Abstract
Objective: To analyze the prevalence trend of malnutrition among Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 7-18 years from 2010 to 2019. Methods: Based on the data from the Chinese National Surveys on Students' Constitution and Health in 2010, 2014 and 2019, about 215 102, 214 268 and 212 713 Han students aged 7-18 years were included in this study. According to the National Screening Standard for Malnutrition of School-age Children and Adolescents, the detection rate of malnutrition among Chinese Han children and adolescents aged 7-18 was calculated, and the prevalence trend of malnutrition from 2010 to 2019 was analyzed. Results: In 2019, the detection rate of malnutrition among Chinese Han students aged 7-18 years was 8.64% (18 381/212 713), of which the rate of growth retardation, moderate-to-severe wasting and mild wasting was 0.50% (1 062/212 713), 3.25% (6 914/212 713) and 4.89% (10 405/212 713), respectively. In 2019, the detection rate of malnutrition in these boys was higher than that of girls (9.97% vs. 7.31%), and the detection rate in rural areas was higher than that in cities (9.30% vs. 7.98%). The detection rates were 9.74% (5 252/53 916), 8.17% (4 408/53 937), 7.29% (3 885/53 310), and 9.38% (4 836/51 550) in 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, and 16-18 years groups, and 8.14% (6 563/80 618), 7.61% (4 237/55 694) and 9.92% (7 581/76 401) in the eastern, central, and western regions. Malnutrition among students in China was mainly caused by mild wasting, and the detection rate of growth retardation accounted for only 5.78% (1 062/18 381). Malnutrition was mostly concentrated in the southwest region, and the rate was relatively low in eastern provinces. In three surveys from 2010 to 2019, the detection rate of malnutrition among Han students aged 7-18 in China decreased gradually, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Among them, the detection rates in western rural areas decreased significantly, as well as the gap between urban and rural areas. Compared with that in 2014, the detection rate of malnutrition in Shandong, Hunan, Qinghai and Hainan provinces in 2019 decreased significantly (P<0.05). Conclusion: In 2019, the malnutrition of Chinese children and adolescents aged 7-18 years is dominated by wasting malnutrition. The detection rate shows a downward trend from 2010 to 2019, with regional differences.

Abstract
Introduction Health professionals who work in mental healthcare settings need to use standardised, objective instruments; however, it is also extremely important that they maintain a client-focused perspective. The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability of the 'Traditional Chinese version of the Occupational Self-Assessment' (TC-OSA). Methods A total of 593 participants with mental illnesses participated in the study. The data were analysed using confirmatory factor analysis as well as the Rasch measurement model. Results The results of our analysis revealed that the TC-OSA encompasses four domains: self-performance (11 items), self-habituation (5 items), self-volition (5 items) and environment (8 items). Most of the items within each domain were found to have a good fit with the Rasch measurement model, whereas the CFA index was found to have a good fit for only three of the domains, the one exception being the environment domain. Conclusions We suggest applying the scale in clinical practice to identify the priority of intervention and as a measure for changes in outcomes. Further development and refinement of the environmental domain is guaranteed.

Abstract
Background/objectives Patient-reported outcome measures have been found to be an effective method of reflecting client perspectives on their personal health condition. The primary aim of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of the self-reported Activities of Daily Living Scale (sf-ADLS) using Rasch analysis in Taiwan. Methods A total of 455 people were included in this study; 224 were persons with mental illness and 231 were healthy adults. We applied Rasch analysis as the means of testing the psychometrics of the scale. Results The final version of the sf-ADLS used in this study included 14 items, with no differential item functioning being discernible on the gender variable. The scale was found to be of use in classifying the subjects into four levels of independence. Conclusions The revised sf-ADLS conforms to the Rasch measurement model in the formulation of a unidimensional scale. The scale can be used to measure the level of independence with acceptable reliability (internal consistency as 0.9) and validity.

Abstract
The dopaminergic system, and in particular the dopamine D2 receptor, has been profoundly implicated in reward mechanisms in the brain. Dysfunction of the D2 dopamine receptors leads to aberrant substance seeking behaviour (alcohol, drug, tobacco, and food) and other related behaviours (pathological gambling, Tourette's syndrome, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). We propose that variants of the D2 dopamine receptor gene are important common genetic determinants of the ‘reward deficiency syndrome’.

Abstract
Hyperemesis gravidarum may present with weight loss and tachycardia secondary to dehydration. Its severity correlates with the level of the serum chorionic gonadotropin which can interfere with the assay of the thyroid stimulating hormone. Therefore, hyperemesis gravidarum are at times difficult to be distinguished from hyperthyroidism. Missing hyperthyroidism during pregnancy results not only in inappropriate maternal care, but adverse neonatal outcomes including low birth weight. The authors report a case of hyperemesis gravidarum complicated by the concurrence of hyperthyroidism. Goiter and refractory tachycardia are the useful clues to detect occult hyperthyroidism in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum.

Abstract
BAKGROUND To investigate the efficacy of the "Life Adaptation Skills Training (LAST)" program for persons with depression. METHODS Sixty-eight subjects with depressive disorder were recruited from psychiatric outpatient clinics in Taipei city and were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (N=33), or a control group (N=35). The intervention group received 24-sessions of the LAST program, as well as phone contact mainly related to support for a total of 24 times. The control group only received phone contact 24 times. The primary outcome measure utilized was the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF-Taiwan version. Secondary outcome measures included the Occupational self-assessment, the Mastery scale, the Social support questionnaire, the Beck anxiety inventory, the Beck depression inventory-II, and the Beck scale for suicide ideation. The mixed-effects linear model was applied to analyze the incremental efficacy of the LAST program, and the partial eta squared (ηp(2)) was used to examine the within- and between- group effect size. RESULTS The subjects who participated in the LAST program showed significant incremental improvements with moderate to large between-group effect sizes on their level of anxiety (-5.45±2.34, p<0.05; ηp(2)=0.083) and level of suicidal ideation (-3.09±1.11, p<0.01; ηp(2)=0.157) when compared to the control group. The reduction of suicidal ideations had a maintenance effect for three months after the end of intervention (-3.44±1.09, p<0.01), with moderate between-group effect sizes (ηp(2)=0.101). Both groups showed significant improvement on overall QOL, overall health, physical QOL, psychological QOL, level of anxiety, and level of depression. The within-group effect sizes achieved large effects in the intervention group (ηp(2)=0.328-0.544), and were larger than that of the control group. LIMITATIONS A small sample size in the study, a high dropout rate, lower compliance rates for the intervention group, and lacking of true control group. CONCLUSIONS The occupation-based LAST program, which focuses on lifestyle rearrangement and coping skills enhancement, could significantly improve the level of anxiety and suicidal ideations for persons with depression.

Abstract
A simple and reproducible alignment method for fabricating vertically aligned (VA) liquid crystal (LC) cells with a multi-pretilt structure is developed. A non-uniform vertical electric field is employed in the LC/monomer mixed cells during the photocuring process, and two pretilt domains with a functional small pretilt angle (∼1.6°) in the stabilized VA LC/polymer cells are achieved. The enhanced electro-optical performance of the cell driven by an in-plane switching field is demonstrated. Compared to the pure cell, the 2 wt.% pretilt angle cell shows 36%, 64%, and 76% improvement in the optical switch, the gray-level rise time, and the gray-level fall time responses, respectively, which are obtained at a low driving voltage (≤12 V). When applied to LC devices, the proposed method not only effectively benefits the LC molecular alignment, but it also significantly boosts the electro-optical performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE The Taita symptom checklist (TSCL) is a standardized self-rating psychiatric symptom scale for outpatients with mental illness in Taiwan. This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the TSCL using Rasch analysis. METHODS The TSCL was given to 583 healthy people and 479 people with mental illness. Rasch analysis was used to examine the appropriateness of the rating scale, the unidimensionality of the scale, the differential item functioning across sex and diagnosis, and the Rasch cut-off score of the scale. RESULTS Rasch analysis confirmed that the revised 37 items with a three-point rating scale of the TSCL demonstrated good internal consistency and met criteria for unidimensionality. The person and item reliability indices were high. The TSCL could reliably measure healthy participants and patients with mental illness. Differential item functioning due to sex or psychiatric diagnosis was evident for three items. A Rasch cut-off score for TSCL was produced for detecting participants' psychiatric symptoms based on an eight-level classification. CONCLUSION The TSCL is a reliable and valid assessment to evaluate the participants' perceived disturbance of psychiatric symptoms based on Rasch analysis.

Abstract
We set out in this study to examine a longitudinal dataset using a linear mixed effects model. Our ultimate aim is to identify predictors of the quality of life (QOL) domains and items amongst patients suffering from major depressive disorders. Four categories of variables are included in our analysis, composed of 'personal predisposition', 'psychosocial', 'illness-related' and 'time', while the outcome variables for this study are the 'physical', 'psychological', 'social' and 'environmental' domains of QOL, in conjunction with all of the items within the scale. A total of 104 subjects from an outpatient clinic of a university-affiliated hospital participated in this longitudinal study, with a one-time follow up being carried out on 70 of these subjects (67.3%) who agreed to participate in the follow-up study. The 'severity of depression', 'sense of competence' and 'sense of mastery', 'use of anti-depressant medication' and 'environmental resources' are found to be significant predictors of the detailed aspects of QOL. Of these, 'symptom severity', 'sense of competence' and 'sense of mastery' were found to occur most often. Finally, the results of the present study demonstrate that 'illness-related' and 'psychosocial' categories are capable of predicting the various QOL domains for patients suffering from depression.

Abstract
Abstract
Breast cancer is recognized as one of the most common cancers in women. The prevalence rate of breast cancer in Taiwan is 53/100,000 in 2007. Although the survival rate for the breast cancer was enhanced in recent years, the consequences of the illness, including its impact on the quality of life are in need of attention and treatment. The purpose of the study is to investigate factors related to the quality of life for persons with breast cancer from longitudinal view. The model of the study includes predictors from categories of illness related, psychosocial, contextual and activity participation. The outcome variables are 26 items of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Taiwan version (WHOQOL-BREFTW). The study was approved by the IRB board. One hundred subjects diagnosed as breast cancer were recruited to participate in the study. They were from an outpatient treatment center in a teaching hospital in northern Taiwan. Seventy-six subjects were followed up after three months. The mean age of the subjects was 49.6 (SD=8.6); 77% of them were married; 55% of them had college degree; the average onset duration was 254.7 days (SD=337.7). Seventy percent of the subjects were receiving chemotherapy; 30% of the subjects were receiving targeted therapy. Sixty percent of the subjects were diagnosed as 2nd stage cancer. The study was longitudinal in nature. The average follow up duration was 104 days (SD=15.9 days). The independent variables of the model included: disease stage; number of comorbidity; medication side effect; sense of mastery; sense of competence; level of depression and anxiety; social support; satisfaction with daily occupation; time spent in certain activity and role perofrmance etc. The linear mixed effect model was used to analyze the dataset which offers benefits to overcome missing data, repeated measurement and small sample size. The results of the study showed that overall QOL was predicted by the number of comorbidity, satisfaction with daily occupations, time spent at leisure activity, time at rest and number of roles. Overall health was predicted by side effects, level of depression, level of social support and time spent at leisure activity. Satisfaction with daily occupations was the most important factor to predict QOL, followed by sense of competence, level of depression, level of anxiety, and educational level. “The meaningfulness of life” was predicted only by social support; “Enjoying life” was predicted by educational level, stage of cancer and time spent at leisure activity. “The satisfaction with sex life” was predicted only by “social support”. The results support the importance of participation in daily occupation as a way to improve the QOL of persons with breast cancer. Furthermore, levels of depression, level of anxiety as well as sense of competence are significant factors to be addressed. Finally, social support provides essential buffering effect on the aspect of QOL.

Abstract
Introduction: This study examined the psychometric properties of the Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool, using both item response theory and classical test theory. Method: One hundred and one people with mental health problems, aged 18–65 years, were recruited. The Chinese version of the Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool, the National Taiwan University Hospital Symptom Checklist, the Volitional Questionnaire, the Assessment of Communication and Interaction Skills, and the Mini Mental State Examination were administered. Rasch analysis and correlational analysis were used to examine the construct, convergent, divergent validity and known group validity. Results: Rasch analysis confirmed that there were six subscales within the Chinese version of Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool. The Volitional Questionnaire strongly correlated with the volition subscale (r = 0.583). The Assessment of Communication and Interaction Skills strongly correlated with the communication and interaction subscale (r = 0.815). The Mini Mental State Examination was moderately correlated with the process subscale (ρ = 0.334) and the symptomatology was not associated with any of the subscales as expected. There were significant differences on selected subscale scores across four known groups of participants. Conclusion: The Chinese version of the Model of Human Occupation Screening Tool was valid when applied to people with mental health problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies showed that idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) carried an increased risk of cancers. However, no large-scale study of IIM has been conducted in the Chinese population. OBJECTIVES We sought to delineate the association of IIM and various cancer types from a nationwide database in Taiwan. METHODS We analysed the published national data from records of National Health Insurance claims. Cases of dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM) from 2000 to 2005 and cancers registered in the catastrophic illness profile from 1997 to 2006 were collected. A nationally representative cohort of 1,000,000 enrollees was included for comparison. RESULTS In total, 136 patients (12.8%) among 1059 cases of DM and 46 persons (7.0%) among 661 cases of PM carried internal malignancies. Patients with DM tended to have cancers of nasopharynx, lung and breast. On the other hand, patients with PM tended to have breast, uterine cervix and lung cancers. Compared with the general population, DM gave a 10-fold increased risk for cancers, in which a 66-fold increased risk for nasopharyngeal carcinoma and a 31-fold increased risk for lung cancer were the two most significant. For patients with PM, a 6-fold increased risk for cancer was observed. Juvenile DM had a 16-fold increased risk for haematopoietic or lymphoid malignancy. Two thirds of comorbid malignancies were detected shortly after the diagnoses of IIM, within a mean of 1-2 years. Overall, younger patients with IIM carried the highest risk for malignancies, especially those in their twenties and thirties. CONCLUSIONS This is the first large-scale study to report the associated malignancies and the cancer risk of IIM in Taiwan.

Abstract
This study examined the dependability of the Assessment of Communication and Interaction Skills-Chinese version (ACIS-C) with psychiatric participants in Taiwan. A convenience sample of 101 participants diagnosed with psychiatric illness were recruited from four day-care wards in northern and eastern Taiwan. The results of the Rasch analysis showed that the ACIS-C items coalesced to form a measure of communication/interaction and the 4-point rating scale functioned as intended. The ACIS-C differentiated participants into six levels of communication and interaction skills. The findings support the conclusion that the ACIS-C is a valid and sensitive tool when used with Chinese clients. Moreover the study supports the generalizability of the Model of Human Occupation concept of communication and interaction skills to an Eastern context.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The evaluation of Chinese herbal medicines (CHM) to allergic rhinitis (AR) by large-scale pharmaco-epidemiological study is not ease found, although CHM had been reported to have potential effect for AR in some clinical trials. AIMS OF THE STUDY To explore the frequency and pattern of CHM prescriptions on AR, we have the study by analysing the population-based CHM database in Taiwan. METHODS The way for this study was linked and processed the complete traditional Chinese medicine database for Taiwanese recorded in the year 2002. The diagnosis of AR was extracted with the only single ICD-9 Code of 477 to calculate the frequency and pattern of prescriptions. Association rule was applied to analyse co-prescription of CHM for patients with AR. RESULTS In the year 2002, among the 22 520 776 valid beneficiaries of the National Health Insurance, Taiwan, 914 612 subjects (3.8% of the total valid beneficiaries) have diagnosed AR. There were 35.6% of AR patients been treated by CHM. The peak age of AR patients treated by CHM was at the first decade (0-10). For the AR patients, the most common Chinese herbal formula prescription was Shin-yi-qing-fei-tang, or Angelica dahurica (Bai-zhi) for the single Chinese herb. While for the combination treatments the most common prescription was the two formulae, Xiao-qing-long-tang and Shin-yi-san. CONCLUSIONS Because of the high utilization rate of the CHM treatment for AR, a large-scale randomized trial warrants further research for its efficacy and safety.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the predictive factors, and their relative strengths, for predicting length of rehabilitation stay using the path model. One hundred and seventeen stroke patients were recruited from two rehabilitation units in university-affiliated hospitals in northern Taiwan. The Taiwanese Rehabilitation Database System was used to collect the patient's relevant information. Path analysis was used to explore the relative strengths of each predictive factor. The results showed that the ability to engage in self-care activities was the only direct predictor, whereas subjective well-being and cognitive social skills had an indirect effect on the length of rehabilitation stay, mediating through cognitive-social skills and ability to engage in activities of daily living, respectively. The effect of subjective well-being, mediating through cognitive-social skills, on the length of stay was about 1.5 times that of the effects of ability to engage in self-care activities on length of stay. The results of the study confirmed that the ability of stroke patients to engage in self-care activities consistently had a major impact on the length of stay. The effect of subjective well-being of the patients on the rehabilitation outcome raised the issue of psychosocial rehabilitation as an important part of successful rehabilitation services.

Abstract
Direct injection of VX2 cell suspension into the liver is simple and widely used. Implantation of a fragment of VX2 tumour into the liver using a surgical technique has also been developed in the last decade. In this study, we compared these two methods in order to find a better modality for establishing VX2 liver mass. Forty rabbits, each weighing 2.8-3.2 kg, were divided into two groups, 20 rabbits in each. In Group 1, a tumour cell suspension containing 1 x 10(6) cells in a volume of 0.1 ml, was injected slowly into the liver parenchyma using a 27-gauge needle during laparotomy. In Group 2, a 1 mm(3) fragment of VX2 carcinoma was inoculated into the sub-capsule of the left anterior lobe of the liver. In Group 1, three rabbits showed no tumour growth and 10 rabbits showed evidence of leakage and tumour seeding outside of the liver. In Group 2, all but one rabbit showed tumour growth and none showed evidence of tumour seeding. The leakage rates were 50% and 0% for Group 1 and Group 2, respectively. Overall, the success inoculation rate was 35% for Group 1 and 95% for Group 2. In conclusion, to create the VX2 liver tumour model in rabbits, direct implantation of VX2 tumour fragment into the liver achieved better results than injecting cell suspension of VX2 tumour into the liver.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The prescribing of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) had increased greatly in recent years worldwide. Aim of our study was to analyze the utilization patterns of PPIs within the National Health Insurance program in Taiwan from 1997 - 2000. MATERIAL AND METHOD The systemic sampling data-sets from the National Health Insurance Research Database served as data sources. Units of measurement for PPIs were numbers of prescription items and defined daily doses (DDDs). To estimate the proportion of the population treated daily with PPIs, numbers of DDDs per 1,000 inhabitants per day were calculated. In order to realize the role of PPIs in treating Helicobacter pylori-related disorders, we also analyzed various combined prescriptions of PPIs with amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, tetracycline and bismuth. RESULTS In the study period, PPI prescriptions increased nearly 2-fold at the outpatient sector and more than 3-fold at the inpatient sector. Men received more PPI prescriptions, as a whole, than women. Most PPIs were prescribed at the outpatient sector: 93.9% in 1997, 92.3% in 1998, 90.4% in 1999 and 87.3% in 2000. The numbers of DDDs per 1,000 inhabitants per day for all kinds of PPIs were 0.59, 0.78, 1.07, and 1.13 from 1997 - 2000, respectively. While the percentage of monotherapy increased from 63.6% in 1997 to 75.5% in 2000, the combination therapies did not experience a rapid and sustained growth. Among the combination therapies, PPI + amoxicillin + metronidazole and PPI + amoxicillin were popular in 1997 and 1998, but triple therapy with PPI + amoxicillin + clarithromycin predominated in 1999 and 2000. CONCLUSIONS Despite increasing use, prescribing volumes of PPIs in Taiwan were far fewer than those in other developed countries. Treatment of Helicobacter pylori-related disorders in Taiwan followed universal standard.

Analysis of marker or complex chromosomal rearrangements present in pre- and post-natal karyotypes utilizing a combination of G-banding, spectral karyotyping and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Clin Genet 2003; 63:358-67. Abstract
The significance of complex chromosomal rearrangements presents a diagnostic dilemma. In the past, the use of G-banding coupled with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) has been the standard approach. The recent development of spectral karyotyping (SKY) and multicolor FISH (M-FISH) has resulted in an increased accuracy of identification of marker or other complex chromosomal rearrangements. However, owing to the additional cost and time associated with SKY or M-FISH, and the restricted availability of such imaging facilities in many centers, it is not feasible to perform these procedures routinely on every sample. In addition, the identification of an aberration by SKY or M-FISH will often require confirmation by FISH. A practical approach is needed to take advantage of the complementary strengths of each method. In our center we utilize an algorithm that dictates the use of routine G-banding for the initial preliminary evaluation of a patient, followed by SKY characterization if marker chromosomes or complex translocations are detected by the G-banding analysis. According to this algorithm, FISH is used to verify the results once the origin of the abnormal chromosome has been determined by SKY. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm, we have analyzed both amniocyte and lymphocyte slides, using a combination of G-banding, SKY, and FISH. Our results confirm that an algorithm which selectively uses SKY or M-FISH will provide an efficient and improved method for pre- and post-natal chromosomal analysis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to access the effects of chinese herbal medicines on Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We use dystrophin-deficient mice (mdx), an animal model of DMD, to evaluate the effect of chinese herbal medicines on locomotor activity. The consumption of water for each mouse was controlled during the three-month experimental session. Each mouse was allowed to drink 3 ml water with or without herbal medicines daily for three months. The estimated intake of chinese herbal medicine in adult mdx mouse with 30 g weight is 100 mg/kg per day, close to a dose used in human. The locomotor activity of the mdx mice was measured every month. Monitoring the locomotor activity of mdx mice after three-month administration of chinese herbal medicines, the results showed that liu-wei-di-huang-wan (LDW) and san-lin-pai-tsu-san (SPS) can facilitate locomotor activity with the parameters of horizontal activity, total distance, number of movements, movement time, vertical activity, number of vertical movements, vertical movement time, stereotypy, number of stereotyped movements, and stereotyped movement time. These results suggest that either LDW or SPS can act as a potent herbal medicine for the pharmacological treatment of DMD patients.

Abstract
Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death in Taiwan and the burden of suffering is still increasing. Building a comprehensive and efficient health care system is crucial to improve the outcome of the diabetics. We implemented the first diabetes shared care system of Taiwan in I-Lan County since August 1996 under the support of Department of Health, the Executive Yuan. This county-wide system was named 'Lan-Yang Diabetes Shared Care System' by the regional steering committee. Regional guidelines for diabetes management were developed after extensive discussion. A multidisciplinary diabetes care team was organized through a training and certification process. Registered patients held diabetes passports to keep clinical record. Physicians of the system use shared referral protocols and sheets. By the end of June 1999, 99 medical professionals had completed their training for diabetes shared care and been certified. The shared care system awarded 26 clinics to hang the lamp signs with the system logo to make them distinguishable. Such clinics have now been available throughout 12 townships in I-Lan County. The number of registered patients carrying diabetes passport increased to 3484 and there was a community-based patient group in every township of I-Lan County. The amount of continuing diabetes clinical training delivered by the specialists to the primary care physicians and non-physician professionals increased to 1681 person-hours per year. The proportion of registered patients undertaking fundus examination within 1 year increased to 30.9%, checking urine micro-albumin to 28.0% and checking HbA(1c) 72.8%, respectively. Mean HbA(1c) value decreased from 8.7% in the first year to 7.9% in the third year. Our study showed that under the co-ordination by regional health bureau with integration of different levels of medical facilities, governmental sectors and non-governmental community resources, the diabetes shared care model is feasible in Taiwan. Through its implementation, quality of regional diabetes care has achieved preliminary improvement.

p53 and p21 expression in precancerous lesions and carcinomas of the uterine cervix: overexpression of p53 predicts poor disease outcome. Gynecol Oncol 2001; 83:348-54. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Abnormal expression of the p53 and p21(waf1/cip1) tumor suppressor genes has been observed in a variety of human tumors, but little is known about its expression during cervical tumorigenesis. To identify the potential implications of both genes in the development of cervical carcinoma and explore the clinical importance of changes in gene expression, we assessed the levels of both proteins in precancerous lesions and carcinomas of the cervix. METHODS In our study, 10 low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL), 35 high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), 12 microinvasive carcinomas, and 103 invasive carcinomas were evaluated. The expression of p53 and p21 was studied by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies specific for these proteins. RESULTS p21 was expressed in all samples of normal epithelium, LSIL, and HSIL, and the mean values of expression were 50.3, 42.5, and 44.5%, respectively. Conversely, the expression of p21 was significantly reduced in microinvasive (30.7%) and invasive carcinomas (9.9%). p53 nuclear staining was not detected in normal epithelium samples or LSILs, while 4 (11.4%) of 35 HSILs, 1 (8.3%) of 12 microinvasive carcinomas, and 38 (36.9%) of 103 invasive carcinomas were positive for p53. Compared with the results of the control group, precancerous lesions, and microinvasive carcinoma, the mean value of p53 expression (4.8%) in invasive carcinoma was significantly higher. Furthermore, p53 overexpression was significantly associated with advanced stage of the tumor (P < 0.001) [16/67 (23.9%) stage I, 15/28 (53.6%) stage II, and 7/8 (87.5%) stage III/IV]. In univariate analysis, p53 overexpression was a significant predictor of poor survival, whereas it had no independent influence on overall survival using the Cox regression method. Our data also revealed that no association between p53 immunostaining and p21 expression was found. CONCLUSIONS The trend of reduced p21 expression in microinvasive and invasive carcinomas suggests that p21 may play a tumor-suppressor function in neoplastic transformation in cervical epithelium and inactivation of p21 may be an early event in cervical carcinogenesis. Our results indicated that p53 overexpression was a significant predictor of poor disease outcome in univariate analysis. Moreover, significantly increased expression of p53 in advanced-stage cervical carcinoma implies that inactivation of p53 is associated with tumor progression. Finally, this study further supports the notion that induction of p21 expression can be regulated in a p53-independent manner.

Abstract
We describe a patient with gastric ulcer confirmed by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy who developed an acute Q wave myocardial infarction involving both the anterior and inferior wall shortly after the procedure. This life-threatening complication of gastroendoscopy was clearly demonstrated through studies of electrocardiogram, cardiac enzymes, echocardiogram and cardiac catherterization. We suggest that preventive measures should be implemented so that endoscopy can be performed under optimal conditions, especially for elderly patients with history of heart disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although antacids were ineffective in preventing serious gastrointestinal complications caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), many physicians in Taiwan still prescribe antacids concomitantly with NSAIDs. A survey of an outpatient prescription database was performed to measure the extent of such a combination and to explore its associated factors. METHODS One month of the outpatient prescription data in the polyclinic of a medical center in Taiwan served to estimate the frequency of concomitant antacid prescription with NSAIDs. The age of patients, duration of NSAID prescriptions, concomitant prescription of corticosteroid or ulcer-healing drugs, and inter-departmental variations were compared between the NSAID prescriptions with and without antacids. RESULTS Antacids were present in 87.3% of prescriptions with NSAIDs but only in 34.4% of prescriptions without NSAIDs (P<0.001). The prescription of antacids was significantly associated with the prescription of NSAIDs. The age of patients and duration of NSAID prescriptions did not influence the co-prescription of NSAIDs and antacids. Significant inter-departmental variations were noted in which the surgeons and orthopedic doctors tended to co-prescribe antacids with NSAIDs more often than the internists. CONCLUSION The physicians in Taiwan tended to prescribe NSAIDs together with antacids. The rationality of this co-prescription deserves further investigation.

Abstract
P300 has been demonstrated abnormal for a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders, and heritability has been proposed. We analyzed the event-related potentials for three DRD2 genotype groups in 134 normal young females. The results demonstrate that there is no association for DRD2 genotype and P300 components. Our negative findings in normal subjects suggest association demonstrated for P300 latency and the DRD2 allele may be disease dependent.

Novel SNP at the common primer site of exon IIIa of FGFR2 gene causes error in molecular diagnosis of craniosynostosis syndrome. AMERICAN JOURNAL OF MEDICAL GENETICS 2001; 102:282-5. Abstract
Most mutations in Crouzon, Pfeiffer, and Apert syndromes are in the extracellular, third immunoglobulin-like domain and adjacent linker regions (exons IIIa and IIIc) of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene. Using the published primers for PCR, a patient with Crouzon syndrome was found to be homozygous for a mutation that results in a Q289P amino acid substitution in FGFR2. Two additional patients; one with Apert syndrome and P253R mutation, the other with Pfeiffer syndrome and S267P mutation, also appeared to be homozygous. Using a new primer located 146 bp 5' of exon IIIa for PCR followed by sequencing revealed an A to G polymorphism at -62 [corrected] position of exon IIIa. All three patients were heterozygous for both the mutation and the polymorphism. These results indicate that the polymorphism and the mutation are not on the same chromosome. The single nucleotide polymorphism is located at the second to the last base of the 3' end of the published primer. This primer mismatch caused the failure of amplification of the normal chromosome and thus, the apparent homozygosity. The frequency of this novel polymorphism was determined to be 0.03 by studying 326 chromosomes from the general population. We propose that a new primer should be used for mutational analysis of exon IIIa of FGFR2 to avoid misdiagnosis caused by primer mismatch.

Abstract
We report the first frame-shift truncation mutation in a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded subunit II of cytochrome c oxidase (COXII). The mutation was identified by temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TTGE) followed by direct DNA sequencing in an infant who died at 12 days of age following a course of apnea, bradycardia, and severe lactic acidosis. The patient had a twin brother who died at two days of age of similar course. The mutation, 8042delAT, produced a truncated protein that was 72 amino acids shorter than the wild type protein. The mutant protein, missing one third of the amino acid residues at the C-terminal essential for hydrophilic interaction with cytochrome c, ligand binding to CuA and Mg, and the formation of proton and water channels, apparently has devastating effects on mitochondrial respiratory function.

Abstract
To understand antibiotic usage in primary care units in Taiwan after the institution of national health insurance, we collected all prescriptions for one week in March each year from 1996 to 1999 from out-patient clinics of randomly sampled public health stations located in various parts of Taiwan. We sampled 114 health stations with 40,891 patient-visits and 68,386 diagnoses made in 1996; 154 health stations were sampled with 53,992 patient-visits and 99,466 diagnoses in 1997; 166 health stations were sampled with 49,112 patient-visits and 96,161 diagnoses in 1998; and 162 health stations were sampled with 46,976 patient-visits and 93,641 diagnoses in 1999. The percentages of total patient-visits that resulted in antibiotic treatment were 14.2%, 12.5%, 14.1% and 13.0% in the four time periods, respectively. Among patient-visits, patient group under the age of 11 received the highest percentage of antibiotic treatment. Common cold was the most frequent diagnosis for which antibiotic was prescribed during the four time periods, accounting for 32.3% of total antibiotic prescriptions. Among patients with the diagnosis of common cold, 31.3% received antibiotic treatment, and the highest figure was among pediatric patients (<16 year of age). Penicillins, cephalosporins and macrolides were the most commonly prescribed classes of antibiotics. They accounted for 35.4%, 26.5% and 21.6% of all prescribed antibiotics in these four study periods. From this study, it was found that, after institution of the national health insurance system, antibiotics are still very commonly used in primary care units in Taiwan and still seem to be overused.

Left atrial and ventricular ball thrombi complicating rheumatic heart disease with combined mitral and aortic stenosis. Echocardiography 2001; 18:159-61. Abstract
A 42-year-old woman with chronic mitral stenosis was admitted for progressive dyspnea, palpitation, and weakness of lower extremities. Echocardiography revealed rheumatic, thickened, and stenotic mitral and aortic valves, and two free-floating ball thrombi were detected in the left atrium and ventricle, respectively. She died suddenly the next day, probably due to mitral or aortic outflow obstruction by the ball thrombi. We believe that the occurrence of free-floating ball thrombi in both the left atrium and left ventricle concomitantly has never been reported.

Abstract
The mutation spectrum of the glucose 6-phosphatase (G6Pase) gene in Chinese patients with type 1a glycogen-storage disease of Taiwan was studied by PCR/RFLP, temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis, and direct DNA sequencing methods. In addition to the two most prevalent mutations, 727G --> T (44.4%) and R83H (36.1%), that were detected by RFLP analysis, five other mutations, 341delG, 933insAA, Q104X, I341N, and H119L were identified. The frameshift mutations (341delG and 933insAA) and the nonsense mutation (Q104X) that produce truncated proteins are predicted to be disease-causing. The missense mutation, I341N, occurring in the last transmembrane domain of the ER-bound enzyme, retains a small amount of residual activity of approximately 10%. Except for R83H, the mutations have been described only in Asians. H119L, however, is of particular interest because of the essential role of the catalytic histidine of phosphohydrolase. This amino acid is believed to be involved in the formation of the phosphoryl-enzyme intermediate during catalysis. The patient who was compound heterozygous for 727G --> T and H119L mutations had essentially no G6Pase activity in her liver biopsy. This observation is consistent with the importance of H119L in catalysis.

Abstract
We determined whether fragmentation of genomic DNA, apoptosis, occurs during deciduomal regression in pseudopregnant hamsters and the effect of progesterone on the apoptotic processes. Artificially induced deciduoma were obtained on different days of pseudopregnancy and separated into mesometrial and antimesometrial tissues. The deciduomal cell cycle progression and population profiles of both sides were compared by flow cytometry. The proportion of sub-G1 peak, which was correlated with the apoptotic cells, were about 10% on day 8 and reached to 40% in both tissues on day 10. Exogenous progesterone treatment by daily injection (2 mg; s.c.) on and after day 8 reduced the percentage of low molecular weight DNA in both tissues on day 10 and day 12 as compared to the nontreated control one, respectively. The appearance of DNA ladder was also delayed at least 24 h by progesterone administration. The intensity of DNA fragmentation was more pronounced in antimesometrial deciduoma. In situ 3'-end labeling of apoptotic cells further substantiated the apoptotic process. The apoptotic cells first appeared in the luminal region in antimesometrial deciduoma on day 8 and spreaded all over the entire deciduomal tissue on day 10. Progesterone treatment stimulated deciduomal proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression, maintained deciduoma until day 14 and retarded the differentiation and regeneration of the uterine epithelium.

High-resolution finite element models with tissue strength asymmetry accurately predict failure of trabecular bone. J Biomech 2000; 33:1575-83. Abstract
The ability to predict trabecular failure using microstructure-based computational models would greatly facilitate study of trabecular structure-function relations, multiaxial strength, and tissue remodeling. We hypothesized that high-resolution finite element models of trabecular bone that include cortical-like strength asymmetry at the tissue level, could predict apparent level failure of trabecular bone for multiple loading modes. A bilinear constitutive model with asymmetric tissue yield strains in tension and compression was applied to simulate failure in high-resolution finite element models of seven bovine tibial specimens. Tissue modulus was reduced by 95% when tissue principal strains exceeded the tissue yield strains. Linear models were first calibrated for effective tissue modulus against specimen-specific experimental measures of apparent modulus, producing effective tissue moduli of (mean+/-S.D.) 18.7+/-3.4GPa. Next, a parameter study was performed on a single specimen to estimate the tissue level tensile and compressive yield strains. These values, 0.60% strain in tension and 1.01% strain in compression, were then used in non-linear analyses of all seven specimens to predict failure for apparent tensile, compressive, and shear loading. When compared to apparent yield properties previously measured for the same type of bone, the model predictions of both the stresses and strains at failure were not statistically different for any loading case (p>0.15). Use of symmetric tissue strengths could not match the experimental data. These findings establish that, once effective tissue modulus is calibrated and uniform but asymmetric tissue failure strains are used, the resulting models can capture the apparent strength behavior to an outstanding level of accuracy. As such, these computational models have reached a level of fidelity that qualifies them as surrogates for destructive mechanical testing of real specimens.

Reward deficiency syndrome: a biogenetic model for the diagnosis and treatment of impulsive, addictive, and compulsive behaviors. J Psychoactive Drugs 2000; 32 Suppl:i-iv, 1-112. Abstract
The dopaminergic system, and in particular the dopamine D2 receptor, has been implicated in reward mechanisms. The net effect of neurotransmitter interaction at the mesolimbic brain region induces "reward" when dopamine (DA) is released from the neuron at the nucleus accumbens and interacts with a dopamine D2 receptor. "The reward cascade" involves the release of serotonin, which in turn at the hypothalmus stimulates enkephalin, which in turn inhibits GABA at the substania nigra, which in turn fine tunes the amount of DA released at the nucleus accumbens or "reward site." It is well known that under normal conditions in the reward site DA works to maintain our normal drives. In fact, DA has become to be known as the "pleasure molecule" and/or the "antistress molecule." When DA is released into the synapse, it stimulates a number a DA receptors (D1-D5) which results in increased feelings of well-being and stress reduction. A consensus of the literature suggests that when there is a dysfunction in the brain reward cascade, which could be caused by certain genetic variants (polygenic), especially in the DA system causing a hypodopaminergic trait, the brain of that person requires a DA fix to feel good. This trait leads to multiple drug-seeking behavior. This is so because alcohol, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, nicotine, and glucose all cause activation and neuronal release of brain DA, which could heal the abnormal cravings. Certainly after ten years of study we could say with confidence that carriers of the DAD2 receptor A1 allele have compromised D2 receptors. Therefore lack of D2 receptors causes individuals to have a high risk for multiple addictive, impulsive and compulsive behavioral propensities, such as severe alcoholism, cocaine, heroin, marijuana and nicotine use, glucose bingeing, pathological gambling, sex addiction, ADHD, Tourette's Syndrome, autism, chronic violence, posttraumatic stress disorder, schizoid/avoidant cluster, conduct disorder and antisocial behavior. In order to explain the breakdown of the reward cascade due to both multiple genes and environmental stimuli (pleiotropism) and resultant aberrant behaviors, Blum united this hypodopaminergic trait under the rubric of a reward deficiency syndrome.

Evaluating the protective role of the olivocochlear bundle against acoustic overexposure in rats by using Fos immunohistochemistry. J Neurol Sci 2000; 177:104-13. Abstract
Efferent inhibition on the cochlea is suggested as a possible function of the olivocochlear bundle (OCB). Substantial evidence supports the finding that the OCB may protect the inner ear from noise-induced damage. However, there is relatively less known about the effects of noise on the central auditory transmission compared to the effects on the periphery. In the present animal study, two experimental paradigms were designed to analyze the influence of OCB lesion on the central auditory transmission following acoustic overexposure. In order to evaluate the animal's auditory function, its hearing threshold and the tone-evoked Fos expression shown in auditory nuclei were examined. Fos is a protein product of proto-oncogene c-fos. Via appropriate acoustic stimulation, Fos expression reveals the activated neuronal elements along the ascending auditory pathway. Thus, in experiment 1, no exposure sound was introduced and therefore no significant differences were shown in hearing thresholds and Fos expression among all rats, regardless of the status of their OCB. This result indicates that, without acoustic overexposure, OCB lesion caused no significant effect on brainstem auditory transmission. In contrast, in experiment 2, rats were exposed to continuous 8 kHz tones at 85 dB sound pressure level (SPL). A significantly increasing threshold was observed in rats with OCB lesion following an exposure period of 5 or 10 days. In addition, Fos expression was invisible first in rats with OCB lesion following 5-day exposure and almost no Fos expression could be examined in all rats after 10-day exposure. Taken together, the present data demonstrate that damaging the OCB renders an animal more easily vulnerable to acoustic damage than that of rat with intact OCB, and then reduces its cochlear activities, which eventually leads to increasing difficulty to induce tone-evoked Fos expression along the ascending auditory pathway.

Impaired vascular dynamics in normotensive diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin: tapered T-tube model analysis. J Theor Biol 2000; 204:371-80. Abstract
This study is to explore the changes of arterial mechanical properties in streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats, based on the exponentially tapered T-tube model. Rats given STZ 65 mg kg(-1)i.v. are compared with untreated weight- and age-matched controls. A high-fidelity pressure sensor and electromagnetic flow probe measured pulsatile pressure and flow waves in the ascending aorta, respectively. Diabetic rats exhibit isobaric vasodilatation that is characterized by an increase in cardiac output and no significant changes in aortic pressure. Total peripheral resistance of diabetic rats is lower than that of weight- and age-matched controls. Diabetic rats have higher total peripheral compliance (2.86+/-0.70 microl mm Hg(-1)) than do weight- (1.77+/-0.34 microl mm Hg(-1)) and age-matched (1.87+/-0.69 microl mm Hg(-1)) controls. Aortic characteristic impedance is reduced from 0.017+/-0.003 mm Hg min kg ml(-1)in weight- and 0.020+/-0.004 mm Hg min kg ml(-1)in age-matched controls to 0.010+/-0.004 mm Hg min kg ml(-1)in diabetic rats. Moreover, diabetic rats show shorter wave transit time in lower body circulation (17.86+/-1.91 ms) than do weight- (20.45+/-1.91) and age-matched (23.05+/-2.04 ms) controls. Under isobaric vasodilatation, the decreased resistance and increased compliance in peripheral circulation suggest that the contractile dysfunction of the smooth muscle cells may occur in resistance arterioles in diabetes. With unaltered aortic pressure, an impairment in aortic distensibility of STZ-diabetic rats is manifest on the reduced wave transit time rather than on the diminished aortic characteristic impedance.

Effects of food restriction on mechanical properties of arterial system in adult and middle-aged rats. J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci 1999; 54:B441-7. Abstract
The effects of food restriction on the mechanical properties of the vasculature were determined in Long-Evans male rats with different ages. Rats that began food restriction at the ages of 6 months and 12 months were fed on alternate days for 6 months. Rats at the ages of 12 and 18 months were referred to as adult and middle-aged rats and were anesthetized and thoracotomized. The exponentially tapered T-tube model was employed to relate pulsatile pressure and flow signals measured in the ascending aorta. In each age group, food restriction elicited a decrease in body weight as well as basal heart rate but showed no significant change in cardiac output. Arterial blood pressure, total peripheral resistance, and aortic characteristic impedance were not affected by food restriction in middle-aged rats. However, adult food-restricted rats exhibited lower mean arterial blood pressure (99.1 +/- 3.1 mmHg) than did adult ad libitum-fed rats (110.7 +/- 3.0 mmHg). Total peripheral resistance was reduced from 0.645 +/- 0.045 mmHg-min-kg/ml in adult ad libitum-fed rats to 0.492 +/- 0.030 mmHg-min-kg/ml in adult food-restricted rats. Moreover, aortic characteristic impedance of adult food-restricted rats (0.014 +/- 0.001 mmHg-min-kg/ml) was lower than that of adult ad libitum-fed rats (0.024 +/- 0.002 mmHg-min-kg/ml). Neither age nor diet exerted effects on wave transit time and produced no changes in aortic distensibility. In conclusion, food restriction may elicit significant changes in the mechanical properties of both Windkessel vessels and resistance arterioles in adult rats, but not in middle-aged rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A unique requirement for the molecular diagnosis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) disorders is the ability to detect heteroplasmic mtDNA mutations and to distinguish them from homoplasmic sequence variations before further testing (e.g., sequencing) is performed. We evaluated the potential utility of temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TTGE) for these purposes in patients with suspected mtDNA mutations. METHODS DNA samples were selected from patients with known mtDNA mutations and patients suspected of mtDNA disorders without detectable mutations by routine analysis. Six regions of mtDNA were PCR amplified and analyzed by TTGE. Electrophoresis was carried out at 145 V with a constant temperature increment of 1.2 degrees C/h. Mutations were identified by direct sequencing of the PCR products and confirmed by PCR/allele-specific oligonucleotide or PCR/restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. RESULTS In the experiments using patient samples containing various amounts of mutant mtDNA, TTGE detected as little as 4% mutant heteroplasmy and identified heteroplasmy in the presence of a homoplasmic polymorphism. In 109 specimens with 15 different known mutations, TTGE detected the presence of all mutations and distinguished heteroplasmic mutations from homoplasmic polymorphisms. When 11% of the mtDNA genome was analyzed by TTGE in 104 patients with clinically suspected mitochondrial disorders, 7 cases of heteroplasmy ( approximately 7%) were detected. CONCLUSIONS TTGE distinguishes heteroplasmic mutation from homoplasmic polymorphisms and appears to be a sensitive tool for detection of sequence variations and heteroplasmy in patients suspected of having mtDNA disorders.

Atypical central neurocytoma: report of a case. J Formos Med Assoc 1999; 98:573-7. [PMID: 10502912] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [MESH Headings] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 02/14/2023] Open
Abstract
Central neurocytomas are rare, relatively benign intraventricular neoplasms composed of uniform round cells with neuronal differentiation. The majority of previously reported central neurocytomas did not recurr after tumor removal and the patients had favorable postoperative outcomes. Only a few cases with malignant histopathology or malignant behavior have been noted. Atypical central neurocytoma is a new entity that was first described in the literature in 1997. The tumors have been noted to exhibit a Ki-67 labeling index of 2% or more, or vascular proliferation, mitoses, and necrosis, or both. Atypical histologic findings are usually associated with a somewhat less favorable clinical course and requires postoperative radiotherapy. We report a unique case of a 33-year-old man with a large intraventricular central neurocytoma. The characteristic histopathologic picture, the immunoreactivity for both synaptophysin and neuron-specific enolase, and the ultrastructural features of neuronal differentiation distinguished it from ependymoma and oligodendroglioma. The mitotic activity (up to 3 mitoses/10 high power field) and the high percentage of Ki-67-staining tumor cells (labeling index, 5.0%) in our case were consistent with the atypical variant of central neurocytoma. The patient underwent craniotomy and partial resection of the tumor. Unfortunately, he died of hydrocephalus and brain edema, the next day.

Abstract
The kinetics of germanium dioxide (GeO2) in single dose and repeated exposures were investigated in male Wistar rats. In the single dose GeO2 (100 mg/kg BW, p.o.) exposure study, values of several kinetic parameters were shown as follows, a maximum concentration in serum of 15.5+/-0.7 microg/ml (mean +/- S.E.M.), an absorption half-life of 0.7+/-0.1 h (mean +/- S.E.M.), an elimination half-life of 2.3+/-0.5 h (mean +/- S.E.M.), a distribution of the central compartment Vp (3.1+/-0.3 1, mean +/- S.E.M.), and the apparent volume of distribution of the tissue compartment Vt (8.5+/-2.9 1, mean +/- S.E.M.). In the repeated exposure study, 730+/-92 mg GeO2 in 1 1 double-distilled H2O ( = 100 mg/kg/day) was given daily to rats for 4 weeks (p.o.). After sacrificing the rats, the analysis of tissue distribution showed that GeO2 was accumulated in some important organs or tissues in the body, especially the peripheral nerves and kidney. These results indicate that GeO2 could be absorbed rapidly but had a longer elimination half-life in rats. In addition, GeO2 was accumulated especially in the nerves and kidney following long-term exposure.

The suppressive effect of the olivocochlear bundle in rats studied by brainstem auditory evoked potentials following brainstem lesion. Kaohsiung J Med Sci 1998; 14:679-90. Abstract
The olivocochlear bundle (OCB) stems from the superior olivary complex in the brainstem and projects to the ipsilateral and contralateral cochlea. Several studies have suggested that the OCB has a suppressive effect on the inner ear by inhibiting the responses of the primary afferent fibers. To evaluate the action of OCB by more available measurement, radiofrequency lesion was applied to 30 Wistar rats which were divided into four groups, a sham group and another three groups with different OCB lesion sites. Consequent changes following OCB lesion were evaluated by measuring the brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs), which are considered to reflect the auditory brainstem afferent conduction. The amplitudes and latencies did not change significantly after sham treatment. However, although the BAEP peak latencies were not significantly altered after damaging the OCB, the amplitudes of the BAEP waves I to III were augmented significantly. These results indicate that increased neural activities were presented in the auditory nerves, cochlear nucleus and the superior olivary complex upon disinhibition of the OCB. Unilateral OCB lesions predominantly augmented BAEP waveform which was recorded ipsilaterally to the lesion side. Upon lesion of the midline OCB, BAEP recordings on either side showed significant increments in the amplitudes of waves I to III. These findings are compatible with those observed in the cat model and other rodents, and thus confirm that (1) OCB lesion leads to increased amplitudes in some BAEP peaks which were evoked by certain hyperactive auditory nuclei and tracts; and (2) BAEP measurment is a convenient and useful tool for assessing the OCB function.
