Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES Variation in tissue damage after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) can cause uncertainty in stroke-related studies, which can be reduced if the damage can be predicted early after ischemia by measuring the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). We investigated whether ADC measurement in the acute phase can predict permanent cerebral I/R injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS The middle cerebral artery occlusion model was established using the intraluminal suture method to induce 60 minutes of ischemia followed by reperfusion in rats. T2-weighted images and diffusion-weighted images were obtained at 30 minutes and 24 hours after ischemia. Neuronal cell survival was assessed by neuronal nuclei (NeuN) immunofluorescence staining. The correlation between relative ADC (rADC) values at 30 minutes and I/R injury at 24 hours after ischemia was analyzed. Magnetic resonance imaging results were confirmed by histologic analysis. RESULTS The correlation between rADC values at 30 minutes and 24 hours was strong in the ischemic core and peri-infarct region but moderate in the anterior choroidal and hypothalamic region. Histologic analysis revealed that the correlation between rADC values at 30 minutes and the number of NeuN-positive cells at 24 hours was strong in the ischemic core and peri-infarct region but moderate in the anterior choroidal and hypothalamic region. Furthermore, there was a strong positive correlation between the sum of rADC values of three regions at 30 minutes and the infarct volume at 24 hours. CONCLUSION ADC measurement in the acute phase can predict permanent cerebral I/R injury and provide important information for the evaluation of ischemic stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate diagnosis of tumefactive demyelinating lesions is clinically important to avoid unnecessary invasive biopsy or inappropriate treatment. PURPOSE We aimed to evaluate conventional and advanced MR imaging findings of tumefactive demyelinating lesions and determine the diagnostic performance of MR imaging for differentiating tumefactive demyelinating lesions from primary brain tumor. DATA SOURCES A systematic search of Ovid MEDLINE and EMBASE up to December 6, 2017, was conducted. STUDY SELECTION Original articles describing MR imaging findings in patients with tumefactive demyelinating lesions were selected. DATA ANALYSIS The pooled incidences of conventional MR imaging findings of tumefactive demyelinating lesions were obtained with the DerSimonian and Liard random-effects model. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of MR imaging for differentiating tumefactive demyelinating lesions from primary brain tumor were obtained using the bivariate random-effects model. DATA SYNTHESIS Nineteen eligible studies with 476 patients with tumefactive demyelinating lesions were included. The pooled incidence of open ring or incomplete rim enhancement was 35% (95% CI, 24%-47%), which was significantly higher than the incidence of closed ring or complete rim enhancement (18% [95% CI, 11%-29%]; P = .0281). The pooled incidences of T2 hypointense rim, absent or mild mass effect, and absent or mild perilesional edema were 48%, 67%, and 57%, respectively. On advanced MR imaging, tumefactive demyelinating lesions showed a high apparent diffusion coefficient, peripheral restricted diffusion, and low cerebral blood volume. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of MR imaging for differentiating tumefactive demyelinating lesions from primary brain tumor were 89% (95% CI, 82%-93%) and 94% (95% CI, 89%-97%), respectively. LIMITATIONS Seventeen of 19 studies were retrospective studies. CONCLUSIONS Conventional MR imaging findings may help differentiate tumefactive demyelinating lesions from primary brain tumor, though further study is needed to determine the added value of advanced MR imaging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND O6-methylguanine methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status has been reported as a prognostic biomarker in clinical trials. PURPOSE Our aim was to systematically evaluate imaging features of MGMT promoter methylated glioblastoma and to determine the diagnostic performance of MR imaging for prediction of MGMT promoter methylation in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. DATA SOURCES A computerized search of Ovid MEDLINE and EMBASE up to February 27, 2018, was conducted. STUDY SELECTION We selected studies evaluating imaging features of MGMT promoter methylated glioblastoma and the diagnostic performance of MR imaging for prediction of MGMT promoter methylation. DATA ANALYSIS Pooled estimates of sensitivity and specificity were calculated using a hierarchic logistic regression model. Meta-regression and sensitivity analysis were performed. DATA SYNTHESIS Twenty-two articles including 2199 patients were included. MGMT promoter methylated glioblastoma is likely to show less edema, high ADC, and low perfusion. Ten articles including 753 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The summary sensitivity was 79% (95% CI, 72%-85%), and the summary specificity was 78% (95% CI, 71%-84%). In the meta-regression, MGMT promoter methylation and mean age were associated with heterogeneity. Sensitivity analysis excluding 1 study resolved the heterogeneity. LIMITATIONS Included studies used a variety of different MR imaging techniques to predict MGMT promoter methylation. CONCLUSIONS MGMT promotor methylated glioblastoma is likely to show less aggressive imaging features than MGMT promotor unmethylated glioblastoma. Despite the variety of different MR imaging techniques used, MR imaging in patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma was shown to have the potential to predict MGMT promoter methylation noninvasively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate diagnosis of high-grade glioma and solitary brain metastasis is clinically important because it affects the patient's outcome and alters patient management. PURPOSE To evaluate the diagnostic performance of DWI and DTI for differentiating high-grade glioma from solitary brain metastasis. DATA SOURCES A literature search of Ovid MEDLINE and EMBASE was conducted up to November 10, 2017. STUDY SELECTION Studies evaluating the diagnostic performance of DWI and DTI for differentiating high-grade glioma from solitary brain metastasis were selected. DATA ANALYSIS Summary sensitivity and specificity were established by hierarchic logistic regression modeling. Multiple subgroup analyses were also performed. DATA SYNTHESIS Fourteen studies with 1143 patients were included. The individual sensitivities and specificities of the 14 included studies showed a wide variation, ranging from 46.2% to 96.0% for sensitivity and 40.0% to 100.0% for specificity. The pooled sensitivity of both DWI and DTI was 79.8% (95% CI, 70.9%-86.4%), and the pooled specificity was 80.9% (95% CI, 75.1%-85.5%). The area under the hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.87 (95% CI, 0.84-0.89). The multiple subgroup analyses also demonstrated similar diagnostic performances (sensitivities of 76.8%-84.7% and specificities of 79.7%-84.0%). There was some level of heterogeneity across the included studies (I2 = 36%); however, it did not reach a level of concern. LIMITATIONS The included studies used various DWI and DTI parameters. CONCLUSIONS DWI and DTI demonstrated a moderate diagnostic performance for differentiation of high-grade glioma from solitary brain metastasis.

Abstract
Emerging evidence has suggested that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) may alleviate the cellular damage associated with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. In this study, we assessed using 1H-magnetic resonance imaging/magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRI/MRS) and histologic analysis whether H2S administration prior to reperfusion has neuroprotective effects. We also evaluated for differences in the effects of H2S treatment at 2 time points. 1H-MRI/MRS data were obtained at baseline, and at 3, 9, and 24 h after ischemia from 4 groups: sham, control (I/R injury), sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS)-30 and NaHS-1 (NaHS delivery at 30 and 1 min before reperfusion, respectively). The total infarct volume and the midline shift at 24 h post-ischemia were lowest in the NaHS-1, followed by the NaHS-30 and control groups. Peri-infarct volume was significantly lower in the NaHS-1 compared to NaHS-30 and control animals. The relative apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in the peri-infarct region showed that the NaHS-1 group had significantly lower values compared to the NaHS-30 and control animals and that NaHS-1 rats showed significantly higher relative T2 values in the peri-infarct region compared to the controls. The relative ADC value, relative T2 value, levels of N-acetyl-L-aspartate (NAA), and the NAA, glutamate, and taurine combination score (NGT) in the ischemic core region at 24 h post-ischemia did not differ significantly between the 2 NaHS groups and the control except that the NAA and NGT values were higher in the peri-infarct region of the NaHS-1 animals at 9 h post-ischemia. In the ischemic core and peri-infarct regions, the apoptosis rate was lowest in the NaHS-1 group, followed by the NaHS-30 and control groups. Our results suggest that H2S treatment has neuroprotective effects on the peri-infarct region during the evolution of I/R injury. Furthermore, our findings indicate that the administration of H2S immediately prior to reperfusion produces the highest neuroprotective effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE High-resolution MR imaging has recently been introduced as a promising diagnostic modality in intracranial artery disease. Our aim was to compare high-resolution MR imaging with digital subtraction angiography for the characterization and diagnosis of various intracranial artery diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-seven patients who had undergone both high-resolution MR imaging and DSA for intracranial artery disease were enrolled in our study (August 2011 to April 2014). The time interval between the high-resolution MR imaging and DSA was within 1 month. The degree of stenosis and the minimal luminal diameter were independently measured by 2 observers in both DSA and high-resolution MR imaging, and the results were compared. Two observers independently diagnosed intracranial artery diseases on DSA and high-resolution MR imaging. The time interval between the diagnoses on DSA and high-resolution MR imaging was 2 weeks. Interobserver diagnostic agreement for each technique and intermodality diagnostic agreement for each observer were acquired. RESULTS High-resolution MR imaging showed moderate-to-excellent agreement (interclass correlation coefficient = 0.892-0.949; κ = 0.548-0.614) and significant correlations (R = 0.766-892) with DSA on the degree of stenosis and minimal luminal diameter. The interobserver diagnostic agreement was good for DSA (κ = 0.643) and excellent for high-resolution MR imaging (κ = 0.818). The intermodality diagnostic agreement was good (κ = 0.704) for observer 1 and moderate (κ = 0.579) for observer 2, respectively. CONCLUSIONS High-resolution MR imaging may be an imaging method comparable with DSA for the characterization and diagnosis of various intracranial artery diseases.

Abstract
Liquid phase plasma (LPP) method was applied, for the first time, to the impregnation of iron oxide nanoparticles onto graphene sheet. Iron oxide nanoparticles with the size of 50 nm were precipitated with uniform dispersion on the surface of graphene sheet. The amount of iron oxide nanoparticles precipitated on graphene sheets increased with increasing LPP process times. The XPS, Raman and EDX analyses showed that the iron oxide/graphene composites synthesized by the LPP process.

Abstract
Silver and silver oxide nanoparticles were impregnated on the surface of powdered activated carbon (PAC) using a single-step liquid phase plasma (LPP) method. Spherical silver and silver oxide nanoparticles of 20 to 100 nm size were dipersed evenly on the surface of PAC. The impregnated PAC exhibited a higher activity for the decomposition of bromate than bare PAC. The XPS, Raman and EDX analyses showed that the Ag/PAC composites synthesized by the LPP process.

Abstract
Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strain NDRL0901 was developed as a live vaccine candidate for control of Newcastle disease. NDV isolate KR/duck/13/07 (DK1307) of duck origin was used as the selected vaccine strain. DK1307 was passaged 6 times in chickens. Then a single clone from the chicken-adapted virus (DK1307C) was finally selected, and the vaccine strain was named NDRL0901. DK1307C and the clone NDRL0901 viruses showed enhanced immunogenicity compared to the DK1307 virus. Principal component analysis based on fusion and hemagglutinin-neuraminidase genes revealed the codon usage pattern in the dataset is distinct separating duck viral sequences and avian sequences, and passage of the duck origin virus into the chicken host causes deviation in the codon usage pattern. The NDRL0901 virus was avirulent and did not acquire viral virulence even after 7 back passages in chickens. When day-old chicks were vaccinated with the NDRL0901 virus via spray, eye drops, and drinking water, the vaccinated birds showed no clinical signs and had significant protection efficacy (>80%) against very virulent NDV (Kr005 strain) infection regardless of the administration route employed. The results indicate that the NDRL0901 strain is safe in chickens and can offer protective immunity.

Abstract
The study was conducted to investigate the effects of water potential on bioavailability of the nano-unit 14C-cafenstrole, 14C-pretilachlor, 14C-benfuresate, 14C-simetryn and 14C-oxyfluorfen applied with or without dimepiperate or daimuron under various water potential conditions. The highest bioavailable concentration in soil solution (BCSS) was found at 60% soil moisture, while the lowest occurred at 50% soil moisture for soil-applied alone or in combination. All water potential conditions differed significantly from each other with variations in total bioavailable amount in soil solution (TBSS) when either dimepiperate or daimuron were added to the soil, and changes were directly proportional to variations in water potential. Across all treatments, TBSS at 80% soil moisture was three to four times greater than that at 50% soil moisture when applied alone or in combination with dimepiperate or daimuron. Cafenstrole and simetryn had distribution coefficient (Kd) values <64 ml g-1 and a TBSS ranging from 10 to 44 ng g-1 soil, regardless of water potential conditions applied alone or in combination. Pretilachlor and benfuresate had Kd values <15 ml g-1 and a TBSS range of 38 to 255 ng g-1 soil when applied with or without dimepiperate or daimuron.

Abstract
Electronic noses (e-noses) have been used for environmental monitoring, standardization of medicinal flavourings, food safety tests and diagnosis of infectious diseases based on the statistical analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is officially diagnosed using the intradermal skin test (IST), which is time-consuming and labour-intensive. Therefore, a more convenient and rapid test with greater sensitivity would be advantageous as prescreening test. In this study, we used a metal oxide sensor (MOS) type e-nose to analyse VOCs in a bTB-infected (n = 11) and bTB-free (n = 10) sera, from cattle whose health status was confirmed using the IST, and pathological and bacteriological examinations. The differences in VOCs from bTB-infected and bTB-free sera detected by the e-nose were statistically analysed using principal components and discriminant factor analyses. bTB-infected and bTB-free sera could be discriminated by MOS type e-nose, and analysing time per sample was only 20 min. VOC analysis using a MOS e-nose was a rapid and automated prescreening method to diagnose bTB, and can be used to select bTB-suspect cattle for IST confirmation. Further studies are required to estimate test sensitivity and specificity. Significance and impact of the study: Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle is diagnosed using the intradermal skin test (IST); however, this method is very time-consuming and labour-intensive. We analysed volatile organic compounds that are obtained from serum using a metal oxide sensor type of electronic nose to discriminate between TB-infected and TB-free sera. This simple and automated technique will be useful to prescreen bTB-suspects and reduce the time and labour required to perform the IST.

Abstract
In this study, a double-tube centrifuge method was employed to determine the effects of soil moisture on the bioactivity of cafenstrole, pretilachlor, benfuresate, oxyfluorfen and simetryn. In general, the available herbicide concentration in soil solution (ACSS) showed little change as soil moisture increased for herbicides. The total available herbicide in soil solution (TASS) typically increased as soil moisture increased for all herbicides. The relationship between TASS and % growth rate based on dry weight showed strong linear relationships for both cafenstrole and pretilachlor, with r2 values of 0.95 and 0.84, respectively. Increasing TASS values were consistent with increasing herbicide water solubility, with the exception of the ionizable herbicide simetryn. Plant absorption and % growth rate exhibited a strong linear relationship with TASS. According to the results suggested that TASS was a better predictor of herbicidal bioactivity than ACSS for all herbicides under unsaturated soil moisture conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE ICA-ophthalmic artery aneurysms have unique configurations corresponding to relative risks of ophthalmologic morbidities. Presented herein are clinical and radiologic outcomes of coil embolization in ophthalmic artery aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS From January 2003 to September 2013, endovascular coiling was performed in 43 consecutive patients with ophthalmic artery aneurysms, each classified by the degree to which the ophthalmic artery was incorporated by the aneurysm and the contiguity between the ophthalmic artery entry and parent ICA. Clinical and radiologic outcomes of this approach were investigated, including the technical aspects of treatment and the efficacy of balloon test occlusion. RESULTS Among 14 patients (32.6%, all ophthalmic artery types) undergoing balloon test occlusion before endovascular coiling, patent collaterals between the external carotid artery and ophthalmic artery were demonstrated in 12 (85.7%) and complete compromise of the ophthalmic artery (without affecting vision) occurred in 4 patients during coiling. Steam-shaped S-configured (67.9%) or straight microcatheters (17.8%) facilitated aneurysm selection in most of the superiorly directed ophthalmic artery aneurysms (n = 28), and steam-shaped pigtail microcatheters (85.7%) were useful in medially directed aneurysms (n = 14). Balloon protection (n = 22) was generally used to facilitate coiling, or a stent (n = 9) was alternatively deployed. Satisfactory aneurysmal occlusion was achieved through coil embolization in 37 lesions (86.1%). During follow-up of 35 patients (mean interval, 12.9 ± 9.4 months), only 1 instance (2.9%) of major recanalization was observed. CONCLUSIONS If one tailors technical strategies, ophthalmic artery aneurysms are amenable to safe and effective endovascular coil embolization, which tends to be stable in follow-up. Balloon test occlusion may be helpful in devising treatment strategies to preserve vision when coiling ophthalmic artery aneurysms (especially those incorporating an ophthalmic artery origin) is done.

Abstract
PURPOSE Whether the posterior communicating artery (PcomA) can be safely compromised during endovascular treatment of a PcomA aneurysm is a matter of debate. Here we present clinical and radiologic outcomes, given this scenario. METHODS From data prospectively accrued between January 2004 and December 2012, records of 44 patients harboring 46 PcomA aneurysms were retrieved. All had suffered PcomA compromise in the course of endovascular coil embolization. Patients/aneurysms were stratified into those with complete (Group A) and incomplete (Group B) compromise depending on the degree of PcomA flow limitation documented by postembolization ipsilateral internal carotid artery angiography. Clinical and radiologic outcomes were accordingly assessed. RESULTS All affected vessels were hypoplastic PcomA variants (PcomA/P1 ratio, ≤ 1.0), with exception of a single dominant PcomA (PcomA/P1 ratio, 1.1). In Group A (23 patients, 23 aneurysms), no PcomA compromise-related infarction was evident, whereas in Group B (21 patients, 23 aneurysms), two ischemic events occurred. One patient suffered thalamic infarction, although patency of the PcomA was adequate in a follow-up angiogram, and another experienced a transient ischemic attack. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that obstructed flow in hypoplastic PcomA variants during coil embolization of PcomA aneurysms carries no major consequence. However, incomplete compromise of the PcomA may be a source of delayed thromboembolic infarction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The usefulness of pharmacokinetic parameters for glioma grading has been reported based on the perfusion data from parts of entire-tumor volumes. However, the perfusion values may not reflect the entire-tumor characteristics. Our aim was to investigate the feasibility of glioma grading by using histogram analyses of pharmacokinetic parameters including the volume transfer constant, extravascular extracellular space volume per unit volume of tissue, and blood plasma volume per unit volume of tissue from T1-weighted dynamic contrast-enhanced perfusion MR imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-eight patients (14 men, 14 women; mean age, 49.75 years; age range, 25-72 years) with histopathologically confirmed gliomas (World Health Organization grade II, n = 7; grade III, n = 8; grade IV, n = 13) were examined before surgery or biopsy with conventional MR imaging and T1-weighted dynamic contrast-enhanced perfusion MR imaging at 3T. Volume transfer constant, extravascular extracellular space volume per unit volume of tissue, and blood plasma volume per unit volume of tissue were calculated from the entire-tumor volume. Histogram analyses from these parameters were correlated with glioma grades. The parameters with the best percentile from cumulative histograms were identified by analysis of the area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic analysis and were compared by using multivariable stepwise logistic regression analysis for distinguishing high- from low-grade gliomas. RESULTS All parametric values increased with increasing glioma grade. There were significant differences among the 3 grades in all parameters (P < .01). For the differentiation of high- and low-grade gliomas, the highest area under the curve values were found at the 98th percentile of the volume transfer constant (area under the curve, 0.912; cutoff value, 0.277), the 90th percentile of extravascular extracellular space volume per unit volume of tissue (area under the curve, 0.939; cutoff value, 19.70), and the 84th percentile of blood plasma volume per unit volume of tissue (area under the curve, 0.769; cutoff value, 11.71). The 98th percentile volume transfer constant value was the only variable that could be used to independently differentiate high- and low-grade gliomas in multivariable stepwise logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS Histogram analysis of pharmacokinetic parameters from whole-tumor volume data can be a useful method for glioma grading. The 98th percentile value of the volume transfer constant was the most significant measure.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the antimicrobial resistance of various species of enterococci isolated from mastitic bovine milk samples. A total of 105 enterococci isolates were examined: Enterococcus faecalis (n = 47), Enterococcus faecium (n = 39), Enterococcus gallinarum (n = 6), Enterococcus avium (n = 6), Enterococcus hirae (n = 5) and Enterococcus durans (n = 2). All the isolates were susceptible to ampicillin, gentamicin and vancomycin, and only a single E. hirae isolate was resistant to ampicillin. In general, the most frequently observed resistance among the enterococcal isolates was to tetracycline (69.5%), followed by penicillin (64.7%), erythromycin (57.1%) and cephalothin (44.7%). A similar antimicrobial resistance pattern was observed among individual species except E. durans, which exhibited only tetracycline resistance. Resistance observed among isolates of E. hirae and E. gallinarum was almost as high as E. faecium and E. faecalis. Of 105 isolates, only six (5.7%) strains of E. faecium were susceptible to all the antimicrobials tested and about 52% (55/105) showed resistance to more than three antimicrobials. The most common multiple resistance pattern was penicillin, tetracycline and erythromycin, which was observed in 32 of 105 (30.4%) isolates. This study demonstrates that enterococcal isolates belonging to minor species showed antimicrobial resistance rates as high as those of E. faecium and E. faecalis, and that monitoring of antimicrobial resistance should not be restricted only to those two major species.

Abstract
In this study, TiO(2) photo-catalyst balls produced by the chemical vapour deposition method were used for degradation of organic dyes in which simultaneous irradiation of microwave and UV was evaluated. An electrodeless UV lamp that emits UV upon the irradiation of microwave was developed to irradiate microwave and UV simultaneously. The degradation reaction rate was shown to be higher with higher microwave intensity, under stronger acidic or basic conditions, and with a larger amount of O(2) gas or H(2)O(2) addition. The effect of addition of H(2)O(2) was not significant when photo-catalysis was used without additional microwave irradiation or when microwave was irradiated without the use of photo-catalysts. When H(2)O(2) was added under simultaneous use of photo-catalysis and microwave irradiation, however, considerably higher degradation reaction rates were observed.

Abstract
In this study, zero-valent iron (ZVI) was produced using iron oxide that is a by-product of a pickling line at a steel works. The reaction activity of the produced ZVI was evaluated through a series of decomposition experiments of Orange II aqueous solution. The size of ZVI particles increased with reduction temperature due to coalescence. Correspondingly, the specific surface area of ZVI decreased with increasing reduction temperature. The decomposition efficiency of synthesized ZVI particles was higher at a lower pH. In particular, no significant decomposition reaction was observed at pH of 4 and higher. The rate of the ZVI-assisted decomposition of Orange II was increased by addition of H2O2 at pH of 3, whereas it was reduced by addition of H2O2 at a higher pH of 6. Nevertheless, simultaneous use of ZVI, UV and H2O2 led to a considerable increase in the decomposition rate even at a high pH condition (pH = 6).

Abstract
Fifty-four quinupristin/dalfopristin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (QDREF) isolated from chickens and pigs during 2002-2003 in Korea were screened by PCR for the presence of streptogramin resistance genes vatD, vatE, and vgbA, and macrolide resistance gene ermB. None of the QDREF isolates carried vgbA and vatD genes, while vatE and ermB were detected in 9.2% and 74% of the isolates, respectively. Twenty-six percent (14/54) of the QDREF isolates contained none of the resistance determinants tested. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns revealed high heterogeneity: 47 different patterns for 54 QDREF evaluated. Identical PFGE types were observed in two pairs of chicken isolates and a pair of pig isolates, respectively, but chicken isolates did not share PFGE pattern with pig isolates, suggesting clonal spread of QDREF strain between the same species of animals but not between different species of animals. This is the first report, to our knowledge, of vatE-positive E. faecium isolates and also the first evidence of clonal spread of QDREF strain between animals in Korea.

Abstract
A total of 196 day-old male broiler chicks were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 treatments in a study conducted to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of chito-oligosaccharide (COS) on growth, nutrient digestibility, and serum composition. The experimental diets consisted of an unsupplemented control diet based on corn, soybean meal, and fish meal or similar diets supplemented with either chlortetracycline, 50 mg/kg of COS, or 100 mg/kg of COS. Each treatment was fed to 7 replicate pens of birds, with 7 birds per pen. Broiler performance, nutrient digestibility, cecal microbial concentrations, and serum indices were measured at the end of the starter (d 21) and grower phases (d 42). During the starter period and overall, broilers fed 50 or 100 mg/kg of COS had better (P<0.05) average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and feed conversion than the control birds. The performance of birds fed chlortetracycline was generally intermediate between that of the control and the 2 COS treatments. Compared with the birds in the control or chlortetracycline treatments, the birds receiving 100 mg/kg of COS had better nutrient digestibility of DM, energy, calcium, and phosphorus; higher (P<0.05) concentrations of cecal Lactobacillus; and lower (P<0.05) serum triglyceride and total cholesterol during the starter phase. During the grower phase, the birds fed 100 mg/kg of COS had higher (P<0.05) calcium digestibility and CP retention than those fed the chlortetracycline treatment, and lower concentrations of cecal Escherichia coli than birds in the control treatment. The serum growth hormone level in birds fed 50 mg/kg of COS was higher (P<0.05) than in the other treatments. The birds fed 100 mg/kg of COS had lower (P<0.05) serum triglyceride, higher (P<0.05) serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and higher serum total protein content than birds in the other treatments. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with COS appeared to improve the average daily gain of broilers by increasing the average daily feed intake and nutrient digestibility and modulating the concentrations of cecal microbial flora. Additionally, COS increased serum protein and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and decreased serum triglyceride.

Abstract
To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from imported or domestic meats, L. monocytogenes was isolated and identified through biochemical and serological tests, and epidemiological analysis of the isolates was carried out through the random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. Fifty-four isolates were identified as L. monocytogenes through biochemical tests, of which 36 (67%) were confirmed as serotype 1, and 18 (33%) were serotype 4, through the microagglutination test. In the molecular epidemiological analysis using RAPD method, the isolates could be classified into 10, 6 and 6 types using three random primers, PB1, PB4, and HLWL74, respectively. Forty composite profiles were identified by a combination of the three primers. RAPD analysis demonstrated the relationships between the isolates from beef from Korea and the USA, pork from Korea and Denmark. These results suggested that RAPD could be a useful typing tool for the epidemiological study of L. monocytogenes and other bacteria.

Abstract
Fabry disease is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme alpha-galactosidase A (alpha-gal A). This enzyme deficiency leads to impaired catabolism of alpha-galactosyl-terminal lipids such as globotriaosylceramide (Gb3). Patients develop painful neuropathy and vascular occlusions that progressively lead to cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and renal dysfunction and early death. Although enzyme replacement therapy and bone marrow transplantation have shown promise in the murine analog of Fabry disease, gene therapy holds a strong potential for treating this disease in humans. Delivery of the normal alpha-gal A gene (cDNA) into a depot organ such as liver may be sufficient to elicit corrective circulating levels of the deficient enzyme. To investigate this possibility, a recombinant adeno-associated viral vector encoding human alpha-gal A (rAAV-AGA) was constructed and injected into the hepatic portal vein of Fabry mice. Two weeks postinjection, alpha-gal A activity in the livers of rAAV-AGA-injected Fabry mice was 20-35% of that of the normal mice. The transduced animals continued to show higher alpha-gal A levels in liver and other tissues compared with the untouched Fabry controls as long as 6 months after treatment. In parallel to the elevated enzyme levels, we see significant reductions in Gb3 levels to near normal at 2 and 5 weeks posttreatment. The lower Gb3 levels continued in liver, spleen, and heart, up to 25 weeks with no significant immune response to the virus or alpha-gal A. Also, no signs of liver toxicity occurred after the rAAV-AGA administration. These findings suggest that an AAV-mediated gene transfer may be useful for the treatment of Fabry disease and possibly other metabolic disorders.

Abstract
A process of making a new type of silicon depth-probe microelectrode array is described using a combination of plasma and wet etch. The plasma etch, which is done using a low temperature oxide (LTO) mask, enables probe thickness to be controlled over a range from 5 to 90 mu. Bending tests show that the probe's mechanical strength depends largely on shank thickness. More force can be applied to thicker shanks while thinner shanks are more flexible. One can then choose a thickness and corresponding mechanical strength using the process developed. The entire probe shaping process is performed only at low temperature, and thus is consistent with the standard CMOS fabrication. Using the probe in recording from rat's somatosensory cortex, we obtained four channel simultaneous recordings which showed clear independence among channels with a signal-to-noise ratio performance comparable with that obtained using other devices.

Abstract
A cytogenetic study was performed on 4,117 Korean patients referred for suspected chromosomal abnormalities. Chromosome aberrations were identified in 17.5% of the referred cases. The most common autosomal abnormality was Down syndrome and Turner syndrome in abnormalities of sex chromosome. The proportions of different karyotypes in Down syndrome (trisomy 21 92.5%, translocation 5.1%, mosaic 2.4%) were similar to those reported in other countries. However, it was different in Turner syndrome (45, X 28.1%, mosaic 50.8%, 46, X, del (Xq) 4.4%, 46, X, i (Xq) 16.7%), in which proportions of mosaics and isochromosome, 46, X, i(Xq), were higher than those reported in other countries. In structural chromosome aberrations of autosome, translocation was the most common (43.6%), and duplication (21.3%), deletion (14.4%), marker chromosome (7.9%) and ring chromosome (4.0%) followed in order of frequency. Rates of several normal variant karyotypes were also described. Inversion of chromosome 9 was observed in 1.7% of total referred cases.

Abstract
We report a technique for retrieval of a dislodged coronary stent using a stiff angioplasty wire positioned beside the initial stent guidewire. This two-wire technique provides a better platform to move and position the snare device without moving the dislodged stent and thus lessens the risk of embolization. This prospective randomized study was done to assess the safety of 4-hr ambulation after diagnostic cardiac catheterization with 8 French sheaths and catheters. In this selected group of patients, we found that early ambulation could be done without an increase in access site complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to prospectively examine the risk of hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in a large, nationally representative sample of very old men and women. METHODS We utilized secondary analysis of the Longitudinal Study of Aging. Baseline (1984) in-person interview data were linked to Medicare hospitalization records for 1984-1991. Subjects were 6,071 noninstitutionalized adults 70 years old or older at baseline. Hospitalization for AMI was defined as having primary discharge diagnoses containing ICD9-CM 410 codes. Multivariable proportional hazards regression was used to evaluate the epidemiologic risks for all persons, and separately for women, men, self-respondents, those with no previous AMIs, and those with no history of coronary heart disease. RESULTS Of the sample, 357 persons (5.9%; 172 women and 185 men) had at least one primary discharge diagnosis of AMI. Significant (p<.05) risk factors for being hospitalized with an AMI (adjusted hazards ratios in parentheses) from the pooled analysis were male gender (1.86), having no more than a grade school education (1.35), atherosclerosis (1.43), hypertension (1.29), coronary heart disease (1.63), angina (1.60), previous AMI (1.52), diabetes (1.89), and four or more lower body limitations (1.43). The gender-specific analyses, however, revealed that hypertension, angina, diabetes, and lower body limitations were risk factors only for women, and that having no more than a grade school education was a risk factor only for men. CONCLUSION Men, especially those with low education, women with diabetes, angina, hypertension, or lower body limitations, and either men or women with previous AMIs, coronary heart disease, or atherosclerosis have elevated risks for AMI resulting in hospitalization, and they should be considered for evaluation and monitoring. Current protocols for therapeutic management should be adopted, and compliance should be encouraged.

Abstract
A nationwide investigation of congenital malformations and genetic diseases in Korea was conducted by analyzing Medical Insurance data for infants aged under 1 year. Medical Insurance data were obtained for 1993 and 1994 and the ICD-9 (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision) code was used to classify the diseases. The coverage rate of medical insurance was approximately 95% of the total population. Anomalies of the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal systems, in descending order of frequency, were more frequent than anomalies in other systems. The average prevalence of cardiovascular anomalies for 1993 and 1994 was 15 per 1000 infants, and ventricular septal defect, with an average prevalence of about 3.50 per 1000 for 1993 and 1994, was the most frequent cardiovascular anomaly in infants. Polydactyly was the most frequent musculoskeletal anomaly, with an average prevalence, for 1993 and 1994, of about 1.20 per 1000 infants. Anencephaly had the highest frequency of nervous system anomalies. Congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis was the most common of the gastrointestinal anomalies. The prevalence of the congenital malformations and genetic diseases examined was similar to that reported in other countries. Total medical expenses for the care of patients with each disease entity were also estimated. The highest medical expenses were incurred for ventricular septal defect, congenital coagulation factor VIII disorders, atrial septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot, and spinal anomalies, in descending order of magnitude. This investigation could be helpful in planning social welfare systems, as well as for elucidating the current status of congenital malformations and genetic diseases in Korea, and in other Asian countries.

Abstract
Bacterial contamination of in vitro vs in vivo produced embryos presents a particular danger because of the alteration of the zona pellucida and the use of various biological products during culture. Our objective was to investigate the effects of semen contaminated with bacteria on IVF of bovine oocytes and to determine if removal of cumulus cells by vortexing as opposed to pipetting would reduce contamination and improve subsequent embryonic development. Semen from 5 bulls of the Native Korean breed (Bulls A, B, C, D, E) was used for IVF of matured oocytes. Preliminary studies had shown that the semen from Bulls A, B, D and E but not Bull C was contaminated with various species of common bacteria. After IVF, the cumulus cells surrounding the oocytes were removed either by pipetting or vortexing. Viability and cleavage rates of the resulting zygotes was assessed after 44 h in culture. When cumulus cells were removed by pipetting, only zygotes derived from oocytes that were fertilized with uncontaminated semen from Bull C developed to morula and blastocyst stages; zygotes derived from oocytes that were fertilized with contaminated semen from Bulls A, B, D and E started to degenerate, and the culture media became noticeably turbid. When cumulus cells were removed by vortexing, zygotes derived from oocytes fertilized with either contaminated or uncontaminated semen showed good rates of development (16 to 32%) to morula or blastocyst stages. From these results it can be concluded that the bacteria introduced with the semen contaminated the in vitro system and severely reduced the viability of the embryos. In contrast, complete removal of the cumulus cells with vortexing, as opposed to pipetting, reduced the contamination of the culture medium, allowing embryonic development to take place.

Abstract
Activity-dependent changes of conduction velocity (CV) and conduction block in single A(delta) fibers of primary afferent neurons were characterized in a rat model of neuropathy (NP). Injured dorsal root (DR) fiber in NP rats exhibited profoundly greater decreases of CV following impulse activity than did DR fiber in normal rats. Activity-dependent conduction block was absent up to 100 Hz of activity rate in DR fiber of NP rats, but was present above 25 Hz in normal rats. Profiles of activity dependence in sciatic fibers were similar in both NP and normal rats. These results suggest that nerve injury may alter activity-dependent hypoexcitability of A(delta) DR fibers. Furthermore, this excitability change may be responsible for the elevated pain perception in neuropathy.

Abstract
The effects of topical application of interleukin-6 (IL-6) on the short and long latency evoked unit responses of the neurones in the primary somatosensory (SI) cortex were determined quantitatively in anaesthetized rats. IL-6 (0.01, 0.1, 1.0 units) significantly suppressed (-15.13 +/- 3.4%) short latency afferent sensory responses, while it induced profound facilitation (+464.74 +/- 132.7%) of long latency responses in a dose-dependent manner. IL-6-induced afferent modulations fully recovered by 60 min after drug administration. In control experiments, saline solution containing 0.2% bovine serum albumin, used as a vehicle, did not affect afferent sensory transmission. Implications of these results are discussed with reference to the different somatosensory functions of short and long latency response components in the SI cortex.

Abstract
Activity-dependent changes of the conduction latency of single A beta fibers of primary afferent neurons were characterized in both neuropathic (L4 and L6 ligated) and normal rats. Activity-dependent increases in conduction latency of dorsal root fibers in neuropathic rats were significantly stronger than those in normal rats. Different profiles of activity dependence were also observed between injured and adjacent intact dorsal root fibers of neuropathic rats. However, activity-dependent latency changes in sciatic nerves distal to the dorsal root ganglion were not different between neuropathic and normal rats. These results suggest that partial nerve injury induces activity-dependent excitability changes in the dorsal root fibers of neuropathic rat and that these changes may be responsible for the altered sensory processing such as those seen in allodynia.

Abstract
Single unit responses of the primary somatosensory (SI) cortical neurons to the stimulation of the forepaw single digit were monitored in anesthetized rats before and after subcutaneous injection of lidocaine to an ipsilateral homologous receptive field (IHRF). Quantitative determination of the temporal changes of afferent sensory transmission was done by analyzing poststimulus time histograms of unit responses. Temporary deafferentation to the IHRF induced immediate, but reversible suppression of afferent sensory transmission in the SI cortex and this suppression lasts up to 35 min post-deafferentation period (during 10-15 min, -21.81 +/- 5.9%, P < 0.01). This result suggests that temporary absence of afferent inflow from the digit to the SI cortex may exert interhemispheric modulation of afferent sensory transmission in the opposite somatosensory cortex of anesthetized rats.

A bovine dopamine transporter (bDAT) cDNA was transfected into CV-1 cells, a cell line that lacks vesicular storage and release mechanisms. Using this cell line, the effects of neuroleptic drugs on DAT-mediated uptake and release of dopamine (DA) were examined. All of the neuroleptic drugs tested, inhibited DA uptakes in DAT expressing cells, and most of them were shown to promote spontaneous release of DA at the same time. These results imply that neuroleptic drugs would cause an overflow of DA in the synaptic cleft of extrapyramidal dopaminergic neurons, which could be one of the possible mechanisms of drug-induced tardive dyskinesia.

Abstract
A rapid and specific method for the detection of pathogenic Leptospira spp. in bovine semen using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is described. The primers used were derived from an EcoR1/BamH1 fragment that hybridized strongly to chromosomal DNA from the hardjobovis serovar. Three different extraction methods were evaluated in this study: phenol-chloroform extraction method, proteinase K (PK) in 1% SDS, followed by phenol-chloroform, and phenol-chloroform followed by 1% cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). A PCR product of approximately 500 base pairs (bp) in length was obtained when DNA from pure Leptospira culture was used as a template for PCR, regardless of the DNA extraction method used. The product was consistent with that predicted from the gene sequence. However, in semen seeded in vitro, as well as in semen from infected bulls, a PCR product was obtained only when the leptospiral DNA was extracted from the specimen using the CTAB method. In contrast, other methods used for DNA extraction did not generate suitable templates for the PCR procedure. This is the first PCR protocol developed to detect Leptospira in bovine semen. The PCR protocol provided a direct and unequivocal demonstration that Leptospira can be detected in semen of infected animals. The CTAB method was also used successfully in detecting Leptospira in the urine of infected animals. The PCR procedure was shown to be more sensitive than either the fluorescent antibody test (FAT) or culture for detecting the organism in urine.

Abstract
Intracavitary thrombus is noted in 11-44% of patients with idiopathic delayed cardiomyopathy, and the incidence of embolism is 11-20%. The incidence of intracavitary thrombus formation after acute anterior myocardial infarction is 21-41%. The risk of embolism in all patient with acute anterior myocardial infarction is 2-6%; protruding or mobile thrombi carry a risk of embolization. Systemic anticoagulation is justified in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (international normalized ratio 2.0-3.0).
