Abstract
Schizophrenia is a relatively common psychiatric syndrome that affects virtually all brain functions. We investigated the plasma proteome of 22 schizophrenia male patients and 20 healthy male controls using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. In total, we have identified 66 protein spots in human plasma and found that seven of them showed altered changes in schizophrenia patients, as compared to healthy controls, which mainly were acute phase proteins (APPs). Among these APPs, haptoglobin alpha2 chain (p < 0.001), haptoglobin beta chain (p < 0.001), alpha1-antitrypsin (p = 0.001), and complement factor B precursor (p = 0.022) showed overexpression in schizophrenia patients, whereas apolipoprotein A-I (p = 0.034) and transthyretin (p = 0.035) were found to be significantly decreased in patients. In addition, the expression of apolipoprotein A-IV (p = 0.018) was significantly up-regulated in schizophrenia patients, as compared to controls. We also found these APP genes, which were differentially expressed in this study, overlap in the schizophrenia susceptibility loci. Our findings further support the hypothesis that the inflammatory response system is linked to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.

Abstract
An increasing number of experiments have found anomalies in mitochondria in the brains of psychotics, which suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction or abnormal cerebral energy metabolism might play an important role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia (SCZ). We adopted a proteomic approach to identify the differential effects on the cerebral cortex and hippocampus mitochondrial protein expression of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats by comparing exposure to typical and atypical antipsychotic medications. Differential mitochondrial protein expressions were assessed using two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis for three groups with Chlorpromazine (CPZ), Clozapine (CLZ), quetiapine (QTP) and a control group. A total of 14 proteins, of which 6 belong to the respiratory electron transport chain (ETC) of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), showed significant changes in quantity including NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) 1 alpha subcomplex 10 (Ndufa10), NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) flavoprotein 2 (Ndufv2), NADH dehydrogenase (ubiquinone) Fe-S protein 3 (Ndufs3), F1-ATPase beta subunit (Atp5b), ATPase, H+ transporting, lysosomal, beta 56/58 kDa, isoform 2 (Atp6v1b2) and ATPase, H+ transporting, V1 subunit A, isoform 1 (Atp6v1a1). The differential proteins subjected to 2D were assessed for levels of mRNA using quantitative real time PCR (Q-RT-PCR), and we also made partial use of Western blotting for assessing differential expression. The results of our study may help to explain variations in SD rats as well as in human response to antipsychotic drugs. In addition, they should improve our understanding of both the curative effects and side effects of antipsychotics and encourage new directions in SCZ research.

Abstract
In this study we focused on detecting schizophrenia related changes of plasma proteins using proteomic technology and examining the relation between schizophrenia and haptoglobin (Hp) genotype. We investigated plasma proteins from schizophrenic subjects (n = 42) and healthy controls (n = 46) by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) in combination with mass spectrometry. To further reveal the genetic relationship between acute phase proteins (APPs) and schizophrenia disease, we tested Hp alpha1/Hp alpha2 (Hp 1/2) polymorphism and two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of Hp, rs2070937 and rs5473, for associations with schizophrenia in the Chinese Han population. With the relatively high number of samples for 2-DE work, we found that four proteins in the family of positive APPs were all up-regulated in patients. In genetic association study, we found significant associations existing between schizophrenia and Hp polymorphisms, Hp 1/2 and rs2070937 variants. Schizophrenia is accompanied by both an altered expression of Hp protein and a different genotype distribution of Hp gene, demonstrating that Hp is associated with schizophrenia. The results from proteomic and genomic aspects both indicate that acute phase reaction is likely to be an aetiological agent in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, but not just an accompanying symptom. The positive APPs are schizophrenic related proteins, with the highly concordant results on four positive APPs.

Abstract
Neurotransmitter-based hypotheses have so far led to only moderate success in predicting new pathogenetic findings in etiology of schizophrenia. On the other hand, the more recent oligodendroglia hypotheses of this disorder have been supported by an increasing body of evidence. For example, the expression level of the myelin associated glycoprotein (MAG) gene has been shown to be significantly lower in schizophrenia patient groups compared to control groups. Such an effect might be a result of genetic variations of the MAG gene. In order to test this hypothesis, we genotyped four markers within the MAG locus in 413 trios sample of the Han Chinese using allele-specific PCR. None of the four markers revealed noticeable allelic significance. However, the four-marker and two-marker haplotypes covering components rs720309 and rs720308 were observed to be significantly associated with schizophrenia (P < 0.0001) in this study. In addition, we identified one common risk haplotype TA (rs720309-rs720308, present in 78.5% of the general population) that showed increased evidence of overtransmission from parents to affected offspring (P = 0.0001). The results demonstrated MAG might play a role in genetic susceptibility to schizophrenia. Furthermore, our finding of a possible association between the MAG locus and schizophrenia is in agreement with the hypotheses of oligodendrltic and myelination dysfunction.

Abstract
The Chinese Han population, the largest population in the world, has traditionally been geographically divided into two parts, the Southern Han and Northern Han. In practice, however, these commonly used ethnic labels are both insufficient and inaccurate as descriptors of inferred genetic clustering, and can lead to the observation of "spurious association" as well as the concealment of real association. In this study, we attempted to address this problem by using 14 microsatellite markers to reconstruct the population genetic structure in 768 Han Chinese samples, including 384 Southern Han and 384 Northern Han, and in samples from Chinese minorities including 48 Yao and 48 BouYei subjects. Furthermore, with a dense set of markers around the region 5q34-35, we built fine-scale haplotype networks for each population/subpopulation and tested for association to schizophrenia susceptibility. We found that more variants in SLIT3 tend to associate with schizophrenia susceptibility in the genetically structured samples, compared to geographically structured samples and samples without identified population substructure. Our results imply that identifying the hidden genetic substructure adds power when detecting association, and suggest that SLIT3 or a nearby gene is associated with schizophrenia.

Abstract
This study aims to identify the effects of antipsychotics on plasma proteins, and on the proteins associated with schizophrenia. We applied proteomics technology to screen protein aberrations in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with antipsychotics and schizophrenic patients undergoing medication. ApoA-I was found significantly increased in the chlorpromazine-treated rats and decreased in the patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia, which suggest that decreased levels of apoA-I might be associated with the pathology of schizophrenia and that chlorpromazine increases apoA-I levels as part of its therapeutic action.

Abstract
This study aims to find the biomarkers or associated proteins in body fluids of schizophrenia patients so that we can further understand the etiology of schizophrenia. We applied proteomic technologies combining two-dimensional electrophoresis with Coomassie blue staining and mass spectrometry and identified a procedure for the clinical screening of disease-influenced body fluid proteins in two sets of samples, plasma from 19 schizophrenia patients and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 35 drug-treated schizophrenic patients and 36 healthy controls. The expression of transthyretin (TTR) tetramer increased significantly in plasma of schizophrenic patients after a valid 2 months in-hospital antipsychotic treatment. Conversely, the expression of the TTR tetramer and apolipoprotein E (ApoE) was down-regulated by up to 1.68 and 3.62 times, respectively, in the CSF of schizophrenia patients compared to that of normal controls, which has not been reported previously. Considering that the TTR tetramer and ApoE are both retinoid transporters, retinoid dysfunction might be involved in the pathology of schizophrenia.

Abstract
Chlorpromazine and clozapine are antipsychotic agents used to relieve symptoms of early-diagnosed schizophrenia. In this study, we used proteomics technology to screen the protein aberration in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with these two antipsychotic agents. Our goal was to identify the effects of antipsychotics on hippocampal proteins in rats. Protein expression profiles were compared in each experimental group using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time of flight mass spectrometry. Malate dehydrogenase, peroxiredoxin 3, vacuolar ATP synthase subunit beta and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 1 were found to have altered expression levels in the groups treated with antipsychotics compared with the matched controls. These findings should contribute to identifying new targets for disease preventing pharmacological agents and be beneficial for the development of more effective agents.

Abstract
Platanus occidentalis L., called American sycamore or American plane, is native to North America. The trees are commonly planted throughout the world on the sides of roads and in parks. In June 2012, diseased leaves exhibiting signs of powdery mildew from a park in Daegu City of Korea were sent to Plant Clinic of Seoul National University for diagnosis. Our observations in Daegu City during September and October 2012 showed that nearly 99% of the approximately 1,000 trees surveyed were infected with a powdery mildew. Voucher specimens (n = 6) were deposited at the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Symptoms were characterized by chlorosis, distortion, or cupping of young leaves. White superficial colonies developed amphigenously on leaves. Hyphae were flexuous to straight, branched, septate, 4 to 7 μm wide, and had lobed appressoria. Conidiophores were 120 to 350 × 5 to 7.5 μm and produced conidia singly. Foot-cells of conidiophores were straight, cylindric, and 115 to 200 μm long. Conidia were hyaline, ellipsoid-ovoid, measured 33 to 47.5 × 17.5 to 29 μm with a length/width ratio of 1.5 to 2.0, lacked distinct fibrosin bodies, and showed reticulate wrinkling of the outer walls. Germ tubes were produced on the subterminal position of conidia. No chasmothecia were observed. The structures and measurements were compatible with those of the anamorphic state of Erysiphe platani (Howe) U. Braun & S. Takam. (1). To confirm the identification, the complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA from isolate KUS-F26959 was amplified with nested PCR and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 625 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JX997805). A GenBank BLAST search of this sequence showed only one base substitution with the four sequences (JQ365940 to JQ365943) of E. platani on Platanus spp. Pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculation tests by gently pressing diseased leaves onto young leaves of three 2-year-old disease-free seedlings. Three non-inoculated plants were used as control. Plants were maintained in a greenhouse at 24 to 30°C. Inoculated leaves developed symptoms after 7 days, whereas the control plants remained symptomless. The fungus present on the inoculated leaves was morphologically identical to that observed on the original diseased leaves, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Since E. platani first was recorded in the United States in 1874, it has been regarded as endemic in North America. From the second half of the 20th century, introduction and expansion of the range of this fungus to South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Europe, and Asia have been reported (1,2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of E. platani infections of P. occidentalis in Korea. This species was recorded on P.× hispanica from Japan in 1999 (4) and on P. orientalis from China in 2006 (3), suggesting invasive spread of the sycamore powdery mildew in East Asia. Abstract
The nucleotide sequence of the 3'-terminal region of the Korean isolate of cymbidium mosaic virus (CyMV-Ca) from a naturally infected cattleya was determined. The sequence contains an open reading frame (ORF) coding for the viral coat protein (CP) at the 3'-end and three other ORFs (triple gene block or movement protein) of CyMV. The CP gene encodes a polypeptide chain of 220 amino acids with a molecular mass of 23,760 Da. The deduced CP sequence showed a strong homology with those of two CyMVs reported. A construct of the CyMV-Ca CP gene in the antisense orientation in the plant expression vector pMBP1 was transferred via Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation into Nicotiana occidentalis which is a propagation host of CyMV. The T1 progeny of the transgenic plants were inoculated with CyMV and found to be highly resistant to CyMV infection.

Abstract
Quercus glauca Thunb. (syn. Cyclobalanopsis glauca (Thunb.) Oerst.), known as ring-cupped oak or Japanese blue oak, is a dominant tree species commonly found in evergreen forests in East Asia (2). In May 2012, hundreds of Q. glauca were found heavily affected by a powdery mildew in several locations of Jeju Islands, Korea. Symptoms on overwintered leaves appeared as circular to irregular blackish violet to dark brown felt-like growths with numerous chasmothecia on abaxial leaf surfaces. New infections on current-year leaves started in early summer and were characterized by typical white patches with abundant sporulation on abaxial leaf surfaces. In early autumn, with formation of special aerial hyphae and without further sporulation, the patches turned light brown to brown. Formation of chasmothecia was noticed from late autumn. The adaxial leaf surface was free of powdery mildew growths and exhibited yellowing and discoloration. Voucher specimens were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Special aerial hyphae were falcate to curved, aseptate, at first hyaline, later deep brown to purplish brown, thick-walled, and 80 to 140 × 6 to 15 μm. Conidiophores were 175 to 245 × 10 to 12 μm, and produced 2 to 4 immature conidia in chains with a sinuate outline. Foot-cells of conidiophores were cylindrical and 80 to 120 μm long. Conidia were lemon- to barrel-shaped, 26 to 35 × 17 to 24 μm with a length/width ratio of 1.2 to 1.6, and devoid of fibrosin bodies. Primary conidia were apically conical and basally subtruncate. Germ tubes produced in the lateral to perihilar position of conidia were long and slender (3 μm wide). Chasmothecia were scattered or gregarious, partly embedded with special aerial hyphae, dark brown, spherical, 55 to 70 μm in diameter, and contained a single ascus. Chasmothecial peridia consisted of two layers. Exoperidia (outer layer) were composed of dark brown, polygonal cells 10 to 20 μm wide. Endoperidia (inner layer) consisted of hyaline, polygonal cells 10 to 15 μm wide. Appendages were basally attached, mycelioid, rare or few, and pale brown to rusty brown. Asci were short stalked, 55 to 72 × 35 to 46 μm, had a terminal oculus 10 to 20 μm wide, and contained 8 ascospores. Ascospores were oblong-elliptical, 22 to 27 × 10 to 12.5 μm, subhyaline, and contained 1 or 2 oil drops. The specific measurements and characteristics (especially falcate aerial hyphae) were consistent with those of Cystotheca wrightii Berk. & M.A. Curtis (1). Fungal DNA was extracted by the Chelex method. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA of KUS-F27309 was amplified with primers ITS5/P3 and sequenced directly (4). The resulting 589-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KF735066). A BLAST search in GenBank showed that the Korean isolate had 100% homology with C. wrightii on Q. glauca from Japan (AB000932). Powdery mildews of Q. glauca associated with C. wrightii have been known in Japan, Taiwan, and China (1,3), but not in Korea. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of the exercise on glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) gene expression in skeletal muscles of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. METHODS Three experiment groups of rats were investigated: diabetic non-exercise group; diabetic exercise group; and normal controls. Diabetic exercise rats were swim-trained for 6 weeks. The GULT4 mRNA of skeletal muscle cells was determined with dot blot. RESULTS There was weak gene expression of GULT4 in diabetic rats, and dot blot revealed that the GLUT4 mRNA decrease 54.9% in skeletal muscle cells compared with the normal control. After 6 weeks exercise training, the hyperglycemia of diabetic exercise rats decreased significantly (from 18.5 +/- 1.9 mmol/L to 14.0 +/- 3.3 mmol/L, t = 4.64 P < 0.01). In muscle cells of diabetic exercise rats, the GLUT4 mRNA increased 56% as compared with the diabetic rats (t = 15.56, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION Chronic hyperglycemia may inhibit the gene expression of GLUT4 in diabetic rats, which caused the post-receptor insulin resistance in peripheral tissue. Exercise training can improve the impaired GLUT4 expression in diabetic rats, which may contribute to the mechanisms of enhanced insulin sensitivity and decreased hyperglycemia in diabetics mellitus.
