Stabilization of Liner Implosions via a Dynamic Screw Pinch

Magnetically driven implosions are susceptible to magnetohydrodynamic instabilities, including the magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability (MRTI). To reduce MRTI growth in solid-metal liner implosions, the use of a dynamic screw pinch (DSP) has been proposed [P. F. Schmit et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 205001 (2016)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.117.205001]. In a DSP configuration, a helical return-current structure surrounds the liner, resulting in a helical magnetic field that drives the implosion. Here, we present the first experimental tests of a solid-metal liner implosion driven by a DSP. Using the 1-MA, 100-200-ns COBRA pulsed-power driver, we tested three DSP cases (with peak axial magnetic fields of 2 T, 14 T, and 20 T) and a standard z-pinch (SZP) case (with a straight return-current structure and thus zero axial field). The liners had an initial radius of 3.2 mm and were made from 650-nm-thick aluminum foil. Images collected during the experiments reveal that helical MRTI modes developed in the DSP cases, while nonhelical (azimuthally symmetric) MRTI modes developed in the SZP case. Additionally, the MRTI amplitudes for the 14-T and 20-T DSP cases were smaller than in the SZP case. Specifically, when the liner had imploded to half of its initial radius, the MRTI amplitudes for the SZP case and for the 14-T and 20-T DSP cases were, respectively, 1.1±0.3  mm, 0.7±0.2  mm, and 0.3±0.1  mm. Relative to the SZP, the stabilization obtained using the DSP agrees reasonably well with theoretical estimates.

Time-resolved and multiple-angle Thomson scattering on gas-puff Z-Pinch plasmas at pinch time

A 526.5 nm Thomson scattering diagnostic laser enables probing of the plasma conditions of neon gas-puff z-pinch implosions with temporal resolution. Splitting the laser into two 2.5 J pulses, both 2.3 ns in duration and separated by 4 ns, allows observation of sub-nanosecond time-resolved spectra for a total time of 7 ns. Collection optics were set at 90° and 30° to the laser, observing the same on-axis scattering volume with a radial extent of 0.4 mm. The spectra from both angles were collected by using the same streak camera, using a coupling system that allowed us to obtain temporal, spectral, and angular resolution in the same image. By comparing the ion-acoustic spectra from the two angles, we determined electron temperature and a range of possible electron densities. Measurements made in the 1-3 ns period before pinch time show best fit (determined by a least-squares method) electron densities of around 2 × 10¹⁹ cm^-3, increasing to 1.5 × 10²⁰ cm^-3 in the 3 ns following the start of the x-ray burst (t = 0 ns) from the pinch. The electron temperature increases from 300 eV to 500 eV at t = 0 ns before decreasing to below 300 eV after pinch time. With the present parameters (probe beam, collection angles, and electron temperature and density), this diagnostic method is too insensitive to electron density to provide more than a constraint on that parameter. Plasma regimes in which this technique could determine electron density with some precision are calculated.

Multi-angle multi-pulse time-resolved Thomson scattering on laboratory plasma jets

A single channel sub-nanosecond time-resolved Thomson scattering system used for pulsed power-driven high energy density plasma measurements has been upgraded to give electron temperatures at two different times and from two different angles simultaneously. This system was used to study plasma jets created from a 15 μm thick radial Al foil load on a 1 MA pulsed power machine. Two laser pulses were generated by splitting the initial 2.3 ns duration, 10 J, 526.5 nm laser beam into two pulses, each with 2.5 J, and delaying one relative to the other by between 3 and 14 ns. Time resolution within each pulse was obtained using a streak camera to record the scattered spectra from the two beams from two scattering angles. Analysis of the scattering profile showed that the electron temperature of the Al jet increased from 20 eV up to as much as 45 eV within about 2 ns by inverse bremsstrahlung for both laser pulses. The Thomson scattering results from jets formed with opposite current polarities showed different laser heating of the electrons, as well as possibly different ion temperatures. The two-angle scattering determined that the electron density of the plasma jet was at least 2 × 10¹⁸ cm^-3.

Technique for insulated and non-insulated metal liner X-pinch radiography on a 1 MA pulsed power machine

Broadband, high resolution X-pinch radiography has been demonstrated as a method to view the instability induced small scale structure that develops in near solid density regions of both insulated and non-insulated cylindrical metallic liners. In experiments carried out on a 1-1.2 MA 100-200 ns rise time pulsed power generator, μm scale features were imaged in initially 16 μm thick Al foil cylindrical liners. Better resolution and contrast were obtained using an X-ray sensitive film than with image plate detectors because of the properties of the X-pinch X-ray source. We also discuss configuration variations that were made to the simple cylindrical liner geometry that appeared to maintain validity of the small-scale structure measurements while improving measurement quality.

In vivo quantification of SPIO nanoparticles for cell labeling based on MR phase gradient images

Along with the development of modern imaging technologies, contrast agents play increasingly important roles in both clinical applications and scientific research. Super-paramagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles, a negative contrast agent, have been extensively used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), such as in vivo labeling and tracking of cells. However, there still remain many challenges, such as in vivo quantification of SPIO nanoparticles. In this work, an MR phase gradient-based method was proposed to quantify the SPIO nanoparticles. As a calibration, a phantom experiment using known concentrations (10, 25, 50, 100, 150 and 250 µg/ml) of SPIO was first conducted to verify the proposed quantification method. In a following in vivo experiment, C6 glioma cells labeled with SPIO nanoparticles were implanted into flanks of four mice, which were scanned 1-3 days post-injection for in vivo quantification of SPIO concentration. The results showed that the concentration of SPIO nanoparticles could be determined in both phantom and in vivo experiments using the developed MR phase gradients approach.

Evaluation of a New 1H/31P Dual-Tuned Birdcage Coil for 31P Spectroscopy

We introduce a new dual-tuned Hydrogen/Phosphorus (¹H/³¹P) birdcage coil, referred to as split birdcage coil, and evaluate its performance using both simulations and magnetic resonance (MR) experiments on a 3 T MR scanner. The proposed coil simplifies the practical matters of tuning and matching, which makes the coil easily reproducible. Simulations were run with the Finite Difference in Time Domain (FDTD) method to evaluate the sensitivity and homogeneity of the magnetic field generated by the proposed ¹H coils. Following simulations, MR experiments were conducted using both a phantom and human thigh to compare the proposed design with a currently available commercial dual-tuned flexible surface coil, referred to as flex surface coil, for signal to noise ratio (SNR) as well as homogeneity for the ³¹P coil. At regions deep within the human thigh, the split birdcage coil was able to acquire spectroscopic signal with a higher average SNR than the flex surface coil. For all regions except those close to the flex surface coil, the split birdcage coil matched or exceeded the performance of the flex surface coil.

A new catheter system for permanent percutaneous nephrostomy

A new catheter system is described for permanent percutaneous nephrostomy. The system allows the rapid, single stage placement of a large diameter drainage catheter. The technique avoids several problems associated with previous methods of percutaneous nephrostomy.
