Infants’ Prediction of Humanoid Robot’s Goal-Directed Action

Several studies have shown that infants anticipate human goal-directed actions, but not robot’s ones. However, the studies focusing on the robot goal-directed actions have mainly analyzed the effect of mechanical arms on infant’s attention. To date, the prediction of goal-directed actions in infants has not yet been studied when the agent is a humanoid robot. Given this lack of evidence in infancy research, the present study aims at analyzing infants’ action anticipation of both a human’s and a humanoid robot’s goal-directed action. Data were acquired on thirty 17-month-old infants, watching four video clips, where either a human or a humanoid robot performed a goal-directed action, i.e. reaching a target. Infants looking behavior was measured through the eye-tracking technique. The results showed that infants anticipated the goal-directed action of both the human and the robot and there were no differences in the anticipatory gaze behavior between the two agents. Furthermore, the findings indicated different attentional patterns for the human and the robot, showing a greater attention paid to the robot's face than the human’s face. Overall, the results suggest that 17-month-old infants may infer also humanoid robot’ underlying action goals.

Influence of carbon source on wood decay-associated gene expression in sequential hyphal zones of the brown rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum

Brown rot fungi show a two-step wood degradation mechanism comprising oxidative radical-based and enzymatic saccharification systems. Recent studies have demonstrated that the brown rot fungus Rhodonia placenta expresses oxidoreductase genes ahead of glycoside hydrolase genes and spatially protects the saccharification enzymes from oxidative damage of the oxidoreductase reactions. This study aimed to assess the generality of the spatial gene regulation of these genes in other brown rot fungi and examine the effects of carbon source on the gene regulation. Gene expression analysis was performed on 14 oxidoreductase and glycoside hydrolase genes in the brown rot fungus Gloeophyllum trabeum, directionally grown on wood, sawdust-agar, and glucose-agar wafers. In G. trabeum, both oxidoreductase and glycoside hydrolase genes were expressed at higher levels in sections behind the wafers. The upregulation of glycoside hydrolase genes was significantly higher in woody substrates than in glucose, whereas the oxidoreductase gene expression was not affected by substrates.

The understanding of congruent and incongruent referential gaze in 17-month-old infants: an eye-tracking study comparing human and robot

Several studies have shown that the human gaze, but not the robot gaze, has significant effects on infant social cognition and facilitate social engagement. The present study investigates early understanding of the referential nature of gaze by comparing-through the eye-tracking technique-infants' response to human and robot's gaze. Data were acquired on thirty-two 17-month-old infants, watching four video clips, where either a human or a humanoid robot performed an action on a target. The agent's gaze was either turned to the target (congruent) or opposite to it (incongruent). The results generally showed that, independent of the agent, the infants attended longer at the face area compared to the hand and target. Additionally, the effect of referential gaze on infants' attention to the target was greater when infants watched the human compared to the robot's action. These results suggest the presence, in infants, of two distinct levels of gaze-following mechanisms: one recognizing the other as a potential interactive partner, the second recognizing partner's agency. In this study, infants recognized the robot as a potential interactive partner, whereas ascribed agency more readily to the human, thus suggesting that the process of generalizability of gazing behaviour to non-humans is not immediate.

Presence of extracellular NAD(+) and NADH in cultures of wood-degrading fungi

Our previous studies indicated that extracellular glycoproteins produced by some white-rot and brown-rot basidiomycetous fungi reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II) and O2 to H2O2 and produce hydroxyl radicals. The continuous generation of hydroxyl radicals requires a constant supply of O2 and an electron donor for the reduction of oxidized forms of the glycoproteins to the reduced forms. However, electron donors for this reaction, such as NADH, have not been identified. In this study, the amounts of the extracellular pyridine coenzymes, NAD(＋) and NADH, were measured in agar cultures of four white-rot fungi, one brown-rot fungus, and three soft-rot fungi. The sums of NAD(＋) and NADH detected in wood-containing cultures of all five basidiomycetes were greater than those in glucose cultures. The amounts of NAD(＋) were higher than those of NADH in all wood-containing cultures except that of Irpex lacteus, and NAD(＋) was greater than NADH in all glucose cultures except that of Fomitopsis palustris. Significant amounts of pyridine coenzymes were present in glucose and wood-containing cultures of the three soft-rot fungi. The non-wood-degrading fungus, Penicillium funiculosum, did not produce NAD(＋) or NADH in either glucose or wood-containing cultures. The extracellular pyridine coenzyme levels were relatively high compared to the rates of extracellular hydroxyl radical generation in wood-degrading fungal cultures. Thus, white-, brown-, and soft-rot fungi produce pyridine coenzymes that could serve as electron donors for the production of hydroxyl radicals during wood degradation.

Alteration of Adults' Subjective Feeling of Familiarity toward Infants' Sounds

Many adults may have lower subjective feelings of familiarity toward infants' vocalizations since infants' sounds are different from those of adults. However, mothers frequently exposed to infants' vocalizations may be more familiar and less averse. To test this hypothesis, 21 mothers ( M age = 31.1 yr., SD = 4.3) of infants ( M age = 8.2 mo., SD = 3.5), 18 mothers ( M age = 34.4 yr., SD = 4.8) of children between two and five years of age ( M age = 2.8 yr., SD = 1.0), and 17 women ( M age = 29.2 yr., SD = 11.1) with no children were exposed to 20 types of sounds. Of these sounds, 14 were produced by infants. Although the mothers of infants did not recognize sounds as those of an infant's vocalization, they showed higher subjective feelings of familiarity toward the timbres of the vowel-like stimuli than did the other groups. By contrast, the subjective feelings of familiarity for nonspeech sounds did not differ among groups. Maternal experiences may change women's recognition of perceived sounds.

Effect of norharmane in vitro on juvenile hormone epoxide hydrolase activity in the lower termite, Reticulitermes speratus

The aromatic beta-carboline norharmane was determined in workers, nymphs, and ergatoids of Reticulitermes speratus (Kolbe) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Norharmane levels in workers, nymphs, and ergatoids collected in May (approximately 4.3 ng/termite) were higher than those in November (approximately 0.2 ng/termite). Fluorescence of norharmane was observed in histological sections in whole animals and in the fat body. Norharmane, at a final concentration of 1 mM, stimulated juvenile hormone epoxide hydrolase (JHEH) activity of enzyme extract from ergatoids, but inhibited JHEH activity at higher concentrations. The elevated JHEH activity stimulated by norharmane should accelerate juvenile hormone metabolism in R. speratus.

Mesenchymal stem cells facilitate the induction of mixed hematopoietic chimerism and islet allograft tolerance without GVHD in the rat

Induction of hematopoietic chimerism and subsequent donor-specific immune tolerance via bone marrow transplantation is an ideal approach for islet transplantation to treat type-1 diabetes. We examined the potential of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in the induction of chimerism and islet allograft tolerance without the incidence of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Streptozotocin-diabetic rats received a conditioning regimen consisting of antilymphocyte serum and 5 Gy total body irradiation, followed by an intraportal co-infusion of allogeneic MSCs, bone marrow cells (BMCs) and islets. Although all the recipients rejected the islets initially, half of them developed stable mixed chimerism and donor-specific immune tolerance, shown by the engraftment of donor skin and second-set islet transplants and acute rejection of a third-party skin. The engraftment of the primary islet allografts with stable chimerism was achieved by the addition of a 2-week peritransplant administration of 15-deoxyspergualin (DSG). Without MSCs, none of the recipients treated with DSG developed chimerism or reversal of diabetes. GVHD was not observed in any of the recipients infused with MSCs (0/15), whereas it occurred in 4/11 recipients without MSCs. These results indicate a potential use of MSCs for induction of hematopoietic chimerism and subsequent immune tolerance in clinical islet transplantation.

Characterization of a hydroxyl-radical-producing glycoprotein and its presumptive genes from the white-rot basidiomycete Phanerochaete chrysosporium

During wood decay, the white-rot basidiomycete Phanerochaete chrysosporium secretes low-molecular-mass glycoproteins that catalyze a redox reaction between O(2) and electron donors to produce hydroxyl radical. This reaction accounts for most of the hydroxyl radical produced in wood-degrading cultures of P. chrysosporium. In combination with phenol oxidases, hydroxyl radical is believed to play a role in lignin degradation. The secreted glycoproteins also reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II) and strongly bind Fe(II). The partially purified glycoproteins contain 1-amino-1-deoxy-2-ketose (ketoamine) produced by the condensation of side-chain amino groups and carbohydrate. cDNAs and two putative genes encoding these glycoproteins, glp1 and glp2, have been isolated and sequenced. The 875bp glp1 and 864bp glp2 are found on scaffold 2 of the P. chrysosporium genome. These presumptive genes each consist of seven introns and eight exons. The latter encode a predicted protein of 138 amino acids and a 22-amino-acid signal sequence for secretion. The predicted protein sequences are nearly identical to N-terminal and internal sequences obtained from the partially purified glycoprotein. The molecular masses of the deduced mature proteins, 13,981 (glp1) and 13,970 (glp2), coincide with the molecular mass of the glycoprotein as determined by tricine-SDS-PAGE.

Phylogeny of Vertebrate Src Tyrosine Kinases Revealed by the Epitope Region of mAb327

Mass fingerprinting and MS/MS analysis demonstrated that Xyk, a 57-kDa Src family tyrosine kinase that is activated within minutes of Xenopus egg fertilization, comprises a mixture of two Src proteins, Src1 and Src2. However, the Xenopus Src protein, denoted as xSrc, is hardly detectable with mAb327, a universal Src-specific antibody, whose target sequence has not yet been determined. We show that a point amino acid substitution in the Src homology 3 domain of xSrc is critical for improvement of the low efficiency of its recognition by mAb327. Namely, a point-mutated xSrc, in which Arg-121 was replaced by His that is conserved among mAb327-reactive Src in mammals and chicken, showed increased recognition by mAb327. On the other hand, a mutant chicken Src, in which the His-122 residue is replaced by Arg, showed decreased recognition by mAb327. Genomic sequencing analysis also demonstrated that reptile Src proteins are of either the R-type (snake) or H-type (caiman, turtle, and tortoise). These studies revealed, for the first time, a critical amino acid in the Src SH3 domain for mAb327 recognition, and suggest a novel scheme for the molecular evolution of Src, in which the H-type Src(s) are monophyletic and derived from the R-type Src.

Identification of two subterranean termite species (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) using cellulase genes

To identify subterranean termite species, we designed a pair of common primers that amplified 381-bp fragments from cDNAs encoding the endo-beta-1,4-glucanases (EGases) of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki and Reticulitermes speratus (Kolbe). cDNAs from C. formosanus and R. speratus, and genomic DNA from R. speratus, were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by using this primer pair and then cloned and sequenced. Sequences amplified from C.formosanus cDNA displayed 97-99% identity to cDNA encoding the EGase of C. formosanus (CfEG), and 92-94% identity to cDNA encoding the EGase of R. speratus (RsEG). By contrast, cDNA from R. speratus displayed 99-100% identity to RsEG cDNA and 93-94% identity to CfEG cDNA. CfEG and RsEG cDNAs can therefore be used as markers for the identification of these termite species. This is the first report of the successful identification of termite species by using cDNA and genomic DNA sequences of termite origin.

Expression of Golf in the rat placenta: Possible implication in olfactory receptor transduction

Olfactory receptors are G-protein coupled receptors and are encoded by an extremely large and diverse family of genes in mammals. There is increasing evidence that olfactory receptors are widely distributed in many organs, suggesting that olfactory receptors do not only recognize airborne odorants but also play important roles in chemotaxis or organ construction in embryo. In this study, we investigated whether olfactory receptors and their transduction molecule, Golf are expressed in the rat placenta. By RT-PCR, we identified 11 different olfactory receptor genes, which are all members of class II, in the rat placenta cDNAs, and our results suggested that particular members of the olfactory receptor gene family might be preferentially expressed in the placenta. By western blot analysis, we demonstrated that Golf protein is expressed in the placenta and its expression levels are developmentally regulated. We found that Golf immunoreactivity is exclusively localized to giant cell trophoblasts and spongiotrophoblast cells. These findings raised a possibility that a particular subset of olfactory receptors might be coupled with Golf and function in giant cell trophoblasts and spongiotrophoblast cells.

Regulation of Src kinase activity during Xenopus oocyte maturation

Expression of constitutively active Src protein tyrosine kinase in Xenopus oocytes has been shown to accelerate oocyte maturation suggesting that Src may be involved in meiotic progression. However, meiotic regulation of endogenous Src kinase in oocytes has not been investigated in detail. To address this problem, we measured the activity, expression level, and phosphorylation state of the endogenous Xenopus Src (xSrc) and overexpressed xSrc mutants in the process of progesterone-induced oocyte maturation. We found that the enzyme is first transiently activated in the plasma membrane-containing fraction of oocytes within 3 min of progesterone administration. This event represents one of the earliest responses of oocytes to the hormone and should be related to triggering some early signaling pathways of maturation. Thereafter, xSrc activity increases again at the time of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) and remains elevated till the completion of maturation. This elevation of xSrc activity is associated with a 2-fold increase of xSrc protein content in the absence of change in its specific activity and xSrc mRNA content. No significant changes in the phosphorylation state of C-terminal regulatory phosphotyrosine can be registered either in endogenous xSrc or in overexpressed kinase-negative and wild-type xSrc proteins during maturation. Altogether, these results indicate that upregulation of xSrc in the meiotic metaphase occurs at the translation level. We also demonstrate here that the expression of constitutively active xSrc in Xenopus oocytes is accompanied by the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Our data suggest that the Src kinase acts through the MAPK pathway to accelerate oocyte maturation.

Pyruvate and acetate metabolism in termite mitochondria

Intact mitochondria have been successfully prepared from body tissues from the termites Nasutitermes walkeri and Coptotermes formosanus. This is the first report of the successful isolation of mitochondria from termites (Isoptera: Termitidae). Using an oxygen electrode, oxygen consumption by the mitochondria during the oxidation of various respiratory substrates was determined and their properties measured in terms of respiratory control index and ADP/O. ADP/O was as expected for substrates such as pyruvate, acetylcarnitine and acetyl-CoA and carnitine. Pyruvate and acetate were the major respiratory substrates in both species. The total activity of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDHc) in the mitochondria from N. walkeri and C. formosanus was determined to be 72.87+/-8.98 and 8.29+/-0.42 nmol/termite/h, respectively. Mitochondria isolated in the presence of inhibitors of PDHc interconversion were used to determine that about 60% of the PDHc was maintained in the active form in both N. walkeri and C. formosanus. The sufficient PDHc activity and high rate of pyruvate oxidation in mitochondria from N. walkeri suggest that pyruvate is rapidly metabolised, whereas the low mitochondrial PDHc activity of C. formosanus suggests that in this species more pyruvate is produced than can be oxidised in the termite tissues.

Interarm interaction of DNA cruciform forming at a short inverted repeat sequence

A novel interarm interaction of DNA cruciform forming at inverted repeat sequence was characterized using an S1 nuclease digestion, permanganate oxidation, and microscopic imaging. An inverted repeat consisting of 17 bp complementary sequences was isolated from the bluegill sunfish Lepomis macrochirus (Perciformes) and subcloned into the pUC19 plasmid, after which the supercoiled recombinant plasmid was subjected to enzymatic and chemical modification. In high salt conditions (200 mM NaCl, or 100-200 mM KCl), S1 nuclease cut supercoiled DNA at the center of palindromic symmetry, suggesting the formation of DNA cruciform. On the other hand, S1 nuclease in the presence of 150 mM NaCl or less cleaved mainly the 3'-half of the repeat, thereby forming an unusual structure in which the 3'-half of the inverted repeat, but not the 5'-half, was retained as an unpaired strand. Permanganate oxidation profiles also supported the presence of single-stranded part in the 3'-half of the inverted repeat in addition to the center of the symmetry. Both electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy have detected a thick protrusion on the supercoiled DNA harboring the inverted repeat. We hypothesize that the cruciform hairpins at conditions favoring triplex formation adopt a parallel side-by-side orientation of the arms allowing the interaction between them supposedly stabilized by hydrogen bonding of base triads.

Towards the molecular dissection of fertilization signaling: Our functional genomic/proteomic strategies

Recent advances in DNA sequencing techniques and automated informatics has led to clarification of all genome sequence of some model organisms in a very short period. The demonstration of the first draft sequence of the human genome has prompted us to elaborate new approaches in biology, pharmacology and medicine. Such new research will focus on high throughput methods to function on collections of genes, and hopefully, on a genome-wide, quantitative modeling of the cell system as a whole. In this review article, we discuss the present status of "post genome sequencing" approaches in line with our strategies for understanding the molecular mechanism of fertilization and activation of development using the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, as a model system.

Molecular dynamics of MHC genesis unraveled by sequence analysis of the 1,796,938-bp HLA class I region

The intensely studied MHC has become the paradigm for understanding the architectural evolution of vertebrate multigene families. The 4-Mb human MHC (also known as the HLA complex) encodes genes critically involved in the immune response, graft rejection, and disease susceptibility. Here we report the continuous 1,796,938-bp genomic sequence of the HLA class I region, linking genes between MICB and HLA-F. A total of 127 genes or potentially coding sequences were recognized within the analyzed sequence, establishing a high gene density of one per every 14.1 kb. The identification of 758 microsatellite provides tools for high-resolution mapping of HLA class I-associated disease genes. Most importantly, we establish that the repeated duplication and subsequent diversification of a minimal building block, MIC-HCGIX-3.8-1-P5-HCGIV-HLA class I-HCGII, engendered the present-day MHC. That the currently nonessential HLA-F and MICE genes have acted as progenitors to today's immune-competent HLA-ABC and MICA/B genes provides experimental evidence for evolution by "birth and death," which has general relevance to our understanding of the evolutionary forces driving vertebrate multigene families.

Hydroxyl radical generation by an extracellular low-molecular-weight substance and phenol oxidase activity during wood degradation by the white-rot basidiomycete Trametes versicolor

One-electron oxidation activity, as measured by ethylene generation from 2-keto-4-thiomethylbutyric acid, phenol oxidase activity, and the generation of hydroxyl radical were examined in cultures of the lignin-degrading white-rot basidiomycete fungus, Trametes (Coriolus) versicolor. The activity levels of specific lignin-degrading enzymes and cellulases, as well as the rate of wood degradation, also were examined. The fungus secreted a low-molecular-weight substance (M(r) 1000-5000) that catalyzed a redox reaction between molecular oxygen and an electron donor, to produce the hydroxyl radical via hydrogen peroxide. During wood decay, T. versicolor also produced significant amounts of laccase and lignin peroxidase, carboxymethyl cellulase, and Avicelase. The roles of the hydroxyl radical, phenol oxidases, and cellulases in wood degradation by white-rot fungi are discussed. That the hydroxyl radical produced by the low-molecular-weight substance secreted by T. versicolor results in new phenolic substructures on the lignin polymer, making it susceptible to attack by laccase or manganese peroxidase is suggested.

Mapping of a novel human carbonyl reductase, CBR3, and ribosomal pseudogenes to human chromosome 21q22.2

To find the genes contributing to Down syndrome, we constructed a 4-Mb sequence-ready map spanning chromosome 21q22.2 with megabase-sized cosmid/P1-derived artificial chromosome (PAC) contigs. The restriction map with rare cutting enzymes, followed by sequencing from the clustering sites, has defined CpG islands and revealed the genes associated with CpG islands (Accession No. D85771). Of these, two human carbonyl reductases (CBR; EC1.1.1.184) were found in a PAC 25P16 clone. CBR catalyzes the reduction of a large number of biologically and pharmacologically active carbonyl compounds to their corresponding alcohols and has been mapped in 21q22.1. To confirm these results, we sequenced the PAC clone in shotgun strategies and identified a novel carbonyl reductase, designated CBR3, 62 kb downstream from the original CBR. In addition, three ribosomal pseudogenes, L23a, S9, and L3, and some cDNAs with ESTs were mapped in the sequence. In conclusion, the sequence analysis for CpG islands predicted from the megabase-sized contigs will reveal and identify the genes involved in Down syndrome.

Use of experimenter-given cues during object-choice tasks by chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), an orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), and human infants (Homo sapiens)

In a series of experiments, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), an orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), and human infants (Homo sapiens) were investigated as to whether they used experimenter-given cues when responding to object-choice tasks. Five conditions were used in different phases: the experimenter tapping on the correct object, gazing plus pointing, gazing closely, gazing alone, and glancing without head orientation. The 3 subject species were able to use all of the experimenter-given cues, in contrast to previous reports of limited use of such cues by monkeys.

Manual action in infant chimpanzees: a preliminary study

In human infants, index finger extension is shown frequently even from 3 months old, and it is considered that such pointing develops into deictic and communicative pointing however, there are many reports that chimpanzees do not point with the index finger. In the present study the manual actions of two infant chimpanzees were observed when the experimenter was trying to make eye contact with them. The result shows that pointing was shown very rarely by these infant chimpanzees even morphologically.

Differentiated responses to different human conditions by chimpanzees

Chimpanzees' responses to human conditions were investigated. In the experimental condition, the experimenter pretended to injure the index finger, and in the control condition, the experimenter smiled and waved her hand to the chimpanzees. Although looking behavior was observed in both conditions, there was a difference in these types of behavior. Subjects seemed to concentrate their gaze on the experimenter's behavior in the experimental condition. The finding suggests the possibility that such different behaviors may be a basis for empathic behavior similar to that of human infants.

Recognition of line-drawing representations by a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)

The ability of a chimpanzee to recognize individuals portrayed in line drawings was evaluated. A 12-year-old female chimpanzee with extensive prior experience in the use of visual symbols matched the line drawings of chimpanzees, humans, and an orangutan with a specific letter of the alphabet. When a line drawing of a familiar individual was presented on the computer screen, the chimpanzee responded by punching a key with the letter of the alphabet that corresponded to the individual's name. Results indicate that the chimpanzee is able to categorize individuals from novel line-drawing representations.

Cutaneous pattern perception on foreheads in 3- and 4-year-old children

In the present study, we investigated how 3- and 4-year-old children perceived mirror-image stimuli traced on their foreheads. First, the subjects were taught matching-to-sample tasks with symmetrically shaped and asymmetrically shaped figures (called mirror-image stimuli) on cards. Then the subjects were taught cutaneous perception of a figure traced by the experimenter's finger on the forehead. Last, the subjects were tested with mirror-image stimuli in cutaneous perception tasks. The results of these experiments indicated that the subjects who could discriminate the mirror-image stimuli could also perceive asymmetrical stimuli as mirror reversals.

An exploratory study of mirror-image shape discrimination in young children: vision and touch

30 children (18 boys and 12 girls) with a mean age of 4 yr., 8. mo. were subjects in an experiment testing the relative dominance of visual and tactual modalities in mirror-image shape discrimination. The sets of unfamiliar stimuli (written and wooden letters of the English alphabet, P, B, C, U, R, F) were presented to the children randomly. Children matched the stimulus with either another visual or another tactual shape. Analysis suggests touch is not inferior to vision in mirror-image shape discrimination. These results are different from those of previous reports comparing tactual and visual discrimination with nonmirror-image patterns.

Force-generating domain of myosin motor

To understand the underlying mechanism of force generation by myosin motor, it is crucial to know which part of the molecule is essential for the process. Recent structure determination of myosin motor domain at atomic resolution has revealed that the domain comprises two smaller domains, the "ATPase domain" consisting of only an N-terminal segment of the heavy chain and the "neck domain" consisting of a long alpha-helix of the heavy chain and two light chains. This atomic structure begs the question of whether both domains are required for force generation. To answer it, we genetically truncated the head to generate a recombinant fragment composed of the "ATPase domain" alone. The truncated head drove sliding movement of actin filaments and generated force in a novel in vitro assay system, which allows us to hold a specific site of the head on a glass surface. These results indicate that the compact ATPase domain functions as a force-generating machinery of the myosin motor.

Emotional behavior during the learning of a contingency task in a chimpanzee

A female chimpanzee's behavior was videotaped during the learning of contingency tasks and used to code her facial expressions, vocal expressions, and other behavior. The chimpanzee showed negative emotional behaviors to negative feedback and seemed to depend not only on the lack of food as reward. A chimpanzee, named Ai, received feeding training with two other apes. Ai was always fed with the green bowl; the other two apes were fed with different colored bowls. After this training, Ai could make symbolic associations between objects and individuals by using an artificial visual language, based only on her observation of bowls used in feeding without specific training.

Changes in subgenome types of adenovirus type 4 isolated from patients with ocular disease between 1985 and 1989 in Sapporo, Japan

A total of 122 adenovirus type 4 (Ad4) strains isolated from patients with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis at an eye clinic in Sapporo, Japan, from 1985 to 1989 were identified as Ad4a. By the use of HinfI and TaqI restriction endonucleases, these Ad4a strains were classified into 12 subgenome types. During this observation period, two epidemics of Ad4 infection relating to epidemic keratoconjunctivitis occurred. During the Ad4a epidemic in 1985, three subgenome types became predominant successively. However, except for one strain, the prevalent strains isolated during the epidemic of Ad4a in 1988 all belonged to a single subgenome type. In the years when an Ad4a epidemic was not observed, such Ad4a strains were new or previous subgenome types. The prevalent subgenome types tended to change within several years.

Analysis with restriction endonucleases recognizing 4- or 5-base-pair sequences of human adenovirus type 3 isolated from ocular diseases in Sapporo, Japan

A total of 49 adenovirus type 3 (Ad3) strains from patients with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis at an eye clinic in Sapporo, Japan, from 1983 to 1986 were classified into either genome type Ad3f (26 strains) or Ad3g (23 strains). By the use of Hinf1 and TaqI restriction endonucleases, they were classified into 11 and 3 subgenome types, respectively. During this observation period, two epidemics of Ad3 infection relating to epidemic keratoconjunctivitis occurred. The prevalent Ad3g strains isolated during the epidemic in 1983 belonged to a single subgenome type. However, in the course of the Ad3f epidemic in 1986, alteration of one subgenome type of the prevalent strain to a different subgenome type which was presumed to be a derivative of the former was observed. In the years in which only a few Ad3 strains were isolated, such Ad3f strains were classified into different subgenome types. However, all Ad3g strains except two belonged to the same subgenome type.

Genome typing of adenovirus strains isolated from conjunctivitis in Japan, Australia, and the Philippines

DNA restriction endonuclease analysis for genome typing of adenovirus (Ad) DNA was carried out on a total of 65 Ad isolates including serotypes Ad4, Ad7, Ad8, Ad11, Ad19, and Ad37 from patients with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and acute conjunctivitis obtained in Japan from 1982 to 1986, Australia from 1973 to 1986, and the Philippines in 1984. All 4 isolates of Ad7 in Australia were Ad7b. Four of 6 Ad11 isolates obtained in Japan were typed as Ad11 prototype (Ad11p), and the remaining were identified to be new genome types, designated tentatively as Ad11c and Ad11d. An isolate of Ad11 obtained in Australia was typed as Ad11c. Nine Ad8 isolates in Australia and in the Philippines were typed as Ad8p, but 11 Ad8 isolates in Japan were Ad8b. Thirteen Ad19 isolates were identified as Ad19a. All 3 isolates of Ad37 in Japan and three isolates in Australia before 1982 were typed as Ad37p, however, 5 isolates in Australia after 1983 were identified as a new genome type, designated as Ad37d. In Japan, 10 isolates of Ad4 were identified as Ad4a.
