Subwavelength Diffractive Optical Elements for Generation of Terahertz Coherent Beams with Pre-Given Polarization State

Coherent terahertz beams with radial polarization of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd orders have been generated with the use of silicon subwavelength diffractive optical elements (DOEs). Silicon elements were fabricated by a technology similar to the technology used before for the fabrication of DOEs forming laser terahertz beams with pre-given mode content. The beam of the terahertz Novosibirsk Free Electron Laser was used as the illuminating beam. The experimental results are in good agreement with the results of the computer simulation.

Three-Dimensional Incoherent Imaging Using Spiral Rotating Point Spread Functions Created by Double-Helix Beams [Invited]

In recent years, there has been a significant transformation in the field of incoherent imaging with new possibilities of compressing three-dimensional (3D) information into a two-dimensional intensity distribution without two-beam interference (TBI). Most incoherent 3D imagers without TBI are based on scattering by a random phase mask exhibiting sharp autocorrelation and low cross-correlation along the depth axis. Consequently, during reconstruction, high lateral and axial resolutions are obtained. Scattering based-Imaging requires a wasteful photon budget and is therefore precluded in many power-sensitive applications. This study develops a proof-of-concept 3D incoherent imaging method using a rotating point spread function termed 3D Incoherent Imaging with Spiral Beams (3DI²SB). The rotation speed of the point spread function (PSF) with displacement and the orbital angular momentum has been theoretically analyzed. The imaging characteristics of 3DI²SB were compared with a direct imaging system using a diffractive lens, and the proposed system exhibited a higher focal depth than the direct imaging system. Different computational reconstruction methods such as the Lucy-Richardson algorithm (LRA), non-linear reconstruction (NLR), and the Lucy-Richardson-Rosen algorithm (LRRA) were compared. While LRRA performed better than both LRA and NLR for an ideal case, NLR performed better than both under real experimental conditions. Both single plane imaging, as well as synthetic 3D imaging, were demonstrated. We believe that the proposed approach might cause a paradigm shift in the current state-of-the-art incoherent imaging, fluorescence microscopy, and astronomical imaging.

Deep Subwavelength Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures on Silicon as a Novel Multifunctional Biosensing Platform

Strong light localization inside the nanoscale gaps provides remarkable opportunities for creation of various medical and biosensing platforms stimulating an active search for inexpensive and easily scalable fabrication at a sub-100 nm resolution. In this paper, self-organized laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) with the shortest ever reported periodicity of 70 ± 10 nm were directly imprinted on the crystalline Si wafer upon its direct femtosecond-laser ablation in isopropanol. Appearance of such a nanoscale morphology was explained by the formation of a periodic topography on the surface of photoexcited Si driven by interference phenomena as well as subsequent down-scaling of the imprinted grating period via Rayleigh-Taylor hydrodynamic instability. The produced deep subwavelength LIPSSs demonstrate strong anisotropic anti-reflection performance, ensuring efficient delivery of the incident far-field radiation to the electromagnetic "hot spots" localized in the Si nanogaps. This allows realization of various optical biosensing platforms operating via strong interactions of quantum emitters with nanoscale light fields. The demonstrated 80-fold enhancement of spontaneous emission from the attached nanolayer of organic dye molecules and in situ optical tracing of catalytic molecular transformations substantiate bare and metal-capped deep subwavelength Si LIPSSs as a promising inexpensive multifunctional biosensing platform.

Two-step maskless fabrication of compound fork-shaped gratings in nanomultilayer structures based on chalcogenide glasses

We demonstrate an easy two-step maskless method for the fabrication of so-called compound fork-shaped gratings in nanomultilayer structures (NMLSs) based on chalcogenide glasses. Such elements allow one to generate different configurations of optical vortex (OV) beams with given topological charges (TCs). The used NMLS is particularly interesting because it enables one to realize the direct one-step writing of the surface relief without selective etching. We show that it is possible to control TCs of the generated OV beam arrays, their locations, and intensity. The proposed approach can easily be adapted to the fabrication of compound diffractive gratings performing the desired one- and two-dimensional generation and splitting of other structured laser beams.

Silicon microprotrusions with tailored chirality enabled by direct femtosecond laser ablation

Here, we report on formation of nanoprotrusions on the surface of a bulk crystalline silicon wafer under femtosecond-laser ablation with a donut-shaped laser beam. By breaking circular symmetry of the irradiating donut-shaped fs-pulse beam, a switch in geometry of the formed surface nanoprotrusions from regular to chiral was demonstrated. The chirality of the obtained Si nanostructures was promoted with an asymmetry degree of the laser beam. An uneven helical flow of laser-melted Si caused by asymmetry of the initial intensity and temperature pattern on the laser-irradiated Si surface explains this phenomenon. Chirality of the formed protrusions was confirmed by visualizing cross-sectional cuts produced by focused ion beam milling as well as Raman activity of these structures probed by circularly polarized light with opposite handedness. Our results open a pathway towards easy-to-implement inexpensive fabrication of chiral all-dielectric nanostructures for advanced nanophotonic applications and sensing of chiral molecules.

Metasurfaces with continuous ridges for inverse energy flux generation

In this study, we propose a new approach to construct metasurfaces for the generation of inverse energy flux near the optical axis. We derive new equations intended to create continuous subwavelength relief for transformation of a linearly polarized input field into a radially polarized beam with an arbitrary order. Proposed metasurfaces combine the polarization converter as subwavelength gratings with a varying period and the focusing element as additional structure. Such a combination increases polarization conversion efficiency and decreases the number of optical elements in an arrangement. Numerical simulations of the proposed metasurfaces, based on the finite element method, show that the higher-order polarization conversion provides the greater integrated inverse energy flux. Moreover, the shape of the inverse flux area achieved with the higher-order metasurface is annular and has bigger force area.

Zero-orbital-angular-momentum laser printing of chiral nanoneedles

Laser irradiation of various materials including metals, polymers, and semiconductors with vortex beams was previously shown to "twist" transiently molten matter providing the direct easy-to-implement way to obtain chiral surface relief. Specifically for metals, this effect was attributed to transfer of an orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by a vortex beam. In this Letter, we report the formation of twisted metallic nanoneedles on surfaces of silver and gold films under their irradiation by a zero-OAM laser beam with a spiral-shaped intensity distribution. Our comparative experiments clearly demonstrate, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, that the formation of the chiral nanoneedles on the noble-metal films is mainly governed by the temperature-gradient-induced chiral thermocapillary mass transfer, rather than by OAM-driven rotation of the molten matter.

Focused, evanescent, hollow, and collimated beams formed by microaxicons with different conical angles

Diffraction patterns formed by axicons with different tip (vertex) angles are analytically and numerically investigated. Results show that the axicon (or tapered dielectric probe) can form an extended axial light beam, a compact evanescent field, a hollow beam, and a collimated beam, depending on the vertex angle. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional models of a tapered dielectric probe show that, with small changes to the vertex angle, light transmitted by the probe is scattered rather than focused, and vice versa. Angle meanings corresponded to boundary transitions have a quantum character and densify as the angle approaches zero. These features should be taken into consideration when manufacturing microaxicons intended for various applications.

Direct laser printing of chiral plasmonic nanojets by vortex beams

Donut-shaped laser radiation, carrying orbital angular momentum, namely optical vortex, was recently shown to provide vectorial mass transfer, twisting transiently molten material and producing chiral micro-scale structures on surfaces of different bulk materials upon their resolidification. In this paper, we show that at high-NA focusing nanosecond laser vortices can produce chiral nanoneedles (nanojets) of variable size on thin films of such plasmonic materials, as silver and gold films, covering thermally insulating substrates. Main geometric parameters of the produced chiral nanojets, such as height and aspect ratio, were shown to be tunable in a wide range by varying metal film thickness, supporting substrates, and the optical size of the vortex beam. Donut-shaped vortex nanosecond laser pulses, carrying two vortices with opposite handedness, were demonstrated to produce two chiral nanojets twisted in opposite directions. These results suggest optical interference of the incident and reflected laser beams as a source of complex surface intensity distributions in metal films, possessing spiral components and driving both center-symmetric and spiral thermocapillary melt flows to yield in frozen nanoneedles with their pre-determined spiral nanocarving.

On-Fly Femtosecond-Laser Fabrication of Self-Organized Plasmonic Nanotextures for Chemo- and Biosensing Applications

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced photoluminescence (SEPL) are emerging as versatile widespread methods for biological, chemical, and physical characterization in close proximity of nanostructured surfaces of plasmonic materials. Meanwhile, single-step, facile, cheap, and green technologies for large-scale fabrication of efficient SERS or SEPL substrates, routinely demonstrating both broad plasmonic response and high enhancement characteristics, are still missing. In this research, single-pulse spallative micron-size craters in a thick Ag film with their internal nanotexture in the form of nanosized tips are for the first time shown to demonstrate strong polarization-dependent enhancement of SEPL and SERS responses from a nanometer-thick covering Rhodamine 6G layer with average enhancement factors of 40 and 2 × 10(6), respectively. Additionally, the first detailed experimental study is reported for physical processes, underlying the formation mechanisms of ablative nanotextures on such "thick" metal films. Such mechanisms demonstrate a complex "hybrid" fluence-dependent ablation character-appearance of spallative craters, typical for bulk material, at low fluences and formation of upright standing nanotips (frozen nanojets), usually associated with thin-film ablation, in the crater centers at higher fluences. Moreover, special emphasis was made on the possibility to reshape the nanotopography of such spallative craters through multipulse laser-induced merging of their small nanotips into larger ones. The presented approach holds promise to be one of the cheapest and easiest-to-implement ways to mass-fabricate various efficient spallation-nanotextured single-element plasmonic substrates for routine chemo- and biosensing, using MHz-repetition-rate femtosecond fiber laser sources with multiplexed laser-beams.

Diffractive optical elements for the formation of "light bottle" intensity distributions

Application of the two-photon polymerization (2PP) technique for the fabrication of binary radial diffractive optical elements (DOEs) to form a bottle-like intensity distribution, or "light bottle," is studied. Computer modeling and fabrication of a binary DOE for the formation of the desired light distributions are realized. The results of scanning electron microscopy analysis of the diffractive relief produced by the 2PP technique and an investigation of the optical properties of the fabricated elements are presented.
