Macromonomers as a Novel Way to Investigate and Tailor Silicon-Oxycarbide-Based Materials Obtained from Polymeric Preceramic Precursors

It has been shown that bifunctional monomers (D units), which are used to increase the carbon content in silicon oxycarbide precursors, can form volatile oligomers, thus affecting the amount of carbon available during the transition into the final material in the annealing process. Additionally, an uneven distribution of carbon-rich mers may lead to the formation of a free-carbon phase, instead of the incorporation of carbon atoms into the silicon matrix. In this study, a novel two-step approach was utilized. Firstly, a macromonomer containing a number of structural units with precise structure was synthesized, which was later polycondensed into a ceramic precursor. Chlorodimethylsilane modified 2,4,6,8-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane was used as a silicon oxycarbide precursor monomer containing both T and D structural units (i.e., silicon atoms bonded to three and two oxygen atoms, respectively), with well-defined interconnections between structural units. Such a macromonomer prevents the formation of small siloxane rings, and has a very limited number of possible combinations of structural units neighboring each silicon atom. This, after investigation using IR, XRD, TG and elemental analysis, gave insight into the effect of “anchoring” silicon atoms bonded to two methyl groups, as well as the impact of their distribution in comparison to the materials obtained using simple monomers containing a single silicon atom (structural unit).

Antibacterial composite hybrid coatings of veterinary medical implants

The aim of the work was to develop innovative antibacterial hybrid coatings applied on implants that are used for anastomoses of animals' long bones and to assess their physicochemical and biological properties. Plates made of the titanium alloy were covered with composite hybrid layers so as to protect the implant surface against corrosion and to enhance it with antibacterial properties.The hybrid coatings were obtained electrochemical oxidation and sol-gel. First, a layer of titanium nanotubes was applied to the implants surface through anodization. Next, the sol-gel method was used to create the second layer with silver nanoparticles. The microstructure examination of the materials was performed with the SEM. The phase composition analysis was carried out via the X-ray diffraction. The surface parameters (roughness, contact angle and free surface energy) were assessed. Biological studies of implants were conducted, including the analysis of degradation processes, cell response and bactericidal activity. The results confirmed that the hybrid antibacterial layers effectively protected the implant surface against scratches and corrosion and eliminated bacteria, which in turn would promote bone healing. The advantageous physicochemical and biological properties of metallic implants with hybrid composite layers raise hopes for their applicability in the veterinary treatment of bone fractures.

The use of calcium ions instead of heat treatment for β-1,3-glucan gelation improves biocompatibility of the β-1,3-glucan/HA bone scaffold

The aim of this study was to determine which procedure for β-1,3-glucan gelation - newly developed dialysis against calcium salt or described in the literature thermal technique - is more appropriate for fabrication of a biomaterial designed for bone tissue engineering applications. Thus, β-1,3-glucan/hydroxyapatite scaffolds were prepared based on two different methods and their physicochemical, microstructural, and biological properties were compared. Obtained results demonstrated that unlike thermal method-prepared β-1,3-glucan/hydroxyapatite material (glu/HAT), bone scaffold fabricated via dialysis method (glu/HA D) possessed rough surface resulting from the presence of CaCl₂ precipitates as proven by SEM and EDS analysis. As a consequence, glu/HA D scaffold released Ca²⁺ ions to the surrounding environment positively affecting osteoblast behaviour and biomineralization in vitro. Since glu/HA D material exhibited better bioactivity and biocompatibility compared to the glu/HA T scaffold, it may be concluded that the dialysis method is more suitable for β-1,3-glucan/hydroxyapatite biomaterial fabrication.

Growth and motility of human skin fibroblasts on multilayer strong polyelectrolyte films

Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) have found application in modifying material surfaces to make them adhesive or non-adhesive for animal cells. However, PEMs made of strong polyelectrolytes are not fully recognized in the literature. This study focuses on the interplay between the properties of PEM assembled from strong polyelectrolytes and cell adhesion and motility. Strong polycations (with quaternary ammonium groups) and a polyanion (with sulfonate groups) were obtained by modification of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). Two types of multilayer films were assembled from these PAH derivatives and used to investigate the behavior of human skin fibroblasts (HSFs). The effect of surface charge, hydrophobicity, and film thickness on adhesion of HSFs in a serum-containing medium was studied with immunofluorescence microscopy. The results showed that adhesion of HSFs was strongly depended on the chemical functions of the terminal layer, whereas the wettability was not important. The surface of PEM can be strongly cytophobic (the quaternary ammonium terminal groups) or strongly cytophilic (the sulfonate terminal groups). Finally, the motile activity of HSFs seeded on glass coated with a varying number of polymer layers was investigated. It was demonstrated using an in vitro model that coating the substrate with only two polymer layers can considerably increase the average speed of HSFs movement and stimulate cell migration into the wound.

Spectroscopic studies of electrophoretically deposited hybrid HAp/CNT coatings on titanium

Carbon nanotubes deposited on the surface of the metal can be used in a wide variety of applications for modern medicine including: sensors and sensor array devices, electrodes for neural system stimulation, scaffolds for improved healing process for bone defects. Additionally it is debated if deposited on the surface of e.g. endoprosthesis, CNT coating can significantly increase the strength of the tissue/bone joint and stimulate a fast integration of the implant and the tissue. The aim of this paper is the analysis of the electrophoretically deposited nanocomposite coating made of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes on the surface of titanium. The paper concentrates on the analysis of the layer's structure and its bioactivity properties. The nanocomposite films were investigated using Raman Spectroscopy as well as AFM and SEM microscopy. The measurements were conducted at every stage of layer preparation and after bioactivity test. Bioactivity was evaluated by in vitro test in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF, 37°C, for 30days). It was shown that hybrid HAp/CNT layers are very attractive materials for modification of the surface of metallic orthopedic implants.

Nanoheterogeneous multilayer films with perfluorinated domains fabricated using the layer-by-layer method

Nanoheterogenous ultrathin films containing perfluorinated domains were prepared via the layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic self-assembly method. The films are constructed from the amphiphilic cationic copolymer with perfluorinated side chains and poly(sodium styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The LbL process was optimized by the application of sonication which allowed linear growth of the film. The resulting film exhibited micellar structure with isolated fluorocarbon hydrophobic domains. The remarkable features of the films were their switchable wettability and friction properties. The obtained water-processable films can find a number of potential applications, e.g., as smart and low friction coatings.
