Abstract
The reduction of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution by UV/TiO2 reduction process was studied under various solution pH values, TiO2 dosages, light intensities, dissolved oxygen levels and other operating conditions. The reduction rates of Cr(VI) by photocatalytic-induced elections were significantly higher for acidic solutions than those for alkaline solutions. Increasing the light intensity would drastically increase the reduction rate of Cr(VI), but was ultimately influenced by the amount of TiO2 present in solutions. The presence of dissolved oxygen had minimum effect on the reduction of Cr(VI) by UV/TiO2 process in acidic solutions. The presence of ethanol might act as scavenger for holes and promoted the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by electrons. The Cr(VI) adsorbed on the surface of TiO2 particles was observed to be photoreduced to Cr(III) almost completely.

Abstract
This is the first report of the application of silver-ion impregnated high-performance liquid chromatography (Ag(+)-HPLC) to the separation of complex mixtures of conjugated linolenic acid (CLA) isomers present in commercial CLA sources and foods and in biological specimens. This method showed a clear separation of CLA isomers into three groups related to their trans,trans, cis,trans or trans,cis, and cic,cis configuration of the conjugated double-bond system. In addition, this method separated individual positional isomers of the conjugated diene system within each geometrical isomeric group. Following Ag(+)-HPLC isolation, gas chromatography (GC)-electron impact mass spectrometry, and GC-direct deposition-Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy were used to confirm the identity of two major positional isomers in the cis/trans region, i.e., delta 8,10- and delta 11,13-octadecadienoic acids, which had not been chromatographically resolved previously. Furthermore, the potential of this method was demonstrated by showing different Ag(+)-HPLC profiles exhibiting patterns of isomeric distributions for biological specimens from animals fed a diet containing a commercial CLA preparation, as well as for a commercial cheese product.

Abstract
Pigs were fed a commercial conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) mixture, prepared by alkali isomerization of sunflower oil, at 2% of the basal diet, from 61.5 to 106 kg live weight, and were compared to pigs fed the same basal diet with 2% added sunflower oil. The total lipids from liver, heart, inner back fat, and omental fat of pigs fed the CLA diet were analyzed for the incorporation of CLA isomers into all the tissue lipid classes. A total of 10 lipid classes were isolated by three-directional thin-layer chromatography and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) on long capillary columns and by silver-ion high-performance liquid chromatography (Ag+-HPLC); cholesterol was determined spectrophotometrically. Only trace amounts (<0.1%; by GC) of the 9,11-18:2 cis/trans and trans,trans isomers were observed in pigs fed the control diet. Ten and twelve CLA isomers in the diet and in pig tissue lipids were separated by GC and Ag+- HPLC, respectively. The relative concentration of all the CLA isomers in the different lipid classes ranged from 1 to 6% of the total fatty acids. The four major cis/trans isomers (18.9% 11 cis,13 trans-18:2; 26.3% 10 trans,12 cis-18:2; 20.4% 9 cis,11 trans-18:2; and 16.1% 8 trans, 10 cis-18:2) constituted 82% of the total CLA isomers in the dietary CLA mixture, and smaller amounts of the corresponding cis,cis (7.4%) and trans,trans (10.1%) isomers were present. The distribution of CLA isomers in inner back fat and in omental fat of the pigs was similar to that found in the diet. The liver triacylglycerols (TAG), free fatty acids (FFA), and cholesteryl esters showed a similar pattern to that found in the diet. The major liver phospholipids showed a marked increase of 9 cis,11 trans-18:2, ranging from 36 to 54%, compared to that present in the diet. However, liver diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG) showed a high incorporation of the 11 cis,13 trans-18:2 isomer (43%). All heart lipid classes, except TAG, showed a high content of 11 cis,13 trans-18:2, which was in marked contrast to results in the liver. The relative proportion of 11 cis,13 trans-18:2 ranged from 30% in the FFA to 77% in DPG. The second major isomer in all heart lipids was 9 cis,11 trans-18:2. In both liver and heart lipids the relative proportions of both 10 trans,12 cis-18:2 and 8 trans, 10 cis-18:2 were significantly lower compared to that found in the diet. The FFA in liver and heart showed the highest content of trans,trans isomers (31 to 36%) among all the lipid classes. The preferential accumulation of the 11 cis,13 trans-18:2 into cardiac lipids, and in particular the major phospholipid in the inner mitochondrial membrane, DPG, in both heart and liver, appears unique and may be of concern. The levels of 11 cis,13 trans-18:2 naturally found in foods have not been established.

Abstract
Commercial cheese products were analyzed for their composition and content of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers. The total lipids were extracted from cheese using petroleum ether/diethyl ether and methylated using NaOCH3. The fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) were separated by gas chromatography (GC), using a 100-m polar capillary column, into nine minor peaks besides that of the major rumenic acid, 9c,11t-octadecadienoic acid (18:2), and were attributed to 19 CLA isomers. By using silver ion-high performance liquid chromatography (Ag+ -HPLC), CLA isomers were resolved into seven trans,trans (5-9%), three cis/trans (10-13%), and five cis,cis (<1%) peaks, totaling 15, in addition to that of the 9c,11t-18:2 (78-84%). The FAME of total cheese lipids were fractionated by semipreparative Ag+ -HPLC and converted to their 4,4-dimethyloxazoline derivatives after hydrolysis to free fatty acids. The geometrical configuration of the CLA isomers was confirmed by GC-direct deposition-Fourier transform infrared, and their double bond positions were established by GC-electron ionization mass spectrometry. Reconstructed mass spectral ion profiles of the m + 2 allylic ion and the m + 3 ion (where m is the position of the second double bond in the parent conjugated fatty acid) were used to identify the minor CLA isomers in cheese. Cheese contained 7t,9c-18:2 and the previously unreported 11t,13c-18:2 and 12c,14t-18:2, and their trans,trans and cis,cis geometric isomers. Minor amounts of 8,10-, and 10,12-18:2 were also found. The predicted elution orders of the different CLA isomers on long polar capillary GC and Ag+ -HPLC columns are also presented.

Abstract
Operating from one to six silver ion-high-performance liquid chromatography (Ag+-HPLC) columns in series progressively improved the resolution of the methyl esters of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomeric mixtures from natural and commercial products. In natural products, the 8 trans, 10 cis-octadecadienoic (18:2) acid was resolved from the more abundant 7 trans, 9 cis-18:2, and the 10 trans, 12 cis-18:2 was separated from the major 9 cis, 11 trans-18:2 peak. In addition, both 11 trans, 13 cis-18:2 and 11 cis, 13 trans-18:2 isomers were found in natural products and were separated; the presence of the latter, 11 cis, 13 trans-18:2, was established in commercial CLA preparations. Three Ag+-HPLC columns in series appeared to be the best compromise to obtain satisfactory resolution of most CLA isomers found in natural products. A single Ag+-HPLC column in series with one of several normal-phase columns did not improve the resolution of CLA isomers as compared to that of the former alone. The 20:2 conjugated fatty acid isomers 11 cis, 13 trans-20:2 and 12 trans, 14 cis-20:2, which were synthesized by alkali isomerization from 11 cis, 14 cis-20:2, eluted in the same region of the Ag+-HPLC chromatogram just before the corresponding geometric CLA isomers. Therefore, CLA isomers will require isolation based on chain length prior to Ag+-HPLC separation. The positions of conjugated double bonds in 20:2 and 18:2 isomers were established by gas chromatography-electron ionization mass spectrometry as their 4,4-dimethyloxazoline derivatives. The double-bond geometry was determined by gas chromatography-direct deposition-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and by the Ag+-HPLC relative elution order.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is likely to be associated with viral replication in vivo, but little is known concerning the dynamics of HCV turnover. We performed serial measurements of serum HCV-RNA levels following orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) in nine patients with HCV-positive cirrhosis. Serum HCV-RNA levels were determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction before, immediately after, and for up to 1 month after OLT. There was a rapid decline in HCV-RNA levels from 3.1 +/- 1.3 x 10(5) copies/ mL (mean +/- SEM) preoperatively to 0.15 +/- 0.6 x 10(5) copies/mL on the first and 0.16 +/- 0.6 x 10(5) copies/mL on the second postoperative day (mean viral half-life, 4.0 +/- 0.5 h). Thereafter, HCV-RNA levels increased in all but one patient, and by postoperative day 8 reached 3.6 +/- 1.3 x 10(5) copies/mL, exceeding the preoperative levels irrespective of the use or not of rescue immunosuppressive therapy including steroid bolus administration. In most patients, serum virions continued to increase averaging 11.6 +/- 2.8 x 10(5) copies/mL on the 30th postoperative day. These findings indicate that the half-life of HCV is quite short, and that extrahepatic viral replication contributes little to the total virus pool in serum. Furthermore, the marked HCV replication beginning as early as the third postoperative day strongly suggests that the liver graft is rapidly reinfected by HCV after OLT.

Abstract
Finite element analyses were performed for various shapes of dental implant to study effects on stress distribution generated in the surrounding jaw bone and to determine an optimal thread shape for even stress distribution. It was found that the square thread shape filleted with a small radius was more effective on stress distribution than other dental implants used in the analyses. Additional analyses were performed on the implant with the thread shape obtained from previous analyses for varying other design parameters, such as the width of thread end and height of thread for various load directions, to determine the optimal dimensions of the implant. Stress distribution was more effective in the case when the width of thread end and the height of thread were 0.5p and 0.46p, respectively, where p is the screw pitch. Then, using the optimal implant thread dimensions determined previously, stress analyses were performed with various screw pitches and implant lengths, to investigate effects on stress distribution and to find the way to reduce the maximum effective stress generated in the jaw bone. Results show that the maximum effective stress decreased not only as screw pitch decreased gradually but also as implant length increased.

Abstract
The identity of a previously unrecognized conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomer, 7 trans, 9 cis-octadecadienoic acid (18:2) was confirmed in milk, cheese, beef, human milk, and human adipose tissue. The 7 trans, 9 cis-18:2 isomer was resolved chromatographically as the methyl ester by silver ion-high-performance liquid chromatography (Ag+-HPLC); it eluted after the major 9 cis, 11 trans-18:2 isomer (rumenic acid) in the natural products analyzed. In the biological matrices investigated by Ag+-HPLC, the 7 trans, 9 cis-18:2 peak was generally due to the most abundant minor CLA isomer, ranging in concentration from 3 to 16% of total CLA. By gas chromatography (GC) with long polar capillary columns, the methyl ester of 7 trans, 9 cis-18:2 was shown to elute near the leading edge of the major 9 cis, 11 trans-18:2 peak, while the 4,4-dimethyloxazoline (DMOX) derivative permitted partial resolution of these two CLA isomers. The DMOX derivative of this new CLA isomer was analyzed by gas chromatography-electron ionization mass spectrometry (GC-EIMS). The double bond positions were at delta7 and delta9 as indicated by the characteristic mass spectral fragment ions at m/z 168, 180, 194, and 206, and their allylic cleavages at m/z 154 and 234. The cis/trans double-bond configuration was established by GC-direct deposition-Fourier transform infrared as evidenced from the doublet at 988 and 949 cm(-1) and absorptions at 3020 and 3002 cm(-1). The 7 trans, 9 cis-18:2 configuration was established by GC-EIMS for the DMOX derivative of the natural products examined, and by comparison to a similar product obtained from treatment of a mixture of methyl 8-hydroxy- and 11-hydroxyoctadec-9 cis enoates with BF3 in methanol.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In order to achieve optimal effects, growth factors including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) should be delivered with a biodegradable carrier that will release therapeutic concentrations over a sufficient length of time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bone regenerative effect of PDGF-BB delivered with a chitosan/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) sponge carrier in a rat calvarial defect model. METHODS The PDGF-BB-loaded chitosan/TCP sponge carrier was fabricated by freeze-drying a mixture of chitosan solution and TCP powder and soaking in a PDGF-BB solution. The release kinetics of PDGF-BB loaded onto the sponge were measured in vitro with 125I-labeled PDGF-BB. Chitosan/TCP sponges with and without PDGF-BB were implanted into 8 mm calvarial defects in rats. Rats were sacrificed at 2 and 4 weeks following implantation, and histologic and histomorphometrical examinations were performed. RESULTS In vitro evaluation demonstrated that an effective therapeutic concentration of PDGF-BB following a high initial burst release was maintained throughout the examination period. In the histologic examination, the chitosan/TCP sponge carrier promoted osseous healing of the rat calvarial defects as compared to controls. The addition of PDGF-BB to the carrier further enhanced bone regeneration. Evidence of the degraded sponge matrix was observed mingled within the newly formed bone without connective tissue encapsulation. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study support the use of chitosan/TCP sponges as a delivery system for growth factors and demonstrate that PDGF-BB loaded onto chitosan/TCP sponge carriers has an osteogenic effect on bone regeneration in vivo.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resection of the non-fibrotic pancreas is prone to postoperative pancreatic fistula because of well preserved exocrine secretions and easily crushed soft parenchyma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate ultrasonic dissection for division of the non-fibrotic pancreas in distal pancreatectomy. METHODS All pancreata included in this study were soft on direct palpation and their main ducts had no dilatation, at least proximally from the transection line. Fifty-eight patients with gastric cancer or pancreatic disease were randomly assigned to the two groups. In the ultrasonic dissection (UD) group (n = 27), all pancreatic ducts were identified and ligated securely. The stump was left open without parenchymal suturing. In the conventional (CV) group (n = 31), the pancreas was cut with a knife and the stump was oversewn in mattress fashion. The main pancreatic duct was ligated in all patients in both groups. Pancreatic fistula was defined as a pancreatic fluid discharge for more than 7 days after operation diagnosed according to amylase concentration in the drainage fluid. RESULTS In the UD group, approximately 20-30 tubes including a mean(s.d.) 5.2(0.8) (range 4-6) pancreatic ducts were skeletonized and ligated per patient. There were nine pancreatic fistulas (16 per cent); one in the UD group and eight in the CV group (P = 0.020). CONCLUSION In distal pancreatectomy for the non-fibrotic pancreas, ultrasonic dissection without suture closure of the stump reduced the incidence of pancreatic fistula compared with conventional division and suture, in this randomized trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chitosan is a biodegradable natural polymer that has been shown to improve wound healing. This study aimed to develop chitosan/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) sponges as tissue engineering scaffolds for bone formation by three-dimensional osteoblast culture. METHODS The sponges were prepared by freeze-drying and cross-linking a mixture of chitosan solution with TCP. Fetal rat calvarial osteoblastic cells were isolated, cultured, and seeded into the sponges. The cell-sponge constructs were cultured for 56 days. Cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) activity, and calcium deposition in the cell-sponge constructs were measured at 1, 7, 14, 28, and 56 days. Histologic examination was performed with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS Chitosan/TCP sponges supported the proliferation of osteoblastic cells as well as their differentiation as indicated by high ALPase activities and deposition of mineralized matrices by the cells. Light and scanning electron microscopic examination indicated that seeded osteoblastic cells were well attached to sponge matrices and proliferated in a multi-layer fashion. Small bone-like spicules were observed on the sponge matrix at 14 days. Seeded cells appeared to be embedded in the newly formed tissue matrix, which is characteristic of the osteoblast differentiation and their progression into osteocytic cells. The amount of mineralized tissue formed in the sponge at 56 days was significant. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the chitosan/TCP sponge is a feasible tool as a scaffolding material to grow osteoblast in a three-dimensional structure for transplantation into a site for bone regeneration.

METHODS The outcome of 476 patients with HCC who underwent hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin (HAIC) were compared with 1466 patients who did not receive active therapy. RESULTS A survival benefit of the therapy after adjusting for known risk factors was observed (hazard ratio, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.41-0.56; P<0.0001). In propensity score-matched analysis (n=682), median survival time was longer for patients who underwent chemotherapy (14.0 months) than for patients who did not receive active treatment (5.2 months, P<0.0001). CONCLUSION For advanced HCC, HAIC is considered to be an effective treatment.

Abstract
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) mixtures were isomerized with p-toluenesulfinic acid or I2 catalyst. The resultant mixtures of the eight cis/trans geometric isomers of 8,10-, 9,11-, 10,12-, and 11,13-octadecadienoic (18:2) acid methyl esters were separated by silver ion-high-performance liquid chromatography (Ag+-HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC). Ag+-HPLC allowed the separation of all positional CLA isomers and geometric cis/trans CLA isomers except 10,12-18:2. However, one of the 8,10 isomers (8cis, 10trans-18:2) coeluted with the 9trans,11cis-18:2 isomer. There were differences in the elution order of the pairs of geometric CLA isomers resolved by Ag+-HPLC. For the 8,10 and 9,11 CLA isomers, cis,trans eluted before trans,cis, whereas the opposite elution pattern was observed for the 11,13-18:2 geometric isomers (trans,cis before cis,trans). All eight cis/trans CLA isomers were separated by GC on long polar capillary columns only when their relative concentrations were about equal. Large differences in the relative concentration of the CLA isomers found in natural products obscured the resolution and identification of a number of minor CLA isomers. In such cases, GC-mass spectrometry of the dimethyloxazoline derivatives was used to identify and confirm coeluting CLA isomers. For the same positional isomer, the cis,trans consistently eluted before the trans,cis CLA isomers by GC. High resolution mass spectrometry (MS) selected ion recording (SIR) of the molecular ions of the 18:1, 18:2, and 18:3 fatty acid methyl esters served as an independent and highly sensitive method to confirm CLA methyl ester peak assignments in GC chromatograms obtained from food samples by flame-ionization detection. The high-resolution MS data were used to correct for the nonselectivity of the flame-ionization detector.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to identify oxidation products of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a series of octadecadienoic acids with conjugated double bonds, which have been reported to have antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties. Reference materials of CLA were oxidized in different concentrations of water/methanol; for example, 0.5 g octadecadienoic acid was dissolved in 50 mL methanol, and 100 mL water was added; this suspension was heated at 50 degrees C and continuously aerated. Aliquots of 5 mL were taken over time, extracted with ether, treated with diazomethane and examined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and/or gas chromatography with flame-ionization detection. Products identified included the following furan fatty acids (FFAs): 8,11-epoxy-8,10-octadecadienoic; 9,12-epoxy-9,11-octadecadienoic; 10,13-epoxy-10,12-octadecadienoic; and 11,14-epoxy-11,13-octadecadienoic. Conjugated dienes should be considered as a possible source of FFAs, and CLA may have products common to furans in their overall oxidative scheme.

Abstract
Platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) was incorporated into porous poly (L-lactide) (PLLA) membranes with an aim of improving early bone healing in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) therapy. Porous PDGF-BB loaded membranes were fabricated by coating PDGF-BB-dissolved PLLA methylene chloride-ethyl acetate solutions on polyglycolic acid (PGA) meshes. Release kinetics of PDGF-BB, biologic activity, degradability and guided tissue regenerative potentials of the membranes were investigated. Release of PDGF-BB could be controlled by adding bovine serum albumin that may provide porous diffusion channels for PDGF-BB release and by varying initial loading content of PDGF-BB. Biologic activity of PDGF-BB in the membranes was ascertained by fibroblast chemotaxis. PDGF-BB loaded membranes maintained proper degradation property for periodontal application. PDGF-BB loaded membrane markedly increased new bone formation in rat calvarial defects, and completed bony reunion after 2 weeks of implantation period. These results suggested that PDGF-BB loaded PLLA membrane might potentially enhance guided tissue regenerative efficacy.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB) loaded moldable porous poly (L-lactide) (PLLA)-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) membranes for guided bone regeneration (GBR) therapy. The membranes were designed to fit various types of bone defect sites. PDGF-BB-dissolved PLLA-TCP in methylene chloride-ethyl acetate solution was cast on a dome shaped metallic mold to fabricate a model membrane. The release rate of PDGF-BB, the osteoblast attachment test, and guided bone regeneration potential were evaluated with PDGF-BB-loaded PLLA-TCP membranes. Regular pores were generated throughout the membrane mainly due to phase inversion of PLLA-methylene chloride-ethyl acetate solution. A therapeutic amount of PDGF-BB was released from the membrane. The release rate could be controlled by varying the initial loading content of PDGF-BB. A significant amount of cells attached onto the PDGF-BB-loaded membrane rather than onto the unloaded membrane. Dome shaped bone formation was achieved in rabbit calvaria at 4 weeks. This indicated that restoration of bone defects to the bone's original shape can be made possible by using molded membranes, which guide bone regeneration along with providing sufficient spaces. Bone forming efficiency was increased remarkably due to PDGF-BB release from PLLA-TCP membranes. These results suggested that the PDGF-BB releasing molded PLLA-TCP membrane may potentially improve GBR efficiency in various types of bone defects.

Abstract
The minimum graft volume still remains unclear in reduced-size liver transplantation (RLT). This study reports the improved survival of canine RLT using a quarter graft with the aid of a portahepatic vein shunt (PHVS). In beagles, the donor liver was reduced to the right lateral and caudate lobes (quarter graft) with or without provision of PHVS, and transplanted orthotopically in the recipient. The PHVS was established by an end-to-end anastomosis of the portal vein branch and the hepatic vein in the resected left lateral lobe. Liver chemistries including arterial blood ketone body ratio (AKBR) were serially measured during and after surgery. All seven animals with PHVS survived more than 3 days (mean +/- SD; 5.3 +/- 1.7 days), whereas all six without PHVS died within 3 days (1.8 +/- 0.8 days, P < 0.01). Portal vein pressures immediately after recirculation in animals with and without PHVS were 8.5 +/- 1.2 mmHg and 16.9 +/- 3.1 mmHg, respectively (P < 0.01). Regardless of the presence or absence of PHVS, AKBR dropped to a level lower than 0.7 during the anhepatic period and returned promptly to above 1.0 as early as 30 min after recirculation. Thereafter, the AKBR values in animals with PHVS remained higher than 1.0, whereas those in animals without PHVS showed a progressive decrease, showing a statistically significant difference between the two groups after 12 hr (P < 0.05). Graft function, as assessed by AKBR, was well correlated with survival and other liver chemistries. These results indicate that, in an extreme RLT, portal hypertension is a risk factor predisposing to graft failure, most likely by increasing microvascular injury after recirculation.

Abstract
With the aim of providing effective periodontal therapeutic modality, drug-releasing membranes for guided tissue regeneration (GTR) were developed. As GTR membranes, biodegradable barrier membranes composed of porous poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) films cast on poly(glycolide) (PGA) meshes were fabricated using an in-air drying phase inversion technique. PLLA was dissolved in methylene chloride-ethylacetate mixtures, cast on knitted PGA mesh, and then air-dried. Tetracycline, which is used in periodontal therapy because of its antibacterial activity and tissue regenerating effects, including osteoblast chemotactic effect and anti-collagenolytic activity, was incorporated into the membranes by adding it to PLLA solutions. The guided bone regenerating potential of tetracycline-loaded membranes was evaluated using release kinetics both in vitro and in vivo, biodegradation tests, and cell attachment tests. Homogeneous pores were generated both at the surface and in a sublayer of the membranes. The release kinetics of tetracycline depended mainly upon the hydrophilicity of tetracycline and the porosity of the membrane. The release rate further could be controlled by loaded drug contents. The release of tetracycline was appropriate for maintaining anti-microbial activity and for its tissue-regenerating potential. The membranes retained a proper degradation property, maintaining their mechanical integrity for the barrier function for 4 weeks. Tetracycline-loaded membranes induced increased cell attachment levels compared with those of unloaded membranes. Tetracycline-loaded membranes markedly increased new bone formation in rat calvarial defects and induced bony reunion after 2 weeks of implantation. These results suggest that tetracycline-loaded PLLA membranes potentially enhance guided tissue regenerative efficacy.

Abstract
The experiments on the adsorption of phenols from aqueous solution by Amberlite XAD-4, a polystyrene-divinylbenzene resin without functional group, were carried out under different conditions. The phenols studied in this research include 2-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, 2-methylphenol, and 2,4-dimethylphenol. The experimental observations indicate that adsorption behavior of various phenols by XAD-4 resin could be described by either Langmuir or Freundlich models. The removals of phenols by XAD-4 resin for solutions of different pH varied significantly and can be explained by the species distribution of phenols in aqueous solutions. Phenols were effectively removed by XAD-4 resin at acidic conditions where the presence of molecular phenol species dominates. The removal decreased sharply for alkaline solutions where the negatively-charged ionic species is the dominant phenol species. The proposed adsorption equilibrium model adequately describes the sorption behavior of phenols by XAD-4 resin. The presence of functional groups on the benzene ring of various phenols plays an important role on the extent of adsorption. The removals of phenols by adsorption were found to correlate with the octanol/water partition coefficients of various phenol compounds.

Abstract
Magnolol (1) and honokiol (2), main compounds from the stem bark of Magnolia obovata Thunb., were evaluated for an antimicrobial activity against periodontopathic microorganisms, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella gingivalis, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Capnocytophaga gingivalis, and Veillonella disper, and a cytotoxicity against human gingival fibroblasts and epithelial cells. Our results indicate that magnolol and honokiol, although less potent than chlorhexidine, show a significant antimicrobial activity against these microorganisms, and a relatively low cytotoxic effect on human gingival cells. Thus, it is suggested that magnolol and honokiol may have a potential therapeutic use as a safe oral antiseptic for the prevention and the treatment of periodontal disease.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to measure directly tissue oxygen tension (PO2) of the ischemically damaged pancreas graft during preservation by the two-layer (University of Wisconsin solution/perfluoro-chemical) method at 20 degrees C using Clark-type polarographic oxygen electrodes and to make clear the relationship of tissue PO2 and ATP levels during preservation and graft survival after transplantation in a canine model. During warm ischemia, tissue PO2 and ATP were dramatically decreased. Tissue PO2 continued to decrease, and tissue ATP levels were not elevated during simple storage in oxygenated University of Wisconsin solution at 20 degrees C. On the contrary, during preservation by the two-layer method at 20 degrees C, tissue PO2 promptly increased and reached about 50% of the preprocurement level at 30 min of preservation. Then, tissue PO2 was maintained this level throughout the preservation period. Tissue ATP levels were still low in the first 1 hr, but after that tissue ATP increased in a time-dependent manner. Consequently, the two-layer method at 20 degrees C could restore the viability of pancreas damaged by warm ischemia during 3- and 5-hr preservation. We conclude that the ischemically damaged pancreas grafts were oxygenated, and tissue ATP was increased during preservation by the two-layer (University of Wisconsin solution/pefluorochemical) method at 20 degrees C. Consequently, the graft was resuscitated and survived after transplantation.

Abstract
The inhibitory effects of SDZ PSC 833 (PSC833), a non-immunosuppressive cyclosporin derivative, on the P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated transport of doxorubicin and vinblastine were compared with those of cyclosporin A (Cs-A). The transcellular transport of the anticancer drugs and PSC833 across a monolayer of LLC-GA5-COL150 cells, which overexpress human P-gp, was measured. Both PSC833 and Cs-A inhibited P-gp-mediated transport of doxorubicin and vinblastine in a concentration-dependent manner and increased the intracellular accumulation of doxorubicin and vinblastine in LLC-GA5-COL150 cells. The values of the 50%-inhibitory concentration (IC50) of PSC833 and Cs-A for doxorubicin transport were 0.29 and 3.66 microM, respectively, and those for vinblastine transport were 1.06 and 5.10 microM, respectively. The IC50 of PSC833 for doxorubicin transport was about 4-fold less than that for vinblastine transport, suggesting that the combination of PSC833 and doxorubicin might be effective. PSC833 itself was not transported by P-gp and had higher lipophilicity than Cs-A. These results indicated that the inhibitory effect of PSC833 on P-gp-mediated transport was 5- to 10-fold more potent than that of Cs-A, and this higher inhibitory effect of PSC833 may be related to the absence of PSC833 transport by P-gp and to the higher lipophilicity of PSC833.

Abstract
To clarify how synthesized ATP is utilized to maintain cellular integrity during preservation by the two-layer method, we examined the effect of ouabain, inhibitor of ATP dependent Na+/K+ pump, on ATP tissue levels, graft weight, and vascular endothelial cells during 48 hr preservation by the two-layer method and pancreatic tissue perfusion and graft survival after transplantation in a canine model. Ouabain treatment did not affect ATP production but prevented its utilization by the sodium pump, and actually significantly increased ATP levels and decreased the weight loss of the graft. In addition, ouabain caused a significant increase of nuclear trypan-blue staining in vascular endothelial cells and a significant decrease of pancreatic tissue perfusion at reperfusion. Consequently, the grafts did not survive. We conclude that the two-layer method allows sufficient synthesis of ATP to drive the sodium pump and maintains membrane integrity of parenchymal cells and vascular endothelial cells, thus extending the period of preserved pancreatic viability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Compromised patients subjected to major digestive surgery frequently develop infective complications caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which may have dangerous consequences. This was a prospective randomized study to determine whether intranasal mupirocin could reduce postoperative infective complications in patients having digestive surgery. METHODS A total of 395 patients who underwent abdominal digestive surgery were assigned randomly into two groups: a treated group (193 patients) and controls (202). Patients in the treated group were given 30 mg mupirocin calcium hydrate ointment topically to each nostril three times a day on each of the 3 days before operation. The untreated group received no mupirocin treatment. RESULTS Most infections were due to Gram-negative bacteria in both groups. There were 21 Gram-positive infections detected at the surgical site, ten in the treated group and 11 in control patients. The incidence of pneumonia was significantly different between the groups (none in the treated group and five in control patients; P = 0.028). Four of five patients with pneumonia had a sputum culture containing MRSA. CONCLUSION Intranasal mupirocin treatment had no significant impact on surgical-site infection after digestive surgery.
