Weak measurements and quantum-to-classical transitions in free electron-photon interactions

How does the quantum-to-classical transition of measurement occur? This question is vital for both foundations and applications of quantum mechanics. Here, we develop a new measurement-based framework for characterizing the classical and quantum free electron-photon interactions and then experimentally test it. We first analyze the transition from projective to weak measurement in generic light-matter interactions and show that any classical electron-laser-beam interaction can be represented as an outcome of weak measurement. In particular, the appearance of classical point-particle acceleration is an example of an amplified weak value resulting from weak measurement. A universal factor, [Formula: see text], quantifies the measurement regimes and their transition from quantum to classical, where [Formula: see text] corresponds to the ratio between the electron wavepacket size and the optical wavelength. This measurement-based formulation is experimentally verified in both limits of photon-induced near-field electron microscopy and the classical acceleration regime using a DLA. Our results shed new light on the transition from quantum to classical electrodynamics, enabling us to employ the essence of the wave-particle duality of both light and electrons in quantum measurement for exploring and applying many quantum and classical light-matter interactions.

Coherent nanophotonic electron accelerator

Particle accelerators are essential tools in a variety of areas of industry, science and medicine1-4. Typically, the footprint of these machines starts at a few square metres for medical applications and reaches the size of large research centres. Acceleration of electrons with the help of laser light inside of a photonic nanostructure represents a microscopic alternative with potentially orders-of-magnitude decrease in cost and size5-16. Despite large efforts in research on dielectric laser acceleration17,18, including complex electron phase space control with optical forces19-21, noteworthy energy gains have not been shown so far. Here we demonstrate a scalable nanophotonic electron accelerator that coherently combines particle acceleration and transverse beam confinement, and accelerates and guides electrons over a considerable distance of 500 μm in a just 225-nm-wide channel. We observe a maximum coherent energy gain of 12.3 keV, equalling a substantial 43% energy increase of the initial 28.4 keV to 40.7 keV. We expect this work to lead directly to the advent of nanophotonic accelerators offering high acceleration gradients up to the GeV m-1 range utilizing high-damage-threshold dielectric materials22 at minimal size requirements14. These on-chip particle accelerators will enable transformative applications in medicine, industry, materials research and science14,23,24.

Quantum-Coherent Light-Electron Interaction in a Scanning Electron Microscope

The last two decades experimentally affirmed the quantum nature of free electron wave packets by the rapid development of transmission electron microscopes into ultrafast, quantum-coherent systems. So far, all experiments were restricted to the bounds of transmission electron microscopes enabling one or two photon-electron interaction sites. We show the quantum coherent coupling between electrons and light in a scanning electron microscope, at unprecedentedly low, subrelativistic energies down to 10.4 keV. These microscopes not only afford the yet-unexplored energies from ∼0.5 to 30 keV providing the optimum electron-light coupling efficiency, but also offer spacious and easily configurable experimental chambers for extended, cascaded optical set ups, potentially boasting thousands of photon-electron interaction sites. Our results make possible experiments in electron wave packet shaping, quantum computing, and spectral imaging with low-energy electrons.

Electron phase-space control in photonic chip-based particle acceleration

Particle accelerators are essential tools in science, hospitals and industry^1-6. Yet their costs and large footprint, ranging in length from metres to several kilometres, limit their use. The recently demonstrated nanophotonics-based acceleration of charged particles can reduce the cost and size of these accelerators by orders of magnitude^7-9. In this approach, a carefully designed nanostructure transfers energy from laser light to the particles in a phase-synchronous manner, accelerating them. To accelerate particles to the megaelectronvolt range and beyond, with minimal particle loss^10,11, the particle beam needs to be confined over extended distances, but the necessary control of the electron beam's phase space has been elusive. Here we demonstrate complex electron phase-space control at optical frequencies in the 225-nanometre narrow channel of a silicon-based photonic nanostructure that is 77.7 micrometres long. In particular, we experimentally show alternating phase focusing^10-13, a particle propagation scheme for minimal-loss transport that could, in principle, be arbitrarily long. We expect this work to enable megaelectronvolt electron-beam generation on a photonic chip, with potential for applications in radiotherapy and compact light sources⁹, and other forms of electron phase-space control resulting in narrow energy or zeptosecond-bunched beams^14-16.

Particle acceleration using top-illuminated nanophotonic dielectric structures

In dielectric laser acceleration, nanostructures etched into silicon are used to convert free-space ultrashort laser pulses, incident from the side and parallel to the wafer substrate, to accelerate particles. This current approach is experimentally challenging and, as it turns out, not quite necessary for most experiments and practical applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate and numerically verify the efficacy of top-illuminated structures, and measure a maximum acceleration gradient of 49.2 ± 3.1 MeV/m. We discuss how, in practice, this approach proves superior to the current standard in the field, and expect it to become the definitive choice for nanophotonic particle laser acceleration.

Absence of free carriers in silicon nanocrystals grown from phosphorus- and boron-doped silicon-rich oxide and oxynitride

Phosphorus- and boron-doped silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) embedded in silicon oxide matrix can be fabricated by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD). Conventionally, SiH4 and N2O are used as precursor gasses, which inevitably leads to the incorporation of ≈10 atom % nitrogen, rendering the matrix a silicon oxynitride. Alternatively, SiH4 and O2 can be used, which allows for completely N-free silicon oxide. In this work, we investigate the properties of B- and P-incorporating Si NCs embedded in pure silicon oxide compared to silicon oxynitride by atom probe tomography (APT), low-temperature photoluminescence (PL), transient transmission (TT), and current-voltage (I-V) measurements. The results clearly show that no free carriers, neither from P- nor from B-doping, exist in the Si NCs, although in some configurations charge carriers can be generated by electric field ionization. The absence of free carriers in Si NCs ≤5 nm in diameter despite the presence of P- or B-atoms has severe implications for future applications of conventional impurity doping of Si in sub-10 nm technology nodes.

Interplay of bimolecular and Auger recombination in photoexcited carrier dynamics in silicon nanocrystal/silicon dioxide superlattices

We report results of investigating carrier recombination in silicon nanocrystal/silicon dioxide superlattices. The superlattices prepared by nitrogen-free plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition contained layers of silicon nanocrystals. Femtosecond transient transmission optical spectroscopy was used to monitor carrier mechanisms in the samples. The three-particle Auger recombination was observed in accord with previous reports. However, under high pump intensities (high photoexcited carrier densities) the bimolecular process dominated the recombination. Detailed analysis of measured data and fitting procedure made it possible to follow and quantify the interplay between the two recombination processes. The bimolecular recombination was interpreted in terms of the trap-assisted Auger recombination.

Noisy metamolecule: strong narrowing of fluorescence line: comment

We comment on the recent Letter by Andrianov et al. [Opt. Lett.40, 3536 (2015)OPLEDP0146-959210.1364/OL.40.003536], in which they study a strongly dissipative driven bosonic mode strongly coupled to a two-level system using the quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We recalculate their quantities via sparse numerical solvers and find that their results for larger drives are incorrect, most likely due to insufficient Monte Carlo sampling in the presence of an emergent long time scale. These findings call for a corrected interpretation of the physical behavior of the studied model.
