Comparison of methods in oral health education from the perspective of adolescents

PURPOSE

To investigate whether teenagers' knowledge about oral health is influenced by educational methods and to verify the most effective method according to their perception.

METHODS

The study was performed in Araçatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil, with 127 teenagers from a vocational school. It was realised in 3 steps: 1. An evaluation of knowledge about oral health using a self-applied questionnaire. 2. An application of educational methods, where the students were divided into two groups (A and B). Group A participated in three educational activities that involved lectures, individual demonstration, and participatory activity. Group B was divided into three subgroups (B1, B2, B3) and each of them participated in only one of the methods. 3. The acquired knowledge was evaluated. Group A created a focus group to give their opinion about strategies.

RESULTS

With regards to knowledge after the application of the different methods in all groups, there was a statistically significant difference concerning periodontitis, gingivitis and herpes. In group A, after the three activities, and in group B2 after the individual demonstration, an association was found between 'healthy teeth' and 'general health' (P = 0.004 and P = 0.022, respectively). After the individual demonstration, an association was shown between variables of acquired knowledge about 'harmful diet' and 'dental caries' (P = 0.002) as well as 'good diet' and 'prevention of oral diseases' (P = 0.032). The favourite method was individual demonstration, due to the contact with educational materials, followed by participatory activity because it encouraged learning in a more dynamic way.

CONCLUSION

Educational methods influenced knowledge about oral health, with individual demonstration proving to be the most effective method for acquiring knowledge. In the adolescents' view, the participatory activity was the preferred method.

Perception and attitude about systemic health and periodontal disease among dentistry undergraduates

PURPOSE

To evaluate the perceptions held by dentistry undergraduates about the relationship between general health and periodontal disease. In addition, student knowledge about treatment of patients with systemic disorders was also examined.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Participants were all undergraduates in the last year of dental school from three different universities (N = 253). Inclusion criteria were students enrolled in their last year of the dental curriculum and who agreed to participate in the research. After the participants filled out a structured questionnaire, the results were analysed using Epi Info 3.5.1 software and the chi-square, Friedman and Wilcoxon tests.

RESULTS

The majority of participants recognised the relationship between periodontal and cardiac disease and diabetes mellitus. However, only half of the participants were aware of the relationship between periodontal disease and stroke (50.5%). In relation to caring for patients with systemic diseases, 61.4% of students surveyed did not know the blood glucose level that characterises a hypoglycemic status. The majority of participants (61.8%) stated the importance of evaluating vital signs prior to dental treatment. However, only 13.3% of the participants included temperature and respiratory rate as vital signs.

CONCLUSION

The perception and attitude of undergraduates about the items on the questionnaire were deficient. Thus, a more holistic view of the patient is warranted within dental education, promoting health and quality of life.

Prevalence of malocclusion and related oral habits in 5- to 6-year-old children

PURPOSE

To verify the prevalence of malocclusion and the influence of harmful oral habits on deciduous dentition in 5- and 6-year-old children enrolled in Brazilian public elementary schools during 2010.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Exams were conducted in 1385 children from 56 Brazilian elementary schools using the method recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for epidemiological surveys on oral health. Information about the type of arch, social and economic data and harmful oral habits of the children were collected through a structured questionnaire.

RESULTS

In relation to canine occlusion, a high prevalence of Class I (74.5%), followed by Class II (19.4%), was found. Among all participants, 22% showed high overjet, 7.8% showed edge-to-edge occlusion and 2.3% showed anterior crossbite. In relation to overbite, 13.2% had short overbite, 14.3% open bite and 16.8% high overbite. The presence of posterior crossbite occurred in 14.6% of children. Maxillae predominantly exhibited the type I arch (67.9%) and mandibles predominantly exhibited type II (51.7%). In relation to harmful oral habits, 43.4% used a pacifier, 84.8% used a bottle and finger sucking was reported by 17.2%.

CONCLUSION

There was a high prevalence of malocclusion associated with oral habits harmful to deciduous dentition.
