Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the extent to which different forms of eating behavior as assessed by the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire are related to facets of the Big Five personality domains. METHOD Respondents were 167 psychology students (126 females and 41 males) who volunteered for the study. RESULTS Body mass index (BMI) and gender had significant main effects on eating behaviors. These results were moderated by a significant BMI x Gender interaction on emotional eating. Eating behaviors were significantly related to the personality facets associated with Neuroticism and Conscientiousness. DISCUSSION The results are discussed with reference to previous research on eating behaviors and the nature of Neuroticism and Conscientiousness.

Abstract
A secondary school population of 805 11-16-year-olds reported lifetime prevalence of 31 physical symptoms and illness attitudes. Girls had a median of six symptoms (range 0-22) and boys five (range 0-22); 67 (8.3%) had 13 or more. Older girls reported more symptoms than younger ones. The excess of symptoms in older girls was related to reporting painful periods rather than simply to age or the menarche. High symptom scorers of both sexes had significantly higher scores on seven Illness Attitude Sub-Scales (Kellner, 1987), with more distress about illness and more treatment experience. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission, during the second of its Deep Dip campaigns, made comprehensive measurements of martian thermosphere and ionosphere composition, structure, and variability at altitudes down to ~130 kilometers in the subsolar region. This altitude range contains the diffusively separated upper atmosphere just above the well-mixed atmosphere, the layer of peak extreme ultraviolet heating and primary reservoir for atmospheric escape. In situ measurements of the upper atmosphere reveal previously unmeasured populations of neutral and charged particles, the homopause altitude at approximately 130 kilometers, and an unexpected level of variability both on an orbit-to-orbit basis and within individual orbits. These observations help constrain volatile escape processes controlled by thermosphere and ionosphere structure and variability.

Abstract
As part of an ongoing investigation into nosocomial Legionella infections at Stanford University Medical Center (SUMC), we applied the technique of restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) to determine strain differences among three species, including Legionella pneumophila, Legionella dumoffii, and Legionella micdadei. A total of 26 human and environmental water isolates from SUMC were selected for REA and compared with control strains that were not epidemiologically linked to SUMC. REA results were compared with results of alloenzyme typing, typing by monoclonal antibodies, and plasmid fingerprinting in all but L. micdadei strains. REA and alloenzyme typing showed that SUMC patient isolates were derived from distinct strains of three species. L. pneumophila strains from SUMC patients were genotypically identical to those isolated from potable water. REA was especially useful in proving that SUMC L. dumoffii patient isolates were derived from a single strain and that patients may have been exposed to a common source(s). REA typing correlated well with alloenzyme typing. These methods complement serologic typing of L. pneumophila and provide discriminating capability between strains of other Legionella species such as L. dumoffii, for which serologic types have not been identified. In addition, REA typing is somewhat easier to perform than alloenzyme typing and can be done in clinical laboratories.

Abstract
Misfolding and aggregation of host proteins are important features of the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, frontotemporal dementia and prion diseases. In all these diseases, the misfolded protein increases in amount by a mechanism involving seeded polymerization. In prion diseases, host prion protein is misfolded to form a pathogenic protease-resistant form, PrPSc, which accumulates in neurons, astroglia and microglia in the CNS. Here using dual-staining immunohistochemistry, we compared the cell specificity of PrPSc accumulation at early preclinical times post-infection using three mouse scrapie strains that differ in brain regional pathology. PrPSc from each strain had a different pattern of cell specificity. Strain 22L was mainly associated with astroglia, whereas strain ME7 was mainly associated with neurons and neuropil. In thalamus and cortex, strain RML was similar to 22L, but in substantia nigra, RML was similar to ME7. Expression of 90 genes involved in neuroinflammation was studied quantitatively using mRNA from thalamus at preclinical times. Surprisingly, despite the cellular differences in PrPSc accumulation, the pattern of upregulated genes was similar for all three strains, and the small differences observed correlated with variations in the early disease tempo. Gene upregulation correlated with activation of both astroglia and microglia detected in early disease prior to vacuolar pathology or clinical signs. Interestingly, the profile of upregulated genes in scrapie differed markedly from that seen in two acute viral CNS diseases (LaCrosse virus and BE polytropic Friend retrovirus) that had reactive gliosis at levels similar to our prion-infected mice. Accumulation of aggregates of misfolded protein in brain is a common feature of the damage seen in several neurodegenerative diseases including prion disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. In the present work three strains of prion disease differed in accumulation of the disease-associated prion protein (PrPSc) on neurons and astroglial cells. These patterns were first detectable in the thalamus at 40–60 days after inoculation. This coincided with initial detection of gliosis and PrPSc deposition, but was far in advance of clinical signs or spongiform pathology. In spite of the different patterns of cellular PrPSc deposition, these three strains had similar patterns of expression of a large number of genes known to be active during neuroinflammatory responses and gliosis. However, the gene upregulation in scrapie differed markedly from that seen in two neurovirulent viral diseases, which also had abundant glial responses similar to those observed with prion infection.

Abstract
To assess the prevalence of mutations associated with decreased antiretroviral drug susceptibility, specimens were tested from persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) during 1993-1998. Subjects were drug naive and were attending sexually transmitted disease clinics in 6 US cities. All were enrolled consecutively and had tested negative for HIV during the 2 years before enrollment. Plasma specimens from patients having >/=1 reverse transcriptase (RT) or primary protease mutation were tested phenotypically with a recombinant virus assay. Of 99 patients, 6 (6%) had mutations associated with zidovudine resistance, 2 (2%) had mutations associated with nonnucleoside RT inhibitor resistance, and 1 (1%) had a primary protease mutation. Overall, the prevalence of resistance-associated primary mutations was 5%, although high levels of decreased drug susceptibility (IC(50)s >/=10 times that of a reference virus) were observed in just 1%. These findings confirm the transmission of these mutations to drug-naive persons.

Abstract
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) 7 and 9 recognize nucleic acid determinants from viruses and bacteria and elicit the production of type I interferons and proinflammatory cytokines. TLR7 and TLR9 are similar regarding localization and signal transduction mechanisms. However, stimulation of these receptors has differing effects in modulating viral pathogenesis and in direct toxicity in the central nervous system (CNS). In the present study, we examined the potential of the TLR7 agonist imiquimod and the TLR9 agonist cytosine-phosphate-guanosine oligodeoxynucleotide (CpG-ODN) to induce neuroinflammation after intracerebroventricular inoculation. CpG-ODN induced a more robust inflammatory response than did imiquimod after inoculation into the CNS, with higher levels of several proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. The increase in cytokines and chemokines correlated with breakdown of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier and recruitment of peripheral cells to the CNS in CpG-ODN-inoculated mice. In contrast, TLR7 agonists induced a strong interferon β response in the CNS but only low levels of other cytokines. The difference in response to these agonists was not due to differences in distribution or longevity of the agonists but rather was correlated with cytokine production by choroid plexus cells. These results indicate that despite the high similarity of TLR7 and TLR9 in binding nucleic acids and inducing similar downstream signaling, the neuroinflammation response induced by these receptors differs dramatically due, at least in part, to activation of cells in the choroid plexus.

Abstract
Analgesic effect, labor outcome, safety and consumer satisfaction were compared in 170 primigravid women; 50 using TENS initially for pain relief, 20 using entonox, 50 pethidine + promazine and 50 lumbar epidural. 88% choosing epidural related it fully effective. 90% using entonox, 96% using TENS and 54% given pethidine + promazine found partial relief. 82% of patients given TENS and 80% given pethidine + promazine required additional analgesia. This was also needed by one of the 20 patients choosing entonox. Women using entonox alone had the shortest labors and women using lumbar epidural, the longest. Operative delivery was significantly more common in women receiving lumbar epidural. No significant inter-group differences were noted in cord pH or Apgar scores. Parturients and midwives both gave high consumer satisfaction ratings to all methods--except for pethidine + promazine, whose use must therefore be questioned. The analgesic efficacy of lumbar epidural outweighs any possible side effects. Entonox appears suited to those able to cope with the earlier part of labor, drug-free. Realization of the potential of TENS requires the design of machines specifically to cope with the quality of the pain of labor.

Abstract
IFN-gamma (IFN-gamma) has been shown to activate astrocytes to acquire immune functions. In this study the effect of IFN-gamma on murine astrocytes was investigated via microarray analysis. The activating effect of IFN-gamma on the astrocyte transcriptome showed predominance toward pathways involved in adaptive immunity, initiation of the immune response and innate immunity. Previously unknown astrocytic genes expressed included members of the p47 GTPases and guanine nucleotide binding protein (GBP) families. Down-regulatory effects of IFN-gamma stimulation were confined to pathways involved in growth regulation, cell differentiation and cell adhesion. This data supports the notion that astrocytes are an important immunocompetant cell in the brain and indicate that astrocytes may have a significant role in various infectious diseases such as Toxoplasmic Encephalitis and neurological diseases with an immunological component such as Alzheimer's and autoimmune disorders.

Abstract
Transwomen of color are disproportionately impacted by HIV and may have worse health outcomes than other populations. This analysis was conducted to examine structural factors associated with poor health outcomes among transwomen of color living with HIV in the San Francisco Bay Area (N = 159). Univariate and multivariable analyses were conducted to determine if structural factors were associated with poor HIV-related health outcomes. A majority of participants were Black or African American (110/159, 69.2%), 32 (20.1%) identified their primary race/ethnicity as Hispanic or Latino/a or Spanish, and 17 (10.7%) identified as another race/ethnicity. Transwomen of color in our sample faced extreme structural barriers, including residential transience, extreme low income, high prevalence of running out of money in the last six months, high rates of food insecurity, high prevalence of income via entitlement programs, engagement in sex work and other illicit activities for income. Unstable housing was the structural factor most consistently associated with poor health outcomes along the HIV care continuum and may explain engagement in other sources of income generation. Interventions are needed that go beyond the individual and health care-level to address needs for housing and economic opportunities to improve HIV care outcomes among transwomen of color living with HIV in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the frequency of mother-to-child transmission of human T-lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II) and to explore its association with breast-feeding. DESIGN Prospective study of children born to a cohort of HTLV-II-infected pregnant women and a cross-sectional study of older siblings of these children. METHODS Maternal sera were screened with an HTLV-I enzyme immunoassay that detects antibody to both HTLV-I and HTLV-II. Confirmatory serologic testing and viral typing were performed by Western blot, radioimmunoprecipitation assay, enzyme immunoassay with HTLV type-specific proteins, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of DNA from peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The presence of HTLV was evaluated in children by serial serologic and PCR testing. Molecular analysis of PCR products from infected mother-child pairs was performed by means of restriction fragment length polymorphism of HTLV-II long-terminal repeated sequences. RESULTS Twenty-nine HTLV-II-infected women were identified, and these 29 women had 30 pregnancies during the study. Of 28 live infants born to infected women, 19 were examined and none was infected with HTLV-II. Sixteen older children less than 10 years of age who were born previously to the infected women were also examined; two were infected with HTLV-II. One infected child was breast fed for 2 months and the second was not breast fed. The viral patterns of restriction fragment length polymorphism in the two infected children were distinct, but the viral pattern in each child was identical to that of her mother's virus, suggesting mother-to-child transmission. Overall, among examined children, 1 of 7 breast-fed children (14%; 95% confidence interval: 0, 40) and 1 of 28 children who were not breast fed (3.6%; 95% confidence interval: 0, 10) were infected with HTLV-II. CONCLUSION Mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-II occurs both with and without breast-feeding and at rates similar to those of HTLV-I. We believe that this is the first demonstration of mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-II in the absence of breast-feeding.

Abstract
Commonly used chemotherapeutic agents, specifically cytarabine and daunorubicin, can cause effusive-constrictive pericarditis. We describe a case of transient effusive-constrictive pericarditis in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia. This is the first case report of a patient with transient effusive-constrictive pericarditis due to chemotherapy.

Abstract
To reach the pressures and densities required for ignition, it may be necessary to develop an approach to design that makes it easier for simulations to guide experiments. Here, we report on a new short-pulse inertial confinement fusion platform that is specifically designed to be more predictable. The platform has demonstrated 99%+0.5% laser coupling into the hohlraum, high implosion velocity (411 km/s), high hotspot pressure (220+60 Gbar), and high cold fuel areal density compression ratio (>400), while maintaining controlled implosion symmetry, providing a promising new physics platform to study ignition physics.

Abstract
Attempted to determine, using a sample of students in Grades 3, 5, and 7, whether parent-child communication about AIDS and parent knowledge of AIDS predict children's knowledge, social attitudes, and worry regarding AIDS, partially replicating tests by Sigelman, Derenowski, Mullaney, and Siders (1993) of main effects, interaction, and potentiation models of parent-child socialization. Most parents had talked to their children about AIDS but many were susceptible to myths about HIV transmission. Child age was the strongest predictor of accurate knowledge and positive attitudes, but gender, ethnicity, and parent education also made modest contributions. Consistent with the potentiation model, parent knowledge of common transmission myths predicted child knowledge of those same myths (and willingness to interact with individuals who have AIDS as well) only when parent-child communication about AIDS was relatively extensively (and only when child rather than parent reported it). Findings suggest that both the quantity and quality of parental messages must be considered by socialization researchers but that parents may not be the primary socializers of knowledge and attitudes regarding AIDS and other health issues.

Abstract
Coupling between the lower and upper atmosphere, combined with loss of gas from the upper atmosphere to space, likely contributed to the thin, cold, dry atmosphere of modern Mars. To help understand ongoing ion loss to space, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft made comprehensive measurements of the Mars upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and interactions with the Sun and solar wind during an interplanetary coronal mass ejection impact in March 2015. Responses include changes in the bow shock and magnetosheath, formation of widespread diffuse aurora, and enhancement of pick-up ions. Observations and models both show an enhancement in escape rate of ions to space during the event. Ion loss during solar events early in Mars history may have been a major contributor to the long-term evolution of the Mars atmosphere.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that endothelin receptor antagonists may have therapeutic potential for the chronic treatment of heart failure. In the current study, the effects of an orally active mixed endothelin-A/endothelin-B (ETA /ETB ) receptor antagonist (enrasentan) were assessed in a model of cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction (spontaneously hypertensive stroke prone rats) maintained on a high-salt/high-fat diet. Echocardiography was used to quantify cardiac performance and left ventricular dimensions. Enrasentan (1,200 and 2,400 parts per million in the high-salt/high-fat diet) had no significant effects on body weight and systolic blood pressure. However, increases in heart rate were not observed in the enrasentan-treated groups at 12 weeks (p < 0.05). Enrasentan-treated groups exhibited significantly improved survival (90-95% vs. 30% [control rats] at 18 weeks; p < 0.001). Enrasentan treatments also increased stroke volume (at 8, 12, and 16 weeks) and cardiac index (at 8 and 16 weeks) 33-50% and 45-63%, respectively. Enrasentan treatments reduced the relative wall thickness (14-27% at 8 and 12 weeks), ratio of left ventricular mass to body weight (20% at 12 weeks), and ratio of terminal heart weight to body weight (16-23%, p < 0.05). Finally, circulating aldosterone concentration (54-57%) and proANF fragment (33%) were reduced in enrasentan-treated groups (54-57% and 33%, respectively). Mixed ETA /ETB receptor antagonism improves cardiac performance and attenuates ventricular remodeling and premature mortality in an aggressive hypertension model.

Abstract
Introduction: Despite the potential of social media to influence public health and generate
insights, the process of monitoring and analyzing the dissemination of
health care messages on social media has been described as difficult and in
need of improvement. Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe and demonstrate a reproducible
methodology for cataloging and analyzing health care–related social media
comments and provide insight into how clinicians and members of the general
public respond to health care messaging on social media. Methods: We collected social media comments related to the American Dental
Association’s 2016 “Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline for the Use
of Pit-and-Fissure Sealants” between April 10, 2017, and October 31, 2017,
from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit, and online message boards for the
New York Times, FiveThirtyEight, and Dentaltown. Using
data provided in the comments, we conducted engagement analysis as well as
content, network, and sentiment analysis across 8 categories. Results: We collected 671 comments. Among our findings, Facebook (472 of 671) was the
most popular platform among commentators; almost half of all comments (335
of 671) aligned with the recommendations of the 2016 American Dental
Association sealants guideline; clinicians were more likely than the general
public to like a comment that suggested an improvement to the guideline; and
>75% of comments (521 of 671) were supported by anecdotal evidence. Conclusion: As the prevalence of anecdotes on social media suggests, the likelihood of
falsehoods spreading on social media is high. Insights gleaned from the
methodology described in this research could help combat the spread of such
misinformation by providing disseminators of health care messaging with
insight into their target audiences. Armed with this knowledge,
disseminators can craft health care messages that more effectively engage
clinicians and the general public. Knowledge Transfer Statement: The methodology used in this research provides a reproducible strategy for
tracking social media engagement with health care messages. Engagement
results can assist future delivery of health care messages to key
stakeholders and ensure better implementation and adoption of these
communications.

Abstract
Anatomic distances along retroperitoneal, inguinal, and infrainguinal segments of the vas deferens were measured in 14 formalin fixed cadavers and in 15 recently postmortem males. There were no significant differences in segment lengths between the two groups nor between the right and left vasa. Data from the recent postmortem group reveals a mean length of 5.83 +/- .65 cm to be gained from retroperitoneal mobilization of the vas deferens. This information is important to surgical decisions in cases of microsurgical repair of obstructive azoospermia resulting from damage to the inguinal segment of the vas deferens. Data on other vasal segment lengths is beneficial for planning repair in other complex cases of obstructive azoospermia as well.

Abstract
Body composition assessment is an integral feature of elite sport as optimization facilitates successful performance. This study aims to refine the use of B-mode ultrasound in the assessment of athlete body composition by determining suitable sites for measurement. 67 elite athletes recruited from the Human Performance Laboratory, University College Cork, Ireland, underwent dual measurement of body composition. Subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness at 7 anatomical sites were measured using ultrasound and compared to percentage body fat values determined using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. Multiple linear regressions were performed and an equation to predict percentage body fat was derived. The present study found subcutaneous adipose tissue depths at the triceps, biceps, anterior thigh and supraspinale sites correlated significantly with percentage body fat by X-ray absorptiometry (all p<0.05). Summation of the depths at these locations correlated strongly with percentage body fat by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (R²=0.879). The triceps, biceps, anterior thigh and supraspinale sites are suitable anatomical landmarks for the estimation of %BF using B-mode ultrasound. Use of B-mode ultrasound in the assessment of athlete body composition confers many benefits including lack of ionising radiation and its potential to be used as a portable field tool.
