Abstract
Nutrient transporters have been explored for biomimetic delivery targeting the brain. The albumin-binding proteins (e.g., SPARC and gp60) are overexpressed in many tumors for transport of albumin as an amino acid and an energy source for fast-growing cancer cells. However, their application in brain delivery has rarely been investigated. In this work, SPARC and gp60 overexpression was found on glioma and tumor vessel endothelium; therefore, such pathways were explored for use in brain-targeting biomimetic delivery. We developed a green method for blood-brain barrier (BBB)-penetrating albumin nanoparticle synthesis, with the capacity to coencapsulate different drugs and no need for cross-linkers. The hydrophobic drugs (i.e., paclitaxel and fenretinide) yield synergistic effects to induce albumin self-assembly, forming dual drug-loaded nanoparticles. The albumin nanoparticles can penetrate the BBB and target glioma cells via the mechanisms of SPARC- and gp60-mediated biomimetic transport. Importantly, by modification with the cell-penetrating peptide LMWP, the albumin nanoparticles display enhanced BBB penetration, intratumoral infiltration, and cellular uptake. The LMWP-modified nanoparticles exhibited improved treatment outcomes in both subcutaneous and intracranial glioma models, with reduced toxic side effects. The therapeutic mechanisms were associated with induction of apoptosis, antiangiogenesis, and tumor immune microenvironment regulation. It provides a facile method for dual drug-loaded albumin nanoparticle preparation and a promising avenue for biomimetic delivery targeting the brain tumor based on combination therapy.

Abstract
Investigation of retinal neurochemistry in a well-defined chick model of form-deprivation myopia indicated that dopamine and its metabolite 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid are reduced in myopic as compared to control eyes. The reduction in retinal dopamine is evident only during light adaptation and is accompanied by a decreased rate of dopamine biosynthesis. To test whether the alteration in dopamine metabolism is related to eye growth, agents known to interact with dopamine receptors were administered locally to deprived eyes. Remarkably, the expected growth in the axial dimension was reduced, while that in the equatorial dimension was not. Therefore retinal dopamine may participate in the pathway linking visual experience and the postnatal regulation of the eye's growth in the axial dimension. The mechanism for control of chick eye growth in the equatorial dimension remains unknown.

Abstract
Ca2+-induced inhibition of alpha1C voltage-gated Ca2+ channels is a physiologically important regulatory mechanism that shortens the mean open time of these otherwise long-lasting high-voltage-activated channels. The mechanism of action of Ca2+ has been a matter of some controversy, as previous studies have proposed the involvement of a putative Ca2+-binding EF hand in the C terminus of alpha1C and/or a sequence downstream from this EF-hand motif containing a putative calmodulin (CaM)-binding IQ motif. Previously, using site directed mutagenesis, we have shown that disruption of the EF-hand motif does not remove Ca2+ inhibition. We now show that the IQ motif binds CaM and that disruption of this binding activity prevents Ca2+ inhibition. We propose that Ca2+ entering through the voltage-gated pore binds to CaM and that the Ca/CaM complex is the mediator of Ca2+ inhibition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Staphylococcus aureus has a peculiar ability to colonize the skin of patients with eczema and atopic dermatitis (AD), and is consistently found in eczematous skin lesions in these patients. A correlation between the severity of the eczema and colonization with S. aureus has been demonstrated, and it has been determined that bacterial colonization is an important factor aggravating skin lesions. Patients colonized with S. aureus have been treated with antibiotics in several open and double-blind placebo-controlled studies, with conflicting results. OBJECTIVES To investigate the colonizing features of S. aureus in the lesional and nonlesional skin of patients with eczema and AD in China and to compare the therapeutic effect of mupirocin plus hydrocortisone butyrate with vehicle ointment plus hydrocortisone butyrate. METHODS A multicentre, double-blind randomized trial was conducted. Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) scores were evaluated before the start of the trial and on the 7th, 14th and 28th day of treatment. Swabs for bacterial isolation were taken from lesional skin before the start of the trial and on the 7th, 14th and 28th day of treatment, and from nonlesional skin only before the start of the trial. A combination topical therapy with mupirocin plus hydrocortisone butyrate ointment was used in the experimental group, with vehicle ointment plus hydrocortisone butyrate ointment as a control. RESULTS Of 327 patients enrolled in the study, 208 had eczema and 119 had AD. Bacteria were isolated from 70.2% of lesional and 32.7% of nonlesional skin samples from patients with eczema, of which S. aureus accounted for 47.3% and 27.9%, respectively. Bacteria were isolated from 74.8% of lesional and 34.5% of nonlesional skin samples from patients with AD, of which S. aureus accounted for 79.8% and 80.5%, respectively. The colonization density of S. aureus was markedly higher in lesional than in nonlesional skin, both in patients with eczema and with AD (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), and was positively correlated with lesion severity. Considering the EASI scores before and after treatment and the final effective rate, good therapeutic effects were obtained in both the combination experimental groups and the control groups (P < 0.01), and there were no differences in the global therapeutic effect between the two groups in patients with eczema and with AD (P > 0.05). However, in patients with eczema with a clinical score of > 8 or in patients with AD with a clinical score of > 7, the therapeutic effect in the experimental groups was superior to that in the control groups (P < 0.05) on the 7th day of treatment. There were no differences between the two groups on the 14th and 28th days of treatment (P > 0.05). Following the improvement of symptoms and signs of eczema and AD, the positive rates of bacteria and S. aureus were reduced on the 7th day of treatment. CONCLUSIONS This study confirmed that lesional skin of patients with eczema and AD was more frequently colonized with S. aureus than was nonlesional skin. The more severe the eczema, the higher the colonization rate of S. aureus, and S. aureus was also more often present in lesional and nonlesional skin in patients with AD than in those with eczema. Staphylococcus aureus infection is related to the pathogenesis of eczema and AD. An antibiotic-corticosteroid combination and corticosteroid alone both gave good therapeutic effect in eczema and in AD, and both reduced colonization by S. aureus. Early combined topical therapy is beneficial to patients with moderate to severe eczema and AD, and it is unnecessary to use antibiotics at later stages of disease or in mild eczema or AD.

Abstract
To clarify the influence of gender on sympathetic and parasympathetic control of heart rate in middle-aged subjects and on the subsequent aging process, heart rate variability (HRV) was studied in normal populations of women (n = 598) and men (n = 472) ranging in age from 40 to 79 yr. These groups were divided into eight age strata at 5-yr intervals and were clinically diagnosed as having no hypertension, hypotension, diabetic neuropathy, or cardiac arrhythmia. Frequency-domain analysis of short-term, stationary R-R intervals was performed, which reveals very-low-frequency power (VLF; 0.003-0.04 Hz), low-frequency power (LF; 0.04-0.15 Hz), high-frequency power (HF; 0.15-0.40 Hz), the ratio of LF to HF (LF/HF), and LF and HF power in normalized units (LF% and HF%, respectively). The distribution of variance, VLF, LF, HF, and LF/HF exhibited acute skewness, which was adjusted by natural logarithmic transformation. Women had higher HF in the age strata from 40 to 49 yr, whereas men had higher LF% and LF/HF between 40 and 59 yr. No disparity in HRV measurements was found between the sexes in age strata >/=60 yr. Although absolute measurements of HRV (variance, VLF, LF, and HF) decreased linearly with age, no significant change in relative measurements (LF/HF, LF%, and HF%), especially in men, was detected until age 60 yr. We conclude that middle-aged women and men have a more dominant parasympathetic and sympathetic regulation of heart rate, respectively. The gender-related difference in parasympathetic regulation diminishes after age 50 yr, whereas a significant time delay for the disappearance of sympathetic dominance occurs in men.

Abstract
It is recognized that incomplete treatment of an aneurysm may result in recurrent hemorrhage with serious or fatal consequences. For this reason, patients treated at the authors' institution in whom a large portion of the aneurysm neck or sac remained after application of a clip or ligature have been subjected to reoperation. However, 1- to 2-mm residual necks seen in postoperative angiography have been thought to pose little risk. Some cases of aneurysms recurring from a narrow residual neck after clipping have been reported, and a few instances of recurrent aneurysm have been described after apparently complete occlusion of the neck (as observed angiographically or in the surgeon's judgment). In recent years, a surprising number of cases have been presented in which this seemingly unimportant remnant of the neck dilated over a long period to become a dangerous aneurysm. This finding stresses the importance of complete aneurysm occlusion and of postoperative angiography for the recognition of a residual aneurysm neck. This should be important not only in aneurysm clipping but also in the endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms with detachable balloons.

Abstract
We report the identification of RK2, a glial-specific homeodomain protein. RK2 is localized to the nucleus of virtually all embryonic and imaginal glial cells, with the exception of midline glia. Embryos mutant for the gene encoding RK2 are embryonic lethal but normal for early gliogenesis (birth, initial divisions and migration of glia) and axonogenesis (neuronal pathfinding and fasciculation). However, later in development, there are significantly fewer longitudinal glia that are spatially disorganized; in addition, there is a slight disorganization of axon fascicles and a defective nerve cord condensation. This suggests that RK2 is not required for early glial determination, but rather for aspects of glial differentiation or function that are required for embryonic viability.

Abstract
Comoviruses are a group of plant viruses in the picornavirus superfamily. The type member of comoviruses, cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), was crystallized in the cubic space group I23, a = 317 A and the hexagonal space group P6(1)22, a = 451 A, c = 1038 A. Structures of three closely similar nucleoprotein particles were determined in the cubic form. The roughly 300-A capsid was similar to the picornavirus capsid displaying a pseudo T = 3 (P = 3) surface lattice. The three beta-sandwich domains adopt two orientations, one with the long axis radial and the other two with the long axes tangential in reference to the capsid sphere. T = 3 viruses display one or the other of these two orientations. The CPMV capsid was permeable to cesium ions, leading to a disturbance of the beta-annulus inside a channel-like structure, suggesting an ion channel. The hexagonal crystal form diffracted X rays to 3 A resolution, despite the large unit cell. The large ( approximately 200 A) solvent channels in the lattice allow exchange of CPMV cognate Fab fragments. As an initial step in the structure determination of the CPMV/Fab complex, the P6(1)22 crystal structure was solved by molecular replacement with the CPMV model determined in the cubic cell.

Abstract
The 3.0 A resolution crystal structure of Pariacoto virus (PaV) reveals extensive interactions between portions of the viral RNA genome and the icosahedral capsid. Under the protein shell of the T = 3 quasi equivalent capsid lies a dodecahedral cage composed of RNA duplex that accounts for approximately 35% of the single-stranded RNA genome. The highly basic N-terminal regions (residues 7-54) of the subunits, forming pentamers (A subunits) are clearly visible in the density map and make numerous interactions with the RNA cage. The C-terminal segments (residues 394-401) of the A subunits lie in channels near the quasi three-fold axes. Electron cryo-microscopy and image reconstruction of PaV particles clearly show the dodecahedral RNA cage.

Abstract
Characterization of insulin and type I insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) receptors and the effects of insulin and IGF-I on steroidogenesis were evaluated by using purified adult Leydig cells from Sprague-Dawley rats. Purified Leydig cells were found to contain both high and low affinity binding sites for insulin, with Ka values of 1.08 X 10(9) and 1.1 X 10(7) M-1, respectively. Using affinity cross-linking of [125I]iodoinsulin to plasma membrane insulin receptor, several bands were identified by autoradiography under nonreduced conditions with mol wt of 230,000, 280,000, and 300,000. After reduction with 50 mM dithiothreitol, only one band was identified with a mol wt of 130,000, consistent with the alpha-subunit of insulin receptor. Purified Leydig cells also contain specific type I IGF receptors with estimated binding affinity of 0.6 X 10(9) M-1. Multiple high mol wt bands (greater than 250,000) were identified under nonreduced conditions by affinity cross-linking. Under reduced conditions, one band with an approximate mol wt of 135,000 was identified. Purified Leydig cells (10(5) cells/ml) were cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium-Ham's F-12 Nutrient Mixture (1:1) containing 0.1% fetal calf serum at 37 C in a humidified atmosphere of 5% CO2-95% air. Insulin and IGF-I stimulated testosterone formation as early as 3 h after administration, and their effects were completely blocked by the addition of a protein synthesis inhibitor, cycloheximide (1 microgram/ml). Insulin and IGF-I also significantly potentiated hCG-and 8-bromo-cAMP-induced testosterone formation. Furthermore, insulin and IGF-I potentiated hCG-stimulated cAMP formation. This suggests that insulin and IGF-I have effects at both the LH receptor sites and the steps beyond adenylate cyclase. The ED50 values of insulin and IGF-I-stimulated testosterone formation were comparable (25 ng/ml). In conclusion, we found that Leydig cells contain specific insulin and type I IGF receptors, and both insulin and IGF-I are capable of modulating Leydig cell steroidogenesis.

Abstract
Nanog is a transcription factor required for maintaining the pluripotency of embryonic stem cells, and is not expressed in most normal adult tissues. However, recent studies have indicated that Nanog is overexpressed in many types of human cancers, including breast cancer. To elucidate the physiological roles of Nanog in tumorigenesis, we developed an inducible Nanog transgenic mouse model, in which the expression of Nanog in adult tissues can be induced via LoxP/Cre-mediated deletion. Our findings indicate that overexpression of Nanog in the mammary gland is not sufficient to induce mammary tumor. However, when coexpressed with Wnt-1 in the mouse mammary gland, it promotes mammary tumorigenesis and metastasis. In this context, Nanog promotes the migration and invasion of breast cancer cells. Microarray analysis has shown that the ectopic expression of Nanog deregulates the expression of numerous genes associated with tumorigenesis and metastasis, such as the PDGFRα gene. Our findings demonstrate the involvement of Nanog in breast cancer metastasis, and provide the basis for the reported correlation between Nanog expression and poor prognosis of human breast cancer patients. As Nanog is not expressed in most adult tissues, these findings identify Nanog as a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of Nanog-expressing metastatic breast cancer.

Abstract
There is an urgent need to preserve the ever-increasing number (greater than 30,000) of different genetic strains of D. melanogaster that are maintained in national and international stock centres and in the laboratories of individual investigators. In all cases, the stocks are maintained as adult populations and require transfer to fresh medium every two to four weeks. This is not only costly in terms of materials, labour and space, but unique strains are vulnerable to accidental loss, contamination, and changes in genotype that can occur during continuous culture through mutation, genetic drift or selection. Although cryopreservation of Drosophila germ-plasm would be an enormous advantage, many attempts using conventional procedures have been unsuccessful. D. melanogaster embryos are refractory to conventional cryopreservation procedures because of the contravening conditions required to minimize mortality resulting from both intracellular ice formation and chilling injury at subzero temperatures. To overcome these obstacles, we have developed a vitrification procedure that precludes intracellular ice formation so that the embryos can be cooled and warmed at ultra-rapid rates to minimize chilling injury, and have recovered viable embryos following storage in liquid nitrogen. In a series of 53 experiments, a total of 3,711 larvae emerged from 17,280 eggs that were cooled in liquid nitrogen (18.4 +/- 8.8%). Further, using a subset from this population, approximately 3% of the surviving larvae (24/800) developed into adults. These adults were fertile and produced an F1 generation.

Abstract
Fas (CD95) and Fas ligand (FasL) play major roles in staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB)-induced peripheral deletion of Vbeta8+ T cells. We found that peripheral deletion was defective in radiation chimeras with non-functional tissue FasL, regardless of the FasL status of the bone marrow-derived cells. SEB induced a dramatic upregulation of FasL expression and function in nonlymphoid cells of liver and small intestine. This effect was resistant to inhibition by cyclosporin A, which also failed to inhibit peripheral deletion. In SCID animals nonlymphoid tissues did not express FasL in response to SEB unless transplanted lymphocytes were present. Thus, some immune responses induce FasL in nonlymphoid tissues, which in turn kills activated lymphocytes, leading to peripheral T cell deletion.

Abstract
Engagement of the Fas receptor has been reported to induce ceramide generation via activation of acidic sphingomyelinase (aSMase). However, the role of aSMase in Fas-mediated cell death is controversial. Using genetically engineered mice deficient in the aSMase gene (aSMase(-/-)), we found that thymocytes, concanavalin A-activated T cells, and lipopolysaccharide-activated B cells derived from both aSMase(-/-) and aSMase(+/+) mice were equally sensitive to Fas-mediated cell death, triggered by either anti-Fas antibody or Fas ligand in vitro. Similarly, activation-induced apoptosis of T lymphocytes was unaffected by the status of aSMase, and aSMase(-/-) mice failed to show immunological symptoms seen in animals with defects in Fas function. In vivo, intravenous injection of 3 microg/25 g mouse body weight of anti-Fas Jo2 antibody into aSMase(-/-) mice failed to affect hepatocyte apoptosis or mortality, whereas massive hepatocyte apoptosis and animal death occurred in wild type littermates. Animals heterozygous for aSMase deficiency were also significantly protected. Susceptibility of aSMase(-/-) mice to anti-Fas antibody was demonstrated with higher antibody doses (>/=4 microg/25 g mouse). These data indicate a role for aSMase in Fas-mediated cell death in some but not all tissues.

Abstract
We have recently reported an influenza virus neuraminidase inhibitor, RWJ-270201 (BCX-1812), a novel cyclopentane derivative discovered through structure-based drug design. In this paper, we compare the potency of three compounds, RWJ-270201, oseltamivir, and zanamivir, against neuraminidase enzymes from various subtypes of influenza. RWJ-270201 effectively inhibited all tested influenza A and influenza B neuraminidases in vitro, with 50% inhibitory concentrations of 0.09 to 1.4 nM for influenza A neuraminidases and 0.6 to 11 nM for influenza B neuraminidases. These values were comparable to or lower than those for oseltamivir carboxylate (GS4071) and zanamivir (GG167). RWJ-270201 demonstrated excellent selectivity (>10,000-fold) for influenza virus neuraminidase over mammalian, bacterial, or other viral neuraminidases. Oral administration of a dosage of 1 mg/kg of body weight/day of RWJ-270201 for 5 days (beginning 4 h preinfection) showed efficacy in the murine model of influenza virus infection as determined by lethality and weight loss protection. RWJ-270201 administered intranasally at 0.01 mg/kg/day in the murine influenza model demonstrated complete protection against lethality, whereas oseltamivir carboxylate and zanamivir at the same dose demonstrated only partial protection. In the delayed-treatment murine influenza model, oral administration of a 10-mg/kg/day dose of RWJ-270201 or oseltamivir (GS4104, a prodrug of GS4071) at 24 h postinfection showed significant protection against lethality (P < 0.001 versus control). However, when the treatment was delayed for 48 h, no significant protection was observed in either drug group. No drug-related toxicity was observed in mice receiving 100 mg/kg/day of RWJ-270201 for 5 days. These efficacy and safety profiles justify further consideration of RWJ-270201 for the treatment and prevention of human influenza.

Abstract
Periodontitis is the primary cause of tooth loss, but there is no effective treatment to repair inflammatory bone loss in periodontitis. Exosomes emerge as essential paracrine factors of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that mediated tissue regeneration. Here, we investigated the potential of exosomes secreted by periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) as therapeutics for the bone defect in periodontitis. Exosomes secreted from PDLSCs derived from healthy periodontal ligaments (h-PDLSCs) and their function were evaluated on PDLSCs isolated from the inflammatory periodontal ligament of periodontitis patients (i-PDLSCs). Treatment of exosomes of h-PDLSCs led to an increase in the formation of mineralized nodules and the expressions of osteogenic genes and proteins in i-PDLSCs. Mechanistically, h-PDLSCs-exosomes suppressed the over-activation of canonical Wnt signaling to recover the osteogenic differentiation capacity of i-PDLSCs. To evaluate the therapeutic of exosomes on inflammatory bone loss, h-PDLSCs-exosomes loaded with Matrigel or β-TCP were employed to repair bone defects in rat models of periodontitis. Compared to the vehicle-treated control group, h-PDLSCs-exosomes-treated rats resulted in more bone formation in the defect of alveolar bone. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that exosomes derived from healthy PDLSCs could rescue the osteogenesis capacity of endogenous stem cells under an inflammatory environment and promote regeneration of alveolar bone. Our findings suggest that MSCs-derived exosome is an effective and practical cell-free MSC therapeutic for the treatment of periodontitis. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: There is no effective treatment to repair inflammatory bone loss in periodontitis. Abstract
Inflammation and infection induce an acute phase response. The response is characterized by fever and production of interleukin-1 (IL-1). In the present study we evaluated the effects of interleukin-1 on Leydig cell function in primary culture. hCG-stimulated testosterone formation was markedly reduced by IL-1, with an ED50 of 1 U/ml. Basal testosterone production was slightly enhanced in the presence of low concentrations of IL-1, while high concentrations of IL-1 inhibited testosterone formation. Significant inhibition of hCG-stimulated testosterone formation was noted as early as 8 h after the addition of IL-1. IL-1 also inhibited hCG-stimulated cAMP formation, as well as 8-bromo-cAMP- and forskolin-stimulated testosterone synthesis. Furthermore, LH binding to Leydig cells was reduced by human IL-1. The inhibitory effects of IL-1 were reversed only partially by the addition of a cyclooxygenase inhibitor, indomethacin (0.1 mM), even though prostaglandin E2 formation was completely blocked. This indicates that the observed effects of IL-1 are not completely mediated by increased PGE2 formation. The present study suggests that IL-1 is a potent modulator of Leydig cell steroidogenesis. Decreased testosterone formation may modulate the immune response and contribute to the catabolic changes occurring during infection.

Abstract
In vitro studies have demonstrated that intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) are constitutively cytotoxic; however, the mechanism and target of their cytotoxicity are unknown. Apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) and an increase in IEL numbers are classical signs of intestinal graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), although whether IEL can mediate IEC apoptosis directly in GVHD is unclear. Recent evidence suggests that target epithelial organ injury observed in GVHD is predominantly Fas-mediated; therefore, we investigated the possibility that IEL induce apoptosis of IEC through a Fas-mediated mechanism. Here, we demonstrate that the IEL isolated from normal mice readily display potent Fas ligand (FasL)-mediated killing activity after CD3 stimulation, and that IEC express Fas, suggesting that IEC are potential targets for FasL-mediated killing by IEL. In vitro, IEL isolated from GVHD mice have markedly increased FasL-mediated killing potential and are spontaneously cytolytic toward host-derived tumor cells predominantly through a Fas-mediated pathway. In vivo transfer of IEL isolated from GVHD mice induced significantly more IEC apoptosis in F1 wild-type mice than in Fas-defective F1lpr mice. Thus, these results demonstrate that FasL-mediated death of IEC by IEL is a major mechanism of IEC apoptosis seen in GVHD.

Abstract
Apoptosis (programmed cell death) has been shown to play a major role in development and in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases. A principal mechanism of apoptosis is molecular interaction between surface molecules known as the "death receptors" and their ligands. Perhaps the best-studied death receptor and ligand system is the Fas/Fas ligand (FasL) system, in which FasL, a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) family of death-inducing ligands, signals death through the death receptor Fas, thereby resulting in the apoptotic death of the cell. Numerous cells in the liver and gastrointestinal tract have been shown to express Fas/FasL, and there is a growing body of evidence that the Fas/FasL system plays a major role in the pathogenesis of many liver and gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, graft vs. host disease, and hepatitis. Here we review the Fas/FasL system and the evidence that it is involved in the pathogenesis of liver and gastrointestinal diseases.

Abstract
Nanoplastics have raised considerable concerns since their ubiquity in the environment and potential hazard to health. It has been proven that polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) can be maternally transferred to the offspring. In this study, mice were exposed gestationally and lactationally to PS-NPs (size 100 nm) at different doses (0.1, 1 and 10 mg/L) to investigate the trans-generational poisonousness. Our data illustrated that maternal PS-NPs exposure in pregnancy and lactation resulted in a decline in birth and postnatal body weight in offspring mice. Furthermore, high-dose PS-NPs reduced liver weight, triggered oxidative stress, caused inflammatory cell infiltration, up-regulated proinflammatory cytokine expression, and disturbed glycometabolism in the liver of male offspring mice. In addition, pre- and postnatal PS-NPs exposure diminished testis weight, disrupted seminiferous epithelium and decreased sperm count in mouse offspring. Moreover, PS-NPs induced testicular oxidative injury, as presented by increased malondialdehyde generation and altered superoxide dismutase and catalase activities in the testis of offspring mice. These findings declared that maternal exposure to PS-NPs in pregnancy and lactation can cause hepatic and testicular toxicity in male mouse pups, which put forward new understanding into the detrimental effects of nanoplastics on mammalian offspring.
