MR Image Fusion-Based Parotid Gland Tumor Detection

The differentiation of benign and malignant parotid gland tumors is of major significance as it directly affects the treatment process. In addition, it is also a vital task in terms of early and accurate diagnosis of parotid gland tumors and the determination of treatment planning accordingly. As in other diseases, the differentiation of tumor types involves several challenging, time-consuming, and laborious processes. In the study, Magnetic Resonance (MR) images of 114 patients with parotid gland tumors are used for training and testing purposes by Image Fusion (IF). After the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC), Contrast-enhanced T1-w (T1C-w), and T2-w sequences are cropped, IF (ADC, T1C-w), IF (ADC, T2-w), IF (T1C-w, T2-w), and IF (ADC, T1C-w, T2-w) datasets are obtained for different combinations of these sequences using a two-dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT)-based fusion technique. For each of these four datasets, ResNet18, GoogLeNet, and DenseNet-201 architectures are trained separately, and thus, 12 models are obtained in the study. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) application that contains the most successful of these trained architectures for each data is also designed to support the users. The designed GUI application not only allows the fusing of different sequence images but also predicts whether the label of the fused image is benign or malignant. The results show that the DenseNet-201 models for IF (ADC, T1C-w), IF (ADC, T2-w), and IF (ADC, T1C-w, T2-w) are better than the others, with accuracies of 95.45%, 95.96%, and 92.93%, respectively. It is also noted in the study that the most successful model for IF (T1C-w, T2-w) is ResNet18, and its accuracy is equal to 94.95%.

The relationship between physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of Surk cheese

In this study, the relationship between the physicochemical and microbiological properties of the Surk cheese was investigated through the analysis of dry matter (D.M.), ash, protein, salt, acidity, pH and enumeration of the total mesophyll aerobic bacteria (TMAB), yeast-mold, presumptive lactobacilli and lactococci. Surk samples were obtained randomly from 36 different local dairy shops in Antakya province of Turkey. The average values of the dry matter, ash, protein, fat, and salt, acidity and pH analysis were 44.4%, 9.09%, 17.5%, 17.0%, 8.08%, 0.916% and 4.17, respectively. The average values for TMAB, yeast mold, presumptive lactobacilli and lactococci enumeration in the microbiological analysis were found to be 6.23, 4.09, 6.04, and 3.42 log cfu/g, respectively. Based on the statistical analysis, Surk samples were divided into 3 groups in terms of salt content (3-6, 6-9 and > 9%). Then, the physicochemical and microbiological properties of Surk samples were evaluated according to these groups. This study suggests that besides the different methods to produce Surk cheese as followed by the different manufacturers, the amount of salt added to Surk cheese affects its microbiological and physicochemical characteristics.

Comparisons of Auditory and Vestibular Functions After Septorhinoplasty Performed with the Micro-compass Saw Technique and the Classical Technique

AIM

To evaluate hearing and labyrinth functions following different osteotomy types (micro-compass saw, osteotome, and no osteotomy) performed in septorhinoplasty operations.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

The study included 74 patients operated between January 2020 and March 2022, separated into 3 groups: Group 1: 24 patients (16 females and 8 males): osteotome was used for the osteotomy; Group 2: 24 patients (12 females and 12 males): micro-saw was used for osteotomy; and Group 3: 26 patients (17 females and 9 males): open technique septoplasty with no osteotomy. At 1 day before and 1 week after the operation, all the patients underwent audiological examination, tympanometry, vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (c-VEMP), video head impulse test (v-HIT), videonystagmography (VNG), and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) tests.

RESULTS

In the c-VEMP tests, significant differences were determined between the groups in respect of N1, P1, and N1-P1 latencies and N1-P1 amplitudes before and after the operation. In the v-HIT test, the change in right-side posterior gain postoperatively was statistically significant in the micro-saw group (p<0.05). The postoperative right lateral canal values were determined to be statistically significantly increased in the micro-saw group compared to the osteotome group (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

This is the only study in the literature to have determined vestibular effects with the evaluation of such a wide range of techniques. Previous studies in the literature have found no effect of osteotomy technique on the balance and hearing systems. The results of this study demonstrated that the preoperative and postoperative difference between the osteotomy techniques had an effect on the balance system. The change in the balance tests following an operation with classic osteotomy shows a greater predisposition to benign positional vertigo. In this sense, the micro-saw can be considered safer.
