Bridging molecular photosensitizer and catalyst on carbon nanotubes toward enhanced selectivity and durability for CO2 photoreduction

Homogenous molecular photocatalysts for CO2 reduction, especially metal complex-based photosensitizer‒catalyst assemblages, have been attracting extensive research interests due to their efficiency and customizability. However, their low durability and recyclability limit practical applications. In this work, we immobilized the catalysts of metal terpyridyl complexes and the photosensitizer of [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2 onto the surface of carbon nanotubes through covalent bonds and electrostatic interactions, respectively, transforming the homogeneous system into a heterogeneous one. Our characterizations prove that these metal complexes are well dispersed on CNTs with a high loading (ca. 12 wt.%). Photocatalytic measurements reveal that catalytic activity is remarkably enhanced when the molecular catalysts are anchored, which is three times higher than that of homogeneous molecular catalysts. Moreover, when the photosensitizer of [Ru(bpy)3]Cl2 is immobilized, the side reaction of hydrogen evolution is completely suppressed and the selectivity for CO production reaches 100%, with its durability also significantly improved. This work provides an effective pathway for constructing heterogeneous photocatalysts based on rational assembly of efficient molecular photosensitizers and catalysts.

Tailoring Second Coordination Sphere for Tunable Solid-Liquid Interfacial Charge Transfer toward Enhanced Photoelectrochemical H2 Production

The recombination of photogenerated charge carriers severely limits the performance of photoelectrochemical (PEC) H2 production. Here, we demonstrate that this limitation can be overcome by optimizing the charge transfer dynamics at the solid-liquid interface via molecular catalyst design. Specifically, the surface of a p-Si photocathode is modulated using molecular catalysts with different metal atoms and organic ligands to improve H2 production performance. Co(pda-SO3H)2 is identified as an efficient and durable catalyst for H2 production through the rational design of metal centers and first/second coordination spheres. The modulation with Co(pda-SO3H)2, which contains an electron-withdrawing -SO3H group in the second coordination sphere, elevates the flat-band potential of the polished p-Si photocathode and nanoporous p-Si photocathode by 81 mV and 124 mV, respectively, leading to the maximized energy band bending and the minimized interfacial carrier transport resistance. Consequently, both the two photocathodes achieve the Faradaic efficiency of more than 95 % for H2 production, which is well maintained during 18 h and 21 h reaction, respectively. This work highlights that the band-edge engineering by molecular catalysts could be an important design consideration for semiconductor-catalyst hybrids toward PEC H2 production.

Full-Space Electric Field in Mo-Decorated Zn2In2S5 Polarization Photocatalyst for Oriented Charge Flow and Efficient Hydrogen Production

Integration of photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution with oxidative organic synthesis presents a highly attractive strategy for the simultaneous production of clean H2 fuel and high-value chemicals. However, the sluggish dynamics of photogenerated charge carriers across the photocatalysts result in low photoconversion efficiency, hindering the wide applications of such a technology. Herein, we overcome this limitation by inducing the full-space electric field via charge polarization engineering on a Mo cluster-decorated Zn2In2S5 (Mo-Zn2In2S5) photocatalyst. Specifically, this full-space electric field arises from a cascade of the bulk electric field (BEF) and local surface electric field (LSEF), triggering the oriented migration of photogenerated electrons from [Zn-S] regions to [In-S] regions and eventually to Mo cluster sites, ensuring efficient separation of bulk and surface charge carriers. Moreover, the surface Mo clusters induce a tip enhancement effect to optimize charge transfer behavior by augmenting electrons and proton concentration around the active sites on the basal plane of Zn2In2S5. Notably, the optimized Mo1.5-Zn2In2S5 catalyst achieves exceptional H2 and benzaldehyde production rates of 34.35 and 45.31 mmol gcat -1 h-1, respectively, outperforming pristine ZnIn2S4 by 3.83- and 4.15-fold. Abiotic Methane Production Driven by Ubiquitous Non-Fenton-Type Reactive Oxygen Species

Abiotic CH4 production driven by Fenton-type reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been confirmed to be an indispensable component of the atmospheric CH4 budget. While the chemical reactions independent of Fenton chemistry to ROS are ubiquitous in nature, it remains unknown whether the produced ROS can drive abiotic CH4 production. Here, we first demonstrated the abiotic CH4 production at the soil-water interface under illumination. Leveraging this finding, polymeric carbon nitrides (CNx) as a typical analogue of natural geobattery material and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a natural methyl donor were used to unravel the underlying mechanisms. We revealed that the ROS, photocatalytically produced by CNx, can oxidize DMSO into CH4 with a high selectivity of 91.5 %. Such an abiotic CH4 production process was further expanded to various non-Fenton-type reaction systems, such as electrocatalysis, pyrocatalysis and sonocatalysis. This work provides insights into the geochemical cycle of abiotic CH4, and offers a new route to CH4 production via integrated energy development.

Efficient Thermal Management with Selective Metamaterial Absorber for Boosting Photothermal CO2 Hydrogenation under Sunlight

Photothermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation is a prospective strategy to simultaneously reduce CO2 emission and generate value-added fuels. However, the demand of extremely intense light hinders its development in practical applications. Herein, this work reports the novel design of Ni-based selective metamaterial absorber and employs it as the photothermal catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation. The selective absorption property reduces the heat loss caused by radiation while possessing effectively solar absorption, thus substantially increasing local photothermal temperature. Notably, the enhancement of local electric field by plasmon resonance promotes the adsorption and activation of reactants. Moreover, benefiting from the ingenious morphology that Ni nanoparticles (NPs) are encapsulated by SiO2 matrix through co-sputtering, the greatly improved dispersion of Ni NPs enables enhancing the contact with reaction gas and preventing the agglomeration. Consequently, the catalyst exhibits an unprecedented CO2 conversion rate of 516.9 mmol gcat -1 h-1 under 0.8 W cm-2 irradiation, with near 90% CO selectivity and high stability. Significantly, this designed photothermal catalyst demonstrates the great potential in practical applications under sunlight. This work provides new sights for designing high-performance photothermal catalysts by thermal management.

Tm,Ho:YLF waveguide lasers at 2.05 µm

In this work, we report on the first, to our knowledge, 2.05-µm laser based on femtosecond-laser direct written (FsLDW) Tm,Ho:YLF cladding waveguides. A channel waveguide with a 90-µm diameter "fiber-like" low-index cladding is fabricated in a 6 at. % Tm3+, 0.4 at. % Ho3+:LiYF4 crystal by FsLDW. Pumped by Ti:sapphire laser at 795.1 nm, the fabricated waveguide supports efficient lasing oscillation at 2050 nm with a maximum output power of 47.5 mW, a minimum lasing threshold of 181 mW, and a slope efficiency of 20.1%. The impacts of cavity conditions and polarizations of the pump light on the obtained lasing performance are well studied. The experimental results obtained in this study demonstrate the great potential of utilizing Tm,Ho:YLF and FsLDW for the development of durable mid-infrared lasers featuring compact designs.

Highly Efficient and Selective Light-Driven Dry Reforming of Methane by a Carbon Exchange Mechanism

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a promising technique for converting greenhouse gases (namely, CH4 and CO2) into syngas. However, traditional thermocatalytic processes require high temperatures and suffer from low selectivity and coke-induced instability. Here, we report high-entropy alloys loaded on SrTiO3 as highly efficient and coke-resistant catalysts for light-driven DRM without a secondary source of heating. This process involves carbon exchange between reactants (i.e., CO2 and CH4) and oxygen exchange between CO2 and the lattice oxygen of supports, during which CO and H2 are gradually produced and released. Such a mechanism deeply suppresses the undesired side reactions such as reverse water-gas shift reaction and methane deep dissociation. Impressively, the optimized CoNiRuRhPd/SrTiO3 catalyst achieves ultrahigh activity (15.6/16.0 mol gmetal-1 h-1 for H2/CO production), long-term stability (∼150 h), and remarkable selectivity (∼0.96). This work opens a new avenue for future energy-efficient industrial applications.

Integration of photothermal water evaporation with photocatalytic microplastics upcycling via nanofluidic thermal management

Photothermal heating and photocatalytic treatment are two solar-driven water processing approaches by harnessing NIR and UV-vis light, respectively, which can fully utilize solar energy if integrated. However, it remains a challenge to achieve high performance in both approaches when integrated in a material due to uncontrollable heat diffusion. Here, we report a demonstration of heat confinement on photothermal sites and fluid cooling on photocatalysis sites at the nanoscale, within a well-designed heat and fluid confinement nanofiber reactor. Photothermal and photocatalytic nanostructures were alternatively aligned in electrospun nanofibers for on-demand nanofluidic thermal management as well as easy folding into 3D structures with enhanced light utilization and mass transfer. Such a design showed simultaneously high photothermal evaporation rate (2.59 kg m-2 h-1, exceeding the limit rate) and efficient photocatalytic upcycling of microplastics pollutant into valued products. Enabled by controlled photothermal heating, the valued main product (i.e., methyl acetate) can be evaporated out with 100% selectivity by in situ separation.

Solar-driven sugar production directly from CO2 via a customizable electrocatalytic-biocatalytic flow system

Conventional food production is restricted by energy conversion efficiency of natural photosynthesis and demand for natural resources. Solar-driven artificial food synthesis from CO2 provides an intriguing approach to overcome the limitations of natural photosynthesis while promoting carbon-neutral economy, however, it remains very challenging. Here, we report the design of a hybrid electrocatalytic-biocatalytic flow system, coupling photovoltaics-powered electrocatalysis (CO2 to formate) with five-enzyme cascade platform (formate to sugar) engineered via genetic mutation and bioinformatics, which achieves conversion of CO2 to C6 sugar (L-sorbose) with a solar-to-food energy conversion efficiency of 3.5%, outperforming natural photosynthesis by over three-fold. This flow system can in principle be programmed by coupling with diverse enzymes toward production of multifarious food from CO2. This work opens a promising avenue for artificial food synthesis from CO2 under confined environments.

Concentrated Formic Acid from CO2 Electrolysis for Directly Driving Fuel Cell

The production of formic acid via electrochemical CO2 reduction may serve as a key link for the carbon cycle in the formic acid economy, yet its practical feasibility is largely limited by the quantity and concentration of the product. Here we demonstrate continuous electrochemical CO2 reduction for formic acid production at 2 M at an industrial-level current densities (i.e., 200 mA cm-2 ) for 300 h on membrane electrode assembly using scalable lattice-distorted bismuth catalysts. The optimized catalysts also enable a Faradaic efficiency for formate of 94.2 % and a highest partial formate current density of 1.16 A cm-2 , reaching a production rate of 21.7 mmol cm-2  h-1 . To assess the practicality of this system, we perform a comprehensive techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment, showing that our approach can potentially substitute conventional methyl formate hydrolysis for industrial formic acid production. Furthermore, the resultant formic acid serves as direct fuel for air-breathing formic acid fuel cells, boasting a power density of 55 mW cm-2 and an exceptional thermal efficiency of 20.1 %.

Spectroscopic visualization of reversible hydrogen spillover between palladium and metal-organic frameworks toward catalytic semihydrogenation

Hydrogen spillover widely occurs in a variety of hydrogen-involved chemical and physical processes. Recently, metal-organic frameworks have been extensively explored for their integration with noble metals toward various hydrogen-related applications, however, the hydrogen spillover in metal/MOF composite structures remains largely elusive given the challenges of collecting direct evidence due to system complexity. Here we show an elaborate strategy of modular signal amplification to decouple the behavior of hydrogen spillover in each functional regime, enabling spectroscopic visualization for interfacial dynamic processes. Remarkably, we successfully depict a full picture for dynamic replenishment of surface hydrogen atoms under interfacial hydrogen spillover by quick-scanning extended X-ray absorption fine structure, in situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics calculation. With interfacial hydrogen spillover, Pd/ZIF-8 catalyst shows unique alkyne semihydrogenation activity and selectivity for alkynes molecules. The methodology demonstrated in this study also provides a basis for further exploration of interfacial species migration.

Distinguishment between high-grade gliomas and solitary brain metastases in peritumoural oedema: quantitative analysis using synthetic MRI at 3 T

AIM

To investigate the efficacy of synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in distinguishing high-grade gliomas (HGGs) from solitary brain metastases (SBMs) in peritumoural oedema.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Thirty-five patients with HGGs and 25 patients with SBMs were recruited and scanned using synthetic MRI using a 3 T scanner. Two radiologists measured synthetic MRI-derived relaxation values independently (T1, T2, proton density [PD]) in the peritumoural oedema, which was used to generate quantitative metrics before (T1native, T2native, and PDnative) and after (T1post, T2post, and PDpost) contrast agent injection. Student's t-test or the Mann-Whitney U-test was performed to detect statistically significant differences in the aforementioned metrics in peritumoural oedema between HGGs and SBMs. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to evaluate the efficacy of each metric in distinguishing the two groups, and the areas under the curves (AUCs) were compared pairwise by performing the Delong test.

RESULTS

The mean T1native, T2native, and T1post values in the peritumoural oedema of HGGs were significantly lower compared with SBMs (all p<0.05). The T1post value had a higher AUC (0.843) in differentiating HGGs and SBMs than all other individual metrics (all p<0.05). The combined T1native, T2native, and T1post model had the best distinguishing performance with an AUC, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.987, 94.3%, and 100%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Synthetic MRI may be a potential supplement to the preoperative diagnosis of HGGs and SBMs in clinical practice, as the synthetic MRI-derived tri-parametric model in the peritumoural oedema showed significantly improved diagnostic performance in distinguishing HGGs from SBMs.

2D/2D Heterojunction of BiOBr/BiOI Nanosheets for In Situ H2 O2 Production and Activation toward Efficient Photocatalytic Wastewater Treatment

The presence of toxic organic pollutants in aquatic environments poses significant threats to human health and global ecosystems. Photocatalysis that enables in situ production and activation of H2 O2 presents a promising approach for pollutant removal; however, the processes of H2 O2 production and activation potentially compete for active sites and charge carriers on the photocatalyst surface, leading to limited catalytic performance. Herein, a hierarchical 2D/2D heterojunction nanosphere composed of ultrathin BiOBr and BiOI nanosheets (BiOBr/BiOI) is developed by a one-pot microwave-assisted synthesis to achieve in situ H2 O2 production and activation for efficient photocatalytic wastewater treatment. Various experimental and characterization results reveal that the BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction facilitates efficient electron transfer from BiOBr to BiOI, enabling the one-step two-electron O2 reduction for H2 O2 production. Moreover, the ultrathin BiOI provides abundant active sites for H2 O2 adsorption, promoting in situ H2 O2 activation for •O2 - generation. As a result, the BiOBr/BiOI hybrid exhibits excellent activity for pollutant degradation with an apparent rate constant of 0.141 min-1 , which is 3.8 and 47.3 times that of pristine BiOBr and BiOI, respectively. This work expands the range of the materials suitable for in situ H2 O2 production and activation, paving the way toward sustainable environmental remediation using solar energy.

Tandem Synergistic Effect of Cu-In Dual Sites Confined on the Edge of Monolayer CuInP2 S6 toward Selective Photoreduction of CO2 into Multi-Carbon Solar Fuels

One-unit-cell, single-crystal, hexagonal CuInP2 S6 atomically thin sheets of≈0.81 nm in thickness was successfully synthesized for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 . Exciting ethene (C2 H4 ) as the main product was dominantly generated with the yield-based selectivity reaching ≈56.4 %, and the electron-based selectivity as high as ≈74.6 %. The tandem synergistic effect of charge-enriched Cu-In dual sites confined on the lateral edge of the CuInP2 S6 monolayer (ML) is mainly responsible for efficient conversion and high selectivity of the C2 H4 product as the basal surface site of the ML, exposing S atoms, can not derive the CO2 photoreduction due to the high energy barrier for the proton-coupled electron transfer of CO2 into *COOH. The marginal In site of the ML preeminently targets CO2 conversion to *CO under light illumination, and the *CO then migrates to the neighbor Cu sites for the subsequent C-C coupling reaction into C2 H4 with thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility. Moreover, ultrathin structure of the ML also allows to shorten the transfer distance of charge carriers from the interior onto the surface, thus inhibiting electron-hole recombination and enabling more electrons to survive and accumulate on the exposed active sites for CO2 reduction.

Long-term prognostic value of thyroid hormones in left ventricular noncompaction

PURPOSE

Thyroid function is closely related to the prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to explore the predictive value of thyroid hormones for adverse cardiovascular outcomes in left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC).

METHODS

This longitudinal cohort study enrolled 388 consecutive LVNC patients with complete thyroid function profiles and comprehensive cardiovascular assessment. Potential predictors for adverse outcomes were thoroughly evaluated.

RESULTS

Over a median follow-up of 5.22 years, primary outcome (the combination of cardiovascular mortality and heart transplantation) occurred in 98 (25.3%) patients. For secondary outcomes, 75 (19.3%) patients died and 130 (33.5%) patients experienced major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Multivariable Cox analysis identified that free triiodothyronine (FT3) was independently associated with both primary (HR 0.455, 95%CI 0.313-0.664) and secondary (HR 0.547, 95%CI 0.349-0.858; HR 0.663, 95%CI 0.475-0.925) outcomes. Restricted cubic spline analysis illustrated that the risk for adverse outcomes increased significantly with the decline of serum FT3. The LVNC cohort was further stratified according to tertiles of FT3 levels. Individuals with lower FT3 levels in the tertile 1 group suffered from severe cardiac dysfunction and remodeling, resulting in higher incidence of mortality and MACE (Log-rank P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that lower concentration of FT3 was linked to worse prognosis, particularly for patients with left atrial diameter ≥ 40 mm or left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 35%. Adding FT3 to the pre-existing risk score for MACE in LVNC improved its predictive performance.

CONCLUSION

Through the long-term investigation on a large LVNC cohort, we demonstrated that low FT3 level was an independent predictor for adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

A nonmetallic plasmonic catalyst for photothermal CO2 flow conversion with high activity, selectivity and durability

The meticulous design of active sites and light absorbers holds the key to the development of high-performance photothermal catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation. Here, we report a nonmetallic plasmonic catalyst of Mo2N/MoO2-x nanosheets by integrating a localized surface plasmon resonance effect with two distinct types of active sites for CO2 hydrogenation. Leveraging the synergism of dual active sites, H2 and CO2 molecules can be simultaneously adsorbed and activated on N atom and O vacancy, respectively. Meanwhile, the plasmonic effect of this noble-metal-free catalyst signifies its promising ability to convert photon energy into localized heat. Consequently, Mo2N/MoO2-x nanosheets exhibit remarkable photothermal catalytic performance in reverse water-gas shift reaction. Under continuous full-spectrum light irradiation (3 W·cm-2) for a duration of 168 h, the nanosheets achieve a CO yield rate of 355 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 in a flow reactor with a selectivity exceeding 99%. This work offers valuable insights into the precise design of noble-metal-free active sites and the development of plasmonic catalysts for reducing carbon footprints.

Sustainable all-weather CO2 utilization by mimicking natural photosynthesis in a single material

Solar-driven CO2 conversion into hydrocarbon fuels is a sustainable approach to synchronously alleviating the energy crisis and achieving net CO2 emissions. However, the dependence of the conversion process on solar illumination hinders its practical application due to the intermittent availability of sunlight at night and on cloudy or rainy days. Here, we report a model material of Pt-loaded hexagonal tungsten trioxide (Pt/h-WO3) for decoupling light and dark reaction processes, demonstrating the sustainable CO2 conversion under dark conditions for the first time. In such a material system, hydrogen atoms can be produced by photocatalytic water splitting under solar illumination, stored together with electrons in the h-WO3 through the transition of W6+ to W5+ and spontaneously released to trigger catalytic CO2 reduction under dark conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrate using natural light that CH4 production can persist at night and on rainy days, proving the accomplishment of all-weather CO2 conversion via a sustainable way.

Continuous Flow System for Highly Efficient and Durable Photocatalytic Oxidative Coupling of Methane

Photocatalytic oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) into value-added industrial chemicals offers an appealing green technique for achieving sustainable development, whereas it encounters double bottlenecks in relatively low methane conversion rate and severe overoxidation. Herein, we engineer a continuous gas flow system to achieve efficient photocatalytic OCM while suppressing overoxidation by synergizing the moderate active oxygen species, surface plasmon-mediated polarization, and multipoint gas intake flow reactor. Particularly, a remarkable CH4 conversion rate of 218.2 μmol h-1 with an excellent selectivity of ∼90% toward C2+ hydrocarbons and a remarkable stability over 240 h is achieved over a designed Au/TiO2 photocatalyst in our continuous gas flow system with a homemade three-dimensional (3D) printed flow reactor. This work provides an informative concept to engineer a high-performance flow system for photocatalytic OCM by synergizing the design of the reactor and photocatalyst to synchronously regulate the mass transfer, activation of reactants, and inhibition of overoxidation.

Engineering surface lattice hydroxyl groups toward highly efficient photocatalytic methane coupling

Nb3O7(OH) containing abundant surface lattice hydroxyl groups, combining with loaded Au nanoparticles as the cocatalyst, was employed as a photocatalyst enabling highly efficient photocatalytic CH4 coupling to C2H6 under mild conditions. In situ spectroscopy technique revealed that the surface lattice hydroxyl groups play a vital role in promoting the activation of CH4 to produce the methoxy intermediates, contributing to significantly enhanced catalytic performance for CH4 conversion.

Recent progress of heterogeneous catalysts for transfer hydrogenation under the background of carbon neutrality

Under the background of carbon neutrality, the direct conversion of greenhouse CO2 to high value added fuels and chemicals is becoming an important and promising technology. Among them, the generation of liquid C1 products (formic acid and methanol) has made great progress; nevertheless, it encounters the problem of how to use it efficiently to solve the overcapacity issue. In this review, we suggest that the catalytic transfer hydrogenation using formic acid and methanol as the hydrogen sources is a critical and potential route for the substitution for the fossil fuel-derived H2 to generate essential bulk and fine chemicals. We mainly focus on summarizing the recent progress of heterogeneous catalysts in such reactions, including thermal- and photo-catalytic processes. Finally, we also propose some challenges and opportunities for this development.

Highly Efficient Iron-Based Catalyst for Light-Driven Selective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes

Light-driven hydrogenation of nitro compounds to functionalized amines is of great importance yet a challenge for practical applications, which calls for the development of high-performance, nonprecious photocatalysts and efficient catalytic systems. Herein, we report a high-efficiency Fe3O4@TiO2 photocatalyst via a sol-gel and subsequent pyrolysis strategy, which exhibits desirable photothermal hydrogenation performance of nitro compounds to functionalized amines with the excellent selectivity of >90% exceeding those of the state-of-the-art heterogeneous photocatalysts. Our experimental results and theoretical calculations for the first time reveal that Fe3O4 is the major active phase, and the strong metal-support interaction between Fe3O4 and reducible TiO2 further leads to performance improvement, taking advantage of the enhanced photothermal effect and the improved adsorption for the reactant and hydrazine hydrate. Notably, a variety of halonitrobenzenes and pharmaceutical intermediates can be completely converted to functionalized amines with high selectivities, even in gram-scale reactions. This work provides a new insight into the rational design of nonprecious photo/thermo-catalysts for other catalytic reactions.

Positive association between circulating Caveolin-1 and microalbuminuria in overt diabetes mellitus in pregnancy

AIMS

Mounting evidence has shown that caveolin-1 plays a pathological role in the progression of albuminuria. Our study aimed to provide clinical evidence showing whether circulating caveolin-1 levels were associated with microalbuminuria (MAU) in women with overt diabetes mellitus in pregnancy (ODMIP).

METHODS

A total of 150 pregnant women were enrolled in different groups, including 40 women with ODMIP and MAU (ODMIP + MAU), 40 women with ODMIP, and 70 women without ODMIP (Non-ODMIP). Plasma caveolin-1 levels were determined by ELISA. The presence of caveolin-1 in the human umbilical vein vascular wall was evaluated by immunohistochemical and western blot analysis, respectively. Albumin transcytosis across endothelial cells was measured using an established nonradioactive in vitro approach.

RESULTS

Significantly increased levels of plasma caveolin-1 were detected in ODMIP + MAU women. The Pearson's correlation analysis revealed a positive correlation between plasma caveolin-1 levels and Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c %) as well as with MAU in the ODMIP + MAU group. Simultaneously, experimental knockdown or overexpression of caveolin-1 significantly decreased or increased the level of albumin transcytosis across both human and mouse glomerular endothelial cells (GECs), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Our data showed a positive association between plasma caveolin-1 levels and microalbuminuria in ODMIP + MAU.

Tunable Impedance of Cobalt Loaded Carbon for Wide-Range Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Impedance matching modulation of the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers toward broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is the ultimate aim in EMW attenuation applications. Here, a Joule heating strategy is reported for preparation of the Co-loaded carbon (Co/C) absorber with tunable impedance characteristics. Typically, the size of the Co can be regulated to range from single-atoms to clusters, and to nanocrystals. The varied sizes of the Co combined with different graphitization degrees of carbon can result in different relative input impedances and electromagnetic loss, leading to the tunable EMW absorption properties of the Co/C absorber. By meticulously coalescing the different prepared Co/C, the working frequency can be easily tuned, covering Ku , X, and C bands. Furthermore, the Co/C demonstrates a high EMW attenuation due to its unique dielectric loss capability and magnetic loss characteristics. The abundant interfaces of Co/C can also contribute to the enhanced interfacial polarization for improving EMW attenuation. This work demonstrates the importance of optimizing the metal and carbon interaction to the impedance matching toward wide EAB of the EMW absorbers.

Pyrolysis-free synthesis of a high-loading single-atom Cu catalyst for efficient electrocatalytic CO2-to-CH4 conversion

Electrocatalytic CO2-to-CH4 conversion provides a promising means of addressing current carbon resource recycling and intermittent energy storage. Cu-based single-atom catalysts have attracted extensive attention owing to their high intrinsic activity toward CH4 production; however, they suffer from uncontrollable metal loading and aggregation during the conventional pyrolysis process of carbon-based substrates. Herein, we developed a pyrolysis-free method to prepare a single-atom Cu catalyst anchored on a formamide polymer substrate with a high loading amount and well atomic dispersion through a mild polycondensation reaction. Owing to the isolation of copper active sites, efficient CO2-to-CH4 conversion is achieved over the single-atom Cu catalyst, along with the significant suppression of C-C coupling. As a result, the optimal single-atom catalyst with 5.87 wt% of Cu offers high CH4 faradaic efficiencies (FEs) of over 70% in a wide current density range from 100 to 600 mA cm-2 in the flow cell, together with a maximum CH4 partial current density of 415.8 mA cm-2. Moreover, the CH4 FE can reach 74.2% under optimized conditions in a membrane electrode assembly electrolyzer. This work provides new insights into the subtle design of highly efficient electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction.

Intramedullary nail fixation of fibular fractures in combination with extra-articular distal tibial fractures (AO/OTA 43A): a single-center retrospective study

Treatment of fibular fractures associated with extra-articular distal tibia fractures is technically challenging and the purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of intramedullary nail fixation of fibular fractures when associated with this fracture. Between January 2018 and December 2021, 33 patients presenting extra-articular distal tibia fractures and fibular fractures (AO/OTA 43A) were treated. Clinical and radiological data were collected during routine postoperative follow-ups. Thirty-one patients were monitored for a period of time ranging from 12 to 23 months, with an average follow-up of 17.5 ± 3.3 months. Fibular bone union took an average of 3.6 ± 0.9 months. At the last follow-up, the average fibular alignment and postoperative ankle talocrural angles were 1.8° and 9.1°, respectively. No detectable radiographic rotational malalignment and serious complications related to the fibular incision was observed. The average AOFAS and OMAS scores at the most recent follow-up were 88.3 ± 6.2 and 87.4 ± 6.0, respectively. Intramedullary nail fixation worked well to keep the fibula in place in fibular fractures connected to extra-articular distal tibia fractures.

Enabling direct-growth route for highly efficient ethanol upgrading to long-chain alcohols in aqueous phase

Upgrading ethanol to long-chain alcohols (LAS, C6+OH) offers an attractive and sustainable approach to carbon neutrality. Yet it remains a grand challenge to achieve efficient carbon chain propagation, particularly with noble metal-free catalysts in aqueous phase, toward LAS production. Here we report an unconventional but effective strategy for designing highly efficient catalysts for ethanol upgrading to LAS, in which Ni catalytic sites are controllably exposed on surface through sulfur modification. The optimal catalyst exhibits the performance well exceeding previous reports, achieving ultrahigh LAS selectivity (15.2% C6OH and 59.0% C8+OH) at nearly complete ethanol conversion (99.1%). Our in situ characterizations, together with theoretical simulation, reveal that the selectively exposed Ni sites which offer strong adsorption for aldehydes but are inert for side reactions can effectively stabilize and enrich aldehyde intermediates, dramatically improving direct-growth probability toward LAS production. This work opens a new paradigm for designing high-performance non-noble metal catalysts for upgrading aqueous EtOH to LAS.

Ag+ -Doped InSe Nanosheets for Membrane Electrode Assembly Electrolyzer toward Large-Current Electroreduction of CO2 to Ethanol

It is an appealing approach to CO2 utilization through CO2 electroreduction (CO2 ER) to ethanol at high current density; however, the commonly used Cu-based catalysts cannot sustain large current during CO2 ER despite their capability for ethanol production. Herein, we report that Ag+ -doped InSe nanosheets with Se vacancies can address this grand challenge in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzer. As revealed by our experimental characterization and theoretical calculation, the Ag+ doping, which can tailor the electronic structure of InSe while diversifying catalytically active sites, enables the formation of key reaction intermediates and their sequential evolution into ethanol. More importantly, such a material can well work for large-current conditions in MEA electrolyzers with In2+ species stabilized via electron transfer from Ag to Se. Remarkably, in an MEA electrolyzer by coupling cathodic CO2 ER with anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the optimal catalyst exhibits an ethanol Faradaic efficiency of 68.7 % and a partial current density of 186.6 mA cm-2 on the cathode with a full-cell ethanol energy efficiency of 26.1 % at 3.0 V. This work opens an avenue for large-current production of ethanol from CO2 with high selectivity and energy efficiency by rationally designing electrocatalysts.

Integration of MnO2 Nanosheets with Pd Nanoparticles for Efficient CO2 Electroreduction to Methanol in Membrane Electrode Assembly Electrolyzers

It remains a challenge to design a catalyst with high selectivity at a large current density toward CO2 electrocatalytic reduction (CO2ER) to a single C1 liquid product of methanol. Here, we report the design of a catalyst by integrating MnO2 nanosheets with Pd nanoparticles to address this challenge, which can be implemented in membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzers for the conversion of CO2ER to methanol. Such a strategy modifies the electronic structure of the catalyst and provides additional active sites, favoring the formation of key reaction intermediates and their successive evolution into methanol. The optimal catalyst delivers a Faradaic efficiency of 77.6 ± 1.3% and a partial current density of 250.8 ± 4.3 mA cm-2 for methanol during CO2ER in an MEA electrolyzer by coupling anodic oxygen evolution reaction with a full-cell energy efficiency achieving 29.1 ± 1.2% at 3.2 V. This work opens a new avenue to the control of C1 intermediates for CO2ER to methanol with high selectivity and activity in an MEA electrolyzer.

Collision in double-image encryption scheme based on spatial encoding and phase-truncation Fourier transforms

In this paper, the security strength of a double-image cryptosystem using spatial encoding and phase-truncation Fourier transforms (PTFTs) is evaluated. Unlike the conventional PTFT-based cryptosystem, where two random phase masks (RPMs) are used as public keys to provide enough phase constrains in the estimation, in the improved cryptosystem, the RPM generated by a random amplitude mask (RAM) is treated as an unknown parameter. Due to this fixed RAM, the number of constraints in the estimation decreases to achieve high robustness against potential iterative attacks. Moreover, instead of two phase-only masks (POMs), here the two POMs and the RAM are utilized as the private keys in the improved cryptosystem; thus, the key space of the double-image cryptosystem has been enlarged. However, we noticed that the RAM used to encode plaintexts spatially and to generate the phase encryption key is independent of the plaintexts. This could be recovered by a known pair of plaintexts and the ciphertext. Once the information of the RAM is retrieved, the phase key RPM can also be produced making the cryptosystem vulnerable. Based on this finding, new hybrid algorithms, including a known-plaintext attack and a known key attack are proposed to crack the enhanced PTFT-based cryptosystem. The information of the plaintexts can be retrieved from one POM using the proposed algorithms without any knowledge of another POM and the corresponding ciphertext. Numerical simulations have been carried out to validate the information disclosure problem still exists in the double-image cryptosystem based on spatial encoding and PTFTs.

Artificial photosynthetic cells with biotic-abiotic hybrid energy modules for customized CO2 conversion

Programmable artificial photosynthetic cell is the ultimate goal for mimicking natural photosynthesis, offering tunable product selectivity via reductase selection toward device integration. However, this concept is limited by the capacity of regenerating the multiple cofactors that hold the key to various reductases. Here, we report the design of artificial photosynthetic cells using biotic-abiotic thylakoid-CdTe as hybrid energy modules. The rational integration of thylakoid with CdTe quantum dots substantially enhances the regeneration of bioactive NADPH, NADH and ATP cofactors without external supplements by promoting proton-coupled electron transfer. Particularly, this approach turns thylakoid highly active for NADH regeneration, providing a more versatile platform for programming artificial photosynthetic cells. Such artificial photosynthetic cells can be programmed by coupling with diverse reductases, such as formate dehydrogenase and remodeled nitrogenase for highly selective production of formate or methane, respectively. This work opens an avenue for customizing artificial photosynthetic cells toward multifarious demands for CO2 conversion.

Computational Design and Experimental Validation of Enzyme Mimicking Cu-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Reduction of CO2 into C2 Products: C-C Coupling Promoted by Ligand Modulation and the Optimal Cu-Cu Distance

While extensive research has been conducted on the conversion of CO2 to C1 products, the synthesis of C2 products still strongly depends on the Cu electrode. One main issue hindering the C2 production on Cu-based catalysts is the lack of an appropriate Cu-Cu distance to provide the ideal platform for the C-C coupling process. Herein, we identify a lab-synthesized artificial enzyme with an optimal Cu-Cu distance, named MIL-53 (Cu) (MIL= Materials of Institute Lavoisier), for CO2 conversion by using a density functional theory method. By substituting the ligands in the porous MIL-53 (Cu) nanozyme with functional groups from electron-donating NH2 to electron-withdrawing NO2, the Cu-Cu distance and charge of Cu can be significantly tuned, thus modulating the adsorption strength of CO2 that impacts the catalytic activity. MIL-53 (Cu) decorated with a COOH-ligand is found to be located at the top of a volcano-shaped plot and exhibits the highest activity and selectivity to reduce CO2 to CH3CH2OH with a limiting potential of only 0.47 eV. In addition, experiments were carried out to successfully synthesize COOH-decorated MIL-53(Cu) to prove its high catalytic performance for C2 production, which resulted in a -55.5% faradic efficiency at -1.19 V vs RHE, which is much higher than the faradic efficiency of the benchmark Cu electrode of 35.7% at -1.05 V vs RHE. Our results demonstrate that the biologically inspired enzyme engineering approach can redefine the structure-activity relationships of nanozyme catalysts and can also provide a new understanding of the catalytic mechanisms in natural enzymes toward the development of highly active and selective artificial nanozymes.

Integration of Single-Atom Catalyst with Z-Scheme Heterojunction for Cascade Charge Transfer Enabling Highly Efficient Piezo-Photocatalysis

Piezo-assisted photocatalysis (namely, piezo-photocatalysis), which utilizes mechanical energy to modulate spatial and energy distribution of photogenerated charge carriers, presents a promising strategy for molecule activation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation toward applications such as environmental remediation. However, similarly to photocatalysis, piezo-photocatalysis also suffers from inferior charge separation and utilization efficiency. Herein, a Z-scheme heterojunction composed of single Ag atoms-anchored polymeric carbon nitride (Ag-PCN) and SnO2- x is developed for efficient charge carrier transfer/separation both within the catalyst and between the catalyst and surface oxygen molecules (O2 ). As revealed by charge dynamics analysis and theoretical simulations, the synergy between the single Ag atoms and the Z-scheme heterojunction initiates a cascade electron transfer from SnO2- x to Ag-PCN and then to O2 adsorbed on Ag. With ultrasound irradiation, the polarization field generated within the piezoelectric hybrid further accelerates charge transfer and regulates the O2 activation pathway. As a result, the Ag-PCN/SnO2- x catalyst efficiently activates O2 into ·O2 - , ·OH, and H2 O2 under co-excitation of visible light and ultrasound, which are consequently utilized to trigger aerobic degradation of refractory antibiotic pollutants. This work provides a promising strategy to maneuver charge transfer dynamics for efficient piezo-photocatalysis by integrating single-atom catalysts (SACs) with Z-scheme heterojunction.

Rational Design of N-Doped Carbon-Coated Cobalt Nanoparticles for Highly Efficient and Durable Photothermal CO2 Conversion

Photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to high-value-added chemicals and fuels is an appealing approach to alleviate energy and environmental concerns. However, it still relies on the development of earth-abundant, efficient, and durable catalysts. Here, the design of N-doped carbon-coated Co nanoparticles (NPs), as a photothermal catalyst, synthesized through a two-step pyrolysis of Co-based ZIF-67 precursor, is reported. Consequently, the catalyst exhibits remarkable activity and stability for photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to CO with a 0.75 mol gcat -1 h-1 CO production rate under the full spectrum of light illumination. The high activity and durability of these Co NPs are mainly attributed to the synergy of the attuned size of Co NPs, the thickness of carbon layers, and the N doping species. Impressively, the experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations show that such a simple N-doped carbon coating strategy can effectively facilitate the desorption of generated CO and activation of reactants due to the strong photothermal effect. This work provides a simple and efficient route for the preparation of highly active and durable nonprecious metal catalysts for promising photothermal catalytic reactions.

[A close contact of coronavirus disease 2019 with severe imported malaria: a case report]

This article presents a severe cerebral malaria patient in shock with a close contact of COVID-19 that was successfully cured in a negative pressure ward during the global pandemic of COVID-19. The patient experienced a sudden onset of high fever and coma in a designated isolation hotel after returning from Africa, and was transferred to a designated hospital. Following antimalarial therapy, blood pressure elevation, increase of blood volume, bedside hemodialysis, mechanical ventilation, plasma and platelet transfusions, the case gradual recovered.

Nd:YSAG waveguide-grating vortex laser: design and implementation

In this work, we fabricate a hybrid waveguide-grating vortex laser in Nd:YSAG by using femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW). The detailed parameters of the hybrid structure are fixed by optical simulation. In experiments, an efficient vortex beam is produced in the passive operation at 1064 nm. Under optical pumping at 808 nm, a dual-wavelength waveguide laser at 1060/1062 nm as well as a waveguide-grating vortex laser at 1060 nm are obtained. The laser performance and diffraction properties of the generated vortex laser are detailed, studied, and discussed, providing meaningful reference results toward the practical applications of FsLDW and waveguide-grating structures in integrated photonics.

[A randomized controlled study on the long-term efficacy of intra-cervical lymphatic immunotherapy for adult allergic rhinitis]

Objective: To determine the long-term efficacy and safety of intra-cervical lymphatic immunotherapy (ICLIT) for adult allergic rhinitis (AR) by comparing it with subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT). Methods: A total of 100 adult AR patients with dust mite allergy in Department of Otorhinolaryngology, First People's Hospital of Foshan from Feb 2018 to Dec 2019 were randomly divided into two groups, 50 in SCIT group [including 42 males and 8 females, aging (32.55±9.72) years] and 50 in ICLIT group [including 45 males and 5 females, aging (31.33±9.84) years]. The changes in total symptom score (total system score, TSS), nasal symptom score (total nasal symptom score, TNSS), eye symptom score (total ocular scoring system, TOSS), drug score (total medication score, TMS), and quality of life score of the two groups of patients were evaluated before and after treatment, and the adverse reactions of all patients during the treatment period were recorded. The changes in the level of dust mite specific IgE (sIgE) in the serum were evaluated. GraphPad Prism 9.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: In the SCIT group, 38 patients completed treatment and follow-up, with a dropout rate of 24%. In the ICLIT group, 48 patients completed treatment and follow-up, with a dropout rate of only 4%. The scores of TSS, TNSS, TOSS, TMS, and quality of life in the ICLIT group before treatment were 32.1±3.0, 27.3±3.1, 4.8±2.8, 2.3±0.9, and 68.1±28.7, respectively; After 36 months of treatment, the scores were 21.8±11.4, 18.1±9.4, 3.7±2.9, 1.3±1.1, and 36.0±26.7, respectively, which were significantly lower than those before treatment (all P<0.001). After 36 months of treatment, the TSS of the ICLIT group improved by 10.3±11.2 compared to before, while the TSS of the SCIT group improved significantly by 21.9±11.0 compared to before, with statistically significant differences between the groups (P<0.001). No serious systemic adverse reactions occurred in both groups of patients. Conclusions: ICLIT treatment for adult AR has long-term efficacy, high safety, and high compliance, but its long-term efficacy is not as good as SCIT. ICLIT can be considered as a new complementary option for AR immunotherapy.

Dopant Site Engineering on 2D Co3O4 Enables Enhanced Toluene Oxidation in a Wide Temperature Range

Development of cost-effective oxide catalysts holds the key to the removal of toluene, one of the most important volatile organic compounds. However, the catalysts follow varied working mechanisms at different reaction temperatures, posing a challenge to achieving efficient toluene removal over a wide temperature range. Here we report an agitation-assisted molten salt method, which achieves the rational doping on a two-dimensional Co3O4 catalyst and forms two different structures of active sites to enhance catalytic oxidation of toluene in specific temperature intervals, enabling a facile tandem design for working in a wide temperature range. Specifically, Co3O4 is doped with Cu at the octahedral site (Cu-Co3O4) and Zn at the tetrahedral site (Zn-Co3O4) to form CuOh-O-CoTe and ZnTe-O-CoOh structures on the surface, respectively. Mechanistic studies reveal the different working mechanisms of these two active sites toward remarkable performance enhancement at specific temperature intervals, and the improved performance derived from accelerated consumption of intermediates adsorbed on the catalyst surface. Taken together, Cu-Co3O4 and Zn-Co3O4 achieve excellent toluene purification performance over a wide temperature range. This work provides insights into the mechanism-oriented design of active sites at the atomic level.

Mimicking reductive dehalogenases for efficient electrocatalytic water dechlorination

Electrochemical technology is a robust approach to removing toxic and persistent chlorinated organic pollutants from water; however, it remains a challenge to design electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity as elaborately as natural reductive dehalogenases. Here we report the design of high-performance electrocatalysts toward water dechlorination by mimicking the binding pocket configuration and catalytic center of reductive dehalogenases. Specifically, our designed electrocatalyst is an assembled heterostructure by sandwiching a molecular catalyst into the interlayers of two-dimensional graphene oxide. The electrocatalyst exhibits excellent dechlorination performance, which enhances reduction of intermediate dichloroacetic acid by 7.8 folds against that without sandwich configuration and can selectively generate monochloro-groups from trichloro-groups. Molecular simulations suggest that the sandwiched inner space plays an essential role in tuning solvation shell, altering protonation state and facilitating carbon-chlorine bond cleavage. This work demonstrates the concept of mimicking natural reductive dehalogenases toward the sustainable treatment of organohalogen-contaminated water and wastewater.

Hybrid plaintext attack for a cryptosystem based on interference and the phase-retrieval technique

In this paper, the security strength of an enhanced cryptosystem based on interference and the phase-retrieval technique is evaluated. The security strength of the optical cryptosystem was improved through the phase-retrieval technique used to generate a phase-only mask (POM) as the ciphertext. Due to the complex mathematical model of the phase-retrieval technique, it seems that a silhouette problem existing in the conventional interference-based scheme was removed. However, we noted that the random phase mask (RPM) regarded as the only private key was fixed in the encryption path, which is not related to the plaintext and makes it possible to be recovered using a known-plaintext attack (KPA). Moreover, we also found that the RPM has high key sensitivity, and it should be recovered precisely to retrieve information of plaintexts during the attack. Thus, a hybrid KPA where three pairs of known plaintexts and their ciphertexts are regarded as the amplitude and phase constraints to obtain the precise estimation of the RPM is proposed. Then, with the help of the estimated private key, information of the original plaintexts encoded using the cryptosystem under study could be retrieved from an arbitrarily given ciphertext without any knowledge of the private key. Our cryptoanalysis shows that the cryptosystem based on interference and the phase-retrieval technique is vulnerable to the proposed attack, and there is a security leak in it. Numerical simulations have been carried out to demonstrate the performance of our proposed attack.

Light-driven flow synthesis of acetic acid from methane with chemical looping

Oxidative carbonylation of methane is an appealing approach to the synthesis of acetic acid but is limited by the demand for additional reagents. Here, we report a direct synthesis of CH₃COOH solely from CH₄ via photochemical conversion without additional reagents. This is made possible through the construction of the PdO/Pd-WO₃ heterointerface nanocomposite containing active sites for CH₄ activation and C-C coupling. In situ characterizations reveal that CH₄ is dissociated into methyl groups on Pd sites while oxygen from PdO is the responsible for carbonyl formation. The cascade reaction between the methyl and carbonyl groups generates an acetyl precursor which is subsequently converted to CH₃COOH. Remarkably, a production rate of 1.5 mmol g_Pd^-1 h^-1 and selectivity of 91.6% toward CH₃COOH is achieved in a photochemical flow reactor. This work provides insights into intermediate control via material design, and opens an avenue to conversion of CH₄ to oxygenates.

FoxO1/NLRP3 Inflammasome Promotes Age-Related Alveolar Bone Resorption

Periodontitis is the utmost common chronic oral disease that exhibits intense susceptibility to aging. Aging is characterized by persistent sterile low-grade inflammation, leading to age-related periodontal complications represented by alveolar bone loss. Currently, forkhead transcription factor O1 (FoxO1) is generally believed to have a significant role in body development, senescence, cell viability, and oxidative stress in numerous organs and cells. However, the role of this transcription factor in mediating age-related alveolar bone resorption has not been examined. In this study, FoxO1 deficiency was discovered to have a beneficial correlation with halting the progression of alveolar bone resorption in aged mice. To further investigate the function of FoxO1 in age-related alveolar bone resorption, osteoblastic-specific FoxO1 knockout mice were generated, leading to an amelioration in alveolar bone loss compared to aged-matched wild-type mice, manifested as enhanced osteogenic potential. Mechanistically, we identified enhancement of the NLRP3 inflammasome signaling in FoxO1-deficient osteoblasts in the high dose of reactive oxygen species. Concordant with our study, MCC950, a specific inhibitor of NLRP3 inflammasome, greatly rescued osteoblast differentiation under oxidative stress. Our data shed light on the manifestations of FoxO1 depletion in osteoblasts and propose a possible mechanism for the therapy of age-related alveolar bone loss.

[Optimization of the medium and fermentation condition for the Penicillium aurantiocandidum Z12 strain with molluscicidal actions against Oncomelania hupensis]

OBJECTIVE

To optimize the culture and fermentation conditions of the Penicillium aurantiocandidum Z12 strain, a fungal strain with molluscicidal actions against Oncomelania hupensis, so as to provide the basis for the research and development of molluscicidal active substances from the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain and its fermentation broth and large-scale fermentation.

METHODS

The carbon source, nitrogen source and mineral salts were identified in the optimal culture medium for the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain with a single-factor experiment to determine the best fermentation condition for the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain. Factors that significantly affected the growth of the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain were identified using the Plackett-Burman design, and the best range of each factor was determined using the steepest climb test. Response surface analyses of temperature, pH value, seeding amount and liquid-filling quantity were performed using the Box-Behnken design to create a regression model for fermentation of the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain to identify the optimal culture medium.

RESULTS

Single-factor experiment preliminarily identified the best culture medium and conditions for the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain as follows: sucrose as the carbon source at approximately 20 g/L, tryptone as the nitrogen source at approximately 5 g/L, K₂HPO₄ as the mineral salt at approximately 5 g/L, initial pH at approximately 8, temperature at approximately 28 °C, seeding amount at approximately 6%, and liquid-filling quantity at approximately 50 mL/100 mL. Plackett-Burman design showed that factors that significantly affected the growth of the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain included temperature (t = -5.28, P < 0.05), seeding amount (t = 5.22, P < 0.05), pH (t = -4.30, P < 0.05) and liquid-filling quantity (t = -4.39, P < 0.05). Steepest climb test showed the highest mycelial growth at pH of 7.5, seeding amount of 8%, and liquid-filling quantity of 40 mL/100 mL, and this condition was selected as the central point of response surface analysis for the subsequent optimization of fermentation conditions. Response surface analyses using the Box-Behnken design showed that the optimal conditions for fermentation of the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain included sucrose at 15 g/L, tryptone at 5 g/L, K₂HPO₄ at 5 g/L, temperature at 28.2 °C, pH at 7.5, seeding amount at 10%, and liquid-filling quantity at 35.8 mL/100.0 mL, resulting in 0.132 g yield of the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain.

CONCLUSIONS

The optimal culture condition for the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain has been identified, and the optimized culture medium and fermentation condition may effectively improve the fermentation yield of the P. aurantiocandidum Z12 strain.

Glutamatergic neurons and GABAergic neurons of medial prefrontal cortex control hoarding-like behavior

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a chronic disease that begins early in life and does not remission unless timely treated. A large number of factors affect the presentation of HD symptoms, including a strong possessive psychology of objects and neurocognitive functioning. However, the underlying neural mechanisms of the excessive hoarding behavior in HD are still unknown. Using viral infections and brain slice electrophysiology recordings, we found that increased glutamatergic neuronal activity and decreased GABAergic neuronal activity in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) accelerated the hoarding-like behavior in mice. Respectively, chemogenetic manipulation to reduce glutamatergic neuronal activity or enhance GABAergic neuronal activity could improve the hoarding-like behavioral response. These results reveal a critical role played by alterations in the activity of specific types of neurons in hoarding-like behavior, and that targeted therapies for HD may be possible by precisely modulating these types of neurons.

Hierarchical triphase diffusion photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical gas/liquid flow conversion

Photoelectrochemical device is a versatile platform for achieving various chemical transformations with solar energy. However, a grand challenge, originating from mass and electron transfer of triphase-reagents/products in gas phase, water/electrolyte/products in liquid phase and catalyst/photoelectrode in solid phase, largely limits its practical application. Here, we report the simulation-guided development of hierarchical triphase diffusion photoelectrodes, to improve mass transfer and ensure electron transfer for photoelectrochemical gas/liquid flow conversion. Semiconductor nanocrystals are controllably integrated within electrospun nanofiber-derived mat, overcoming inherent brittleness of semiconductors. The mechanically strong skeleton of free-standing mat, together with satisfactory photon absorption, electrical conductivity and hierarchical pores, enables the design of triphase diffusion photoelectrodes. Such a design allows photoelectrochemical gas/liquid conversion to be performed continuously in a flow cell. As a proof of concept, 16.6- and 4.0-fold enhancements are achieved for the production rate and product selectivity of methane conversion, respectively, with remarkable durability.

[Thoracic SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumor-pathological diagnosis and combined immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment]

We explored clinicopathological features and treatment strategies for thoracic SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumor (SMARCA4-UT). Thoracic SMARCA4-UT is a new entity recently acknowledged in the 2021 edition of World Health Organization Classification of Thoracic Tumors, and doctors are relatively unfamiliar with its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Taking a case of SMARCA4-UT treated in Peking University First Hospital as an example, this multi-disciplinary discussion covered several hot issues on diagnosing and treating thoracic SMARCA4-UT, including histological features, immu- nohistochemical and molecular phenotype, immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy, and pathological assessment of neoadjuvant therapy response. The patient was an older man with a long history of smoking and was admitted due to a rapidly progressing solid tumor in the lower lobe of the right lung. Histologically, tumor cells were epithelioid, undifferentiated, diffusely positive for CD34, and partially positive for SALL4.The expression of BRG1 protein encoded by SMARCA4 gene was lost in all of tumor cells, and next-generation sequencing(NGS)confirmed SMARCA4 gene mutation (c.2196T>G, p.Y732Ter). The pathological diagnosis reached as thoracic SMARCA4-UT, and the preoperative TNM stage was T1N2M0 (ⅢA). Tumor proportion score (TPS) detected by immunohistochemistry of programmed cell death 1-ligand 1 (PD-L1, clone SP263) was 2%. Tumor mutation burden (TMB) detected by NGS of 1 021 genes was 16. 3/Mb. Microsatellite detection showed the tumor was microsatellite stable (MSS). Neo-adjuvant therapy was implemented with the combined regimen of chemotherapy and ICI. Right lower lobectomy was performed through thoracoscopy after the two weeks' neoadjuvant. The pathologic assessment of lung tumor specimens after neoadjuvant therapy revealed a complete pathological response (CPR). The post-neoadjuvant tumor TNM stage was ypT0N0M0. Then, five cycles of adjuvant therapy were completed. Until October 2022, neither tumor recurrence nor metastasis was detected, and minimal residual disease (MRD) detection was negative. At present, it is believed that if BRG1 immunohistochemical staining is negative, regardless of whether SMARCA4 gene mutation is detected, it should be classified as SMARCA4-deficient tumors. SMARCA4-deficient tumors include a variety of carcinomas and sarcomas. The essential criteria for diagnosing SMARCA4-UT includes loss of BRG1 expression, speci-fic histological morphology, and exclude other common thoracic malignant tumors with SMARCA4-deficiency, such as squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma. SMARCA4-UT is a very aggressive malignant tumor with a poor prognosis. It has almost no targeted therapy mutations, and little response to chemotherapy, but ICI is currently the only effective drug. The successful diagnosis and treatment for this case of SMARCA4-UT should enlighten significance for various kinds of SMARCA4-deficient tumors.

[Solid placental transmogrification of the lung: A case report and literature review]

Placental transmogrification of the lung (PTL) is a very rare benign lung lesion. There are only about 40 cases reported in the literature. The imaging and histological features of PTL cases in the publication are various, most of which are cystic and a few of which are solid. Being extremely rare, the solid PTL is unknown to major pathologists and surgeons. We reported a case of solid PTL in the anterior mediastinum. The patient was a 52-year-old male with no history of smoking and without symptoms. During physical examination, chest CT revealed a circular low-density lesion with a maximum diameter of 2.9 cm beside the spine in the posterior basal segment of the left lower lobe of the lung. The wedge resection was performed by video-assisted thoracoscopy. Grossly, a round nodule was located underneath the visceral pleura. It was about 3.0 cm×3.0 cm×1.6 cm and the cut surface was grey-red, soft and spongy. Microscopically, the nodule was constituted of papillare, which resembled placental villi at low magnification. The axis of papillae was edema, in which some mild round cells with clear cytoplasm and CD10 positive staining aggregated and transitioned to immature adipocytes and amorphous pink materials deposited with a few of inflammatory cells infiltration. The surface of papillae was covered with disconti-nuous alveolar epithelium. Combined with the typical morphology and immunohistochemical characteristics of CD10 positive, the diagnosis was PTL. The patient was followed up for 1 year without recurrence and discomfort. So far, the pathogenesis of PTL is unclear. The major hypotheses include hamartoma, variant of emphysema and clonal hyperplasia of stromal cells. Based on the study of our case and publication, we speculate that the hyperplasia of stromal cells located in the alveolar septa might be the first step to form the solid PTL. With the progression of the disease, a typical unilateral cystic nodule develops as a result of secondary cystic degeneration due to the occlusive valve effect. Surgery is the only option for diagnosis and treatment of PTL. The clinician should make an individualized operation plan according to the clinical manifestations, location and scope of the lesion, and preserve the surrounding normal lung tissue as much as possible while completely removing the lesion. There is a favorable prognosis.

[Evaluation of accuracy of pathological diagnosis based on thyroid core needle biopsy]

OBJECTIVE

To explore the protocol for diagnosing thyroid nodules based on core needle biopsy (CNB) and study the biomarkers' application in distinguishing indeterminate samples.

METHODS

Patients with thyroid nodules treated at Peking University First Hospital from 2015 to 2020 were reviewed. In the study, 598 cases with CNB and matched resected specimens were retrieved. According to "diagnostic categories of thyroid CNB" proposed by the Korean Endocrine Pathology Thyroid Core Needle Biopsy Study Group, the CNB samples were diagnosed as follows: Ⅰ, unsatisfactory; Ⅱ, benign; Ⅲ, indeterminate; Ⅳ, follicular neoplasm; Ⅴ, suspicious for malignancy; and Ⅵ, malignant. The samples of CNB Ⅲ were stained by immunohistochemistry (IHC) using antibodies against CK19, Galectin-3, HBME-1, and CD56, and detected by next-generation sequencing (NGS) using an OncoAim^® thyroid cancer multigene assay kit (Singlera Genomics) that detected 26 genes. Taking the resected specimens' classification as the gold standard, the predictive value of CNB for determining the malignancy of thyroid nodules and the biomarkers for distinguishing the samples of CNB Ⅲ was calculated.

RESULTS

The study included 598 patients, of which none were CNB Ⅰ, 40 cases were CNB Ⅱ, 40 cases were CNB Ⅲ, 32 cases were CNB Ⅳ, 35 cases were CNB Ⅴ, and 451 cases were CNB Ⅵ. The predictive value of CNB Ⅳ for determining follicular neoplasm was sensitivity (Sen) 100.00% and specificity (Sep) 100.00%, CNB Ⅴ-Ⅵ for determining malignancy was Sen 94.55% and Sep 100.00%, CNB Ⅱ for determining benign lesions was Sen 75.00% and Sep 99.80%. The predictive value of biomarkers for determining malignancy in cases of CNB Ⅲ was Sen 96.30% and Sep 92.31% by NGS, and Sen 81.48% and Sep 92.30% by IHC.

CONCLUSION

The Korean "diagnostic categories of thyroid CNB", which considers the histological specificity of CNB samples and the habits of clinicians, have strong operability, high diagnosis rate, and high clinical value. Under this framework, the cases of CNB Ⅵ should be treated with surgical operation, the cases of CNB Ⅴ-Ⅵ are recommended to be treated as malignant neoplasms, and the major cases of CNB Ⅱ could be followed up without worrisome except the one considered malignant by ultrasound. The value of biomarkers in distinguishing the cases of CNB Ⅲ is significant.

[Consistency comparison of programmed cell death 1-ligand 1 in different immuno-histochemical staining methods]

OBJECTIVE

To compare the consistency of programmed cell death 1-ligand 1 (PD-L1, clone E1L3N, 22C3, SP263) in different immunohistochemical staining methods.

METHODS

The first step was to select the optimal process: The PD-L1(clone E1L3N) antibody recommended process, self-built process ①, self-built process ② and self-built process ③ were used to perform immunohistochemical staining in 5 cases of tonsil tissue. The quality of all slides was scored by expert pathologists (0-6 points). The process with the highest score was selected. The second step was to compare the consistency between the optimal procedure and the two standard procedures. Thirty-two cases of lung non-small cell carcinoma diagnosed by pathology in Peking University First Hospital in the past two years were randomly selected. The 32 cases were stained in parallel with the SP263 and 22C3 standard procedures, and all stained slides were scored by specialized pathologists for tumor proportion score (TPS). The scoring results were grouped according to < 1%, ≥1% to < 10%, ≥10% to < 50%, and ≥50%. The consistency of PD-L1 detection antibody clone E1L3N and 22C3, E1L3N and SP263 staining results was analyzed.

RESULTS

Tonsil stained slides scores (0-6 points) were as follows: The recommended protocol was 5, 5, 5, 5 and 5. The self-built process ① was 5, 6, 6, 5 and 6. The self-built process ② was 4, 4, 4, 4 and 4.The self-built process ③ was 3, 3, 3, 3 and 3. The self-built process ① was the best with the highest score. The TPSs of 32 non small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cases were as follows: Of self-built process ①, 6 cases were lower than 1%, 5 cases were from 1% to 10%, 10 cases were from 10% to 50%, and 11 cases were higher than 50%; of 22C3 standard procedure, 5 cases were lower than 1%, 3 cases were from 1% to 10%, 13 cases were from 10% to 50%, 11 cases were higher than 50%; of SP263 standard procedure, 7 cases were lower than 1%, 4 cases were from 1% to 10%, 11 cases were from 10% to 50%, 10 cases were higher than 50%. The results of the consistency test were as follows: The κ value for self-built process ① and 22C3 standard procedure was 0.736 (P < 0.001), the agreement was good; the κ value for self-built process ① and SP263 standard procedure was 0.914 (P < 0.001), the agreement was very good.

CONCLUSION

The immunostaining using PD-L1(E1L3N) with validated self-built staining protocol ① by Ventana Benchmark GX platform can obtain high quality of slides, and the TPSs based on these slides are in good agreement with 22C3 and SP263 standard procedures.
