High peak power and energy scaling in the mid-IR chirped-pulse oscillator-amplifier laser systems

The paper introduces a new route towards the ultrafast high laser peak power and energy scaling in a hybrid mid-IR chirped pulse oscillator-amplifier (CPO-CPA) system, without sacrificing neither the pulse duration nor energy. The method is based on using a CPO as a seed source allowing the beneficial implementation of a dissipative soliton (DS) energy scaling approach, coupled with a universal CPA technique. The key is avoiding a destructive nonlinearity in the final stages of an amplifier and compressor elements by using a chirped high-fidelity pulse from CPO. Our main intention is to realize this approach in a Cr²⁺:ZnS-based CPO as a source of energy-scalable DSs with well-controllable phase characteristics for a single-pass Cr²⁺:ZnS amplifier. A qualitative comparison of experimental and theoretical results provides a road map for the development and energy scaling of the hybrid CPO-CPA laser systems, without compromising pulse duration. The suggested technique opens up a route towards extremely intense ultra-short pulses and frequency combs from the multi-pass CPO-CPA laser systems that are particularly interesting for real-life applications in the mid-IR spectral range from 1 to 20 μm.

Dissipative Raman solitons

A new type of dissipative solitons--dissipative Raman solitons--are revealed on the basis of numerical study of the generalized complex nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equation. The stimulated Raman scattering significantly affects the energy scalability of the dissipative solitons, causing splitting to multiple pulses. We show, that an appropriate increase of the group-delay dispersion can suppress the multipulsing instability due to formation of the dissipative Raman soliton, which is chirped, has a Stokes-shifted spectrum, and chaotic modulation on its trailing edge. The strong perturbation of a soliton envelope caused by the stimulated Raman scattering confines the energy scalability preventing the so-called dissipative soliton resonance. We show, that in practical implementations, a spectral filter can extend the stability regions of high-energy pulses.

Chaotic chirped-pulse oscillators

We present results of experimental investigation of the chaotic and quasi-periodic regime in the chirped-pulsed (dissipative soliton) Cr:ZnS and Cr:ZnSe mid-IR oscillators with significant third-order dispersion. The instability develops when the spectrum edge approaches resonance with a linear wave either due to power increase or by dispersion adjustment. In practice, this occurs when the spectrum edge reaches zero dispersion wavelength. The analysis suggests a three-oscillator chaos model, which is confirmed by numerical simulations. The regime is long-term stable and can be easily overlooked in similar systems. We show that chaotic regime is accompanied by a characteristic spectral shape and can be reliably recognized by using wavelength-skewed filters and by second-harmonic or two-photon absorption detectors.

Evolution of dissipative solitons in a fiber laser oscillator in the presence of strong Raman scattering

As recently revealed, chirped dissipative solitons (DSs) generated in a long cavity fiber laser are subject to action of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Here we present theoretical and experimental study of the DS formation and evolution in the presence of strong SRS. The results demonstrate that the rising noisy Raman pulse (RP) acts not only as an additional channel of the energy dissipation destroying DS, but on the contrary can support it that results in formation of a complex of the bound DS and RP of comparable energy and duration. In the complex, the DS affords amplification of the RP, whereas the RP stabilizes the DS via temporal-spectral filtering. Stable 25 nJ SRS-driven chirped DS pulses are generated in all-fiber ring laser cavities with lengths of up to 120 m. The DS with duration up to 70 ps can be externally dechirped to <300 fs thus demonstrating the record compression factor.

Generation of high fidelity 62-fs, 7-nJ pulses at 1035 nm from a net normal-dispersion Yb-fiber laser with anomalous dispersion higher-order-mode fiber

Fiber oscillators operating in the normal dispersion regime allow generating high energy output pulses. The best stability of such oscillators is observed when the intracavity dispersion is close to zero. Intracavity dispersion compensation in such oscillators can be achieved using a higher-order mode fiber, which substantially reduces the higher order dispersion compared to all-normal dispersion oscillators or oscillators using intracavity gratings for dispersion compensation. Using this approach, we are able to obtain relatively high energy pulses, with high fidelity. Our modeling based on an analytic approach for oscillators operating in the normal dispersion regime predicts that at intermediate pulse energies an almost flat chirp can be obtained at the oscillator output enabling good pulse compression with a grating compressor close to Fourier limited duration. Here, we present a mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber oscillator with a higher-order mode fiber operating in the net normal-dispersion regime, delivering 7.2 nJ pulses that can be dechirped down to 62 fs using a simple grating compressor.

High-power Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAG thin-disk oscillator in the positive dispersion regime

We demonstrate a self-starting Kerr-lens mode-locked (KLM) Yb:YAG thin-disk oscillator operating in the regime of positive intracavity group-delay dispersion (GDD). It delivers 1.7 ps pulses at an average power of 17 W and a repetition rate of 40 MHz. Dispersive mirrors compress the pulses to a duration of 190 fs (assuming sech2 shape; Fourier limit: 150 fs) at an average power level of 11 W. To our knowledge, this is the first KLM thin-disk oscillator with positive GDD. Output powers of up to 30 W were achieved with an increased output coupler transmission and intracavity GDD. We demonstrate increase of the pulse energy with increasing positive intracavity GDD, limited by difficulties in initiating mode-locking.

High-power 200 fs Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAG thin-disk oscillator

We demonstrate a power-scalable Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAG thin-disk oscillator. It delivers 200 fs pulses at an average power of 17 W and a repetition rate of 40 MHz. At an increased (180 W) pump power level, the laser produces 270 fs 1.1 μJ pulses at an average power of 45 W (optical-to-optical efficiency of 25%). Semiconductor-saturable-absorber-mirror-assisted Kerr-lens mode locking (KLM) and pure KLM with a hard aperture show similar performance. To our knowledge, these are the shortest pulses achieved from a mode-locked Yb:YAG disk oscillator and this is the first demonstration of a Kerr-lens mode-locked thin-disk laser.

Chirped dissipative soliton absorption spectroscopy

We present analytical theory of dissipative soliton absorption spectroscopy. A dissipative soliton formed in an all-normal-dispersion oscillator with a narrowband intracavity absorber acquires spectral features that follow the index of refraction of the absorber, as confirmed by numerical simulations and experimental evidence. In contrast to the soliton absorption spectroscopy in an anomalous dispersion regime, we anticipate resonant enhancement of a modulation signal near the pulse spectrum edges that results in an additional signal gain. We further show that the pulse acquires a nanosecond-long tail in the time domain and provide simple formula for estimation of its energy content.

Tm3+-doped CW fiber laser based on a highly GeO2-doped dispersion-shifted fiber

A novel all-fiber laser based on a highly GeO2-doped dispersion-shifted Tm-codoped fiber, pumped at 1.56 µm wavelength and lasing at 1.862 µm wavelength with a slope efficiency up to 37% was demonstrated. The single-mode Tm-doped fiber with the 55GeO2-45SiO2 core was fabricated for the first time by MCVD technique. The laser produces spectral side bands, resulting from the four-wave mixing owing to the shift of the zero-dispersion-wavelength of the fiber to the laser wavelength, thus, making it potentially particularly attractive for dispersion management and ultrashort pulse generation.

Energy scalability of mode-locked oscillators: a completely analytical approach to analysis

A completely analytical approach to analysis of energy-scalable ultrashort-pulse oscillators operating in both normal- and anomalous-dispersion regimes is developed. The theory, based on the approximated solutions of the generalized complex nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equation allows the problem to be reduced to a purely algebraic model, so that the oscillator characteristics are easy to trace and are completely characterized by only two parameters defining the so-called master diagram of the pulse energy scalability. The proposed theory covers all types of energy-scalable oscillators: all-normal-dispersion fiber, chirped-pulse and thin-disk solid-state ones and is validated by numerical simulations.

Soliton absorption spectroscopy

We analyze optical soliton propagation in the presence of weak absorption lines with much narrower linewidths as compared to the soliton spectrum width using the novel perturbation analysis technique based on an integral representation in the spectral domain. The stable soliton acquires spectral modulation that follows the associated index of refraction of the absorber. The model can be applied to ordinary soliton propagation and to an absorber inside a passively modelocked laser. In the latter case, a comparison with water vapor absorption in a femtosecond Cr:ZnSe laser yields a very good agreement with experiment. Compared to the conventional absorption measurement in a cell of the same length, the signal is increased by an order of magnitude. The obtained analytical expressions allow further improving of the sensitivity and spectroscopic accuracy making the soliton absorption spectroscopy a promising novel measurement technique.

Chirped dissipative solitons of the complex cubic-quintic nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equation

Approximate analytical chirped solitary pulse (chirped dissipative soliton) solutions of the one-dimensional complex cubic-quintic nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equation are obtained. These solutions are stable and highly accurate under condition of domination of a normal dispersion over a spectral dissipation. The parametric space of the solitons is three-dimensional, that makes theirs to be easily traceable within a whole range of the equation parameters. Scaling properties of the chirped dissipative solitons are highly interesting for applications in the field of high-energy ultrafast laser physics.

Cr : YAG chirped-pulse oscillator

We demonstrate chirped-pulse operation of a Cr : YAG passively mode-locked laser. Different operation regimes of the laser are extensively investigated in the vicinity of zero dispersion both experimentally and numerically. It is shown that for a given laser configuration, transition to the positive dispersion regime allows a 5-fold increase in the output pulse energy, which is otherwise limited by the onset of the multipulsing or 'chaotic' mode-locking. The output pulses have 1.4 ps duration and are compressible down to 120 fs in a 3 m piece of silica fiber, enabling supercontinuum generation in a nonlinear fiber. The spectrum shape and operation stability of the chirped-pulse regime depend strongly on the amount and shape of the intracavity dispersion. The numerical model predicts the existence of the minimum amount of the positive dispersion, above which the chirped-pulse regime can be realized. Once located, the chirped-pulse regime can be reliably reproduced and is sufficiently stable for applications.

High-order dispersion in chirped-pulse oscillators

The effects of high-order dispersion on a chirped-pulse oscillator operating in the positive dispersion regime were studied both theoretically and experimentally. It was found that odd and negative even high-order dispersions impair the oscillator stability owing to resonance with the dispersion waves, but can broaden the spectrum as in the case of continuum generation in the fibers. Positive fourth-order dispersion enhances the stability and shifts the stability range into negative dispersion. The destabilization mechanism was found to be a parametrical instability which causes noisy mode locking around zero dispersion.

Spatial-temporal structure of the femtosecond third harmonic generation in photonic-crystal fibers

We analyze the third harmonic generation by the supercontinuum at 1.5 mum in nonlinear-glass microstructured fibers. The numerical model includes the real field dynamics and allows analyzing the spectral as well as the temporal structure of the generated field. The calculated third harmonic and supercontinuum spectra are compared with the experiment in the SF6 glass PCF pumped by a femtosecond Cr(4+):YAG oscillator. The spectral structure of the third harmonic is composed of the 10-20 high-order modes excited at the phase matching points around 500-550 nm. The individual third harmonic modes have spectral widths of 2-4 nm. In the time domain, the third harmonic signal is a ~10-ps pulse with ps-scale slow modulation, containing subpicosecond ripples at its trailing edge.

Raman effects in the infrared supercontinuum generation in soft-glass PCFs

Measurements of the Raman gain spectra in the SF6 and SF57 highly-nonlinear-glasses demonstrated twice as high Raman shift in comparison with the fused silica. Numerical simulation predicted that a large Raman shift in combination with high nonlinearity can significantly reduce the required input pulse intensity for supercontinuum in these glasses, retaining the necessary degree of coherence. We found, that the degradation of the SC coherence due to Raman soliton jitter can be effectively controlled by a correct choice of input intensity and fiber length. Also it was found, that high degree of coherence correlates with the spectrum shape in the vicinity of the Raman threshold, providing an convenient experimental observable.
