Abstract
Estuaries are productive environments used by many fish as nursery grounds. The initial stages of fishes are highly vulnerable to (a)biotic factors, and anthropogenic pressures, influencing fish larvae assemblages along the estuary. Microplastics (MPs < 5 mm) are particularly dangerous to early life stages of fishes because their ingestion can induce gut blockage, limiting food intake or exposing organisms to contamination due to MPs capacity to absorb pollutants. Present work aimed to investigate the contamination of an urban impacted estuary (Douro estuary, NW Portugal) by MPs, and study the abundance and distribution of MPs and fish larvae in this estuary. Monthly sampling surveys were performed from December 2016 to December 2017, in nine stations along the estuary. Sub-surface planktonic horizontal trawls were performed to collect fish larvae and MPs. Planktonic samples were sorted, and fish larvae identified. MPs density was determined using a protocol optimized in our laboratory. A total of 1498 fish larvae belonging to 32 taxa were collected, with a mean density of 11.66 fish larvae 100 m-3. During the spring-summer period, it was observed the typical increase in the density and diversity of the larval assemblage. Diversity was generally low, with the high dominance of very few taxa, namely the common goby, Pomatoschistus microps. Different types of MPs were found, namely fibers, soft/hard plastic, colorful/transparent plastic, in a total of 2152 particles, with a mean density of 17.06 MPs 100 m-3. Hard MPs and fibers were the most predominant types, representing 83% of the total MPs collected. In some months the number of MPs surpassed the number of fish larvae, with an average ratio of 1.0 fish larvae:1.5 MPs. Such results are concerning, highlighting that a higher availability of MPs may facilitate their ingestion by fish and therefore increase possible impacts in these communities.

Abstract
Possible immunologic interaction between infection with human T lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), a retrovirus, and the intestinal parasite Strongyloides stercoralis was investigated in persons infected with one or both agents. This was done by examining the cytokine responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) to mitogens and Strongyloides antigen. PBMC of subjects infected with HTLV-1 spontaneously produced interferon (IFN)-gamma with levels that correlated inversely with serum IgE levels. HTLV-1-infected subjects also had poor interleukin (IL)-4 responses to mitogenic stimulation, unlike persons without HTLV-1 infection. It is postulated that the IFN-gamma produced by activated T cells in some HTLV-1-infected persons acts to down-regulate IL-4 with consequent reduction of serum IgE levels. The impaired IgE responses and other effects of IL-4 down-regulation may be contributing factors to more severe disease and impaired response to treatment of strongyloidiasis in some HTLV-1-infected persons.

Abstract
Dynamic energy budget models for growth of individual cockles (Cerastoderma edule) and mussels (Mytilus edulis) are adjusted and calibrated to the Oosterschelde by formulating and parametrizing their functional responses using an extensive set of field observations. The resulting model predictions fit the observations satisfactorily. Results indicate that food quality and the importance of detritus as a food source are site-specific as well as species-specific. Despite these differences in their calibrated parameter values, both species show a very similar functional response. Compared with other systems, however, the functional responses of mussels in the present study are clearly higher than those of mussels in other systems. This may be explained by the absence of intra-specific competition in the measurement set-up that was used, and therefore supports the idea that the generally small functional response of M. edulis is caused by intra-specific competition.

Abstract
Cloned T lymphocytes reactive with Borrelia burgdorferi proteins were isolated from a patient with chronic Lyme arthritis. All of the T cell clones which proliferated in response to Borrelia proteins were CD3 + CD4 + CD8 - TCR alpha beta + and HLA-DR restricted. One T cell clone (GN30) exhibited HLA-DR-restricted cytotoxic activity against antigen-presenting cells pulsed with Borrelia antigen. In response to Borrelia antigen, the T cell clones produced TNF-alpha, INF-gamma, and GM-CSF. There are at least three distinct spirochetal proteins recognized by the four T cell clones analyzed. Purified Borrelia proteins triggered the HLA-DR-restricted proliferative and cytotoxic responses, as well as lymphokine secretion by two of the T cell clones. The spirochetal protein which triggered the HLA-DR-restricted proliferative and cytotoxic activities of the T cell clone (GN30) isolated from synovial fluid is the 41 kd flagellar protein.

Abstract
In goats treated to induce superovulation, insemination at a predetermined time after the end of progestagen treatment leads to a low fertilization rate. To solve this problem we developed a new treatment based on the control of the occurrence of the endogenous LH peak with a GnRH antagonist (Antarelix). The first experiment was designed to determine the dose of LH required to mimic a spontaneous LH preovulatory discharge; the injection of 3 mg, i.v. of pLH induced a peak of the same amplitude and duration as the spontaneous peak. Subsequently, in the second experiment, we compared 2 doses of Antarelix (0.5 and 1 mg, sc) administered 12 h after sponge removal (9 goats/treatment group). The dose of 0.5 mg was selected for further experiments because it was effective in the inhibition of the endogenous LH peak and had no detrimental effect on the quality of embryos. In the final experiment, 48 goats received the new treatment and were inseminated (intrauterine) only once 16 h after LH injection; 41 were flushed and produced 5.3 +/- 4.5 (m +/- SD) transferable embryos. The developmental stage and the number of cells/embryo were within the range that has been reported for embryos produced with conventional treatments. In conclusion, with the described method, it is possible to inseminate goats at a predetermined time without decreasing the number of transferable embryos. This technique will encourage the development of embryo transfer within genetic programs, and it will be a valuable tool for the production of zygotes for gene transfer.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This paper is based on a Cochrane review published in The Cochrane Library, issue 4, 2002 (see www.CochraneLibrary.net for information) with permission from The Cochrane Collaboration. Cochrane reviews are regularly updated as new evidence emerges and in response to comments and criticisms, and The Cochrane Library should be consulted for the most recent version of the review. BACKGROUND GnRH agonists have been widely used in cycles of IVF. There are two types of GnRH agonist administration that can be used to lead to hypophysis desensitization in IVF cycles in the long protocol: one consisting of daily low doses of GnRH agonist and the other the administration of analogues in higher, long-acting doses (depot). The objective of this study is to compare the use of a single long-acting depot dose with that of daily GnRH agonist doses in IVF cycles. METHODS Relevant randomized controlled trials were identified by electronic search of the following databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information) and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register. Six studies, with a total of 552 women, were included and analysed. RESULTS The studies do not indicate that there is a statistically significant difference between the use of depot GnRH agonist and of daily GnRH agonist in the primary outcome, clinical pregnancy rates per woman [odds ratio (OR) 0.94, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.65-1.37]. However, there was sufficient evidence showing that the use of depot GnRH agonist for pituitary desensitization in IVF cycles increased the number of gonadotrophin ampoules [weighted mean difference (WMD) 3.30, 95% CI 1.27-5.34] and the duration of the ovarian stimulation (WMD 0.56, 95% CI 0.31-0.81), as compared with the use of daily GnRH agonist. CONCLUSIONS Although we recognize that the clinical pregnancy rates per woman are not the ideal primary outcome, we found no evidence of differences between the long protocols using depot or daily GnRH agonist for IVF cycles. However, the use of depot GnRH agonist is associated with increased requirements for gonadotrophins and a longer time needed for ovarian stimulation. If these differences could be shown to translate into economic benefit, depot GnRH agonist would increase the overall costs of IVF treatment.

Abstract
Chronic myelopathy associated with T-lymphotropic virus type I (HAM) has been described as an endemic disease in several areas of the world, meanwhile there are few papers describing the association between HAM and adult T cell leukemia-lymphoma. We report the case of a man that, after four years of progressive spastic paraparesis and neurogenic bladder, developed a clinical picture of a lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by dermal and systemic involvement, mimicking mycosis fungoides/Sézary syndrome.

Abstract
Pulmonary involvement in HTLV-I patients has been identified by several authors in Africa, Japan and Brazil. The objective of this controlled study is to establish an association between HAM and lymphocytosis in the bronchoalveolar fluid (BAL). Thirty-five adult patients with non-traumatic and non-tumoral myelopathy filled out a detailed historical survey and underwent a neurological examination, a thoracic radiological evaluation and a CSF examination. Of the patients in this sample, 22 were diagnosed with HTLV-I associated myelopathy and 13 had myelopathies with other etiologies. Lymphocytosis in the BAL fluid was detected in 18 (82%) of the HAM patients and in 2 (15%) of non-HAM patients. We concluded that the lung represents an important organ in the pathogenesis of HAM.

Abstract
The effect of peritoneal fluid (PF) on the human sperm acrosome reaction (AR) was tested. Sperm was pre-incubated with PF and the AR was induced by calcium ionophore A23187 and a neoglycoprotein bearing N-acetylglycosamine residues (NGP). The AR induced by calcium ionophore was inhibited 40% by PF from controls (PFc) and 50% by PF from the endometriosis (PFe) group, but not by PF from infertile patients without endometriosis (PFi). No significant differences were found in the spontaneous AR. When the AR was induced by NGP, pre-incubation with PFc reduced (60%) the percentage of AR, while PFe and PFi caused no significant differences. The average rates of acrosome reactions obtained in control. NGP- and ionophore-treated sperm showed that NGP-induced exocytosis differed significantly between the PFc (11%) and PFe/PFi groups (17%), and the ionophore-induced AR was higher for PFi (33%) than PFc/PFe (25%). The incidence of the NGP-induced AR was reduced in the first hour of pre-incubation with PFc and remained nearly constant throughout 4 h of incubation. The present data indicate that PF possesses a protective factor which prevents premature AR.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Hormone replacement therapy with progestogen is known to have severe side effects or complications in certain patients. OBJECTIVE The goal of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of an alternative treatment regimen with a mensal pause using both transvaginal sonography (TVS) and endometrial biopsy to follow patients. METHODS A total of 30 postmenopausal women were treated with unopposed estrogen for 21 days each month followed by a regular pause of 9-10 days, and were studied prospectively for 18 months. The TVS measurements of endometrial thickness and biopsy of the endometrium were done on the 21st day of treatment and the 7th day of the pause at 6-month intervals throughout the study. RESULTS There was a significant decrease of proliferative activity at all three time points during the study (6, 12 and 18 months) when tested on the 7th pause day (PD7). The percentage of patients with hyperplasia without nuclear atypia and endometrial thickness > or =8mm was 32% at 6 months, but decreased to 22 and 19% at 12 and 18 months, respectively. All cases of hyperplasia regressed after the hormonal pause throughout the treatment period. CONCLUSIONS This study presents an alternative treatment regimen for select patients having side effects or complications from progestogen administration; however, studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of this regimen over longer time periods are necessary.

Abstract
Because the lack of specialized textbooks on the select and indication of basic exercises for physical conditioning programmes, an electromyographic study of the trapezius (upper portion) (TS) and the serratus anterior (lower portion) (SI) muscles in rowing exercises with middle and closed grip in three different modalities, upright, sitting and bent over was performed. The tests were carried out with 24 male volunteers, 18 to 25 years old, by using a two-channel TECA TE 4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes. For exercises execution, a supine bench, a straight board and a 1,20 m-long bar made of light wood were used. The results showed that TS acted preferentially with closed grip sitting and bent over modalities, and presented no difference among the grips for upright rowing. SI acted preferentially with closed grip in all modalities, however, with activity levels that do not justify its indication for physical conditioning programmes.

Abstract
The trapezius and serratus anterior muscles were studied in four modalities of rowing exercises executed with two grips, middle and closed, in comparison with the four different modalities of frontal-lateral cross, dumbbells exercise. It was used 24 male volunteers, 18 to 25 years old using a 2-channel TECA TE 4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes. The results showed that TS acted in a higher significant way in all the modalities of rowing than in the supine lateral raise, inclined supine lateral raise and reverse supine lateral raise, dumbbells exercices, and demonstrated no standing frontal-lateral cross, dumbbells. The SI acted more significantly difference among all the execution modalities of rowing and the inclined supine lateral raise, dumbbells exercises than in all the rowing exercises; even though the activity levels do not make us suggest them as an excellent group of exercises for the development of this muscle.

Abstract
Cellulite is a skin condition that significantly affects women, characterized by "holes" or depressions in the skin, affecting approximately 95% of women at some point in their lives. Cellulite often presents inflammatory symptoms such as increased skin temperature and hyperalgesia. Photobiomodulation, whether applied locally or systemically, has demonstrated important anti-inflammatory effects in various conditions. This study investigates the effects of local and systemic photobiomodulation on hip culottes temperature increases and hyperalgesia in patients with grades 2 to 4 cellulite. Cellulite assessment was carried out using detailed anamnesis, photographic records, algometry, and infrared thermography. Participants received randomized bilateral treatment with or without systemic irradiation using LED photobiomodulation on the hip culottes for four weeks, three times a week. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of photobiomodulation, especially locally applied, together or not with systemic irradiation, on cellulite hyperalgesia and skin temperature among 25 female participants. The group that received only LED treatment showed an increase in pain threshold of 8% and 20% on the right and left sides, respectively, while the group treated with LED + ILIB showed an increase in pain threshold of 32% on both sides. Local photobiomodulation produced a skin temperature decrease of 0.4 °C, while the combination of local and systemic irradiation produced an average skin temperature decrease of 1.2 °C. Our results clearly demonstrate a significantly beneficial effect of LED therapy for cellulite treatment, especially when administered in combination with mILIB, leading to a significant reduction of pain hypersensitivity and skin temperature, indicating a regional subcutaneous improvement of the inflammatory status.

Abstract
Because the lack of textbooks based on electromyographic studies in the area of exercises for physical conditioning, the authors proposed to study the trapezius (upper portion) (TS) and the serratus anterior (lower portion) (SI) muscles during the execution of four different modalities of rowing exercises with middle grip in 24 male volunteers, 18 to 25 years old. For the recordings, it was used a two-channel TECA TE 4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes. For the movements, a supine bench and a 120 cm-long bar made of low weight wood were used. The results showed that TS acted significantly in upright, sitting and inclined rowing, justifying its inclusion in physical conditioning programmes, while SI, in spite of acting preferentially in upright and sitting rowing, presented activity levels which do not justify its inclusion.

Abstract
Electromyographic activity of the trapezius muscle and serratus anterior muscle was analysed in 24 male volunteers using a 2-channel TECA TE 4 electromyograp, during the execution of four different modalities of military press exercises with middle grip. The trapezius acted preferentially in the modalities standing press behind neck; and sitting forward and press behind neck, while SI did not show any significative difference among the modalities. The high levels of action potentials with which TS and SI acted justify the inclusion of these exercises in physical programmes.

Forty-three CD3+4+8- TCR alpha beta+ Borrelia burgdorferi-reactive T cell clones isolated from the peripheral blood of a single patient with clinically active chronic Lyme arthritis were characterized. The spirochetal Ag recognized by 16 of these T cell clones was determined by reactivity with a panel of recombinant spirochetal Ag, which included the OspA, OspB, flagellin, Hsp60 and Hsp70 proteins. All three T cell clones reactive with heat shock proteins recognized a non-cross-reactive epitope unique to the spirochetal Ag. Analysis of the TCR V regions revealed preferential usage of V beta 5.1; 5 of 15 T cell clones that recognized an unidentified spirochetal Ag utilized this V beta gene segment. Most of the T cell clones recognized a given spirochetal Ag exclusively within the context of one HLA class II allele. However, two T cell clones, which recognized an unidentified Ag in the spirochetal lysate within the context of different HLA class II alleles, were both TCR V beta 5.1+, although each displayed a distinct alpha-chain. Moreover, in vitro incubation of this patient's PBMC with B. burgdorferi Ag resulted in a specific increase in the percentage of T cells expressing TCR V beta 5.1. These results indicate that B. burgdorferi has a V beta-selective factor influencing the cellular immune response in a patient with clinically active Lyme disease.

Abstract
Because the lack of specialized textbooks, the select of basic exercises for physical conditioning programmes is based on empirical knowledge. This fact led the authors to propose the study on electromyographic activity of the trapezius (upper portion) (TS) and the serratus anterior (lower portion) (SI) muscles in rowing exercises with closed grip in three different modalities. The tests were carried out with 24 male volunteers, 18 to 25 years old, by using a two-channel TECA TE 4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes. For exercises execution, a long bar made of light wood was used. TS acted significantly in the three different modalities, that is, upright, sitting and bent over, while SI acted preferentially in upright and sitting rowing exercises, justifying their inclusion as basic exercises in physical conditioning programmes.

Abstract
Based on the lack of electromyographic researches on sport and programmes of physical conditioning, we can say that it is necessary to reexamine some exercises routinely used in the programmes of physical conditioning. Thus, the trapezius and serratus anterior muscles were studied electromyographically so that we could evaluate the validity in some ways of execution of the frontal-lateral cross, dumbbells exercises for the development of these muscles. We analyzed 24 male volunteers, 18 to 25 years old, using a 2-channel TECA TE 4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes. For the execution of the exercise it was used a supine bench, a straight board and two bars of 40 cm made of light wood. The results showed that TS acted preferentially in standing modality and in the inclined supine modality, however with activity levels that do not justify its inclusion in physical fitness programmes.

Abstract
Electromyographic activity of the trapezius muscle and serratus anterior muscle was analysed in 4 different modalities of military press exercises, each of them with 2 grips: open and middle. It was analyzed 24 male volunteers using a 2-channel TECA TE 4 electromyograph and Hewlett Packard surface electrodes. The TS and SI muscles acted with high and very high activity in all the modalities of military press exercises. Statistically, they did not show significative difference in the performance of the exercises with open and middle grip, justifying the inclusion of this group of exercises with both grips for the physical conditioning programmes.

Abstract
Abstract
PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in distinguishing DCIS grades and identifying the presence of micro-invasive/invasive disease.
METHODS AND MATERIALS:
REB approved study with informed consent obtained from 70 women (age 36-84) scheduled for core-biopsy with results of 71 non-invasive/high-risk breast lesions. All patients underwent surgery and were assessed pre-operatively using diffusion weighted (DWI)-MRI. Lesion size, morphology and ADC values were recorded. The Kruskal Wallis or one-way ANOVA test and Pearson correlation coefficient were used to study the association between ADC values and the analyzed MRI lesion characteristics. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the ability of ADC values to predict the presence of invasion.
RESULTS:
Of 71 cases, 45.1% were imaged on a 3T magnet and 54.9% on 1.5 T. Final pathology demonstrated invasive cancer in 26.8%, micro-invasion in 18.3% and pure DCIS in 59.2%. On 3T, mean ADC value was 1.20 ×10-3 mm2/s ± 0.48 (SD) (range, 0.47 - 1.78 ×10-3 mm2/s) for non-high grade DCIS, 1.23 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.40 (SD) (range, 0.26 - 1.77 ×10-3 mm2/s) for high-grade DCIS, and 1.15 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.45 (SD) (range, 0.26 - 1.75 ×10-3 mm2/s) for invasive/microinvasive disease. On 1.5T, mean ADC value was 1.04 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.41 (SD) (range, 0.15 - 1.85 ×10-3 mm2/s) for non-high grade DCIS, 1.01 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.37 (SD) (range, 0.06 - 1.76 ×10-3 mm2/s) for high-grade DCIS, and 1.11 × 10-3 mm2/s ± 0.30 (SD) (range, 0.64 - 1.76 ×10-3 mm2/s) for invasive/microinvasive disease. Based on logistic regression analysis, mean ADC value was not a significant predictor for invasiveness using 1.5 T [OR = 2.6 (95% CI (0.409, 17.12)), p = 0.3] or 3T [OR = 0.4 (95% CI (0.076, 2.399)), p = 0.3]
CONCLUSION: Mean ADC acquired using a 1.5T or 3T MRI was unable to predict high-grade or invasive disease in biopsy-proven DCIS lesions. Further work is exploring voxel-based approaches that may better appreciate tumor heterogeneity and identify sub-regions of tumor with these higher risk features.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the number of lysosomes in glandular epithelia of the endometrioma capsule and endometrium from patients with or without endometriosis using a histochemical method (acidic phosphate determination) under light microscopy. METHOD We studied 31 selected patients with similar clinical features, except for the occurrence of menorrhagia enhanced in patients with endometriosis. All patients were submitted to video laparoscopic procedures and endometrial biopsies through hysteroscopy during the secretory phase. After surgery, the patients were divided into two groups for hysteroscopic data: GI--without endometriosis (control, n = 16) and GII--with endometriosis (n = 15). In GII, the lysosomes of the endometrioma were also counted (GIIa). RESULTS The GI sample was comprised only of endometrial biopsies. We found that the number of lysosomes in the topic endometrial tissue of patients with endometriosis was significantly larger than the number in endometrioma. Also, there were more lysosomes in the endometrium of patients with endometriosis than in endometrioma-bearing patients. CONCLUSION Our data suggest that variations in the number of lysosomes may underlie the pathogenesis of endometriosis.
