Evidence for a finite-momentum Cooper pair in tricolor d-wave superconducting superlattices. Nat Commun 2024; 15:3861. Abstract
Fermionic superfluidity with a nontrivial Cooper-pairing, beyond the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state, is a captivating field of study in quantum many-body systems. In particular, the search for superconducting states with finite-momentum pairs has long been a challenge, but establishing its existence has long suffered from the lack of an appropriate probe to reveal its momentum. Recently, it has been proposed that the nonreciprocal electron transport is the most powerful probe for the finite-momentum pairs, because it directly couples to the supercurrents. Here we reveal such a pairing state by the non-reciprocal transport on tricolor superlattices with strong spin-orbit coupling combined with broken inversion-symmetry consisting of atomically thin d-wave superconductor CeCoIn5. We find that while the second-harmonic resistance exhibits a distinct dip anomaly at the low-temperature (T)/high-magnetic field (H) corner in the HT-plane for H applied to the antinodal direction of the d-wave gap, such an anomaly is absent for H along the nodal direction. By carefully isolating extrinsic effects due to vortex dynamics, we reveal the presence of a non-reciprocal response originating from intrinsic superconducting properties characterized by finite-momentum pairs. We attribute the high-field state to the helical superconducting state, wherein the phase of the order parameter is spontaneously spatially modulated.

Abstract
Unconventional superconductivity and magnetism are intertwined on a microscopic level in a wide class of materials, including high-Tccuprates, iron pnictides, and heavy-fermion compounds. Interactions between superconducting electrons and bosonic fluctuations at the interface between adjacent layers in heterostructures provide a new approach to this most fundamental and hotly debated subject. We have been able to use a recent state-of-the-art molecular-beam-epitaxy technique to fabricate superlattices consisting of different heavy-fermion compounds with atomic thickness. These Kondo superlattices provide a unique opportunity to study the mutual interaction between unconventional superconductivity and magnetic order through the atomic interface. Here, we design and fabricate hybrid Kondo superlattices consisting of alternating layers of superconducting CeCoIn5withd-wave pairing symmetry and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn5or antiferromagnetic heavy fermion metals such as CeRhIn5and CeIn3. In these Kondo superlattices, superconducting heavy electrons are confined within the two-dimensional CeCoIn5block layers and interact with neighboring nonmagnetic or magnetic layers through the interface. Superconductivity is strongly influenced by local inversion symmetry breaking at the interface in CeCoIn5/YbCoIn5superlattices. The superconducting and antiferromagnetic states coexist in spatially separated layers in CeCoIn5/CeRhIn5and CeCoIn5/CeIn3superlattices, but their mutual coupling via the interface significantly modifies the superconducting and magnetic properties. The fabrication of a wide variety of hybrid superlattices paves a new way to study the relationship between unconventional superconductivity and magnetism in strongly correlated materials.

Abstract
Reelin-Dab1 signaling is involved in brain development and neuronal functions. The abnormalities in the signaling through either reduction of Reelin and Dab1 gene expressions or the genomic mutations in the brain have been reported to be associated with psychiatric disorders. However, it has not been clear if the deficiency in Reelin-Dab1 signaling is responsible for symptoms of the disorders. Here, to examine the function of Reelin-Dab1 signaling in the forebrain, we generated dorsal forebrain-specific Dab1 conditional knockout mouse (Dab1 cKO) and performed a behavioral test battery on the Dab1 cKO mice. Although conventional Dab1 null mutant mice exhibit cerebellar atrophy and cerebellar ataxia, the Dab1 cKO mice had normal cerebellum and showed no motor dysfunction. Dab1 cKO mice exhibited behavioral abnormalities, including hyperactivity, decreased anxiety-like behavior, and impairment of working memory, which are reminiscent of symptoms observed in patients with psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. These results suggest that deficiency of Reelin-Dab1 signal in the dorsal forebrain is involved in the pathogenesis of some symptoms of human psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Unconventional superconductivity and magnetism are intertwined on a microscopic level in a wide class of materials. A new approach to this most fundamental and hotly debated issue focuses on the role of interactions between superconducting electrons and bosonic fluctuations at the interface between adjacent layers in heterostructures. Here we fabricate hybrid superlattices consisting of alternating atomic layers of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_{5} and antiferromagnetic (AFM) metal CeRhIn_{5}, in which the AFM order can be suppressed by applying pressure. We find that the superconducting and AFM states coexist in spatially separated layers, but their mutual coupling via the interface significantly modifies the superconducting properties. An analysis of upper critical fields reveals that, upon suppressing the AFM order by applied pressure, the force binding superconducting electron pairs acquires an extreme strong-coupling nature. This demonstrates that superconducting pairing can be tuned nontrivially by magnetic fluctuations (paramagnons) injected through the interface.

Abstract
Both prokineticin receptor 2 (pkr2) and prokineticin 2 (pk2) gene-deficient mice have hypoplasia of the main olfactory bulb (MOB). This hypoplasia has been attributed to disruption of the glomerulus that is caused by loss of afferent projection from olfactory sensory neurons (OSN), and to the impaired migration of granule cells, a type of interneuron. In the present study, we examined whether migration of the second type of interneuron, periglomerular cells (PGC), is dependent on the pkr2 expression by observing the localization of distinct subpopulations of PGC: calretinin (CR)-, calbindin (CB)- and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-expressing neurons. In the Pkr2−/− mice, the construction of the layered structure of the MOB was partially preserved, with the exception of the internal plexiform layer (IPL) and the glomerular layer (GL). In the outermost layer of the MOB, abundant CR- and CB-immunopositive neurons were observed in the hypoplastic olfactory bulb. In addition, although markedly decreased, TH-immunopositive neurons were also observed in the outermost cell-dense region in the Pkr2−/−. The findings suggest that the migration of PGC to the MOB, as well as the migration from the core to the surface region of the MOB, is not driven by the PK2-PKR2 system.

Abstract
The effects of reduced dimensions and the interfaces on antiferromagnetic quantum criticality are studied in epitaxial Kondo superlattices, with alternating n layers of heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn_{5} and seven layers of normal metal YbRhIn_{5}. As n is reduced, the Kondo coherence temperature is suppressed due to the reduction of effective Kondo screening. The Néel temperature is gradually suppressed as n decreases and the quasiparticle mass is strongly enhanced, implying dimensional control toward a quantum critical point. Magnetotransport measurements reveal that a quantum critical point is reached for the n=3 superlattice by applying small magnetic fields. Remarkably, the anisotropy of the quantum critical field is opposite to the expectations from the magnetic susceptibility in bulk CeRhIn_{5}, suggesting that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction arising from the inversion symmetry breaking at the interface plays a key role for tuning the quantum criticality in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice.

Abstract
Corticospinal tract (CST) neurons are dislocated in the motor cortex of Reelin-deficient mouse, reeler. In the present study, we examined whether postnatal axonal growth arising from these dislocated CST neurons are normal or not with use of anterograde tracer, DiI and retrograde tracer, HRP. A single injection of DiI into the motor cortex of the normal and reeler mice was made during postnatal period and 8-24 hours later, the animals were sacrificed to examine DiI-labeled CST axons at the lower medulla and spinal cord. Both in the normal and reeler mice, CST axons arrived at the pyramidal decussation and entered into the contralateral spinal cord around on postnatal day (P) 0.5, and descend in the ventral area of the contralateral dorsal funiculus at C2 level on P2, at C8 level on P3, at the mid-thoracic level on P4, and at the upper lumbar level on P8. The similar results were also demonstrated by the retrograde labeling of CST neurons with injection of HRP into the C1 level or upper lumbar enlargement. Next, we examined CaMKIIα expression in the CST axons of the adult normal and reeler mice. CaMKIIα-immunopositive fibers were recognized throughout the CST pathway from the internal capsule to the dorsal funiculus of the spinal cord both in the normal and reeler mice. The present study has demonstrated that ectopic location of cell bodies of reeler CST neurons do not affect postnatal development of CST axons in the spinal cord.

Abstract
Expression of beta 2 subunit of Ca²+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase I (CaMKIβ2) of the rat retina during the developmental period and in the adulthood was studied immunohistochemically. The immunoreactivity of CaMKIβ2 was detected in the earliest development of the primordial retina at embryological day (E) 12. The inner neuroblastic layer from which the presumptive ganglion cells are generated showed the ubiquitous CaMKIβ2 immunoreactivity at E15 and persistently expressed at the same level until postnatal day (P) 0 when the inner neuroblastic layer divides into the ganglionic cell layer and the inner plexiform layer. The strong immunoreactivity was detected in the ganglion cell layer and the moderate one in the internal plexiform layer. CaMKIβ2 immunoreactivities were persistantly expressed throughout the postnatal development at the same level. The low level of intensity was first found in the inner nuclear layer at P7, followed by the outer plexiform, outer nuclear and rod-cone cell layers at the age of P12, respectively. The intensities of CaMKIβ2 immunoreactivities in the inner nuclear and rod-cone cell layers were gradually increased to the strong level by P18 and persisted until adulthood. The present study revealed that the expression of CaMKIβ2 in the retina was detected from the earliest development until adulthood, indicating that CaMKIβ2 may be required in both proliferation and differentiation of the retinal precursor cells and subsequent formation of the functional layers. In addition, CaMKIβ2 immunoreactivity in the rod-cone cell layer implies that this protein may be involved in the visual signaling process.

Abstract
We report peculiar momentum-dependent anisotropy in the superconducting gap observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (x = 0.30, Tc = 30 K). Strongly anisotropic gap has been found only in the electron Fermi surface while the gap on the entire hole Fermi surfaces are nearly isotropic. These results are inconsistent with horizontal nodes but are consistent with modified s± gap with nodal loops. We have shown that the complicated gap modulation can be theoretically reproduced by considering both spin and orbital fluctuations.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We have recently identified a metastasis suppressor gene for colorectal cancer: AES/Aes, which encodes an endogenous inhibitor of NOTCH signaling. When Aes is knocked out in the adenomatous epithelium of intestinal polyposis mice, their tumors become malignant, showing marked submucosal invasion and intravasation. Here, we show that one of the genes induced by NOTCH signaling in colorectal cancer is DAB1/Dab1. Genetic depletion of DAB1 suppresses cancer invasion and metastasis in the NOTCH signaling-activated mice. DAB1 is phosphorylated by ABL tyrosine kinase, which activates ABL reciprocally. Consistently, inhibition of ABL suppresses cancer invasion in mice. Furthermore, we show that one of the targets of ABL is the RAC/RHOGEF protein TRIO, and that phosphorylation at its Tyr residue 2681 (pY2681) causes RHO activation in colorectal cancer cells. Its unphosphorylatable mutation TRIO Y2681F reduces RHOGEF activity and inhibits invasion of colorectal cancer cells. Importantly, TRIO pY2681 correlates with significantly poorer prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer after surgery. SIGNIFICANCE These results indicate that TRIO pY2681 is one of the downstream effectors of NOTCH signaling activation in colorectal cancer, and can be a prognostic marker, helping to determine the therapeutic modality of patients with colorectal cancer.

Abstract
The condition of the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) is considered to be one factor in the etiology of shoulder impingement syndrome, but there are few supporting morphological data. Fifty-two sides of 35 cadavers were investigated macroscopically and histologically using Safranin O, Fast green, and Weigert's iron hematoxylin staining. The ACJs were classified into three major types depending on the presence or absence of the articular disk. In type 1, the articular disk divided the articular cavity completely (n = 2; 3.8%). In type 2, the articular disk was incomplete and divided the joint cavity incompletely (n = 13; 25%). Type 2 was further divided into subtypes 2a and 2b depending on the configurations of the articular facets. In type 3, no articular disk was found in the joint cavity (n = 37; 71.2%). Type 3 was further divided into subtypes 3a, 3b, and 3c depending on the configurations of the articular surfaces. Fewer than half of the ACJ specimens (22/52 or 42.3%) demonstrated an ellipsoid character in which axial rotation was limited. Histological observation revealed that the upper part of the articular disk of the ACJ comprised fibrocartilage while the lower part comprised dense connective tissue. In cases where the ACJ appears to be an ellipsoid joint, its limited axial rotation restricts posterior tilting of the scapula during arm elevation, which could contribute to shoulder impingement syndrome.

Abstract
By using a molecular beam epitaxy technique, we fabricate a new type of superconducting superlattices with controlled atomic layer thicknesses of alternating blocks between the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5, which exhibits a strong Pauli pair-breaking effect, and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn5. The introduction of the thickness modulation of YbCoIn5 block layers breaks the inversion symmetry centered at the superconducting block of CeCoIn5. This configuration leads to dramatic changes in the temperature and angular dependence of the upper critical field, which can be understood by considering the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction arising from the inversion symmetry breaking and the associated weakening of the Pauli pair-breaking effect. Since the degree of thickness modulation is a design feature of this type of superlattices, the Rashba interaction and the nature of pair breaking are largely tunable in these modulated superlattices with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Abstract
We report the observation of a Hall effect driven by orbital resonance in the quasi-1-dimensional (q1D) organic conductor (TMTSF)2ClO4. Although a conventional Hall effect is not expected in this class of materials due to their reduced dimensionality, we observed a prominent Hall response at certain orientations of the magnetic field B corresponding to lattice vectors of the constituent molecular chains, known as the magic angles (MAs). We show that this Hall effect can be understood as the response of conducting planes generated by an effective locking of the orbital motion of the charge carriers to the MA driven by an electron-trajectory resonance. This phenomenon supports a class of theories describing the rich behavior of MA phenomena in q1D materials based on altered dimensionality. Furthermore, we observed that the effective carrier density of the conducting planes is exponentially suppressed in large B, which indicates possible density wave formation.

Abstract
The current-voltage characteristics in the charge order state of the two-dimensional organic conductor α-(BEDT-TTF)(2)I(3) exhibit power law behavior at low temperatures. The power law is understood in terms of the electric-field-dependent potential between electrons and holes, which are thermally excited from the charge order state. The power law exponent steeply changes from 1 to 3 in the range from 30 to 45 K with decreasing temperature, thereby suggesting the occurrence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition; many (few) unbound electron-hole pairs are thermally excited above (below) the transition. The effects of the finite size and interlayer coupling on the power law behavior are discussed.

Abstract
In Mott insulators, the strong electron-electron Coulomb repulsion localizes electrons. In dimensions greater than one, their spins are usually ordered antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Geometrical frustrations can destroy this long-range order, leading to exotic quantum spin liquid states. However, their magnetic ground states have been a long-standing mystery. Here we show that a quantum spin liquid state in the organic Mott insulator EtMe(3)Sb[Pd(dmit)(2)](2) (where Et is C(2)H(5)-, Me is CH(3)-, and dmit is 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) with two-dimensional triangular lattice has Pauli-paramagnetic-like low-energy excitations, which are a hallmark of itinerant fermions. Our torque magnetometry down to low temperatures (30 mK) up to high fields (32 T) reveals distinct residual paramagnetic susceptibility comparable to that in a half-filled two-dimensional metal, demonstrating the magnetically gapless nature of the ground state. Moreover, our results are robust against deuteration, pointing toward the emergence of an extended 'quantum critical phase', in which low-energy spin excitations behave as in paramagnetic metals with Fermi surface, despite the frozen charge degree of freedom.

Abstract
Subcortically projecting neurons and callosally projecting ones are distinct neuronal pools in the cerebral cortex of the rodents. However, cortical efferent neurons are known to project multiple targets transiently by plural collateral axons. These plural axons are eliminated during prenatal and postnatal development. In the cerebral cortex of the Reelin-deficient mouse, reeler, which is caused by mutation of the reelin gene, cortical efferent neurons are ectopically distributed. However, it is still unknown whether cortical efferent neurons in the reeler mouse lose surplus collateral axons or maintain them during developmental periods. If surplus collaterals of malpositioned cortical neurons are not eliminated, neurons projecting subcortically may project their axons to the contralateral hemisphere. To test this plausible hypothesis, we made double injections of two fluorescent dyes, Fast Blue and Diamidino yellow dihydrochloride into two of three regions, i.e., upper cervical cord, ventral lateral thalamic nucleus, and contralateral motor cortex of the normal and reeler mice, to label corticospinal, corticothalamic and callosal commissure neurons in the motor cortex, retrogradely. No double labeled neurons were identified in the motor cortex of the normal and reeler mice, although the distribution patterns of these cortical efferent neurons were completely different between normal and reeler mice. These findings strongly suggest that collateral elimination of cortical efferent neurons during developing periods are not affected in this mutant mouse.

Abstract
We report a highly unusual angular variation of the upper critical field (H(c2)) in epitaxial superlattices CeCoIn(5)(n)/YbCoIn(5)(5), formed by alternating layers of n and a 5 unit-cell thick heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn(5) with a strong Pauli effect and normal metal YbCoIn(5), respectively. For the n=3 superlattice, H(c2)(θ) changes smoothly as a function of the field angle θ. However, close to the superconducting transition temperature, H(c2)(θ) exhibits a cusp near the parallel field (θ=0°). This cusp behavior disappears for n=4 and 5 superlattices. This sudden disappearance suggests the relative dominance of the orbital depairing effect in the n=3 superlattice, which may be due to the suppression of the Pauli effect in a system with local inversion symmetry breaking. Taking into account the temperature dependence of H(c2)(θ) as well, our results suggest that some exotic superconducting states, including a helical superconducting state, might be realized at high magnetic fields.

Abstract
The brain morphology of vertebrates exhibits huge evolutionary diversity, but one of the shared morphological features unique to vertebrate brain is laminar organization of neurons. Because the Reelin signal plays important roles in the development of the laminar structures in mammalian brain, investigation of Reelin signal in lower vertebrates will give some insights into evolution of vertebrate brain morphogenesis. Although zebrafish homologues of Reelin, the ligand, and Dab1, a cytoplasmic component of the signaling pathway, have been reported, the Reelin receptor molecules of zebrafish are not reported yet. Here, we sought cDNA sequence of zebrafish homologue of the receptors, vldlr and apoer2, and examined their expression patterns by in situ hybridization. Developmental gene expression pattern of reelin, dab1, vldlr, and apoer2 in the central nervous system of zebrafish was compared, and their remarkable expression was detected in the developing laminar structures, such as the tectum and the cerebellum, and also non-laminated structures, such as the pallium. The Reelin receptors exhibited different spatial and temporal gene expression. These results suggest a possibility that duplication and subsequent functional diversity of Reelin receptors contributed to the morphological and functional evolution of vertebrate brain.

Abstract
In a superconductor, the ratio of the carrier density, n, to its effective mass, m*, is a fundamental property directly reflecting the length scale of the superfluid flow, the London penetration depth, λ(L). In two-dimensional systems, this ratio n/m* (~1/λ(L)(2)) determines the effective Fermi temperature, T(F). We report a sharp peak in the x-dependence of λ(L) at zero temperature in clean samples of BaFe(2)(As(1)(-x)P(x))(2) at the optimum composition x = 0.30, where the superconducting transition temperature T(c) reaches a maximum of 30 kelvin. This structure may arise from quantum fluctuations associated with a quantum critical point. The ratio of T(c)/T(F) at x = 0.30 is enhanced, implying a possible crossover toward the Bose-Einstein condensate limit driven by quantum criticality.

Abstract
We report on infrared studies of charge dynamics in a prototypical pnictide system: the BaFe2As2 family. Our experiments have identified hallmarks of the pseudogap state in the BaFe2As2 system that mirror the spectroscopic manifestations of the pseudogap in the cuprates. The magnitude of the infrared pseudogap is in accord with that of the spin-density-wave gap of the parent compound. By monitoring the superconducting gap of both P- and Co-doped compounds, we find that the infrared pseudogap is unrelated to superconductivity. The appearance of the pseudogap is found to correlate with the evolution of the antiferromagnetic fluctuations associated with the spin-density-wave instability. The strong-coupling analysis of infrared data further reveals the interdependence between the magnetism and the pseudogap in the iron pnictides.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Partial detachment of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) by dissection of the premasseter space (PMS) is an option for enhancing the effectiveness of SMAS-based rhytidectomy. The aim of this study was to identify the underlying cause of the potential risk of motor nerve impairment sometimes caused by PMS dissection and to consider the effective use of PMS dissection, especially in Asians. METHODS Detailed dissection was carried out on six fixed Japanese cadavers to evaluate facial nerve pathways around the PMS. RESULTS The anterior wall of the PMS was opaque because each face exhibited fibers of various thicknesses within and around the anterior border of the masseter. The ascending ramifications of the buccal trunk ran through the fibers, outside the anterior border of the masseter in some faces but within it in others. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed the presence of a danger zone when dissecting the PMS in Asians. Severing the fibers that fix the SMAS to the masseter fascia around the anterior border of the masseter is sometimes unavoidable to attain good mobility of the SMAS. Surgeons must be mindful of the fibers near the anterior border of the masseter because they may be outside the PMS and contain buccal trunk ramifications; the anterior wall of the PMS tends to be opaque in Asians. Nonetheless, the extent of PMS dissection should be determined on an individual basis. The present findings may help to reduce relevant risks in Asian patients and standardize procedures for effective rhytidectomy. Abstract
Prenatal exposure of methylazoxymethanol acetate, a DNA methylating agent, to pregnant rats on embryonic day 15 is known to produce hippocampal malformation and laminar disorganization of the cerebral cortex. However, there are few studies to demonstrate developmental processes of abnormal structures in the hippocampus. In the present study, we examined complete serial sections of rat brains on postnatal day 0 to 2, which pretreated with methylazoxymethanol acetate on embryonic day 15. At birth, massive cellular clusters were found under the white matter of the cerebral cortex and then, a part of these clusters entered into the hippocampal CA1 sector on postnatal day 2. These ectopic cellular clusters in the CA1 were immunoreactive to anti-calbindin antibody, suggesting that the origin of these cellular clusters is equivalent to that of the cortical layer II/III neurons. Next, we injected FluoroGold into the lateral septal nucleus to examine hippocampo-septal projection. FluoroGold-labeled neurons were scattered in the ectopic cellular cluster, implying that CA1 pyramidal neurons project normally to the lateral septal nucleus. In conclusion, a majority of neurons found in the ectopic cellular cluster caused by prenatal methylazoxymethanol treatment is derived from cortical neurons, and some intrinsic pyramidal neurons in the CA1 of hippocampus are scattered throughout the ectopic cellular cluster.

Abstract
We report a de Haas-van Alphen oscillation study of the 111 iron pnictide superconductors LiFeAs with T(c) ≈ 18 K and LiFeP with T(c) ≈ 5 K. We find that for both compounds the Fermi surface topology is in good agreement with density functional band-structure calculations and has almost nested electron and hole bands. The effective masses generally show significant enhancement, up to ~3 for LiFeP and ~5 for LiFeAs. However, one hole Fermi surface in LiFeP shows a very small enhancement, as compared with its other sheets. This difference probably results from k-dependent coupling to spin fluctuations and may be the origin of the different nodal and nodeless superconducting gap structures in LiFeP and LiFeAs, respectively.

Abstract
High-precision measurements of magnetic penetration depth λ in clean single crystals of LiFeAs and LiFeP superconductors reveal contrasting behaviors. In LiFeAs the low-temperature λ(T) shows a flat dependence indicative of a fully gapped state, which is consistent with previous studies. In contrast, LiFeP exhibits a T-linear dependence of superfluid density infinity λ(-2), indicating a nodal superconducting order parameter. A systematic comparison of quasiparticle excitations in the 1111, 122, and 111 families of iron-pnictide superconductors implies that the nodal state is induced when the pnictogen height from the iron plane decreases below a threshold value of ~1.33 Å.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The chemotherapy for small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) has been adopted for advanced extrapulmonary neuroendocrine carcinomas (EP-NECs). The aim of this study was to clarify the efficacy of standard SCLC regimens when used to treat EP-NECs and to compare the outcome with that for SCLC. METHODS We reviewed the medical records of 136 patients (41 with EP-NEC and 95 with SCLC) who were treated using a platinum-containing regimen for advanced disease between January 2000 and October 2008 at our hospital. RESULTS The primary site of the EP-NEC was the gastrointestinal tract in 18 patients (GI tract group); the liver, biliary tract or pancreas in 16 patients (HBP group), and other sites in 7 patients ('others' group). The response rate in the SCLC patients was 77.8%, and the response rate in the EP-NEC patients was 30.8% (37.5% in the GI tract group, 12.5% in the HBP group, and 57.1% in the 'others' group). The median survival time for the SCLC patients was 13.6 months, while that for the EP-NEC patients was 9.2 months (14.9 months in the GI tract group, 7.8 months in the HBP group, and 8.9 months in the 'others' group). A multivariate analysis demonstrated that a poor performance status, liver involvement, and the treatment regimen were independent unfavorable prognostic factors. CONCLUSION The response rate and prognosis of the patients with advanced EP-NECs were worse than those of the patients with SCLC in this study. The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, liver involvement, and treatment regimen had a larger impact on the prognosis than the primary tumor site, as demonstrated by multivariate analysis.

Abstract
The fluorescent dye PKH26, which binds mainly to the cell membrane, has long stability that enables the tracing of PKH26-labeled transplanted cells in host tissue. In the present study, we examined whether this fluorescent dye works as a retrograde or anterograde tracer to label neural networks within the central nervous system of adult and postnatal day 3 (P3) mice. A small injection of the dye into the medullospinal junction resulted in the retrograde labeling of corticospinal tract (CST) neurons in layer V of the sensory-motor cortex both in the adult mice and pups. Injection of the dye into the motor cortex of the P3 pups resulted in the anterograde labeling of CST fibers at a single fiber resolution level, although a similar injection of the dye into the motor cortex of the adult mice failed to stain CST fibers anterogradely. These results suggest that, while PKH26 works as a retrograde or anterograde tracer, anterograde labeling of the adult tracts can not be expected.

Abstract
The cerebral hemispheres are directly connected by three major interhemispheric fibers: the corpus callosum, the anterior commissure, and the hippocampal commissure. RA-GEF-1 (also termed Rapgef2) is a guanine nucleotide exchange factor responsible for sustained activation of Rap1. We previously reported anatomical defects of the major forebrain commissures in the adult dorsal telencephalon-specific RA-GEF-1 conditional knockout (cKO) mice. In this study, we use neuroanatomical tracing and immunohistochemistry to study the formation of the commissural fibers during early postnatal development. DiI anterograde tracing reveals the inability of the callosal axons to cross the midline in cKO mice, thereby forming Probst bundles on the ipsilateral side, which is associated with the absence of the indusium griseum glia and the glial sling at the cortical midline. Wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase retrograde tracing verifies the agenesis of the anterior commissure in cKO mice, and DiI anterograde tracing confirms the deviation of the fibers from their original tract. As for the hippocampal commissure, agenesis and hypoplasia are observed in its dorsal and ventral parts, respectively. These results indicate the essential role of RA-GEF-1 in the proper formation of the cerebral midline commissures.

Abstract
Total ion yield spectrum of perfluorocyclobutane (c-C(4)F(8)) has been measured in the C and F K-shell excitation regions. The peak assignments are presented based on angle-resolved photofragment ion mass spectrometry. The peaks at 291.34 and 688.5 eV are found to come from the transitions from the C 1s and the F 1s to the lowest unoccupied b(2)σ(CF)* orbital, respectively. A photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence spectrum is acquired at 700.1 eV for clarifying the breakdown pathways of c-C(4)F(8)(2+). Two series of the pathways are identified; fission of F atom(s) followed by charge separation and elimination of CF(2) or CF(3) followed by charge separation.

Abstract
We report the specific heat discontinuity, ΔC/T(c), at T(c) = 28.2 K of a collage of single crystals of BaFe(2)(As(0.7)P(0.3))(2) and compare the measured value of 38.5 mJ mol(-1) K(-2) with other iron pnictide and iron chalcogenide (FePn/Ch) superconductors. This value agrees well with the trend established by Bud'ko, Ni and Canfield, who found that ΔC/T(c) is proportional to aT(c)(2) for 14 examples of doped Ba(1 - x)K(x)Fe(2)As(2) and BaFe(2 - x)TM(x)As(2), where the transition metal TM = Co and Ni. We extend their analysis to include all the FePn/Ch superconductors for which ΔC/T(c) is currently known and find ΔC/T(c) is proportional to aT(c)(1.9) and a = 0.083 mJ mol(-1) K(-4). A comparison with the elemental superconductors with T(c) > 1 K and with A-15 superconductors shows that, contrary to the FePn/Ch superconductors, electron-phonon-coupled conventional superconductors exhibit a significantly different dependence of ΔC on T(c), namely ΔC/T(c) is proportional to aT(c)(1.9). However ΔC/γT(c) appears to be comparable in all three classes (FePn/Ch, elemental and A-15) of superconductors with, for example, ΔC/γT(c) = 2.4 for BaFe(2)(As(0.7)P(0.3))(2). A discussion of the possible implications of these phenomenological comparisons for the unconventional superconductivity believed to exist in the FePn/Ch is given.
