Abstract
Chronic high-calorie diet (HCD) combined with physical inactivity promotes obesity and insulin resistance (IR). This study aimed to analyse the comparable effect of moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) and moderate-intensity interval training (MIIT) on visceral fat weight and IR in subjects exposed to HCD. This randomised post-test research used only a control group design with female rats (Wistar norvegicus), 8 weeks old and 100-200 g of bodyweight. They were randomly divided into four groups: standard diet group (C), HCD group (C1), HCD combined with MICT group (C2) and HCD combined with MIIT group (C3). Each group consisted of six rats. HCD consisted of ad libitum standard diet plus dextrose solution by oral gavage for 4 weeks. The MICT was conducted by swimming plus 6% load of body weight for 10 min in the first week, for 20 min in the second week and 30 min in the third and fourth week. The MIIT was conducted by swimming in a ratio between swimming and rest time at 2:1 plus 6% load of BW, performed 5×/week for 4 weeks, and increased progressively. The mean body weight pre-intervention was 152.79±13.280 g and 150.12±9.195 g post-intervention (P=0.115). The mean fasting blood glucose pre-intervention was 79±8.668 mg/dl, and post-intervention 86.29±12.142 mg/dl (P=0.142). The mean visceral fat weight between C (1.94±0.66 g), C1 (1.45±0.47 g), C2 (1.41±0.44 g), and C3 (1.22±0.59 g) was not significant (P=0.179). The mean triglyceride level for C (173.33±30.30 mg/dl), C1 (157.16±47.32 mg/dl), C2 (112.83±25.49 mg/dl), and C3 (80.33±23.47 mg/dl) was significant (P=0.000). The mean IR model for C (4.796±0.070), C1 (4.728±0.125), C2 (4.620±0.123), C3 (4.360±0.143) was significant (P=0.000). In conclusion, both MICT and MIIT have an effect to improve IR and TG. The MIIT was more effective to improve IR compared to MICT in the female rats exposed to an HCD.

Abstract
In recent years, synthetic calcium phosphate (CaP) ceramics have emerged as an alternative to bone grafts in the treatment of large critical-sized bone defects. To successfully substitute for bone grafts, materials must be osteoinductive, that is, they must induce osteogenic differentiation and subsequent bone formation in vivo. Although a set of osteoinductive CaP ceramics has been developed, the precise biological mechanism by which a material directs cells toward osteogenesis and the role of individual chemical and physical properties in this mechanism remain incompletely understood. Here, we used proteomics to compare serum protein adsorption to two CaP ceramics with different osteoinductive potential, namely an osteoinductive β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and a non-osteoinductive hydroxyapatite (HA). Moreover, we analyzed the protein profiles of human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) cultured on these two ceramics. The serum protein adsorption experiments in the absence of cells highlighted the proteins that are highly abundant in the serum and/or have a high affinity to CaP. The extent of adsorption was suggested to be affected by the available surface area for binding and by the ion exchange dynamics on the surface. Several proteins were uniquely expressed by hMSCs on TCP and HA surfaces. Proteins identified as enriched on TCP were involved in processes related to wound healing, cell proliferation, and the production of extracellular matrix. On the other hand, proteins that were enriched on HA were involved in processes related to protein production, translation, localization, and secretion. In addition, we performed a separate proteomics analysis on TCP, HA, and two biphasic calcium phosphates with known osteoinductive potential and performed a clustering analysis on a combination of a set of proteins found to be enriched on osteoinductive materials with a set of proteins already known to be involved in osteogenesis. This yielded two protein networks potentially involved in the process of osteoinduction – one consisting of collagen fragments and collagen-related enzymes and a second consisting of endopeptidase inhibitors and regulatory proteins. The results of this study show that protein profiling can be a useful tool to help understand the effect of biomaterial properties on the interactions between a biomaterial and a biological system. Such understanding will contribute to the design and development of improved biomaterials for (bone) regenerative therapies.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a primary cause of dementia in the middle-aged and elderly worldwide. Animal models for AD are widely used to study the disease mechanisms as well as to test potential therapeutic agents for disease modification. Among the non-genetically manipulated neuroinflammation models for AD, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced animal model is commonly used. This review paper aims to discuss the possible factors that influence rats' response following LPS injection. Factors such as dose of LPS, route of administration, nature and duration of exposure as well as age and gender of animal used should be taken into account when designing a study using LPS-induced memory impairment as model for AD.

Abstract
Impairment of memory is one of the most frequently reported symptoms during sudden hypoxia exposure in human. Cortical atrophy has been linked to the impaired memory function and is suggested to occur with chronic high-altitude exposure. However, the precise molecular mechanism(s) of hypoxia-induced memory impairment remains an enigma. In this work, we review hypoxia-induced learning and memory deficit in human and rat studies. Based on data from rat studies using different protocols of continuous hypoxia, we try to elicit potential mechanisms of hypobaric hypoxia-induced memory deficit.

Abstract
Pineal melatonin biosynthesis is regulated by the circadian clock located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus. Melatonin has been found to modulate the learning and memory process in human as well as in animals. Endogenous melatonin modulates the process of newly acquired information into long-term memory, while melatonin treatment has been found to reduce memory deficits in elderly people and in various animal models. However, the mechanisms mediating the enhancing effect of melatonin on memory remain elusive. This review intends to explore the possible mechanisms by looking at previous data on the effects of melatonin treatment on memory performance in rodents.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the outcomes of short term inspiratory muscle training (IMT) combined with chest physiotherapy (CP) on lung function, inspiratory muscle strength, exercise tolerance and quality of life of COPD patients. Materials and Methods: This randomized-controlled trial was conducted at the Terendak Armed Forces Hospital, Melaka. Eighteen hospitalized COPD patients (FEV1 50% to = 80% predicted) were randomized into intervention (IG) and control group (CG). The IG received IMT and CP treatments whilst the CG received only CP for a period of 4 weeks. Assessments of lung function (FEV1/FVC), inspiratory muscle strength (PImax), exercise tolerance (6MWT) and quality of life (SGRQ score) were taken at baseline and after 4 weeks. Results: Analysis showed IG group increased in FEV1/FVC by 19.4%, PImax by 54.7%, 6MWT by 33.2% and quality of life by 52.6% (All, p<0.05). The control group increased in FEV1/FVC by 8.7% (p>0.05), PImax by 15% (p<0.05), 6MWT by 18.9% (p<0.05) and quality of life by 15.6% (p<0.05). Conclusion: The present study has established that by combining inspiratory muscle training (IMT) and chest physiotherapy, provides superior effects on lung function, inspiratory muscle strength, exercise tolerance and quality of life among COPD patients.
