Abstract
OBJECTIVES The lack of agreement regarding assessment methods is responsible for the variability in the reported rate of occurrence of spatial neglect after stroke. The aim of this study was to assess the sensitivity of different tests of neglect after right hemisphere stroke. METHODS Two hundred and six subacute right hemisphere stroke patients were given a test battery including a preliminary assessment of anosognosia and of visual extinction, a clinical assessment of gaze orientation and of personal neglect, and paper and pencil tests of spatial neglect in the peripersonal space. Patients were compared with a previously reported control group. A subgroup of patients (n=69) received a behavioural assessment of neglect in daily life situations. RESULTS The most sensitive paper and pencil measure was the starting point in the cancellation task. The whole battery was more sensitive than any single test alone. About 85% of patients presented some degree of neglect on at least one measure. An important finding was that behavioural assessment of neglect in daily life was more sensitive than any other single measure of neglect. Behavioural neglect was considered as moderate to severe in 36% of cases. A factorial analysis revealed that paper and pencil tests were related to two underlying factors. Dissociations were found between extrapersonal neglect, personal neglect, anosognosia, and extinction. Anatomical analyses showed that neglect was more common and severe when the posterior association cortex was damaged. CONCLUSIONS The automatic rightward orientation bias is the most sensitive clinical measure of neglect. Behavioural assessment is more sensitive than any single paper and pencil test. The results also support the assumption that neglect is a heterogeneous disorder.

Abstract
Interferometric near-field optical microscopy achieving a resolution of 10 angstroms is demonstrated. The scattered electric field variation caused by a vibrating probe tip in close proximity to a sample surface is measured by encoding it as a modulation in the optical phase of one arm of an interferometer. Unlike in regular near-field optical microscopes, where the contrast results from a weak source (or aperture) dipole interacting with the polarizability of the sample, the present form of imaging relies on a fundamentally different contrast mechanism: sensing the dipole-dipole coupling of two externally driven dipoles (the tip and sample dipoles) as their spacing is modulated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Comparatively little research has been conducted on right neglect after left brain damage. The authors sought to assess contralateral neglect in subacute left hemisphere stroke patients using a comprehensive test battery validated in a large control group after right hemisphere stroke. METHODS Seventy-eight left hemisphere stroke patients were assessed. The test battery included a preliminary assessment of anosognosia and visual extinction, a clinical assessment of gaze orientation and personal neglect, and paper-and-pencil tests of spatial neglect in the peripersonal space. Only nonverbal tests were used. RESULTS Drawing and cancellation tasks revealed neglect in 10 to 13% of patients. The combined battery was more sensitive than any single test alone. A total of 43.5% of patients showed some degree of neglect on at least one measure. Anatomic analyses showed that neglect was more common and severe when the posterior association cortex was damaged. CONCLUSIONS The frequency of occurrence of right neglect was, as expected, much lower than that reported in a study using the same assessment battery in right brain damage stroke patients. Nevertheless, neglect was found in a substantial proportion of patients at a subacute stage, suggesting that it should be considered in the rehabilitation planning of left brain damage stroke patients.

Abstract
Phylogenetic relationships among 18 species of mainly European muroid rodents that belong to three subfamilies were estimated using complete sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. The inferred monophyly of the subfamilies Murinae (mice and rats) and Arvicolinae (voles, lemmings, and muskrats) is in agreement with previous studies. Within the Murinae, the morphology-based division of the genus Apodemus into three subgenera is supported by these DNA sequence data. The relationships among the different genera of the Murinae were generally poorly resolved, and the relationships of Micromys and Acomys to the other murine genera remained unresolved. Within the subfamily Arvicolinae, the relations of the genera Arvicola, Clethrionomys, and Microtus remained tentative with our data. However, within the Microtus group, there is a good molecular support for the phylogenetic relationships. These findings suggest that the origin of the different murine and arvicoline lineages was rapid, indicating an adaptive radiation with fast speciation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to evaluate both nonoccupational and occupational factors associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in industrial workers. METHODS Sixty-five workers with CTS were compared with 65 referents matched for gender, age, and plant. The medical history and household activities of the workers and the ergonomic and organizational characteristics of the job were analyzed. RESULTS Exertion of force over 1 kg was associated with CTS [odds ratio (OR) 9.0]. Two risk factors were related to motion repetitiveness: length of the shortest elementary operation of < or = 10 s (OR 8.8) and lack of change in tasks or lack of breaks for at least 15% of the daily worktime (OR 6.0). No posture of the upper limb was associated with CTS. Workstation design involving the manual supply of the workers (OR 5.0) and the lack of job rotation (OR 6.3) were associated with CTS. The only personal factor associated with CTS was a parity of at least 3 (OR 3.2). There was a continuous increase in the odds ratio against the number of risk factors accumulated by the workers; the odds ratio thus ranged from 5.6 when 3 of the 6 risk factors were present to > or = 90 when 4, 5, or 6 risk factors were accumulated. CONCLUSIONS The results were in agreement with a model for CTS which included 1 personal and 5 occupational risk factors. The number of risk factors cumulated by the workers seems to be a major determinant of CTS.

Abstract
Recent reports have provided evidence of a link between the endogenous brain cannabinoid system and the endogenous central opioid systems. Here we report that the selective CB1 receptor antagonist SR 141716A induced behavioral and endocrine alterations associated with opiate withdrawal in morphine-dependent animals in a dose-dependent manner and that naloxone induced an opiate withdrawal syndrome in animals made cannabinoid-dependent by repeated administration of the potent cannabinoid agonist HU-210. Additionally CB1 and mu-opioid receptor mRNAs were co-localized in brain areas relevant for opiate withdrawal such as the nucleus accumbens, septum, dorsal striatum, the central amygdaloid nucleus and the habenular complex. These results suggest that CB1 cannabinoid receptors may play a role in the neuroadaptive processes associated with opiate dependence, and they lend further support for the hypothesis of a potential role of cannabinoid receptors in the neurobiological changes that culminate in drug addiction.

Abstract
All patients positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at the University Hospitals of Geneva, Switzerland, between 1989 and 1997 (N = 1771) were included in a cohort study to evaluate the consequences of delayed containment of a hospital-wide outbreak occurring during a 4-year absence of MRSA control measures. The effects of efforts to control both the MRSA reservoir and the number of bacteraemic patients were assessed. Intensive infection control measures were initiated in 1993 and included patient screening, on-site surveillance, contact isolation, a computerized alert system, and hospital-wide promotion of hand hygiene. An increase in the rate of new MRSA-infected or -colonized patients was observed between 1989 and 1994 (from 0.05 to 0.60 cases per 100 admissions), which subsequently decreased to 0.24 cases in 1997 (P<0.001). However, the proportion of laboratory-documented methicillin-resistant isolates among all S. aureus showed little variation in the years from 1993 onwards (range, 19-24%), reflecting the result of an increase in the number of screening cultures. The annual number of patients with MRSA bacteraemia strongly correlated with the hospital-wide prevalence of MRSA patients (R(2)= 0.60; P = 0.01) and the rate of new MRSA patients (R(2)= 0.97; P<0.001). Consequently, the attack rate of nosocomial MRSA bacteraemia served as an excellent marker for the MRSA patient reservoir. In conclusion, despite delayed implementation, infection control measures had a substantial impact on both the reservoir of MRSA patients and the attack rate of MRSA bacteraemia.

Abstract
The ability to perform two tasks simultaneously is a key function of the central executive of working memory (Baddeley, 1986). This study addressed dual-task performance after diffuse very severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) (mean coma duration = 21 days, mean post-traumatic amnesia = 70 days) or prefrontal damage due to a ruptured aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery (AACA). Mean time since injury was 8 and 16 months in the TBI and the AACA group respectively. A simple visual reaction time and random number generation were used as single and dual tasks. Randomization was self-paced, to control for individual differences in speed. Both patient groups had greater reaction time decrements than controls under the dual-task condition, suggesting a divided attention deficit. In addition, patients with AACA performed significantly poorer in random generation. These results suggest that patients with AACA and with severe TBI suffer from an impairment of the central executive system.

Abstract
There is increasing research exploring depression in carers of people with dementia. This study explored the relation of entrapment, shame and guilt to depression in a group of 70 carers of those with dementia. As in other studies the experience of entrapment in the role was highly related to depression. Moreover, experiences of shame relating to self-criticism, other people's expectations and the fear of their criticism were significantly related to depression, entrapment and guilt. Guilt however, as focused on the fears of harming others, letting others down and sense of responsibility, was not associated with depression or entrapment. Depression in carers may relate in part to feeling trapped in a role but also being vulnerable to criticism and feelings of inadequacy in that role. In this study, degree of behavioural disturbance/dependence was not found to be significantly associated with any of the research variables.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term outbreaks of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli related to hospital-building water systems have been described. However, successful mitigation strategies have rarely been reported. In particular, environmental disinfection or replacement of contaminated equipment usually failed to eradicate environmental sources of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. METHODS We report the investigation and termination of an outbreak of P. aeruginosa producing VIM carbapenemase (PA-VIM) in the adult intensive care unit (ICU) of a Swiss tertiary care hospital with active case finding, environmental sampling and whole genome sequencing (WGS) of patient and environmental strains. We also describe the implemented control strategies and their effectiveness on eradication of the environmental reservoir. RESULTS Between April 2018 and September 2020, 21 patients became either infected or colonized with a PA-VIM strain. For 16 of them, an acquisition in the ICU was suspected. Among 131 environmental samples collected in the ICU, 13 grew PA-VIM in sink traps and drains. WGS confirmed the epidemiological link between clinical and environmental strains and the monoclonal pattern of the outbreak. After removing sinks from patient rooms and implementation of waterless patient care, no new acquisition was detected in the ICU within 8 months after the intervention. DISCUSSION Implementation of waterless patient care with removal of the sinks in patient rooms was successful for termination of a PA-VIM ICU outbreak linked to multiple environmental water sources. WGS provides highly discriminatory accuracy to investigate environment-related outbreaks.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish which skin diseases occur in crocodiles, particularly those on farms, to indicate the relative frequency of each particular disease and to provide information on pathogenesis, especially in regard to lesions with two or more pathogens present. DESIGN A gross and microscopic retrospective (period of 1989 to 1995) and current (1996 to 1997) examination of skin lesions in crocodiles in Queensland and the Northern Territory. RESULT Skin lesions were obtained from crocodiles on nine farms, from a group of experimental animals and from one adult found dead in the wild. A total of 203 lesions from 180, mostly young, crocodiles was examined; 119 lesions were from retrospectively examined cases and 84 were recent. The relative frequencies of four presumed primary pathogens in lesions were Dermatophilus sp 28.1%, fungi 14.8%, poxvirus 3.4% and probable Mycobacterium sp 2.5%. In addition, other bacteria of unknown significance were present in many lesions, and there was one case of presumed Paratrichosoma crocodilus infection. In 32.5% of lesions, multiple pathogens were identified. CONCLUSION Dermatophilosis is the most common and probably the most important skin disease of crocodiles in Australia, but it is frequently complicated by concurrent infection with fungi or other microorganisms.

Abstract
Mass mortality by tissue necrosis of several species of gorgons was observed during the 1999 late summer on the Liguro-Provençal Mediterranean coasts. We have investigated the occurrence of vibrios on necrosis affected gorgonians Paramuricea clauata and Eunicella cavolinii, and their ability to induce tissue necrosis. Among the 11 strains tested, only 5, belonging to species Vibrio splendidus, V. pelagius and V. campbellii, were able to induce tissue necrosis in a few days. Temperature experiments carried out at 11 degrees C, 18 degrees C and 23 degrees C showed that necrotic disease may occur only at the higher temperature tested. Statistical analysis suggested that, for these thermical conditions, marine Vibrio strains can significantly speed up the necrotic crisis.

METHODS Twenty-one cases of RTS were compared with 21 referents matched for gender, age, and plant. RTS was associated with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in 9 cases. Past medical history, household activities, and ergonomic and organizational characteristics of the job were analyzed. RESULTS The study found 3 occupational risk factors for RTS. Exertion of force of over 1 kg [odds ratio (OR) 9.1, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.4-56.9] more than 10 times per hour was the main biomechanical risk factor. Prolonged static load applied to the hand during work was strongly associated with RTS (OR 5.9, 95% CI 1.2-29.9). Work posture with the elbow fully extended (0-45 degrees) was associated with RTS (OR 4.9, 95% CI 1.0-25.0). Full extension of the elbow, associated with a twisted posture of the forearm, stressed the radial nerve at the elbow. However, personal activities, household chores, and sport and leisure activities were not associated with RTS. CONCLUSIONS The study confirms that RTS occurs in workers performing hard manual labor that requires forceful and repetitive movements involving elbow extension and forearm prosupination.

Abstract
Autologous keratinocytes can be used to augment cutaneous repair, such as in the treatment of severe burns and recalcitrant ulcers. Such cells can be delivered to the wound bed either as a confluent sheet of cells or in single-cell suspension. The standard method for expanding primary human keratinocytes in culture uses lethally irradiated mouse 3T3 fibroblasts as feeder cells to support keratinocyte attachment and growth. In an effort to eliminate xenobiotic cells from clinical culture protocols where keratinocytes are applied to patients, we investigated whether human autologous primary fibroblasts could be used to expand keratinocytes in culture. At a defined ratio of a 6:1 excess of keratinocytes to fibroblasts, this co-culture method displayed a population doubling rate comparable to culture with lethally irradiated 3T3 cells. Furthermore, morphological and molecular analysis showed that human keratinocytes expanded in co-culture with autologous human fibroblasts were positive for proliferation markers and negative for differentiation markers. Keratinocytes expanded by this method thus retain their proliferative phenotype, an important feature in enhancing rapid wound closure. We suggest that this novel co-culture method is therefore suitable for clinical use as it dispenses with the need for lethally irradiated 3T3 cells in the rapid expansion of autologous human keratinocytes.

Abstract
Quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) of N-Ac amino acids, N-Ac dipeptides, and N-Ac tripeptides in inhibition of 125I-labeled ristocetin binding to Micrococcus luteus cell wall have been developed to probe the details of the binding between ristocetin and N-acetylated peptides. The correlation equations indicate that (1) the binding is stronger for peptides in which the side chain of the C-terminal amino acid has a large molar refractivity (MR) value, (2) the binding is weaker for peptides with polar than for those with nonpolar C-terminal side chains, (3) the N-terminal amino acid in N-Ac dipeptides contributes 12 times that of the C-terminal amino acid to binding affinity, and (4) the interactions between ristocetin and the N-terminal amino acid of N-acetyl tripeptides appear to be much weaker than those with the first two amino acids.

Abstract
Genetic disruption of the vomeronasal organ (VNO), an organ responsible for pheromone processing, drastically alters socio-sexual behavior in mice. However, it is not known whether the VNO has a role during the pubertal organizational period when sex-typical socio-sexual behaviors emerge, or if disruption of the organ in adulthood is sufficient to alter socio-sexual behavior. To bypass the lifelong VNO disruption of genetic knockout models, we surgically ablated the VNO of male and female mice either during the peripubertal period [postnatal day (PND) 28–30] or adulthood (PND 58–60), with sham controls at both ages. We ruled out anosmia via the buried food test and assessed sexual odor preferences by simultaneously exposing mice to same- and opposite-sex soiled-bedding. We then measured territorial aggression with the resident-intruder paradigm and assessed sexual behavior in response to an encounter with an estrus-induced female. Neural activity approximated by FOS-immunoreactivity along the VNO-accessory olfactory pathway was measured in response to opposite-sex odors. We found that peripubertal VNO ablation decreased sexual odor preferences and neural activity in response to opposite-sex odors, and drastically reduced territorial aggression in male mice. Conversely, adult VNO ablation resulted in subtle differences in sexual odor preferences compared with sham controls. Regardless of the VNO condition, mice displayed sex-typical copulatory behaviors. Together, these results suggest that puberty is a critical period in development whereby the VNO contributes to the sexual differentiation of behavior and neural response to conspecific odors.

Abstract
We report the observation of two-neutrino double-beta decay in (136)Xe with T(1/2) = 2.11 ± 0.04(stat) ± 0.21(syst) × 10(21) yr. This second-order process, predicted by the standard model, has been observed for several nuclei but not for (136)Xe. The observed decay rate provides new input to matrix element calculations and to the search for the more interesting neutrinoless double-beta decay, the most sensitive probe for the existence of Majorana particles and the measurement of the neutrino mass scale.

Abstract
Consequences of short-term changes in thermotolerant coliform loads on their spatio-temporal distribution in a Mediterranean lagoon with large-scale mollusk farming (Thau lagoon, France) were explored using a simulation approach. Simulations were based on bacterial transport and survival coupled models forced by the input of bacterial loads from the two main rivers (Vène and Pallas) that flow into the lagoon. Different flow types (reference, sudden and constant), bringing the same bacterial load, were considered and subsequent spatial and temporal bacterial contamination of lagoon surface water and shellfish was estimated. Simulation results showed that as long as loads were high, hydrodynamical processes governed the distribution of bacterial abundance in receiving areas. As soon as loads decreased or when time supply increased, biological die-off processes became dominant. Bacterial contamination of shellfish induced by the different flow types appeared to depend on the receiving area. In the case of Pallas River area, a sudden input of bacteria led to a high bacterial contamination of shellfish but only during a short period ( approximately 1 day). A constant input of the same amount of bacteria induced a lower but significant contamination during all the simulation period (10 days). On the contrary, bacterial inputs from the Vène River led to shellfish contamination only when bacteria were delivered through a flood event. Exposure time of bacteria to adverse environmental conditions appeared to be the main explanation to the above-mentioned differences. Consequences of our results in terms of environmental management strategy were discussed.

Abstract
STUDY The purpose of the study was to evaluate the professional and extraprofessional risk factors for radial tunnel syndrome (RTS) in employees of three large companies. METHOD Twenty-one cases of RTS were compared to 21 controls, matched for age, sex, and activity. In nine cases, RTS was associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. The analysis considered medical history, extraprofessional activity, and the ergonomic and organisational aspects of work. RESULTS The study demonstrated three risk factors of RTS related to work conditions. The regular use of a force of at least 1 kg (OR = 9.1 (1.4-56.9)) more than 10 times per hour is the main biomechanical risk factor. Static work (OR = 5.9 (1.2-29.9)) as well as work with the elbow constantly extended 0 degree to 45 degrees, is strongly associated with an increased risk of RTS (OR = 4.9 (1.0-25.0)). Complete extension of the elbow associated with pronation and supination of the forearm may cause trauma to the radial nerve in the radial tunnel. On the other hand, we found no personal factors and no extraprofessional activities which were associated with an increased risk of RTS. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that motions of the forearm requiring intense effort and performed with the elbow in extension and the forearm in pronation and supination increase the risk of RTS.

Background
Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) assists patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in improving physical activity and effectively managing their health conditions. With numerous clinical benefits including reduced risks of mortality (by 25%) and all-cause hospitalizations (by 18% - 25%), CR has been strongly recommended by evidence-based clinical guidelines for secondary prevention of CVD. However, many CR participant withdraw and hence fail to fully benefit from their CR programme. To address this issue, knowledge on risk stratification of patients' characteristics to appropriate CR care pathways is important.
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to identify clinical baseline characteristics associated with patients who withdraw from a CR programme.
Methods
We retrospectively analysed patients who participated in the centre-based CR programmes of a research study in Queensland, Australia. The CR programmes provided structured sessions (training and education) once or twice a week for six weeks in community care centres. We compared the patients who withdrew from their CR programme (Group-W) with those who did not withdraw (or simply completion) (Group-C). Withdrawal was defined as discontinuing within the first four weeks of the CR programme. In the comparison, the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Fisher's exact test were used for analysing age and sex respectively. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with an adjustment for age and sex was used for the body mass index (BMI), six-minute walk test (6WMT), and health-related quality of life (HeartQoL, ESC 2012), comprising physical (HeartQoL-Phy), emotional (HeartQoL-Emo), and global (HeartQoL-Glo) subscales. The study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee (Reference: HREC/16/QPAH/636).
Results
From Dec 2016 to Dec 2017, 600 outpatients with CVD were consented, and enrolled in the study. Seventy participants withdrew. Between the two groups (Group-W vs Group-C), no significant differences were found in age (64±12 years vs 65±10 years; p=0.4221), sex (Female, 31% vs 25%; p=0.2461) and BMI (30.5±6.2 vs 30.1±11.2; p=0.8211). The 6MWT distance was significantly lower in Group-W than Group-C (346±103 m vs 394±92 m; p=0.001). Significantly lower scores of HeartQoL-Phy (1.66±0.86 vs 1.93±0.74; p=0.0072) and HeartQoL-Glo scores (1.80±0.78 vs 2.02±0.67; p=0.0205) were found in Group-W. HeartQoL-Emo scores were lower in Group-W but the difference was not significant (2.19±0.73 vs 2.28±0.72; p=0.4550).
Conclusions
The levels of functional capacity measured by 6MWT and physical activity related quality of life were found to be significantly lower in withdrawal patients than those who completed their CR programme. The finding indicates that new care strategies, especially for patients with limited functional capacity and physical activity, are needed to improve the adherence and effectiveness of CR intervention in future studies.

Abstract
Recent evidence has demonstrated a sex-specific role of the gut microbiome on social behavior such as anxiety, possibly driven by a reciprocal relationship between the gut microbiome and gonadal hormones. For instance, gonadal hormones drive sex differences in gut microbiota composition, and certain gut bacteria can produce androgens from glucocorticoids. We thus asked whether the gut microbiome can influence androgen-dependent socio-sexual behaviors. We first treated C57BL/6 mice with broad-spectrum antibiotics (ABX) in drinking water to deplete the gut microbiota either transiently during early development (embryonic day 16-postnatal day [PND] 21) or in adulthood (PND 60-85). We hypothesized that if ABX interferes with androgens, then early ABX would interfere with critical periods for sexual differentiation of brain and thus lead to long-term decreases in males' socio-sexual behavior, while adult ABX would interfere with androgens' activational effects on behavior. We found that in males but not females, early and adult ABX treatment decreased territorial aggression, and adult ABX also decreased sexual odor preference. We then assessed whether testosterone and/or cecal microbiota transplantation (CMT) via oral gavage could prevent ABX-induced socio-sexual behavioral deficits in adult ABX-treated males. Mice were treated with same- or other-sex control cecum contents or with testosterone for two weeks. While testosterone was not effective in rescuing any behavior, we found that male CMT restored both olfactory preference and aggression in adult ABX male mice, while female CMT restored olfactory preference but not aggression. These results suggest sex-specific effects of the gut microbiome on socio-sexual behaviors, independent of androgens.
