Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the prediction of mortality by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and screening blood pressure measurements in a general population. DESIGN A prospective cohort study. PATIENTS AND METHODS We obtained blood pressure data for 1542 subjects (565 men and 977 women) aged > or = 40 years who were followed up for up to 8.1 years (mean 5.1 years). Subjects were subdivided into five groups according to their ambulatory and screening blood pressure levels. The prognostic significance of blood pressure for mortality was examined by the Cox proportional hazards regression model. RESULTS The association between blood pressure level and mortality was more distinctive for the ambulatory blood pressure than it was for the screening blood pressure. The risk of cardiovascular mortality increased significantly for the highest quintiles of 24 h ambulatory blood pressure, whereas there was no significant association between the screening blood pressure and the cardiovascular mortality. When both 24 h and screening blood pressure values were included in the Cox model, only the systolic ambulatory blood pressure was related significantly to the increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. CONCLUSIONS The ambulatory blood pressure had a stronger predictive power for mortality than did the screening blood pressure. This appears to have been the first study of the prognostic significance of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring versus screening blood pressure measurements in a general population.

Abstract
Intracellular recordings were made from neurons of the red nucleus (RN) in cats where the cerebellar cortical effects were removed by chronic ablation of the intermediate part of the anterior lobe of the cerebellum. A prolonged depolarization could be elicited by stimulating the nucleus interpositus (IP) of the cerebellum, nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis (NRTP) and the nucleus reticularis paramedianus (PMRN). This prolonged depolarization was abolished after cooling the inferior and middle cerebellar peduncles and persisted after ablation of the cerebral sensorimotor cortex. The prolonged depolarization was also recorded intracellularly from IP neurons. It was concluded that the prolonged depolarization set up in RN neurons is due to the repetitive discharges of IP neurons which produces tonic bombardment onto RN cells. The mechanisms of the repetitive discharges of IP neurons are considered to be due to impulse reverberation via the IP. The dynamic properties of the reverberating circuits were characterized by regenerative behavior. Above and below threshold, there were two states, the excited state where many constituent neurons were active, and the resting state where all neurons were inactive. It was found that cats with chronically stimulated cerebral peduncle (CP), and tested in an acute experiment, showed sometimes effective for inducing the prolonged depolarization and repetitive discharges of RN neurons by stimulation of IP. The prolonged depolarization thus produced could be reversibly abolished by cooling the middle and inferior cerebellar peduncles. The possible constituent neurons of the reverberating circuits were investigated in light of previous physiological investigations of stimulating the NRTP, PMRN, nucleus reticularis lateralis (LRN), nucleus olivaris inferior (IO) and recording EPSPs in RN cells. The RN cells receive axon reflex activation from NRTP and PMRN, and disynaptic excitation from NRTP, PMRN, LRN and IO. Based on these and other available data, the components of the cerebello-precerebellar reverberating circuits are discussed.

Abstract
To examine the impact of health-related lifestyle upon medical care utilization and its costs, we conducted a cohort study among all National Health Insurance beneficiaries aged from 40 to 79 years living in the catchment area of Ohsaki Public Health Center, Miyagi, Japan. The baseline survey, using self-completed questionnaire regarding health-related lifestyle, was conducted between October and December 1994. Out of 54,996 eligible subjects, 52,029 (94.6%) responded and formed the cohort under study. Medical care utilization (number of outpatient visits and days of inpatient care) and the costs for each subject have been obtained from National Health Insurance Claim History files since January 1995. The baseline characteristics of health-related lifestyle and medical history at the study subjects were consistent with those at our another cohort subjects (so-called Miyagi cohort study; N = 47,605), which included all the residents aged from 40 to 64 years at 14 municipalities in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan conducted in 1990. The medical costs per capita in this cohort was quite compatible with the national average. This prospective cohort study would quantitatively demonstrate the economic impact of health-related lifestyle, thus would lead us to better provision of cost-effective preventive health services.

Abstract
Interleukin-31 receptor A (IL-31RA) is a newly identified type I cytokine receptor, that is related to gp130, the common receptor of the interleukin (IL) -6 family cytokines. Recent studies have shown that IL-31RA forms a functional receptor complex for IL-31 together with the beta subunit of oncostatin M receptor (OSMRbeta). However, little is known about the target cells of IL-31 because it remains unclear which types of cells express IL-31RA. In our previous reports, we demonstrated that OSMRbeta is expressed in a subset of small-sized nociceptive neurons of adult dorsal root ganglia (DRGs). In the present study, we investigated the IL-31RA expression in the adult and developing DRGs. From a northern blot analysis and in situ hybridization histochemistry, IL-31RA mRNA was found to be expressed in the adult DRGs. According to reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, IL-31RA mRNA was detected in the DRGs and trigeminal ganglia, while no expression of IL-31RA mRNA was observed in the CNS. Double immunofluorescence staining revealed IL-31RA to be expressed in a subset of small-sized neurons, all of which colocalized with OSMRbeta. In addition, the expression of IL-31 RA was detected in afferent fibers in the spinal cord and the dermis of the skin. We also found that the developmental expression pattern of IL-31RA was different from that of OSMRbeta; IL31RA-positive neurons in DRGs first appeared at postnatal day (PN) 10 and reached the adult level at PN14, whereas OSMRbeta-positive neurons were observed at PN0 for the first time. We previously demonstrated OSMRbeta-expressing neurons to decrease, however, they were not found to disappear in oncostatin M (OSM) -deficient mice. These findings suggest that IL-31 and OSM may thus have redundant functions in the development of OSMRbeta-expressing neurons.

Abstract
Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is now generally accepted as an endogenous pyrogenic mediator of fever induction. IL-1 induces fever by means of activation of arachidonate metabolism in the brain. However, whether circulating IL-1 enters the brain or not, further, the question of where is the action site of circulating IL-1 on the brain, have not been clearly demonstrated. In the present study, to investigate the site of action of circulating IL-1 on the brain, recombinant rabbit interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) was labeled with colloidal gold, injected into the carotid artery of anesthetized rabbits and traced in the brain tissue by means of electron microscopy. Dose-dependent increase in colonic temperature was induced by intravenous injection of used IL-1 in rabbits, while heated IL-1 beta lost the pyrogenicity. Injection of solution of colloidal gold per se did not affect the colonic temperature of afebrile conscious rabbits. However, the IL-1/gold conjugates induced fever; IL-1 beta retained its pyrogenic potency even after labeling with gold. By electron microscopy, the IL-1/gold conjugates were observed on the surface and in the vesicle of endothelial cells of the capillary in the region of the anteroventral third ventricle. This implies that circulating IL-1 acts, as the initial step to induce fever, on the endothelium in that region.

Abstract
We have synthesized and evaluated a series of hybrids, denoted 22--27, for in vitro cytotoxic activity against a variety of cancer cell lines. These hybrids represent a molecular combination of polypyrrole minor groove binders structurally related to the natural antitumor agent distamycin A and two pyrazole analogues of the left-hand segment called cyclopropylpyrroloindole (CPI) of the potent antitumor antibiotic (+)-CC-1065. These novel water-soluble hybrids have been designed to enhance the minor groove binding ability of alkylating units 20 and 21, which should increase their clinical appeal by overcoming the administration problems of (+)-CC-1065 derivatives. The DNA alkylating and cytotoxic activities against several tumor cell lines are reported and discussed in terms of their structural differences in relation to both the number of N-methyl pyrrole rings and the type of the alkylating unit tethered to the oligopeptidic frame. It may be noted that, in general, and especially for 22--24, the cytotoxicity of the hybrids was much greater than that of the alkylating units alone. In only one case, compound 27, did the hybrid have cytotoxic activity comparable to that of the alkylating unit alone against FM3A/0 cells. The broadest spectrum of activity and greatest potency was shown by the hybrid 24, in which the alkylating unit 20 and the deformyl distamycin A are tethered by 1-methyl 2,5-dicarbonyl pyrazole, with IC(50) values for the different tumor cell lines ranging from 7 to 71 nM. For compounds 22--24, the increase of the length of the pseudopeptidic moiety from one to three N-methylpyrrole residues led to an increased cytotoxicity. Among the hybrids tested for their inhibitory effects on the proliferation of murine L1210 leukemia cell line, compound 24 proved to be the most active (IC(50) = 7.4 nM), and in the sequencing gel experiments, it showed the strongest and most highly sequence-specific DNA alkylation activity. For compounds 22-24, the sequence specificity of DNA alkylation appears to be affected by the modification of the number of pyrrole rings, and the correlation between cytotoxicity and alkylation pattern suggests that 24 exerts its cytotoxicity through DNA sequence-specific alkylation of the third adenine located in the sequence 5'-ACAAAAATCG-3'. The two other hybrids 22 and 23 were slightly less active for tumor cell proliferation, with IC(50) values of 58 and 19 nM, respectively. With only one exception, none of the compounds was endowed with antiviral activity at subtoxic concentrations. Compound 24 inhibited the effect of vaccinia virus at a concentration that was significantly lower than its minimum cytotoxic concentration for the E(6)SM host cells. These compounds gave distinct patterns of alkylation in AT-rich sequences, indicating that minor structural changes produced marked alterations in sequence selectivity.

Abstract
Time-series data of swimming speed and dive depth were recorded in six female loggerhead turtles Caretta caretta during the internesting period. The dive profiles of all animals indicated that they stayed at particular depths without swimming and that these depths were correlated with dive duration. These results support the hypothesis that lung air is used to achieve neutral buoyancy in the loggerhead turtle. To test this hypothesis, female turtles were equipped with lead weights and time/depth recorders. The residence depth of the turtles increased when their specific gravity was artificially decreased. This indicates that they control depth rather than lung volume, suggesting that the residence depth of loggerhead turtles during the internesting period is not determined actively. They presumably remain at a particular depth exclusively to save energy for egg maturation during the internesting period. Lung volume was estimated from the change in depth of weighted animals to be 50–150 ml kg(−1). The resulting residence depth of all turtles was within the range at which they maintained the neutral buoyancy.

Abstract
Nymphs of hemimetabolous insects such as cockroaches and crickets exhibit a remarkable capacity for regenerating complex structures from damaged legs. Until recent years, however, approaches to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the leg regeneration process have been lacking. Taking the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus as a model, we found that a phenotype related to regeneration frequently appears during leg regeneration, even though no phenotype is induced by RNA interference (RNAi) in the cricket nymph, designated as regeneration-dependent RNAi. Since then, we have investigated the functions of various genes encoding signaling factors and cellular adhesion proteins like Fat and Dachsous during leg regeneration. In this review, we summarize the classical knowledge about insect leg regeneration and introduce recent advances concerning the signaling cascades required for regenerating a leg. Our results provide clues to the mechanisms of regeneration which are relevant to vertebrate systems.

Abstract
Wandering spleen is an uncommon condition, showing a splenic hypermobility that results from laxity or maldevelopment of its suspensory ligament. This condition results in constant danger of splenic torsion and infarction. Wandering spleen was diagnosed in a 2-year-old girl who complained of intermittent abdominal pain, and viability of the spleen was confirmed by doppler ultrasound scan. Elective laparoscopic splenopexy was performed by anchoring the spleen wrapped in absorbable mesh. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of laparoscopic splenopexy for wandering spleen. The authors believe that this approach is a safe and effective procedure for wandering spleen with the advantage of minimally invasive surgery.

Abstract
Cortical units were sought that discharged in temporal correlation with spontaneously occurring lens accommodation in the area surrounding the middle suprasylvian sulcus, between the stereotaxic coordinates A8.0 and P1.0, while monitoring lens accommodation by using an infrared optometer. Units were tentatively identified as accommodation related if their discharges were modulated before the onset times of lens accommodation. Forty-eight accommodation-related units were found. Modulation of discharges preceded the onset times of accommodation by 360 ms on the average. Most (95%) of these units were related to the increase in the refractive power of the lens. Antidromic activation from the dorsal midbrain was tested in 26 of 48 accommodation-related units. Fourteen (67%) units were antidromically activated from the superior colliculus and/or the pretectum. Nine (64%) of them were also activated antidromically from the lateral posterior nucleus of the thalamus. The location of these units were confirmed by histological reconstruction. They were found in the posterior medial and posterior lateral lateral suprasylvian (PMLS and PLLS) areas and in the transitional zone of PMLS to the suprasylvian gyrus, between stereotaxic coordinates A7.0 and A1.5.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To improve the postoperative results of limited resection for small lung cancer, we have developed a new operative method, pulmonary artery-guided segmentectomy. This resection begins with identification of the pulmonary arterial branches involved in the tumor, then the pulmonary tissue is divided along the pulmonary arteries (i.e. guided by pulmonary arteries) from the hilum toward the periphery by electrocautery. The advantages of this method include the facilitation of securing adequate margin from the tumor, and the feasibility of intralobar lymph node dissection during operation. To examine the efficacy of the new method of segmental resection, we retrospectively reviewed 74 cases of T1N0M0 disease who underwent the pulmonary artery-guided segmentectomy. METHODS From 1993 to 2000, 74 patients with pathological T1N0M0 lung cancer were treated by the pulmonary artery-guided segmentectomy. Forty-one patients (55.4%) who underwent the segmentectomy had been considered suitable candidates for lobectomy (intentional resection group). The other 33 patients (44.6%) were considered poor candidates for lobectomy because of poor cardiopulmonary reserve (compromised resection group). RESULTS The overall survival rate at 5 years was 82.0%. The 5-year survivals in the intentional and the compromised resection groups were 81.6 and 77.6%, respectively, and no significant differences were detected between the groups. According to tumor size, the 5-year survival rate for patients with tumors of 20 mm or smaller (92.9%, n=53) was higher than that for the patients with tumors of 21-30 mm (63.0%, n=21), but the difference did not reach statistical significance. Median follow-up time of 27.0 months revealed eight locoregional recurrences and four deaths due to lung cancer. Sixty-three patients (85.1%) are alive with no evidence of disease, and six patients (8.1%) are alive with recurrent disease. Locoregional recurrences occurred in one of 53 patients (1.9%) with tumors 20 mm or smaller and in seven of 21 patients (33.3%) with tumors 21-30 mm, the difference being statistically significant (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS Our intermediate results demonstrated that the new pulmonary artery-guided segmentectomy could be an alternative method for selected patients with small lung cancer, particularly with tumors 20 mm or smaller in diameter.

Abstract
The nuclear transcription factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) plays an important role in the development and progression of cancers. However, the mechanism by which cancer cells in the head and neck region acquire high NF-kappaB activity has not yet been clarified. In this study, we examined the NF-kappaB binding activity and the expression of the signal-transduction-related proteins of NF-kappaB in head and neck carcinoma cell lines. These cancer cells showed significantly higher NF-kappaB binding activity than normal oral epithelial and salivary gland cells. We also demonstrated the increased phosphorylation and degradation of IkappaB-alpha protein in cancer cells. Thus, enhanced NF-kappaB activity in cancer cells is attributable to the rapid phosphorylation and degradation of IkappaB-alpha protein. To further elucidate the mechanism involved in this phenomenon, we analyzed both the expression levels of upstream kinases (IkappaB kinase- (IKK-) alpha, IKK-beta, IKK-gamma, and NF-kappaB-inducing kinase (NIK)) and the IKK activity in cells. Although there was no significant difference in the expression levels of NIK, IKK-beta, or IKK-gamma in cancer cell lines compared to those in normal cells, increased expression of IKK-alpha protein was observed in cancer cells. In addition, IKK activity was significantly augmented in cancer cells as compared to normal cells. Thus, our results suggest that enhanced NF-kappaB activity in head and neck cancer cells may be due to the augmentation of IKK activity.

Abstract
From the soybean cDNA library, we isolated and analyzed the chlH gene encoding a subunit of Mg-chelatase. The subunit was a polypeptide of 1,383 amino acids with a molecular mass of 153,491 Da, which shared 90% identity with the olive gene from Antirrhinum majus. The regulation of the expression of chlH was investigated in photomix-otrophic soybean suspension cells (SB-P). The expression was light-inducible, and the induction was more rapid than those of chlI and cab2. Furthermore, the levels of the transcripts and products of chlH appeared to be regulated by a circadian oscillation. The subchloroplastic localization of ChlH was investigated by immunoblot analyses with antiserum against recombinant ChlH. Depending on the concentration of Mg2+ in the lysis buffer, the localization of ChlH protein migrated between the stroma and the envelope membrane; ChlH was localized on the envelope membrane, a major site of chlorophyll biosynthesis, when the Mg2+ concentration of the lysis buffer was high (above 5 mM). These results indicated that the activity of Mg-chelatase was regulated by modulation of the expression and subchloroplastic localization of ChlH protein.

Abstract
Laparoscopic-assisted proximal gastrectomy was performed in two Japanese patients with early gastric carcinomas located in the gastric cardia. The lower esophagus and upper stomach was divided under the pneumoperitoneum and resected via a minilaparotomy through an incision, 5 cm long, made in the epigastric area. The distal esophagus was anastomosed to a gastric tube made by resecting the lesser curvature of the stomach with a linear auto-stapler. Both patients recovered quickly without any postoperative complications, such as esophagitis, developing during follow-up periods of 3 and 6 months, respectively. Thus, we conclude that laparoscopic-assisted proximal gastrectomy and reconstruction with a gastric tube may be an effective method of treatment for patients with early gastric carcinomas located in the upper stomach in this era of minimally invasive surgery.

Abstract
Previous allelotyping studies on colorectal carcinoma suggest that loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on chromosome 14q may be a common genetic alteration in this tumor type. The purpose of this study was to determine precise frequency of LOH at 14q32 region in colorectal carcinomas and to define a minimal region of LOH. LOH at 14q32 in 66 primary colorectal carcinomas were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-based deletion mapping using six highly polymorphic microsatellites. The average rate of informative data was 68.2% in all cases of colorectal carcinoma analyzed. The average rate of LOH at 14q32 was 44.1%, with the highest frequency of 50.0% at D14S267 locus in the informative cases. The minimal region of LOH was defined by markers D14S65 and D14S250 at 14q32. The present data provide useful information for the isolation of tumor suppressor genes from this region.

Abstract
Living-donor lobar lung transplantation (LDLLT) is one of the final options for saving patients with pulmonary complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). We retrospectively investigated 19 patients who had undergone LDLLT after HSCT in Japan. Eight patients underwent LDLLT after HSCT in which one of the donors was the same living donor as in HSCT (SD group), while 11 received LDLLT from relatives who were not the HSCT donors (non-SD group). In the SD group, three patients underwent single LDLLT. The 5-year survival rate was 100% and 58% in the SD and non-SD groups, respectively. In the SD group, postoperative immunosuppression was significantly lower than in the non-SD group. Two patients died of infection and one died of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) in the non-SD group, while only one patient died of PTLD 7 years after LDLLT in the SD group. Hematologic malignancy relapsed in two patients in the non-SD group. For the three single LDLLTs in the SD group, immunosuppression was carefully tapered. In our study, LDLLT involving the same donor as for HSCT appeared to have advantages related to lower immunosuppression compared to LDLLT from relatives who were not the HSCT donors.

Abstract
Prevention of ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is crucial for successful lung transplantation. We investigated whether a nitric oxide donor, nitroglycerin (NTG), could suppress the oxidative stress of IR injury and improve pulmonary function after reperfusion in an ex vivo rat lung perfusion model. In Fresh group of animals, the lungs were flushed with perfusate, followed immediately by reperfusion, and no lung injury was observed. In NTG- and NTG+ groups of animals, the lungs were flushed with perfusate alone or perfusate containing NTG, respectively. Harvested lung and heart blocks from these latter two groups were immersed in the corresponding perfusate at 4 degrees C for 15 h, and were then reperfused for 60 min. Reperfusion induced pulmonary edema in the NTG- group, but not in the NTG+ group. Shunt fractions in NTG+ group were significantly lower than in the NTG- group throughout reperfusion. NTG had no effect on pulmonary arterial pressure or myeloperoxidase activity. In contrast, oxidative DNA damage assessed immunohistochemically with a monoclonal antibody against 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was significantly increased in the NTG- group, in the order alveolar epithelium > pulmonary endothelium > bronchial epithelium. NTG treatment significantly decreased staining with the anti-8-OHdG antibody in all three areas of tissue. Therefore, administration of NTG attenuates the oxidative stress of IR injury, and may improve pulmonary function after reperfusion.

Abstract
Single units were sought in the medial midbrain, whereas lens accommodation of the eye was monitored by using an infrared high-speed optometer. Nineteen of 135 units isolated were identified as accommodation-related units by two criteria: 1) they discharged in synchrony with spontaneously occurring accommodation, and b) the units were driven by stimulating the interpositus nucleus of the cerebellum. In eight other experiments, units were sought that were antidromically activated by stimulating parasympathetic preganglionic fibers to the ciliary ganglion. Eleven of 46 antidromically activated units were identified as accommodation-related units (accommodation-related oculomotor units). Accommodation-related oculomotor units were found in the medial midbrain within 1 mm of the midline. The majority of them were located lateral and dorsal to the Edinger-Westphal nucleus.

Abstract
Two cases of pulmonary plasma cell granuloma that progressed after respiratory infectious disease are described. The men, 48 and 32 years old, were admitted to the hospital with blood-streaked sputum and mass or nodular shadow on chest radiograph. Close examination revealed that these tumors were plasma cell granulomas, which are known as postinflammatory pseudotumors. Biopsy specimens, obtained by way of transbronchial biopsy, demonstrated proliferation of mature plasma cells and infiltration of lymphocytes supported by granulation tissue, and there was no evidence of malignancy or tuberculosis. Although surgery is common in the treatment of pulmonary plasma cell granuloma, some cases relapse or invade the mediastinum. Therefore, we decided to treat these patients with prednisolone, 30 mg/d, an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent. Two or 4 weeks later, these tumors disappeared completely and they have never recurred. As middle-dosage corticosteroid therapy is not cytotoxic, it is useful for the treatment of pulmonary plasma cell granuloma, especially in multifocal, unresectable, and/or relapsing cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS An indocyanine green derivative (ICG-sulfo-OSu) that can be used as an infrared fluorescent labeling substance suitable for detecting microlesions with an infrared fluorescence endoscope has been developed. The aims of the present study were to develop an infrared fluorescence endoscope and to demonstrate its usefulness in detecting cancerous tissue using an antibody coupled with ICG-sulfo-OSu. MATERIALS AND METHODS ICG-sulfo-OSu-labeled mouse anti-human carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) antibody and an infrared fluorescence endoscope were used in this study. Biopsy specimens of gastric cancer were stained with anti-CEA antibody using the avidin-biotinylated peroxidase complex method. The positive specimens used for the infrared imaging analysis were freshly resected stomachs from three patients. RESULTS Treatment of freshly resected stomach specimens with ICG-sulfo-OSu-labeled-anti-CEA antibody complex resulted in positive staining of the tumor sites on infrared fluorescence endoscopy, and the infrared fluorescent images correlated well with the tumor sites. CONCLUSIONS An anti-CEA antibody with affinity for cancerous lesions and labeled with ICG-sulfo-OSu can therefore be imaged using this infrared fluorescence endoscope. Specific antibodies tagged with ICG-sulfo-OSu can label cancer cells and can generate a strong enough fluorescent signal to detect small cancers when examined with an infrared fluorescence endoscope.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the effect of inhaled beta 2 adrenergic agonists on the sensitivity of airway cough receptors, the effect of inhaled procaterol on cough induced by aerosolised capsaicin, a stimulant of C fibres, was studied in patients with asthma or chronic bronchitis and in normal subjects. METHOD Eleven patients with asthma and 10 with chronic bronchitis and 14 normal subjects participated. Increasing concentrations of capsaicin solution were inhaled for 15 seconds by tidal breathing through the mouth at one minute intervals until five or more coughs were elicited, before and 30 minutes after inhalation of 20 micrograms procaterol or placebo (freon gas alone) through a metered dose inhaler. Cough threshold was defined as the lowest concentration of capsaicin that elicited five or more coughs. To evaluate the bronchodilator effect of procaterol and the bronchoconstrictor effect of inhaled capsaicin, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) was measured before and one minute after a capsaicin provocation test. This test was carried out both before and 30 minutes after treatment with procaterol or placebo. RESULTS The geometric mean value of cough threshold to capsaicin was significantly increased by procaterol and placebo in both groups of patients but not in the control subjects. The increment in the cough threshold was not significantly different between the treatments with procaterol and placebo in each group. FEV1 was significantly increased by procaterol but not by placebo in all three groups. CONCLUSIONS Inhaled procaterol has no effect on airway cough receptor sensitivity to capsaicin. The attenuation of the cough sensitivity seen after inhalation of procaterol in patients with asthma and bronchitis may result from tachyphylaxis to capsaicin.

Abstract
Under electrical stimulation of the optic nerve, intracellular recording and staining techniques were applied to tectal neurons of the frog. In the first part of this study, two response types in 25 cells were examined. One type (type I; 21 cells) was composed of an EPSP followed by an IPSP. The other type (type II; 4 cells) was composed of two successive EPSPs followed by an IPSP. The initial EPSP of type II response was concluded to be monosynaptic, while the other ones were assumed to be disynaptic. These responses were produced by myelinated fibers. Under stronger stimulus intensities, a pair of depolarization and hyperpolarization appeared at longer latencies. In the later part of this study, 22 cells were stained with Procion Yellow. Neurons were classified into three morphological types, i.e. vertical type (V-type; 10 cells), multipolar type (MP-type; 11 cells) and small neuron (S-neuron; one cell). All V-type neurons gave rise to type I response, while either type I or type II responses were recorded from MP-type neurons.
