Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a global pandemic. All people including children are generally susceptible to COVID-19, but the condition is relatively mild for children. The diagnosis of COVID-19 is largely based on the epidemiological evidence and clinical manifestations, and confirmed by positive detection of virus nucleic acid in respiratory samples. The main symptoms of COVID-19 in children are fever and cough; the total number of white blood cell count is usually normal or decreased; the chest imaging is characterized by interstitial pneumonia, which is similar to other respiratory virus infections and Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections. Early identification, early isolation, early diagnosis and early treatment are important for clinical management. The treatment of mild or moderate type of child COVID-19 is mainly symptomatic. For severe and critical ill cases, the oxygen therapy, antiviral drugs, antibacterial drugs, glucocorticoids, mechanical ventilation or even extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) may be adopted, and the treatment plan should be adjusted timely through multi-disciplinary cooperation.

[Research progress on early identification of severe adenovirus pneumonia in children]. Zhejiang Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban 2019; 48:567-572. Abstract
Severe adenovirus pneumonia has a high mortality and incidence of sequelae. Fever and cough are the main symptoms of children's severe adenovirus pneumonia, but such clinical manifestations are lack of specificity. For children with persistent high fever who are in the epidemic age and season, the adenovirus etiology detection, blood routine, cytokines, T cell subsets and imaging examinations are suggested. Children with early manifestations of infiltration of lung segment and lobar parenchyma, obvious emphysema, interstitial pneumonia or a large amount of pleural effusion should be alerted to have severe adenovirus pneumonia. This article reviews the epidemiological characteristics and risk factors of adenovirus pneumonia in different seasons, regions and serology, and the laboratory findings and imaging features of severe adenovirus pneumonia, which would be helpful for the early identification of the disease.

Melatonin Attenuates Chronic Cough Mediated by Oxidative Stress via Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin-2 in Guinea Pigs Exposed to Particulate Matter 2.5. Physiol Res 2018; 67:293-305. [DOI: 10.33549/physiolres.933654] [Citation(s) in RCA: 18] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 01/01/2023] Open
Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of melatonin on oxidative stress, the expression of transient receptor potential melastatin-2 (TRPM2) in guinea pig brains, and the influence of melatonin on oxidative stress in lungs and airway inflammation induced by particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5). A particle suspension (0.1 g/ml) was nasally administered to the guinea pigs to prepare a PM2.5 exposure model. Cough frequency and cough incubation period were determined through RM6240B biological signal collection and disposal system. Oxidative stress markers, including malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), in the medulla oblongata were examined through spectrophotometer. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected in the hypoglossal nucleus, cuneate nucleus, Botzinger complex, dorsal vagal complex, and airway through dihydroethidium fluorescence. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and substance P expression via immunohistochemistry revealed the inflammatory levels in the airway. TRPM2 was observed in the medulla oblongata through immunofluorescence and Western blot. The ultrastructure of the blood-brain barrier and neuronal mitochondria was determined by using a transmission electron microscope. Our study suggests that melatonin treatment decreased PM2.5-induced oxidative stress level in the brains and lungs and relieved airway inflammation and chronic cough. TRPM2 might participate in oxidative stress in the cough center by regulating cough.

Vagotomy Decreases the Neuronal Activities of Medulla Oblongata and Alleviates Neurogenic Inflammation of Airways Induced by Repeated Intra-Esophageal Instillation of HCl in Guinea Pigs. Physiol Res 2017; 66:1021-1028. [DOI: 10.33549/physiolres.933574] [Citation(s) in RCA: 10] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 02/07/2023] Open
Abstract
Neuronal activity in the medulla oblongata and neurogenic inflammation of airways were investigated in a guinea pig model induced by repeated intra-esophageal instillation of hydrochloric acid (HCl) after vagotomy. Unilateral vagotomy was performed in the vagotomy group, while a sham-operation was performed in the sham group. Operation was not conducted in sham control group. Airway inflammation was observed with hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. C-fos protein was measured by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Western blot (WB). Substance P was examined by IHC and enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA). Airway microvascular permeability was detected by evans blue dye (EBD) fluorescence. Inflammation of airway was observed in the trachea and bronchi after chronic HCl perfusion into the lower esophagus, and was alleviated after unilateral vagotomy. C-fos expression in the medulla oblongata was lower in the vagotomy group compared to the sham control and sham groups. Substance P-like immunoreactivity (SP-li), concentration and microvascular leakage in airway were lower in the vagotomy group than that in the other groups. Our results suggest that vagotomy improved neurogenic inflammation of airways and decreased neuronal activities, the afferent nerves and neurons in medulla oblongata may be involved in neurogenic inflammation of airways mediated by esophageal-bronchial reflex.

Electromigration dispersion in a capillary in the presence of electro-osmotic flow. JOURNAL OF FLUID MECHANICS 2012; 697:436-454. Abstract
The differential migration of ions in an applied electric field is the basis for separation of chemical species by capillary electrophoresis. Axial diffusion of the concentration peak limits the separation efficiency. Electromigration dispersion is observed when the concentration of sample ions is comparable to that of the background ions. Under such conditions, the local electrical conductivity is significantly altered in the sample zone making the electric field, and therefore, the ion migration velocity concentration dependent. The resulting nonlinear wave exhibits shock like features, and, under certain simplifying assumptions, is described by Burgers' equation (S. Ghosal and Z. Chen Bull. Math. Biol. 201072, pg. 2047). In this paper, we consider the more general situation where the walls of the separation channel may have a non-zero zeta potential and are therefore able to sustain an electro-osmotic bulk flow. The main result is a one dimensional nonlinear advection diffusion equation for the area averaged concentration. This homogenized equation accounts for the Taylor-Aris dispersion resulting from the variation in the electro-osmotic slip velocity along the wall. It is shown that in a certain range of parameters, the electro-osmotic flow can actually reduce the total dispersion by delaying the formation of a concentration shock. However, if the electro-osmotic flow is sufficiently high, the total dispersion is increased because of the Taylor-Aris contribution.
