The Effect of Block Ratio and Structure on the Thermosensitivity of Double and Triple Betaine Block Copolymers. Molecules 2024; 29:390. Abstract
AB-type and BAB-type betaine block copolymers composed of a carboxybetaine methacrylate and a sulfobetaine methacrylate, PGLBT-b-PSPE and PSPE-b-PGLBT-b-PSPE, respectively, were synthesized by one-pot RAFT polymerization. By optimizing the concentration of the monomer, initiator, and chain transfer agent, block extension with precise ratio control was enabled and a full conversion (~99%) of betaine monomers was achieved at each step. Two sets (total degree of polymerization: ~300 and ~600) of diblock copolymers having four different PGLBT:PSPE ratios were prepared to compare the influence of block ratio and molecular weight on the temperature-responsive behavior in aqueous solution. A turbidimetry and dynamic light scattering study revealed a shift to higher temperatures of the cloud point and micelle formation by increasing the ratio of PSPE, which exhibit upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior. PSPE-dominant diblocks created spherical micelles stabilized by PGLBT motifs, and the transition behavior diminished by decreasing the PSPE ratio. No particular change was found in the diblocks that had an identical AB ratio. This trend reappeared in the other set whose entire molecular weight approximately doubled, and each transition point was not recognizably impacted by the total molecular weight. For triblocks, the PSPE double ends provided a higher probability of interchain attractions and resulted in a more turbid solution at higher temperatures, compared to the diblocks which had similar block ratios and molecular weights. The intermediates assumed as network-like soft aggregates eventually rearranged to monodisperse flowerlike micelles. It is expected that the method for obtaining well-defined betaine block copolymers, as well as the relationship of the block ratio and the chain conformation to the temperature-responsive behavior, will be helpful for designing betaine-based polymeric applications.

Abstract
A laboratory-synthesized triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide-b-acrylic acid-b-styrene) (PEG-PAA-PS) was used as a template to synthesize hollow BaCO3 nanoparticles (BC-NPs). The triblock copolymer was synthesized using reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization. The triblock copolymer has a molecular weight of 1.88 × 104 g/mol. Transmission electron microscopy measurements confirm the formation of spherical micelles with a PEG corona, PAA shell, and PS core in an aqueous solution. Furthermore, the dynamic light scattering experiment revealed the electrostatic interaction of Ba2+ ions with an anionic poly(acrylic acid) block of the micelles. The controlled precipitation of BaCO3 around spherical polymeric micelles followed by calcination allows for the synthesis of hollow BC-NPs with cavity diameters of 15 nm and a shell thickness of 5 nm. The encapsulation and release of methotrexate from hollow BC-NPs at pH 7.4 was studied. The cell viability experiments indicate the possibility of BC-NPs maintaining biocompatibility for a prolonged time.

Abstract
An amphiphilic diblock copolymer (PChM-PNIPAM), composed of poly(cholesteryl 6-methacryloyloxy hexanoate) (PChM) and poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) blocks, was prepared via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization. The PChM and PNIPAM blocks exhibited liquid crystalline behavior and a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), respectively. PChM-PNIPAM formed water-soluble polymer micelles in water below the LCST because of hydrophobic interactions of the PChM blocks. The PChM and PNIPAM blocks formed the core and hydrophilic shell of the micelles, respectively. With increasing temperature, the molecular motion of the pendant cholesteryl groups increased, and a liquid crystalline phase transition occurred from an amorphous state in the core. With further increases in temperature, the PNIPAM block in the shell exhibited the LCST and dehydrated. Hydrophobic interactions of the PNIPAM shells resulted in inter-micellar aggregation above the LCST.

Abstract
Poly(4-((3-methacrylamidopropyl)dimethylammonium)butane-1-sulfonate) (PSBP) was prepared via controlled radical polymerization. PSBP showed upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior in aqueous solutions, which could be controlled by adjusting the polymer and NaCl concentrations. Owing to its pendant sulfonate anions, PSBP exhibited a negative zeta potential of −7.99 mV and formed a water-soluble ion complex with the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) via attractive electrostatic interaction. A neutral PSBP/CTAB complex was formed under equimolar concentrations of the pendant sulfonate group in PSBP and the quaternary ammonium group in CTAB. Transmittance electron microscopic images revealed the spherical shape of the complex. The stoichiometrically neutral-charge PSBP/CTAB complex exhibited UCST behavior in aqueous solutions. Similar to PSBP, the phase transition temperature of the PSBP/CTAB complex could be tuned by modifying the polymer and NaCl concentrations. In 0.1 M aqueous solution, the PSBP/CTAB complex showed UCST behavior at a low complex concentration of 0.084 g/L, whereas PSBP did not exhibit UCST behavior at concentrations below 1.0 g/L. This observation suggests that the interaction between PSBP and CTAB in the complex was stronger than the interpolymer interaction of PSBP.

Abstract
A diblock copolymer (P(VBTAC/NaSS)17-b-PAPTAC50; P(VS)17A50) composed of amphoteric random copolymer, poly(vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride-co-sodium p-styrensunfonate) (P(VBTAC/NaSS); P(VS)) and cationic poly(3-(acrylamidopropyl) trimethylammonium chloride) (PAPTAC; A) block, and poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc49) were prepared via a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer radical polymerization. Scrips V, S, and A represent VBTAC, NaSS, and PAPTAC blocks, respectively. Water-soluble polyion complex (PIC) vesicles were formed by mixing P(VS)17A50 and PAAc49 in water under basic conditions through electrostatic interactions between the cationic PAPTAC block and PAAc49 with the deprotonated pendant carboxylate anions. The PIC vesicle collapsed under an acidic medium because the pendant carboxylate anions in PAAc49 were protonated to delete the anionic charges. The PIC vesicle comprises an ionic PAPTAC/PAAc membrane coated with amphoteric random copolymer P(VS)17 shells. The PIC vesicle showed upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior in aqueous solutions because of the P(VS)17 shells. The pH- and thermo-responsive behavior of the PIC vesicle were studied using 1H NMR, static and dynamic light scattering, and percent transmittance measurements. When the ratio of the oppositely charged polymers in PAPTAC/PAAc was equal, the size and light scattering intensity of the PIC vesicle reached maximum values. The hydrophilic guest molecules can be encapsulated into the PIC vesicle at the base medium and released under acidic conditions. It is expected that the PIC vesicles will be applied as a smart drug delivery system.

Abstract
The self-assembly of pH-responsive random and block copolymers composed of 2-(N,N-diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine was investigated in aqueous media. Their pH-responsive behaviors were investigated in aqueous media by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescence measurements using a pyrene hydrophobic fluorescence probe. In an acidic environment, these copolymers existed as single polymer chains that did not interact with each other. In contrast, upon increasing the pH of the solution above the critical value of ~8, separated micelles were formed in the mixture, which was indicated by bimodal distribution in DLS results with radius of 4.5 and 10.4 nm, corresponding to the random and block copolymer micelles, respectively. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer efficiencies were near to zero in the mixture of the donor labeled block and acceptor labeled random copolymers under both acidic and basic pH. These results demonstrated the coexistence of two distinct micelles.

Abstract
Amphoteric statistical equivalent copolymers (P(2VP/NaSS) n ) composed of 2-vinylpyridine (2VP) and anionic sodium p-styrenesulfonate (NaSS) were prepared via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization. The degrees of polymerization (n) were 19 and 95. The monomer reactivity ratio, time conversion profile, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance diffusion-ordered spectra suggested that the copolymerization of 2VP and NaSS provided statistical or near to random copolymers. P(2VP/NaSS) n exhibited an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in acidic aqueous solutions on the basis of the charge interactions between the protonated cationic 2VP and anionic NaSS units. With an increase in pH value, the interaction was weakened because of the deprotonation of the 2VP units, thus reducing the UCST. At high [NaCl], the electrostatic interactions among the polymers were weakened because of the screening effect, and again, the UCST was reduced. With an increase in polymer concentration, the intra- and interpolymer interactions increased because of some entanglement, and the UCST consequently increased. Electrostatic interactions among the polymer chains with high molecular weight occurred easier than those among the low-molecular-weight polymer chains, which increased the UCST. The UCST also increased when deuterium oxide was used instead of hydrogen oxide, which was due to the isotopic effect. Hence, the UCST of P(2VP/NaSS) n can be adjusted according to the desired application.

Abstract
Antifouling treatment is critical to certain biomedical devices for their functions and patients' life. Facial, versatile, and universal coating methods to conjugate antifouling materials on a wide variety of biomaterials are beneficial for the fabrication of low-fouling biomedical devices. We developed a simple one-step coating method for surface conjugation of zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine) via deposition of self-polymerized pyrogallol (PG). Poly(pyrogallol) could deposit copolymers of sulfobetaine methacrylate and aminoethyl methacrylate (pSBAE) on various biomaterials. pSBAE coatings inhibited as high as 99.8% of the adhesion of L929 cells and reduced protein adsorption significantly. The resistance against L929 cell adhesion was increased with increasing coating time and was positively correlated with the surface hydrophilicity and film thickness. Such a coating was robust to resist harsh sterilization conditions and stable for long-term storage in phosphate-buffered saline. We expect that the simple low-fouling pSBAE coating is applicable to the manufacture of medical devices.

Abstract
Natural or synthetic polycations are used as biocides or as drug/gene carriers. Understanding the interactions between these macromolecules and cell membranes at the molecular level is therefore of great importance for the design of effective polymer biocides or biocompatible polycation-based delivery systems. Until now, details of the processes at the interface between polycations and biological systems have not been fully recognized. In this study, we consider the effect of strong polycations with quaternary ammonium groups on the properties of anionic lipid membranes that we use as a model system for protein-free cell membranes. For this purpose, we employed experimental measurements and atomic-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. MD simulations reveal that the polycations are strongly hydrated in the aqueous phase and do not lose the water shell after adsorption at the bilayer surface. As a result of strong hydration, the polymer chains reside at the phospholipid headgroup and do not penetrate to the acyl chain region. The polycation adsorption involves the formation of anionic lipid-rich domains, and the density of anionic lipids in these domains depends on the length of the polycation chain. We observed the accumulation of anionic lipids only in the leaflet interacting with the polymer, which leads to the formation of compositionally asymmetric domains. Asymmetric adsorption of the polycation on only one leaflet of the anionic membrane strongly affects the membrane properties in the polycation-membrane contact areas: (i) anionic lipid accumulates in the region near the adsorbed polymer, (ii) acyl chain ordering and lipid packing are reduced, which results in a decrease in the thickness of the bilayer, and (iii) polycation-anionic membrane interactions are strongly influenced by the presence and concentration of salt. Our results provide an atomic-scale description of the interactions of polycations with anionic lipid bilayers and are fully supported by the experimental data. The outcomes are important for understanding the correlation of the structure of polycations with their activity on biomembranes.

Abstract
Biocompatible amphiphilic statistical copolymers P(MEA/MPCm) composed of 2-methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA) and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) were prepared with three different mol% of the hydrophilic unit MPC (m = 6, 12 and 46 mol%). The monomer reactivity ratios of MEA (rMEA) and MPC (rMPC) were 0.53 and 2.21, respectively. The rMEA × rMPC value of 1.17 demonstrated that statistical copolymerization was successful. P(MEA/MPC12) and P(MEA/MPC46) copolymers did not undergo aggregation in water, whereas the P(MEA/MPC6) copolymer formed micelles in water with a hydrodynamic radius (Rh) of 96.9 nm and a critical aggregation concentration, which was determined using pyrene fluorescence, at 0.0082 g/L. The restricted motion of the protons in the hydrophobic MEA units in the micelles' cores provided additional evidence of self-association in P(MEA/MPC6).

Abstract
High concentrations of γ-tocopherol (γTCP) tend to show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects. In this study, we prepared polymer micelles under acidic conditions with a controlled release of γTCP due to the decomposition of pendant acetal bonds. First, a precursor diblock copolymer composed of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and acrylic acid (AA) was prepared. This was followed by the synthesis of an amphiphilic diblock copolymer (PEG54-P(AA/VE6/γTCP29)140), incorporated into hydrophobic γTCP pendant groups attached to the main chain through an acetal bond. The prepared PEG54-P(AA/VE6/γTCP29)140 was further dispersed in water to form polymer micelles composed of hydrophobic cores that were generated from a hydrophobic block containing γTCPs and hydrophilic shells on the surface. Under acidic conditions, γTCP was then released from the core of the polymer micelles due to the decomposition of the pendant acetal bonds. In addition, polymer micelles swelled under acidic conditions due to hydration of the core.

Abstract
Since the early 20th century, the slightly disparate measurements of a surfactant's critical micelle concentration, via either surface tension or electrical conductivity, have been assumed one and the same. As a consequence, the possibility that micelles can adsorb at the air/water surface has been disregarded and has led to some abnormalities in the literature that remain as yet unresolved. In this paper, we closely examined the two critical concentrations for a double-chain cationic surfactant. We confirmed that the two concentrations represent two different physical phenomena. Furthermore, the results verified the existence of surface micelles, which are different from the bulk micelles. The formation of the surface micelles can be explained by the structural changes of the adsorption layer, which was also corroborated by molecular simulations. The findings open new challenges to examine the surface adsorption, which offers new insights into the molecular levels.

Effect of the Addition of a Cross-Linker and the Water pH on the Physical Properties of Films of pH-Responsive Polymer Particles at Air/Water Interfaces. ACS OMEGA 2017; 2:7837-7848. Abstract
We investigated how the stiffness and physical properties of films of pH-responsive polystyrene nanoparticles with poly(2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethylmethacrylate) hairs (PDMA-PS particles) at air/water interfaces could be varied by using the cross-linker of 1,2-bis-(2-iodoethoxy)ethane (BIEE) and by varying the water pH. The physical properties of the film were investigated by using a Langmuir trough, atomic force microscope, and monolayer particle interaction apparatus. Films without large (μm-sized) holes were prepared by reacting BIEE with the PDMA-PS particles in the ethanol spreading solution for times ≤6 h and then by spreading this solution on a pH 5.8 water surface. Longer reaction times or a pH 9.0 water surface gave films with large holes. The holes were the result of the presence of aggregates of various sizes, which could not efficiently pack in the film. The aggregates were formed by interparticle adhesions because of the BIEE presence and physical attractive forces. The pH 5.8 water gave less aggregation than the pH 9.0 water because of the stronger interparticle electrostatic repulsions that resulted from the higher particle charge in pH 5.8 water than pH 9.0 water. The holes in the films could be decreased by reacting BIEE with the PDMA-PS particles on the pH 5.8 or 9.0 water surface, while the film was compressed to give a close packing density. The stiffness of the film of PDMA-PS particles increased, when BIEE was reacted with the PDMA-PS particles in the spreading solution for 1 h and was then spread on a pH 5.8 water surface. The film stiffness, however, did not increase, when BIEE was reacted with PDMA-PS particles on the pH 5.8 or 9.0 water surface for 1 h. This stiffness difference was explained by the fact that the former method gave a thicker film than the latter method.

Abstract
We confirmed the influence of ZnO nanoparticle size and residual water on performance of all inorganic perovskite solar cells. By decreasing the size of the ZnO nanoparticles, the short-circuit current density (Jsc) and open circuit photovoltage (Voc) values are increased and the conversion efficiency is improved. Although the Voc value is not affected by the influence of residual water in the solution for preparing the ZnO layer, the Jsc value drops greatly. As a result, it was found that it is important to use the oxide nanoparticles with a small particle diameter and to reduce the water content in the oxide forming material in order to manufacture a highly efficient all inorganic perovskite solar cells.
