Abstract
Hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) and methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-PBDEs) are present in the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea. OH-PBDEs are known to be both natural products from marine environments and metabolites of the anthropogenic polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), whereas, MeO-PBDEs appear to be solely natural in origin. Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) are by-products formed in connection with the combustion of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), but are also indicated as natural products in a red alga (Ceramium tenuicorne) and blue mussels living in the Baltic Sea. The aims of the present investigation were to quantify the OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs present in C. tenuicorne; to verify the identities of PBDDs detected previously in this species of red alga and to investigate whether cyanobacteria living in this same region of the Baltic Sea contain OH-PBDEs, MeO-PBDEs and/or PBDDs. The red alga was confirmed to contain tribromodibenzo-p-dioxins (triBDDs), by accurate mass determination and additional PBDD congeners were also detected in this sample. This is the first time that PBDDs have been identified in a red alga. The SigmaOH-PBDEs and SigmaMeO-PBDEs concentrations, present in C. tenuicorne were 150 and 4.6 ng g(-1) dry weight, respectively. In the cyanobacteria 6 OH-PBDEs, 6 MeO-PBDEs and 4 PBDDs were detected by mass spectrometry (electron capture negative ionization (ECNI)). The PBDDs and OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs detected in the red alga and cyanobacteria are most likely of natural origin.

Abstract
Biomagnification of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) in food webs from the Baltic Sea and the northern Atlantic Sea was investigated. For this, we used PCB and PBDE concentration data, together with data on fish body weight and delta15N of fish and zooplankton as a measure of trophic position. In the Baltic Sea material, consisting of zooplankton, sprat, herring and salmon, we report biomagnification of all PCB congeners but PCB #209 and of PBDEs with 3-6 or 7 bromine atoms. Higher brominated PBDEs and PCB 209 did not biomagnify likely due to their high molecular weights or sizes and subsequent inefficient dietary uptake in fish. If salmon was excluded from the statistical analysis, strong biomagnification of PCB #209 was evident, indicating species differences in biomagnification. In the Baltic Sea material delta15N and body weight covaried. In the Atlantic Sea material, consisting of fish samples (herring and salmon) of larger body sizes, we show positive correlation between concentrations of most PCBs and PBDEs and body weight without increasing delta15N. This shows that biomagnification in some cases depends on body size and not trophic position. We conclude that there probably is trophic position dependence in biomagnification, which was manifested in a food chain from zooplankton to piscivores, but no further trophic position influence on biomagnification in fish at the highest trophic levels. In these fish, there was a body size effect leading to biomagnification, probably due to slower clearance in larger fish. PCB concentrations were generally between 2 and 6 times higher in Baltic Sea salmon than in Atlantic Sea salmon. Higher PBDE concentrations in the Baltic compared to the Atlantic Sea salmon were also found, but with a larger variation between congeners. Nona- to deca-BDEs were found in most investigated samples, which illustrates the bioavailability of these compounds. Unidentified penta-, hexa-, hepta-, and octa- BDEs were found in several samples.

Abstract
Methodology for the determination of biologically active polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), non-ortho PCBs, polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was used to investigate concentrations and patterns of certain chlorinated PAH (Cl-PAH) in source related samples using synthetic reference mixtures. Thus, in addition to the above mentioned compounds, mono-heptachlorosubstituted fluorenes, phenanthrenes/anthracenes and pyrenes/fluoranthenes (Cl-PAHs) were measured in vapour and particulate air samples from urban road tunnels, samples of settling particulate matter (SPM), and in bottom sediment samples from two point source locations (pulp and paper, and Mg-plant/Fe-Mn-smelter/chlor-alkali) and in the Baltic Sea. Concentrations in air samples followed: PAHs>PCBs>PCNs>non-ortho PCBs or Cl-PAHs>PCDD/Fs. SPM samples collected at increasing distance to the urban area of Stockholm showed: PAHs>PCBs>PCNs>PCDD/Fs>non-ortho PCBs or Cl-PAHs. For all compound groups there was a tenfold (Cl-PAHs fivefold) concentration decrease in SPM samples from highest levels in the urban water area to lowest levels at a distance of 26 km from city centre. PCB profiles of SPM showed similarities with combined profiles of Aroclor 1242 and 1254. PCN profiles of SPM showed similarities with combined profiles of Halowax 1099 and 1014. A correlation with concentration of all tested Cl-PAH and their corresponding parent PAH was found only for Cl-fluorene.

Abstract
Pike, perch and roach from rural waters of the Baltic Sea were investigated for possible biomagnification of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). For this we used data on delta15N, weight and sex of the fish. We were able to separate body size effects from trophic position effects on biomagnification. Both these parameters lead to biomagnification of PCBs and PBDEs. All investigated PCBs (tri- to deca-CBs) biomagnify and the biomagnification potential is positively correlated with hydrophobicity up to log Kow 8.18. Tri- to hepta-BDEs also biomagnify but showed a maximum biomagnification for the penta-BDEs (log Kow 6.46-6.97). The biomagnification of hexa- to hepta-PBDEs was negatively correlated with degree of bromination, likely due to large molecular size or high molecular weight (644-959 Da). Octa-, nona- and deca-BDEs did not biomagnify but were found in two (octa-BDE) and three (nona- and deca-BDEs) of the species, respectively. Increased size of pike is correlated with increased lipid weight based PCB and PBDE concentrations in males but not in females and mean PCB and PBDE concentrations in males are generally higher than in females. For the least hydrophobic PCBs, no sex difference is observed, probably as a consequence of faster clearance of these substances over the gills, making the spawning clearance of PCBs and PBDEs of lesser relative importance.

Abstract
Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) are known to be formed as byproducts in connection with the manufacture and combustion of products containing brominated flame retardants. However, to date little is known about the occurrence of PBDDs in biological samples. The aim of the present investigation was to examine the presence of PBDDs in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) from the Baltic Sea employing a procedure adapted for dioxin analysis. Two triBDDs (1,3,7-triBDD and 1,3,8-triBDD) were identified in biota here for the first time. This identification was based on accurate mass determination and comparison of retention times on three gas chromatographic columns of different polarities (PTE 5, SP-2331, and OV1701/heptakis) with synthesized standards, together with comparisons of electron capture negative ionization (ECNI) and electron ionization (EI) mass spectra. In addition, five PBDDs and one polybrominated dibenzofuran (PBDF) were tentatively identified; altogether, one diBDD, three triBDDs, three tetraBDDs, and one triBDFwere detected in the blue mussels. To our knowledge this is the first time PBDDs have been identified in biota of the Baltic Sea. The sigma triBDD concentration in the blue mussels was estimated to be 170 ng/g lipids. The origin of these PBDDs remains unclear, but a plausible hypothesis could be biogenic formation in the marine environment.

Abstract
A liquid-liquid partitioning method was optimized for the rapid and quantitative separation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from aliphatic hydrocarbons in complex primary extracts. This technique was based on the selective extraction of PAHs and PCBs from an aliphatic solvent into dimethylformamide (DMF). Partition experiments demonstrated that the optimal performance was achieved with a DMF (5% H2O)-n-pentane binary system. The optimized application of two consecutive DMF (5% H2O)-n-pentane treatments to extracts from two different polluted sediments facilitated the elimination of alkanes and unresolved complex mixture by more than 94% while the average recoveries of spiked deuterated-PAHs and 13C labeled PCBs ranged from 84 to 94 and 75 to 96%, respectively.

Abstract
The major aim of this study was to characterize toxic organic compounds in bottom sediments from a PCB polluted bay. To overcome difficulties in pinpointing toxicants in complex environmental samples we applied a bio-effect directed (BED) fractionation approach and investigated the relationships between aromaticity, teratogenicity, and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) mediated toxicity. Hepatic ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activities and malformations were investigated in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae exposed by injecting sediment extract and fractions (separated by their degree of aromaticity) thereof into newly fertilized eggs. Our results imply that non-additive effects get more pronounced the more complex the exposure. The fraction mainly composed of dicyclic aromatic compounds (DACs), including PCBs, was surprisingly less teratogenic than the fraction mainly composed of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). A major part of the latter potential was isolated in a subfraction mainly composed of three- and four-ring compounds (including alkylated and sulphur-heterocyclic compounds). Though no clear relationship between aromaticity and EROD induction was observed, both the DAC- and the PAC-fractions contributed equally to the EROD induction potential. A major part of the PAC-fraction's induction potential came from a subfraction containing compounds with more than five rings. No clear relationship between teratogenicity and EROD induction was observed, underlining the need for a battery of biomarkers in estimating environmental risk. Two specific malformations not previously described in literature-asymmetric yolk sac and fin edema-could be tracked through the fractionation steps, suggesting that this BED-fractionation strategy is a reliable tool for pinpointing toxic compounds in the environment.

Abstract
Endocrine processes were studied in reference female perch (Perca fluviatilis) from Lake Djursjön and in leachate-exposed females from Lake Molnbyggen during one reproductive cycle. A high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS) technique enabled the analysis of circulating sex steroids [progesterone (P), 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17alpha-OHP), androstenedione (A), testosterone (T), estrone (E1), and 17beta-estradiol (E2)], the maturation-inducing hormone (MIH) 17alpha,20beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17alpha,20beta-P), and glucocorticoids [11-deoxycortisol (11-DC) and cortisol]. Body and organ measurements, ratio of sexually mature (SM) females, and frequencies of body lesions, were also recorded. High frequencies of body lesions and a low ratio of SM females were generally found in Molnbyggen. These females also had lower gonadosomatic index (GSI) and liver-somatic index (LSI) in the early stages of vitellogenesis, indicating either a delayed onset of oogenesis or an impaired vitellogenesis. Non-reproducing females from both lakes showed a similar LSI cycle as SM females. Increasing T and A levels in SM females from Djursjön coincided with the GSI peak at the time of spawning. These two androgens were on several occasions lower in SM females from Molnbyggen, possibly the result of a disrupted 17,20-lyase activity of the P450 17alpha enzyme because only minor effects were observed on circulating P and 17alpha-OHP levels. E2 and E1 levels increased during vitellogenesis in females from both lakes, with E1 levels more closely resembling the peaks of A and GSI. Peak levels of 17alpha,20beta-P at the time of spawning confirmed its function as the MIH in perch, while the simultaneous peak of 11-DC suggests that it also may be involved in final maturation of the oocytes.

Abstract
Chlorinated toxic planar aromatic compounds were analyzed in the heavily industrialized Grenlandsfjords, which is a system of silled fjords in southern Norway. Surface water samples contained 7.4-160 ng/m3 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), 14-410 ng/m3 polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and 0.31-2.4 ng/m3 non-orthochlorinated biphenyls (non-orthoPCBs). The concentrations of PCDD/Fs were about 300 times higher than in the Baltic Sea. Highest level of the compounds wasfound near a magnesium production plant Hepta-CDFs and penta-CNs dominated in the inner-fjord waters, and tetra-CB 77 was the major non-orthoPCB congener. Sediment samples had PCDD/F concentration of 25-730 ng/g dw. Highest concentration was detected close to the magnesium plant. Octa-CDFdominated in the fjord sediments, especially near the magnesium plant indicating a discharge-specific contamination with this congener. The isomer composition of PCDD/Fs and of PCNs, was unchanged when comparing samples from different layers of a sediment core from the deep anoxic water. This concludes that essentially zero degradation had occurred during approximately 50 years in this environment.

Abstract
Lake Molnbyggen was previously found to harbour a large number of sexually immature female perch (Perca fluviatilis) suffering from endocrine disruption. In an attempt to pin-point the source of the endocrine-disrupting substance(s) (EDSs), brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) from Vadbäcken, a stream contaminated by leachate from a public refuse dump and which empties into Lake Molnbyggen, were investigated. In addition, female perch from Lakes Yxen and Kvarntjärn, located up-stream and down-stream of Lake Molnbyggen, were investigated. Only 16.7% of the adult female brook trout in Vadbäcken were sexually mature, associated with decreased gonadosomatic index, lower brain aromatase activity, and lower circulating levels of testosterone and 17beta-oestradiol, in comparison to female brook trout from the reference stream Björntjärnsbäcken. Male brook trout showed decreased gonadosomatic index, in addition to bile duct hyperplasia in the liver, which was also found in female brook trout livers from Vadbäcken. In Lake Molnbyggen, 57.6% of the female perch were found to be sexually immature with high frequencies of skin lesions, such as sores and fin erosion, significantly decreased gonadosomatic index, lower aromatase activity, and lower levels of testosterone and 17beta-oestradiol. No signs of reproductive disorders or endocrine disruption were seen in female perch from Lakes Yxen and Kvarntjärn compared to female perch from the reference lake, Lake Djursjön. Since brook trout of both sexes from Vadbäcken displayed the same kind of serious adverse impairment of gonad development and endocrine disruption as perch from Lake Molnbyggen, very strong evidence are provided that the refuse dump is the source for the responsible EDS(s), since both Vadbäcken and Lake Molnbyggen are known to be contaminated by leachate from that dump. The low levels of PAHs and PCBs in the surface sediments of Lake Molnbyggen suggest that these pollutants are not the responsible EDS(s).

Abstract
Reproductive failure and endocrine disruption in female perch (Perca fluviatilis) and female brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), naturally exposed to toxic leachate from a municipal refuse dump, has raised concerns about the reproductive status in female fish outside the sewage treatment plant (STP), which now treats the same leachate. Female perch from the receiving water, Lake Siljan, were therefore sampled in a gradient from the STP in Fornby and Osterviken and compared with reference females from Isunda or Solleron. A high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS) technique enabled the analysis of circulating steroids in blood plasma: the sex steroids progesterone (P), 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone (17alpha-OHP), androstenedione (A), testosterone (T), estrone (E1), and 17beta-oestradiol (E2), the maturation-inducing hormone (MIH) 17alpha,20beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17alpha,20beta-P), and the glucocorticoids 11-deoxycortisol (11-DC) and cortisol (C). Body and organ measurements, ratio of sexually mature (SM) females, and frequencies of body lesions, were also recorded. The percentages of SM females found in Fornby on Oct 23 (83.8%) and in Osterviken on May 14 (54.0%) were lower compared with Isunda (100%). The lack of differences in gonadosomatic index (GSI) and liver-somatic index (LSI) indicated a normal vitellogenesis in SM females from Fornby and Osterviken. No differences in circulating levels of steroids were observed between the sites, except at the time of spawning, when elevated P and 17alpha-OHP levels in females from Osterviken indicated a steroidogenic shift from the synthesis of sex steroids towards the production of the MIH 17alpha,20beta-P. The significant peak-levels of both 17alpha,20beta-P and 11-DC in female perch from Osterviken at the same time suggest that both are involved in controlling final oocyte maturation in perch. The elevated levels of androgens (A and T) in females caught on the same occasion in Fornby implied that these females were at an earlier stage of oocyte maturation, prior to the steroidogenic shift towards MIH-production. This study confirms the results of an earlier study revealing low numbers of SM female perch outside the STP in Fornby. The lack of associated effects on organ indexes and circulating levels of steroids does not indicate exposure to endocrine disrupting substances (EDSs) from the treated sewage. The consistently high numbers of SM females in the northern part of Siljan suggest, however, that natural factors are not responsible for the reproductive failures in the southern part of the lake.

Abstract
Approximately 80,000 kg polysulfide sealant containing 10,000-18,000 kg polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) was deposited at a Swedish municipal landfill station during 1965-1973. Investigations during 1994 showed that soil layers underneath the landfill had concentration of PCB not alarmingly high. The concentration of PCB congeners in ground water samples was elevated 4-750 times compared to a reference sample. Based on samples of ground water, leachate water, and flux chambers measuring evaporation of PCB from the landfill surface, the emission of PCB was estimated to be 1 g sigmaPCB/yr. This very low rate was attributed to the high sorptive capacity of the sealant. Compared to a reference site, the evaporation flux was elevated for the most volatile congeners, but factors 20-1400 lower than from another landfill which was contaminated with PCB in paper-pulp fibres.

Abstract
By measuring a battery of basic physiological biomarkers and the concentration of SigmaDDT in adult female perch (Perca fluviatilis), an assumed aquatic pollution gradient was confirmed, with the city of Stockholm (Sweden) as a point source of anthropogenic substances. The investigation included an upstream gradient, westwards through Lake Mälaren (46 km), and a downstream gradient, eastwards through the Stockholm archipelago (84 km). The results indicated a severe pollution situation in central Stockholm, with poor health status of the perch: retarded growth, increased frequency of sexually immature females, low gonadosomatic index, and disturbed visceral fat metabolism. SigmaDDT, measured as a pollution indicator, was 10-28 times higher than the background in perch from the Baltic Proper. Besides the main gradient other sources of pollution also influenced the response pattern of the measured biomarkers. In particular, there were strong indications of pollution coming from the Baltic Sea.

Abstract
In Molnbyggen, a leachate-contaminated lake in Sweden, effects on the reproductive system of perch included a decreased frequency of sexually mature female perch, reduced gonadosomatic index and decreased plasma levels of androstenedione and testosterone, but the contaminants responsible for these effects have not yet been identified. A biomarker-directed fractionation approach could be used to narrow the search for the compound(s) responsible for the adverse effects in Molnbyggen female perch. Thus, it is important to develop and test a suitable biomarker, which can be used in this type of approach. We evaluated if decreased concentrations of sex steroids could work as an in vivo end-point in female zebrafish fed an organic extract of bottom sediments from Molnbyggen. The responsiveness of zebrafish to endocrine alteration was evaluated using a positive control substance, cyproterone acetate (CA), which is known to inhibit steroid biosynthesis. After the 21-day exposure period the concentrations of testosterone (T) and estradiol (E2) were successfully determined by HRGC/HRMS in whole-body homogenates of individual fish. Median T concentrations were 1.7pmol/g fish in controls and were decreased after exposure both to CA (0.55pmol/g fish) and Molnbyggen sediment extract (1.2-1.3pmol/g fish). Median E2 concentrations were 5.3pmol/g fish in controls and were decreased after CA exposure (2.3pmol/g fish) and after exposure to Molnbyggen sediment extract (4.0-4.5pmol/g fish). This suggests that sex steroid concentrations in zebrafish are responsive to endocrine alteration and indicates that compounds with endocrine altering potency are present in Molnbyggen sediments.

Abstract
This study reports on the bioavailability, maternal transfer, and genotoxicity in feral fish of organic sediment pollutants. Northern pike (Esox lucius) and perch (Perca fluviatilis) were caught in a polluted bay before and during dredging activities and from reference areas. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in ovulating eggs to investigate if the bay sediment posed a threat to early life-stages of fish. On the basis of previous investigations in this area, the level of exposure via maternal transfer and diffusive uptake of water-borne pollutants after hatch is likely sufficient to cause abnormalities in early life-stages of fish. During dredging, hepatic DNA adducts were elevated in adult fish, demonstrating an increased release of genotoxic compounds, which may contribute to adverse effects in aquatic organisms for several years. Although no substantial increase of maternally transferred pollutants were observed during dredging, this is the first time a correlation between hepatic DNA adducts in fish and pollutant burden in their eggs is demonstrated. Our findings underline the importance of combining chemical and toxicological methods as well as a need for greater emphasis on other polycyclic aromatic compounds in environmental risk evaluations.

Abstract
Environmental fate determining physical properties including their temperature dependence for five nitro musks and for seven polycyclic musks were estimated. The properties evaluated were vapor pressure in a solid and liquid state (PS and PL), solubility in water (S), Henry's law coefficient (H = PL/S) and log octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW). Gas chromatography for starting values of vapor pressure estimation and HPLC experiments at 5-20 degrees C for comparison of the theoretical versus experimental solubilities in water were performed. The values of temperature (T) dependence coefficients (Ai and Bi) in equations: log (Property)i = Ai - Bi/T were determined. Values of properties were compared with literature-based data, and an example of their use in environmental hazard estimation by fate modeling was given.

Abstract
This study compares in situ observed porewater concentration of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with predictions by common solid-water phase distribution models. Bottom sediments were sampled in The Grenlandsfjords, Norway, and the interstitial porewater was isolated from the solids by centrifugation and filtration. Both phases were analysed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/F), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and organic carbon. Based on the sediments' solid phase content of POPs, organic carbon, and soot carbon, we used the organic matter partitioning (OMP), and also the soot and organic matter partitioning (SOMP) model to estimate the porewater concentration. The OMP model gave better agreement to observations than the SOMP model for both PCDD/Fs and PAHs. The observed concentration of the PCDD/Fs in the sediments' porewater was much higher than in the deep water of the fjord. The logarithm of the organic matter-water partitioning coefficent (log K(OC)) in the porewater had positive linear regression on the logarithm of the octanol-water partitioning coefficient (log K(OW)). The slope of the regression model was indistinguishable from 1, except for the PAHs as a group which had a slope less than 1. This contrasts to previous studies undertaken in The Grenlandsfjords water column, where the slopes were higher than 1 for PCDD/Fs, and the K(OC) were much higher than the K(OW). One explanation may be that the influence of POPs adsorption to soots decrease because competitive sorption by other compounds in the sediment are higher than in the water column. This indicates that the sorption isotherms for these POPs need better understanding in order to be applicable in both the water column and the porewater.

Abstract
Studies have shown that adult female perch in a freshwater lake, Molnbyggen, Sweden, have a reproductive disorder caused by unidentified endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) leaching from a local refuse dump. The adverse effects include shallow open sores, low ratio of sexually mature individuals, low gonadosomatic index and low circulating levels of androgens. We hypothesised that the low androgen levels could be a result of impaired production and/or stimulated excretion of androgens by EDCs. From October 2000 to November 2001, at time-points important in the perch reproductive cycle, adult female perch were collected in Molnbyggen and in the reference lake, Djursjön. The activities of three key enzymes in androgen biosynthesis: 17alpha-hydroxylase (17OHlase), 17,20-lyase (lyase) and 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17betaHSD) were determined in head kidney or ovary. The relationship between enzyme activities and plasma steroid concentrations was examined. Ovarian histopathology and the determination of brain aromatase activity were also included in the study. Similar 17OHlase, 17betaHSD and aromatase activities were found in Molnbyggen females and reference fish throughout the year. Head kidney 17OHlase showed a positive correlation to cortisol levels (r=0.754; p<0.001) but not to androgen levels. Molnbyggen females exhibited lower ovarian lyase activity during vitellogenesis than reference fish. Atretic oocytes were on most occasions more frequent in sexually immature than in sexually mature females. The results suggest that neither 17OHlase, 17betaHSD nor aromatase is the target for EDCs disrupting the androgen homeostasis of exposed female perch. Further investigation is needed to establish the role of decreased ovarian lyase activity in endocrine homeostasis, but the possibility of increased excretion of androgens should also be examined.

Abstract
A bleached sulfate integrated pulp and paper mill producing printing and writing paper from mixed tropical hardwood and bamboo was studied. The mill uses a "conventional bleaching sequence," C-E-H1-H2, with an average molecular chlorine consumption of 50 kg per ton of air-dried pulp (ADP). The content of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) in the bleaching filtrate in terms of the nordic toxicity equivalent (N-TEQ) was 33.5, 1.15, 0.56, and 0.014 pg/L for the E, C, H1, and H2 bleaching stages, respectively. The corresponding PCDFs and PCDDs loads in ng/t ADP were in the same ranking, i.e., 670, 69, 11.2, and 0.28, respectively. The congener and isomeric pattern of PCDFs and PCDDs of the bleaching filtrate and the bleached pulp was found to be typical for the chlorine bleaching plant effluent. The obtained dioxin load formed in the mill is in agreement with Western studies for the given multiple chlorine of 0.21-0.23. The load is, however, lower than reported discharges from Scandinavian mills using 1980s bleaching technologies, but substantially higher than the discharges from mills with modern bleaching technologies. Abstract
Concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), and dioxin-like non-ortho-PCBs were measured in white-tailed sea eagle (WTSE) eagle eggs collected along the Swedish coast of the Baltic Sea during the period 1992-2004. The eggs represent two different subpopulations with significantly different nestling brood sizes; the Baltic Proper (BP) with an approximately normal nestling brood size (1.62), and the south Bothnian Sea (sBS) with reduced nestling brood size (1.22) combined with a significantly higher rate of dead eggs. The aim was to investigate if this difference in reproductive outcome was linked to differences in exposure to dioxin-like compounds. Three eggs collected in Greenland in 2000 were included in the study to provide a reference sea eagle population outside of the Baltic Sea region. The concentrations of ∑PCDD, ∑PCDF and ∑non-ortho-PCB in the two subpopulations from the Baltic Sea (BS) region ranged from 0.41-4.1, 1.2-5.3 and 180-970 ng/g lipids, respectively, while in the Greenland population the ranges were 0.11-0.16, 0.22-0.33 and 57-83 ng/g lipid, respectively. 2,3,4,7,8-PCDF was the predominant congener in all areas and accounted for on average 31-49% of the total ∑PCDD/F concentrations. The total toxic equivalents (TEQ) in sBS WTSEs were higher (approximately 39 ng TEQ/g lipid) than reported in eggs for many other birds, and the major contributors to the TEQ in the Baltic Sea were the non-ortho-PCBs. A principal component analysis (PCA) showed a difference in congener pattern between the two Baltic regions that was statistically significant (Hotelling's T(2) test). We found no significant differences in the total TEQ between the two populations (sBS-BP) and thus no evidence was found linking the reproductive impairment in WTSE in sBS to the concentrations of PCDD/Fs or non-ortho-PCBs in the eggs.

Abstract
Eggs laid by white-tailed sea eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla), one in 1941 and five eggs between 1996 and 2001, all from the same geographical region of the Baltic Sea, were screened for organohalogen substances. The 1941 egg contained hexachlorobenzene (HCB), but did not contain either of the pesticides hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) or p,p'-DDT, nor any metabolites of the latter. In contrast, the more recent eggs (REs) contained all of these compounds. Of the seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) analyzed (CB28, -52, -101, -118, -138/-163, -153 and 180), only the more highly chlorinated congeners were detected in the 1941 sample, with CB153 followed by CB180 showing the highest concentrations. All eggs demonstrated the same congener pattern with respect to the more highly chlorinated PCBs, but concentrations were approximately 70-230 times higher in the REs. All of the polychlorinated-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/Fs) congeners analyzed were detected in the eggs, with the dominant congener being 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF (1250pg/gl.w. in 1941 and 1540pg/gl.w. (GM) for the REs, respectively). None of the other congeners exceeded 400pg/gl.w., and the concentrations of 2,3,7,8-TCDD, 2,3,7,8-TCDF and 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDF were all lower in the REs. None of five congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) found in the REs was detected in the egg from 1941. The three methoxylated brominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-BDEs) analyzed were found at similar levels and with a similar congener pattern in REs as in the egg from 1941. In conclusion, this study has shown the absence of DDE and PBDE and the presence of HCB and PCBs in a white-tailed sea eagle egg laid in 1941, and a strong increase of PCBs, DDE and PBDE in white-tailed sea eagle eggs from the same area in 1996-2001. The MeO-BDEs were found in similar concentrations in the analyzed eggs. The 1941 sample shows substantial concentrations of PCDD/Fs, noteworthy in the same magnitude as in the recent samples, illustrating the historical and recent exposure of these compounds.

By measuring a battery of cytological and biochemical biomarkers in adult female perch (Perca fluviatilis), the city of Stockholm (Sweden) was investigated as a point source of anthropogenic aquatic pollution. The investigation included both an upstream gradient, 46 km westwards through Lake Mälaren, and a downstream gradient, 84 km eastwards through the Stockholm archipelago. Indeed, there was a graded response for most of the biomarkers and for the muscle concentrations of ΣPBDE, four organotin compounds and PFOS in the perch. The results indicated severe pollution in central Stockholm, with poor health of the perch, characterised by increased frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes, altered liver apoptosis, increased liver catalase activity, decreased brain aromatase activity, and decreased liver lysosomal membrane stability. Some biomarker responses were lowest in the middle archipelago and increased again eastwards, indicating a second, partly overlapping, gradient of toxic effects from the Baltic Sea.

Abstract
In previous studies there was evidence of endocrine disruption in fish in waterways contaminated with leachate from a Swedish landfill. Symptoms included fewer sexually mature (SM) female perch (Perca fluviatilis), distinct sores, reduced gonadosomatic index, and decreased plasma androgen levels. Based on previous findings it was hypothesized that the decrease in plasma androgen concentrations could have been caused by increased steroid excretion. Therefore, testosterone UDP-glucuronosyl transferase (UDPGT) activity and biliary steroids were measured in SM and sexually immature (SIM) female perch during one reproductive cycle. UDPGT activity in exposed fish did not differ from reference fish and was similar in both SM and SIM female perch. Since androgen levels in SIM fish usually are much lower than in SM fish, this indicates expression of testosterone UDPGT irrespective of substrate availability. There was no general increase in biliary steroids in exposed female perch. Biliary steroid levels correlated with corresponding plasma steroid levels. In conclusion, the reduced androgen levels in exposed female perch are most likely not caused by increased steroid excretion.
