Abstract
A female-biased sex ratio is considered advantageous for the cytoplasmic elements that inhabit sexually reproducing organisms. There are numerous examples of bacterial symbionts in the arthropod cytoplasm that bias the host sex ratio toward females through various means, including feminization and male killing. Recently, maternally inherited RNA viruses belonging to the family Partitiviridae were found to cause male killing in moths and flies, but it was unknown whether male-killing viruses were restricted to Partitiviridae or could be found in other taxa. Here, we provide compelling evidence that a maternally inherited RNA virus, Spodoptera litura male-killing virus (SlMKV), selectively kills male embryos of the tobacco caterpillar Spodoptera litura, resulting in all-female broods. SlMKV injected into uninfected S. litura can also be inherited maternally and causes male killing. SlMKV has five genomic segments encoding seven open reading frames, has no homolog of known male-killing genes, and belongs to an unclassified group of arthropod-specific viruses closely related to Tolivirales. When transinfected into larvae, both male and female recipients allow SlMKV to proliferate, but only males die at the pupal stage. The viral RNA levels in embryonic and pupal male killing suggest that the mechanism of male killing involves the constitutive expression of viral products that are specifically lethal to males, rather than the male-specific expression of viral products. Our results, together with recent findings on male-killing partiti-like viruses, suggest that diverse viruses in arthropods tend to acquire male killing independently and that such viruses may be important components of intragenomic conflict in arthropods.

Diapause in Univoltine and Semivoltine Life Cycles. ANNUAL REVIEW OF ENTOMOLOGY 2023; 68:257-276. Abstract
Although it is generally more adaptive for insects to produce additional generations than to have longer life cycles, some insects produce one or fewer generations per year (univoltine or semivoltine life cycles, respectively). Some insects with the potential to produce multiple generations per year produce a univoltine life cycle in response to environmental conditions. Obligatory univoltine insects have a single long diapause or multiple diapauses in different seasons. Semivoltine insects have multiple diapauses in different years, a prolonged diapause for more than a year, or diapause controlled by a circannual rhythm. Diapause in these insects greatly varies among species both in the physiological mechanism and in the evolutionary background, and there is no general rule defining it. In this review, we survey the physiological control of univoltine and semivoltine insects' diapause and discuss the adaptive significance of the long life cycles. Although constraints such as slow development are sometimes responsible for these life cycles, the benefits of these life cycles can be explained by bet-hedging in many cases. We also discuss the effect of climate warming on these life cycles as a future area of research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The surgical treatment for non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD) has an important adjunctive role and reported outcomes have been generally good; however, the prognostic factors remain unclear.METHODS: Sixty-one patients with NTM-PD who underwent surgical resection for a therapeutic purpose from January 2000 to March 2017 at five affiliated institutions were enrolled. We explored the factors that influence complications and prognosis by retrospectively referring to the medical records.RESULTS: The mean age of the present cohort was 61.8 ± 11.4 years. The pathogen was Mycobacterium avium complex in 49 patients, M. abscessus in 5. The most common indications were refractory to medication in 39. The surgical techniques employed were lobectomy or further resection in 49, sublobar resection in 8, with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in 21. Sputum culture conversion rate was 95.1%. Univariate analysis of factors associated with deterioration revealed significant differences related to age (P = 0.025), pre-operative albumin level (P = 0.001) and development of postoperative complications (P = 0.037), while pre-operative albumin level alone was a significant factor in multivariate analysis (P = 0.009).CONCLUSION: Outcomes after resection were generally good in the present cases. Nutritional status, as indicated by albumin level, may affect prognosis after surgical treatment.

Geographic Variation in Photoperiodic Response for Induction of Pseudopupal Diapause in Epicauta gorhami (Coleoptera: Meloidae). ENVIRONMENTAL ENTOMOLOGY 2021; 50:1145-1150. Abstract
Geographical variations in the threshold of environmental cues for diapause induction are important in understanding the life history strategy of insects. Larvae of the bean blister beetle, Epicauta gorhami (Coleoptera: Meloidae), feed on grasshopper eggs and undergo hypermetamorphosis. They normally enter diapause as a pseudopupa (fifth instar). However, when the larvae are reared under long-day and high-temperature conditions, they do not enter pseudopupal diapause but pupate directly from the fourth instar. In addition, this insect is known to modify its photoperiodic response for induction of pseudopupal diapause depending on food availability for larvae. In this study, the larval photoperiodic responses for diapause induction were examined for three populations of E. gorhami collected from the northernmost (Morioka, 39.7°N), central (Kazo, 36.1°N), and southernmost (Takanabe, 32.1°N) parts of its distribution range, and the responses were examined under both fully fed and food-deprived (FD) conditions. Diapause incidence decreased in FD larvae for all populations in long-day conditions, and the critical day-lengths for the diapause incidence were calculated as 14.81, 13.97, and 13.99 h in the Morioka, Kazo, and Takanabe populations, respectively. The results indicate the presence of a geographical variation in larval photoperiodic response, in which diapause is induced earlier in higher latitudinal areas. From these results, together with data for developmental threshold temperature and thermal constant, the Morioka and Kazo populations were suggested to have a partial bivoltine life cycle under the conditions of extremely early oviposition season, a sufficient summer temperature, and poor larval food availability.

Microhabitat Variation in Egg Diapause Incidence in Summer Within a Local Population: An Adaptation to Decline in Host-Plant Suitability in Trigonotylus caelestialium (Hemiptera: Miridae). Abstract
Diapause induction in multivoltine insects is an ecophysiological event that is generally triggered by seasonal cues such as photoperiod and temperature. The rice leaf bug, Trigonotylus caelestialium (Kirkaldy), feeds on various Poaceae grasses and produces several generations a year. Previous studies have shown that adults produce diapause and nondiapause eggs under short-day and long-day conditions, respectively. However, there is a distinct mid-summer peak in diapause incidence before an autumnal increase in diapause incidence in the field, which cannot be explained by the laboratory results. The present study was performed to examine the environmental factors affecting the diapause incidence in mid-summer and the adaptive significance of this phenomenon. Seasonal trends in diapause incidence differed significantly among three sites located 150-400 m apart from each other and with different host plants. The suitability of host plants differs depending on species and seasonally. Therefore, the microhabitat difference in diapause trend is believed to be due to the difference in host plants. When field-collected female adults laying diapause eggs in late June were fed a seasonally deteriorating host (the orange foxtail, Alopecurus aequalis Sobol. [Poales: Poaceae]), they kept laying diapause eggs, whereas when fed a suitable host (the wheat, Triticum aestivum L. [Poales: Poaceae]) for 5 d, they changed oviposition mode to lay nondiapause eggs. These results indicate that host-plant suitability affects the oviposition mode of T. caelestialium. Diapause-egg oviposition in mid-summer in T. caelestialium has adaptive significance as a bet-hedging strategy against unpredictable dietary conditions.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
The use of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) promotes better clinical outcomes for intervention in complex lesions. However, the data demonstrating whether use of IVUS improves primary patency following stenting for aorto-iliac lesions in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) are limited.
Purpose
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of IVUS use on primary patency 12 months after stent implantation for aorto-iliac lesions.
Methods
We analyzed a clinical database of the OMOTENASHI registry (Observational prospective Multicenter registry study on Outcomes of peripheral arTErial disease patieNts treated by AngioplaSty tHerapy in aortoIliac artery), registering symptomatic PAD patients (Rutherford category 2, 3, or 4) undergoing endovascular therapy for aorto-iliac lesions between January 2014 and April 2016 in Japan. The current study analyzed 803 patients who underwent self-expandable stent implantation at 61 centers with the institutional volume known. The primary endpoint was 12-month restenosis, defined as ≥50% stenosis on computed tomography or angiography, or a peak systolic velocity ratio ≥2.5 on duplex ultrasound. When treatment strategies, endovascular procedures and clinical outcomes were compared between the patients treated with IVUS use and those treated without IVUS use, the propensity score matching was performed to minimize the inter-group difference in baseline characteristics.
Results
A total of 545 patients (67.9%) underwent IVUS-supported stent implantation. Patients treated with IVUS use had a lower prevalence of regular dialysis, whereas they had a higher prevalence of TASC II class D and chronic total occlusion. In patients treated with IVUS use, carbon dioxide contrast agent were more often used, and 0.035-inch guidewire was less frequently selected. Implanted stents in these patients were longer and smaller in diameter. The propensity score matching extracted 138 pairs, with no remarkable intergroup difference in baseline characteristics. Procedure time ≤1 hour was less frequent in patients treated with IVUS use; their radiation time was longer. Endovascular strategies, as well as postoperative medication were not significantly different between patients with and without IVUS use. The 12-month restenosis risk was not significantly different between patients with and without IVUS use (10.2% [6.9 to 14.9%] versus 10.3% [5.4 to 18.6%], P=0.99).
Conclusion
IVUS use in aorto-iliac stenting for patients with PAD was not associated with primary patency at 12 months.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) has widely spread for treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). However, the effects of EVAR on vascular function remain to be clarified. According to several reports, changes in aortic stiffness after EVAR reflect badly on future cardiovascular events. Recently, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) is accepted as the most simple and reproducible method to determine the aortic stiffness.
Purpose
We aimed to evaluate the change of baPWV following EVAR and investigate the relationship between the aortic stiffness and the long-term outcomes following EVAR.
Methods
We enrolled 172 patients who underwent primary EVAR between January 2009 and December 2017 in our University hospital. Patients with saccular aneurysm, iliac aneurysm and pseudo aneurysm were excluded from the analysis. PWV data were collected before and 1 week after EVAR. PWV was measured as the mean baPWV values of both lower limbs. The long-term outcomes were evaluated with the cardiovascular event and AAA changing rate (mm/year) which was calculated by computed tomographic scanning at the preoperative and latest imaging studies. The cardiovascular event was defined as the expansion of thoracic or abdominal aortic aneurysm (>10 mm or >5 mm/year), central nervous system disorder, acute heart failure, new arrhythmia, peripheral arterial disease. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the cut off values of preoperative baPWV (pre-PWV) and postoperative baPWV (post-PWV) for the risk factor of cardiovascular event.
Results
The mean age was 76.6±7.5 years and 149 patients (86.7%) were male. The mean follow-up period was 41.6±27.0 months. The mean AAA changing rate was −1.84±4.72 mm/year. Post-PWV was significantly increased compared to pre-PWV (pre-PWV v.s. post-PWV; 1885±382 cm/s vs. 2060±528 cm/s, p<0.0001). The optimal cut-off values of the pre and post PWV for predicting cardiovascular events were 1900 cm/s and 2100 cm/s, respectively. The Kaplan-Meier curves indicate that 5 year-cardiovascular event free rates were 45.9% in the patients with pre PWV ≥1900 cm/s and 73.2% in the patients with pre PWV <1900 cm/s (p=0.0185). Similarly, 5 year-cardiovascular event free rates were 46.6% in the patients with post-PWV ≥2100cm/s and 73.4% in the patients with post PWV <2100 cm/s (p=0.0162). Furthermore, the linear regression analysis indicated that post-PWV values correlated positively with the AAA changing rate (r=0.1811, p=0.0195) while pre-PWV was not associated with AAA changing rate (r=0.1211, p=0.1201).
Conclusions
Our results show that EVAR increase aortic stiffness in the acute phases and high post-baPWV is associated with poor shrinkage of abdominal aortic aneurysm in EVAR patients. This is the first study to demonstrate the association between high PWV and poor long-term outcome in endovascular aneurysm repair patients.

Life-History Traits of a Subtropical Cerambycid Beetle, Ropica honesta (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). ENVIRONMENTAL ENTOMOLOGY 2019; 48:923-928. Abstract
Ropica honesta Pascoe is a small-sized cerambycid that has been recorded in tropical to subtropical Asia. In this study, life-history traits were examined for a local population collected from Iriomote Island (24.3°N, 123.8°E), Okinawa, Japan, by rearing insects on artificial diet as larval food. The egg period was 5.9 ± 0.3 d at 25°C. There was no significant difference in the duration of the larval, pupal, and adult preoviposition periods between long-day (14:10 [L:D]) and short-day (12:12 [L:D]) photoperiods at both 20 and 25°C. These periods at 25°C (14:10 [L:D]) were 28.5 ± 1.4, 8.4 ± 0.5, and 9.6 ± 1.9 d (mean ± SD), respectively. The relationship between the developmental rate and temperature followed the law of total effective temperature; thus, the developmental threshold temperature and thermal constant were estimated based on these data. Together with the finding that R. honesta may not have diapause in the egg stage, it is suggested that this beetle does not have diapause in the life cycle. Furthermore, when larvae were reared on natural food (dead twigs of hardwoods) adults emerged from the twigs 47.6 ± 2.9 d after oviposition, and this value was close to the total duration of the egg to pupal periods. Together with the data for annual temperature of the habitat and the fact that food resources for the species (dead twigs and leaves of hardwoods) are available throughout the year, we conclude that R. honesta develops and reproduces all year round, with five generations at maximum.

Abstract
The hawk moth Theretra oldenlandiae (Fabricius) is an important insect pest because in the larval stage it feeds on agricultural crops and ornamental plants such as the eddoe and garden balsam. In this study, we established methods for rearing T. oldenlandiae in the laboratory using an artificial diet containing dry powder of a wild grass Cayratia japonica (Thunb.) Gagnep. Several artificial diets were tested with different ratios of a commercial diet, Insecta LFM, and the dry leaf powder, and including different antibiotics, and the composition of the standard diet on which larvae performed best was determined. The standard diet contains 20 g of Insecta LFM, 4 g of leaf powder, 100 ml of water, 75 mg of chloramphenicol, and 200 μl of propionic acid. Larvae reared on the standard diet became larger pupae than those reared on C. japonica leaves. This result suggests that the larvae have growth potential that is masked on C. japonica leaves, and that C. japonica may not be the most suitable host species for T. oldenlandiae larvae in terms of nutrient level.

Abstract
Recent climate warming has affected some life-history traits of insects, including voltinism and body size. The magnitude of changes in these traits may differ latitudinally within a species because of the differing lengths of season available for growth. The present study aims to estimate the change in voltinism of the lawn ground cricket, Polionemobius mikado (Shiraki) (Orthoptera: Trigonidiidae), over the last four decades by comparing the body size between adults collected from a wide range of latitudes in Japan in recent years (2015-2017) and those collected four decades ago (1969-1976). The body size of adults collected in recent years showed a latitudinal saw-tooth cline, in the same way as body size did four decades ago, and the cline shifted northward over the last four decades: In 2015-2017, the body size decreased slightly with increasing latitude from 31°N to 36°N, and then increased to 40°N, and again decreased from 40°N to 44°N. Comparison of the body size between recent years and four decades ago revealed that the body size has decreased significantly at the middle latitudes (36-40°N), suggesting that the proportion of smaller bivoltine individuals there has increased over the last four decades. The sum of effective temperatures for postdiapause embryonic development at around 36°N in recent years was comparable to that at 31-35°N four decades ago, at which P. mikado populations were bivoltine. Taken together, these findings suggested that the latitudinal range suitable for the bivoltine life cycle of P. mikado has expanded northward over the last four decades because of climate warming. This is the first report that shows that a decrease in body size can be caused by climate warming via an increase in voltinism.

Abstract
Larvae of the bean blister beetle, Epicauta gorhami Marseul (Coleoptera: Meloidae), feed on grasshopper eggs in soil and undergo hypermetamorphosis. They normally enter diapause as a pseudopupa at the fifth instar, a form characteristic of hypermetamorphosis for meloid beetles. However, fourth-instar larvae exposed to long days and high temperature avoid pseudopupal diapause and pupate directly from the fourth instar. Fourth-instar larvae also tend to pupate precociously with a smaller body size if they are deprived of food. In these larvae, the critical day-length controlling induction of pseudopupal diapause becomes shorter than that for fully-fed larvae. In this study, we examined how the reaction norm of food-deprived E. gorhami larvae functions in nature by rearing insects from the egg stage outdoors in different seasons with manipulation of the food supply. The results indicated that most fully-fed larvae entered pseudopupal diapause, whereas food-deprived larvae tended to pupate precociously without entering diapause, especially early in the season. The resulting smaller adults reproduced early in the autumn and their progeny attained the pseudopupal stage before winter, indicating that the reaction norm may have an adaptive role in controlling seasonal development in the face of food shortages, producing a bivoltine life cycle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although late-onset complications are important factors related to inadequate outcomes of lung transplantation (LTx), little is known about them. The results of LTx for lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) patients, which is a large cohort of LTx recipients in Japan, especially with late-onset complications, are reported. METHODS Thirteen consecutive LTx cases with LAM at our institute were evaluated, and those with late-onset complications were identified. RESULTS The 5-year survival rate was 69.2%. There were 4 cases with late-onset complications. Case 1: A 35-year-old woman who underwent right single LTx and sustained uncontrollable massive chylous ascites. She underwent placement of a peritoneal-venous shunt, and the ascites was controlled. Unfortunately, she died of small cell cervical cancer (SCCC) 43 months after the LTx. Case 2: A 50-year-old woman who underwent left single LTx had pneumothorax of the native lung 16 months after the LTx. She underwent operative repair of the right lung with a polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheet. She had no recurrence of pneumothorax 1 year after the operation. Case 3: A 33-year-old woman, who underwent left single LTx, had recurrence of LAM in the transplanted lung 2 years after the LTx. She was started on sirolimus. Case 4: A 47-year-old woman, who underwent right single LTx, developed repeated high fevers. She developed an acute abdomen, and swollen subcutaneous lymph nodes were found. After lymph node biopsy, she was diagnosed as having post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, and she died 8 months after the LTx. CONCLUSION It is hoped that these reports and the knowledge gained from them help improve the outcomes of LTx recipients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevention and early detection of post-transplantation rejection and infection are key clinical points to achieve long-term survival after lung transplantation. Although surveillance bronchoscopy (SB) is performed in many transplantation centers, it is still controversial because of its undefined clinical significance and its possible complications. We evaluated the clinical utility of SB after cadaveric lung transplantation in Japan, where bilateral transplantation is officially limited to patients medically requiring bilateral grafts. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-eight patients who underwent cadaveric lung transplantation followed by SB were retrospectively analyzed with reference to the results of bronchoscopy. SB is routinely performed at 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months after lung transplantation and annually thereafter. Clinically indicated bronchoscopy (CIB) is considered in patients with suspected rejection or airway infection, and for follow-up examination after treatment for acute rejection. RESULTS There were 206 bronchoscopies, including 189 SBs and 17 CIBs, performed in 28 patients who underwent cadaveric lung transplantation between 2000 and 2013 at Osaka University Hospital. Among SBs, 92 (49%) showed positive results of transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and intervention was applied following 34 SBs (18%). Among CIBs, 8 (47%) showed positive results of TBLB or BAL, with intervention performed in 3 patients (18%). A2-3 and B2R findings according to the revised International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) rejection score and airway infection/colonization were frequently observed within a year following lung transplantation. Cytomegalovirus infection was found in 7 SBs (6%) by TBLB only within 2 months after transplantation. Regarding complications, moderate bleeding occurred in 21 (11%), pneumothorax in 2 (1%), prolonged hypoxemia in 1 (0.5%), and pneumonia in 1 (0.5%) among the 189 SBs. CONCLUSION SB frequently detects rejection and airway infection or colonization with minimum complications, especially within 12 months after cadaveric lung transplantation.

Effect of increased male and female age at mating on the reproductive performance of Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Crambidae: Lepidoptera). JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC ENTOMOLOGY 2014; 107:1434-9. Abstract
The success of mating disruption using synthetic sex pheromones depends not only on preventing mating, but also on delayed mating in the target insect. Using the rice leaffolder moth, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée), we determined the effect of increased age at mating imposed on males only (male treatment), females only (female treatment),or on both sexes simultaneously (both sexes treatment). These increased age treatments had a negative effect on the percentage of mating, the total number of eggs, and the hatchability. The female reproductive performance in C. medinalis was decreased with increased moths' age. The both sexes treatment had the most potent negative effect on reproductive performance. Longevity of mated moths and duration of the preoviposition period in C. medinalis were not significantly different among these increased age treatments. The underlying mechanisms causing a decline in female reproductive performance of C. medinalis when increased age was imposed on males versus females and the potential of using mating disruption strategies to control the populations in paddy fields are discussed.

Anatomical predictors of major adverse limb events after infrapopliteal angioplasty for patients with critical limb ischaemia due to pure isolated infrapopliteal lesions. Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg 2012; 44:318-24. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify anatomical factors associated with major adverse limb events (MALE) after angioplasty as the basis for a novel morphology-driven classification of infrapopliteal lesions. DESIGN Retrospective-multicenter study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between March 2004 and October 2010, 1057 limbs from 884 patients with CLI due to isolated infrapopliteal lesions were studied. Freedom-from MALE, defined as major amputation or any reintervention, was assessed out to 2 years by the Kaplan-Meier methods. Anatomical predictors and risk stratification for MALE were analyzed by multivariate analysis. RESULTS Freedom-from MALE was 47 ± 1% at 2 years. Lesion calcification, target vessel diameter<3.0 mm, lesion length>300 mm and no below-the-ankle (BA) run-off were positively associated with MALE by multivariate-analysis. The total number of risk factors was used to calculate the risk score for each limbs for subsequent categorization into 3 groups with 0 or 1 (low-risk), 2 (moderate-risk) and 3 or 4 (high-risk) factors. Freedom-from MALE at 2 year-rates was 59% in low-risk, 46% in moderate-risk, and 29% in high-risk, respectively. CONCLUSION Target vessel diameter <3.0 mm, lesion calcification, lesion length > 300 mm and no-BA run-off were associated with MALE after infrapopliteal angioplasty. Risk stratification based on these predictors allows estimation of future incidence of MALE in CLI with isolated infrapopliteal lesions.

Abstract
Larvae of the bean blister beetle, Epicauta gorhami (Coleoptera: Meloidae), feed on grasshopper eggs in soil and undergo hypermetamorphosis. This beetle undergoes larval diapause in the fifth instar as a pseudopupa, a form characteristic of hypermetamorphosis in meloid beetles. This pseudopupal diapause is maintained for a long period if the larvae are kept under continuous diapause-inducing short-day conditions. In the present study, the effects of temperature and photoperiod on termination of pseudopupal diapause in E. gorhami were examined using pseudopupae obtained under 12L-12D at 25°C. Diapause was terminated by exposure to low or high temperature, but not by transfer to long-day conditions. The pseudopupal stage comprises diapause and post-diapause phases despite its unchanging appearance. The optimum low temperature for diapause termination was 10-15°C, and a higher or lower temperature was less effective. There was an individual variation in the low temperature requirement for diapause termination and post-diapause development may not occur until this requirement is satisfied. Although under natural conditions pseudopupae may encounter low temperatures that are effective for diapause termination at different ages, our results show that pseudopupae at various ages respond similarly to low temperature exposure. This response may ensure that resumption of development synchronizes in a population.

Quantitative short-day photoperiodic response in larval development and its adaptive significance in an adult-overwintering cerambycid beetle, Phytoecia rufiventris. JOURNAL OF INSECT PHYSIOLOGY 2011; 57:1053-1059. Abstract
The chrysanthemum longicorn beetle, Phytoecia rufiventris, overwinters in the adult stage and reproduces in spring. Larvae of this beetle develop during summer inside a host stem or root. In the present study, photoperiodic control of larval development and its adaptive significance were examined in this beetle using an artificial diet. Larvae showed a short-day photoperiodic response at 25°C with a critical day length of around 14 h; larvae reared under short-day conditions pupated, whereas those reared under long-day conditions entered summer diapause with some supernumerary molts and did not pupate. A similar response was found at 30°C, but with a shorter critical day length. Below the critical day length, a shorter day length corresponded to a shorter larval period. Larvae transferred from long-day conditions to various photoperiods showed a similar quantitative response. Field rearing of larvae starting at various times of year showed that pupation occurs within a relatively short period in early autumn. Field rearing of pupae and adults at various times indicated that only pupation in early autumn results in a high survival rate until winter. Earlier or later pupation led to a low survival rate due to death before overwintering in the adult and pupal stages, respectively. Thus, in P. rufiventris, timing of pupation regulated by the quantitative short-day photoperiodic response is vital for survival. Relatively lower developmental threshold in the pupal stage supports this hypothesis.

MicroRNA-mediated downregulation of mTOR/FGFR3 controls tumor growth induced by Src-related oncogenic pathways. Oncogene 2011; 30:3489-501. Abstract
The tyrosine kinase c-Src is upregulated in various human cancers, but the molecular mechanisms underlying c-Src-mediated tumor growth remain unclear. Here we examined the involvement of microRNAs in the c-Src-mediated tumor growth. Microarray profiling revealed that c-Src activation downregulates a limited set of microRNAs, including miR-99a, which targets oncogenic mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3). Re-expression of miR-99a suppressed tumor growth of c-Src-transformed cells, and this effect was restored by the overexpression of mTOR. The downregulation of miR-99a was also observed in epidermal growth factor- and Ras-transformed cells, and it was suppressed by inhibiting the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Furthermore, miR-99a downregulation is associated with mTOR/FGFR3 upregulation in various human lung cancer cells/tissues. The tumorigenicity of these cells was suppressed by the introduction of miR-99a. These findings suggest that the miR-99a-mTOR/FGFR3 pathway is crucial for controlling tumor growth in a wide range of human cancers that harbor upregulation of the Src-related oncogenic pathways.

Serum magnesium, ambulatory blood pressure, and carotid artery alteration: the Ohasama study. Am J Hypertens 2010; 23:1292-8. Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the associations of 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) and serum magnesium level (sMg) with risk of carotid artery alteration in a general population. METHODS sMg and ABP, monitored every 30 min, were measured in 728 subjects (mean age, 67 years) from the Japanese general population. The extent of carotid artery alteration was evaluated according to mean common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and the presence of focal carotid plaque. To determine the association of sMg and carotid artery alteration, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) (for adjusted mean IMT) or multiple logistic regression analysis (for odds ratio (OR) for the presence of carotid plaques) was used. RESULTS Lower sMg was significantly associated with mean IMT (P = 0.004) and risk of ≥2 carotid plaques (P = 0.03) after adjusting for possible confounding factors, including 24-h ABP (systolic), creatinine clearance (Ccr) (estimated using the Cockcroft-Gault equation), and serum minerals (sodium, potassium, calcium, and inorganic phosphorus). Even when 24-h ABP values were within normal range (<130/80 mm Hg), lower sMg levels (<2.2 mg/dl) were significantly associated with mean IMT (P = 0.007) and risk of ≥2 carotid plaques (OR, 2.14; 95% confidence interval, 1.18-3.85; P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Both 24-h ABP and lower sMg were closely and independently associated with risk of carotid artery alteration. Further investigations are needed to examine the relationship between sMg levels and the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

Photoperiodic response of larvae of the yellow-spotted longicorn beetle Psacothea hilaris after removal of the stemmata. JOURNAL OF INSECT PHYSIOLOGY 2010; 56:1125-1129. Abstract
The role of the stemmata in photoperiodism has been examined in holometabolic insects, but the only reliable results in Coleoptera have been obtained in Leptocarabus kumagaii (Carabidae), the larvae of which do not respond to photoperiod without stemmata. In the present study, photoperiodism was examined in another coleopteran, Psacothea hilaris (Pascoe) (Cerambycidae), after surgical removal of the stemmata. Larvae reared under short-day conditions and transferred to long-day conditions on day 2 of the 5th instar pupated without further larval molts, whereas those continuously reared under short-day conditions underwent supernumerary molts and did not pupate. When the stemmata were removed on day 2 of the 5th instar, the larvae pupated under long-day conditions but did not do so under short-day conditions. However, under long-day conditions some underwent supernumerary molts before pupation. Larvae from which the sensilla trichodeum were removed showed a similar response to that of stemmata-deficient larvae, and larvae from which stemmata were removed at a younger stage (day 2 of the 4th instar) responded to photoperiod similarly to intact larvae. Thus, supernumerary molts under long-day conditions after removal of the stemmata were attributed to injury due to surgery, rather than a change in photoperiodic photoreception. Therefore, we conclude that larvae of P. hilaris show a photoperiodic response after removal of stemmata, in contrast to larvae of L. kumagaii.

Abstract
The levels of three hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) isomers and ΣHBCDs in 54 wild and 11 farmed seafood samples collected from four regions of Japan were determined by LC/MS/MS. For the fish classified as Anguilliformes, Perciformes, Clupeiformes and farmed Salmoniformes, the medians (ranges) of ΣHBCDs are 2.09 (0.05-36.9), 0.75 (ND-26.2), 0.12 (0.09-77.3) and 1.29 (1.09-1.34) ng g(-1)ww, respectively. However, HBCDs were not detected in samples classified as Crustacea, Mollusca, Pleuronectiformes and Scorpaeniformes, or if detected, the levels were very low. The rank correlation between ΣHBCDs (or α-HBCD) and fat content could not be found except for the Japanese sea bass of the Tohoku region. In HBCD isomer profiles, for fish samples above 20 ng g(-1)ww, the trend was found that γ-HBCD was predominant, which suggests the influence of discharge from a nearby industrial plant. In the other wild fish and the farmed fish samples, on the other hand, α-HBCD was mostly predominant, which suggests biomagnification via the food chain. Additionally, to assess the risk to human health, based on the determined HBCD median concentrations for Anguilliformes, farmed Salmoniformes and Perciformes, the daily intake of HBCDs from fish by an average Japanese adult was tentatively calculated to be 3.7, 2.3 and 1.3 ng (kg body weight)(-1) d(-1), respectively.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The role of the two distinct retinal photoreceptor organs in photoreception for photoperiodism was examined in the carabid beetle, Leptocarabus kumagaii, by surgical removal. This beetle shows long-day and short-day photoperiodic responses in the larval and adult stages, respectively. Larval diapause in the final instar is induced under short-day conditions whereas pupation occurs without diapause under long-day conditions. Adult reproductive diapause is terminated under short-day conditions but maintained under long-day conditions. The stemmata of the larvae and compound eyes of the adults were removed and the responses of the animals to photoperiod were compared to those of intact beetles. When all the stemmata were removed, larvae pupated without entering diapause under both long-day and short-day conditions, indicating that the larvae lacking stemmata were incapable of photoreception for photoperiodism. As in other holometabolous insects, the stemmata migrated into the brain during metamorphosis and remained rudimentarily in the optic lobe of the adult brain. However, these stemmata-derived organs were found to be no longer necessary for photoperiodism, because adults lacking the stemmata-derived organs responded to photoperiod normally. By contrast, removal of the compound eyes in adults resulted in the termination of reproductive diapause under both long-day and short-day conditions, indicating that photoreception for photoperiodism in the adult stage is performed by the compound eyes. Therefore, the site of photoperiodic photoreception in L. kumagaii appear to change from the stemmata to the compound eyes during metamorphosis.

Abstract
We analyzed the long-term results of aortic root replacement with a composite graft. Since 1992, 127 patients had undergone aortic root replacement with a composite graft. There were 92 men and 35 women with a mean age of 56.5 years. There were 69 patients with annuloaortic ectasia, 17 aortic dissections, and 41 ascending aortic dilatation due to aortic valve disease. Marfan syndrome was diagnosed in 19 patients. As surgical procedure, button technique was used in 90 patients, Cabrol technique in 11, and Piehler technique in 26. Open distal anastomosis was performed in 82 patients to avoid clamp injury of rest aorta. Early mortality was 3.1% and no major morbid events had occurred. Follow-up was completed in 95.9% of the patients and the mean follow-up period was 6.1 years. Actuarial survival at 5, 10, and 15 years was 86.2%, 83.4%, and 83.4%, respectively. Actuarial freedom from aortic valve reoperation at 10 and 15 years was 99.2% and 95.7%, respectively. The results of aortic root replacement with a composite graft were excellent. This procedure should be the 1st choice for surgical treatment of the aortic root disease.
