Abstract
The types of feline coronaviruses that are prevalent throughout Japan were determined by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a monoclonal antibody (MAb) to feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) Type II and neutralizing test using Type II FIPV as challenge virus. A total of 1,079 cat serum samples were tested by indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) assay for FIPV Type II antigen, all 42 sample from natural cases of FIP, 138 of 647 (21.3%) from cases with some chronic diseases and 57 of 390 (14.6%) from apparently non-diseased cases were positive. Of the 42 cases with FIP, 29 (69%) and 13 (31%) were found to have infection with FIPV Types I and II, respectively. Of the cases with chronic diseases, 111 (80.4%) were shown to have infection with FIPV or FECV Type I, while 14 (10.1%) with FIPV or FECV Type II. All of the 57 apparently non-diseased cases seemed to have been infected with FIPV or FECV Type I. These results indicated that feline coronavirus Type I is more high prevalent in Japan.

Abstract
Recently identified hypothalamic peptides called orexins (or hypocretins) have been implicated in the sleep-wake cycle and in sleep disorder narcolepsy. Neuropathological studies have shown that in patients with narcolepsy, global reduction in the expression of orexins occurs due to the loss of orexin neurons in the hypothalamus. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis has confirmed a reduced or undetectable level of orexin-A in most narcolepsy patients. In this study, measurement of plasma orexin showed significantly lower concentrations in patients with narcolepsy than in age- and gender-matched normal controls. These data suggest that low levels of orexin-A in plasma could serve as a biological marker for narcolepsy.

Abstract
N-Ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor (NSF) and its homologues play a central role in vesicular trafficking in eukaryotic cells. We have identified a NSF homologue in Plasmodium falciparum (PfNSF). The reported PfNSF gene sequence (GenBank accession number CAB10575) indicated that PfNSF comprises 783 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 89,133. The overall identities of its gene and amino acid sequences with those of rat NSF are 50.9 and 48.8%, respectively. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis and Northern blotting with total P. falciparum RNA indicated expression of the PfNSF gene. Polyclonal antibodies against a conserved region of NSF specifically recognized an 89-kDa polypeptide in the parasite cells. After homogenization of the parasite cells, approximately 90% of an 89-kDa polypeptide is associated with particulate fraction, suggesting membrane-bound nature of PfNSF. PfNSF was present within both the parasite cells and the vesicular structure outside of the parasite cells. The export of PfNSF outside of the parasite cells appears to occur at the early trophozoite stage and to terminate at the merozoite stage. The export of PfNSF is inhibited by brefeldin A, with 9 microM causing 50% inhibition. Immunoelectromicroscopy indicated that intracellular PfNSF was associated with organelles such as food vacuoles and that extracellular PfNSF was associated with vesicular structures in the erythrocyte cytoplasm. These results indicate that PfNSF expressed in the malaria parasite is exported to the extracellular space and then localized in intraerythrocytic vesicles in a brefeldin A-sensitive manner. It is suggested that a vesicular transport mechanism is involved in protein export targeted to erythrocyte membranes during intraerythrocytic development of the malaria parasite.

Abstract
Enhancement of feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) infection of feline macrophages was studied using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to the FIPV strain 79-1146. Adherent cells recovered from the feline lung and peritoneal cavity phagocytosed fixed red blood cells, and formed Fc-mediated rosettes. Enhancement of virus infection by MAb was investigated by inoculating alveolar macrophages with a mixtures of viral suspension and MAb, and examining the cells for intracellular viral antigen by the immunofluorescence assay and the amount of infectious virus in the supernatant fluid after incubation. The replication of FIPV in macrophages was enhanced by non-neutralizing MAbs recognizing peplomer protein (S) and transmembrane protein (M) of the virus. Even among the MAbs having the ability to neutralize FIPV strain 79-1146, some reversely enhanced virus infection when they were diluted. The enhancement was suppressed by pretreatment of the MAb with protein A. The enhancement was reduced by the use of F(ab')2 fragment of MAb. These results demonstrated antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) of FIPV infection in macrophage. The replication of FIPV 79-1146 strain in macrophages from FIPV antibody-positive cats was more enhanced than in those from antibody-negative cats.

Abstract
With a view to finding more effective antiulcer agents, a series of 2-benzylthio-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4(3H)-quinazolinones and related compounds were synthesized and evaluated in a histamine-stimulated gastric secretion model. The sodium salt of the 2-(dimethylamino)benzylthio derivative (8) showed gastric mucosal protection and gastric antisecretion activities, and was also effective against experimental gastric and duodenal ulcers induced by some ulcerogenic agents. Based on a comparison of the antiulcer properties of 8 with those of the lead compounds (1 and 2) and cimetidine, it appears that, for improvement of antiulcer activity, the reduction of gastric acidity is a more important factor than the reduction of gastric volume output or gastric total acid output.

Abstract
Effects of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP38) and PACAP27 on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems were examined and compared to those of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) in anesthetized beagle dogs. Intravenous PACAP27 and PACAP38 produced a decrease in mean arterial blood pressure (MBP), and an increase in both femoral arterial blood flow (ABF) and in frequency of respiration (FR) with a dose-dependent relationship between 10 and 300 pmol/kg. PACAP27 produced a dose-dependent increase in heart rate (HR) between 10 and 300 pmol/kg while PACAP38 induced tachycardia which was not dose-dependent. Administration of 300 pmol/kg PACAP38 and PACAP27 produced extreme hypertension after transient hypotension. PACAP38 produced severe bradycardia after transient tachycardia. The cardiovascular actions of PACAP38 were persistent compared to those of PACAP27. Intravenous injection of 10-300 pmol/kg VIP brought about hypotension, tachycardia and an increase in ABF and FR with a dose-dependent relationship. VIP, at 2000 pmol/kg, did not produce the biphasic response obtained by a large dose of PACAP38. The present studies demonstrate that PACAP partially possesses VIP-like cardiovascular and respiratory actions and that the C-terminal 11 amino acid residues of PACAP38 are presumably responsible for a prolongation of its actions.

Abstract
Five healthy adult women aged 20 to 28 had 12-15 polysomnographic recordings, as well as daily basal body temperature and multiple LH, FSH, estrogen and progesterone measurements taken during a single menstrual cycle. Sleep stages were scored both visually and with a spindle and delta-wave, real-time, automatic analysing system. A cubic growth-curve model showed that the frequency of sleep spindles changed markedly over the menstrual cycle: spindle frequency was lowest about 18 days before onset of menses and highest 3 days before onset of menses. Slow waves did not change. The percentages of Stage 1 and REM sleep showed small changes during the menstrual cycle, and other parameters of visually scored sleep showed no tendency to change. Spindle frequency may reflect the effects of sex hormones on the reticular thalamic nucleus and may be a quantitative marker of premenstrual sleep disturbances.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the duration of masticatory muscle activity during daytime and vertical craniofacial morphology in children and adults. Thirty children (12 boys and 18 girls) and 30 adults (20 men and 10 women) with normal anteroposterior skeletal relations, acceptable occlusions, and without any temporomandibular joint disorders, were selected as subjects. Activities of the masseter, temporal, and digastric muscles were recorded for 3 hours during daytime, excluding the periods for meals, sleep, and hard-exercise, using a portable electromyogram recording system. A lateral cephalogram was taken of each subject at the intercuspal position to divide the subjects into 3 different facial types, ie, low, average, and high angle groups. Masseter, temporal, and digastric muscle activities mainly consisted of low-amplitude bursts during daytime. Children exhibited longer duration of temporal muscle activity, whereas the masseter muscle presented longer duration of activity in adults. The activities of masseter and digastric muscles were significantly related with the vertical facial type in both children and adults, although temporal muscle activity presented no significant relationship with the craniofacial morphology. The duration of masticatory muscle activity during daytime showed a significant difference between children and adults, indicating a close association with vertical craniofacial morphology in children and adults.

Abstract
The choice of opiate receptor subtype by alpha- and beta-neo-endorphin was studied in isolated preparations. Neo-endorphins had significant inhibitory actions on the electrically evoked contractions of guinea-pig ileum, mouse vas deferens and rabbit ileum as well as on the rabbit vas deferens which had been shown to contain kappa-receptors exclusively. Mr 2266, a relatively specific kappa-receptor antagonist, was more effective than naloxone, a relatively mu-receptor antagonist, to antagonize the agonist actions of neo-endorphins in either the guinea-pig and rabbit ileum or in the rabbit vas deferens. By contrast, in the mouse vas deferens, the effectiveness of Mr 2266 to antagonize the agonist actions of neo-endorphins was low and similar to that of naloxone. The potencies of neo-endorphins relative to that of ethylketocyclazocine, a representative kappa-receptor agonist, in the guinea-pig ileum were similar to those in the rabbit ileum but were significant different from those in the mouse vas deferens. The data indicate that neo-endorphins act as kappa-receptor agonists in either the guinea-pig and rabbit ileum or in the rabbit vas deferens while in the mouse vas deferens they act on opiate receptor subtypes other than kappa- and mu-receptors.

Abstract
Peripherally administered interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) has been shown to increase extracellular norepinephrine (NE) concentration in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus. The present study was carried out using an in vivo microdialysis technique in conscious rats in order to examine the possible involvement of the area postrema (AP) and the abdominal vagal afferent nerves in this effect. Extracellular NE concentrations in the PVN region were measured by high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. In AP-lesioned or abdominal-vagotomized rats, the NE increase was significantly attenuated compared to that in sham-operated rats; this reduction was greater in abdominal-vagotomized rats than in AP-lesioned rats. The results suggest that the AP as well as the abdominal vagal afferent nerves is involved in intraperitoneal (i.p.) administered IL-1 beta-induced NE release in the PVN region.

Abstract
The level of urinary thiobarbituric acid (TBA) reactants in healthy human subjects due to malonaldehyde derivatives was measured to assess the lipid peroxidation status of the whole body. For each subject the TBA reactant level over a day varied over a 2-3 fold range while the daily level varied over a 1.5-3 fold range under normal life-style conditions. One of the factors causing an increase in the reactant level within a single day may be the subjects's physical activity, because the reactant level of each subject was higher in the afternoon or in the evening than in the morning. Remaining awake all night or hard exercise caused a dramatic increase in the reactant level over a day and in the daily reactant level. The reactant level within a single day for a subject was increased 5.5 fold and the daily level 3 fold by remaining awake all night, and the level within a day was increased 22 fold by hard exercise while the corresponding daily level was increased 7 fold. It is unlikely that food, alcohol and smoking greatly affect the reactant level. The results suggest that increased physical activity enhances lipid peroxidation in the whole body and thus the increased urinary excretion of malonaldehyde derivatives.

Abstract
Membrane phospholipid turnover was investigated during histamine release from rat mast cells. Addition of calcium ionophore A23187 (0.5 microgram/ml) to mast cells prelabeled with [3H]glycerol induced the rapid and progressive increase in phosphatidic acid (PA) and 1,2-diacylglycerol (DG), which was concomitant with the small rise in phosphatidylinositol (PI). Loss of the level in triacylglycerol (TG) was very marked. Polyamine compound 48/80 (5 micrograms/ml) was shown to cause rises in PA, 1,2-DG, and PI without any significant changes in TG. Both stimuli increased incorporation of exogenous [3H]glycerol into phospholipids, indicating the involvement of de novo synthesis in phospholipid metabolism. Studies with [3H]arachidonic acid-labeled mast cells showed an enhanced liberation of radioactive arachidonate and metabolites upon histamine release. There were associated decreases of radioactivity in phosphatidylcholine (PC) and TG when exposed to A23187, while phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) was degraded as a result of 48/80 activation. The transient increases of [3H]arachidonoyl-1,2-DG and PA were caused by 48/80, while A23187 showed a gradual rise in the radioactivity in these two lipid fractions. These findings reflect activation of phospholipase C. When mast cells were activated by low concentrations of A23187 (0.1 microgram/ml) and 48/80 (0.5 microgram/ml), different behaviors of PI metabolism were observed. An early degradation of PI and a subsequent formation of 1,2-DG and PA suggest that the lower concentrations of these agents stimulate the PI cycle initiated by PI breakdown rather than de novo synthesis. These results demonstrate that marked and selective changes in membrane phospholipid metabolism occur during histamine release from mast cells, and that these reactions seem to be controlled by the coordination of degradation and biosynthesis, depending on the type and the concentration of stimulants. A23187 stimulates arachidonate release perhaps via the cleavages of PC and TG, whereas 48/80 liberates arachidonate from PE.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the biting function during the entire day in young adults by measuring the masseter muscle activity with a 24-hour electromyography (EMG) system. With this system, the masseter muscle activity for 24 hours was recorded in 20 male and 10 female young adult subjects with acceptable occlusion. For the male subjects, means of the number and total duration of bursts over level 2, which is one-fourth of the maximum discharge voltage during maximum clenching, were 1938 times and 357 seconds. For the female subjects, the values were 2356 times and 419 seconds. A large percentage of such high amplitude bursts as level 3 or 4 was observed during meals in both groups. These results indicated that most of the strong bursts of the masseter muscle appeared only during meals and a number of low amplitude bursts were observed during the entire day, although masseter muscle activity during the entire day in young adults was less than expected. It is anticipated that the nature of masticatory muscle activity revealed in this study might provide valuable information about the association between the biting function and the craniofacial structure or malocclusion.

Abstract
Characteristic changes that appear in the biopsied olfactory mucosa of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) were examined with immunohistochemical staining. Specimens were obtained from patients with clinical diagnoses of AD. Patients with vascular dementia and age-matched patients without dementia were used for controls. In most AD cases, neurofibrillary tangle-like abnormal tau protein (Tau) immunoreactivity was seen in the dendrites and perikarya of the olfactory receptor cells and in the nerve bundles. A senile plaque-like extracellular mass was found in the olfactory epithelium, and it reacted strongly to an anti-Tau antiserum and weakly to an anti-amyloid-beta protein antiserum. Ubiquitin (Ubq) immunoreactivity was also observed in the dendrites. Tau immunoreactivity of the perikarya and extracellular mass, and Ubq immunoreactivity were especially characteristic of the olfactory mucosa of AD patients. From these results, it is clear that the same pathologic changes in the brain are also present in the olfactory mucosa of patients with AD. Not only disruption of the central olfactory pathway, but also an olfactory disturbance of AD patients is caused by peripheral changes. Furthermore, an olfactory mucosal biopsy could be a useful method for a definitive diagnosis of AD.

Abstract
1. After a single oral dose of d-limonene (200-1200 mg/kg) no effects were observed on liver triglyceride, microsomal protein, cytochrome b5, and the drug-metabolizing enzymes. Glycogen content was slightly decreased at doses higher than 800 mg/kg, and cytochrome P-450 and delta-aminolaevulinic acid synthetase activity was slightly increased at 1200 mg/kg. 2. After repeated treatment (400 mg/kg/day) for 30 days, the relative liver weight and hepatic phospholipid content were only slightly increased, and liver and serum cholesterol were decreased 49 and 8%, respectively. Of the phospholipid fatty acids, palmitic, linoleic and arachidonic acids were increased, and stearic acid was decreased. Aminopyrine demethylase and aniline hydroxylase were increased 26 and 22%, respectively, and cytochrome P-450 and b5 were likewise increased 31 and 30%.

Abstract
A multi-center study on seasonal affective disorder (SAD) was conducted from the autumn of 1988 to the spring of 1989 with the cooperation of 16 facilities in Japan. Forty-six SAD patients were identified among 1104 respondents to our advertisements in mass media, or patients seen at the outpatient clinics. Essentially similar findings to other previous reports were obtained in terms of onset age of the first episode, duration of episode, high proportion of depression in first-degree relatives and atypical vegetative symptoms. However, a nearly equal sex ratio, together with a high proportion of unipolar depression, is characteristic of the present study. Increased appetite and carbohydrate craving were predominant only in female patients, whereas hypersomnia was prominent in both sexes. Effective response to light therapy was found in 17 SAD patients. However, a controlled study on a large number of patients is required to allow final conclusions on the efficacy of light therapy in Japanese SAD patients.

Abstract
The effects of methylnitrosourea (MNU) on the development of preimplantation mouse embryos were investigated in this study. ICR mice were treated intraperitoneally with single doses of 10, 20, and 30 mg MNU/kg body wt on day 0, 1, 2, or 3 of pregnancy. The uterine contents were examined on day 18 of pregnancy. The fetuses were examined for external and skeletal abnormalities. No significant differences were observed in the number of implantation sites between all the MNU-treated groups and controls. MNU treatment on day 2 or 3 of pregnancy caused dose-dependent significant increases in the incidence of abnormal fetuses over the control level, while treatment on day 0 or 1 failed to cause an increase of abnormalities. Cleft palate, exencephalus, and malformed vertebrae were the most common types of abnormalities. In the embryo transfer experiments, the frequency of fetal abnormalities induced when embryos were transferred from MNU-treated females to untreated pseudopregnant females was significantly higher than that induced when embryos were transferred from untreated females to MNU-treated or untreated pseudopregnant females. The results in the present study confirm and extend the previously proposed hypothesis that the direct effects of MNU on preimplantation embryos make a significant contribution to the induction of fetal malformations.

Abstract
Structural plasticity of dendritic spines, which underlies higher brain functions including learning and memory, is dynamically regulated by the actin cytoskeleton and its associated proteins. Drebrin A is an F-actin-binding protein preferentially expressed in the brain and localized in the dendritic spines of mature neurons. Isoform conversion from drebrin E to drebrin A and accumulation of the latter in dendritic spines occurs during synapse maturation. We have previously demonstrated that drebrin A plays a pivotal role in spine morphogenesis and plasticity. However, it is unclear whether drebrin A plays a specific role in processes required for structural plasticity, and whether drebrin E can substitute in this role. To answer these questions, we analyzed mutant mice (named DAKO mice), in which isoform conversion from drebrin E to drebrin A is disrupted. In DAKO mouse brain, drebrin E continues to be expressed throughout life instead of drebrin A. Electrophysiological studies using hippocampal slices revealed that long-term potentiation of CA1 synapses was impaired in adult DAKO mice, but not in adolescents. In parallel with this age-dependent impairment, DAKO mice exhibited impaired hippocampus-dependent fear learning in an age-dependent manner; the impairment was evident in adult mice, but not in adolescents. In addition, histological investigation revealed that the spine length of the apical dendrite of CA1 pyramidal cells was significantly longer in adult DAKO mice than in wild-type mice. Our data indicate that the roles of drebrin E and drebrin A in brain function are different from each other, that the isoform conversion of drebrin is critical, and that drebrin A is indispensable for normal synaptic plasticity and hippocampus-dependent fear memory in the adult brain.

Abstract
The effects of endogenous epinephrine (E), released by glucagon injection, and exogenously infused E on plasma norepinephrine (NE) and cardiovascular responses before and after beta-blockade were studied in patients with essential hypertension and in age-matched normotensive controls. The resting plasma NE and E levels were significantly higher in the borderline hypertensive subjects (NE: 251 +/- 21 pg/ml [SEM], p less than 0.005; E: 57 +/- 5, p less than 0.05, n = 18) than in controls (NE: 129 +/- 12; E: 39 +/- 5, n = 18). An intravenous injection of glucagon (1.0 mg) induced a transient rise of both plasma catecholamine levels and blood pressure in every subject studied. Plasma E levels rose transiently and returned to the basal levels by 20 minutes after the injection, whereas plasma NE levels showed a more prolonged rise over 20 minutes. beta-Blockade with propranolol did not affect the plasma E response to glucagon, but inhibited the prolonged rise of plasma NE levels. An intravenous infusion of exogenous E (1.25-1.50 micrograms/min) for 30 minutes caused an apparent rise of both plasma NE levels and blood pressure, which lasted more than 60 minutes after stopping the E infusion. Propranolol did not affect the time course of plasma E but again inhibited the prolonged rise of both plasma NE levels and blood pressure. No significant differences could be observed in the cardiovascular or plasma NE responses to glucagon or to E infusion between normal and hypertensive subjects. These findings lend support to the view that plasma E can act physiologically as a sustained stimulator of presynaptic beta-adrenergic receptors, which leads to an enhanced NE release from peripheral sympathetic nerve terminals and a rise of blood pressure in humans.

Abstract
The active form of vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) has been reported to be effective on sleep-wake rhythm disorders. Previous studies, however, were performed under open trial, and the effect of vitamin B12 has not been properly evaluated. The aim of this double-blind study was to investigate the efficacy of methylcobalamin on delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS). Methylcobalamin (3 mg/day) or placebo was administered for 4 weeks. The subjects were 50 patients with DSPS aged 13-55 years (26.8 +/- 1.3), 27 of whom received the active drug while 23 received the placebo. No significant differences were observed between the 2 groups in subjective evaluations of mood or drowsiness during the daytime or in night sleep by sleep-log evaluation. These results indicate that 3 mg methylcobalamin administered over 4 weeks is not an effective treatment for DSPS.

Abstract
Phospholipid metabolisms in rat mast cells activated by ionophore A23187 and compound 48/80 were examined with reference to 'phosphatidylinositol (PI) cycle'. The addition of A23187 to [3H]glycerol-prelabeled mast cells induced a marked accumulation of the radioactivity in 1,2-diacylglycerol(DG) and phosphatidic acid(PA) within 10 to 30 sec. A great enhancement of [3H]glycerol incorporation into PA and PI was also detected during histamine release. On the other hand, 48/80 was far less effective than A23187 both in producing 1,2- DG and PA and in accerelating [3H]glycerol incorporation into PA and PI, despite the comparable ability of histamine release. The activity of Ca2+ uptake into mast cells, as measured by pulse-labeling with 45Ca2+, was increased when exposed to both of two agents. These data provide circumstantial evidence that phospholipid metabolisms, mainly de novo PI synthesis, may be a part of the triggering events for Ca2+ mobilization and secretory process. The PI metabolism induced by two different stimulants appears to behave in a different manner.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the application of mild intermittent footshock stress can cause changes in the nitric oxide (NO) and norepinephrine (NE) releases in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) region and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Extracellular levels of NO metabolites and NE in the PVN region and mPFC were determined using an in vivo brain microdialysis technique in conscious rats. In the PVN region, we demonstrated that perfusion of N-methyl-D-aspartate through a microdialysis probe resulted in a dose-dependent increase in NO metabolite levels, whereas intraperitoneal administration of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester produced a dose-dependent reduction in the levels of NO metabolites. The levels of NO metabolites in the PVN region increased after intraperitoneal administration of interleukin-1beta in a dose-dependent manner, as we previously reported. This increase in NO metabolite levels was abolished 60 min after systemic administration of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester compared to the vehicle-treated control group. Twenty minutes of intermittent footshock induced NE release but did not induce NO release in the PVN region. On the contrary, in the mPFC, 20 min of intermittent footshock induced both NO and NE releases. The present results reveal different patterns and time courses in NO and NE releases between the PVN region and the mPFC in response to mild intermittent footshock stress. These findings are likely to have helpful suggestions for our understanding of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the limbic forebrain system response to different kinds of stress.

Abstract
Phospholipid metabolism in rat mast cells activated by antigen was examined with reference to phosphatidylinositol (PI) turnover. Upon antigen stimulation, histamine release from passively sensitized mast cells with IgE was potentiated by adding phosphatidylserine (PS). The addition of antigen to [3H]glycerol-prelabeled and sensitized mast cells induced a marked loss of radioactivity of PI and a concurrent accumulation of 1,2-diacylglycerol (DG) and phosphatidic acid (PA) within 5 to 60 sec. Furthermore, this antigen-induced PI breakdown was enhanced in the presence of Mg2+. Histamine release occurred in parallel with PI breakdown. On the other hand, the transient Ca2+ influx into mast cells, as measured by uptake of 45Ca2+, was found to occur quickly after cells were activated by antigen, which was concerted with PI breakdown. These results suggest that enhanced PI turnover may be an important step in the biochemical sequence of events leading to release of histamine, and that not only Ca2+ but also Mg2+ appears to take a part in stimulus-response coupling in rat mast cells.
