The synthesis of a chemically reactive and polymeric luminescent gel

In the past, chemically reactive polymeric interfaces have been considered to be of potential interest for developing functional materials for a wide range of practical applications. Furthermore, the rational incorporation of luminescence properties into such chemically reactive interfaces could provide a basis for extending the horizon of their prospective utility. In this report, a simple catalyst-free chemical approach is introduced to develop a chemically reactive and optically active polymeric gel. Branched-polyethyleneimine (BPEI)-derived, inherently luminescent carbon dots (BPEI-CDs) were covalently crosslinked with pentaacrylate (5Acl) through a 1,4-conjugate addition reaction under ambient conditions. The synthesized polymeric gel was milky white under visible light; however, it displayed fluorescence under UV light. Additionally, the residual acrylate groups in the synthesized fluorescent gel allowed its chemical functionality to be tailored through facile, robust 1,4-conjugate addition reactions with primary-amine-containing small molecules under ambient conditions. The chemical reactivity of the luminescent gel was further employed for a proof-of-concept demonstration of portable and parallel 'ON'/'OFF' toxic chemical sensing (namely, the sensing of nitrite ions as a model analyte). First, the chemically reactive luminescent gel derived from BPEI-CDs was covalently post-modified with aniline for the selective synthesis of a diazo compound in the presence of nitrite ions. During this process, the color of the gel under visible light changed from white to yellow and, thus, the colorimetric mode of the sensor was turned 'ON'. In parallel, the luminescence of the gel under UV light was quenched, which was denoted as the 'OFF' mode of the sensor. This parallel and unambiguous 'ON'/'OFF' sensing of a toxic chemical (nitrite ions, with a detection limit of 3 μM) was also achieved even in presence of other relevant interfering ions and at concentrations well below the permissible limit (65 μM) set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, this chemically reactive luminescent gel could be of potential interest in a wide range of basic and applied contexts.

First operation in SPIDER and the path to complete MITICA

The requirements of ITER neutral beam injectors (1 MeV, 40 A negative deuterium ion current for 1 h) have never been simultaneously attained; therefore, a dedicated Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was set up at Consorzio RFX (Padova, Italy). The NBTF includes two experiments: SPIDER (Source for the Production of Ions of Deuterium Extracted from Rf plasma), the full-scale prototype of the source of ITER injectors, with a 100 keV accelerator, to investigate and optimize the properties of the ion source; and MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the entire injector, devoted to the issues related to the accelerator, including voltage holding at low gas pressure. The present paper gives an account of the status of the procurements, of the timeline, and of the voltage holding tests and experiments for MITICA. As for SPIDER, the first year of operation is described, regarding the solution of some issues connected with the radiofrequency power, the source operation, and the characterization of the first negative ion beam.

Synthesis of Dual-Functional and Robust Underwater Superoleophobic Interfaces

Fish-scale-mimicked super oil-repelling wettability that functions under water has emerged as an important avenue for developing various functional materials. Mainly, polymeric hydrogel, brittle metal oxides, and electrostatic multilayers have been utilized for synthesizing an artificial underwater superoleophobic interface, and most of these reported artificial bioinspired wettabilities are likely to be compromised under practically relevant severe settings. Moreover, a design of a dual-functional fish-scale-mimicked interface that would be capable of separating water-soluble organic pollutants, in addition to the eco-friendly removal of different forms of contaminated oils under severe settings, could be highly useful in addressing globally recognized severe water pollution problems. In this report, a dual-functional underwater superoleophobic membrane is introduced for simultaneous removal of  contaminated dyes and oil/oily phase, where graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were strategically integrated with naturally abundant and environmentally friendly cotton fibers by adopting mussel-inspired chemistry. The synthesized membrane was found to exhibit fish-scale-mimicked nonadhesive underwater superoleophobicity, and this super oil repellency remained unaffected even after prolonged exposures to various practically relevant harsh chemical and physical conditions. Moreover, this material was capable of rapid (within 2 min) adsorption of water-soluble cationic organic dyes with high adsorption capacity (136 mg/g for methylene blue), following linear pseudo-second-order kinetics. The biomimicked extreme oil repellency was exploited for separating different forms (bulk and emulsion) of oil/oily (both sedimenting and floating) contaminants with high separation efficiency (above 98%), and the immobilized GO in the biomimicked membrane parallely allowed cationic organic dyes (methylene blue and crystal violet) to be removed from the aqueous phase through a single-step gravity-driven filtration process. The performance of simultaneous removal of cationic dyes and oil/oily contaminants remained unaffected even under various practically relevant severe settings including extremes of pH, sea water, river water, and so forth. Furthermore, the dual-functional biomimicked membrane was repetitively (10 times) used for successful separation of both the contaminated cationic dye and oil/oily phase from the aqueous phase, without affecting the separation efficiency. This simple approach is likely to provide a facile basis for addressing the problem of water pollution under practically relevant diverse and severe settings.

Role of radiological imaging and interventions in management of Budd-Chiari syndrome

Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a clinical condition resulting from impaired hepatic venous drainage, in which there is obstruction to the hepatic venous outflow at any level from the small hepatic veins to the junction of the inferior vena cava and the right atrium leading to hepatic congestion. The diagnosis of BCS is based on imaging, which can be gathered from non-invasive investigations such as ultrasonography coupled with venous Doppler, triphasic computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Apart from diagnosis, various interventional radiology procedures aid in the successful management of this syndrome. In this article, we present various imaging features of BCS along with various interventional procedures that are used to treat this diverse condition.

A sulphonated carbon dot-chitosan hybrid hydrogel nanocomposite as an efficient ion-exchange film for Ca2+ and Mg2+ removal

We have developed a hybrid hydrogel nanocomposite film via conjugation of oxidised carbon dots synthesized from 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid with chitosan. The potential applicability of the film was then successfully tested for the removal of Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions from solution.

Functionalized graphene oxide quantum dot-PVA hydrogel: a colorimetric sensor for Fe²⁺, Co²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions

Functionalized graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs)-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hybrid hydrogels were prepared using a simple, facile and cost-effective strategy. GOQDs bearing different surface functional groups were introduced as the cross-linking agent into the PVA matrix thereby resulting in gelation. The four different types of hybrid hydrogels were prepared using graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, ester functionalized graphene oxide and amine functionalized GOQDs as cross-linking agents. It was observed that the hybrid hydrogel prepared with amine functionalized GOQDs was the most stable. The potential applicability of using this solid sensing platform has been subsequently explored in an easy, simple, effective and sensitive method for optical detection of M(2+) (Fe(2+), Co(2+) and Cu(2+)) in aqueous media involving colorimetric detection. Amine functionalized GOQDs-PVA hybrid hydrogel when put into the corresponding solution of Fe(2+), Co(2+) and Cu(2+) renders brown, orange and blue coloration respectively of the solution detecting the presence of Fe(2+), Co(2+) and Cu(2+) ions in the solution. The minimum detection limit observed was 1 × 10(-7) M using UV-visible spectroscopy. Further, the applicability of the sensing material was also tested for a mixture of co-existing ions in solution to demonstrate the practical applicability of the system. Insight into the probable mechanistic pathway involved in the detection process is also being discussed.

Ethylene diamine mediated cobalt nanoparticle studded graphene oxide quantum dots with tunable photoluminescence properties

The present study demonstrates ethylene diamine mediated in situ synthesis of cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co₃O₄NPs) studded on graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) showing reversible on/off fluorescence switching.

Paper carbon dot based fluorescence sensor for distinction of organic and inorganic sulphur in analytes

In this work a paper carbon dot (PCDs) based fluorescence sensor was developed which can distinguish between the organic and inorganic sulphur in analytes.

β-Cyclodextrin and calix[4]arene-25,26,27,28-tetrol capped carbon dots for selective and sensitive detection of fluoride

In this work we have designed a novel system based on carbon dots prepared from chitosan gel capped with β-cyclodextrin and calix[4]arene-25,26,27,28-tetrol for sensitive and selective detection of fluoride ions in aqueous media. Fluorescent carbon dots prepared from chitosan gel when capped with β-cyclodextrin and calix[4]arene-25,26,27,28-tetrol results in quenching of its fluorescence intensity. Introduction of F(-) ions to carbon dots capped with β-cyclodextrin and calix[4]arene-25,26,27,28-tetrol system results in enhancement and restoration of fluorescence intensity leading to detection of F(-) ion. Minimum detection limit was determined to be ∼6.6 μM. The detection is selective as with other halide ions i.e. Cl(-), Br(-) and I(-) and hydroxyl ion (OH(-)), there is observed decrease of fluorescence intensity. A possible mechanism to justify the observation is also discussed in the paper.
