First Measurement of the |t| Dependence of Incoherent J/ψ Photonuclear Production

The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/ψ vector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam |t| variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity, |y|<0.8, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-x range (0.3-1.4)×10^{-3}. Cross sections are given in five |t| intervals in the range 0.04<|t|<1  GeV^{2} and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a |t| dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data.

Measurements of Groomed-Jet Substructure of Charm Jets Tagged by D^{0} Mesons in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

Understanding the role of parton mass and Casimir color factors in the quantum chromodynamics parton shower represents an important step in characterizing the emission properties of heavy quarks. Recent experimental advances in jet substructure techniques have provided the opportunity to isolate and characterize gluon emissions from heavy quarks. In this Letter, the first direct experimental constraint on the charm-quark splitting function is presented, obtained via the measurement of the groomed shared momentum fraction of the first splitting in charm jets, tagged by a reconstructed D^{0} meson. The measurement is made in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, in the low jet transverse-momentum interval of 15≤p_{T}^{jet ch}<30  GeV/c where the emission properties are sensitive to parton mass effects. In addition, the opening angle of the first perturbative emission of the charm quark, as well as the number of perturbative emissions it undergoes, is reported. Comparisons to measurements of an inclusive-jet sample show a steeper splitting function for charm quarks compared with gluons and light quarks. Charm quarks also undergo fewer perturbative emissions in the parton shower, with a reduced probability of large-angle emissions.

Syntactic complexity differentially affects auditory sentence comprehension performance for individuals with age-related hearing loss

Objectives

This study examined whether older adults with hearing loss (HL) experience greater difficulties in auditory sentence comprehension compared to those with typical-hearing (TH) when the linguistic burdens of syntactic complexity were systematically manipulated by varying either the sentence type (active vs. passive) or sentence length (3- vs. 4-phrases).

Methods

A total of 22 individuals with HL and 24 controls participated in the study, completing sentence comprehension test (SCT), standardized memory assessments, and pure-tone audiometry tests. Generalized linear mixed effects models were employed to compare the effects of sentence type and length on SCT accuracy, while Pearson correlation coefficients were conducted to explore the relationships between SCT accuracy and other factors. Additionally, stepwise regression analyses were employed to identify memory-related predictors of sentence comprehension ability.

Results

Older adults with HL exhibited poorer performance on passive sentences than on active sentences compared to controls, while the sentence length was controlled. Greater difficulties on passive sentences were linked to working memory capacity, emerging as the most significant predictor for the comprehension of passive sentences among participants with HL.

Conclusion

Our findings contribute to the understanding of the linguistic-cognitive deficits linked to age-related hearing loss by demonstrating its detrimental impact on the processing of passive sentences. Cognitively healthy adults with hearing difficulties may face challenges in comprehending syntactically more complex sentences that require higher computational demands, particularly in working memory allocation.

Measurement of the Lifetime and Λ Separation Energy of _{Λ}^{3}H

The most precise measurements to date of the _{Λ}^{3}H lifetime τ and Λ separation energy B_{Λ} are obtained using the data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The _{Λ}^{3}H is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel (_{Λ}^{3}H→^{3}He+π^{-} and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ=[253±11(stat)±6(syst)]  ps and B_{Λ}=[102±63(stat)±67(syst)]  keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the _{Λ}^{3}H structure is consistent with a weakly bound system.

First Measurement of Antideuteron Number Fluctuations at Energies Available at the Large Hadron Collider

The first measurement of event-by-event antideuteron number fluctuations in high energy heavy-ion collisions is presented. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity (|η|<0.8) as a function of collision centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV using the ALICE detector. A significant negative correlation between the produced antiprotons and antideuterons is observed in all collision centralities. The results are compared with a state-of-the-art coalescence calculation. While it describes the ratio of higher order cumulants of the antideuteron multiplicity distribution, it fails to describe quantitatively the magnitude of the correlation between antiproton and antideuteron production. On the other hand, thermal-statistical model calculations describe all the measured observables within uncertainties only for correlation volumes that are different with respect to those describing proton yields and a similar measurement of net-proton number fluctuations.

Enhanced Deuteron Coalescence Probability in Jets

The transverse-momentum (p_{T}) spectra and coalescence parameters B_{2} of (anti)deuterons are measured in p-p collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV for the first time in and out of jets. In this measurement, the direction of the leading particle with the highest p_{T} in the event (p_{T}^{lead}>5  GeV/c) is used as an approximation for the jet axis. The event is consequently divided into three azimuthal regions, and the jet signal is obtained as the difference between the toward region, that contains jet fragmentation products in addition to the underlying event (UE), and the transverse region, which is dominated by the UE. The coalescence parameter in the jet is found to be approximately a factor of 10 larger than that in the underlying event. This experimental observation is consistent with the coalescence picture and can be attributed to the smaller average phase-space distance between nucleons in the jet cone as compared with the underlying event. The results presented in this Letter are compared to predictions from a simple nucleon coalescence model, where the phase-space distributions of nucleons are generated using pythia8 with the Monash 2013 tuning, and to predictions from a deuteron production model based on ordinary nuclear reactions with parametrized energy-dependent cross sections tuned on data. The latter model is implemented in pythia8.3. Both models reproduce the observed large difference between in-jet and out-of-jet coalescence parameters, although the almost flat trend of the B_{2}^{Jet} is not reproduced by the models, which instead give a decreasing trend.

Hypertriton Production in p-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV

The study of nuclei and antinuclei production has proven to be a powerful tool to investigate the formation mechanism of loosely bound states in high-energy hadronic collisions. The first measurement of the production of _{Λ}^{3}H in p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV is presented in this Letter. Its production yield measured in the rapidity interval -1<y<0 for the 40% highest-multiplicity p-Pb collisions is dN/dy=[6.3±1.8(stat)±1.2(syst)]×10^{-7}. The measurement is compared with the expectations of statistical hadronization and coalescence models, which describe the nucleosynthesis in hadronic collisions. These two models predict very different yields of the hypertriton in charged particle multiplicity environments relevant to small collision systems such as p-Pb, and therefore the measurement of dN/dy is crucial to distinguish between them. The precision of this measurement leads to the exclusion with a significance larger than 6.9σ of some configurations of the statistical hadronization model, thus constraining the theory behind the production of loosely bound states at hadron colliders.

Polarization of Λ and Λ[over ¯] Hyperons along the Beam Direction in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s]_{NN}=5.02 TeV

The polarization of the Λ and Λ[over ¯] hyperons along the beam (z) direction, P_{z}, has been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main contribution to P_{z} comes from elliptic flow-induced vorticity and can be characterized by the second Fourier sine coefficient P_{z,s2}=⟨P_{z}sin(2φ-2Ψ_{2})⟩, where φ is the hyperon azimuthal emission angle and Ψ_{2} is the elliptic flow plane angle. We report the measurement of P_{z,s2} for different collision centralities and in the 30%-50% centrality interval as a function of the hyperon transverse momentum and rapidity. The P_{z,s2} is positive similarly as measured by the STAR Collaboration in Au-Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200  GeV, with somewhat smaller amplitude in the semicentral collisions. This is the first experimental evidence of a nonzero hyperon P_{z} in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The comparison of the measured P_{z,s2} with the hydrodynamic model calculations shows sensitivity to the competing contributions from thermal and the recently found shear-induced vorticity, as well as to whether the polarization is acquired at the quark-gluon plasma or the hadronic phase.

Measurement of the Groomed Jet Radius and Momentum Splitting Fraction in pp and Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV

This article presents groomed jet substructure measurements in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV with the ALICE detector. The soft drop grooming algorithm provides access to the hard parton splittings inside a jet by removing soft wide-angle radiation. We report the groomed jet momentum splitting fraction, z_{g}, and the (scaled) groomed jet radius, θ_{g}. Charged-particle jets are reconstructed at midrapidity using the anti-k_{T} algorithm with resolution parameters R=0.2 and R=0.4. In heavy-ion collisions, the large underlying event poses a challenge for the reconstruction of groomed jet observables, since fluctuations in the background can cause groomed parton splittings to be misidentified. By using strong grooming conditions to reduce this background, we report these observables fully corrected for detector effects and background fluctuations for the first time. A narrowing of the θ_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is seen, which provides direct evidence of the modification of the angular structure of jets in the quark-gluon plasma. No significant modification of the z_{g} distribution in Pb-Pb collisions compared to pp collisions is observed. These results are compared with a variety of theoretical models of jet quenching, and provide constraints on jet energy-loss mechanisms and coherence effects in the quark-gluon plasma.

Measurement of Prompt D^{0}, Λ_{c}^{+}, and Σ_{c}^{0,++}(2455) Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The p_{T}-differential production cross sections of prompt D^{0}, Λ_{c}^{+}, and Σ_{c}^{0,++}(2455) charmed hadrons are measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV. This is the first measurement of Σ_{c}^{0,++} production in hadronic collisions. Assuming the same production yield for the three Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} isospin states, the baryon-to-meson cross section ratios Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}/D^{0} and Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} are calculated in the transverse momentum (p_{T}) intervals 2<p_{T}<12 and 1<p_{T}<24  GeV/c. Values significantly larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions are observed, indicating for the first time that baryon enhancement in hadronic collisions also extends to the Σ_{c}. The feed-down contribution to Λ_{c}^{+} production from Σ_{c}^{0,+,++} is also reported and is found to be larger than in e^{+}e^{-} collisions. The data are compared with predictions from event generators and other phenomenological models, providing a sensitive test of the different charm-hadronization mechanisms implemented in the models.

Measurement of the Cross Sections of Ξ_{c}^{0} and Ξ_{c}^{+} Baryons and of the Branching-Fraction Ratio BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+}) in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV

The p_{T}-differential cross sections of prompt charm-strange baryons Ξ_{c}^{0} and Ξ_{c}^{+} were measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=13  TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The Ξ_{c}^{0} baryon was reconstructed via both the semileptonic decay (Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}) and the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}) channels. The Ξ_{c}^{+} baryon was reconstructed via the hadronic decay (Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+}) channel. The branching-fraction ratio BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}e^{+}ν_{e})/BR(Ξ_{c}^{0}→Ξ^{-}π^{+})=1.38±0.14(stat)±0.22(syst) was measured with a total uncertainty reduced by a factor of about 3 with respect to the current world average reported by the Particle Data Group. The transverse momentum (p_{T}) dependence of the Ξ_{c}^{0}- and Ξ_{c}^{+}-baryon production relative to the D^{0} meson and to the Σ_{c}^{0,+,++}- and Λ_{c}^{+}-baryon production are reported. The baryon-to-meson ratio increases toward low p_{T} up to a value of approximately 0.3. The measurements are compared with various models that take different hadronization mechanisms into consideration. The results provide stringent constraints to these theoretical calculations and additional evidence that different processes are involved in charm hadronization in electron-positron (e^{+}e^{-}) and hadronic collisions.

Λ_{c}^{+} Production and Baryon-to-Meson Ratios in pp and p-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV at the LHC

The prompt production of the charm baryon Λ_{c}^{+} and the Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} production ratios were measured at midrapidity with the ALICE detector in pp and p-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV. These new measurements show a clear decrease of the Λ_{c}^{+}/D^{0} ratio with increasing transverse momentum (p_{T}) in both collision systems in the range 2<p_{T}<12  GeV/c, exhibiting similarities with the light-flavor baryon-to-meson ratios p/π and Λ/K_{S}^{0}. At low p_{T}, predictions that include additional color-reconnection mechanisms beyond the leading-color approximation, assume the existence of additional higher-mass charm-baryon states, or include hadronization via coalescence can describe the data, while predictions driven by charm-quark fragmentation processes measured in e^{+}e^{-} and e^{-}p collisions significantly underestimate the data. The results presented in this Letter provide significant evidence that the established assumption of universality (colliding-system independence) of parton-to-hadron fragmentation is not sufficient to describe charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

Experimental Evidence for an Attractive p-ϕ Interaction

This Letter presents the first experimental evidence of the attractive strong interaction between a proton and a ϕ meson. The result is obtained from two-particle correlations of combined p-ϕ⊕ p[over ¯]-ϕ pairs measured in high-multiplicity pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The spin-averaged scattering length and effective range of the p-ϕ interaction are extracted from the fully corrected correlation function employing the Lednický-Lyuboshits approach. In particular, the imaginary part of the scattering length vanishes within uncertainties, indicating that inelastic processes do not play a prominent role for the p-ϕ interaction. These data demonstrate that the interaction is dominated by elastic p-ϕ scattering. Furthermore, an analysis employing phenomenological Gaussian- and Yukawa-type potentials is conducted. Under the assumption of the latter, the N-ϕ coupling constant is found to be g_{N-ϕ}=0.14±0.03(stat)±0.02(syst). This work provides valuable experimental input to accomplish a self-consistent description of the N-ϕ interaction, which is particularly relevant for the more fundamental studies on partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium.

Multiharmonic Correlations of Different Flow Amplitudes in Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV

The event-by-event correlations between three flow amplitudes are measured for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, using higher-order symmetric cumulants. We find that different three-harmonic correlations develop during the collective evolution of the medium when compared to correlations that exist in the initial state. These new results cannot be interpreted in terms of previous lower-order flow measurements since contributions from two-harmonic correlations are explicitly removed in the new observables. A comparison to Monte Carlo simulations provides new and independent constraints for the initial conditions and system properties of nuclear matter created in heavy-ion collisions.

Pilot Study of Upper-Extremity Work and Power in Chronic Cumulative Trauma Disorders

Research designed to increase our understanding of behavioral responses to chronic pain resulting from work-related cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) has been limited. This pilot study's main purpose was to examine the test-retest reliability of self-determined work and power during maximum and submaximum efforts in the performance of wrist flexion and extension movements of the CTD-affected extremity, using the LIDO WorkSET Simulator System. Data were collected from 22 subjects (11 men, 11 women) with chronic upper-extremity CTD, in two same-day sessions. Subjective reports of current pain in the CTD subjects were measured using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and a Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Upper-extremity work and power data were also collected on 12 healthy subjects as a control (6 men, 6 women). Pilot results included: acceptable test-retest reliability of the work and power measures in the CTD subjects; the CTD group demonstrated markedly lower (20% to 58%) maximum work, submaximum work, and maximum power values compared with the healthy group; gender variation was seen in the CTD and healthy groups with respect to work and power data, and women with CTD tended to report higher pain intensity than male cohorts. These results provide insight for future studies.

Speciation is not necessarily easier in species with sexually monomorphic mating signals

Should we have different expectations regarding the likelihood and pace of speciation by sexual selection when considering species with sexually monomorphic mating signals? Two conditions that can facilitate rapid species divergence are Felsenstein's one-allele mechanism and a genetic architecture that includes a genetic association between signal and preference loci. In sexually monomorphic species, the former can manifest in the form of mate choice based on phenotype matching. The latter can be promoted by selection acting upon genetic loci for divergent signals and preferences expressed simultaneously in each individual, rather than acting separately on signal loci in males and preference loci in females. Both sexes in the Chrysoperla carnea group of green lacewings (Insecta, Neuroptera, Chrysopidae) produce sexually monomorphic species-specific mating signals. We hybridized the two species C. agilis and C. carnea to test for evidence of these speciation-facilitating conditions. Hybrid signals were more complex than the parents and we observed a dominant influence of C. carnea. We found a dominant influence of C. agilis on preferences in the form of hybrid discrimination against C. carnea. Preferences in hybrids followed patterns predicting preference loci that determine mate choice rather than a one-allele mechanism. The genetic association between signal and preference we detected in the segregating hybrid crosses indicates that speciation in these species with sexually monomorphic mating signals can have occurred rapidly. However, we need additional evidence to determine whether such genetic associations form more readily in sexually monomorphic species compared to dimorphic species and consequently facilitate speciation.

A multiple-channel, multiple-assay platform for characterization of full-range shear stress effects on vascular endothelial cells

Vascular endothelial cells (VECs), which line blood vessels and are key to understanding pathologies and treatments of various diseases, experience highly variable wall shear stress (WSS) in vivo (1-60 dyn cm(-2)), imposing numerous effects on physiological and morphological functions. Previous flow-based systems for studying these effects have been limited in range, and comprehensive information on VEC functions at the full spectrum of WSS has not been available yet. To allow rapid characterization of WSS effects, we developed the first multiple channel microfluidic platform that enables a wide range (~15×) of homogeneous WSS conditions while simultaneously allowing trans-monolayer assays, such as permeability and trans-endothelial electrical resistance (TEER) assays, as well as cell morphometry and protein expression assays. Flow velocity/WSS distributions between channels were predicted with COMSOL simulations and verified by measurement using an integrated microflow sensor array. Biomechanical responses of the brain microvascular endothelial cell line bEnd.3 to the full natural spectrum of WSS were investigated with the platform. Under increasing WSS conditions ranging from 0 to 86 dyn cm(-2), (1) permeabilities of FITC-conjugated dextran and propidium iodide decreased, respectively, at rates of 4.06 × 10(-8) and 6.04 × 10(-8) cm s(-1) per dyn cm(-2); (2) TEER increased at a rate of 0.8 Ω cm(2) per dyn cm(-2); (3) increased alignment of cells along the flow direction under increasing WSS conditions; and finally (4) increased protein expression of both the tight junction component ZO-1 (~5×) and the efflux transporter P-gp (~6×) was observed at 86 dyn cm(-2) compared to static controls via western blot. We conclude that the presented microfluidic platform is a valid approach for comprehensively assaying cell responses to fluidic WSS.

Adjuvant capecitabine and oxaliplatin for gastric cancer: Results of the phase III CLASSIC trial

Background: Surgical resection is a recommended treatment for operable gastric cancer (GC) in general, despite high recurrence rates (40%–80%). Adjuvant chemotherapy aims to reduce recurrences; however, there is currently no universally accepted adjuvant regimen for GC. Methods: CLASSIC is a randomized, open-label, multicenter, international (South Korea, China, and Taiwan) study of XELOX (capecitabine 1000mg/m2 bid, d1–14, q3w and oxaliplatin 130mg/m2, d1, q3w x 8 cycles) vs observation, following D2 gastrectomy. Eligible patients were chemotherapy- and radiotherapy-naive, with stage II (T2N1, T1N2, T3N0), IIIa (T3N1, T2N2, T4N0), or IIIb (T3N2) GC resected within 6 weeks prior to randomization. The primary endpoint is 3-year disease-free survival (DFS). A sample size of 512 patients per arm was planned to observe the 385 DFS events required to provide 80% power at a 5% significance level for the hypothesized treatment effect (hazard ratio [HR] 0.75). The Independent Data Monitoring Committee recommended full evaluation and reporting of results following a positive pre-planned interim analysis at 266 events. Results: The XELOX and observation arms (ITT populations of 520 and 515 patients, respectively) were well balanced for baseline characteristics. The median duration of follow-up was 34.4 (16–51) months. XELOX-related grade 3/4 adverse events (AEs) occurred in 244/496 patients (49%) of the safety population. Neutropenia was the only AE observed in >10% of patients (21%, n=106/496). Serious XELOX-related grade 3/4 AEs occurred in 34/496 patients (7%). There were 62/496 (13%) and 80/476 (17%) deaths on study in the safety populations of XELOX and observation arms, respectively, mostly due to disease progression. Efficacy results in the ITT population are summarized below. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the superior efficacy of adjuvant XELOX vs observation alone following D2 gastrectomy. Although OS data are still immature, there is a trend towards superiority of XELOX. These data support the use of adjuvant XELOX for GC.

Clinical outcome of sequential chemotherapy in metastatic and/or recurrent gastric cancer

Background: Little is known about data on subsequent chemotherapy (CTx) following 1st-line CTx in stage IV gastric cancer. The purpose of this study was to analyze the natural history of stage IV gastric cancer with sequential CTx Methods: A total of 532 patients (pts) with unresectable gastric adenocarcinoma were studied. They were managed with a strategy of maximal administration of CTx only if pts’ general conditions were allowed. Response evaluation was performed by RECIST every 2 cycles. Response of unmeasurable lesions was dichotomized only into stable disease or progressive disease. Results: When pts were divided into CTx group (460 of 532, 87%) and best supportive care group (BSC; 72 of 532, 13%) resulting from poor performance/pt's refusal/comorbidity (31/23/18), the former had younger age (p = 0.046), better performance (p < 0.001), and less advanced metastatic sites (p = 0.001) than the latter. Median overall survivals from diagnosis of unresectable cancer were 12.0/13.3/2.5 months for overall/CTx/BSC, respectively. 87%/47%/23% of the whole pts received 1st/2nd/3rd-line CTx, respectively. Median number of regimens delivered was 2. Maximally 5th-line CTx was given to 15 pts (3%). Response and disease control rates were 21.7%/12.5%/11.8% and 79.4%/56.3%/49.4% for 1st/2nd/3rd lines, respectively. Median progression-free and overall survivals from CTx were 5.5/3.4/2.5 months and 12.1/7.9/5.5 months for 1st/2nd/3rd lines, respectively. The most common cause of discontinuation of CTx was disease progression (68%/74%/70%) followed by pt's refusal (22%/13%/12%) for 1st/2nd/3rd lines, respectively. Prognosticators were performance status, histology, metastatic site, and CTx before 1st or 2nd line. Conclusions: When pts with unresectable gastric cancer were managed with a strategy of maximal administration of CTx, a considerable number of pts could receive 2nd or 3rd line CTx, showing modest activity. Performance status and metastatic site were consistent prognosticators even if lines changed. Our data on the natural history of stage IV gastric cancer with sequential CTx may suggest that clinical trials can be performed in a 2nd or 3rd line setting as well.

Predictive factors associated with clinical outcome and safety in Korean patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with sunitinib

Background: Sunitinib has become a standard treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The research for identifying patients who are more likely to benefit from this agent is quite limited, especially in Asian patients. Methods: In total, 81 histologically proven metastatic RCC patients who were treated with sunitinib were reviewed between Jan 2006 and Dec 2008. Tumor response was evaluated according to the RECIST criteria, and safety was assessed by NCI-CTC (version 3.0). Primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) and secondary endpoints included overall survival (OS), overall response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), and toxicities. Clinical features associated with clinical outcome were identified by univariate analysis; then, a stepwise modeling approach based on Cox's proportional hazards regression was used to identify independent prognostic factors to these endpoints. Results: Median age was 58 years (range, 29 to 73), and 33 patients received sunitinib as first-line systemic treatment. Clear cell type was predominant (85%). Patient distribution was 12% for favorable, 78% for intermediate, and 10% for poor group according to the MSKCC risk group. With the median follow-up of 26 months, median PFS was 16 months (95% CI, 8 –24) and median OS was 24 months (95% CI, 18 –30). ORR was 30% (95% CI, 19–40%) and DCR was 80% (95% CI, 70–89%). The most common grade 3/4 adverse events of sunitinib was thrombocytopenia (32%). Other severe toxicity included neutropenia (21%), anemia (19%), leucopenia (14%), fatigue (10%), stomatitis (10%). In multivariate analysis, the previous exposure to immunotherapy was related to longer PFS (P<.012). Performance status (ECOG 0–1) and corrected Ca level (8.5∼10.5 mg/dl) were associated with favorable ORR (P=.038) and DCR (p=0.008), respectively. Predictive factors for grade 3/4 thrombocytopenia were corrected Ca level (P=.018), poor MSKCC risk group (P=.025), and low WBC count (<4500/ul, P=.041). Conclusions: Compared to western reports, our data demonstrated comparable clinical efficacy in Asian patients, but different safety profile, especially in hematologic toxicities. This approach provides a tailored approach to predictive factors for targeted agents.

Somatic Symptoms in a Community Sample of Ethiopian Immigrants in Toronto, Canada

Objective:

This study examines the occurrence and correlates of somatization in a sample of adult Ethiopian immigrants and refugees residing n Toronto, Canada.

Methods:

A random sample of 342 adult (≥ 18 years of age) Ethiopian immigrants and refugees in Toronto completed structured face-to-face interviews. The Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) Somatization Disorder Module was used to collect data on somatic symptoms. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was used to assess major depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

Results:

Nearly two-thirds of the study participants reported having had at least one somatic symptom, and 5% reported experiencing medically unexplained symptoms in the 12 months preceding the interview. Individuals with major depression had significantly increased number of somatic symptoms compared to those without major depressive disorder. In a multivariate linear regression analysis, controlling for major depressive disorder, a higher level of somatization was associated with older age, pre-migration trauma, and post-migration stressful life events, and limited English proficiency.

Conclusion:

The findings of the study suggest that somatic symptoms are prevalent among individuals in cross-cultural transition and symptom level was associated with pre-migration trauma, post-migration stressors and mental disorder, particularly depressive disorder. The data also indicate a need for primary care physicians to routinely screen immigrant minority clients who present with somatic complaints for common and treatable psychiatric conditions, such as depression. In minority immigrant communities, somatic symptoms may reflect psychiatric problems.

Gender and the smoking behaviour of Ethiopian immigrants in Toronto

The objective of this paper is to present descriptive data on gender and smoking among Ethiopian immigrants in Toronto, Canada. The study used a cross-sectional epidemiological survey design (N = 342). The main outcome measures identified subjects as current (regular or occasional) smokers, daily smokers and former smokers. Overall, 20.8% of the individuals in the sample were current smokers and 15.7% were daily smokers. Although smoking rates (current and daily) were significantly higher among males compared to females, nearly twice as many female as male daily smokers reported that they began smoking post-migration (60.0% vs. 30.2%). Furthermore, 80.0% of female compared to nearly 56% of male daily smokers reported that they were smoking more post-migration. A significantly higher proportion of males compared to females were former daily smokers (17.8% vs. 4.4%). These findings present a challenge for public health professionals in terms of preventing the adoption of smoking among Ethiopian females and facilitating smoking cessation among Ethiopian males. Correlates with current smoking suggested that smoking prevention and cessation programs in newcomer immigrant communities may benefit from incorporating social, economic and religious contexts of these newcomers' lives from a gender-specific perspective.

Leaching of Mn, Co, and Ni from manganese nodules using an anaerobic bioleaching method

An anaerobic bioleaching of a manganese nodule by anaerobic Mn-reducing bacteria was evaluated for the leaching of metals, Mn, Co, and Ni. Insoluble Mn4+ in the nodule could be reduced to soluble Mn2+ by dissimilatory Mn-reducing bacteria that use a carbon source and Mn4+ as an electron donor and acceptor, respectively. As a result of the Mn reduction, Co and Ni could be leached from the loosed Mn matrix. Leaching experiments were carried out to optimize various process parameters, such as inoculation, pH, temperature, mineral salts, and particle size of the nodule used. The leaching efficiencies of Mn, Co, and Ni increased from 18, 7, and 10% to 77, 70, and 75%, respectively by the inoculation of the Mn-reducing enrichment culture broth. Metals could be efficiently recovered from the nodule in the ranges of pH from 5.0 to 6.5 and temperature from 30 to 45 degrees C by anaerobic bioleaching. External addition of mineral salts was not necessary for Mn, Co, and Ni leaching from the nodule. The optimum ratio of nodule to glucose was 0.1 (w/w). To obtain a leaching efficiency above 70%, the particle size of the nodules must be less than 0.6 mm.
