Evaluation of thirst severity, death anxiety, and complementary and supportive therapy use as predictors of urinary incontinence-related quality of life in older adults

PURPOSE

This correlational survey study aimed to evaluate thirst severity, death anxiety, and the use of complementary and supportive therapy as predictors of urinary incontinence-related quality of life in older adults.

METHODS

The study included 368 participants aged 60 or older. Data were collected by face-to-face interviews using a participant information form, the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF), Visual Analog Scale for thirst severity, Death Anxiety Scale, a modified version of the Mini Mental State Examination, and questions about their use of complementary and supportive therapies.

RESULTS

The participants had a mean age of 70.5 ± 6.9 years (54.9% female). Mean ICIQ-SF score was significantly correlated with daytime frequency of urine leakage and thirst severity score. Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that thirst severity was a significant predictor of urinary incontinence-related quality of life. Most of the older adults said they had never used complementary or supportive therapies for urinary incontinence.

CONCLUSION

Thirst severity should be assessed in older adults with urinary incontinence in addition to other factors that may affect ICIQ-SF scores.

Feelings, Difficulties and Attitudes in relation to Fasting: A Qualitative Study on Spiritual Coping Among Turkish Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

This study aims to reveal the feelings, difficulties, attitudes, and spiritual coping status of Turkish patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus toward fasting during Ramadan. The sample of this descriptive qualitative study consists of 14 patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. We determined two main themes and relevant sub-themes. The first was "the feelings and difficulties experienced due to diabetes mellitus" with the sub-themes of "negative emotions" and "difficulties in fasting." The second theme was identified as "religious and spiritual coping" with the sub-themes of "believing the disease comes from God," "having difficulty in adhering to disease-specific practices while fasting," and "feeling that fasting facilitates coping and provides relief." In conclusion, it was determined that the patients continued to fast despite the difficulties and that fasting facilitated coping and provided relaxation.

Determining the Relationship Between Intolerance of Uncertainty and Attitudes Toward Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Patients With Cancer

Disease-related uncertainty and the factors associated with uncertainty in patients with cancer have not been adequately investigated. This study aimed to determine the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and attitudes toward complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in patients with cancer. This cross-sectional descriptive study included 351 patients treated in the oncology clinic of a university hospital. All participants completed the Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire (HCAMQ) and the 12-item Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS-12). Most patients (84.3%) said that they had information about CAM, 39.7% reported obtaining this information from their social environment, 83.2% said that they believed that CAM methods are effective, and 76.0% reported not telling health care professionals about their CAM use. Mean IUS-12 and HCAMQ total scores were 46.53 ± 2.05 and 32.11 ± 2.32, respectively, and showed a weak negative correlation. The patients in our study showed high intolerance of uncertainty and a moderately positive attitude toward CAM, and most patients did not notify health care professionals of their CAM use. Therefore, we recommend assessing intolerance of uncertainty and CAM use in this patient group. By identifying patients experiencing uncertainty and seeking different treatment, nurses can support patients physiologically, psychologically, and socially, and can explain the effects of CAM use.

Determining the relationship between spirituality and perceptions of care in nursing students: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Caring is a core value in nursing education and many of its features can be measured as specific behaviors. It is not clear how nurses' spirituality affects their caring behavior.

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between spirituality and spiritual care and nursing students' perceptions of care.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study sample consisted of 467 students in the nursing department of a university in Northeastern Anatolia. Data were collected using a descriptive information form, the Care Assessment Report Evaluation Q-sort (CARE-Q), and the Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale (SSCRS). Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, t-test, analysis of variance, and Kruskal-Wallis H, Mann-Whitney U, correlation, and regression tests.

RESULTS

The mean age of the participants was 21.14 ± 1.97 years, 55.0% were women, and 63.0% said that nursing was their preferred profession. Most of the students rated their knowledge of spirituality and spiritual care as adequate (17.6%) or partially adequate (48.0%). CARE-Q and SSCRS scores were significantly higher among female students who chose a career in nursing to help people, want to obtain their master's degree, and agreed that providing care is nurses' primary duty (p < 0.05). There was a weak positive correlation between CARE-Q and SSCRS scores (p < 0.001; r = 0.369).

CONCLUSION

There was a significant relationship between CARE-Q and SSCRS scores (p < 0.05).

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

To promote holistic care, nursing students should be provided training on spirituality and spiritual care, with emphasis on the role of nurses in care.

Experiences of nurses working with COVID-19 patients: A qualitative study

BACKGROUND

The global COVID-19 pandemic has led to massive disruptions in daily life, business, education, lifestyle and economies worldwide. Nurses are a professional group who care directly for COVID-19 patients and thus face direct exposure to the virus. The nurses who work on the front lines during this period put their own well-being at risk to care for these patients.

PURPOSE/AIM

The aim of this study was to identify the experiences and challenges faced by nurses working in pandemic clinics in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

This qualitative study was based on semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted through the mobile application Whatsapp with 19 nurses who were actively working in pandemic clinics. Due to the pandemic, the snowball sampling method was used to reach the sample group. Interviews were continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were audio recorded and later transcribed. The study data were interpreted according to themes identified using thematic analysis. Throughout the study, the authors followed the COREQ checklist.

RESULTS

The experiences of nurses caring for COVID-19 patients were summarised into five major themes: psychosocial adaptation, protection, difficulty in care and treatment, access to information and working conditions.

CONCLUSION

Nurses caring for COVID-19 patients in Turkey have been affected psychologically, socially and physiologically. They experienced stigmatisation, exhaustion and burnout. One of the biggest challenges for the nurses was difficulty providing physical care and treatment due to the use of personal protective equipment. Nurses want improved compensation in addition to applause from the public. Interventions to help bolster nurses' psychological and physiological strength are recommended.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

This study emphasised nurses' psychologically, socially and physiologically affected. Therefore, improvements in financial and moral support would provide psychological reinforcement for nurses during the epidemic. Informing the public is necessary to reduce the stigmatisation of nurses working in pandemic clinics.

The Knowledge of Nursing Students About Organ Donation and the Effect of the Relevant Training on Their Knowledge

BACKGROUND

The positive attitude of nursing students toward organ donation will affect the number of transplantations to be performed in the future. This study was conducted to determine the knowledge of the students studying at Kafkas University Faculty of Health Sciences Nursing Department on organ donation and the effect of the relevant training on their knowledge.

METHOD

This study with a pretest-post-test design was completed with 352 nursing department students in the 2016-2017 academic year. A total of 45 minutes of structured training was provided to the students by a physician who was trained and experienced on organ transplantation. A pretest and post-test form was used to evaluate the knowledge of the students before and after the training, respectively. Data were analyzed by evaluating the numbers, percentages, and significance of the difference between 2 percentages in the SPSS 20 software.

RESULTS

The mean age of the students was 21.25 ± 1.89 years; 52% were male, 31.8% were first-year students. We found that a relative of 6.5% of the students was waiting for an organ and the ethnic identity did not affect the decision of organ donation in 69.9%. When asked about who could be organ donors, 71.9% of the students answered as cadaver and living donors where blood and tissues were found to be a match, 33.5% as the first-degree relatives of the patient, and 18.5% as cadaver donors. Head trauma-related brain death was the most common answer to "In which case can organs be taken?" at 75.9%. The percentage of students stating that the donor can donate his or her organs in accordance with the law while he or she is healthy and that organ donation can be made with the consent of the family after death was 67.9%. We found that the students' wish to donate their organs and their knowledge on where and how to make an organ donation and how to get official approval increased significantly as a result of this training in addition to the number of those who had no reservations regarding brain death.

CONCLUSION

We recommend providing nursing students regular training on organ donation with various training methods and conducting further studies on the subject.

Methemoglobinemia incidence after the application of lidocaine for small surgical procedures

OBJECTIVES

Methemoglobinemia (MetHb) is a rare condition that may have mortal consequences. Literature shows cases of methemoglobinemia due to the use of lidocaine and other local anesthetics. This is a cross-sectional study to determine the incidence of methemoglobinemia after the application of lidocaine.

METHODS

In this study, 88 patients admitted to the emergency department of a university hospital between May 2014 and May 2015 and needed lidocaine application for small surgical procedures were included. When compared before and after the administration of lidocaine <2 mg/kg and >2 mg/kg, there was not a significant difference in the level of methemoglobin, hemoglobin, or in the hematocrit (p=0.604, p=0.502, and p=0.367, respectively).

RESULTS

Mean age of the patients was 33.85 (±17.58) years, and 83% of the patients were male. Methemoglobin levels were not significantly different before and after the procedures (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION

The results of our study were consistent with the literature; lidocaine associated methemoglobinemia is a rare complication.

Effectiveness of a multistimulant home-based program on cognitive function of older adults

The purpose of this study was to test the effects of a multistimulant home-based program on cognitive function among older adults. This study was conducted in northeastern Turkey between March and June 2010. It was planned as an experimental versus control two-group design and carried out on 96 (intervention group = 48, control group = 48) participants. The intervention and control groups were similar regarding sex, education, partner status, and continuous drug use. Data were collected with a Standardized Mini Mental Test, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and the Beck Anxiety Scale. Each senior received a total of 10 home visits on a once-per-week basis. Results for the intervention group showed that the Mini Mental State Test scores of the participants had statistically increased, and the Beck Anxiety and the GDS scores showed a decrease. The study found an association between the multistimulant home-based intervention program and cognitive function.

The Effectiveness of a Stimulation Program on Cognitive Capacity Among Individuals Older Than 60

The purpose of this study was to test the effects of a multistimulant home-based intervention program on cognitive function, anxiety, and depression among older adults with cognitive impairment. This research is quasi-experimental and was designed in an effort to increase the cognitive capacity of individuals above the age of 60 with reduced cognitive capacities. Each senior received a total of seven home visits, including intervention conversation, newspaper/ book reading, painting/handcraft activities, and physical exercise. The Mini Mental State Test scores of the participants statistically increased, whereas the Beck Anxiety and the Geriatric Depression Scale scores showed a decrease ( p < .05) after the intervention. Findings demonstrate that the multistimulant approach to improve cognitive capacity among individuals older than 60 years was successful.
