[Kidney transplantation for end-stage renal disease after third allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia]

An 18-year-old man underwent allogenic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ALL). Ph+ALL relapsed 3 months after the first BMT, and the patient underwent a second BMT. However, Ph+ALL relapsed 4 months after the second BMT, and he received a haploidentical peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (haplo-PBSCT) from his father. Molecular complete remission was confirmed 29 days after haplo-PBSCT. However, the patient needed dialysis for end-stage renal disease due to thrombotic microangiopathy 3 years and 2 months after haplo-PBSCT. He received a kidney transplantation from his father 7 years and 10 months after haplo-PBSCT, and got off dialysis after the kidney transplantation. Immunosuppressive therapy with methylprednisolone, tacrolimus, and mycophenolate mofetil was started for kidney transplantation, but the dose of immunosuppressive agents was reduced successfully without rejection soon after kidney transplantation. The patient has maintained long-term remission since the haplo-PBSCT, and his kidney function was restored by the kidney transplantation from his father.

Pinning potential in highly performant CaKFe4As4 superconductor from DC magnetic relaxation and AC multi-frequency susceptibility studies

We have investigated the pinning potential of high-quality single crystals of superconducting material CaKFe4As4 having high critical current density and very high upper critical field using both magnetization relaxation measurements and frequency-dependent AC susceptibility. Preliminary studies of the superconducting transition and of the isothermal magnetization loops confirmed the high quality of the samples, while temperature dependence of the AC susceptibility in high magnetic fields show absolutely no dependence on the cooling conditions, hence, no magnetic history. From magnetization relaxation measurements were extracted the values of the normalized pinning potential U*, which reveals a clear crossover between elastic creep and plastic creep. The extremely high values of U*, up to 1200 K around the temperature of 20 K lead to a nearly zero value of the probability of thermally-activated flux jumps at temperatures of interest for high-field applications. The values of the creep exponents in the two creep regimes resulted from the analysis of the magnetization relaxation data are in complete agreement with theoretical models. Pinning potentials were also estimated, near the critical temperature, from AC susceptibility measurements, their values being close to those resulted (at the same temperature and DC field) from the magnetization relaxation data.

[Late-onset refractory autoimmune hemolytic anemia following autologous hematologic recovery after allo-HSCT in aplastic anemia-PNH syndrome]

A 31-year-old man underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for the treatment of transfusion-dependent aplastic anemia (AA) after conditioning with a regimen including fludarabine, cyclophosphamide, and antithymocyte globulin. The patient developed a late graft rejection on day 103 and showed autologous hematologic recovery not requiring transfusions on day 76. Peripheral blood leukocytes were of 100% recipient origin on day 103, and paroxysmal nocturnal hematuria (PNH)-type granulocytes were detected 5 months after BMT. The patient suddenly experienced hemolytic symptoms triggered by cold stimulation, and was diagnosed with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) 37 months after BMT. Although anemia was ameliorated by prednisolone (PSL), hemolytic attacks repeatedly occurred, which became refractory to corticosteroids. Moreover, the patient underwent a splenectomy for the steroid-resistant AIHA and achieved AIHA remission without the need for PSL at 53 months after BMT. The immune tolerance breakdown to erythrocyte antigens was thought to have occurred due to various factors including immune AA, medication, cold stimulation, and infection, leading to AIHA development in this case.

Hybridization of Bogoliubov Quasiparticles between Adjacent CuO_{2} Layers in the Triple-Layer Cuprate Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{10+δ} Studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

Hybridization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles (BQPs) between the CuO_{2} layers in the triple-layer cuprate high-temperature superconductor Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Cu_{2}Cu_{3}O_{10+δ} is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In the superconducting state, an anticrossing gap opens between the outer- and inner-BQP bands, which we attribute primarily to interlayer single-particle hopping with possible contributions from interlayer Cooper pairing. We find that the d-wave superconducting gap of both BQP bands smoothly develops with momentum without an abrupt jump in contrast to a previous ARPES study. Hybridization between the BQPs also gradually increases in going from the off nodal to the antinodal region, which is explained by the momentum dependence of the interlayer single-particle hopping. As possible mechanisms for the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature, the hybridization between the BQPs as well as the combination of phonon modes of the triple CuO_{2} layers and spin fluctuations represented by a four-well model are discussed.

Functional Regulatory Mechanisms Underlying Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell Senescence During Cell Passages

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation is an effective periodontal regenerative therapy. MSCs are multipotent, have self-renewal ability, and can differentiate into periodontal cells. However, senescence is inevitable for MSCs. In vitro, cell senescence can be induced by long-term culture with/without cell passage. However, the regulatory mechanism of MSC senescence remains unclear. Undifferentiated MSC-specific transcription factors can regulate MSC function. Herein, we identified the regulatory transcription factors involved in MSC senescence and elucidated their mechanisms of action. We cultured human MSCs (hMSCs) with repetitive cell passages to induce cell senescence and evaluated the mRNA and protein expression of cell senescence-related genes. Additionally, we silenced the cell senescence-induced transcription factors, GATA binding protein 6 (GATA6) and SRY-box 11 (SOX11), and investigated senescence-related signaling pathways. With repeated passages, the number of senescent cells increased, while the cell proliferation capacity decreased; GATA6 mRNA expression was upregulated and that of SOX11 was downregulated. Repetitive cell passages decreased Wnt and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling pathway-related gene expression. Silencing of GATA6 and SOX11 regulated Wnt and BMP signaling pathway-related genes and affected cell senescence-related genes; moreover, SOX11 silencing regulated GATA6 expression. Hence, we identified them as pair of regulatory transcription factors for cell senescence in hMSCs via the Wnt and BMP signaling pathways.

Inhibition of USP9X Downregulates JAK2-V617F and Induces Apoptosis Synergistically with BH3 Mimetics Preferentially in Ruxolitinib-Persistent JAK2-V617F-Positive Leukemic Cells

JAK2-V617F plays a key role in the pathogenesis of myeloproliferative neoplasm. However, its inhibitor ruxolitinib has shown limited clinical efficacies because of the ruxolitinib-persistent proliferation of JAK2-V617F-positive cells. We here demonstrate that the USP9X inhibitor WP1130 or EOAI3402143 (G9) inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis more efficiently in cells dependent on JAK2-V617F than on cytokine-activated JAK2. WP1130 preferentially downregulated activated and autophosphorylated JAK2-V617F by enhancing its K63-linked polyubiquitination and inducing its aggresomal translocation to block downstream signaling. Furthermore, JAK2-V617F associated physically with USP9X in leukemic HEL cells. Induction of apoptosis by inhibition of USP9X was mediated through the intrinsic mitochondria-mediated pathway, synergistically enhanced by BH3 mimetics, prevented by overexpression of Bcl-xL, and required oxidative stress to activate stress-related MAP kinases p38 and JNK as well as DNA damage responses in HEL cells. Although autophosphorylated JAK2-V617F was resistant to WP1130 in the ruxolitinib-persistent HEL-R cells, these cells expressed Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL at lower levels and showed an increased sensitivity to WP1130 as well as BH3 mimetics as compared with ruxolitinib-naive HEL cells. Thus, USP9X represents a promising target along with anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family members for novel therapeutic strategies against JAK2-V617F-positive myeloproliferative neoplasms, particularly under the ruxolitinib persistence conditions.

In-plane and out-of-plane properties of a BaFe2As2 single crystal

Anisotropy of transport and magnetic properties of parent compounds of iron based superconductors is a key ingredient of superconductivity. In this work, we investigate in-plane and out-of-plane properties, namely thermal, electric, thermoelectric transport and magnetic susceptibility in a high quality BaFe₂As₂ single crystal of the 122 parent compound, using a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Combining the ab initio calculation of the band structure and the measured in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity, we evaluate the scattering rates which turn out to be strongly anisotropic and determined by spin excitations in the antiferromagnetic state. The observed anisotropy of thermal conductivity is discussed in terms of anisotropy of sound velocities which we estimate to be [Formula: see text]. Remarkably, we find that thermal conductivity is characterized by a sizeable electronic contribution at low temperature, which is ascribed to the high purity of our crystal.

Inhibition of the STAT5/Pim Kinase Axis Enhances Cytotoxic Effects of Proteasome Inhibitors on FLT3-ITD-Positive AML Cells by Cooperatively Inhibiting the mTORC1/4EBP1/S6K/Mcl-1 Pathway

FLT3-ITD and FLT3-TKD are the most frequent tyrosine kinase mutations in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), with the former conferring a poor prognosis. We have recently revealed that FLT3-ITD confers resistance to the PI3K/AKT pathway inhibitors by protecting the mTORC1/4EBP1/Mcl-1 pathway through Pim kinases induced by STAT5 activation in AML. The proteasome inhibitor bortezomib has recently been reported as a promising agent for treatment of AML. Here, we show that the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib as well as carfilzomib induces apoptosis through the intrinsic pathway more conspicuously in cells transformed by FLT3-TKD than FLT3-ITD. Mechanistically, bortezomib upregulated the stress-regulated protein REDD1 and induced downregulation of the mTORC1 pathway more distinctively in cells transformed by FLT3-TKD than FLT-ITD, while overexpression of Pim-1 partly prevented this downregulation and apoptosis in FLT3-TKD-transformed cells. Genetic enhancement of the REDD1 induction or pharmacological inhibition of STAT5, Pim kinases, mTORC1, or S6K by specific inhibitors, such as pimozide, AZD1208, PIM447, rapamycin, and PF-4708671, accelerated the downregulation of mTORC1/Mcl-1 pathway to enhance bortezomib-induced apoptosis in FLT3-ITD-expressing cells, including primary AML cells, while overexpression of Mcl-1 prevented induction of apoptosis. Thus, FLT3-ITD confers a resistance to the proteasome inhibitors on AML cells by protecting the mTORC1/Mcl-1 pathway through the STAT5/Pim axis, and inhibition of these signaling events remarkably enhances the therapeutic efficacy.

Mechanisms for mTORC1 activation and synergistic induction of apoptosis by ruxolitinib and BH3 mimetics or autophagy inhibitors in JAK2-V617F-expressing leukemic cells including newly established PVTL-2

The activated JAK2-V617F mutant is very frequently found in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), and its inhibitor ruxolitinib has been in clinical use, albeit with limited efficacies. Here, we examine the signaling mechanisms from JAK2-V617F and responses to ruxolitinib in JAK2-V617F-positive leukemic cell lines, including PVTL-2, newly established from a patient with post-MPN secondary acute myeloid leukemia, and the widely used model cell line HEL. We have found that ruxolitinib downregulated the mTORC1/S6K/4EBP1 pathway at least partly through inhibition of the STAT5/Pim-2 pathway with concomitant downregulation of c-Myc, MCL-1, and BCL-xL as well as induction of autophagy in these cells. Ruxolitinib very efficiently inhibited proliferation but only modestly induced apoptosis. However, inhibition of BCL-xL/BCL-2 by the BH3 mimetics ABT-737 and navitoclax or BCL-xL by A-1331852 induced caspase-dependent apoptosis involving activation of Bak and Bax synergistically with ruxolitinib in HEL cells. On the other hand, the putative pan-BH3 mimetic obatoclax as well as chloroquine and bafilomycin A1 inhibited autophagy at its late stage and induced apoptosis in PVTL-2 cells synergistically with ruxolitinib. The present study suggests that autophagy as well as the anti-apoptotic BCL-2 family members, regulated at least partly by the mTORC1 pathway downstream of STAT5/Pim-2, protects JAK2-V617F-positive leukemic cells from ruxolitinib-induced apoptosis depending on cell types and may contribute to development of new strategies against JAK2-V617F-positive neoplasms.

A multi-throughput multi-organ-on-a-chip system on a plate formatted pneumatic pressure-driven medium circulation platform

This paper reports a multi-throughput multi-organ-on-a-chip system formed on a pneumatic pressure-driven medium circulation platform with a microplate-sized format as a novel type of microphysiological system. The pneumatic pressure-driven platform enabled parallelized multi-organ experiments (i.e. simultaneous operation of multiple multi-organ culture units) and pipette-friendly liquid handling for various conventional cell culture experiments, including cell seeding, medium change, live/dead staining, cell growth analysis, gene expression analysis of collected cells, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of chemical compounds in the culture medium. An eight-throughput two-organ system and a four-throughput four-organ system were constructed on a common platform, with different microfluidic plates. The two-organ system, composed of liver and cancer models, was used to demonstrate the effect of an anticancer prodrug, capecitabine (CAP), whose metabolite 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) after metabolism by HepaRG hepatic cells inhibited the proliferation of HCT-116 cancer cells. The four-organ system, composed of intestine, liver, cancer, and connective tissue models, was used to demonstrate evaluation of the effects of 5-FU and two prodrugs of 5-FU (CAP and tegafur) on multiple organ models, including cancer and connective tissue.

Molecular mechanisms for enhancement of stromal cell-derived factor 1-induced chemotaxis by platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1 (PECAM-1)

Platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule 1 (PECAM-1) is a cell adhesion protein involved in the regulation of cell adhesion and migration. Interestingly, several PECAM-1-deficient hematopoietic cells exhibit impaired chemotactic responses to stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1), a chemokine essential for B lymphopoiesis and bone marrow myelopoiesis. However, whether PECAM-1 is involved in SDF-1-regulated chemotaxis is unknown. We report here that SDF-1 induces tyrosine phosphorylation of PECAM-1 at its immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibition motifs in several hematopoietic cell lines via the Src family kinase Lyn, Bruton's tyrosine kinase, and JAK2 and that inhibition of these kinases reduced chemotaxis. Overexpression and knockdown of PECAM-1 enhanced and down-regulated, respectively, SDF-1-induced Gα_i-dependent activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTORC1 pathway and small GTPase Rap1 in hematopoietic 32Dcl3 cells, and these changes in activation correlated with chemotaxis. Furthermore, pharmacological or genetic inhibition of the PI3K/Akt/mTORC1 pathway or Rap1, respectively, revealed that these pathways are independently activated and required for SDF-1-induced chemotaxis. When coexpressed in 293T cells, PECAM-1 physically associated with the SDF-1 receptor CXCR4. Moreover, PECAM-1 overexpression and knockdown reduced and enhanced SDF-1-induced endocytosis of CXCR4, respectively. Furthermore, when expressed in 32Dcl3 cells, an endocytosis-defective CXCR4 mutant, CXCR4-S324A/S325A, could activate the PI3K/Akt/mTORC1 pathway as well as Rap1 and induce chemotaxis in a manner similar to PECAM-1 overexpression. These findings suggest that PECAM-1 enhances SDF-1-induced chemotaxis by augmenting and prolonging activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTORC1 pathway and Rap1 and that PECAM-1, at least partly, exerts its activity by inhibiting SDF-1-induced internalization of CXCR4.

Acute myeloid leukemia with t(3;21)(q26.2;q22) developing following low-dose methotrexate therapy for rheumatoid arthritis and expressing two AML1/MDS1/EVI1 fusion proteins: A case report

The t(3;21)(q26.2;q22) translocation is a rare chromosomal abnormality exhibited almost exclusively in therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome/acute myeloid leukemia (t-MDS/AML) or in the blastic crisis phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia, which results in the fusion of the runt related transcription factor 1 (RUNX1, also called AML1) gene at 21q22 to the myelodysplasia syndrome 1 (MDS1)-ecotropic virus integration site 1 (EVI1) complex locus (MECOM) at 3q26.2, generating various fusion transcripts, including AML1/MDS1/EVI1 (AME). The present study examined the case of an 84-year-old Japanese woman who developed t-MDS/AML with t(3;21)(q26.2;q22) subsequent to receiving low-dose methotrexate (MTX) treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. Following treatment with MTX for 6 years, the patient developed anemia and neutropenia, and MTX was discontinued. A total of 3 years later, the patient was diagnosed with MDS with t(3;21)(q26.2;q22) and del (5q), which progressed rapidly to AML within 3 months. The patients was subsequently treated with azacitidine and cytarabine chemotherapy, but succumbed to the disease 6 months after diagnosis. Sequencing analysis of the nested reverse transcription-PCR products from the leukemic cells revealed the expression of two types of alternatively-spliced AME transcripts with or without RUNX1 exon 6 sequences. Western blot analysis of the leukemic cells of the patient additionally revealed that the corresponding AME fusion protein products were expressed at high levels, and that these cells also prominently expressed CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α, the repression of which has been reported to be involved in leukemogenesis mediated by AME. To the best of our knowledge, the case discussed in the present study represents the first report of MDS/AML with t(3;21)(q26.2;q22) developing following low-dose MTX therapy for rheumatoid arthritis. Nonetheless, the clinical and molecular features of the patient in the present study were representative of those patients who typically develop this disease following exposure to chemotherapy or radiotherapy for primary malignancy, which implicates MTX in the pathogenesis of t-MDS/AML. Moreover, we confirmed the expression of two AME fusion proteins for the first time in primary leukemic cells and analyzed several cellular factors implicated in AME-mediated leukemogenesis to gain some insight into its molecular mechanisms.

The clinical features of fatal cyclophosphamide-induced cardiotoxicity in a conditioning regimen for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT)

Cyclophosphamide (CY) cardiotoxicity induces a rare lethal complication associated with its use. The minimum dose for cardiac toxicity is still not known, although there are no reports of CY toxicity at doses of less than 100 mg/kg. There are few studies of CY cardiotoxicity that included a large number of patients who received high-dose CY for conditioning for allogeneic stem cell transplant (allo-HSCT). To elucidate the clinical course, complications, true incidence, and risk factors, the cardiac events of 811 patients who received more than a total of 100 mg/kg of CY as conditioning for allo-HSCT were analyzed. Twelve of 811 recipients (1.5 %) developed fatal cardiac failure induced by CY at a median of 4 (range 2-8) days after the first administration of CY. Regarding the dose of CY, 8.5, 1.2, and 0 % of the patients developed cardiac failure among the patients treated with a total of 200, 120, and 100 mg/kg CY, respectively. On echocardiography, the E/A ratio shows diastolic dysfunction but not the ejection fraction changed in the early course. Moreover, a short time to the first symptom after the administration of CY tended to be associated with early death (p = 0.09). Eleven patients died from progressive acute cardiac failure at day 7 (5-30) after the first administration of CY, and only one patient survived. In summary, fatal CY cardiotoxicity with allo-HSCT is a rare complication, but it is associated with high mortality. The possibility of CY-induced cardiotoxicity must be considered early after the administration of CY.

[Myelofibrosis ameliorated after treatment for nontuberculous mycobacterial infection]

A 42-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of continuous fever, anemia, and immature myeloid cells in peripheral blood. Bone marrow biopsy revealed severe myelofibrosis (MF). We performed computed tomography and identified several swollen mediastinal lymph nodes and nodules in the right upper lung. Lymph node biopsy showed an infection with Mycobacterium intracellulare (M. intracellulare), a nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM). Antituberculosis drugs led to remission of the NTM infection. Bone marrow biopsy revealed marked improvement in MF and red blood cell infusion was not required after therapy. No prior cases of concomitant NTM with M. intracellulare and MF have been reported. This is thus the first reported case showing improvement of myelofibrosis after NTM treatment. This case report offers valuable insights into the pathology of MF.

Reappraisal of the taxonomy of Streptococcus suis serotypes 20, 22 and 26: Streptococcus parasuis sp. nov

In order to clarify the taxonomic position of serotypes 20, 22 and 26 of Streptococcus suis , biochemical and molecular genetic studies were performed on isolates (SUT-7, SUT-286T, SUT-319, SUT-328 and SUT-380) reacted with specific antisera of serotypes 20, 22 or 26 from the saliva of healthy pigs as well as reference strains of serotypes 20, 22 and 26. Comparative recN gene sequencing showed high genetic relatedness among our isolates, but marked differences from the type strain S. suis NCTC 10234T, i.e. 74.8–75.7 % sequence similarity. The genomic relatedness between the isolates and other strains of species of the genus Streptococcus , including S. suis, was calculated using the average nucleotide identity values of whole genome sequences, which indicated that serotypes 20, 22 and 26 should be removed taxonomically from S. suis and treated as a novel genomic species. Comparative sequence analysis revealed 99.0–100 % sequence similarities for the 16S rRNA genes between the reference strains of serotypes 20, 22 and 26, and our isolates. Isolate STU-286T had relatively high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with S. suis NCTC 10234T (98.8 %). SUT-286T could be distinguished from S. suis and other closely related species of the genus Streptococcus using biochemical tests. Due to its phylogenetic and phenotypic similarities to S. suis we propose naming the novel species Streptococcus parasuis sp. nov., with SUT-286T ( = JCM 30273T = DSM 29126T) as the type strain.

Normal-state charge dynamics in doped BaFe₂As₂: roles of doping and necessary ingredients for superconductivity

In high-transition-temperature superconducting cuprates and iron arsenides, chemical doping plays an important role in inducing superconductivity. Whereas in the cuprate case, the dominant role of doping is to inject charge carriers, the role for the iron arsenides is complex owing to carrier multiplicity and the diversity of doping. Here, we present a comparative study of the in-plane resistivity and the optical spectrum of doped BaFe₂As₂, which allows for separation of coherent (itinerant) and incoherent (highly dissipative) charge dynamics. The coherence of the system is controlled by doping, and the doping evolution of the charge dynamics exhibits a distinct difference between electron and hole doping. It is found in common with any type of doping that superconductivity with high transition temperature emerges when the normal-state charge dynamics maintains incoherence and when the resistivity associated with the coherent channel exhibits dominant temperature-linear dependence.

Development of a high power supercontinuum source in the 1.7 μm wavelength region for highly penetrative ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography

We developed a high power supercontinuum source at a center wavelength of 1.7 μm to demonstrate highly penetrative ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography (UHR-OCT). A single-wall carbon nanotube dispersed in polyimide film was used as a transparent saturable absorber in the cavity configuration and a high-repetition-rate ultrashort-pulse fiber laser was realized. The developed SC source had an output power of 60 mW, a bandwidth of 242 nm full-width at half maximum, and a repetition rate of 110 MHz. The average power and repetition rate were approximately twice as large as those of our previous SC source [20]. Using the developed SC source, UHR-OCT imaging was demonstrated. A sensitivity of 105 dB and an axial resolution of 3.2 μm in biological tissue were achieved. We compared the UHR-OCT images of some biological tissue samples measured with the developed SC source, the previous one, and one operating in the 1.3 μm wavelength region. We confirmed that the developed SC source had improved sensitivity and penetration depth for low-water-absorption samples.

A 6-week oral gavage toxicity study of a novel galacto-oligosaccharide in juvenile rats

A novel galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) was administered by gavage to groups (10 males and 10 females) of Sprague-Dawley specific pathogen-free rats for 6 weeks from day 4 after birth at doses of 0, 500, 1000, or 2000 mg/kg/day. Each pup was subjected to a variety of observations to examine for development effects/changes after birth: general condition, clinical signs, functional examinations, grip strength and spontaneous movement, body weight and feed consumption, external differentiation, ophthalmological examination, urinalysis (including water consumption), hematology, blood chemistry, necropsy, organ weight, and histopathology. During the study period, no deaths occurred in any group and there were no observed effects from administration of GOS. Therefore, it was concluded that GOS had no effects on the development of animals 4 days after birth. Since, there were no abnormalities due to administration of GOS in the macroscopic examination, organ weight or histopathology of the reproductive organs or differentiation (incisor eruption and eyelid opening) of males or females, it was concluded that repeated oral administration of GOS at 2000 mg/kg/day for 6 weeks from day 4 after birth hadno effects on postnatal development. The no observed effect level of GOS by repeated oral administration for 6 weeks from day 4 after birth was 2000 mg/kg/day for both males and females under the conditions of this study.

Evaluating the masticatory function after mandibulectomy with colour-changing chewing gum

The aim of this study was to clarify the usefulness of colour-changing gum in evaluating masticatory performance after mandibulectomy. Thirty-nine patients who underwent mandibulectomy between 1982 and 2010 at Kobe University Hospital were recruited in this study. There were 21 male and 18 female subjects with a mean age of 64·7 years (range: 12-89 years) at the time of surgery. The participants included six patients who underwent marginal mandibulectomy, 21 patients who underwent segmental mandibulectomy and 12 patients who underwent hemimandibulectomy. The masticatory function was evaluated using colour-changing chewing gum, gummy jelly and a modified Sato's questionnaire. In all cases, the data were obtained more than 3 months after completing the patient's final prosthesis. The colour-changing gum scores correlated with both the gummy jelly scores (r = 0·634, P < 0·001) and the total scores of the modified Sato's questionnaire (r = 0·537, P < 0·001). In conclusion, colour-changing gum is a useful item for evaluating masticatory performance after mandibulectomy.

Anisotropy of the in-plane resistivity of underdoped Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 superconductors induced by impurity scattering in the antiferromagnetic orthorhombic phase

We investigated the in-plane resistivity anisotropy for underdoped Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))(2)As(2) single crystals with improved quality. We demonstrate that the anisotropy in resistivity in the magnetostructural ordered phase arises from the anisotropy in the residual component which increases in proportion to the Co concentration x. This gives evidence that the anisotropy originates from the impurity scattering by Co atoms substituted for the Fe sites, rather than the so far proposed mechanisms such as the anisotropy of Fermi velocities of reconstructed Fermi surface pockets. As doping proceeds to the paramagnetic-tetragonal phase, a Co impurity transforms to a weak and isotropic scattering center.

Relation between the nodal and antinodal gap and critical temperature in superconducting Bi2212

An energy gap is, in principle, a dominant parameter in superconductivity. However, this view has been challenged for the case of high-T_c cuprates, because anisotropic evolution of a d-wave-like superconducting gap with underdoping has been difficult to formulate along with a critical temperature T_c. Here we show that a nodal-gap energy 2Δ_N closely follows 8.5 k_BT_c with underdoping and is also proportional to the product of an antinodal gap energy Δ^* and a square-root superfluid density √P_s for Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+δ, using low-energy synchrotron-radiation angle-resolved photoemission. The quantitative relations imply that the distinction between the nodal and antinodal gaps stems from the separation of the condensation and formation of electron pairs, and that the nodal-gap suppression represents the substantial phase incoherence inherent in a strong-coupling superconducting state. These simple gap-based formulae reasonably describe a crucial part of the unconventional mechanism governing T_c.

In conventional superconductors, the critical temperature is proportional to the superconducting energy gap, but this is not so in unconventional superconductors. Anzai et al. identify an alternative relationship involving nodal and antinodal gaps in an underdoped cuprate superconductor.

Effect of Co doping on the in-plane anisotropy in the optical spectrum of underdoped Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2

We investigate the anisotropy in the in-plane optical spectra of detwinned Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))(2)As(2). The optical conductivity spectrum of BaFe(2)As(2) shows appreciable anisotropy in the magnetostructural ordered phase, whereas the dc (ω = 0) resistivity is nearly isotropic at low temperatures. Upon Co doping, the resistivity becomes highly anisotropic, while the finite-energy intrinsic anisotropy is suppressed. It is found that anisotropy in resistivity arises from anisotropic impurity scattering due to the presence of doped Co atoms, and it is extrinsic in origin. The intensity of a specific optical phonon mode is also found to show striking anisotropy in the ordered phase. The anisotropy induced by the Co impurity and that observed in the optical phonon mode are hallmarks of the highly polarizable electronic state in the ordered phase.
