Myofibrillogenesis Regulator-1 Regulates the Ubiquitin Lysosomal Pathway of Notch3 Intracellular Domain Through E3 Ubiquitin-Protein Ligase Itchy Homolog in the Metastasis of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Myofibrillogenesis regulator-1 (MR-1) is a multifunctional protein involved in the development of various human tumors. The study is the first to report the promoting effect of MR-1 on the development and metastasis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). MR-1 is upregulated in NSCLC and positively associated with poor prognosis. The overexpression of MR-1 promotes the metastasis of NSCLC cells by stabilizing the expression of Notch3-ICD (NICD3) in the cytoplasm through enrichment analysis, in vitro and in vivo experimental researches. And Notch3 signaling can upregulate many genes related to metastasis. The stabilizing effect of MR-1 on NICD3 is achieved through the mono-ubiquitin lysosomal pathway and the specific E3 ubiquitin ligase is Itchy homolog (ITCH). There is a certain interaction between MR-1 and NICD3. Elevated MR-1 can affect the level of ITCH phosphorylation, reduce its E3 enzyme activity, and thus lead to reduce the ubiquitination and degradation of NICD3. Interference with the interaction between MR-1 and NICD3 can increase the degradation of NICD3 and impair the metastatic ability of NSCLC cells, which is a previously overlooked treatment option in NSCLC. In summary, interference with the interaction between MR-1 and NICD3 in the progression of lung cancer may be a promising therapeutic target.

Anti-Tumor Potential of Post-Translational Modifications of PD-1

Programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) is a vital immune checkpoint molecule. The location, stability, and protein-protein interaction of PD-1 are significantly influenced by post-translational modification (PTM) of proteins. The biological information of PD-1, including its gene and protein structures and the PD-1/PD-L1 signaling pathway, was briefly reviewed in this review. Additionally, recent research on PD-1 post-translational modification, including the study of ubiquitination, glycosylation, phosphorylation, and palmitoylation, was summarized, and research strategies for PD-1 PTM drugs were concluded. At present, only a part of PD-1/PD-L1 treated patients (35-45%) are benefited from immunotherapies, and novel strategies targeting PTM of PD-1/PD-L1 may be important for anti-PD-1/PD-L1 non-responders (poor responders).

In Situ Constructing Ultrastable Mechanical Integrity of Single-Crystalline LiNi0.9 Co0.05 Mn0.05 O2 Cathode by Interior and Exterior Decoration Strategy

Planar gliding along with anisotropic lattice strain of single-crystalline nickel-rich cathodes (SCNRC) at highly delithiated states will induce severe delamination cracking that seriously deteriorates LIBs' cyclability. To address these issues, a novel lattice-matched MgTiO3 (MTO) layer, which exhibits same lattice structure as Ni-rich cathodes, is rationally constructed on single-crystalline LiNi0.9 Co0.05 Mn0.05 O2 (SC90) for ultrastable mechanical integrity. Intensive in/ex situ characterizations combined with theoretical calculations and finite element analysis suggest that the uniform MTO coating layer prevents direct contact between SC90 and organic electrolytes and enables rapid Li-ion diffusion with depressed Li-deficiency, thereby stabilizing the interfacial structure and accommodating the mechanical stress of SC90. More importantly, a superstructure is simultaneously formed in SC90, which can effectively alleviate the anisotropic lattice changes and decrease cation mobility during successive high-voltage de/intercalation processes. Therefore, the as-acquired MTO-modified SC90 cathode displays desirable capacity retention and high-voltage stability. When paired with commercial graphite anodes, the pouch-type cells with the MTO-modified SC90 can deliver a high capacity of 175.2 mAh g-1 with 89.8% capacity retention after 500 cycles. This lattice-matching coating strategy demonstrate a highly effective pathway to maintain the structural and interfacial stability in electrode materials, which can be a pioneering breakthrough in commercialization of Ni-rich cathodes.

Novel Bidirectional Output Ytterbium-Doped High Power Fiber Lasers: From Continuous to Quasi-Continuous

Traditional ytterbium-doped high-power fiber lasers generally use a unidirectional output structure. To reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of the fiber laser, we propose a bidirectional output fiber laser (BOFL). The BOFL has many advantages over that of the traditional unidirectional output fiber laser (UOFL) and has a wide application in the industrial field. In theory, the model of the BOFL is established, and a comparison of the nonlinear effect in the traditional UOFL and the BOFL is studied. Experimentally, high-power continuous wave (CW) and quasi-continuous wave (QCW) BOFLs are demonstrated. In the continuous laser, we first combine the BOFL with the oscillating amplifying integrated structure, and a near-single-mode bidirectional 2 × 4 kW output with a total power of above 8 kW is demonstrated. Then, with the simple BOFL, a CW bidirectional 2 × 5 kW output with a total power of above 10 kW is demonstrated. By means of pump source modulation, a QCW BOFL is developed, and the output of a near-single mode QCW laser with a peak output of 2 × 4.5 kW with a total peak power of more than 9 kW is realized. Both CW and QCW output BOFL are the highest powers reported at present.

Unexpected Noremestrin with a Sulfur-Bearing 15-Membered Macrocyclic Lactone from Emericella sp. 1454

Two previous unreported epipolythiodioxopiperazines of the emestrin family, namely, noremestrin A (1) and secoemestrin E (2), were successfully isolated from the fungal source Emericella sp. 1454. Employing comprehensive spectroscopic techniques, such as high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), along with NMR and electronic circular dichroism calculations, the chemical structures of compounds 1 and 2 were elucidated. Particularly noteworthy is the distinctive nature of noremestrin A, representing the inaugural instance of a noremestrin variant incorporating a sulfur-bearing 15-membered macrocyclic lactone moiety. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited weak cytotoxic activities against the human chronic myelocytic leukemia cell lines MEG-01 and K562.

Prognostic value of the baseline magnetic resonance score in patients with acute posterior circulation ischaemic stroke after mechanical thrombectomy

AIM

To investigate the prognostic value of the composite posterior circulation Acute Stroke Prognosis Early Computed tomography (CT) Score (ASPECTS)-Collaterals (pcASCO) score, which combines diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) posterior circulation ASPECTS (pcASPECTS) and the magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)-collateral circulation score at baseline among patients with acute posterior circulation ischaemic stroke after mechanical thrombectomy.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Patients with acute posterior circulation ischaemic stroke who underwent mechanical thrombectomy were analysed retrospectively. The DWI-pcASPECTS and MRA-collateral circulation score before treatment and the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 90 days after treatment were used as the endpoints. An mRS ≤2 was defined as a good prognosis, and an mRS ≥3 was defined as a poor prognosis. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyse independent predictors of functional outcome 90 days after mechanical thrombectomy.

RESULTS

Mechanical thrombectomy was performed in 57 patients; 38 patients had a good prognosis, 19 patients had a poor prognosis, and 33 patients were successfully recanalised. Univariate logistic regression found that National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score (OR: 1.18, p<0.001), pcASPECTS (OR: 1.91, p=0.028) and pcASCO score (OR: 0.51, p=0.001) were factors of good functional outcome. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve) analysis showed that the diagnostic efficiency of the NIHSS and pcASCO was better (AUC = 0.88, 0.83, p<0.05) than that of the pcASPECTS (AUC = 0.65). The prediction model was established by age, NIHSS, and pcASCO, and the diagnostic efficiency of the prediction model was better (AUC = 0.94).

CONCLUSIONS

The composite MR-pcASCO score can be used as an important predictor of the prognosis of patients with acute posterior circulation ischaemic stroke after mechanical thrombectomy.

10 kW tandem pumping fiber amplifier with good beam quality based on tapered ytterbium-doped fiber

In this paper, we established a high power tandem pumped fiber amplifier based on tapered ytterbium-doped fiber (TYDF). The TYDF is developed in-house with a core/inner cladding diameter of 30/250 µm at the small-core region and 48/400 µm at the large-core region. The key parameters of the amplifier in a co-pumped and counter-pumped configuration are experimentally investigated, such as slope efficiency, stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) threshold, and beam quality evolution. Up to 10.28 kW laser free of SRS or transverse mode instability is obtained from the counter-pumped amplifier, and the beam quality factor M2 is 2.29, which is significantly improved compared with the 48/400 µm uniform YDF. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average output power achieved so far based on the TYDF. This work could provide a solution for balancing the SRS suppression and high order modes control in high power tandem pumped YDF lasers.

Enhanced mechanical strength of a highly de-lithiated single-crystal Ni-rich cathode to suppress irreversible planar gliding

The mechanical properties of de-lithiated single-crystal Ni-rich cathodes are causing extensive concern. Here, we first show that the compression hardness of single crystal Ni-rich cathode particles decreases significantly at highly de-lithiated states by micro-compression testing. Thus, phase-boundary hardening was introduced to inhibit the planar gliding, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance.

Demonstration of 3kW × 2 ports bidirectional output oscillating-amplifying integrated fiber laser employing chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings for co-SRS suppression

Bidirectional output oscillating-amplifying integrated fiber laser (B-OAIFL) is a newly developed configuration with many advantages like compactness and good reliability. In this work, a B-OAIFL with a low time-stabilized threshold was constructed by employing a pair of side pump/signal combiner in the oscillating section, which demonstrates smooth temporal characteristics with no pulse detected by the photodetector at the output power level of only a few of tens Watts. We investigated the effect of side pumping on the Raman Stokes light and verified its contribution to mitigating the temporal-chaos-induced stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). The phenomenon of co-SRS caused by the mutual excitation of backward Stokes light from two amplifying sections under bidirectional pumping was first reported and studied. A pair of chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings (CTFBGs) were applied between the oscillating and amplifying sections to suppress the co-SRS, and the effect of the number of CTFBGs on the suppression of co-SRS was studied in detail experimentally. Finally, we successfully suppressed the co-SRS, and achieved a 3kW × 2 ports laser output, with a near-single-mode beam quality of M A 2∼1.3,M B 2∼1.4. In contrast, without the use of CTFBG, only a 2 kW-level output was obtained from each port, limited by co-SRS (with an SRS suppression ratio of less than 15 dB). The maximum output power of end A and end B is 3133 W and 3213 W, with the SRS suppression ratio of about 27.6 dB and 28.1 dB, respectively. No TMI features were observed under bidirectional pumping. The results demonstrate a significant potential for further power scaling based on this configuration. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest output power achieved based on the B-OAIFL.

Biomarkers-Aware Asymmetric Bibranch GAN with Adaptive Memory Batch Normalization for Prediction of Anti-VEGF Treatment Response in Neovascular Age-related Macular Degeneration

The emergence of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy has revolutionized neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Post-therapeutic optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging facilitates the prediction of therapeutic response to anti-VEGF therapy for nAMD. Although the generative adversarial network (GAN) is a popular generative model for post-therapeutic OCT image generation, it is realistically challenging to gather sufficient pre- and post-therapeutic OCT image pairs, resulting in overfitting. Moreover, the available GAN-based methods ignore local details, such as the biomarkers that are essential for nAMD treatment. To address these issues, a Biomarkers-aware Asymmetric Bibranch GAN (BAABGAN) is proposed to efficiently generate post-therapeutic OCT images. Specifically, one branch is developed to learn prior knowledge with a high degree of transferability from large-scale data, termed the source branch. Then, the source branch transfer knowledge to another branch, which is trained on small-scale paired data, termed the target branch. To boost the transferability, a novel Adaptive Memory Batch Normalization (AMBN) is introduced in the source branch, which learns more effective global knowledge that is impervious to noise via memory mechanism. Also, a novel Adaptive Biomarkers-aware Attention (ABA) module is proposed to encode biomarkers information into latent features of target branches to learn finer local details of biomarkers. The proposed method outperforms traditional GAN models and can produce high-quality post-treatment OCT pictures with limited data sets, as shown by the results of experiments.

Towards a tapered Yb-doped fiber-based narrow linewidth single-mode fiber laser with a high signal to Raman ratio

We demonstrate an all-fiber high-power narrow-linewidth fiber laser based on a homemade tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF). The laser performance is investigated and systematically compared with different seed powers and pump manners. The experimental results reveal that the injected seed power requires a trade-off designed to take into account the impact of spectral broadening, nonlinear effects, and transverse mode instability (TMI). Compared with the co-pump manner, the counter-pump manner performs well in inhibiting nonlinearities, spectral broadening, and improving the TMI threshold. Under the counter-pump manner, this narrow-linewidth T-YDF amplifier realized a 2.09 kW output power with a 3 dB spectral linewidth of ∼0.34 nm, a beam quality of M2∼1.28 and a high Raman suppression ratio over 53.5 dB, the highest reported power for such a T-YDF-based narrow-linewidth single-mode laser, to the best of our knowledge. This work provides a promising pathway towards implementing monolithic high-power narrow-linewidth single-mode fiber lasers.

Robust femtosecond-written chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings for Raman filtering in multi-kW fiber lasers

We present a robust chirped and tilted fiber Bragg grating (CTFBG) in a large-mode-area double-cladding fiber (LMA-DCF) written by a femtosecond (fs) laser. By implementing the fs-CTFBG into the output end of a high-power fiber laser for Raman filtering, a power handling capability of 4 kW is achieved with a Raman filtering ratio of ∼13 dB. To the best of our knowledge, this is the maximum handling power of a CTFBG for Raman filtering. The signal loss of the fs-CTFBG is 0.03 dB, which has little effect on the output laser beam quality. The air-cooled fs-CTFBG has a minimum temperature slope of 7.8°C/kW due to a self-annealing effect. This work proves the excellent performance of the fs-CTFBG, promoting the development of high-power CTFBGs.

Association between heavy metals exposure (cadmium, lead, arsenic, mercury) and child autistic disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

Studies have found that toxic heavy metals exposure could induce the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and is of epigenetic effect, which might be associated with the occurrence of Autistic Disorder (ASD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to elucidate the association between exposure to 4 heavy metals, cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic(As), and mercury (Hg), and the occurrence of ASD in children.

Methods

We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library, from their inception to October 2022, for epidemiological investigations that explore the association between exposure to Cd, Pb, As, or Hg and the occurrence of child ASD.

Results

A total of 53 studies were included, involving 5,054 individuals aged less than 18 (2,533 ASD patients and 2,521 healthy controls). Compared with the healthy controls, in hair and blood tests, concentrations of the 4 heavy metals were significantly higher in the ASD group than in the healthy control group, and the differences in Pb, arsenic and Hg were statistically significant (P < 0.05). In the urine test, concentrations of arsenic and Hg were significantly higher in the ASD group than in the healthy control group (P < 0.05), while the results of Cd and Pb were opposite to those of arsenic and Hg (P > 0.05). Subgroup analysis for geographic regions showed that ASD patients in Asia and Europe had higher concentrations of the 4 heavy metals, compared with the healthy controls, in which the differences in Pb, arsenic, and Hg were statistically significant (P < 0.05), while in North America, the healthy controls had higher Cd, arsenic, and Hg concentrations (P > 0.05).

Conclusion

Compared with the healthy control group, the ASD group had higher concentrations of Cd, Pb, arsenic, and Hg. These 4 heavy metals play different roles in the occurrence and progression of ASD. Moreover, there is significant heterogeneity among the included studies due to controversies about the study results among different countries and regions and different sources of detection materials. The results of this study firmly support the policies to limit heavy metals exposure, especially among pregnant women and young children, so as to help reduce the incidence of ASD.

[Colorectal cancer cells induce the formation of cancer-associated fibroblasts by activating the ERK signaling pathway in fibroblasts]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the mechanism by which conditioned medium of colorectal cancer cells promotes the formation of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs).

METHODS

Normal human colorectal fibroblasts (CCD-18Co cells) in logarithmic growth phase were treated with the conditioned media of colorectal cancer HCT116 cells (HCT116-CM) or Caco-2 cells (Caco-2-CM) alone or in combination with 300 nmol/L ERK inhibitor SCH772984. The expression levels of CAFs-related molecular markers were detected in the treated cells with real-time quantitative PCR (RT- qPCR) and immunofluorescence assay, and the changes in cell proliferation, colony formation and migration were assessed with RTCA, colony formation and wound healing assays; Western blotting was performed to detect the activated signaling pathways in the fibroblasts and the changes in CAFs formation after blocking of the signaling pathway.

RESULTS

HCT116-CM and Caco-2-CM significantly upregulated mRNA expression levels of CAFs markers (including α-SMA, FAP, FN and TGF-β) in CCD-18Co cells, and strongly promoted fibroblast transformation into CAFs (P < 0.05). The two conditioned media also promoted the proliferation, colony formation and migration of CCD-18Co cells (P < 0.05) and significantly increased the levels of α-SMA protein and ERK phosphorylation in the cells (P < 0.05). The ERK inhibitor SCH772984 obviously inhibited the expression of α-SMA and the transformation of CCD-18Co cells into CAFs induced by the conditioned medium of colorectal cancer cells (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Colorectal cancer cells may induce the formation of colorectal CAFs by activating the ERK pathway in the fibroblasts.

Origin of SRS-induced beam quality distortion under TMI threshold

In high power fiber lasers, the degradation of beam quality caused by Raman effect has attracted more and more attention in recent years, but its physical mechanism is still unclear. We're going to differentiate between heat effect and nonlinear effect by duty cycle operation. The evolution of beam quality at different pump duty cycles has been studied based on a quasi-continuous wave (QCW) fiber laser. It is found that even if the Stokes intensity is only -6 dB (energy proportion: 26%) lower than that of the signal light intensity, the beam quality has no obvious change with the duty cycle of 5%; on the contrary, when the duty cycle gradually approaches 100% (CW-pumped scheme), the beam quality distortion changes faster and faster with the increase of Stokes intensity. The experimental results are contrary to core-pumped Raman effect theory [IEEE Photon. Technol. Lett.34, 215 (2022)10.1109/LPT.2022.3148999], and further analysis confirms that the heat accumulation in the process of Stokes frequency shift should be responsible for this phenomenon. That is the first time, to the best of our knowledge, for intuitive reveal of the origin of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS)-induced beam quality distortion under transverse mode instability (TMI) threshold in an experiment.

Meta-analysis of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with task-oriented training on upper limb function in stroke patients with hemiplegia

BACKGROUND

To evaluate the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with task-oriented training (TOT) on upper limb function in stroke patients with hemiplegia.

METHODS

A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed using PRISMA guidelines. Computer searches of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of science, China Knowledge Network, Wanfang, and Wipu databases were conducted from the time of database creation to October 27, 2022. Clinical trials meeting the inclusion criteria were screened, with rTMS combined with TOT in the test group and other therapies in the control group. Literature screening and data extraction were performed independently by 2 investigators, and meta-analysis was performed using Stata software after quality evaluation of the literature.

RESULTS

Meta-analysis results showed that repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with TOT was more effective in box and block test (I2 = 0%, P = .820, 95% confidence interval [CI] [-0.20, 0.88]), Fugl-Meyer Assessment (I2 = 0%, P = .569, 95% CI [0.88, 1.26]), and modified Barthel Index (I2 = 39.9%, P = .189, 95% CI [0.45, 1.03]) were not significantly different from controls, and the efficacy was significantly better in motor evoked potentials (I2 = 86.5%, P < .001, 95% CI [-1.38, -0.83]).

CONCLUSIONS

Data analysis clarified the efficacy of rTMS) combined with TOT on upper extremity motor function disorders after stroke, but there was no significant difference between the efficacy in box and block test, Fugl-Meyer Assessment, and modified Barthel Index and the efficacy in motor evoked potentials between rTMS and the control group, suggesting that the neuro plasticizing effect of rTMS may translate into functional improvement by promoting neuro electrical signaling.

Clinical evidence of positive correlation between intrauterine adhesions and chronic endometritis: a retrospective study

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to analyze the potential correlation between chronic endometritis (CE) and intrauterine adhesions (IUA) with its associated risk factors.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We retrospectively analyzed data from 131 patients who underwent hysteroscopic transcervical resection of adhesions (TCRA) for intrauterine adhesions at our hospital between February 2020 and February 2021. General clinical data were collected and analyzed using univariate, multifactorial, and logistic regression analyses. Patients with mild, moderate, and severe IUA were divided into two groups based on whether they coincided with CE (CE group) or not (NCE group). Logistic regression analysis of the factors associated with IUA was performed, and the recurrence rates of IUA after TCRA in the CE and NCE groups were registered.

RESULTS

The risk of severe IUA was higher in patients with a higher number of abortions, higher number of indolent abortions, and CD138 positivity. In addition, the incidence of IUA combined with chronic CE varied when comparing the different IUA stages: 10.70% (3/28) for patients with mild IUA, 25.00% (7/28) for patients with moderate IUA, and 64.30% (18/28) for patients with severe IUA. The recurrence rates of IUA after TCRA in the CE and NCE groups were 69.20% (9/26) and 30.08% (4/67), respectively, in patients with moderate to severe IUA, and the differences were statistically significant (χ2=12.782, p=0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

A correlation was observed between CE and IUA. Patients presenting both conditions had more severe IUA stage and higher recurrence rates after TCRA.

Femtosecond laser fabrication of chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings for stimulated Raman scattering suppression in kilowatt-level fiber lasers

Chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings (CTFBGs) are important all-fiber filtering components in high-power fiber lasers for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) suppression. The fabrication of CTFBGs in large-mode-area double-cladding fibers (LMA-DCFs) by femtosecond (fs) laser is reported for the first time to the best of our knowledge. The chirped and tilted grating structure is obtained by scanning the fiber obliquely and moving the fs-laser beam relative to the chirped phase mask at the same time. By this method, the CTFBGs with different chirp rates, grating lengths, and tilted angles are fabricated, and the maximum rejection depth and bandwidth are ∼25 dB and ∼12 nm, respectively. To test the performance of the fabricated CTFBGs, one is inserted between the seed laser and the amplifier stage of a 2.7 kW fiber amplifier, and an SRS suppression ratio of ∼4 dB is achieved with no reduction in laser efficiency and degradation in beam quality. This work provides a highly fast and flexible method to fabricate large-core CTFBGs, which is of great significance to the development of high-power fiber laser systems.

Selection principle of seed power in high-power narrow linewidth fiber amplifier seeded by a FBGs-based fiber oscillator

Here, we have experimentally demonstrated the selection principle of the seed power in a narrow linewidth fiber amplifier seeded by fiber oscillator based on a pair of fiber Bragg gratings. During the study on the selection of seed power, the spectral instability of the amplifier is found when a low power seed with bad temporal characteristics is amplified. This phenomenon is thoroughly analyzed from seed itself and the influence of the amplifier. Increasing the seed power or isolating the backward light of amplifier could effectively eliminate the spectral instability. Based on this point, we optimize the seed power and utilize a band pass filter circulator to isolate the backward light and filter the Raman noise. Finally, a 4.2 kW narrow linewidth output power is achieved with signal to noise ratio of 35 dB, which has exceeded the value under the highest output power reported in this type of narrow linewidth fiber amplifiers. This work provides a solution for high power and high signal to noise ratio narrow-linewidth fiber amplifiers seeded by FBGs-based fiber oscillator.

Exploring the relationship between intestinal flora and the pathological mechanism of myopia in adolescents from the perspective of Chinese and Western medicine: A review

The etiology of adolescent myopia involves genetic and environmental factors. The pathological mechanism of modern medicine includes blood perfusion, changes in blood molecules, neurotransmitters, and sclera remodeling. Chinese medicine believes that myopia is mainly related to the deficiency of liver blood and spleen and stomach disorders. The prevention and treatment of myopia in adolescents are very important, but in terms of the current incidence of myopia in adolescents and the level of clinical diagnosis and treatment, its prevention and treatment are insufficient. Modern medicine and traditional Chinese medicine both pay attention to integrity, so adolescent myopia should not only pay attention to eye changes but also pay attention to other body systems and other aspects of change. Intestinal flora has become a research hotspot in recent years, and it has been found that it is closely associated with multi-system and multi-type diseases. No studies have directly investigated the link between Intestinal flora and myopia in adolescents. Therefore, by summarizing the pathological mechanism of adolescent myopia and the connection between intestinal flora and the pathological mechanism of adolescent myopia, this paper analyzes the possible pathological mechanism of the influence of intestinal flora on adolescent myopia, providing a theoretical basis for future studies on the correlation between changes of intestinal flora and its metabolites and the incidence of adolescent myopia, which is of great significance for the study on the risk prediction of adolescent myopia.

[Fuyu Decoction improves ventricular remodeling in rats with heart failure by inhibiting AMPK/mTOR pathway-mediated autophagy]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of Fuyu Decoction on ventricular remodeling and its association with AMPK/mTOR pathway-mediated autophagy in rats with heart failure.

METHODS

Thirty male Wistar rat models of heart failure induced by ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery were divided into model group, Fuyu Decoction treatment group, Fuyu Decoction treatment +AMPK agonist group (n=10), with another 10 rats receiving sham operation as the Sham group. After 8 weeks of drug intervention, the changes of ventricular function and ventricular remodeling indexs of the rats were assessed. TTC staining was used to detect the myocardial infarction area, and HE and Masson staining were used to observe the pathological changes in the myocardial tissue. Western blotting was performed to detect the protein expressions of p-AMPK, p-mTOR, LC3-II, Beclin1 and p62 in the myocardial tissue.

RESULTS

Compared with the sham-operated rats, the rat models of heart failure showed significantly increased left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV), left ventricular endsystolic volume (LVESV), and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) (P < 0.01), reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular fractional shortening (LVFS), and decreased spherical index (SI) were (P < 0.01). The rat models also showed increased myocardial infarction area, obvious myocardial pathologies and fibrosis, increased apoptosis rate of the cardiomyocytes, enhanced myocardial expressions of p-AMPK, LC3-II/LC3-I and Beclin1 (P < 0.01), and reduced expressions of p-mTOR and p62 (P < 0.01). Fuyu Decoction treatment significantly ameliorated these changes in the rat models (all P < 0.01), but its effects were obviously blocked by treatment with EX229.

CONCLUSION

Fuyu Decoction can improve ventricular remodeling in rats with heart failure by inhibiting AMPK/mTOR signaling-mediated autophagy in the cardiomyocytes.

Accurate module induced brain network construction for mild cognitive impairment identification with functional MRI

Introduction

Functional brain networks (FBNs) estimated from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data has become a potentially useful way for computer-aided diagnosis of neurological disorders, such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a prodromal stage of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Currently, Pearson's correlation (PC) is the most widely-used method for constructing FBNs. Despite its popularity and simplicity, the conventional PC-based method usually results in dense networks where regions-of-interest (ROIs) are densely connected. This is not accordance with the biological prior that ROIs may be sparsely connected in the brain. To address this issue, previous studies proposed to employ a threshold or l_1-regularizer to construct sparse FBNs. However, these methods usually ignore rich topology structures, such as modularity that has been proven to be an important property for improving the information processing ability of the brain.

Methods

To this end, in this paper, we propose an accurate module induced PC (AM-PC) model to estimate FBNs with a clear modular structure, by including sparse and low-rank constraints on the Laplacian matrix of the network. Based on the property that zero eigenvalues of graph Laplacian matrix indicate the connected components, the proposed method can reduce the rank of the Laplacian matrix to a pre-defined number and obtain FBNs with an accurate number of modules.

Results

To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we use the estimated FBNs to classify subjects with MCI from healthy controls. Experimental results on 143 subjects from Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) with resting-state functional MRIs show that the proposed method achieves better classification performance than previous methods.

Construction of Planar Gliding Restriction Buffer and Kinetic Self-Accelerator Stabilizing Single-Crystalline LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 Cathode

The single-crystalline Ni-rich cathode has aroused much attention for extenuating the cycling and safety crises in comparison to the polycrystalline cathode. However, planar gliding and kinetic hindrance hinder its chemo-mechanical properties with cycling, which induce delamination cracking and damage the mechanical integrity in single crystals. Herein, a robust Li_2.64(Sc_0.9Ti_0.1)₂(PO₄)₃ (LSTP) ion/electron conductive network was constructed to decorate single-crystal LiNi_0.9Co_0.05Mn_0.05O₂ (SC90) particles. Via physicochemical characterizations and theoretical calculations, this LSTP coating that evenly grows on the SC90 particle with good lattice matching and strong bonding effectively restricts the anisotropic lattice collapse along the c-axis and the cation mixing activity of SC90, thus suppressing planar gliding and delamination cracking during repeated high-voltage lithiation/delithiation processes. Moreover, such a 3D LSTP network can also facilitate the lithium-ion transport and prevent the electrolyte's corrosion, lightening the kinetic hindrance and triggering the surface phase transformation. Combined with the Li metal anode, the LSTP-modified SC90 cell exhibits a desirable capacity retention of 90.5% at 5 C after 300 cycles and stabilizes the operation at 4.3/4.5 V. Our results provide surface modification engineering to mitigate planar gliding and kinetic hindrance of the single-crystalline ultra-high Ni-rich cathode, which inspires peers to design other layered cathode materials.

Restricted-magnesium-vapor-reduction of amorphous SiO/C precursors to polycrystalline Si/SiOx/C hybrid anodes

Considering the electrochemical activity/stability and preparation feasibility of silicon (Si) nanomaterials, we designed a restricted-magnesium-vapor-reduction to fabricate sustainable Si/SiO_x/C porous anodes with nanopores and polycrystalline structures.

Predicting of axillary lymph node metastasis in invasive breast cancer using multiparametric MRI dataset based on CNN model

Purpose

To develop a multiparametric MRI model for predicting axillary lymph node metastasis in invasive breast cancer.

Methods

Clinical data and T2WI, DWI, and DCE-MRI images of 252 patients with invasive breast cancer were retrospectively analyzed and divided into the axillary lymph node metastasis (ALNM) group and non-ALNM group using biopsy results as a reference standard. The regions of interest (ROI) in T2WI, DWI, and DCE-MRI images were segmented using MATLAB software, and the ROI was unified into 224 × 224 sizes, followed by image normalization as input to T2WI, DWI, and DCE-MRI models, all of which were based on ResNet 50 networks. The idea of a weighted voting method in ensemble learning was employed, and then T2WI, DWI, and DCE-MRI models were used as the base models to construct a multiparametric MRI model. The entire dataset was randomly divided into training sets and testing sets (the training set 202 cases, including 78 ALNM, 124 non-ALNM; the testing set 50 cases, including 20 ALNM, 30 non-ALNM). Accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of models were calculated. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of each model for axillary lymph node metastasis, and the DeLong test was performed, P< 0.05 statistically significant.

Results

For the assessment of axillary lymph node status in invasive breast cancer on the test set, multiparametric MRI models yielded an AUC of 0.913 (95% CI, 0.799-0.974); T2WI-based model yielded an AUC of 0.908 (95% CI, 0.792-0.971); DWI-based model achieved an AUC of 0.702 (95% CI, 0.556-0.823); and the AUC of the DCE-MRI-based model was 0.572 (95% CI, 0.424-0.711). The improvement in the diagnostic performance of the multiparametric MRI model compared with the DWI and DCE-MRI-based models were significant (P< 0.01 for both). However, the increase was not meaningful compared with the T2WI-based model (P = 0.917).

Conclusion

Multiparametric MRI image analysis based on an ensemble CNN model with deep learning is of practical application and extension for preoperative prediction of axillary lymph node metastasis in invasive breast cancer.

Through the analysis of this paper, it is believed that COVID-19 may cause Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease has the condition of susceptibility to COVID-19, but this conclusion is still controversial.

Simple method for high average power supercontinuum generation based on Raman mode locking in a quasi-CW fiber laser oscillator

A simple generation method for a supercontinuum (SC) based on Raman mode locking (RML) in a quasi-continuous wave (QCW) fiber laser oscillator is demonstrated experimentally and analyzed in this paper. The power of the SC is adjustable by changing the pump repetition rate and duty cycle. Under the pump repetition rate of 1 kHz and duty cycle of 11.5%, an SC output with a spectral range of 1000-1500 nm is obtained at a maximum output power of 791 W. The RML is fully analyzed in terms of the spectral and temporal dynamics. RML plays a major role in this process and further enriches the generation of the SC. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report on directly generating a high and adjustable average power SC using a large-mode-area (LMA)-based oscillator, which provides a proof-of-concept experiment for achieving a high average power SC source and greatly improves the potential application value of the SC source.

A case of multiple primary lung adenocarcinoma with a CD74-NRG1 fusion protein and HER2 mutation benefit from combined target therapy

Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) gene fusion is a rare oncogenic driver gene in multiple tumor types, leading to the activation of the epidermal growth factor receptor (ErbB)-mediated pathway. Therefore, afatinib, a pan-ErbB family inhibitor, may be a therapeutic candidate for NRG1 fusion-driven tumors. In this case, we report a multiple primary lung adenocarcinoma patient harboring the CD74-NRG1 fusion, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (ERBB2) mutation simultaneously. The patient received afatinib and pyrotinib combination therapy and showed a significant treatment response with a progression-free survival of 5 months. Our case further supports the use of targeted therapy for NRG1 fusion-positive non-small-cell lung cancer.

Multi-modality relation attention network for breast tumor classification

Automatic breast image classification plays an important role in breast cancer diagnosis, and multi-modality image fusion may improve classification performance. However, existing fusion methods ignore relevant multi-modality information in favor of improving the discriminative ability of single-modality features. To improve classification performance, this paper proposes a multi-modality relation attention network with consistent regularization for breast tumor classification using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent dispersion coefficient (ADC) images. Within the proposed network, a novel multi-modality relation attention module improves the discriminative ability of single-modality features by exploring the correlation information between two modalities. In addition, a module ensures the classification consistency of ADC and DWI modality, thus improving robustness to noise. Experimental results on our database demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for breast tumor classification, and outperforms existing multi-modality fusion methods. The AUC, accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity are 85.1%, 86.7%, 83.3%, and 88.9% respectively.

Modality-correlation embedding model for breast tumor diagnosis with mammography and ultrasound images

The fusion of mammography and ultrasound images helps to improve tumor classification accuracy. However, traditional fusion models ignore the correlation between these two modalities, resulting in limited performance improvement. To address this problem, a modality-correlation embedding model was proposed for breast tumor diagnosis by combining mammography and ultrasound imaging. By jointly optimizing the correlation between mammography and ultrasound and classification loss of individual modalities, two mappings are learned to project mammography and ultrasound from their original feature spaces into a common label space. A novel modality-correlation term is introduced to maintain the pairwise closeness of multimodal data in the common label space. Contrary to previous studies that did not consider the correlation between multimodal data, the proposed term can exploit the learned correlation information in the fusion process, which guarantees the consistency of the diagnosis results of multimodal images from the same patient. The proposed method was evaluated on our dataset, which contained ultrasound and mammography images from 73 patients. The area under the ROC curve, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 95.83, 95, 91.67, 95.83, 95.83, and 88.89%, respectively. The experimental results also demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms traditional fusion methods.

Visualization of Chiral Electronic Structure and Anomalous Optical Response in a Material with Chiral Charge Density Waves

Chiral materials have attracted significant research interests as they exhibit intriguing physical properties, such as chiral optical response, spin-momentum locking, and chiral induced spin selectivity. Recently, layered transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS_{2} has been found to host a chiral charge density wave (CDW) order. Nevertheless, the physical consequences of the chiral order, for example, in electronic structures and the optical properties, are yet to be explored. Here, we report the spectroscopic visualization of an emergent chiral electronic band structure in the CDW phase, characterized by windmill-shaped Fermi surfaces. We uncover a remarkable chirality-dependent circularly polarized Raman response due to the salient in-plane chiral symmetry of CDW, although the ordinary circular dichroism vanishes. Chiral Fermi surfaces and anomalous Raman responses coincide with the CDW transition, proving their lattice origin. Our Letter paves a path to manipulate the chiral electronic and optical properties in two-dimensional materials and explore applications in polarization optics and spintronics.

Feature enhancement network for CNV typing in optical coherence tomography images

Objective. Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a characteristic feature of wet age related macular degeneration (AMD), which is one of the main causes of blindness in the elderly. Automatic classification of CNV in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images plays an auxiliary role in the clinical treatment of CNV. Approach. This study proposes a feature enhancement network (FE-net) to discriminate between different CNV types with high inter-class similarity. The FE-net consists of two branches: discriminative FE and diverse FE. In the discriminative FE branch, a novel class-specific feature extraction (CSFE) module is introduced to learn class-specific features, and the discriminative loss is introduced to make the learned features more discriminative. In the diverse FE branch, the attention region selection (ARS) is used to mine the multi-attention features from feature maps in the same class, and the diverse loss is introduced to guarantee that the attention features are different, which can improve the diversity of the learned features. Main results. Experiments were conducted on our CNV dataset, with significant accuracy of 92.33%, 87.45%, 90.10%, and 91.25% on ACC, AUC, SEN, and SPE, respectively. Significance. These results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively learn the discriminative and diverse features to discriminate subtle differences between different types of CNV. And accurate classification of CNV plays an auxiliary role in clinical treatmen.

Effect of Zhan Zhuang Qigong on upper limb static tremor and aerobic exercise capacity in patients with mild-to-moderate Parkinson's disease: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

INTRODUCTION

Currently, the first choice for the clinical treatment of static tremor in Parkinson's disease (PD) is drug therapy, however side effects are common. In recent years, the effects of physical therapy on PD has become a serious research focus. Studies have indicated that aerobic and resistance exercises alleviate PD movement disorders and improve aerobic capacity, but the effects of Qigong on PD static tremor and aerobic capacity remain unknown.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of Zhan Zhuang Qigong on upper limb static tremor and aerobic capacity in patients with PD, we established a rigorous randomised, parallel-controlled, assignment hidden, evaluator-blinded protocol.

METHODS

Seventy-two patients with PD, at the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, were recruited and randomly divided into a control (n=36) and experimental group (n=36). The intervention group received conventional medicine plus Zhan Zhuang Qigong exercises five times a week at 30 min each time, over an 8-week period. The long-term effects of Zhan Zhuang Qigong on PD was investigated after the intervention. Phyphox APP, CRST, CPET, UPDRS(II, III) were used to evaluate tremor, aerobic capacity, and motor function in groups.

DISCUSSION

We are investigating the effects of Zhan Zhuang Qigong on upper limb static tremor and aerobic capacity in patients with PD. If positive are identified, they will add a new research direction and evidence for the clinical exploration of exercise therapy for PD.

Demonstration of constant-cladding tapered-core Yb-doped fiber for mitigating thermally-induced mode instability in high-power monolithic fiber amplifiers

In this work, a large-mode-area (LMA) step-index constant-cladding tapered-core (CCTC) Yb-doped fiber with a cladding diameter of ∼600 µm is successfully fabricated. The CCTC fiber has a small-core region (diameter of ∼20 µm) at both ends and a large-core region (diameter of ∼36 µm) in the middle. To prove the laser performance of the CCTC fiber, a detailed comparison experiment with conventional uniform fiber with the same effective core diameter is carried out in a multi-kW all-fiber MOPA configuration. The experimental results show that employing the CCTC fiber can effectively mitigate the thermally-induced transverse mode instability (TMI) in both co-pump and counter-pump schemes, and realize high slope efficiency and single-mode beam quality (M²∼1.30). Under the counter-pump scheme, the TMI threshold of the CCTC fiber is observed at ∼2.49 kW with a slope efficiency of 86.2%, while the uniform fiber amplifier exhibits a TMI threshold of ∼2.05 kW. The theoretical analysis based on a semi-analytical model indicates this CCTC fiber can effectively improve the TMI threshold owing to a stronger gain saturation. Our results verify the great potential of such an LMA CCTC fiber to mitigate thermal-induced TMI effect and achieve single-mode operation without sacrifice of laser efficiency in high power monolithic fiber lasers, and the further power scaling is expected by optimizing the fiber design.

2 × 2 kW near-single-mode bidirectional high-power output from a single-cavity monolithic fiber laser

Traditional monolithic fiber lasers can only achieve unidirectional high-power laser output. In this Letter, a novel high-power linear cavity fiber laser that can achieve bidirectional high-power output is proposed and demonstrated. In an ordinary laser resonant cavity, we replace the high-reflectivity fiber Bragg grating with a low-reflectivity fiber Bragg grating to realize bidirectional laser output. In our experiment, the laser cavity was composed of two fiber Bragg gratings with a reflectivity of about 10%. The pump power provided by the 976 nm laser diodes was injected into a double-clad Yb-doped fiber with core/cladding diameters of 20/400 µm. At the maximum pump power, the bidirectional output powers were 2025 W and 1948 W, respectively, and the output laser beam quality (M² factor) at both ends was about 1.5. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the feasibility of a bidirectional output fiber laser that can achieve double high (2-kW-level) power was verified. Compared with a traditional unidirectional output laser, this type of bidirectional output laser can achieve a double high-power laser by employing a laser resonant cavity. Thus, the average cost and structure size can be further reduced in mass production.

Tapered Yb-doped fiber enabled a 4 kW near-single-mode monolithic fiber amplifier

In this Letter, we demonstrate a monolithic high-power master oscillator power amplifier by using a home-made double-clad tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF) with an input end of ∼20/400 µm and an output end of ∼30/600 µm. Thanks to perfect core/cladding matching with the fiber components at both ends of the T-YDF, the laser is pumped bidirectionally and an output power of over 4 kW with a high slope efficiency of 84.1% and excellent beam quality M² ∼ 1.46 is achieved. In contrast to previous work on common fiber lasers, experimental results also reveal that the co-pump scheme has a higher transverse mode instability (TMI) threshold and power-boosting capability than that of a counter-pump scheme. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest output power demonstrated to date from such a T-YDF with excellent beam quality. This work indicates the great potential of the T-YDF to realize further power scaling, high laser efficiency, and excellent beam quality in high-power fiber lasers.

Molecular Networking-Based Screening Led to the Discovery of a Cyclic Heptadepsipeptide from an Endolichenic Xylaria sp

MS/MS-based molecular networking strain prioritization led to the discovery of a group of cyclic depsipeptides from an endolichenic Xylaria sp. The main component, xylaroamide A (1), was obtained by LC-MS-guided isolation. The planar structure of compound 1 was elucidated via 1D and 2D NMR, as well as MS/MS data. The configurations were fully determined by the combination of advanced Marfey's analysis, partial hydrolysis, Mosher's reaction, and GIAO NMR calculation based on a restricted conformational search. A plausible biosynthetic pathway for xylaroamide A (1) involving a rare trans-acting N-methyltransferase is proposed based on bioinformatics analysis. Xylaroamide A (1) exhibited inhibitory activity against cancer cell lines BT-549 and RKO with IC₅₀ values of 2.5 and 9.5 μM, respectively.

High-peak-power pump-modulated quasi-CW fiber laser

Quasi-continuous wave (CW) laser output with high peak power and high energy is preferred in some industrial applications. Due to the non-linear effects and transverse mode instability, such high-peak-power laser output is difficult to achieve via monolithic fiber lasers in CW mode. For diode-pumped monolithic fiber lasers, by applying overshoot pulse modulation to the pumping diodes, we obtain a pulse laser output with a peak power much higher than that in CW mode. In this paper, it has been theoretically studied that stable pulses with the width of µs level can be generated with quasi-CW operation without distortion according to our simulation. We also experimentally demonstrate a bi-directional pumped quasi-CW monolithic fiber laser operating in CW and pulse modes. In quasi-CW mode, by applying overshoot pulse modulation to the diodes, with a frequency of 1 kHz and a pulse width of 100 µs, the peak power of the output laser reached 9713 W with an average power of 898 W and M² of 2.4 and 2.3 in the two orthogonal directions, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the very first quasi-CW fiber laser of a 10-kW level with the M² level of 2.

Kilowatt random Raman fiber laser with full-open cavity

Random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) has been widely studied in high-power laser generation due to its special lasing characteristics. However, all previous high-power results are based on the half-open cavity. In this letter, we demonstrate an applicable high-power RRFL with the simplest structure, that is, a full-open cavity. The lasing dynamic and output characteristics are theoretically and experimentally studied. Laser source with multi-longitudinal modes can result in the random laser output from one side even in the full-open cavity. The ratio of the backward output power is mainly determined by the reflectivity of fiber ends. The experimental results show that such a simple structure can easily generate kilowatts of random laser power and is a promising setup to achieve higher output power, which is also an important platform to study the laser dynamic in high-power full-open cavity without any point-action or regular distributed reflectors.

Towards high-power mid-IR light source tunable from 3.8 to 4.5 µm by HBr-filled hollow-core silica fibres

Fibre lasers operating at the mid-IR have attracted enormous interest due to the plethora of applications in defence, security, medicine, and so on. However, no continuous-wave (CW) fibre lasers beyond 4 μm based on rare-earth-doped fibres have been demonstrated thus far. Here, we report efficient mid-IR laser emission from HBr-filled silica hollow-core fibres (HCFs) for the first time. By pumping with a self-developed thulium-doped fibre amplifier seeded by several diode lasers over the range of 1940-1983 nm, narrow linewidth mid-IR emission from 3810 to 4496 nm has been achieved with a maximum laser power of about 500 mW and a slope efficiency of approximately 18%. To the best of our knowledge, the wavelength of 4496 nm with strong absorption in silica-based fibres is the longest emission wavelength from a CW fibre laser, and the span of 686 nm is also the largest tuning range achieved to date for any CW fibre laser. By further reducing the HCF transmission loss, increasing the pump power, improving the coupling efficiency, and optimizing the fibre length together with the pressure, the laser efficiency and output power are expected to increase significantly. This work opens new opportunities for broadly tunable high-power mid-IR fibre lasers, especially beyond 4 μm.

Role, molecular mechanism and the potential target of breast cancer stem cells in breast cancer development

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in women globally, and its occurrence has surpassed lung cancer and become the biggest threat for women. At present, breast cancer treatment includes surgical resection or postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy. However, tumor relapse and metastasis usually lead to current therapy failure thanks to breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs)-mediated tumorigenicity and drug resistance. Drug resistance is mainly due to the long-term quiescent G0 phase, strong DNA repairability, and high expression of ABC transporter, and the tumorigenicity is reflected in the activation of various proliferation pathways related to BCSCs. Therefore, understanding the characteristics of BCSCs and their intracellular and extracellular molecular mechanisms is crucial for the development of targeted drugs for BCSCs. To this end, we discussed the latest developments in BCSCs research, focusing on the analysis of specific markers, critical signaling pathways that maintain the stemness of BCSCs，such as NOTCH, Wnt/β-catenin, STAT3, Hedgehog, and Hippo-YAP signaling, immunomicroenviroment and summarizes targeting therapy strategies for stemness maintenance and differentiation, which provides a theoretical basis for further exploration of treating breast cancer and preventing relapse derived from BCSCs.

LRSCnet: Local Reference Semantic Code learning for breast tumor classification in ultrasound images

Purpose

This study proposed a novel Local Reference Semantic Code (LRSC) network for automatic breast ultrasound image classification with few labeled data.

Methods

In the proposed network, the local structure extractor is firstly developed to learn the local reference which describes common local characteristics of tumors. After that, a two-stage hierarchical encoder is developed to encode the local structures of lesion into the high-level semantic code. Based on the learned semantic code, the self-matching layer is proposed for the final classification.

Results

In the experiment, the proposed method outperformed traditional classification methods and AUC (Area Under Curve), ACC (Accuracy), Sen (Sensitivity), Spec (Specificity), PPV (Positive Predictive Values), and NPV(Negative Predictive Values) are 0.9540, 0.9776, 0.9629, 0.93, 0.9774 and 0.9090, respectively. In addition, the proposed method also improved matching speed.

Conclusions

LRSC-network is proposed for breast ultrasound images classification with few labeled data. In the proposed network, a two-stage hierarchical encoder is introduced to learn high-level semantic code. The learned code contains more effective high-level classification information and is simpler, leading to better generalization ability.

Multifunctionality of cerium decoration in enhancing the cycling stability and rate capability of a nickel-rich layered oxide cathode

The structural collapse and surface chemical degradation of nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes (NCM) of lithium-ion batteries during operation, which result in severe capacity attenuation, are the major challenges that hinder their commercial development. To improve the cycle and rate performances of LiNi_0.8Co_0.1Mn_0.1O₂ (NCM811), in this study, we have constructed a double-shell structure protective layer with a surface CeO_2-x coating and interfacial spinel-like phase, which mitigate particle microcrack formation and isolate the NCM811 particles from electrolyte erosion. Additionally, during heat-treatment calcination, tetravalent cerium ions with strong oxidation ability can be partially doped into the material, which causes partial oxidation of Ni²⁺ to Ni³⁺, thereby reducing the Li⁺/Ni²⁺ mixing. The strong Ce-O bonds formed in the lattice help to improve the stability of the structure in the highly de-lithiated state. Thus, the synergy of multifunctional cerium modification effectively improves the structural stability and electrochemical kinetics of the material during cycling. Impressively, the obtained Ce-NCM811 exhibits capacity retention of 80.3% at a high discharge rate of 8 C after 500 cycles, which is much higher than that of the pristine cathode (only 44.3%). This work successfully designed a material with multi-functional Ce modification to provide a basis for Ni-rich cathode materials, which is crucial as it effectively improves the electrochemical performance.

Demonstration of the reliability of a 5-kW-level oscillating-amplifying integrated fiber laser

A novel fiber laser called an oscillating-amplifying integrated fiber laser was studied experimentally, in which the oscillating section and amplifying section share the pump between them. Based on this configuration, a 5-kW fiber laser system with optical-optical efficiency of 80.9% and M² factor of 1.5 was achieved. The startup and shutdown sequence of the laser was studied in detail. When pumps of the laser were deliberately turned on in an inverted order, such as switching on/off the amplifying section before/after the oscillating section, which is normally disastrous in a classic fiber amplifier, the laser system turned out to operate stably at full power level. Thus, it is verified that there is no priority between the amplifier and the seed in this laser system. It combines the advantages of conventional fiber oscillators and fiber amplifiers, including high efficiency, high reliability, good anti-backreflection, and simple control logic.

Numerical investigation for the mode transmission characteristics of a large mode area optical fiber with heterogeneous helical claddings designed for 2.0 µm

Large mode area (LMA) fibers are widely used in high-power fiber lasers to solve the nonlinear problems. In this Letter, a novel LMA fiber with heterogeneous helical claddings (HHCs) is proposed. A coordinate transformation simulation technique is adopted to analyze the fiber mode transmission characteristics. The effects of the fiber parameters such as θ,Λ,r,n₀,n₁,n₂,n₃, and λ on the mode transmission characteristics include loss coefficient L and effective mode area A_eff. When θ=14^∘, Λ=22mm, n₀=n₂=1.439, and n₁=n₃=1.438 are adopted. The loss coefficients are L₀₁=0.093dB/m, L₁₁=9.47dB/m, and L₂₁=23.36dB/m; the single-mode fiber diameter 2r is at least 60 µm; and the corresponding effective mode field area A_eff is 2025µm². As the helix pitch is a centimeter order of magnitude and the fiber is all solid state, the HHC fiber is relatively easy to fabricate and convenient for cutting, splicing, etc., and will be well applied in the field of high-power fiber lasers.
