Abstract
We report a numerical study, supplemented by phenomenological explanations, of "energy condensation" in forced 2D turbulence in a biperiodic box. Condensation is a finite size effect which occurs after the standard inverse cascade reaches the size of the system. It leads to the emergence of a coherent vortex dipole. We show that the time growth of the dipole is self-similar, and it contains most of the injected energy, thus resulting in an energy spectrum which is markedly steeper than the standard k{-5/3} one. Once the coherent component is subtracted, however, the remaining fluctuations have a spectrum close to k{-1}. The fluctuations decay slowly as the coherent part grows.

Abstract
We investigate high-Reynolds-number turbulence in dilute polymer solutions. We show the existence of a critical value of the Reynolds number, which separates two different regimes. In the first regime, below the transition, the influence of the polymer molecules on the flow is negligible, so they can be regarded as passively embedded in the flow. This case admits a detailed investigation of the statistics of the polymer elongations. The second state is realized when the Reynolds number is larger than the critical value. This regime is characterized by the strong back reaction of polymers on the flow. We establish some properties of the statistics of the stress and velocity in this regime and discuss its relation to the drag reduction phenomenon.

Abstract
Monosized (∼4 nm) diamond nanoparticles arranged on substrate surfaces are exciting candidates for single-photon sources and nucleation sites for ultrathin nanocrystalline diamond film growth. The most commonly used technique to obtain substrate-supported diamond nanoparticles is electrostatic self-assembly seeding using nanodiamond colloidal suspensions. Currently, monodisperse nanodiamond colloids, which have a narrow distribution of particle sizes centering on the core particle size (∼4 nm), are available for the seeding technique on different substrate materials such as Si, SiO2, Cu, and AlN. However, the self-assembled nanoparticles tend to form small (typically a few tens of nanometers or even larger) aggregates on all of those substrate materials. In this study, this major weakness of self-assembled diamond nanoparticles was solved by modifying the salt concentration of nanodiamond colloidal suspensions. Several salt concentrations of colloidal suspensions were prepared using potassium chloride as an inserted electrolyte and were examined with respect to seeding on SiO2 surfaces. The colloidal suspensions and the seeded surfaces were characterized by dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy, respectively. Also, the interaction energies between diamond nanoparticles in each of the examined colloidal suspensions were compared on the basis of the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. From these investigations, it became clear that the appropriate salt concentration suppresses the formation of small aggregates during the seeding process owing to the modified electrostatic repulsive interaction between nanoparticles. Finally, monosized (<10 nm) individual diamond nanoparticles arranged on SiO2 surfaces have been successfully obtained.

Abstract
We study properties of dilute polymer solutions. The probability density function (PDF) of polymer end-to-end extensions R in turbulent flows is examined. We show that if the value of the Lyapunov exponent lambda is smaller than the inverse molecular relaxation time 1/tau then the PDF has a strong peak at the equilibrium size R0 and a power tail at R>>R0. This confirms and extends the results of J. L. Lumley [Symp. Math. 9, 315 (1972)]. There is no essential influence of polymers on the flow in this regime. At lambdatau>1 the majority of molecules is stretched to the linear size R(op)>>R0, which can be much smaller than the maximal length of the molecules due to their back reaction.

Abstract
Strawberry (Fragaria) and raspberry (Rubus) are very popular crops, and improving their nutritional quality and disease resistance are important tasks in their breeding programs that are becoming increasingly based on use of functional DNA markers. We identified 118 microsatellite (simple sequence repeat-SSR) loci in the nucleotide sequences of flavonoid biosynthesis and pathogenesis-related genes and developed 24 SSR markers representing some of these structural and regulatory genes. These markers were used to assess the genetic diversity of 48 Fragaria and Rubus specimens, including wild species and rare cultivars, which differ in berry color, ploidy, and origin. We have demonstrated that a high proportion of the developed markers are transferable within and between Fragaria and Rubus genera and are polymorphic. Transferability and polymorphism of the SSR markers depended on location of their polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer annealing sites and microsatellite loci in genes, respectively. High polymorphism of the SSR markers in regulatory flavonoid biosynthesis genes suggests their allelic variability that can be potentially associated with differences in flavonoid accumulation and composition. This set of SSR markers may be a useful molecular tool in strawberry and raspberry breeding programs for improvement anthocyanin related traits.

Abstract
Low nitrogen availability is one of the main limiting factors for plant growth and development, and high doses of N fertilizers are necessary to achieve high yields in agriculture. However, most N is not used by plants and pollutes the environment. This situation can be improved by enhancing the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in plants. NUE is a complex trait driven by multiple interactions between genetic and environmental factors, and its improvement requires a fundamental understanding of the key steps in plant N metabolism—uptake, assimilation, and remobilization. This review summarizes two decades of research into bioengineering modification of N metabolism to increase the biomass accumulation and yield in crops. The expression of structural and regulatory genes was most often altered using overexpression strategies, although RNAi and genome editing techniques were also used. Particular attention was paid to woody plants, which have great economic importance, play a crucial role in the ecosystems and have fundamental differences from herbaceous species. The review also considers the issue of unintended effects of transgenic plants with modified N metabolism, e.g., early flowering—a research topic which is currently receiving little attention. The future prospects of improving NUE in crops, essential for the development of sustainable agriculture, using various approaches and in the context of global climate change, are discussed.

Abstract
RFLP analysis of some intra- and extra-genic polymorphic sites of Factor VIII (FVIII) and Factor IX (FIX) genes with relevant DNA probes or by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was carried out in Slavic populations from the European part of Russia and also in the native ethnic groups of Uzbekistan and Kazahstan. The allele frequencies for the HindIII (intron 19) and XbaI (intron 22) polymorphic sites (PSs) in the FVIII gene were very similar in the two populations studied, but different for the intron 13 (CA)n repeat. Significant variations in the TaqI (intron d) and DdeI (intron a) polymorphisms of the FIX gene were evident between the Russian and Asian populations. Two unusual alleles (4.35 and 4.2 kb) for the extragenic PS St14/TaqI were registered in Slavs and one new allele (380 bp) for the DdeI polymorphic site of FIX was discovered in both Asian populations. Altogether, 210 haemophilia A (HA) and 24 haemophilia B (HB) families were subjected to molecular studies. So far, 160 HA and 12 HB families have been found to be informative for DNA analysis. Carrier status was ascertained in 42 HA and 6 HB female relatives, and rejected in 52 and 10 of them, respectively. The origin of some HA and HB mutations was traced with relevant polymorphic markers in several at-risk families. Prenatal diagnosis was accomplished in 28 HA and three HB families, resulting in the identification of 20 affected male fetuses.

Abstract
Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), at early and later stages after local exposure of rats to 140 Gy 90Sr/90Y beta radiation, was found to stimulate recovery of damaged skin. The area of local radiation injuries (LRIs) and accelerated healing of radiation ulcers was obtained. Clinical evolution showed the high efficiency of the transplantations of autologous MSCs for the treatment of deep beam ulcers, usually refractive to standard conservative treatment. Analogous to our results in the rats the authors obtained promising results with the application of MSCs for the treatment of severe LRIs in two human patients. Their radiation ulcers showed complete healing after stem cell application. Thus, further developments should determine the best possible conditions for MSC use in LRI treatment.

Abstract
Unimorph heterostructures based on piezoelectric aluminum nitride (AlN) and diamond thin films are highly desirable for applications in micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems. In this paper, we present a new approach to combine thin conductive boron-doped as well as insulating nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) with sputtered AlN films without the need for any buffer layers between AlN and NCD or polishing steps. The zeta potentials of differently treated nanodiamond (ND) particles in aqueous colloids are adjusted to the zeta potential of AlN in water. Thereby, the nucleation density for the initial growth of diamond on AlN can be varied from very low (10(8) cm(-2)), in the case of hydrogen-treated ND seeding particles, to very high values of 10(11) cm(-2) for oxidized ND particles. Our approach yielding high nucleation densities allows the growth of very thin NCD films on AlN with thicknesses as low as 40 nm for applications such as microelectromechanical beam resonators. Fabricated piezo-actuated micro-resonators exhibit enhanced mechanical properties due to the incorporation of boron-doped NCD films. Highly boron-doped NCD thin films which replace the metal top electrode offer Young's moduli of more than 1000 GPa.

Abstract
Successful acclimatization and ex vitro rooting are among the key factors reducing the cost of micropropagated plants. We compared the survival of seven Russian cultivars of raspberry (Rubus idaeus) after rooting in vitro and ex vitro. Rooted shoots adapted to nonsterile conditions much better than nonrooted ones, with survival rates of 81%–98% versus 43%–76%, respectively. We studied the effects of different combinations of plant-growth regulators and gelling agents added to a proliferation medium on ex vitro rooting of primocane-fruiting raspberry cultivar “Atlant”. Reducing the agar concentration from 8 to 6.5 g/L increased the multiplication rate, but caused shoot hyperhydricity. The highest survival rate (97.2%) was observed for shoots grown in a medium containing 0.2 and 0.1 mg/L IBA, and gelled with 5 g/L agar and 0.2 g/L Phytagel. The microshoot height at the multiplication stage did not correlate with the plant growth during acclimatization. The obtained results can be used in the commercial micropropagation of the raspberry.

Abstract
We present comparative experimental and theoretical studies of the absorption and fluorescence spectra of the alkali-metal dimer molecules Cs(2) and RbCs immersed in a solid helium matrix, thereby extending our recent observations of Rb(2) in solid (4)He. The laser-excited molecular states are mostly quenched by the interaction with the He matrix. The quenching efficiently populates the second lowest excited state of the molecule, i.e., (1) (3)Π((u)) that is metastable in the homonuclear dimers. Molecular excitation and emission bands are modeled by calculating Franck-Condon factors that give a reasonable agreement with the experimental findings.

Abstract
The use of natural products that can serve as natural herbicides and insecticides is a promising direction because of their greater safety for humans and environment. Secondary metabolites of plants that are toxic to plants and insects-allelochemicals-can be used as such products. Woody plants can produce allelochemicals, but they are studied much less than herbaceous species. Meanwhile, there is a problem of interaction of woody species with neighboring plants in the process of introduction or invasion, co-cultivation with agricultural crops (agroforestry) or in plantation forestry (multiclonal or multispecies plantations). This review describes woody plants with the greatest allelopathic potential, allelochemicals derived from them, and the prospects for their use as biopesticides. In addition, the achievement of and the prospects for the use of biotechnology methods in relation to the allelopathy of woody plants are presented and discussed.

Abstract
Electrostatic self-assembly of diamond nanoparticles (DNPs) onto substrate surfaces (so-called nanodiamond seeding) is a notable technique, enabling chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of nanocrystalline diamond thin films on non-diamond substrates. In this study, we examine this technique onto differently polarized (either Al- or N-polar) c-axis oriented sputtered aluminum nitride (AlN) film surfaces. This investigation shows that Al-polar films, as compared to N-polar ones, obtain DNPs with higher density and more homogeneously on their surfaces. The origin of these differences in density and homogeneity is discussed based on the hydrolysis behavior of AlN surfaces in aqueous suspensions.

Abstract
Eukaryotic cells possess a sensible chemical compass allowing them to orient toward sources of soluble chemicals. The extracellular chemical signal triggers separation of the cell membrane into two domains populated by different phospholipid molecules and oriented along the signal anisotropy. We propose a theory of this polarization process, which is articulated into subsequent stages of germ nucleation, patch coarsening, and merging into a single domain. We find that the polarization time, t{epsilon}, depends on the anisotropy degree through the power law t{epsilon} infinity epsilon{-2}, and that in a cell of radius R there should exist a threshold value epsilon{th} infinity R{-1} for the smallest detectable anisotropy.

Abstract
We have observed bulk solidification of 4He induced by nucleation on positive alkali ions in pressurized superfluid helium. The ions are extracted into the liquid from alkali-doped solid He by a static electric field. The experiments prove the existence of charged particles in a solid structure composed of doped He that was recently shown to coexist with superfluid helium below the He solidification pressure. This supports our earlier suggestion that the Coulomb interaction of positive ions surrounded by a solid He shell (snowballs) and electrons trapped in spherical cavities (electron bubbles), together with surface tension, is responsible for the stability of that structure against melting. We have determined the density of charges in the sample by two independent methods.

Abstract
Two-dimensional turbulence generated in a finite box produces large-scale coherent vortices coexisting with small-scale fluctuations. We present a rigorous theory explaining the eta=1/4 scaling in the V is proportional to r(-eta) law of the velocity spatial profile within a vortex, where r is the distance from the vortex center. This scaling, consistent with earlier numerical and laboratory measurements, is universal in its independence of details of the small-scale injection of turbulent fluctuations and details of the shape of the box.

Abstract
We demonstrate that at long times the rate of passive scalar decay in a turbulent, or simply chaotic, flow is dominated by regions where mixing is less efficient. We examine two situations. The first is of a spatially homogeneous stationary turbulent flow with both viscous and inertial scales present. It is shown that at large times scalar fluctuations decay algebraically in time at all spatial scales. The second example explains chaotic stationary flow in a disk/pipe. The boundary region of the flow controls the long-time decay, which is algebraic at some transient times, but becomes exponential, with the decay rate dependent on the scalar diffusion coefficient, at longer times.
