Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst)  pb.

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

Search for New Phenomena in Two-Body Invariant Mass Distributions Using Unsupervised Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140  fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

Observation of WZγ Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ^{'}^{±}νℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}γ (ℓ^{(^{'})}=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst)  fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06  fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV pp Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11  GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Search for Dark Photons in Rare Z Boson Decays with the ATLAS Detector

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

FOXM1 and CENPF are associated with a poor prognosis through promoting proliferation and migration in lung adenocarcinoma

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a clinically challenging disease due to its poor prognosis and limited therapeutic methods. The aim of the present study was to identify prognosis-related genes and therapeutic targets for LUAD. Raw data from the GSE32863, GSE41271 and GSE42127 datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Following normalization, the data were merged into a matrix, which was first used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) and survival analysis were performed to screen potential prognosis-related genes. Gene overlaps among DEGs, survival-related genes and WGCNA genes were finally constructed to obtain candidate genes. An analysis with the STRING database was performed to construct a protein-protein interaction network and hub genes were selected using Cytoscape. The candidate genes were finally identified by univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis. Furthermore, in vivo and in vitro experiments, including immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, Cell Counting Kit-8, colony-formation and migration assays, were performed to validate the potential mechanism of these genes in LUAD. Two genes, namely forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) and centromere protein F (CENPF), were identified as unfavorable indicators of prognosis in patients with LUAD. High expression of FOXM1 and CENPF were associated with poor survival. Furthermore, LUAD cells with FOXM1 and CENPF knockdown showed a significant reduction in proliferation and migration (P<0.05). FOXM1 and CENPF may have an essential role in the prognosis of patients with LUAD by influencing cell proliferation and migration, and they provide potential molecular targets for LUAD therapy.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Measurement of Suppression of Large-Radius Jets and Its Dependence on Substructure in Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72  nb^{-1} and 257  pb^{-1} of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the "ridge"-i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities-and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb^{-1}, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v_{2}, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Temporal Structures in Positron Spectra and Charge-Sign Effects in Galactic Cosmic Rays

We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic positron fluxes in the rigidity range from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 3.4×10^{6} positrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The positron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the electron fluxes at short and long timescales. A hysteresis between the electron fluxes and the positron fluxes is observed with a significance greater than 5σ at rigidities below 8.5 GV. On the contrary, the positron fluxes and the proton fluxes show similar time variation. Remarkably, we found that positron fluxes are modulated more than proton fluxes with a significance greater than 5σ for rigidities below 7 GV. These continuous daily positron fluxes, together with AMS daily electron, proton, and helium fluxes over an 11-year solar cycle, provide unique input to the understanding of both the charge-sign and mass dependencies of cosmic rays in the heliosphere.

Observation of an Excess of Dicharmonium Events in the Four-Muon Final State with the ATLAS Detector

A search is made for potential ccc[over ¯]c[over ¯] tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Observation of the γγ→ττ Process in Pb+Pb Collisions and Constraints on the τ-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44  nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. miR-146a aggravates cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease-like pathology by triggering oxidative stress through MAPK signaling

INTRODUCTION

Mir-146a-5p has been widely recognized as a critical regulatory element in the immune response. However, recent studies have shown that miR-146a-5p may also be involved in the development of Alzheimer disease (AD). Regrettably, the related mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of miR-146a in mice models and SH-SY5Y cells treated with amyloid β (Aβ)1-42.

METHODS

To create a model of AD, SH-SY5Y cells were treated with Aβ1-42 and mice received intracerebroventricular injections of Aβ1-42. Then, the transcriptional levels of miR-146a were estimated by real-time PCR. We transiently transfected the miR-146a-5p mimic/inhibitor into cells and mice to study the role of miR-146a. The role of signaling pathways including p38 and reactive oxygen species (ROS) was studied by using specific inhibitors. Aβ and amyloid-beta precursor protein (APP)levels were measured by immunoblotting. Furthermore, Aβ expression was analyzed by immunofluorescence and histochemical examinations.

RESULTS

Aβ1-42-stimulated SH-SY5Y cells displayed increased transcriptional levels of miR-146a and APP. Moreover, the p38 MAPK signaling pathway and ROS production were activated upon stimulation with a miR-146a-5p mimic. However, treatment with a miR-146a-5p inhibitor decreased the levels of APP, ROS, and p-p38 MAPK. A similar phenomenon was also observed in the animals treated with Aβ1-42, in which miR-146a upregulation increased the expression of Aβ, p-p38, and ROS, while the inhibition of miR-146a had the opposite effect. This suggests that miR-146a increases Aβ deposition and ROS accumulation via the p-p38 signaling pathway.

CONCLUSIONS

Our research demonstrates that miR-146a-5pa increases Aβ deposition by triggering oxidative stress through activation of MAPK signaling.

Strong Constraints on Jet Quenching in Centrality-Dependent p+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV from ATLAS

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36  nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6  pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5  GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4  GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of W Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W→Nμ or W→Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. Test of CP Invariance in Higgs Boson Vector-Boson-Fusion Production Using the H→γγ Channel with the ATLAS Detector

A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Properties of Cosmic-Ray Sulfur and Determination of the Composition of Primary Cosmic-Ray Carbon, Neon, Magnesium, and Sulfur: Ten-Year Results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer

We report the properties of primary cosmic-ray sulfur (S) in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.38×10^{6} sulfur nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment (AMS). We observed that above 90 GV the rigidity dependence of the S flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of Ne-Mg-Si fluxes, which is different from the rigidity dependence of the He-C-O-Fe fluxes. We found that, similar to N, Na, and Al cosmic rays, over the entire rigidity range, the traditional primary cosmic rays S, Ne, Mg, and C all have sizeable secondary components, and the S, Ne, and Mg fluxes are well described by the weighted sum of the primary silicon flux and the secondary fluorine flux, and the C flux is well described by the weighted sum of the primary oxygen flux and the secondary boron flux. The primary and secondary contributions of the traditional primary cosmic-ray fluxes of C, Ne, Mg, and S (even Z elements) are distinctly different from the primary and secondary contributions of the N, Na, and Al (odd Z elements) fluxes. The abundance ratio at the source for S/Si is 0.167±0.006, for Ne/Si is 0.833±0.025, for Mg/Si is 0.994±0.029, and for C/O is 0.836±0.025. These values are determined independent of cosmic-ray propagation.

Temporal Structures in Electron Spectra and Charge Sign Effects in Galactic Cosmic Rays

We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic electron fluxes in the rigidity interval from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 2.0×10^{8} electrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The electron fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. Recurrent electron flux variations with periods of 27 days, 13.5 days, and 9 days are observed. We find that the electron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the proton fluxes. Remarkably, a hysteresis between the electron flux and the proton flux is observed with a significance of greater than 6σ at rigidities below 8.5 GV. Furthermore, significant structures in the electron-proton hysteresis are observed corresponding to sharp structures in both fluxes. This continuous daily electron data provide unique input to the understanding of the charge sign dependence of cosmic rays over an 11-year solar cycle.

Development and validation of risk prediction models for stroke and mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes in northern China

BACKGROUND

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Risk models have been developed for predicting stroke and stroke-associated mortality among patients with T2DM. Here, we evaluated risk factors of stroke for individualized prevention measures in patients with T2DM in northern China.

METHODS

In the community-based Tianjin Chronic Disease Cohort study, 58,042 patients were enrolled between January 2014 and December 2019. We used multiple imputation (MI) to impute missing variables and univariate and multivariate Cox's proportional hazard regression to screen risk factors of stroke. Furthermore, we established and validated first-ever prediction models for stroke (Model 1 and Model 2) and death from stroke (Model 3) and evaluated their performance.

RESULTS

In the derivation and validation groups, the area under the curves (AUCs) of Models 1-3 was better at 5 years than at 8 years. The Harrell's C-index for all models was above 0.7. All models had good calibration, discrimination, and clinical net benefit. Sensitivity analysis using the MI dataset indicated that all models had good and stable prediction performance.

CONCLUSION

In this study, we developed and validated first-ever risk prediction models for stroke and death from stroke in patients with T2DM, with good discrimination and calibration observed in all models. Based on lifestyle, demographic characteristics, and laboratory examination, these models could provide multidimensional management and individualized risk assessment. However, the models developed here may only be applicable to Han Chinese.

Amyloidosis-related echo features and mortality in patients with multiple myeloma

Background/Introduction

Patients with multiple myeloma (MM) are at increased risk of developing AL amyloidosis. It was determined by screening fat pad and bone marrow biopsy that 38% MM patients had amyloidosis at time of diagnosis and the majority were asymptomatic (1). However, whether amyloidosis-related echo features in MM affect survival remains unknown (1, 2).

Purpose

The goals of our study are to: 1) characterize prevalence of amyloidosis-related echo features in patients with multiple myeloma, 2) investigate whether decrease in longitudinal strain affect survival outcomes.

Methods

Patients diagnosed with MM between Jan 1, 2000 and Dec 31, 2017 at our institution were identified through Clinical Looking Glass. Those with echo within 1 year after myeloma diagnosis and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) greater than 40% were included. Global longitudinal strain (GLS) and LVEF measurements were done using EchoGo (Ultromics, Oxford, UK). The average of GLS obtained from apical 4-chamber and apical 2-chamber views was used for analysis, with decreased GLS defined as absolute value less than 18%. Statistical analysis was conducted with STATA13, using Chi square test and Kruskal-Wallis for univariable analysis and Cox regression model for survival analysis.

Results

From a total cohort of 909 patients, 252 met inclusion criteria, of which 59 (23.4%) patients had decreased average GLS (see Table 1). Patients' mean age was 63±11 years, 44.8% were male and most were Black (42.7%) and the rest Hispanic (33.3%) and White (7.9%). Median follow up time was 4.25 years. The group with decreased GLS had lower percentage of females (22% vs 51.8%, p&lt;0.01), higher percentage of previous MI (11.9% vs 1.6%, p&lt;0.01) and more prior diagnosis of heart failure (20.3% vs 1.6%, p&lt;0.01).

Among patients with decreased GLS, five-year mortality rate was 63.3% compared to 46.0% in those with preserved GLS (p&lt;0.036). Median survival time was 3.9 years among those with reduced GLS and 4.3 years in those without (see Figure 1; p&lt;0.01). Reduced GLS correlated with decreased survival (HR 1.6, p=0.03) even after adjusting for demographic variables (age, gender, race), history of MI, history of CHF, Charlson comorbidity index, myeloma RISS stage, and LVEF (≥50% vs 40–50%).

Forty-seven (18.6%) patients had end diastolic inter-ventricular septum (IVSd) thickness ≥1.2cm. Median GLS in patients with increased IVSd thickness was 19% compared to 21% in those without (p=0.01). Nine patients had the apical sparing strain pattern for amyloidosis.

Total of 158 patients had bone marrow specimen stained with Congo-red with 7 (4.4%) testing positive. Median GLS was 19% in the group staining positive for Congo-red compared 21% in the group with negative stain (p=0.03).

Conclusions

Decrease in GLS on baseline echo correlates with increased mortality in patients with MM and may be due to subclinical cardiac amyloidosis.

[Progress of researches on albendazole for treatment of alveolar echinococcosis]

Alveolar echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus multilocularis infection, is a highly deadly zoonotic parasitic disease. As a benzimidazole compound, albendazole has a strong and broad-spectrum anti-parasitic action. For alveolar echinococcosis patients that are unwilling to receive surgical treatment, lose the timing for surgery, or are intolerant to surgery due to poor physical status, administration of albendazole may delay disease progression. Recently, a large number of advances have been achieved in experimental studies on alveolar echinococcosis. In order to increase the understanding of the therapeutic efficacy of albendazole for alveolar echinococcosis, this review summarizes the advances in albendazole treatment for alveolar echinococcosis, so as to provide insights into the clinical treatment of alveolar echinococcosis with albendazole.

Observation of WWW Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. Events from WWW production are observed with a significance of 8.0 standard deviations, where the expectation is 5.4 standard deviations. The inclusive WWW production cross section is measured to be 820±100 (stat)±80 (syst)  fb, approximately 2.6 standard deviations from the predicted cross section of 511±18  fb calculated at next-to-leading-order QCD and leading-order electroweak accuracy.

A detailed map of Higgs boson interactions by the ATLAS experiment ten years after the discovery

The standard model of particle physics1-4 describes the known fundamental particles and forces that make up our Universe, with the exception of gravity. One of the central features of the standard model is a field that permeates all of space and interacts with fundamental particles5-9. The quantum excitation of this field, known as the Higgs field, manifests itself as the Higgs boson, the only fundamental particle with no spin. In 2012, a particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson of the standard model was observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN10,11. Since then, more than 30 times as many Higgs bosons have been recorded by the ATLAS experiment, enabling much more precise measurements and new tests of the theory. Here, on the basis of this larger dataset, we combine an unprecedented number of production and decay processes of the Higgs boson to scrutinize its interactions with elementary particles. Interactions with gluons, photons, and W and Z bosons-the carriers of the strong, electromagnetic and weak forces-are studied in detail. Interactions with three third-generation matter particles (bottom (b) and top (t) quarks, and tau leptons (τ)) are well measured and indications of interactions with a second-generation particle (muons, μ) are emerging. These tests reveal that the Higgs boson discovered ten years ago is remarkably consistent with the predictions of the theory and provide stringent constraints on many models of new phenomena beyond the standard model.

Properties of Daily Helium Fluxes

We present the precision measurement of 2824 daily helium fluxes in cosmic rays from May 20, 2011 to October 29, 2019 in the rigidity interval from 1.71 to 100 GV based on 7.6×10^{8} helium nuclei collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The helium flux and the helium to proton flux ratio exhibit variations on multiple timescales. In nearly all the time intervals from 2014 to 2018, we observed recurrent helium flux variations with a period of 27 days. Shorter periods of 9 days and 13.5 days are observed in 2016. The strength of all three periodicities changes with time and rigidity. In the entire time period, we found that below ∼7  GV the helium flux exhibits larger time variations than the proton flux, and above ∼7  GV the helium to proton flux ratio is time independent. Remarkably, below 2.4 GV a hysteresis between the helium to proton flux ratio and the helium flux was observed at greater than the 7σ level. This shows that at low rigidity the modulation of the helium to proton flux ratio is different before and after the solar maximum in 2014.

A Nomogram for Predicting the Risk of Pulmonary Hypertension for Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Background

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening complication of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Timely diagnosis of PH in COPD patients is vital to achieve proper treatment; however, there is no algorithm to identify those at high risk. We aimed to develop a predictive model for PH in patients with COPD that provides individualized risk estimates.

Methods

A total of 527 patients with COPD who were admitted to our hospital between May 2019 and December 2020 were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Using echocardiographic results as a standard, patients were stratified into a moderate- or high-PH probability group and a low-PH probability group. They were randomly grouped into either the training set (n = 368 patients) or validation set (n = 159 patients) in a ratio of 7:3. We utilized the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model to select the feature variables. The characteristic variables selected in the LASSO regression were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression to construct the predictive model. The predictive model was displayed using a nomogram. We used the receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration curve, and clinical decision curve analysis (DCA) to evaluate model performance, and internal validation was assessed.

Results

The predictive factors included in the prediction model were Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage, emphysema, PaCO₂, NT-pro-BNP, red blood cell (RBC) distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD), and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR). The predictive model yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.770 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.719–0.820); in the internal validation, the AUC was 0.741 (95% CI, 0.659–0.823). The predictive model was well calibrated, and the DCA showed that the proposed nomogram had strong clinical applicability.

Conclusion

This study showed that a simple nomogram could be used to calculate the risk of PH in patients with COPD which can be useful for the individualized clinical management of COPD patients who may be occur with PH. Further studies need to be confirmed by larger sample sizes and validated in the stable COPD population.

[Analysis of clinical phenotype and genotype of Chinese children with disorders of sex development]

Objective: To explore the heterogeneity and correlation of clinical phenotypes and genotypes in children with disorders of sex development (DSD). Methods: A retrospective study of 1 235 patients with clinically proposed DSD in 36 pediatric medical institutions across the country from January 2017 to May 2021. After capturing 277 DSD-related candidate genes, second-generation sequencing was performed to analyzed the heterogeneity and correlation combined with clinical phenotypes. Results: Among 1 235 children with clinically proposed DSD, 980 were males and 255 were females of social gender at the time of initial diagnosis with the age ranged from 1 day of age to 17.92 years. A total of 443 children with pathogenic variants were detected through molecular genetic studies, with a positive detection rate of 35.9%. The most common clinical phenotypes were micropenis (455 cases), hypospadias (321 cases), and cryptorchidism (172 cases) and common mutations detected were in SRD5A2 gene (80 cases), AR gene (53 cases) and CYP21A2 gene (44 cases). Among them, the SRD5A2 mutation is the most common in children with simple micropenis and simple hypospadias, while the AMH mutation is the most common in children with simple cryptorchidism. Conclusions: The SRD5A2 mutation is the most common genetic variant in Chinese children with DSD, and micropenis, cryptorchidism, and hypospadias are the most common clinical phenotypes. Molecular diagnosis can provide clues about the biological basis of DSD, and can also guide clinicians to perform specific clinical examinations. Target sequence capture probes and next-generation sequencing technology can provide effective and economical genetic diagnosis for children with DSD.

Nup54-induced CARM1 nuclear importation promotes gastric cancer cell proliferation and tumorigenesis through transcriptional activation and methylation of Notch2

Gastric cancer (GC) has the fifth highest incidence globally, but its molecular mechanisms are not well understood. Here, we report that coactivator-associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1) is specifically highly expressed in gastric cancer and that its overexpression correlates with poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer. Nucleoporin 54 (Nup54) was identified as a CARM1-interacting protein that promoted CARM1 nuclear importation. In the nucleus, CARM1 cooperates with transcriptional factor EB (TFEB) to activate Notch2 transcription by inducing H3R17me2 of the Notch2 promoter but not H3R26me2. Additionally, the Notch2 intracellular domain (N2ICD) was identified as a CARM1 substrate. Methylation of N2ICD at R1786, R1838, and R2047 by CARM1 enhanced the binding between N2ICD and mastermind-like protein 1 (MAML1) and increased gastric cancer cell proliferation in vitro and tumor formation in vivo. Our findings reveal a molecular mechanism linking CARM1-mediated transcriptional activation of the Notch2 signaling pathway to Notch2 methylation in gastric cancer progression.

Periodicities in the Daily Proton Fluxes from 2011 to 2019 Measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station from 1 to 100 GV

We present the precision measurement of the daily proton fluxes in cosmic rays from May 20, 2011 to October 29, 2019 (a total of 2824 days or 114 Bartels rotations) in the rigidity interval from 1 to 100 GV based on 5.5×10^{9} protons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer aboard the International Space Station. The proton fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. From 2014 to 2018, we observed recurrent flux variations with a period of 27 days. Shorter periods of 9 days and 13.5 days are observed in 2016. The strength of all three periodicities changes with time and rigidity. The rigidity dependence of the 27-day periodicity is different from the rigidity dependences of 9-day and 13.5-day periods. Unexpectedly, the strength of 9-day and 13.5-day periodicities increases with increasing rigidities up to ∼10  GV and ∼20  GV, respectively. Then the strength of the periodicities decreases with increasing rigidity up to 100 GV.

Comparison of invasive intubation and noninvasive mechanical ventilation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome

Objective

The concurrence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is defined as overlap syndrome (OS), but investigations into predictors of OS in patients with COPD remain limited. Here, potential markers of OS in patients with COPD were investigated, and results of intubation were compared between patients with COPD only or OS.

Methods

This retrospective study included patients with COPD who were divided according to OS diagnosis: COPD only (COPD group) or OS (OS group).

Results

Among 206 patients with COPD, 120 were diagnosed with OS. Mean body mass index (BMI) was significantly higher in the OS versus COPD group (28.95 ± 2.96 versus 23.84 ± 4.06, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses revealed that BMI was associated with OS (area under the curve, 0.835). The rate of invasive intubation within 48 h was lower in the OS versus COPD group (9.2% versus 20.9%, respectively), and the duration of noninvasive ventilation was longer in the OS versus COPD group.

Conclusions

BMI may be a predictor of OS in patients with COPD. The duration of noninvasive ventilation was longer in patients with OS than in patients with COPD alone.

[Assessment of heart's changes of elite Chinese male weightlifter by speckle tracking echocardiography]

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the changes of heart structure and function in elite Chinese weightlifters by spot tracking technique.

METHODS

Chinese elite male weightlifters (weightlifter group, n=16) and age-matched healthy men (control group, n=16) were included as subjects. Transthoracic echocardiography and speckle-tracking automatic functional imaging were used for two-dimensional myocardial strain measurements.

RESULTS

The thickness of septum and left ventricular (LV) posterior wall and the myocardial mass index of LV were all higher than those of the control group [(9.3±1.3) mm vs. (8.0±0.4) mm, (9.2±0.8) mm vs. (8.0±0.8) mm, (77.8±12.8) g/m² vs. (67.8±11.2) g/m², all P < 0.05]. Although the LV ejection fraction (LVEF) and global long axis strain value (LVGLS) were not significantly different from those in the control group, the LV mean Sm and Em reflecting the systolic and diastolic functions of the LV were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Further myocardial strain analysis showed that the absolute value of the long axial strain of the basal anteroseptal and mid-inferoseptal segments of the weightlifters were significantly lower than those of the control group [|(-15.1±4.2)%|vs.|(-18.7±3.0)%|, |(-18.8±2.6)%|vs.|(-21.3±2.8)%|, all P < 0.05]. There was no significant difference in other segments. The athletes were divided into two groups according to their best performance in the National Youth Games. The athletes were divided into two sub-groups according to their performance in the National Youth Games. The thickness of the septum in the sub-group with better performance (who ranked the 1^st to 8^th) was larger [(10.2±1.1) mm vs. (8.5±1.0) mm, P < 0.05], and the absolute value of the long-axis strain in the mid-inferoseptal segment was lower [|(-17.1±2.1)%|vs.|(-20.4±2.1)%|, P < 0.05].

CONCLUSION

The thickening of septum is more obvious in the excellent weightlifters, accompanied by the decrease of myocardial systolic function. The speckle-tracking technique of echocardiography can identify the changes of the heart structure and function of elite athletes at an early stage, which may provide a basis for sports medicine supervision and the selection of excellent talents.

Prognostic value of PCSK9 Levels in Non-ST elevation myocardial infarction patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention

Background

The role of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) in predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in Non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients is still an open question and the PCSK9 concentration of clinical usefulness remains unknown in guiding treatment.

Purpose

To explore the role of PCSK9 in predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in Non-ST elevation myocardial infarction patients.

Methods

272 patients with NSTEMI were included in our study, all patients received PCI therapy after admission. Patients were followed up for 1 year and MACEs were recored. Their baseline plasma PCSK9 levels were determined by ELISA. Patients were divided into high, medium and low PCSK9 groups and the associations of PCSK9 with other biomarkers and MACEs were evaluated.

Results

The results showed that PCSK9 levels was related to levels of lipoproteins, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (r=0.162, P=0.008), platelet volume distribution width (r=0.299, P&lt;0.001) and D-dimer (r=0.285, P&lt;0.001). And the concentrations of PCSK9 was greater higher in people with MACEs (137.2ng/ml vs 243.6ng/ml) (Fig. 1A). The Kaplan-Meier curves showed patients with high PCSK9 level had lower event-free survival rate (Fig. 1B). Survival analysis indicated high level of PCSK9 predicted MACEs independently after adjusted for traditional cardiovascular risk factors and GRACE score (HR=2.646, 95CI%: 1.047–6.686, P=0.027) (Fig. 1C, Fig. 2). Subgroup analysis demonstrated the prognostic value of high PCSK9 level was greater for patients classified by the GRACE score as high risk (Fig. 1D).

Conclusions

In a NSTEMI setting, the concentration of PCSK9 is associated with hypercoagulability and hyper-inflammation. High levels of PCSK9 independently predict future MACEs in NSTEMI patients, particularly those classified by the GRACE score as high risk.

Relationship between Lactobacillus and prognosis of acute myocardial infarction patients treated by percutaneous coronary intervention and its possible mechanism

Background

Our previous study had found that the abundance of Lactobacillaceae in stool of acute coronary syndrome patients was significantly decreased. Experiments have confirmed that Lactobacillus has the effects of anti-inflammation, regulating blood lipids and improving cardiac injury after myocardial infarction.

Purpose

To explore the relationship between Lactobacillus and prognosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients treated by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and its possible mechanism.

Methods

Patients with AMI who received emergency PCI from July 2017 to December 2018 in department of CCU were enrolled.Stool and blood samples were collected from all patients. The fecal 16S rDNA gene sequencing data from subjects were analyzed and subjects were categorized into Low, Medium and High level groups according to stool Lactobacillus measurements. The primary endpoints were major adverse cardiac events (MACE). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression were used to analyze the relationship between Lactobacillus and prognosis. Kaplan-Meier survival curve was used to characterize the association between the risk of MACE and Lactobacillus levels. Spearman correlation analysis and trend test were used to assess the relationship between Lactobacillus and Clinical index.

Results

A total of 254 patients were included in the analysis. The age was 65.90±11.56 years old,and 152 (59.84%) were male. The follow-up time was 652 (548.25, 753) days. Multivariate Cox regression showed that patients with Lactobacillus &gt;7.1 copies/g presented lower risk of MACE (HR=0.179, 95% CI 0.076–0.422, P&lt;0.001), compared to patients with Lactobacillus ≤3.6 copies/g.This difference was statistically significant in STEMI (HR=0.210, 95% CI 0.082–0.542, P=0.001). Subgroup analysis indicated that Lactobacillus was a protective factor,whereas the value was more evident for male smokers over 60 years old and whose BNP over 1000 pg/mL.Spearman correlation analysis showed that Lactobacillus was negatively correlated with WBC, NEUT, hs-CRP, TNT, CK, CK-MB and BNP, while positively correlated with LVEF. With the increasing of Lactobacillus, WBC, NEUT, hs-CRP, TNT, CK, CK-MB and BNP showed a downward trend, while LVEF had an upward trend.

Conclusion

Lactobacillus can significantly reduce the risk of MACE in STEMI patients treated by PCI, especially for male smokers over 60 years old. The underlying mechanism may be related to the fact that Lactobacillus can reduce inflammatory reaction, lessen cardiac injury and improve cardiac function.

What is an appropriate caesarean delivery rate for China: a multicentre survey

Objective

To assess the current status of caesarean delivery (CD) in China, propose reference CD rates for China overall, and by regions, investigate the main indications for CDs and identify possible areas for safe reduction.

Design

A multicentre cross‐sectional study.

Setting

A total of 94 hospitals across 23 provinces in China.

Population

A total of 73 977 randomly selected deliveries.

Methods

We used a modified Robson classification to characterise CDs in subgroups and by regions, and the World Health Organization (WHO) C‐Model to calculate reference CD rates.

Main outcome measures

CD rates in China.

Results

In 2015–2016, the overall CD rate in China was 38.9% (95% CI 38.6–39.3%). Considering the obstetric characteristics of the population, the multivariable model‐based reference CD rate was estimated at 28.5% (95% CI 28.3–28.8%). Accordingly, an absolute reduction of 10.4% (or 26.7% relative reduction) may be considered. The CD rate varied substantially by region. Previous CD was the most common indication in all regions, accounting for 38.2% of all CDs, followed by maternal request (9.8%), labour dystocia (8.3%), fetal distress (7.7%) and malpresentation (7.6%). Overall, 12.7% of women had prelabour CDs, contributing to 32.8% of the total CDs.

Conclusions

Nearly 39% of births were delivered by caesarean in China but a reduction of this rate by a quarter may be considered attainable. Repeat CD contributed more than one‐third of the total CDs. Given the large variation in maternal characteristics, region‐specific or even hospital‐specific reference CD rates are needed for precision management of CD.

[Risk factors analysis of central venous catheter-related thrombosis in critically ill patients and development of nomogram prediction model]

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the risk factors of central venous catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) in critically ill patients and develop the model of a nomogram.

METHODS

A prospective investigation study was conducted on 385 critically ill patients who received central venous catheters during hospitalization in Hengshui People's Hospital from May 2018 to March 2021. Color Doppler ultrasonography was performed daily after catheterization. Patients were divided into thrombosis group and non-thrombosis group according to whether CRT was formed. The patient's gender, age, body mass index (BMI), acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) score, complications, existing tumor, D-dimer level on the 3rd day after catheterization, maximum velocity of right internal jugular vein on the 3rd day after catheterization, mechanical ventilation time, and catheter indwelling time were recorded, and the differences of above indexes between the two groups were compared. Multivariate Logistic regression was performed on the influencing factors with statistical differences between the two groups to establish the nomogram prediction. The receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC curve) and calibration curve were used to evaluate the predictive power of the model.

RESULTS

The incidence of central venous CRT in critically ill patients was 16.1% (62/385). Compared with non-thrombosis patients, the thrombosis group patients had higher APACHE II score, the proportion of existing tumor, and D-dimer level on the 3rd day after catheterization [APACHE II score: 17 (15, 19) vs. 15 (12, 18), the proportion of existing tumor: 51.6% (32/62) vs. 35.3% (114/323), D-dimer (mg/L): 0.84 (0.64, 0.94) vs. 0.57 (0.44, 0.76), all P < 0.05], the maximum flow rate of right internal jugular vein was slower on the 3rd day after catheterization [cm/s: 14 (13, 15) vs. 16 (14, 18), P < 0.05]. Univariate analysis showed that high APACHE II score, critical patients with existing tumor, high D-dimer level on the 3rd day after catheterization, and slow maximum flow rate of right internal jugular vein on the 3rd day after catheterization were more likely to develop central venous CRT. Further multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that high APACHE II score, existing tumor, high D-dimer level on the 3rd day after catheterization and slow maximum flow rate of right internal jugular vein on the 3rd day after catheterization were independent risk factors for central venous CRT in critical patients [odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were 0.876 (0.801-0.957), 0.482 (0.259-0.895), 0.039 (0.011-0.139), 1.401 (1.218-1.611), and P values were 0.003, 0.021, < 0.001, < 0.001, respectively]. According to the results of multivariate analysis, the prediction model of the nomogram was constructed. The area under ROC curve (AUC) was 0.820, 95%CI was 0.767-0.872, P < 0.001. The calibration curve showed that the prediction probability of central venous CRT nomogram model in critically ill patients had good consistency with the actual occurrence probability.

CONCLUSIONS

Existing tumor, high APACHE II score, elevated D-dimer on the 3rd day after catheterization, and decreased maximum velocity of right internal jugular vein on the 3rd day after catheterization are independent risk factors for central venous CRT in critical patients. The prediction model based on the proposed model has good clinical efficacy.

[Value of plasma SEPTIN9 methylation detection for diagnosis and predicting radiosensitivity of esophageal carcinoma]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the value of plasma mSEPT9 detection in the diagnosis and prediction of radiosensitivity of esophageal carcinoma.

METHODS

This study was conducted in 72 patients with esophageal cancer who received radical radiotherapy in the Department of Radiotherapy of First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College between January, 2019 and December, 2020.Plasma mSEPT9 of the patients were examined with PCR before and after radiotherapy, with 20 healthy subjects from the physical examination center as the controls.The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to assess the value of mSEPT9 in diagnosis of esophageal cancer, and the correlation between mSEPT9 and clinicopathological characteristics of the patients was analyzed.According to their response to radiotherapy, the patients were divided into radiosensitive group and insensitive group, and their plasma mSEPT9 levels were compared before radiotherapy.All the patients were observed for dynamic changes of mSEPT9 levels after radiotherapy to analyze the association of mSEPT9 variation with radiosensitivity of the tumors.

RESULTS

The sensitivity and specificity of mSEPT9 for the diagnosis of esophageal carcinoma were 62.5% and 100%, respectively, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.813.Plasma mSEPT9 level was correlated with lymph node metastasis and clinical stages of esophageal carcinoma (P < 0.05), but not with gender, age, invasion site, tumor length, degree of differentiation, or depth of invasion (P > 0.05).The radiosensitive patients had a significantly lower positivity rate for mSEPT9 than the insensitive patients before radiotherapy(53.06% vs 82.61%, P=0.016).In the 72 patients, the positivity rate for mSEPT9 decreased significantly after radiotherapy (30.56% vs 62.5%, P < 0.001); the positivity rate was significantly lowered after radiotherapy in the radiosensitive group (14.29% vs 53.06%, P < 0.001), but the reduction was not significant in the insensitive group (65.22% vs 82.61%, P=0.125).

CONCLUSION

Detection of plasma mSEPT9 level is helpful for diagnosis and prediction of radiosensitivity of esophageal carcinoma.

Relationship between end-tidal carbon dioxide and arterial carbon dioxide in critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation: A cross-sectional study

So far, only a few studies have examined and confirmed the correlation between end-expiratory carbon dioxide partial pressure (PETCO2) and arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) during invasive mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients. This study aimed to observe the correlation between PaCO2 and PETCO2 in patients on invasive mechanical ventilation.This was a cross-sectional study of adult patients on invasive mechanical ventilation enrolled between June 2018 and March 2019. Patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation underwent one of the following mechanical ventilation modes: assisted/controlled ventilation, synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation, and spontaneous breathing. Subsequently, the difference and correlation between PETCO2 and PaCO2 were analyzed.A total of 184 patients with 298 pairs of PETCO2-PaCO2 data were included in the analysis. Without distinguishing the ventilator mode, there was significant positive correlation between PETCO2 and PaCO2. In different ventilator modes, the correlation coefficient was 0.81 for synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation, 0.47 for assisted/controlled ventilation, and 0.55 for spontaneous breathing, respectively. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (r = 0.80), multiple trauma (r = 0.64), severe pneumonia (r = 0.60), gastrointestinal surgery (r = 0.57), and cerebrovascular diseases (r = 0.53), PETCO2 and PaCO2 were positively correlated. For oxygenation index <200 mm Hg, correlation coefficient r = 0.69, P < .001; oxygenation index ≥200, r = 0.73, P < .001. Under different oxygenation indexes, there was no statistically significant difference between the 2 correlation coefficients. Among 116 pairs of data with oxygenation index <200 mm Hg, the difference of PaCO2-PETCO2 ≥10 mm Hg was found in 25 pairs (21.55%); in 182 pairs of data with oxygenation index ≥200 mm Hg, the difference of PaCO2-PETCO2 ≥10 mm Hg was found in 26 pairsIn patients on invasive mechanical ventilation, there was a good correlation between PETCO2 and PaCO2 in different ventilator modes, different disease types, and different oxygenation indexes, especially in synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation mode and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients.

Properties of a New Group of Cosmic Nuclei: Results from the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on Sodium, Aluminum, and Nitrogen

We report the properties of sodium (Na) and aluminum (Al) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.46 million sodium and 0.51 million aluminum nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. We found that Na and Al, together with nitrogen (N), belong to a distinct cosmic ray group. In this group, we observe that, similar to the N flux, both the Na flux and Al flux are well described by the sums of a primary cosmic ray component (proportional to the silicon flux) and a secondary cosmic ray component (proportional to the fluorine flux). The fraction of the primary component increases with rigidity for the N, Na, and Al fluxes and becomes dominant at the highest rigidities. The Na/Si and Al/Si abundance ratios at the source, 0.036±0.003 for Na/Si and 0.103±0.004 for Al/Si, are determined independent of cosmic ray propagation.

[Aryl hydrocarbon receptor modulates airway inflammation in mice with cockroach allergen-induced asthma by regulating Th17/Treg differentiation]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate whether aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) modulates cockroach allergen (CRE)-induced asthma by regulating Th17/Treg differentiation.

OBJECTIVE

Mouse models of CRE-induced asthma established by sensitizing and challenging the mice with CRE were randomized into asthma model group, AhR agonist group treated with TCDD (10 μg/ kg), and AhR antagonist group treated with TCDD and CH223191 (10 mg/kg) (n=5), with 5 mice without CRE challenge as the control group. The expressions of AhR, Cyp1a1 and Cyp1b1 mRNA in the lung tissues of the mice were detected using RT-PCR, and pulmonary inflammation was evaluated with immumohistochemical staining. The expressions of inflammatory cytokines in the lungs were detected using ELISA, and the expression of Treg in the lung tissues and pulmonary lymph nodes was analyzed with flow cytometry.

OBJECTIVE

Both TCDD and CH223191 were capable of modulating pulmonary expressions of AhR and its downstream genes Cyp1a1 and Cyp1b1 in asthmatic mice (P < 0.002). TCDD treatment significantly decreased inflammatory cells and mucus production in the lungs of asthmatic mice, and BALFs from TCDD-treated mice with CRE challenge contained lowered levels of the proinflammatory factors including IL-4, IL-13 and IL-17A (P < 0.001) but increased anti-inflammatory factors including IL-10, IL-22 and TGF-β1 (P < 0.001). All these changes were significantly reversed by treatment with CH223191 to the levels comparable with those in the asthma model group (P>0.05). More importantly, TCDD treatment significantly increased the number of Tregs cells and FOXP3 expression and lowered RORγt mRNA expression in the lungs and pulmonary lymph nodes in asthmatic mice (P < 0.001); inhibition of AhR with CH223191, as compared with TCDD, significantly decreased the expression of CD4⁺CD25⁺Foxp3⁺Treg cells in the lungs and pulmonary lymph nodes and the expression of FOXP3 mRNA in lymphocytes and increased RORγt mRNA expression (P < 0.001) to the levels comparable with those in asthma model group (P>0.05).

Application of intra-abdominal pressure monitoring in early enteral nutrition after abdominal surgery

OBJECTIVE

To explore the effect of intra-abdominal pressure monitoring in early enteral nutrition therapy after abdominal surgery.

METHODS

164 patients who underwent elective abdominal surgery in our hospital from January 2019 to January 2020 were selected and divided into an observation group and a control group according to the random number table method, with 82 cases in each group. On the basis of conventional enteral nutrition nursing, the control group received conventional gastric residual monitoring, and the observation group received intra-abdominal pressure monitoring. The clinical treatment effect, intra-abdominal pressure, incidence of intra-abdominal hypertension, APACHE-II score, and enteral nutrition tolerance were compared. Correlation of early enteral nutrition intolerance and intra-abdominal pressure was analyzed in the ROC curve.

RESULTS

The time of abdominal pain relief, adjusted enteral nutrition, and hospitalization were significantly shorter in the observation group (P < 0.05). The intra-abdominal pressure, intra-abdominal hypertension rate, and APACHE-II scores were comparable before treatment (P > 0.05) and all were significantly reduced after treatment in the two groups (P < 0.05). After treatment, the above items were significantly lower in the observation group (P < 0.05). The enteral nutrition's tolerance level of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the early enteral nutrition tolerance of patients after abdominal surgery was correlated with the level of intra-abdominal pressure (P < 0.05). The ROC reveled that the baseline level of intra-abdominal pressure and the average level of intra-abdominal pressure 3 days before enteral nutrition were of diagnostic values in predicting the intolerance during enteral nutrition.

CONCLUSION

Intraperitoneal pressure monitoring can significantly improve patients' symptoms, and it should be accurately measured for doctors to make timely diagnoses and provide proper treatments.

The applied research on the intra-abdominal pressure monitoring in early enteral nutrition in patients with severe pneumonia

OBJECTIVE

To explore the applied value of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) monitoring in early enteral nutrition (EEN) in patients with severe pneumonia.

METHODS

96 patients with severe pneumonia who underwent EEN treatment in our hospital from June 2017 to June 2019 were selected. According to the random number table method, they were divided into a control group (48 patients) and an observation group (48 patients). The control group was treated using the conventional EN method, and the observation group was treated using the intra-abdominal pressure monitoring besides the conventional EN method. The incidence of EN intolerance, the acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APECHEll) scores, the positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) value, mechanical ventilation time, EN implementation days, length of stay in ICU, the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia, mortality, and the incidence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome were compared between the two groups.

RESULTS

Compared with the control group, the incidence of EEN intolerance in the observation group was significantly reduced. The results of univariate analysis showed that, in the EN intolerance group, the IAP, the PEEP value and APACHEII scores after 3 days of EEN implementation were higher than the EEN tolerance group, indicating a influencing factor of EEN intolerance (P<0.05). The results of multivariate analysis showed that IAP value was a risk factor for EEN intolerance (P<0.05). The ROC curve analysis result for IAP to predict EEN tolerance showed that the area under the curve for IAP value to predict EN tolerance was 0.856, the optimal cut-off value was 10.73 mmHg, the sensitivity was 95.10%, and the specificity was 89.60%.

CONCLUSION

The intra-abdominal pressure monitoring during the EEN in patients with severe pneumonia is a preferred method to guide the patients' EEN.

The predictive value of serum procalcitonin for non-invasive positive pressure ventilation in the patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

This study aimed to estimate the value of serum procalcitonin (PCT) for non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) prediction in the patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD).A total of 220 AECOPD patients were divided into NIPPV group (n = 121) and control group (routine treatment, n = 99) based on the routine standards and physicians' experience. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the independent factors for NIPPV treatment. Additionally, the predictive values of the factors were measured through receiver operation characteristic (ROC) curve.NIPPV group and control group showed significant differences in respiratory rate (RR), PaO2, PaCO2, pH, oxygenation index, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), neutrophil, CRP (C-reaction protein), and PCT (P < .05 for all). PCT, CRP, PaCO2, RR, and neutrophil were independently correlated with NIPPV treatment in AECOPD. ROC curve showed that PCT had superior predictive value, with AUC of 0.899, the sensitivity of 86%, and the specificity of 91.9%. The cut-off value of serum PCT for NIPPV prediction was 88.50 ng/l.AECOPD patients who require NIPPV treatment frequently have high levels of PCT, CRP, PaCO2, RR and neutrophil. Serum PCT may be employed as an indicator for NIPPV treatment in AECOPD patients.

Circ_001680 stimulates glioma progression with the involvement of miR-186-5p

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to explore the influences of circ_001680 on glioma proliferation and metastasis, and the underlying mechanism.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Circ_001680 levels in 40 pairs of glioma and normal tissues were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The relationship between circ_001680 level and clinical indicators in glioma patients was analyzed. After knockdown of circ_001680 in U251 and U87 cells by transfection of sh-circ_001680, changes in proliferative, migratory and invasive abilities were assessed by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), transwell and wound healing assay, respectively. The binding relationship between circ_001680 and miR-186-5p was predicted by online bioinformatics tools and detected by Dual-Luciferase reporter assay. In addition, their synergistic regulations on glioma progression were explored by rescue experiments.

RESULTS

Circ_001680 was highly expressed in glioma tissues than normal ones. Incidences of lymphatic metastasis and distant metastasis were higher in glioma patients expressing higher level of circ_001680 than those with a lower level. Cell function experiments uncovered that knockdown of circ_001680 inhibited proliferative and metastatic abilities in U251 and U87 cells. MiR-186-5p was downregulated in glioma tissues and negatively correlated to that of circ_001680. Knockdown of miR-186-5p could abolish the inhibitory effects of silenced circ_001680 on glioma progression.

CONCLUSIONS

Circ_001680 stimulates proliferative and metastatic abilities in glioma by negatively regulating miR-186-5p level. High level of circ_001680 is closely linked to lymphatic metastasis, distant metastasis and poor prognosis in glioma patients.
