Abstract
PURPOSE Dialysis patients are at an increased risk of developing renal cell carcinoma (RCC); however, differentiating between RCC and benign cysts can sometimes be difficult using modalities, such as computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography. 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET)/CT efficiently detects malignant tumors; however, physiological accumulation of FDG in the kidney limits its efficacy in detecting renal tumors. However, in patients with severely impaired renal function, the renal accumulation of FDG is decreased, possibly improving the detection of renal malignancies in this patient population. This study evaluated the usefulness of FDG-PET/CT as a screening tool for detecting RCC in patients with end-stage renal disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS This prospective study recruited 150 participants from 2012 to 2016 who were on dialysis or underwent renal transplantation and were on dialysis until transplantation. FDG-PET/CT was performed to screen for RCC. Three radiologists independently evaluated the images. No protocol was defined for the additional management of positive examinations, leaving decisions to the discretion of each participant. Negative examinations were observed until the end of 2019. RESULTS In total, 150 participants (mean age, 58 ± 13 years; 105 men) underwent FDG-PET/CT. Twenty patients (13.4%) were diagnosed as positive. Fifteen patients underwent additional examinations and/or procedures, and RCC was found in seven patients. Of the four patients who underwent surgical resection, the pathological results were clear cell RCC in one, papillary RCC in one, and acquired cystic disease-associated RCC in two. Two participants were diagnosed with RCC on bone biopsy, and one was diagnosed on dynamic CT but opted for observation. The sensitivity, specificity, and negative predictive value were 100%, 93.9%, and 100%, respectively. CONCLUSION FDG-PET/CT was useful for detecting RCC in patients with end-stage renal disease. Our findings show the potential use of FDG-PET/CT as a screening tool for RCC in this patient population.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs)-related and patient-related risk factors for acute adverse reactions (AARs), and to examine the incidence and severity of repeated AARs. METHODS This study retrospectively evaluated all intravenous GBCA injections in MRI studies at a single institution from January 2012 to September 2019. First-time AARs in patients without a past history of AARs and risk factors were assessed using multivariable regression models with generalized estimating equations. For patients with a past history of AAR(s), we evaluated the incidence of repeated AARs using the Fisher's exact test, as well as the severity of these repeated AARs. RESULTS First-time AARs occurred in 129 of 41,827 GBCA injections (0.31 %; 0.70 % of 18,431 patients). With gadoterate meglumine as the reference, the odds ratio (OR) for allergic-like reactions to three GBCAs ranged from 3.27 to 8.03 (p = 0.012 to <0.001). For chemotoxic reactions, the OR was 3.75 (p = 0.001) for gadoteridol. Outpatients had a lower OR for chemotoxic reactions, while higher ORs were observed in head/neck and breast MRI (p < 0.05). The OR for age was 0.99 (p < 0.05). Patients with a past history of AAR(s) had a 3.6 % incidence of mild repeated AARs for all GBCA, significantly higher than the 0.31 % in first-time AARs (p < 0.001). No effectiveness was found for steroid premedication. CONCLUSION The occurrence of first-time AARs was related to the GBCA used and other factors. The incidence of repeated AARs was higher than first-time AARs, though all were mild in severity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Lower gingival squamous cell carcinoma (LGSCC) has the potential to invade the alveolar bone. Traditionally, the diagnosis of LGSCC relied on morphological imaging, but inconsistencies between these assessments and surgical findings have been observed. This study aimed to assess the correlation between LGSCC bone marrow invasion and PET texture features and to enhance diagnostic accuracy by using machine learning. METHODS A retrospective analysis of 159 LGSCC patients with pretreatment 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/computed tomography (CT) examination from 2009 to 2017 was performed. We extracted radiomic features from the PET images, focusing on pathologic bone marrow invasion detection. Extracted features underwent the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm-based selection and were then used for machine learning via the XGBoost package to distinguish bone marrow invasion presence. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed. RESULTS From the 159 patients, 88 qualified for further analysis (59 men; average age, 69.2 years), and pathologic bone marrow invasion was identified in 69 (78%) of these patients. Three significant radiological features were identified: Gray level co-occurrence matrix_Correlation, INTENSITY-BASED_IntensityInterquartileRange, and MORPHOLOGICAL_SurfaceToVolumeRatio. An XGBoost machine-learning model, using PET radiomic features to detect bone marrow invasion, yielded an area under the curve value of 0.83. CONCLUSION Our findings highlighted the potential of 18 F-FDG PET radiomic features, combined with machine learning, as a promising avenue for improving LGSCC diagnosis and treatment. Using 18 F-FDG PET texture features may provide a robust and accurate method for determining the presence or absence of bone marrow invasion in LGSCC patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate whether intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and/or non-Gaussian diffusion parameters are associated with distant disease-free survival (DDFS) in patients with invasive breast cancer. METHODS From May 2013 to March 2015, 101 patients (mean age 60.0, range 28-88) with invasive breast cancer were evaluated prospectively. IVIM parameters (flowing blood volume fraction [fIVIM] and pseudodiffusion coefficient [D*]) and non-Gaussian diffusion parameters (theoretical apparent diffusion coefficient [ADC] at a b value of 0 s/mm2 [ADC0] and kurtosis [K]) were estimated using a diffusion-weighted imaging series of 16 b values up to 2500 s/mm2. Shifted ADC values (sADC200-1500) and standard ADC values (ADC0-800) were also calculated. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to generate survival analyses for DDFS, which were compared using the log-rank test. Univariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess any associations between each parameter and distant metastasis-free survival. RESULTS The median observation period was 80 months (range, 35-92 months). Among the 101 patients, 12 (11.9%) developed distant metastasis, with a median time to metastasis of 79 months (range, 10-92 months). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that DDFS was significantly shorter in patients with K > 0.98 than in those with K ≤ 0.98 (P = 0.04). Cox regression analysis showed a marginal statistical association between K and distant metastasis-free survival (P = 0.05). CONCLUSION Non-Gaussian diffusion may be associated with prognosis in invasive breast cancer. A higher K may be a marker to help identify patients at an elevated risk of distant metastasis, which could guide subsequent treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze the appropriateness of primary response for anaphylaxis due to iodinated contrast media (ICM) or gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA). MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included all patients in whom intravenous contrast agents (five types of ICMs and four types of GBCAs) were administered at our hospital between April 2016 and September 2021. For the patients who developed anaphylaxis, we obtained data on the time records of contrast injection, anaphylaxis onset, and intramuscular adrenaline (epinephrine) administration. RESULTS Of the 76,555 ICM and 30,731 GBCA administrations, anaphylaxis occurred in 49 cases (0.05%), and in 48 cases (98.0%) the onset was within 30 min after administration with widely distributed times (median, 7.5 min; interquartile range, 4.5-10.8 min; max, 26 min). Intramuscular adrenaline administration was performed in 43 cases (87.8%), and this was done within five minutes after the onset in 37 cases (75.5%). Only in 24 cases (49.0%), there were time records of both the onset and adrenaline administration (if performed). CONCLUSION Anaphylaxis occurred within 30 min after contrast injection in the majority of the cases, but times were widely distributed. Only in 75.5% of cases, appropriate primary treatment was performed, and the importance of keeping exact time records in patients' charts should be re-emphasized.

Abstract
We describe a setup of time-, spin-, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-SARPES) employing a 10.7 eV (λ = 115.6 nm) pulse laser at a 1 MHz repetition rate as a probe photon source. This equipment effectively combines the technologies of a high-power Yb:fiber laser, ultraviolet-driven harmonic generation in Xe gas, and a SARPES apparatus equipped with very-low-energy-electron-diffraction spin detectors. A high repetition rate (1 MHz) of the probe laser allows experiments with the photoemission space-charge effects significantly reduced, despite a high flux of 1013 photons/s on the sample. The relatively high photon energy (10.7 eV) also brings the capability of observing a wide momentum range that covers the entire Brillouin zone of many materials while ensuring high momentum resolution. The experimental setup overcomes the low efficiency of spin-resolved measurements, which gets even more severe for the pump-probed unoccupied states, and affords the opportunity to investigate ultrafast electron and spin dynamics of modern quantum materials with energy and time resolutions of 25 meV and 360 fs, respectively.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the clinical features and risk factors of iodinated contrast media (ICM)-induced anaphylaxis. METHODS This retrospective study included all patients undergoing contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) with intravenous ICM administration (iopamidol, iohexol, iomeprol, iopromide, ioversol) at our hospital between April 2016 and September 2021. Medical records of patients who experienced anaphylaxis were reviewed, and the multivariable regression model using generalized estimating equations was employed to eliminate the effect of intrapatient correlation. RESULTS Of the 76,194 ICM administrations (44,099 men [58 %] and 32,095 women; age, median, 68 years) to 27, 696 patients, anaphylaxis occurred in 45 cases in 45 different patients (0.06 % of administration and 0.16 % of patients), all with onset within 30 min after administration. Thirty-one (69 %) had no risk factors for ADRs, including 14 (31 %) who had previously used the same ICM that caused anaphylaxis. Thirty-one patients (69 %) had a history of ICM use without any ADRs. Four patients (8.9 %) received oral steroid premedication. The only factor associated with anaphylaxis was the type of ICM, with an odds ratio (OR) of 6.8 (p < 0.001) for iomeprol with iopamidol as a reference. No significant differences in OR of anaphylaxis were found for patients' age, sex, or premedication. CONCLUSION The overall incidence of anaphylaxis due to ICM was very low. More than half of the cases had no risk factors for ADRs and had no ADRs on past ICM administration, although the ICM type was associated with a higher OR.

Abstract
The hippocampus is an important area for memory encoding and retrieval and is the location of spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP), a basic phenomenon of learning and memory. STDP is facilitated if acetylcholine (ACh) is released from cholinergic neurons during attentional processes. However, it is unclear how ACh influences postsynaptic changes during STDP induction and determines the STDP magnitude. To address these issues, we obtained patch clamp recordings from CA1 pyramidal neurons to evaluate the postsynaptic changes during stimuli injection in Schaffer collaterals by quantifying baseline amplitudes (i.e., the lowest values elicited by paired pulses comprising STDP stimuli) and action potentials. The results showed that baseline amplitudes were elevated if eserine was applied in the presence of picrotoxin. In addition, muscarinic ACh receptors (mAChRs) contributed more to the baseline amplitude elevation than nicotinic AChRs (nAChRs). Moreover, the magnitude of the STDP depended on the magnitude of the baseline amplitude. However, in the absence of picrotoxin, baseline amplitudes were balanced, regardless of the ACh concentration, resulting in a similar magnitude of the STDP, except under the nAChR alone-activated condition, which showed a larger STDP and lower baseline amplitude induction. This was due to broadened widths of action potentials. These results suggest that activation of mAChRs and nAChRs, which are effective for baseline amplitudes and action potentials, respectively, plays an important role in postsynaptic changes during memory consolidation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of metal artifact reduction (MAR) processing in cone beam computed tomography angiography using the relative artifact index (AIr) and the difference due to tube voltage. A water phantom was imaged to obtain noise images. Next, a platinum alloy embolic coil was installed in the central part of the water phantom and the peripheral part, and then artifact images were acquired. The tube voltages were 70 kV and 109 kV, and four types of artifact images were acquired (with and without MAR). In all, 10 images in the z-direction from each image series were acquired (total: 40 images). The AIr value was calculated by setting a region of interest in the images, and multiple comparisons were made between the imaging conditions (significance level set at p<0.05). The AIr values were significantly lower by MAR, and MAR significantly reduced metal artifacts regardless of tube voltage (p<0.001). This study's results show that MAR with cone beam CT can reduce metal artifacts by more than 91%, and the effect is comparable regardless of tube voltage.

Abstract
The August 14, Mw7.2, Nippes earthquake in Haiti occurred within the same fault zone as its devastating, Mw7.0, 2010 predecessor but struck the country when field access was limited by insecurity and conventional seismometers from the national network were inoperative. A network of citizen seismometers installed in 2019 provided near-field data critical to rapidly understand the mechanism of the mainshock and monitor its aftershock sequence. Their real-time data define two aftershock clusters that coincide with two areas of coseismic slip derived from inversions of conventional seismological and geodetic data. Machine learning applied to data from the citizen seismometer closest to the mainshock allows us to forecast aftershocks as accurately as with the network-derived catalog. This shows the utility of citizen science contributing to the understanding of a major earthquake.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) guidelines recommend the two-finger technique (TFT) of chest compression (CC) in infants for a single rescuer. We hypothesized that healthcare providers cannot achieve adequate CC depth with TFT, even if using real-time visual feedback (RVF). METHODS This was a cross-over study, randomizing participants to perform three sets of 2-min continuous CC, comparing (i) TFT with RVF, (ii) the one-hand technique (OHT) without RVF, and (iii) OHT with RVF. A standard CPR trainer manikin of a 3-month-old infant and a monitor/defibrillator that displays and records the quantitative CC quality were used. We set a target compression depth of 40-50 mm and a target compression rate of 100-120/min. Data were analyzed using the Friedman test and Bonferroni correction. Statistical significance was defined as P-value of< 0.05. RESULTS Fifty-nine healthcare providers participated in the study. The mean compression depth was 24 mm (interquartile range [IQR], 22-26 mm) in TFT with RVF and 43 mm (IQR, 38-48 mm) in OHT without RVF, P < 0.001. The proportion of adequate CC depth was 0% (IQR, 0-0%) in TFT with RVF, 22% (IQR, 5-54%) in OHT without RVF, and 62% (IQR, 29-83%) in OHT with RVF. The mean compression rate was within the target range in all three techniques. CONCLUSIONS The TFT cannot produce the CC depth that meets the recommendation of the current CPR guidelines for an infant with RVF, whereas the OHT does.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate patients' radiation dose in computed tomography (CT)-fluoroscopy-guided cryoablation for small renal tumors and assess the possible factors affecting it. METHODS In our institution, cryoablation was performed in 152 patients between 2013 and 2020. Procedures that were not for renal tumors and did not have radiation dose records and detailed information were excluded from the analysis. The size-specific dose estimates (SSDE), volume CT dose index (CTDIvol), dose-length product (DLP), and entrance skin dose (ESD) were evaluated for both spiral scan and CT-fluoroscopy. The effects of the number of cryoneedle punctures; combined use of hydro- and/or pneumodissection procedures; patients' characteristics, such as body-mass index (BMI); and the tumor-related factors, such as tumor location, were determined by the univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS In the 72 included procedures, the median SSDE was 658 mGy and the median CTDIvol was 456 mGy. The median percentage dose of CT-fluoroscopy to the total procedure dose was estimated as 89.8% (591/658 mGy) with SSDE and 41.4% (611/1,475 mGy cm) with DLP. The combined use of hydro- and/or pneumodissection and number of cryoneedle punctures were significantly associated with the total ESD, and the maximum total ESD was 863 mGy in our cases. CONCLUSIONS Using SSDE as an index, 89.8% of patients' radiation dose was attributed to CT-fluoroscopy, and ESD for the total procedure did not exceed 1 Gy. The increased number of cryoneedle punctures and combined use of hydro- and/or pneumodissection increased the total ESD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The major problems of computed tomography (CT) imaging include radiation exposure and severe artifacts caused by operative implants. PURPOSE To evaluate the usefulness of the metal artifact reduction algorithm and model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) in postoperative low-dose (LD) spine CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS A CT torso phantom was scanned at standard-dose (SD) and LD settings. The CT images were reconstructed by three methods: hybrid iterative reconstruction (HIR); metal artifact reduction; and MBIR. The radiation dose of the phantom imaging was evaluated by volume CT dose index (mGy), dose length product (DLP, mGy × cm), and effective dose (mSv). The image quality of the six images was visually evaluated and analyzed using Scheffe's paired comparison method. The average preference of each method was calculated based on the comparative scores. The task transfer function (TTF) and noise power spectrum for HIR and MBIR were also measured. RESULTS The respective radiation-dose-related parameters of the SD and LD conditions were: volume CT dose index = 10.2 and 1.2 mGy; DLP = 277.9 and 33.9 mGy × cm; and effective dose = 4.2 and 0.5 mSv. The average preference for diagnostic acceptability of MBIR at LD was not significantly different from the other reconstructions of SD data. MBIR successfully reduced metal artifacts in the LD condition. The 10% TTF was higher for HIR at SD and higher for MBIR at LD. CONCLUSION MBIR is useful for LD spine CT after spine surgery with metal implant.

Abstract
Endometriosis is characterised by inflammation and fibrotic changes. Our previous study using a mouse model showed that proinflammatory factors present in peritoneal haemorrhage exacerbated inflammation in endometriosis-like grafts, at least in part through the activation of prostaglandin (PG) E2 receptor and protease-activated receptor (PAR). In addition, hypoxia is a well-known inducer of fibrosis that may be associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). However, the complex molecular interactions between hypoxia and proinflammatory menstruation-related factors, PGE2 and thrombin, a PAR1 agonist, on EMT in endometriosis have not been fully characterised. To explore the effects of hypoxia and proinflammatory factors on EMT-like changes in endometrial cells, we determined the effects of PGE2 and thrombin (P/T) on EMT marker expression and cell migration in three dimensional cultured human endometrial epithelial cells (EECs) and endometrial stromal cells (ESCs). Treatment of EECs with P/T under hypoxia stimulated cell migration, increased the expression of mesenchymal N-cadherin, vimentin and C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4), and reduced the expression of epithelial E-cadherin. Furthermore, treatment with C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12), a ligand for CXCR4, increased EMT marker expression and cell migration. In ESCs, P/T or oestrogen treatment under hypoxic conditions increased the expression and secretion of CXCL12. Taken together, our data show that hypoxic and proinflammatory stimuli induce EMT, cell migration and inflammation in EECs, which was increased by CXCL12 derived from ESCs. These data imply that inflammatory mediators in retrograde menstrual fluid contribute to ectopic endometrial EMT and migration in the presence of peritoneal hypoxia.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate other indices estimating absorbed dose for eye lens and brain, using clinical images of East Asian pediatric patients. We simulated head computed tomography (CT ) examinations in 104 pediatric patients. Effective diameter (deff) and water equivalent diameter (dw) were measured on clinical images. Various size metrics and age were compared with absorbed dose normalised by CTDIvol (nD). The nD was estimated for eye and brain. The nD tended to decrease with advancing age. R2 between age and nD were 0.38 and 0.31 for eye and brain, respectively. Increasing head diameters decreased each nD. R2 between deff and dw, and nD were 0.20-0.24 and 0.51-0.53 for eye and brain, respectively. Head sizes allowed us to estimate absorbed dose in brain CT on East Asian pediatric patients. Scanning parameters for pediatric head CT may need to be based on individual patient information.

Introduction
Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) occasionally experience recurrent myocardial ischemia. Because of their severe CAD and its complicated hemodynamics, conventional cardiac perfusion SPECT often cannot reveal the severity and prognosis solely. Hybrid cardiac SPECT/CT imaging simultaneously shows myocardial ischemia distribution, coronary artery lesion distribution, and their relationship, and this modality may enable detailed interpretation and risk stratification for such patients.
Aim
This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of hybrid cardiac SPECT/CT for patients with CAD and suspected myocardial ischemia after CABG.
Methods
A total of 201 consecutive patients, registered between April 2016 and September 2018, with suspected recurrent angina pectoris after CABG requiring examinations for myocardial ischemia were included in this study. Among these, 135 patients who underwent cardiac perfusion SPECT, cardiac CT, and hybrid cardiac SPECT/CT imaging were analyzed. In the SPECT-only analysis, SDS was calculated, and the patients were divided into none-to-mild (SDS <4) and moderate-to-severe ischemia (SDS ≥4) groups. In the SPECT/CT analysis, the patients were divided into a matched group (SPECT reversible accumulation defects [SDS ≥2] along coronary arteries with significant lesions) and an unmatched group (accumulation defects not coincided with coronary artery territories or no significant stenoses in the corresponding coronary arteries). All patients were observed from the time of these tests for the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE), and the prognostic performances of these analyses were compared.
Results
In the SPECT-only analysis, 62 were in the none-to-mild group and 73 were in the moderate-to-severe group. In the SPECT/CT analysis, 61 were in the matched group and 74 were in the unmatched group. Within the follow-up period of 29±8 months, 15 patients experienced MACE. The patients' prognoses were clearly stratified by hybrid SPECT/CT analysis (matched: 13/61, 21.3% vs. unmatched: 2/74, 2.7%) compared with SPECT-only analysis (moderate-to-severe: 11/73, 15.0% vs. none-to-mild: 4/62, 6.5%). The hybrid cardiac SPECT/CT analysis was more strongly associated with the occurrence of MACE compared with SPECT-only analysis (p=0.008 vs. p=0.04, respectively).
Conclusions
Hybrid cardiac SPECT/CT imaging can have higher prognostic value compared with stand-alone cardiac perfusion SPECT for patients with CAD after CABG.

Abstract
PURPOSE The principal aim of this study was to evaluate radiation exposure of interventionalists during computed tomography (CT) fluoroscopy-guided percutaneous cryoablation (PCA) using radiophotoluminescent glass dosimeters (RPLDs). The radioprotective effects of safety glasses and lead apron were also evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Radiation exposure of interventionalists during 46 CT fluoroscopy-guided PCA procedures was evaluated. Entrance surface dose (ESD) was measured using RPLDs on multiple sites: five sites, representing eye lens exposure; five sites, representing body exposure; and four sites, representing skin exposure. The ESD values on multiple sites were compared between different PCA procedures (renal, liver, and bone). RESULTS The mean ESD on the X-ray-side hand exhibited the highest value (358.8 μGy). Regarding evaluation sites representing exposure to the eye lens, the highest ESD inside the radiation protective glasses was detected on the X-ray-side cheek (167.1 μGy). Most ESD values among multiple sites (10/14) were linearly correlated with CT fluoroscopy time. Among them, the ESD values measured during renal and liver PCA were relatively higher than those measured during bone PCA, especially on the chest area outside the lead apron, and on the X-ray tube-side elbow and hand during renal and bone PCA. Radioprotective effects of safety glasses and lead apron ranged from 44.6 to 50.6% and from 30.2 to 79.6%, respectively, on each evaluation site. CONCLUSION The site with the highest radiation exposure on interventionalists during CT fluoroscopy-guided PCA was the X-ray tube-side hand. Radiation exposure of interventionalists was at acceptable levels and consistent with the recommended dose limits.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate radiation dose and image quality of cervical spinal computed tomography scanned with low-radiation dose (LD-CT) utilizing model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR). METHODS We retrospectively examined 14 patients (65.5 ± 13.9 years) who underwent both standard-radiation-dose CT (SD-CT) reconstructed with hybrid iterative reconstruction and LD-CT of cervical spine. The radiation dose, objective image quality indicator, which includes signal-to-noise and contrast-to-noise, and subjective image quality score of the anatomical landmarks in the SD-CT and LD-CT were statistically compared. In addition, the measurement errors of the length of C3 vertebrae (height, anteroposterior length, inner and outer pedicle diameters) between SD-CT and LD-CT were analyzed. RESULTS Radiation dose of LD-CT was reduced to one-sixth of the dose of SD-CT. The objective image quality indicator of LD-CT was significantly better than that of SD-CT. The subjective image quality of LD-CT was relatively worse than that of SD-CT but generally graded as clinically accepted or higher. There was no remarkable difference between SD-CT and LD-CT in the measurement value of height and anteroposterior length. Inner pedicle diameter was significantly (0.21 ± 0.13 mm) smaller, and outer pedicle diameter was (0.24 ± 0.14 mm) larger on LD-CT than on SD-CT. CONCLUSION Cervical spinal LD-CT that utilized MBIR enabled radical decrease in radiation dose and provided sufficient image quality for clinical use. This scanning protocol can be a good alternative for protecting patients from exposure to unnecessary radiation, especially when a patient requires multiple CT scans.

Abstract
Modern lifestyles demand a number of products derived from petroleum-based sources that eventually cause carbon emissions. The quantification of lifestyle and household consumption impacts upon carbon emissions from both the embodied CO2 (EC) and materially retained carbon (MRC) viewpoints is critical to deriving amelioration policies and meeting emission reduction goals. This study, for the first time, details a methodology to estimate both EC and MRC for Japan, focusing on petrochemicals and woody products utilizing the time series input-output table, physical value tables and the national survey of family income and expenditure, leveraging time series input-output-based material flow analysis (IO-MFA), and structural decomposition analysis (SDA). Findings elucidated hot spots of deleterious consumption by age of householder and the critical factors which underpin them including intensity effects, pattern effects, and demographic shifts over time. Although demographic shifts associated with an aging, shrinking population in Japan decreased EC and MRC, the negative effect reduced in size over time during 1990-2005. Policy implications identify the potential to mitigate approximately 21% of required household emission reductions by 2030 through strategies including recycling initiatives and the recovery of carbon from products covered within current recycling laws and hot spot sectors which are not currently considered such as apparel.

Abstract
We investigated the causes and trends of incidents related to radiography. From April 2014 to March 2016, 384 incident reports related to radiography were posted. We analyzed based on the nature of the incidents and the experience period of radiological technologist (RT). The types of incidents were 'Incorrect examination order by medical doctor' (50.0%), 'X-ray retake' (24%), 'Incorrect examination procedure' (9.9%), 'Fall or injury of the patient under examination' (3.6%), 'selection error of X-ray detector' (3.1%), 'patient mismatch' (1.8%), 'overdose' (1.3%), and 'others' (a malfunctioning device, trouble of systems and the other) (6.5%). There was no relationship between the number of incidents per person and the experience period as RT; (7.8/person for <3 years of experience, 9.7/person for 3-10 years, 6.4/person for 11-25 years of experience, 7.4/person for <25 years of experience). The experience period as RT are related to some types of incident reduction. 'Fall or injury of the patient under examination' and 'overdose' were more frequently reported by RTs of shorter experience (<3 years and 3-10 years of experience) than RTs of longer experience (11-25 years and <25 of experience). On the other hand, 'patient mismatch' and 'selection error of X-ray detector' were more frequently reported by RTs of long experience than RTs of short experience.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of positron emission tomography (PET) metabolic parameters—namely metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG), and total lesion retention (TLR)—on fluorine-18 (18F) fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and L- [3-18F]-α-methyltyrosine (18F-FAMT) PET/CT in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods The study group comprised 112 NSCLC patients who underwent 18F-FDG and 18F-FAMT PET/CT prior to any therapy. The MTV, TLG, TLR, and maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of the primary tumors were determined. Automatic MTV measurement was performed using PET volume computer assisted reading software. (GE Healthcare). Cox proportional hazards models were built to assess the prognostic value of MTV, TLG (for 18F-FDG), TLR (for 18F-FAMT), SUVmax, T stage, N stage, M stage, clinical stage, age, sex, tumor histological subtype, and treatment method (surgery or other therapy) on overall survival (OS). Results Higher TNM, higher clinical stage, inoperable status, and higher values for all PET parameters (both 18F-FAMT and 18F-FDG PET) were significantly associated (P < 0.05) with shorter OS. Multivariate analysis revealed that a higher MTV of 18F-FAMT (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.88, CI: 1.63–5.09, P < 0.01) and advanced clinical stage (HR: 5.36, CI: 1.88–15.34, P < 0.01) were significant predictors of shorter OS. Conclusions MTV of 18F-FAMT is of prognostic value for OS in NSCLC cases and can help guide decision-making during patient management.

Abstract
Direct measurement of each patient organ dose from computed tomography (CT) is not possible. Most methods to estimate patient organ dose is using Monte Carlo simulation with dedicated software. However, the method and the relative differences between organ dose simulation and measurement is unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare organ doses evaluated by Monte Carlo simulation with doses evaluated by in-phantom dosimetry. The simulation software Radimetrics (Bayer) was used for the calculation of organ dose. Measurement was performed with radio-photoluminescence glass dosimeter (RPLD) set at various organ positions within RANDO phantom. To evaluate difference of CT scanner, two different CT scanners were used in this study. Angular dependence of RPLD and measurement of effective energy were performed for each scanner. The comparison of simulation and measurement was evaluated by relative differences. In the results, angular dependence of RPLD at two scanners was 31.6±0.45 mGy for SOMATOM Definition Flash and 29.2±0.18 mGy for LightSpeed VCT. The organ dose was 42.2 mGy (range, 29.9-52.7 mGy) by measurements and 37.7 mGy (range, 27.9-48.1 mGy) by simulations. The relative differences of organ dose between measurement and simulation were 13%, excluding of breast's 42%. We found that organ dose by simulation was lower than by measurement. In conclusion, the results of relative differences will be useful for evaluating organ doses for individual patients by simulation software Radimetrics.

Abstract
To achieve the goals of Paris Agreement, global society is directing much effort in substantially reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In addition to energy-related efforts, prevention of carbon release into the atmosphere with carbon capture and storage (CCS) and/or utilization of biomass resources is considered indispensable to achieving the global objective. In this study, considering carbon-containing goods as carbon reservoirs in our society similar to forests and reservoirs enabling CCS, the flow of materially utilized carbon was quantified by input-output-based material flow analysis (IO-MFA). As a result, in 2011, 6.3 Mt-C of petroleum-derived carbon and 7.9 Mt-C of wood-derived carbon were introduced to the Japanese society as end-use products (e.g., automobiles and constructions) in various forms (e.g., plastics and synthetic rubbers). The total amount (14.2 Mt-C) corresponded to 4.1% (52.1 Mt-CO2) of annual CO2 emission in Japan in 2011. Subsequently, by referring to the technology that can treat carbon in the target forms in end-of-life products, the recoverability of carbon as a material has been discussed with respect to each form and end-use of carbon. By numerically showing the necessity and potential of implementing appropriate technologies, this study provides scientific direction for policymakers to establish a quality carbon cycle in our society.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop a new and simple methodology for calculating mean size-specific dose estimates (SSDE) over the entire scan range (mSSDE) from weight and volume CT dose index (CTDIvol). We retrospectively analyzed data from a dose index registry. Scan areas were divided into two regions: chest and abdomen-pelvis. The original mSSDE was calculated by a commercially available software. The conversion formulas for mSSDE were estimated from weight and CTDIvol (SSDEweight) in each region. SSDEweight were compared with the original mSSDE using Bland-Altman analysis. Root mean square differences were 1.4 mGy for chest and 1.5 mGy for abdomen-pelvis. Our method using formulae can calculate SSDEweight using weight and CTDIvol without a dedicated software, and can be used to calculate DRL to optimize CT exposure doses.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the dose reduction of radiologists by using angular beam modulation (ABM) and radiation protection drape during computed tomography (CT) fluoroscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS The phantom was set on the lower that is 15 cm from the isocenter position. We measured the radiation exposure around the phantom with radiophotoluminescence glass dosimeters. The space radiation dose rate was measured with an ionization chamber dosimeter in the CT room. RESULTS The dose rate of finger radiation exposure was 67% at assumed assist tool position with ABM. And the dose rate of finger radiation exposure with the combination of ABM and radiation protection drape was 33%. The space dose rate of exposure with the combination of ABM and radiation protection drape was 49% at 150 cm. CONCLUSION The combination of ABM and radiation protection drape can reduce finger radiation exposure at assumed assist tool position. The space dose rate of the standing position of radiologists can get a clear dose of radiation reduction by the combination of both.

Abstract
Direct measurement of each patient organ dose from computed tomography (CT) is not possible. Most methods to estimate patient organ dose is using Monte Carlo simulation with dedicated software. However, dedicated software is too expensive for small scale hospitals. Not every hospital can estimate organ dose with dedicated software. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the simple method of organ dose estimation using some common indices of CT dose. The Monte Carlo simulation software Radimetrics (Bayer) was used for calculating organ dose and analysis relationship between indices of CT dose and organ dose. Multidetector CT scanners were compared with those from two manufactures (LightSpeed VCT, GE Healthcare; SOMATOM Definition Flash, Siemens Healthcare). Using stored patient data from Radimetrics, the relationships between indices of CT dose and organ dose were indicated as each formula for estimating organ dose. The accuracy of estimation method of organ dose was compared with the results of Monte Carlo simulation using the Bland-Altman plots. In the results, SSDE was the feasible index for estimation organ dose in almost organs because it reflected each patient size. The differences of organ dose between estimation and simulation were within 23%. In conclusion, our estimation method of organ dose using indices of CT dose is convenient for clinical with accuracy.

Abstract
Importance of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) as an urban mine is expected to grow, as more people in developing countries are experiencing increased standards of living, while the automobiles are increasingly made using high-quality materials to meet stricter environmental and safety requirements. While most materials in ELVs, particularly steel, have been recycled at high rates, quality issues have not been adequately addressed due to the complex use of automobile materials, leading to considerable losses of valuable alloying elements. This study highlights the maximal potential of quality-oriented recycling of ELV steel, by exploring the utilization methods of scrap, sorted by parts, to produce electric-arc-furnace-based crude alloy steel with minimal losses of alloying elements. Using linear programming on the case of Japanese economy in 2005, we found that adoption of parts-based scrap sorting could result in the recovery of around 94-98% of the alloying elements occurring in parts scrap (manganese, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum), which may replace 10% of the virgin sources in electric arc furnace-based crude alloy steel production.

Abstract
Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) is a method of analyzing restricted diffusion. Mean kurtosis (MK) is obtained from DKI. It is not known how different MRI scanners and coil systems will change MK when the same imaging parameters are used. The purpose of this study is to identify tendencies in MK when using various MRI scanners and coil systems. A total of 27 healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. DKI was performed on the brain for each volunteer on five MRI scanner/coil system combinations using the same scan parameters. MK of 10 anatomical areas of the brain were compared, and the signal-noise ratios (SNRs) of b-2000 s/mm2 images were measured in identical areas. There were no significant differences among MKs from multi transmit (MT) MRI systems, but MK was significantly lower on the single transmit MRI system because of pepper artifact caused by low SNR. In conclusion, we found no significant differences in MK among MT systems, and MK was significantly lower without MT.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to reveal the optimal function for regression of spectral Hounsfield Unit (HU) curves. The optimization procedure consists of the following steps: 1) obtaining dual energy CT (DECT) images of the RMI 467 phantom, 2) obtaining virtual monochromatic images from DECT images, 3) mapping each region of interest (ROI) to a phantom rod on virtual monochromatic images, 4) obtaining spectral HU curves for all rods, 5) regression of spectral HU curves using various functions, including linear, quadratic polynomial, cubic polynomial, quartic polynomial, quintic polynomial, sextic polynomial, septic polynomial, exponential, corrected exponential, bi-exponential, and logarithm, and 6) calculating the coefficients and the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) of the functions listed above. Results indicated that the quintic polynomial function is suitable for analyzing the regression of spectral HU curves. The coefficients generated by the quartic or higher order polynomial functions were significantly higher than those generated by other functions (p<0.05). The median AIC of the quintic polynomial was the lowest among all functions. Therefore, we conclude that the quintic polynomial is the best function to use for the regression of spectral HU curves.

Abstract
Mycobacterium orygis, commonly known as the oryx bacillus and a newly proposed Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex subspecies, was isolated from 18 cattle in a dairy farm and two captured rhesus monkeys in a zoo in Bangladesh. All the infected animals had tuberculosis lesions in their lungs, suggesting transmission and infection with M. orygis by an airborne route. The 20 isolates were analysed using a range of conventional and molecular typing methods, and RD-deletion typing and sequencing of selected genes confirmed the isolates as M. orygis. Multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) allowed the isolates to be divided into three clusters based on the relatedness of their MLVA profiles. The two monkey isolates shared the same MLVA pattern with 15 of the cattle isolates, whereas the remaining three cattle isolates had different patterns, even though the latter animals had been kept in the same dairy farm. The diversity observed among isolates may suggest the bacteria have been established in this area for a long period. This study along with other recent findings that report the detection of M. orygis from animals as well as humans originating from South Asia potentially indicate endemic distribution of M. orygis in South Asia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the incidence and types of sensation of smell and taste during i.v. injection of five kinds of contrast media (CM) in CT examinations. METHODS 735 patients who underwent contrast-enhanced CT (CE-CT) between 14 March 2016 and 5 April 2016 were enrolled. Medical staff asked patients whether they felt heat sensation and sensation of smell and taste during i.v. injection of CM (one of the following: iopromide, iomeprol, iopamidol, iohexol and ioversol) after their CE-CT. If the patients stated having felt the sensation of smell or taste, they were also asked what kind of smell or taste they sensed. Next, 30 ml of each CM was poured into high-purity pet cups for radiological technologists to smell directly. Radiological technologists were asked whether or not each CM had any smell. RESULTS The sensations of smell and taste incidence for iopromide were 24.3% and 18.9%, respectively, which were significantly higher than those for other CM (p < 0.05). The highest incidence of the sensation of smell was medicine-ish, and the most frequently noted taste was bitterness. All radiological technologists could directly smell only iopromide, which has an ether group on a side chain and fewer hydroxyl groups. CONCLUSION Iopromide showed a higher incidence of sensation of smell and taste than other CM. Advances in knowledge: This was the first investigation of sensation of smell and taste during i.v. injection of CM, and a specific CM showed a higher incidence, which is suspected to be due to its chemical structure.

Abstract
The neuromodulator acetylcholine (ACh) is considered to have a crucial effect on sensory inputs in the process of learning and memory, and ACh activates muscarinic (mAChR) and nicotinic (nAChR) acetylcholine receptors. Meanwhile in a hippocampal CA1 network including inhibitory connections, long-term potentiation (LTP) or long-term depression (LTD) is induced by the application of positive timing of the spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) protocol, while LTD is induced by negative timing protocol. In the previous study, the influence of ACh on LTD induced by the negative timing protocol application in the interneuron-blocked CA1 network was reported. However, the responsibility of mAChR and nAChR on pyramidal neuron and interneuron on STDP induction is still unclear. In order to clarify the role of AChRs in LTD, positive or negative timing protocol was applied in the interneuron-activated CA1 network in the presence of eserine. Consequently, the LTD induced by the positive timing protocol was switched to LTP, and the LTD by negative timing protocol was shifted toward potentiation when ACh was effective. The STDP facilitation was more effectively brought by mAChR activation on pyramidal neuron than nAChR, while mAChR on interneuron had a potential to down regulate the facilitation. These findings suggest that the direction (LTD/LTP) of STDP is determined by the activation of mAChR not only on pyramidal neuron but also on interneuron, and the magnitude of STDP is sensitively fine-tuned by nAChR. Therefore, the modulation of synaptic plasticity induced by the coactivation of mAChR and nAChR might be an important stage in integrating ACh and sensory inputs in the hippocampal CA1 network.

Abstract
UNLABELLED We estimated the number of hip fracture patients in 2012 in Japan and investigated the trends in incidence during a 25-year period from 1987 to 2012. Despite the increasing number of patients, the incidence of hip fracture in both men and women aged 70-79 years showed the possibility of decline. INTRODUCTION The objectives of this study were to estimate the number of hip fracture patients in 2012, to investigate the trends in incidence during a 25-year period from 1987 to 2012, and to determine the regional differences in Japan. METHODS Data were collected through a nationwide survey based on hospitals by a mail-in survey. Hip fracture incidences by sex and age and standardized incidence ratios by region were calculated. RESULTS The estimated numbers of new hip fracture patients in 2012 were 175,700 in total (95 % CI 170,300-181,100), 37,600 (36,600-38,600) for men and 138,100 (134,300-141,900) for women. The incidence rates in both men and women aged 70-79 years were the lowest in the 20-year period from 1992 to 2012. The incidence was higher in western areas of Japan than that in eastern areas in both men and women; however, the difference in the incidence of hip fracture between western and eastern areas is becoming smaller. CONCLUSIONS Despite the increasing number of new patients, the incidence of hip fracture in both men and women aged 70-79 years showed the possibility of decline. The exact reasons for this are unknown, but various drugs for improving bone mineral density or preventing hip fracture might have influenced the results. A decrease in the differences in nutrient intake levels might explain some of the change in regional differences in Japan.

Abstract
PURPOSE The contrast agent used in the diagnostic department has high atomic numbers and might influence dose deposition in the particle therapy. In particular, the influence of gadolinium-based (Gd) contrast agent on range in carbon ion radiotherapy has not yet been evaluated. For this reason, we avoid carbon treatment and planning computed tomography (CT) acquisition on days when the contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance image (MRI) is performed. In this study, we evaluated the time required for this beam range effect to vanish by evaluating the temporal changes in the CT values after an enhanced MRI as well as the stopping power of Gd solution. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two types of diluted solutions with Gd contrast agent were used for comparing their transferred stopping power (TSP) and measured stopping power (MSP). The TSP was calculated with a CT value to stopping power ratio table that was created previously. Additionally, to evaluate in vivo attenuation, we measured the CT values in the renal pelvis from the CT images with and without contrast agent for 73 patients. RESULTS The maximum difference between the TSP and MSP was 85%. The difference between the TSP after 4 hours and the TSP with non-enhanced cases was less than 1%. Moreover, the difference between the MSP after 1 hour and the MSP with non-enhanced cases was less than 0.1%. CONCLUSION It was found that the impact of Gd contrast agent can be neglected 1 hour after administration for carbon beam irradiation and 4 hours after for planning the CT image acquisition.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to verify the usefulness for the dose optimisation of setting a diagnostic reference level (DRL) based on the results of a prefecture-wide multi-centre radiation dose survey and providing data feedback. All hospitals/clinics in the authors' prefecture with computed tomography (CT) scanners were requested to report data. The first survey was done in July 2011, and the results of dose-length products (DLPs) for each CT scanner were fed back to all hospitals/clinics, with DRL set from all the data. One year later, a second survey was done in the same manner. The medians of DLP in the upper abdomen, whole body and coronary CT in 2012 were significantly smaller than those of the 2011 survey. The interquartile ranges of DLP in the head, chest, pelvis and coronary CT were also smaller in 2012. Radiation dose survey with data feedback may be helpful for CT dose optimisation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rikkunshito, a standardized Japanese herbal medicine, is thought to accelerate gastric emptying and relieve dyspepsia, although no large-scale, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of rikkunshito have been conducted. This study aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of rikkunshito for treating functional dyspepsia (FD). METHODS FD patients received 2.5 g rikkunshito or placebo three times a day for 8 weeks in this multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial. The primary end point was the proportion of responders at 8 weeks after starting test drug, determined by global patient assessment (GPA). The improvement in four major dyspepsia symptoms severity scale was also evaluated. In addition, plasma ghrelin levels were investigated before and after treatment. KEY RESULTS Two hundred forty-seven patients were randomly assigned. In the eighth week, the rikkunshito group had more GPA responders (33.6%) than the placebo (23.8%), although this did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.09). Epigastric pain was significantly improved (p = 0.04) and postprandial fullness tended to improve (p = 0.06) in the rikkunshito group at week 8. Rikkunshito was relatively more effective among Helicobacter pylori-infected participants (rikkunshito: 40.0% vs placebo: 20.5%, p = 0.07), and seemed less effective among H. pylori-uninfected participants (rikkunshito: 29.3% vs placebo: 25.6%, p = 0.72). Among H. pylori-positive individuals, acyl ghrelin levels were improved just in rikkunshito group. There were no severe adverse events in both groups. CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES Administration of rikkunshito for 8 weeks reduced dyspepsia, particularly symptoms of epigastric pain and postprandial fullness.
