Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION Diabetes patients develop a variety of metabolic abnormalities in addition to hyperglycemia. However, details regarding change in various metabolites after comprehensive diabetes treatment remain unknown. This study aimed to identify the short-term change in metabolome in inpatients who were subject to comprehensive diabetes treatment, using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-based non-target metabolomics techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS Participants of the present study were randomly recruited from the patients with type 2 diabetes hospitalized due to problems with glycemic control (n = 31) and volunteers without diabetes (n = 30), both of whom were aged between 20 and 75 years. A metabolomic analysis of fasting plasma samples on the 2nd (pre-treatment) and 16th hospital (post-treatment) day with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry using a multiple reaction monitoring mode was carried out. RESULTS A principal component analysis showed that metabolome of fasting plasma was different between individuals with and without diabetes. The metabolome of fasting plasma in diabetes patients after treatment was different from that of pre-treatment, as well as individuals without diabetes. Many amino acids (proline, glycine, serine, threonine, methionine, pyroglutamic acid, glutamine and lysine) were significantly increased by >10% after administering the inpatient diabetes treatment. A hierarchical clustering analysis showed that in the case of patients with markedly decreased monosaccharide levels and increased 1,5-anhydroglucitol, the levels of amino acids increased more significantly. CONCLUSIONS After a 2-week comprehensive treatment, the plasma levels of various amino acids increased in conjunction with the reduction in monosaccharide levels in poorly controlled type 2 diabetes patients.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION Crossing capillaries in the finger nailfold might potentially be a novel diabetic retinopathy (DR) biomarker that could be assessed non-invasively in the clinical setting. However, the association between crossing capillaries and DR is controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between the percentage of crossing capillaries in the finger nailfold and DR in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled 108 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients (aged 40-75 years) who visited the outpatient diabetic clinic at Osaka University Hospital, Osaka, Japan, between May and October 2019. Capillary morphology was assessed using nailfold capillaroscopy based on the simple capillaroscopic definitions of the European League Against Rheumatism Study Group. Details of DR and other laboratory data were obtained from medical records. The association between the tertile of the percentage of the crossing capillary and DR was analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS After adjusting for age, sex, diabetes duration, glycated hemoglobin, systolic blood pressure, body mass index, and use of renin-angiotensin system inhibitor and antihyperlipidemic medication, the percentage of crossing capillaries was significantly associated with DR (multivariable-adjusted odds ratios for increasing tertiles of the percentage of crossing capillary: 1 [reference], 2.05 [95% confidence interval 0.53-7.94], and 4.33 [95% confidence interval 1.16-16.21]; P-trend = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS A higher percentage of crossing capillaries in the nailfold was associated with a higher risk of DR, independent of traditional risk and inhibiting factors, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
We present results from the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser facility, where we used a high intensity (∼10^{20} W/cm^{2}) x-ray pump x-ray probe scheme to observe changes in the ionic structure of silicon induced by x-ray heating of the electrons. By avoiding Laue spots in the scattering signal from a single crystalline sample, we observe a rapid rise in diffuse scattering and a transition to a disordered, liquidlike state with a structure significantly different from liquid silicon. The disordering occurs within 100 fs of irradiation, a timescale that agrees well with first principles simulations, and is faster than that predicted by purely inertial behavior, suggesting that both the phase change and disordered state reached are dominated by Coulomb forces. This method is capable of observing liquid scattering without masking signal from the ambient solid, allowing the liquid structure to be measured throughout and beyond the phase change.

Background
Elevated serum uric acid level was reportedly associated with greater coronary lipid plaque. Xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) is a rate-limiting enzyme in purine metabolism and believed to play important roles in coronary atherosclerosis. However, the relation of XOR to coronary lipid plaque and its mechanism are unclear.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of XOR on coronary lipid plaque and the associated factors with XOR in coronary artery disease (CAD).
Methods
Patients with stable CAD undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention under near-infrared spectroscopy intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) guidance were prospectively enrolled. They were divided into three groups according to serum XOR activities; low, normal, and high. Coronary lipid core plaques in non-target vessels were evaluated by NIRS-IVUS with lipid core burden index (LCBI) and a maximum LCBI in 4 mm (maxLCBI4mm). Systemic endothelial function and inflammation were assessed with reactive hyperemia index (RHI) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio.
Results
Of 68 patients, 26, 31, and 11 were classified as low, normal, and high XOR activity groups. LCBI (474.4±171.6 vs. 347.4±181.6 vs. 294.0±155.9, p=0.04) and maxLCBI4mm (102.1±56.5 vs. 65.6±48.5 vs. 55.6±37.8, p=0.04) were significantly higher in high XOR group than in normal and low XOR groups. Although RHI was significantly correlated with body mass index, diabetes, current smoking, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, no relation was found between XOR activity and RHI (Figure). There were also no relations between XOR activity and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, or platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (Figure).
Conclusion
Elevated XOR activity was associated with greater coronary lipid plaque in patients with stable CAD, without significant relations to systemic endothelial function and inflammation.

Background
Peak oxygen consumption (peak VO2) is a major prognostic parameter in heart failure (HF). Previous studies have shown a relationship between peak VO2 and impaired oxygen uptake and utilization in the peripheral muscles. The purpose of this study was to clarify the determinant of increased peak VO2 by cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in patients with HF.
Methods
We performed echocardiography during upright ramp bicycle cardiopulmonary exercise test in 30 HF patients (61±1 years of age, 80% male) before and 6 months after CR. HR reserve was determined as the change in HR from rest to peak exercise, expressed as a percentage of the predicted maximal HR reserve. Elastance index (EAI) and LV end-systolic elastance index (ELVI) were derived as the ratio of end-systolic pressure to stroke volume index and end-systolic volume index, respectively. End-systolic pressure was estimated from the equation 0.9 × brachial systolic blood pressure. Ventriculo-arterial coupling (VAC) was calculated as the quotient of EAI and ELVI. The ratio of LDEDVI to E/e' mean was used to evaluate LV diastolic compliance. Systemic vascular resistance index was calculated as mean arterial pressure divided by echocardiography calculated cardiac index and multiplied by 80. The arterial venous oxygen content difference (C (A-V) O2 gradient) was calculated by using the Fick equation as: VO2/echocardiography calculated cardiac output.
Results
Peak VO2 and C (A-V) O2 gradient were increased by CR. However, heart rate reserve, systolic reserve, VAC, diastolic reserve and vasodilation reserve were unchanged by CR (Table 1).
Conclusions
Increased oxygen uptake and utilization in the peripheral muscles, rather than cardiac function reserve, may be determinants of increased peak VO2 by CR in HF.

Abstract
InGaN epitaxial layers were grown on c-plane sapphire substrates using the metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE) system at 760 °C. By varying the total flow rate of group-III sources (TMI+TEG) with a fixed molar ratio of group-III sources [TMI/(TMI+TEG)], the influence of V/III ratio were investigated from 4500 to 20000. The grown N-polar InGaN layers were investigated by atomic force microscopy and it is found that the surface roughness decreases with increasing the V/III ratios. High resolution X-ray diffraction analyses show that the phase separation decreases with increasing the V/III ratios. Photoluminescence measurements reveal that the peak position of the band-edge emission shifted toward the shorter wavelength with increasing the V/III ratios. Reciprocal space mapping (RSM) analyses were carried out on InGaN films. At low V/III ratio, the phase separation can be detected in InGaN films.

Abstract
The response of lithium fluoride (LiF) crystal detectors to monochromatic X-rays is measured in the multi-kilo-electron-volt range. This response, as a function of the X-ray dose, is independent of photon energy with no saturation level found. The response, as a function of the incident energy flux, is found to increase for photons of lower energy due to the differing attenuation lengths of X-ray photons within the crystal. Small differences are seen between different confocal microscopes used to scan the data, suggesting the need for absolute calibration. The spatial resolution of the LiF is also measured (1.19-1.36 μm) and is found to be independent of incident photon energy. Finally, a photometric study is performed in order to assess the feasibility of using these detectors at current X-ray free electron laser and laser facilities worldwide.

SummaryThe shortening of the one-stage prothrombin time of plasma brought about by increased foreign surface contact is dependent upon “activation” of factor VII. This activation of VII is the result of a series of activations involving factors XII, IX and probably XI as well. In this it is similar to the activation of factor VIII. Although the prothrombin time in an individual with hemophilia B or the Hageman trait is ‘‘normal”, no shortening occurs after increased foreign surface contact. Factor VII deficient plasma with normal levels of factors XII and IX is “activated” by “contact” in proportion to the level of VII present. No increase in activity of factors II, V, or X was observed after increased foreign surface contact.

Abstract
Human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs) play an important role in peritoneal functions. During long term peritoneal dialysis, it has been reported that HPMCs are damaged by high glucose solution via the signal of transforming growth factor (TGF)- ß1 produced by HPMCs. In this study, we focused on the effect of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), known as an anti-fibrotic and anti-TGF-ß1 agent, on HPMCs damaged by high glucose solution. HPMCs were isolated from specimens of the omentum from nonuremic patients after informed consent had been obtained. After confirming adhesion for 6 hours, 100 μL of DMEM with 0.5%FCS were added at different concentrations (D-glucose; 6, 30mM) with or without HGF (10, 30, 100 ng/mL) for 48 hours. We examined the effects of a high concentration of glucose and then focused on following four critical points: 1) the production of HGF from HPMCs exposed to a high concentration of glucose, 2) the expression of c-Met on HPMCs, 3) the viability of those cells, and 4) matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2). The following significant changes are described herein: high glucose solution and TGF-ß1 i) decreased HGF production from HPMCs and ii) up-regulated expression of c-Met on HPMCs, and addition of HGF iii) restored viability of HPMCs damaged by glucose, iv) suppressed TGF-ß1 production by HGF, and v) induced up-regulation of MMP-2 and decreased TIMP-2 production by HPMCs. Levels of HGF decreased by high concentrations of glucose in the peritoneal cavity may induce the loss of HPMCs and thereby result in peritoneal fibrosis. These results suggest that HGF is an effective agent in the regeneration of peritoneal membrane damaged by high glucose solution.

Abstract
We implemented an antimicrobial stewardship (AS) program whereby pharmacists sought appropriate use of antimicrobial agents in January 2012. At that time, we targeted anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) agents and carbapenems; however, in January 2014, we added tazobactam/piperacillin (TAZ/PIPC). We evaluated outcomes using multilateral analyses. The average one-day dosage of carbapenems increased; however, the duration of administration and number of recipient patients decreased significantly (P < 0.01). Moreover, the percentage of patients receiving meropenem (MEPM), for whom the time above minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 40% or higher increased (P < 0.01). In contrast, patient utilization of TAZ/PIPC increased significantly after targeting of carbapenems as specific antibacterial agents. However, after TAZ/PIPC was targeted as a specific antibacterial agent, the number of TAZ/PIPC administrations decreased significantly (P < 0.01). The duration of hospitalization and mortality rate in patients receiving specific antibacterial agents significantly decreased after implementation of the AS program (P < 0.01). In conclusion, pharmacist's interventions to provide AS and patient follow-up reduced improper use and promoted proper administration of antibacterial agents. Furthermore, AS was effective in improving patient prognoses and suppressing drug-resistant strains, as well as promoting effective treatment.

Abstract
Retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma is a relatively rare and aggressive tumor. Because of its rarity, it is difficult to arrive at a definite diagnosis preoperatively and to design an effective strategy. Here the authors report a case of peritoneal leiomyosarcoma in which diagnosis was difficult because the clinical course resembled that of ovarian cancer. A 77-year-old woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer underwent laparotomy. The excised tumor contained a necrotic polypoid mass that histologically displayed the features of leiomyosarcoma. The patient received adjuvant chemotherapy with a combination of gemcitabine and docetaxel but died two months after surgery owing to the aggressive behavior of the tumor. Because the preoperative diagnosis in this case was ovarian cancer, arriving at a treatment strategy assuming peritoneal leiomyosarcoma was difficult. If complete surgical resection of tumor is not performed, as in the present case, the prognosis can be extremely poor.

Abstract
Direct metrology of coherent short-wavelength beamlines is important for obtaining operational beam characteristics at the experimental site. However, since beam-time limitation imposes fast metrology procedures, a multi-parametric metrology from as low as a single shot is desirable. Here a two-dimensional (2D) procedure based on high-resolution Fresnel diffraction analysis is discussed and applied, which allowed an efficient and detailed beamline characterization at the SACLA XFEL. So far, the potential of Fresnel diffraction for beamline metrology has not been fully exploited because its high-frequency fringes could be only partly resolved with ordinary pixel-limited detectors. Using the high-spatial-frequency imaging capability of an irradiated LiF crystal, 2D information of the coherence degree, beam divergence and beam quality factor M2 were retrieved from simple diffraction patterns. The developed beam metrology was validated with a laboratory reference laser, and then successfully applied at a beamline facility, in agreement with the source specifications.

Abstract
This study was retrospectively carried out to compare the efficacy of echinocandins such as micafungin (MCFG) and caspofungin (CPFG) in the treatment of antibiotic-unresponsive febrile patients with hematologic malignancies. A total of 163 patients received either MCFG or CPFG. We evaluated the efficacy of echinocandin against fever decline in all patients. Fever decline, defined as a body temperature of less than 37.5 °C sustained for more than 48 h without scheduled antipyretic medication. Efficacy assessments showed that the incidence of fever decline was not significantly different between the MCFG and CPFG groups (P=0.599). The median number of days from the start of echinocandin administration to fever decline was 5 in both the MCFG and CPFG groups. Multivariate analysis showed that the use of anti-MRSA drugs (HR, 0.64; 95%CI, 0.45-0.90; P=0.011) and a change from echinocandins to voriconazole or liposomal-amphotericin B (HR, 0.50; 95%CI, 0.30-0.74; P<0.001) are significant risk factors for sustained fever. A significant difference (P=0.002) in incidence of fever decline was however associated with differences in the timing of anti-MRSA drug administration. The median number of days from the start of echinocandin administration to fever decline was 5 when administration of the anti-MRSA drug occurred "simultaneously or prior to echinocandin start" and 11 in the "next day or later of echinocandin start" group. In other words, starting anti-MRSA drug treatment after echinocandin treatment is a risk factor. In conclusion, MCFG and CPFG have similar efficacy as empirical antifungal agents in the treatment of antibioticunresponsive febrile patients with hematopoietic malignancies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is endemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the prevalence of HCV antibodies (anti-HCV) is reported to range from 0.2% to 13.7%. However, the reported prevalence rates have been inconsistent. Therefore, a meta-analysis of observational studies was conducted to provide updates on the prevalence of HCV infection in the DRC. STUDY DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS Medline, EMBASE and Google Scholar were searched for publications reporting on HCV infection in the DRC up to autumn 2015. In addition, a manual search was undertaken to detect relevant papers. Studies performed in groups at low risk of HCV (blood donors and pregnant women) were used for the meta-analysis. The random effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of anti-HCV. RESULTS Sixteen studies with 13,799 participants (aged 6 months-71 years) met the inclusion criteria. The studies were performed in blood donors, pregnant women, military personnel, individuals with human immunodeficiency virus, children, commercial sex workers, Congolese patients living in Canada, patients with sickle cell disease and hospitalized patients. The reviewed studies revealed the presence of anti-HCV in almost all studied age groups and did not differ between sexes. The pooled prevalence of anti-HCV was 2.9% [95% confidence interval 1.5-4.3%]. Subgroup analyses revealed that the prevalence rates of anti-HCV in blood donors and pregnant women were 2.7% (95% confidence interval: 1.1-4.4%) and 3.3% (1.4-5.1%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS HCV infection remains an issue of public concern in the DRC, demonstrating a need for adequate hepatitis control programmes. Efforts must be made to virtually eliminate transfusion-transmitted HCV throughout the country.

Abstract
Neutropenia may develop as an adverse event in patients with multiple myeloma receiving lenalidomide (LEN) plus dexamethasone (DEX) therapy. In the present study, we examined the risk factors associated with grade 3/4 neutropenia during the first cycle of LEN plus DEX therapy. We observed that hemoglobin level (≤ 8.5 g/dl) was a significant risk factor for grade 3/4 neutropenia during the first cycle of therapy (odds ratio: 19.40; 95% confidence interval: 2.68-141.00; p < 0.01). thus, our findings suggest that determining the hemoglobin level could be useful in the risk management for neutropenia in patients receiving LEN plus DEX therapy.

Abstract
Inappropriate antimicrobial treatment could adversely affect the recovery of patients with aspiration pneumonia. We attempted to identify inappropriate antibacterial treatment and to determine the standard use of anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) drugs in aspiration pneumonia patients with MRSA-positive in sputum. Aspiration pneumonia patients with MRSA-positive sputum treated between January 2013 and May 2013 were included in this study to determine the risk factors for death during hospitalization. The relationship between anti-MRSA medicine use and death during hospitalization was also investigated. More than 10⁷ MRSA colony-forming units in sputum culture, creatinine clearance of less than 30 mL/min, and quinolone use were found to be risk factors for death during hospitalization. The death rate during hospitalization was significantly lower in cases a Geckler classification of 4 or 5 when anti-MRSA treatment was initiated soon after the culture was obtained. Therefore, we concluded that the use of quinolones as antibacterial treatment in aspiration pneumonia patients with MRSA-positive sputum should be avoided and that anti-MRSA treatment should be started in cases with good quality sputum cultures.

By varying the ratio of the group-III source flow rate from 0.7 to 0.95, the In-composition and the surface morphologies of InGaN films were changed. The In-composition of N-polar InGaN films was affected by the strain relaxation and the surface morphologies.

Abstract
The wurtzite structure In1−x−yGaxAlyN quaternary system is studied with respect to the unstable region in mixing. The composition in the unstable region is calculated from the free energy of mixing by using the strictly regular solution model. The interaction parameter used in this calculation is obtained by using the delta-lattice-parameter method. Here, the proportionality constant connecting the lattice constants and the band-gap energy is determined by fitting the calculation to the composition data obtained experimentally from InGaN grown by metallorganic vapor phase epitaxy. From this calculation, the ternary alloys of InAlN, InGaN and GaAlN are predicted to always, sometimes, and hardly ever, respectively, have an unstable mixing region. The essential mismatch in thermal equilibrium between the strictly regular solution approximation and the growth conditions in MOVPE is removed by using a fitting calculation and experimental data. Also, the mismatch between the zinc-blende structure and the wurtzite structure is corrected. As a result, this prediction of the phase separation in In1−x−yGaxAlyN becomes more reliable.

Abstract
Automotive side protection moldings, which consist of polymer and an inserted metal core, are produced by profile extrusion coating. The molding process is similar to wire coating process except using a cross-head profile die because the cross-sectional shape of the side protection molding is complex. The polymer is extruded from the profile die covering the metal core, which is fed to the die simultaneously. Then, there are two flow regions within the profile die. One is pressure flow region where the polymer is flowed by pressure gradient. Another is drag flow region including pressure flow. The drag flow appears in the area where the polymer contacts the moving metal core in the die. Finite element analysis was developed for simulating the combined pressure and drag flow in a complex profile die. The flow is assumed to be isothermal planner flow for a non-Newtonian fluid. Power law model is used to represent viscosity of the polymer. Distributions of pressure and velocity are simulated by the analysis. Polymer melt flow through a flow channel of a die for producing the side protection molding was analyzed to achieve uniform velocity at the outlet of the die. A suitable shape of the flow channel was designed by several iterative simulations.

Abstract
Short pulse laser interactions at intensities of 2×10(21) W cm(-2) with ultrahigh contrast (10(-15)) on submicrometer silicon nitride foils were studied experimentally by using linear and circular polarizations at normal incidence. It was observed that, as the target decreases in thickness, electron heating by the laser begins to occur for circular polarization leading to target normal sheath acceleration of contaminant ions, while at thicker targets no acceleration or electron heating is observed. For linear polarization, all targets showed exponential energy spreads with similar electron temperatures. Particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate that the heating is due to the rapid deformation of the target that occurs early in the interaction. These experiments demonstrate that finite spot size effects can severely restrict the regime suitable for radiation pressure acceleration.

Abstract
Experimental evidences are presented showing unusually large and highly anisotropic vibrations in the “simple cubic” (SC) unit cell adopted by calcium over a broad pressure ranging from 30–90 GPa and at temperature as low as 40 K. X-ray diffraction patterns show a preferential broadening of the (110) Bragg reflection indicating that the atomic displacements are not isotropic but restricted to the [110] plane. The unusual observation can be rationalized invoking a simple chemical perspective. As the result of pressure-induced s → d transition, Ca atoms situated in the octahedral environment of the simple cubic structure are subjected to Jahn-Teller distortions. First-principles molecular dynamics calculations confirm this suggestion and show that the distortion is of dynamical nature as the cubic unit cell undergoes large amplitude tetragonal fluctuations. The present results show that, even under extreme compression, the atomic configuration is highly fluxional as it constantly changes.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to assess the effects of long-term physical exercise on peripheral nerve using both nerve conduction study (NCS) and ultrasonography (US). METHODS The authors measured nerve conduction study and ultrasonography in 15 male (mean, 20±1.5 years) handball players and 13 male (mean, 21.3±1.9 years) control subjects. Cross-sectional area of the median nerve was evaluated using ultrasonography at the carpal tunnel and 6 cm proximal to the wrist, and the ulnar nerve at 6 cm proximal to the wrist crease, 2 cm proximal to the medial epicondyle, the epicondyle, and 2 cm distal to epicondyle. RESULTS US shows significantly increased cross-sectional area of both median and ulnar nerve in the players compared with that in the controls, and the latency times in both nerves were significantly delayed in the players compared with that in the controls. Cross-sectional area of the median nerve showed a significant correlation with latency (r=0.330, P<0.01). CONCLUSION This study suggests that the players have a tendency toward having both median and ulnar motor nerve damage in the wrist or elbow region although they are asymptomatic.

Abstract
Hypotension is commonly reported in springtime when health changes, such as autonomic imbalance, are common and its symptoms may cause difficulties in daily activities. In this study, medical data from 101 outpatient clinic attendees (mean age 43.9 years; 16 males) making their first visit for hypotension symptoms, were compared with meteorological data from the clinic's location. The main symptom of hypotension was giddiness on standing. The most common coexisting conditions were gastrointestinal; e.g. gastro-oesophageal reflux disorder and irritable bowel syndrome. The 7-day moving average of total global solar radiation correlated significantly with the 7-day moving average of the number of patients with hypotension. Discriminant analysis revealed an increase in hypotension consultations in the total global solar radiation moving average range 11-19 MJ/m(2), consistent with the local spring season. Guidance--such as wearing compression stockings during springtime--may help to reduce the occurrence of clinical hypotension in susceptible patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Cerebral aneurysm is a frequent cerebrovascular event and a major cause of fatal subarachnoid haemorrhage, but there is no medical treatment for this condition. Haemodynamic stress and, recently, chronic inflammation have been proposed as major causes of cerebral aneurysm. Nevertheless, links between haemodynamic stress and chronic inflammation remain ill-defined, and to clarify such links, we evaluated the effects of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2) ), a mediator of inflammation, on the formation of cerebral aneurysms. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Expression of COX and prostaglandin E synthase (PGES) and PGE receptors were examined in human and rodent cerebral aneurysm. The incidence, size and inflammation of cerebral aneurysms were evaluated in rats treated with COX-2 inhibitors and mice lacking each prostaglandin receptor. Effects of shear stress and PGE receptor signalling on expression of pro-inflammatory molecules were studied in primary cultures of human endothelial cells (ECs). KEY RESULTS COX-2, microsomal PGES-1 and prostaglandin E receptor 2 (EP(2) ) were induced in ECs in the walls of cerebral aneurysms. Shear stress applied to primary ECs induced COX-2 and EP(2) . Inhibition or loss of COX-2 or EP(2) in vivo attenuated each other's expression, suppressed nuclear factor κB (NF-κB)-mediated chronic inflammation and reduced incidence of cerebral aneurysm. EP(2) stimulation in primary ECs induced NF-κB activation and expression of the chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2, essential for cerebral aneurysm. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS These results suggest that shear stress activated PGE(2) -EP(2) pathway in ECs and amplified chronic inflammation via NF-κB. We propose EP(2) as a therapeutic target in cerebral aneurysm.

Abstract
By using temporal pulse shaping of high-contrast, short pulse laser interactions with solid density targets at intensities of 2 × 10(21) W cm(-2) at a 45° incident angle, we show that it is possible to reproducibly generate quasimonoenergetic proton and ion energy spectra. The presence of a short pulse prepulse 33 ps prior to the main pulse produced proton spectra with an energy spread between 25% and 60% (ΔE/E) with energy of several MeV, with light ions becoming quasimonoenergetic for 50 nm targets. When the prepulse was removed, the energy spectra was broad. Numerical simulations suggest that expansion of the rear-side contaminant layer allowed for density conditions that prevented the protons from being screened from the sheath field, thus providing a low energy cutoff in the observed spectra normal to the target surface.

Abstract
Europium hydride EuH(x), when exposed to high-pressure H₂, has been found to exhibit the following structural and valence changes: Pnma(x = 2, divalent) → P6₃/mmc(x = 2, 7.2-8.7 GPa) → I4/m(x > 2, 8.7-9.7 GPa) → I4/mmm(x > 2, 9.7 GPa-,trivalent). With a trivalent character and a distorted cubic fcc structure, the I4/mmm structure is the β phase commonly observed for other rare-earth metal hydrides. Our study clearly demonstrates that EuH(x) is no longer an irregular member of the rare-earth metal hydrides.
