Cycloaddition of Phenyltriazolinedione with Carbazole-Alkynes and Yne-Carbamates to Access Diazacyclobutenes

Previously, we described the synthesis of stable, bicyclic examples of the rather rare diazacyclobutene (DCB) motif by means of a cycloaddition between triazolinediones and electron-rich thiolated alkynes. Here, we report the investigation of the cycloaddition of triazolinediones with related electron-rich yne-carbamates and carbazole-alkynes. Bicyclic DCBs arising from yne-carbamates were isolated in 8-65% yield, while those arising from carbazole-alkynes were isolated in 28-59% yield. Mechanistic studies and characterization of isolable byproducts shed light on the underlying issues leading to poor to moderate yields.

The Decomposition of Between and Within Effects in Contextual Models

In contextual studies, group compositions are often extracted from individual data in the sample, in order to estimate the group compositional effects [e.g., school socioeconomic status (SES) effect] controlling for interindividual differences in multilevel models. As the same variable is used at both group level and individual level, an appropriate decomposition of between and within effects is a key to providing a clearer picture of these organizational and individual processes. The current study developed a new approach with within-group finite population correction (fpc). Its performances were compared with the manifest and latent aggregation approaches in the decomposition of between and within effects. Under a moderate within-group sampling ratio, the between effect estimates from the new approach had a lesser degree of bias and higher observed coverage rates compared with those from the manifest and latent aggregation approaches. A real data application was also used to illustrate the three analysis approaches.

Quantal Response Techniques for Random Predictor Variables

The relationship between quantitative predictors and the probability of occurrence of one or more levels of a qualitative criterion can be analyzed by quantal response techniques. This paper presents two quantal response models. The first model treats the predictors as mathematical variables used as a stratification dimension; the second model uses random variables as predictors. Model II estimation techniques are presented for dichotomous and polychotomous criteria and for single and multiple predictors. The estimation techniques are illustrated with examples of the use of MMPI scale scores to predict the diagnostic classification of psychiatric patients and to model the actual diagnostic classifications of judges. These uses of quantal response methodology are contrasted with those of multiple linear regression and discriminant analysis. Many of the dependent variables collected in school settings are qualitative, e.g., the passing or failing of an item, the mastery or non-mastery of a task, the presence or absence of a behavioral trait or skill. When the interest of the researcher is to relate these variables to quantitative variables, quantal response procedures are potentially applicable for such educational data analyses.

HIDDEN DISPARITIES: HOW COURSES AND CURRICULA SHAPE OPPORTUNITIES IN MATHEMATICS DURING HIGH SCHOOL

Efforts to promote academic achievement by increasing access to courses, especially in mathematics, may mask educational disparities if variations in curriculum are not also monitored. A multi-dimensional description of students' mathematics curricula during high school was obtained from analyses of surveys, transcripts, and textbooks collected for a nationally representative study of adolescents during the mid-1990s. Few gaps in the number of years or credits in mathematics coursework were found. However, the quantity and cognitive challenge of instructional materials in textbooks adopted for those courses differed significantly both across and within mathematics tracks. Differences in the quality of curriculum accumulating during high school were also related to parents' education level. Reducing such gaps in learning opportunities would require teachers to supplement adopted instructional materials to ensure that all students receive a high quality mathematics curriculum.

Comparison of Colchicine, Dapsone, Triamcinolone, and Diphenhydramine Therapy for the Treatment of Brown Recluse Spider Envenomation

OBJECTIVE

To compare the efficacy of dapsone, diphenhydramine, colchicine, and intralesional triamcinolone in the treatment of brown spider bites. We used a purified venom that reproducibly produces a large eschar. To mimic real-life circumstances, all agents were administered following a 2-hour delay after envenomation. The animals were evaluated for the presence of coagulopathy to determine if the incidence of systemic findings correlated with the type of treatment.

DESIGN AND SETTING

In a research laboratory, 60 New Zealand white rabbits each received an intradermal injection of 20 microg of purified Loxosceles reclusa venom. The rabbits were divided into 5 groups of 12; a control group and 4 groups treated with a drug (either colchicine, triamcinolone, diphenhydramine, or dapsone). Measured end points included maximum eschar size as well as histologic grading of depth, inflammation, and thrombosis.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference with respect to eschar size (1-way analysis of variance, P = .003). There was no significant difference between any treatment with respect to presence or absence of ulcer, necrosis, large vessel vasculitis, or small vessel vasculitis. The only outcome of significance was that triamcinolone offered protection from thrombosis (chi2 likelihood ratio, P = .04). We also noted evidence of coagulopathy in all of the envenomated animals. The rabbits had grossly elevated activated partial thromboplastin time results, which were corrected with 1:1 mixing with normal rabbit plasma, suggesting an acquired factor deficiency. We did not detect an individual factor deficiency or a lupus anticoagulant.

CONCLUSIONS

In a rabbit model, none of the agents tested (dapsone, diphenhydramine, colchicine, and intralesional triamcinolone) had an effect on eschar size. Triamcinolone appeared to offer some protection against histologic evidence of thrombosis, but this protection did not translate into a difference in clinical outcome. All animals developed evidence of coagulopathy, regardless of treatment. The coagulopathy could be corrected by fresh rabbit plasma, suggesting an acquired factor deficiency.

Factors Influencing the Synthesis of Polysaccharide by Bradyrhizobium japonicum Bacteroids in Field-Grown Soybean Nodules

Certain strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum produce large quantities of polysaccharide in soybean ( Glycine max (L.) Merr.) nodules, and nodule polysaccharide (NPS) is different from that produced in culture. A previous survey of field-grown plants showed highly variable levels of NPS among field sites. To obtain clues about the possible function of NPS, we conducted two additional surveys of field-grown plants. The amount of polysaccharide in bulk samples of nodules was not associated with soil type, texture, slope, drainage, or any of the measured soil chemical properties except pH and [Ca]. Correlations with pH and [Ca] were positive and highly significant for two independent surveys involving a total of 77 sites in two years. In a preliminary comparison of high and low levels of Ca supplied to soybean plants grown in silica sand in a greenhouse, a high level of Ca (200 mg of Ca liter -1 ) increased the NPS level and increased the Ca content of the polysaccharide fraction. B. japonicum isolates from 450 nodules collected at 10 field sites in 1993 were used to form nodules on soybean plants grown in sand culture in a greenhouse in order to examine bacterial phenotype under controlled conditions. Results showed that the NPS level in the bulk nodule sample from any given site was a function of the proportion of nodule occupants that were capable of NPS synthesis. Thus, a higher soil pH and/or [Ca] may positively influence the survival of B. japonicum capable of synthesis of the nodule-specific polysaccharide.

Correlation of single-mode fiber radiation response and fabrication parameters

Statistically significant correlations have been established between certain fabrication parameters of matched clad, single-mode optical fiber waveguides and their response to an ionizing radiation dose of 2000 rad. The reCOVE:ry data measured at -35 degrees C following exposure have been fit to nth-order kinetic behavior where the adjustable parameters are the initial and permanent incremental losses (A(o) and A(f), respectively), the half-life of attenuation tau, and the order of kinetics n. The set of fibers chosen for analysis had Ge-doped silica cores. In fibers with Ge-F-doped silica clads, A(o) correlates with the concentration of Ge-doped into the fiber core; A(f) correlates with the ratio of oxygen to reagents used during core deposition; and tau and n correlate with a two-way interaction of core oxygen and fiber draw speed. In P-F-doped clad fibers, the P concentration has been found to correlate with the order of the kinetics of recovery.

Analysis Of Repeated Measures Data: A Simulation Study

This paper examines three statistical analysis procedures appropriate to repeated measures data -- classical mixed model analysis of variance, multivariate analysis of repeated measures, and analysis of covariance structures. These procedures differ in their assumptions concerning the covariances between the latent random variables in the model underlying the repeated measures. Simulated data were employed to investigate the effect that violating the assumptions of each model had on the following: Type I error rates; power of the test; degree of bias in the parameter estimates; and the relative efficiency of the estimates. The data indicate that with respect to Type I error rates and estimates of repeated measures effects, violations of assumptions for all three procedures produce similar results. Depending on the size of the repeated measures effects, there are differences between procedures concerning power. The estimates produced by analysis of covariance structures techniques tend to have smaller standard errors.
