherence than those without, negatively affecting their prognosis.

Endovascular treatment of traumatic renal artery pseudoaneurysm with a Stanford type A intramural haematoma: A case report. World J Clin Cases 2022; 10:9760-9767. Abstract
BACKGROUND Aortic intramural hematoma (IMH) associated with aortic branch tear and intramurally located pseudoaneurysm after blunt trauma has not been reported. Here, we report a case of progressive type A aortic IMH associated with a pseudoaneurysm arising from the injured proximal renal artery after blunt trauma.
CASE SUMMARY During logging operations, a 66-year-old man experienced blunt force trauma after being injured by a fallen tree. He arrived at our trauma center with a left flank pain complaint. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a pseudoaneurysm arising from the proximal renal artery (localized within the aortic media) and Stanford type A IMH. A covered stent was deployed along the left main renal artery, bridging the pseudoaneurysm and covering the parent artery, successfully excluding the pseudoaneurysm as confirmed using aortography. However, although the degree of the pseudoaneurysm decreased, follow-up CT revealed remnant pseudoaneurysm, likely caused by an endoleak. Subsequently, a covered stent was additionally installed through the previously deployed covered stent. Successful exclusion of the pseudoaneurysm was confirmed using final aortography. In the 7-mo follow-up CT scan, the IMH and pseudoaneurysm completely disappeared with no evidence of stent-related complications.
CONCLUSION Endovascular treatment such as stent-graft placement can be an effective and safe treatment for traumatic renal artery injury.

Clinical Significance of Prehospital Telecommunication Defined as the Critical Stroke Call Pathway in Acute Ischemic Stroke Requiring Intra-Arterial Recanalization Therapy. AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 2022; 43:899-904. [PMID: 35589137 DOI: 10.3174/ajnr.a7516] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/15/2021] [Accepted: 03/21/2022] [Indexed: 11/07/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE To reduce the door-to-puncture time, which is a prognostic factor for the clinical outcome after intra-arterial recanalization therapy, we established a prehospital telecommunication strategy between neurointerventionalists and emergency medical technicians, namely, the critical stroke call pathway. We retrospectively evaluated the clinical significance of the critical stroke call pathway by comparing the door-to-puncture time and clinical outcome of the critical stroke call pathway with those of the routine stroke pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS From January 2018 to June 2020, one hundred seventy-one patients with anterior circulation occlusion who underwent arterial recanalization therapy via the emergency department were included in this study. Patients were divided into the critical stroke call pathway group (n = 75, 43.9%) and the routine stroke pathway group (n = 96, 56.1%). RESULTS The critical stroke call pathway group exhibited a shorter door-to-puncture time than the routine stroke pathway group (median, 87 minutes; interquartile range, 63-107 minutes; P < .001). On multivariable analysis, a good clinical outcome (3-month mRS, 0-2) was independently associated with a shorter door-to-puncture time (adjusted OR, 0.998; adjusted 95% CI, 0.996-1.000; P = .027). In patients with an NIHSS score on admission of ≤11, an excellent clinical outcome (3-month mRS, 0-1) was more frequently achieved in the critical stroke call pathway group than in the routine stroke pathway group (22/33, 66.7%, versus 21/48, 43.8%; P = .042). CONCLUSIONS In our study, compared with the routine stroke pathway, the critical stroke call pathway remarkably reduced the door-to-puncture time for arterial recanalization therapy, with better clinical outcomes, especially in patients with a relatively good clinical status.

Abstract
The mass of the W boson, a mediator of the weak force between elementary particles, is tightly constrained by the symmetries of the standard model of particle physics. The Higgs boson was the last missing component of the model. After observation of the Higgs boson, a measurement of the W boson mass provides a stringent test of the model. We measure the W boson mass, MW, using data corresponding to 8.8 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a 1.96 tera-electron volt center-of-mass energy with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A sample of approximately 4 million W boson candidates is used to obtain [Formula: see text], the precision of which exceeds that of all previous measurements combined (stat, statistical uncertainty; syst, systematic uncertainty; MeV, mega-electron volts; c, speed of light in a vacuum). This measurement is in significant tension with the standard model expectation.

Skin manifestations and clinical features of drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS): A retrospective multicenter study of 125 patients. J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol 2022; 36:1584-1592. [PMID: 35342995 DOI: 10.1111/jdv.18100] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/06/2022] [Accepted: 03/15/2022] [Indexed: 11/29/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is a severe adverse drug reaction generally accompanied by skin manifestations as the first and most frequent symptoms. However, skin manifestations and associated clinical features of DRESS have not been fully explored and evaluated. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to describe the skin manifestations of DRESS in detail and analyze their association with demographic characteristics and extra-cutaneous clinical features. METHODS We conducted this retrospective study on patients with DRESS diagnosed between September 2009 and August 2021 at three medical institutes and validated using the RegiSCAR score. Data regarding demographics, skin manifestations, and clinical characteristics were retrieved through thorough chart reviews. RESULTS Among 182 potential cases of DRESS, the validated 125 cases were analyzed. A widespread rash extending over more than 50% of the body surface area was observed in 122 patients (97.6%) and typical facial edema was experienced by 67 patients (53.6%). Polymorphous maculopapules were the most common rash morphology (106, 84.8%): specifically, exfoliative (59, 47.2%), urticarial (57, 45.6%), and purpuric forms (39, 31.2%) were common. Mucosal involvement was observed in 41 patients (32.8%). Patients with carboxamide antiepileptics (carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine) experienced more edema (P = .014) and typical facial edema than those with allopurinol (P = .021). The RegiSCAR score was higher in patients with purpura (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS Skin manifestations of DRESS exhibit a wide range of skin lesions and can vary according to the culprit drugs. Early suspicion and prompt intervention are needed to improve prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Da Vinci® Single Port (dvSP) was recently developed. Its application in colorectal surgery is under investigation. The aim of this study was to explore the safety and feasibility of dvSP for intersphincteric (dvSP-ISR), right colectomy (dvSP-RC), and transverse colectomy (dvSP-TC). Surgical indication and short-term results were analyzed. METHODS All consecutive patients from a prospective database of patients who underwent dvSP-ISR, dvSP-RC, and dvSP-TC at Korea University Anam Hospital from November 2020 to December 2021, were analyzed. Perioperative, pathological, and oncological short-term outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 7 dvSP-ISR, 5 dvSP-RC, and 1 dvSP-TC were performed. Median age was 56.0 (55.0-61.0) years for the dvSP-ISR and 54.0 (44.7-63.5) years for the dvSP-RC/TC. Median body mass index was 22.8 (17.1-24.8) kg/m2 for the dvSP-ISR and 23.6 (20.8-26.9) kg/m2 for the dvSP-RC/TC. All dvSP-ISR patients received neoadjuvant long-course chemoradiotherapy, including one patient with squamocellular carcinoma who was treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)/mitomycin. All other patients, excluding one dvSP-RC patient with Crohn's disease, had an adenocarcinoma. Median operation time was 280 (240-370) minutes for the dvSP-ISR and 220 (201-270) minutes for the dvSP-RC/TC. Estimated blood loss was insignificant. No intraoperative complications or conversions to multiport/open surgery was reported. Median post-operative stay was 7.0 (6.0-10.0) days for the dvSP-ISR and 5.0 (4.0-6.7) days for the dvSP-RC/TC. Quality of mesorectum was complete for six patients, and nearly complete for one. Median number of retrieved lymph nodes were 21 (17-25) for the dvSP-ISR and 28 (24-49) for the dvSP-RC/TC. Proximal and distal resection margins were tumor free. Four patients experienced post-operative complications not related to the platform which were: ileus, voiding dysfunction, infected pelvic hematoma, and wound infection. Median follow-up was 9 (6-11) months and 11 (7-17) months for the dvSP-ISR and dvSP-RC/TC, respectively. Two patients had systemic recurrence; all others were tumor free. CONCLUSIONS The dvSP platform is safe and feasible for intersphincteric resection with right lower quadrant access, and right/transverse colectomy with suprapubic access. Further studies are needed to evaluate benefit differences compared to multiport robotic platform.

Abstract
The differential cross sections of the Σ^{-}p→Λn reaction were measured accurately for the Σ^{-} momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ^{-}p→Λn reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ=0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show a slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7≤cosθ≤1.0 were obtained as 22.5±0.68 [statistical error(stat.)] ±0.65 [systematic error(syst.)] mb and 15.8±0.83(stat)±0.52(syst) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared with past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Effect of supplementation of cryoprotectant solution with hydroxypropyl cellulose for vitrification of bovine oocytes. CRYO LETTERS 2022; 44:37-46. [PMID: 36625874] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 01/11/2023]

Abstract
The first measurements of differential branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B→X_{u}ℓ^{+}ν_{ℓ} decays are performed using the full Belle data set of 711 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity at the ϒ(4S) resonance and for ℓ=e, μ. With the availability of these measurements, new avenues for future shape-function model-independent determinations of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{ub}| can be pursued to gain new insights in the existing tension with respect to exclusive determinations. The differential branching fractions are reported as a function of the lepton energy, the four-momentum-transfer squared, light-cone momenta, the hadronic mass, and the hadronic mass squared. They are obtained by subtracting the backgrounds from semileptonic B→X_{c}ℓ^{+}ν_{ℓ} decays and other processes, and corrected for resolution and acceptance effects.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to identify the risk factors for ventilator-associated pneumonia in patients admitted to critical care after a torso injury. Methods We retrospectively evaluated 178 patients with torso injury aged >15 years who were intubated in the emergency room and placed on a mechanical ventilator after intensive care unit (ICU) admission, survived for >48 hours, had thoracic and/or abdominal injuries, and had no end-stage renal disease. We compared clinico-laboratory variables between ventilator-associated pneumonia (n = 54, 30.3%) and non-ventilator-associated pneumonia (n = 124, 69.7%) groups. Risk factors for ventilator-associated pneumonia were assessed using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results Ventilator-associated pneumonia was associated with a significantly longer stay in the ICU (11.3 vs. 6.8 days) and longer duration of mechanical ventilation (7 vs. 3 days). Injury Severity Score (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.048; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.008–1.090), use of vasopressors (AOR: 2.541; 95% CI: 1.121–5.758), and insertion of a nasogastric tube (AOR: 6.749; 95% CI: 2.397–18.999) were identified as independent risk factors of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Conclusion Ventilator-associated pneumonia in patients with torso injury who were admitted to the ICU was highly correlated with Injury Severity Score, use of vasopressors, and insertion of a nasogastric tube.

Abstract
The occurrence of trauma is associated with various factors, including weather. We aimed to elucidate the relationship between local weather factors and the incidence of trauma to effectively manage and treat patients in a community setting. A retrospective study was conducted at a single center from January 2016 to December 2019. The study participants were trauma patients in the Cheongju area where the regional trauma center is located. Weather data including average daily temperature (°C), rainfall duration (hours), amount of rainfall (mm), average relative humidity (%), wind speed (m/s), and total sunlight hours per day were collected. One-way analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis were performed. The average age of the participants (n = 3352) was 52.69 years. As regards seasonal difference in the incidence of trauma, there were more patients in spring than in winter (2.42/day vs 2.06/day, P = .05). The highest number of average daily trauma incidents occurred from April to June, and the difference between this value and that from January to February was significant (F = 2.20, P = .01). According to the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLnM), the relative risk is greater than 1 when the mean temperature is high (>15°C) compared to when the temperature is low (<15°C). The trauma patient prevalence was the highest at high wind speed (4.5 m/s). When the total amount of sunlight was long (>Ref. 8 hours), the trauma patient prevalence was relatively higher than the median value (lag = 0). DLnM analysis results showed that the relative risk of trauma patients increased as the amount of precipitation increased, and the incidence of trauma increased when the relative humidity was 40% to 50%. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that high average daily temperatures and long average daily total sunlight hours resulted in an increased incidence of trauma (F = 6.605, P < .001). An increase in temperature, an increase in the daily sunlight hours, an increase in rainfall, high wind speed, and relative humidity of 40% to 50% are associated with a relatively high risk of trauma.

Hypocomplementemia (C3) as an independent predictor for children with acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis: a long-term observation. EUROPEAN REVIEW FOR MEDICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL SCIENCES 2021; 25:5674-5683. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine the altering patterns in clinical characteristics and severity of acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS We analyzed the medical records of 119 children who were diagnosed with APSGN from 1987 to 2018, retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups: Group I (n=72, before 1998) and Group II (n=47, after 1998). Clinical, radiologic, and laboratory findings were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The clinical manifestations, including vomiting (20.8% vs. 4.3%, p=0.014), oliguria (40.3% vs. 19.1%, p=0.016), and generalized edema (86.1% vs. 63.8%, p=0.005), were statistically less frequent since 1998. Pulmonary edema on chest X-ray (22.7% vs. 4.4%, p=0.014) was less frequent in Group II than in Group I. The level of BUN (23.3±19.3 vs. 18.8±11.2, p=0.009) was lower in Group II than in Group I, while that of creatinine was not significantly different between the two groups. C3 level was an independent factor for predicting the development of edema (odds ratio [OR]: 1.034, 95% CI: 1.010-1.060, p=0.006) and acute nephritic symptoms (≥2) (OR: 0.974, 95% CI: 0.952-0996, p=0.020). It was also negatively correlated with an increasing number of acute nephritic symptoms, including oliguria and edema, in patients with APSGN (R=-0.182, p=0.048). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that APSGN had favorable clinical manifestations and severity over the past 30 years. The monitoring of C3 levels can be used to assess the disease severity and risk of complications, including edema and oliguria, which are decreasing in South Korean children.

Abstract
<p>Penetrating brain injury caused by a nail gun is an uncommon clinical scenario reported in the literature. A 36-year-old male presented with a nail that had penetrated through the occipital bone. He was alert and neurologically intact except for visual disturbance. Computed tomography (CT) of the brain showed the nail lodged at the occipital lobe and the parietal lobe, with minimal intracerebral hemorrhage. The nail was placed in the occipital lobe close to the superior sagittal sinus. We removed the nail with craniotomy since the entrance of the nail was close to the superior sagittal sinus. There were no newly developed neurological deficits postoperatively. Immediate postoperative CT showed no newly developed lesions. The patient recovered well without any significant complications. Two weeks postoperatively, magnetic resonance imaging showed no remarkable lesions. The visual disturbance was followed up at the outpatient department. To summarize, we report a rare case of penetrating head injury by a nail gun and discuss relevant aspects of the clinical management.</p>

Abstract
Using data samples of 89.5 and 711 fb^{-1} recorded at energies of sqrt[s]=10.52 and 10.58 GeV, respectively, with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^{+}e^{-} collider, we report measurements of branching fractions of semileptonic decays Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}ℓ^{+}ν_{ℓ} (ℓ=e or μ) and the CP-asymmetry parameter of Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+} decay. The branching fractions are measured to be B(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})=(1.31±0.04±0.07±0.38)% and B(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}μ^{+}ν_{μ})=(1.27±0.06±0.10±0.37)%, and the decay parameter α_{Ξπ} is measured to be 0.63±0.03±0.01 with much improved precision compared with the current world average. The corresponding ratio B(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/B(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}μ^{+}ν_{μ}) is 1.03±0.05±0.07, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton flavor universality. The first measured asymmetry parameter A_{CP}=(α_{Ξ^{-}π^{+}}+α_{Ξ[over ¯]^{+}π^{-}})/(α_{Ξ^{-}π^{+}}-α_{Ξ[over ¯]^{+}π^{-}})=0.024±0.052±0.014 is found to be consistent with zero. The first and the second uncertainties above are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise due to the uncertainty of the Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+} branching fraction.

[PMID: 34482181 PMCID: PMC8424216 DOI: 10.1016/j.esmoop.2021.100249] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/18/2021] [Revised: 07/28/2021] [Accepted: 08/02/2021] [Indexed: 11/06/2022] Open
Abstract
Background Patients with advanced sarcomas have a poor prognosis and few treatment options that improve overall survival. We assessed the efficacy and tolerability of pemetrexed and cisplatin combination therapy in patients with refractory bone and soft tissue sarcoma (STS). Patients and Methods Patients were included in this multicenter, phase II study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03809637) if they progressed after receiving one or more chemotherapy regimens containing an anthracycline and/or ifosfamide. Pemetrexed was first administered intravenously, followed by cisplatin, over a cycle of 21 days, for a maximum of six cycles. The primary endpoint was a progression-free rate (PFR) at 3 months (3-month PFR). Results From January 2017 to September 2019, we enrolled 37 patients; of these, 73% had previously undergone three or more rounds of chemotherapy. Five patients (13.5%) exhibited objective responses, including two patients (2/6, 33.3%) with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, one patient (1/4, 25%) with synovial sarcoma, one patient (1/4, 25%) with undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, and one patient (1/4, 25%) with angiosarcoma. The median progression-free survival was 2.6 months, and the 3-month PFR was 45.9% (n = 17). None of the four patients with osteosarcoma exhibited objective responses or were progression free at 3 months. The most frequent treatment-related grade 3-4 toxicities included neutropenia (16.2%), anemia (13.5%), thrombocytopenia (13.5%), and fatigue (8.1%). Among 26 patients (70.3%) available for immunohistochemical assessments, patients in the low-excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) and low-thymidylate synthase expression groups showed a tendency for longer overall survival. Conclusions Combination therapy with pemetrexed and cisplatin was associated with clinically meaningful and sustained responses among patients with advanced and refractory STS. The combination therapy met its predefined primary study endpoint. Pemetrexed and cisplatin show promising efficacy for advanced sarcoma treatment, particularly as a salvage therapy option. The combination therapy met its predefined primary endpoint, with a 3-month PFR of 45.9%. Pemetrexed and cisplatin showed acceptable toxicity in heavily treated sarcoma patients.

Abstract
The OPERA experiment was designed to discover the vτ appearance in a vμ beam, due to neutrino oscillations. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consisted of a nuclear photographic emulsion/lead target with a mass of about 1.25 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It was exposed from 2008 to 2012 to the CNGS beam: an almost pure vμ beam with a baseline of 730 km, collecting a total of 1.8·1020 protons on target. The OPERA Collaboration eventually assessed the discovery of vμ→vτ oscillations with a statistical significance of 6.1 σ by observing ten vτ CC interaction candidates. These events have been published on the Open Data Portal at CERN. This paper provides a detailed description of the vτ data sample to make it usable by the whole community.

Abstract
Abstract
Study question
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of individualised dosing with follitropin delta versus conventional dosing with follitropin alfa in an Asian population undergoing ovarian stimulation.
Summary answer
Individualised dosing with follitropin delta results in significantly higher live birth rate and fewer early OHSS and/or preventive interventions compared to conventional follitropin alfa dosing.
What is known already
Previous randomised controlled trials conducted in Europe, North- and South America mainly including Caucasian IVF/ICSI patients as well as in Japan have demonstrated that ovarian stimulation with the individualised follitropin delta dosing regimen based on serum AMH level and body weight modulated the ovarian response and reduced the risk of OHSS without compromising pregnancy and live birth rates.
Study design, size, duration
Randomised, controlled, assessor-blind trial conducted in 1,009 Asian patients from mainland China, South Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan, undergoing their first IVF/ICSI cycle. Randomisation was stratified by age (<35, 35-37, 38-40 years). The primary endpoint was ongoing pregnancy assessed 10-11 weeks after transfer (non-inferiority limit -10.0%; analysis adjusted for age strata). Patients <35 years underwent single embryo transfer if a good-quality embryo was available, otherwise double embryo transfer. Patients ≥35 years underwent double embryo transfer.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
Follitropin delta (Rekovelle, Ferring Pharmaceuticals) daily treatment consisted of a fixed dose individualised according to each patient’s initial AMH level (<15 pmol/L: 12 μg; ≥15 pmol/L: 0.19 to 0.10 μg/kg; min-max 6-12 μg) and body weight. Follitropin alfa (Gonal-f, Merck Serono) dose was 150 IU/day for the first five days with subsequent potential dose adjustments according to individual response. A GnRH antagonist protocol was applied. OHSS was classified based on Golan’s system.
Main results and the role of chance
The ongoing pregnancy rate was 31.3% with follitropin delta and 25.7% with follitropin alfa (adjusted difference 5.4% [95% CI: -0.2%; 11.0%]). The live birth rate was significantly higher at 31.3% with follitropin delta compared to 24.7% with follitropin alfa (adjusted difference 6.4% [95% CI: 0.9%; 11.9%]; p < 0.05). Live birth rates per age stratum were as follows for follitropin delta and follitropin alfa; <35 years: 31.0% versus 25.0%, 3537 years: 35.3% versus 26.7%, 38-40 years: 20.0% versus 14.3%. Early OHSS risk, evaluated as the incidence of early OHSS and/or preventive interventions, was significantly (p < 0.01) reduced from 9.6% with follitropin alfa to 5.0% with follitropin delta. The number of oocytes was 10.0±6.1 with follitropin delta and 12.4±7.3 with follitropin alfa. Individualised follitropin delta dosing compared to conventional follitropin alfa dosing resulted in 2 more oocytes (9.6±5.3 versus 7.6±3.5) in potential low responders (AMH <15 pmol/L) and 3 fewer oocytes (10.1±6.3 versus 13.8±7.5) in potential high responders (AMH ≥15 pmol/L). Among patients with AMH ≥15 pmol/L, excessive response occurred less frequently with individualised than conventional dosing (≥15 oocytes: 20.2% versus 39.1%; ≥20 oocytes: 6.7% versus 18.5%). Total gonadotropin dose was reduced from 109.9±32.9 μg with follitropin alfa to 77.5±24.4 μg with follitropin delta.
Limitations, reasons for caution
The trial only covered the clinical outcome of one treatment cycle with fresh cleavage-stage embryo transfers.
Wider implications of the findings
The present trial implies that in addition to reducing the early OHSS risk, individualised dosing has the potential to improve the take-home baby rate in fresh cycles across all ages and with a lower gonadotropin consumption. The benefits in outcomes appear to be explained by the modulation of ovarian response.

Abstract
Abstract
Study question
When is the optimal timing of day 6 (D6) blastocyst transfer between the 6thday (P6)and the 7th(P7) day of progesterone administration in artificially prepared frozen-thawed embryo transfer(FET) cycle
Summary answer
When transferring D6 blastocysts in artificially prepared FET cycles, live birth rate tended to be higher in P6 group than in P7 group.
What is known already
Blastocyst transfer in FET cycles has increased due to several reasons including convenience for optimization of endometrial synchronization, improvement of laboratory techniques and preimplantation genetic testing. Meanwhile, D6 blastocyst which cryopreserved on day 6 after being developed to the full blastocyst stage, presented lower pregnancy outcomes in FET cycle than D5 blastocysts. However, there have been few studies on the optimal duration of progesterone administration when transferring D6 blastocysts.
Study design, size, duration
This was a retrospective cohort study including patients who underwent frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer in artificially prepared cycles from January 2000 to May 2020. Patients with D6 blastocyst transfer on the 6th day of progesterone administration were included in D6-P6 group, and patients with D6 blastocyst transfer on the 7th day of progesterone administration were included in D6-P7 group.
Participants/materials, setting, methods
Increasing dose of estradiol valerate was administered from the 3rd day of menstruation: 4 mg/day for the first four days, 6 mg/day for next four days, and then 8 mg/day until the confirmation of pregnancy. Progesterone was administered from the 14th day of menstruation if the endometrial thickness reached ≥7 mm. The independent t-test or Mann-Whitney test, chi-square test, and logistic regression analysis were performed.
Main results and the role of chance
A total of 50 patients were included, and 13 patients underwent FET on P6 and 37 patients underwent FET on P7. Live birth rate was comparable between the P6 group and the P7 group (18.9% vs. 15.4%, p = 0.775). Live birth rate was higher in the D6-P6 group than in the D6-P7 group after adjusting for age, AMH, endometrial thickness on the starting day of progesterone administration and good embryo rate transferred with statistical significance (OR: 6.716, p = 0.005).
Limitations, reasons for caution
Limitations of the present study is the retrospective design and the small sample size. Caution is needed in extrapolating results of this study because only intramural and vaginal progesterone supplementations were included in this study.
Wider implications of the findings: Even if the duration of blastocyst formation was delayed, frozen-thawed D6 blastocyst may need to be considered for on P6 rather than P7. The difference of live birth rate is not statistically significant. This study should be acknowledged for the underestimation of the difference because of the small sample size.

Ginseng berry concentrate prevents colon cancer via cell cycle, apoptosis regulation, and inflammation-linked Th17 cell differentiation. JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY AND PHARMACOLOGY 2021; 72. Abstract
The Asian ginseng root (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is a very commonly used herbal medicine worldwide. Ginseng fruit, including the berry (or pulp) and seed, is also valuable for several health conditions including immunostimulation and cancer chemoprevention. In this study, the anticancer and anti-proliferative effects of the extracts of ginseng berry and seed were evaluated. The ginsenosides in the ginseng berry concentrate (GBC) and ginseng seed extract (GSE) were analyzed. We then evaluated their anti-colorectal cancer potentials, including antiproliferation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptotic induction. Further investigation consisted of the berry's adaptive immune responses, such as the actions on the differentiation of T helper cells Treg, Th1, and Th17. The major constituents in GBC were ginsenosides Re and Rd, which can be compared to those in the root. The GBC significantly inhibited colon cancer cell growth, and its anti-proliferative effect involved mechanisms including G2/M cell cycle arrest via upregulation of cyclin A and induction of apoptosis via regulation of apoptotic related gene expressions. GBC also downregulated the expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokine genes. For the adaptive immune responses, GBC did not influence Th1 and Treg cell differentiation but significantly inhibited Th17 cell differentiation and thus regulated the balance of Th17/Treg for adaptive immunity. Although no ginsenoside was detected in the GSE, interestingly, it obviously enhanced colon cancer cell proliferation with the underlined details to be determined. Our results suggested that GBC is a promising dietary supplement for cancer chemoprevention and immunomodulation.

Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in trauma patients and associated with poor outcomes. Identifying AKI risk factors in trauma patients is important for risk stratification and provision of optimal intensive care unit (ICU) treatment. This study identified AKI risk factors in patients admitted to critical care after sustaining torso injuries. We performed a retrospective chart review involving 380 patients who sustained torso injuries from January 2016 to December 2019. Patients were included if they were aged >15 years, admitted to an ICU, survived for >48 hours, and had thoracic and/or abdominal injuries and no end-stage renal disease. AKI was defined according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes definition and staging system. Clinical and laboratory variables were compared between the AKI and non-AKI groups (n = 72 and 308, respectively). AKI risk factors were assessed using multivariate logistic regression analysis.AKI occurred in 72 (18.9%) patients and was associated with higher mortality than non-AKI patients (26% vs 4%, P < .001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified bowel injury, cumulative fluid balance >2.5 L for 24 hours, lactate levels, and vasopressor use (adjusted odds ratio: 2.953, 2.058, 1.170, and 2.910; 95% confidence interval: 1.410-6.181, 1.017-4.164, 1.019-1.343, and 1.414-5.987; P = .004, .045, .026, and .004, respectively) as independent risk factors for AKI.AKI in patients admitted to the ICU with torso injury had a substantial mortality. Recognizing risk factors at an early stage could aid risk stratification and provision of optimal ICU care.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The association of BMI with falls differed between men and women in Korea. Obesity was associated with a greater risk of falls in women, whereas underweight seemed to increase the risk of falls compared with normal weight in men. PURPOSE This study examined the sex-specific association between body mass index (BMI) and falls in Korean adults using data from a large population-based survey. METHODS We analyzed 113,805 men and women (age ≥ 50 years) who participated in the Korean Community Health Survey in 2013. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between BMI and falls. RESULTS The mean (± standard deviation) age and BMI of all participants were 63.8 ± 9.6 years and 23.2 ± 2.9 kg/m2, respectively. Among the 113,805 subjects, 19.1% and 6.7% had histories of falls and recurrent falls, respectively. The association of BMI with recurrent falls differed between men and women. The multivariable-adjusted odd ratios (ORs) for recurrent falls were 0.98 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.86-1.12), 1.23 (1.14-1.32), and 1.51 (1.26-1.81) in women with BMIs of < 18.5, 25-29.9, and ≥ 30 kg/m2, respectively, relative to those with BMIs of 18.5-24.9 kg/m2. The corresponding ORs for men were 1.20 (95% CI 1.01-1.42), 1.05 (0.96-1.14), and 0.97 (0.69-1.38), respectively. Older age and low economic level were associated independently with higher ORs of recurrent falls in men and women, respectively. In addition, comorbidities, including diabetes, stroke, arthritis, osteoporosis, and asthma, correlated significantly with an increased risk of recurrent falls (all p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Obesity was associated with a greater risk of recurrent falls in women, whereas underweight seemed to be associated with a greater risk of falls in men.

Abstract
We present a measurement of R_{K^{*}}, the branching fraction ratio B(B→K^{*}μ^{+}μ^{-})/B(B→K^{*}e^{+}e^{-}), for both charged and neutral B mesons. The ratio for the charged case R_{K^{*+}} is the first measurement ever performed. In addition, we report absolute branching fractions for the individual modes in bins of the squared dilepton invariant mass q^{2}. The analysis is based on a data sample of 711 fb^{-1}, containing 772×10^{6} BB[over ¯] events, recorded at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The obtained results are consistent with standard model expectations.

Abstract
We describe a compact and stable setup for detecting the optical second harmonics, in which the incident plane rotates with respect to the sample. The setup is composed of rotating Fresnel rhomb optics and a femtosecond ytterbium-doped fiber laser source operating at the repetition frequency of 10 MHz. The setup including the laser source occupies an area of 1 m2 and is stable so that the intensity fluctuation of the laser harmonics can be less than 0.2% for 4 h. We present the isotropic harmonic signal of a gold mirror of 0.5 pW and demonstrate the integrity and sensitivity of the setup. We also show the polarization-dependent six-fold pattern of the harmonics of a few-layer WSe2, from which we infer the degree of local-field effects. Finally, we describe the extensibility of the setup to investigate the samples in various conditions such as cryogenic, strained, ultrafast non-equilibrium, and high magnetic fields.

Ribosomal protein S3 associates with the TFIIH complex and positively regulates nucleotide excision repair. Cell Mol Life Sci 2021; 78:3591-3606. Abstract
In mammalian cells, the bulky DNA adducts caused by ultraviolet radiation are mainly repaired via the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway; some defects in this pathway lead to a genetic disorder known as xeroderma pigmentosum (XP). Ribosomal protein S3 (rpS3), a constituent of the 40S ribosomal subunit, is a multi-functional protein with various extra-ribosomal functions, including a role in the cellular stress response and DNA repair-related activities. We report that rpS3 associates with transcription factor IIH (TFIIH) via an interaction with the xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group D (XPD) protein and complements its function in the NER pathway. For optimal repair of UV-induced duplex DNA lesions, the strong helicase activity of the TFIIH complex is required for unwinding damaged DNA around the lesion. Here, we show that XP-D cells overexpressing rpS3 showed markedly increased resistance to UV radiation through XPD and rpS3 interaction. Additionally, the knockdown of rpS3 caused reduced NER efficiency in HeLa cells and the overexpression of rpS3 partially restored helicase activity of the TFIIH complex of XP-D cells in vitro. We also present data suggesting that rpS3 is involved in post-excision processing in NER, assisting TFIIH in expediting the repair process by increasing its turnover rate when DNA is damaged. We propose that rpS3 is an accessory protein of the NER pathway and its recruitment to the repair machinery augments repair efficiency upon UV damage by enhancing XPD helicase function and increasing its turnover rate.

Abstract
We report the first evidence for X(3872) production in two-photon interactions by tagging either the electron or the positron in the final state, exploring the highly virtual photon region. The search is performed in e^{+}e^{-}→e^{+}e^{-}J/ψπ^{+}π^{-}, using 825 fb^{-1} of data collected by the Belle detector operated at the KEKB e^{+}e^{-} collider. We observe three X(3872) candidates, where the expected background is 0.11±0.10 events, with a significance of 3.2σ. We obtain an estimated value for Γ[over ˜]_{γγ}B(X(3872)→J/ψπ^{+}π^{-}) assuming the Q^{2} dependence predicted by a cc[over ¯] meson model, where -Q^{2} is the invariant mass squared of the virtual photon. No X(3915)→J/ψπ^{+}π^{-} candidates are found.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Intersphincteric resection (ISR) is the ultimate anal-sparing technique as an alternative to abdominoperineal resection in selected patients. Oncological safety is still debated. This study analyses long-term oncological results and evaluates risk factors for local recurrence (LR) and overall survival (OS) after minimally-invasive ISR. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective single-center data were collected from a prospectively maintained colorectal database. A total of 161 patients underwent ISR between 2008 and 2018. OS and local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) were assessed using Kaplan-Meier analysis (log-rank test). Risk factors for OS and LRFS were assessed with Cox-regression analysis. RESULTS Median follow-up was 55 months. LR occurred in 18 patients. OS and LRFS rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 96%, 91%, and 80% and 96%, 89%, and 87%, respectively. Tumor size (p = 0.035) and clinical T-stage (p = 0.029) were risk factors for LRFS on univariate analysis. On multivariate analysis, tumor size (HR 2.546 (95% CI: 0.976-6.637); p = 0.056) and clinical T-stage (HR 3.296 (95% CI: 0.941-11.549); p = 0.062) were not significant. Preoperative CEA (p < 0.001), pathological T-stage (p = 0.033), pathological N-stage (p = 0.016) and adjuvant treatment (p = 0.008) were prognostic factors for OS on univariate analysis. Preoperative CEA (HR 4.453 (95% CI: 2.015-9.838); p < 0.001) was a prognostic factor on multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms the oncological safety of minimally-invasive ISR for locally advanced low-lying rectal tumors when performed in experienced centers. Despite not a risk factor for LR, tumor size and, locally advanced T-stage with anterior involvement should be carefully evaluated for optimal surgical strategy. Preoperative CEA is a prognostic factor for OS.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the diagnostic value of computed tomography (CT) urography findings of anterior nutcracker syndrome (NCS). MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included patients with left renal vein (LRV) compression at the aortomesenteric portion at CT urography who underwent renal venography or cystoscopy. Patients with a renocaval pressure gradient of ≥3 mmHg on renal venography or bloody urine jetting from the left ureteral orifice on cystoscopy were defined as the NCS group; the remaining patients comprised the non-NCS group. CT findings were analysed using the jetting of contrast medium flow from the LRV to the inferior vena cava (jetting sign), aortomesenteric distance, presence of collateral veins, and a dilatation ratio of LRV diameter at the aortomesenteric portion (arterial phase/delayed phases). Clinical findings, including age, gender, and body-mass-index, were also analysed. CT features and clinical findings were compared between the NCS and non-NCS groups. Diagnostic performance of CT parameters was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. RESULTS A total of 70 patients (21 men, mean age 44.4 ± 17.2 years) with NCS (n=13) and non-NCS (n=57) were included. Younger age (<40 years), presence of the jetting sign, and a lower dilatation ratio of LRV diameter between the arterial and delayed phases (<1.7) were found to be significant independent factors for predicting the NCS group (OR 24.5, 18.9, 19.4, respectively, p<0.05 for all). The combination of the presence of the jetting sign and a dilatation ratio of LRV diameter of <1.7 obtained the highest AUC of 0.88. CONCLUSION The jetting sign and the dilatation ratio of LRV diameter between the arterial and delayed phases can both be very useful in the diagnosis of anterior nutcracker syndrome during CT urography.

Observation of Coulomb-Assisted Nuclear Bound State of Ξ^{-}-^{14}N System. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2021; 126:062501. [PMID: 33635678 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.126.062501] [Citation(s) in RCA: 8] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/28/2020] [Revised: 11/19/2020] [Accepted: 12/23/2020] [Indexed: 06/12/2023]
Abstract
In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ^{-} absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-Λ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ^{-}+^{14}N→_{Λ}^{10}Be+_{Λ}^{5}He. For the binding energy of the Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ^{-}-^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.21 MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ^{-} is likely a nuclear 1p state which indicates a weak ΞN-ΛΛ coupling.

MRI Features May Predict Molecular Features of Glioblastoma in Isocitrate Dehydrogenase Wild-Type Lower-Grade Gliomas. AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 2021; 42:448-456. [PMID: 33509914 DOI: 10.3174/ajnr.a6983] [Citation(s) in RCA: 27] [Impact Index Per Article: 9.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/15/2020] [Accepted: 10/19/2020] [Indexed: 12/13/2022]
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild-type lower-grade gliomas (histologic grades II and III) with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) amplification or telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) promoter mutation are reported to behave similar to glioblastoma. We aimed to evaluate whether MR imaging features could identify a subset of IDH wild-type lower-grade gliomas that carry molecular features of glioblastoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this multi-institutional retrospective study, pathologically confirmed IDH wild-type lower-grade gliomas from 2 tertiary institutions and The Cancer Genome Atlas constituted the training set (institution 1 and The Cancer Genome Atlas, 64 patients) and the independent test set (institution 2, 57 patients). Preoperative MRIs were analyzed using the Visually AcceSAble Rembrandt Images and radiomics. The molecular glioblastoma status was determined on the basis of the presence of EGFR amplification and TERT promoter mutation. Molecular glioblastoma was present in 73.4% and 56.1% in the training and test sets, respectively. Models using clinical, Visually AcceSAble Rembrandt Images, and radiomic features were built to predict the molecular glioblastoma status in the training set; then they were validated in the test set. RESULTS In the test set, a model using both Visually AcceSAble Rembrandt Images and radiomic features showed superior predictive performance (area under the curve = 0.854) than that with only clinical features or Visually AcceSAble Rembrandt Images (areas under the curve = 0.514 and 0.648, respectively; P < . 001, both). When both Visually AcceSAble Rembrandt Images and radiomics were added to clinical features, the predictive performance significantly increased (areas under the curve = 0.514 versus 0.863, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS MR imaging features integrated with machine learning classifiers may predict a subset of IDH wild-type lower-grade gliomas that carry molecular features of glioblastoma.

AtMPK6-induced phosphorylation of AtERF72 enhances its DNA binding activity and interaction with TGA4/OBF4 in Arabidopsis. PLANT BIOLOGY (STUTTGART, GERMANY) 2021; 23:11-20. Abstract
The ethylene-responsive element binding factor (ERF) family is a large family of transcription factors involved in plant development and environmental stress responses. We previously reported the identification of 29 putative substrates of Mitogen-activated Protein Kinase3 (AtMPK3), AtMPK4 and AtMPK6, based on a solid-phase phosphorylation screening using a lambda phage expression library in Arabidopsis thaliana. In this study, a putative MPK substrate, AtERF72 (At3g16770), was strongly phosphorylated by AtMPK6 on the serine residue at position 151 (Ser151). AtERF72 binds to the GCC box (AGCCGCC) in the promoters of several pathogenesis-related (PR) genes and activates their transcription. We also show that the DNA-binding activity of AtERF72 is enhanced upon phosphorylation by AtMPK6 in vitro. In addition, transient co-expression experiments in Arabidopsis protoplasts revealed that effector constructs expressing a mutant variant of AtERF72, AtERF72S151D (carrying a Ser to aspartic acid [Asp] substitution at amino acid position 151) showed higher expression of the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene driven by the GCC box element than effector constructs expressing the wild-type AtERF72. Furthermore, yeast two-hybrid assays revealed that the interaction between AtERF72S151D and TGA4/OBF4 was stronger than that between wild-type AtERF72 and TGA4/OBF4. Since AtERF72S151D is equivalent to AtERF72 phosphorylated by AtMPK6 at Ser151, these results suggest that the phosphorylation of AtERF72 by AtMPK6 triggers an event of transcriptional regulation from defence signalling in Arabidopsis.
