Clinical Outcomes Following Incomplete Arthroscopic Iliotibial Band Release for External Snapping Hip Syndrome: An Observational Study

OBJECTIVES

Arthroscopic treatment is indicated for external snapping hip (ESH) syndrome in patients refractory to conservative treatment, but snapping does not disappear completely in some case. No previous studies have described the clinical course of ESH syndrome in patients who presented with persistent snapping after an arthroscopic procedure. We demonstrated the clinical outcomes following an incomplete arthroscopic iliotibial band (ITB) release for ESH syndrome.

METHODS

This retrospective observational study was performed at two teaching hospitals between October 2015 and December 2021. We reviewed the data of 33 patients (34 hips) aged ≥18 years, diagnosed with ESH syndrome, who were treated with arthroscopic ITB release. Patients who presented with persistent snapping despite sufficient arthroscopic ITB release following systematic order were defined as having an incomplete release. We collected the data for recurrent symptomatic snapping hip as the primary outcome after a minimum 2-year follow-up. The visual analogue scale (VAS) and modified Harris hip (mHHS) scores were measured as secondary outcome.

RESULTS

"Incomplete release" was identified in three of the 34 hips (8.9%). Cases of recurrent symptomatic snapping or conversion to open surgery were not observed. The symptoms of residual snapping spontaneously disappeared in all cases following routine postoperative rehabilitation within a 3-month follow-up period. The VAS (4 ± 1) and mHHS (17 ± 6) scores of all the patients improved.

CONCLUSION

When refractory ESH syndrome is identified during arthroscopic surgery, appropriate ITB release and removal of the major lesion causing snapping are expected to lead to resolution of residual symptoms without conversion to open surgery.

Ortho-Carborane Decorated Multi-Resonance TADF Emitters: Preserving Local Excited State and High Efficiency in OLEDs

A novel class of o-carboranyl luminophores, 2CB-BuDABNA (1) and 3CB-BuDABNA (2) is reported, in which o-carborane moieties are incorporated at the periphery of the B,N-doped multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) core. Both compounds maintain the inherent local emission characteristics of their MR-emitting core, exhibiting intense MR-TADF with high photoluminescence quantum yields in toluene and rigid states. In contrast, the presence of the dark lowest-energy charge transfer state, induced by cage rotation in THF, is suggested to be responsible for emission quenching in a polar solvent. Despite the different arrangement of the cage on the DABNA core, both 1 and 2 show red-shifted emissions compared to the parent compound BuDABNA (3). By utilizing 1 as the emitter, high-efficiency blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are achieved with a remarkable maximum external quantum efficiency of 25%, representing the highest reported efficiency for OLEDs employing an o-carboranyl luminophore as the emitter.

Towards Long-Term Stable Perovskite Solar Cells: Degradation Mechanisms and Stabilization Techniques

It is certain that perovskite materials must be a game-changer in the solar industry as long as their stability reaches a level comparable with the lifetime of a commercialized Si photovoltaic. However, the operational stability of perovskite solar cells and modules still remains unresolved, especially when devices operate in practical energy-harvesting modes represented by maximum power point tracking under 1 sun illumination at ambient conditions. This review article covers from fundamental aspects of perovskite instability including chemical decomposition pathways under light soaking and electrical bias, to recent advances and techniques that effectively prevent such degradation of perovskite solar cells and modules. In particular, fundamental causes for permanent degradation due to ion migration and trapped charges are overviewed and explain their interplay between ions and charges. Based on the degradation mechanism, recent advances on the strategies are discussed to slow down the degradation during operation for a practical use of perovskite-based solar devices.

Steerable and Agile Light-Fueled Rolling Locomotors by Curvature-Engineered Torsional Torque

On-demand photo-steerable amphibious rolling motions are generated by the structural engineering of monolithic soft locomotors. Photo-morphogenesis of azobenzene-functionalized liquid crystal polymer networks (azo-LCNs) is designed from spiral ribbon to helicoid helices, employing a 270° super-twisted nematic molecular geometry with aspect ratio variations of azo-LCN strips. Unlike the intermittent and biased rolling of spiral ribbon azo-LCNs with center-of-mass shifting, the axial torsional torque of helicoid azo-LCNs enables continuous and straight rolling at high rotation rates (≈720 rpm). Furthermore, center-tapered helicoid structures with wide edges are introduced for effectively accelerating photo-motilities while maintaining directional controllability. Irrespective of surface conditions, the photo-induced rotational torque of center-tapered helicoid azo-LCNs can be transferred to interacting surfaces, as manifested by steep slope climbing and paddle-like swimming multimodal motilities. Finally, the authors demonstrate continuous curvilinear guidance of soft locomotors, bypassing obstacles and reaching desired destinations through real-time on-demand photo-steering.

Highly Efficient Van Der Waals Heterojunction on Graphdiyne toward the High-Performance Photodetector

Graphdiyne (GDY), a new 2D material, has recently proven excellent performance in photodetector applications due to its direct bandgap and high mobility. Different from the zero-gap of graphene, these preeminent properties made GDY emerge as a rising star for solving the bottleneck of graphene-based inefficient heterojunction. Herein, a highly effective graphdiyne/molybdenum (GDY/MoS2 ) type-II heterojunction in a charge separation is reported toward a high-performance photodetector. Characterized by robust electron repulsion of alkyne-rich skeleton, the GDY based junction facilitates the effective electron-hole pairs separation and transfer. This results in significant suppression of Auger recombination up to six times at the GDY/MoS2 interface compared with the pristine materials owing to an ultrafast hot hole transfer from MoS2 to GDY. GDY/MoS2 device demonstrates notable photovoltaic behavior with a short-circuit current of -1.3 × 10-5 A and a large open-circuit voltage of 0.23 V under visible irradiation. As a positive-charge-attracting magnet, under illumination, alkyne-rich framework induces positive photogating effect on the neighboring MoS2 , further enhancing photocurrent. Consequently, the device exhibits broadband detection (453-1064 nm) with a maximum responsivity of 78.5 A W-1 and a high speed of 50 µs. Results open up a new promising strategy using GDY toward effective junction for future optoelectronic applications.

Characterization of multitype colonies originating from porcine blastocysts produced in vitro

Many types of embryonic stem cells have been induced from pre-implantation blastocysts to study the specification of early lineages. Various cell lines have been established using chemicals, including excessive inhibitory molecules. Previous studies have also aimed to purify cell populations representing a single embryonic lineage from a protocol. In this study, we used a novel culture condition to induce cells from blastocyst seeding and analyzed their characteristics. Next, signaling inhibitors were introduced during the cell culture period. Furthermore, we investigated the cell types using RNA sequencing. Each type of cell population showed a distinct morphology and reactivity with alkaline phosphatase. Marker proteins enabled each cell type to be distinguished by immunocytochemistry, and genes such as Sox17, Gata4, Gata6, T, and Cdx2 showed applicability for the discrimination of cell types. Signaling inhibitors suppressed the production of some cell types, and gene expression and marker protein patterns were collapsed. RNA-sequencing suggested cell-type-specific marker genes and the correlation among samples. In conclusion, four types of cells could be induced from porcine embryos using a single protocol, and they could be isolated manually. Our data will help promote the study of lineage segregation based on embryonic cells.

Color-Tuning Mechanism of Electrically Stretchable Photonic Organogels

In contrast to nano-processed rigid photonic crystals with fixed structures, soft photonic organic hydrogel beads with dielectric nanostructures possess advanced capabilities, such as stimuli-responsive deformation and photonic wavelength color changes. Recenlty, advanced from well-investigated mechanochromic method, an electromechanical stress approach is used to demonstrate electrically induced mechanical color shifts in soft organic photonic hydrogel beads. To better understand the electrically stretchable color change functionality in such soft organic photonic hydrogel systems, the electromechanical wavelength-tuning mechanism is comprehensively investigated in this study. By employing controllable electroactive dielectric elastomeric actuators, the discoloration wavelength-tuning process of an electrically stretchable photonic organogel is carefully examined. Based on the experimental in-situ response of electrically stretchable nano-spherical polystyrene hydrogel beads, the color change mechanism is meticulously analyzed. Further, changes in the nanostructure of the symmetrically and electrically stretchable organogel are analytically investigated through simulations of its hexagonal close-packed (HCP) lattice model. Detailed photonic wavelength control factors, such as the refractive index of dielectric materials, lattice diffraction, and bead distance in an organogel lattice, are theoretically studied. Herein, the switcing mechanism of electrically stretchable mechanochromic photonic organogels with photonic stopband-tuning features are suggested for the first time.

Organic Anisotropic Excitonic Optical Nanoantennas

Optical nanoantennas provide control of light at the nanoscale, which makes them important for diverse areas ranging from photocatalysis and flat metaoptics to sensors and biomolecular tweezing. They have traditionally been limited to metallic and dielectric nanostructures that sustain plasmonic and Mie resonances, respectively. More recently, nanostructures of organic J-aggregate excitonic materials have been proposed capable of also supporting nanooptical resonances, although their advance has been hampered from difficulty in nanostructuring. Here, the authors present the realization of organic J-aggregate excitonic nanostructures, using nanocylinder arrays as model system. Extinction spectra show that they can sustain both plasmon-like resonances and dielectric resonances, owing to the material providing negative and large positive permittivity regions at the different sides of its exciton resonance. Furthermore, it is found that the material is highly anisotropic, leading to hyperbolic and elliptic permittivity regions. Nearfield analysis using optical simulation reveals that the nanostructures therefore support hyperbolic localized surface exciton resonances and elliptic Mie resonances, neither of which has been previously demonstrated for this type of material. The anisotropic nanostructures form a new type of optical nanoantennas, which combined with the presented fabrication process opens up for applications such as fully organic excitonic metasurfaces.

Anticancer effect of locally applicable aptamer-conjugated gemcitabine-loaded atelocollagen patch in pancreatic cancer patient-derived xenograft models

We investigated the anticancer effect of the aptamer-conjugated gemcitabine-loaded atelocollagen patch in a pancreatic cancer patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model to propose a future potential adjuvant surgical strategy during curative pancreatic resection for pancreatic cancer. A pancreatic cancer PDX model was established. Animals were grouped randomly into a no-treatment control group; treatment group treated with intraperitoneal gemcitabine injection (IP-GEM) or aptamer-conjugated gemcitabine (APT:GEM); and transplant with three kinds of patches: atelocollagen-aptamer-gemcitabine (patch I), atelocollagen-inactive aptamer-gemcitabine (patch II), and atelocollagen-gemcitabine (patch III). Tumor volumes and response were evaluated based on histological analysis by H&E staining and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed. Anticancer therapy-related toxicity was evaluated by hematologic findings. The patch I group showed the most significant reduction of tumor growth rate, compared with the no-treatment group (p < 0.05). However, other treatment groups were not found to show significant reduction in tumor growth rate (0.05 < p < 0.1). There was no microscopic evidence suggesting potential toxicity, such as inflammation, nor necrotic changes in liver, lung, kidney, and spleen tissue. In addition, no leukopenia, anemia, or neutropenia was observed in the patch I group. This implantable aptamer-drug conjugate system is thought to be a new surgical strategy to augment the oncologic significance of margin-negative resection in treating pancreatic cancer in near future.

High-Resolution 3D Printing for Electronics

The ability to form arbitrary 3D structures provides the next level of complexity and a greater degree of freedom in the design of electronic devices. Since recent progress in electronics has expanded their applicability in various fields in which structural conformability and dynamic configuration are required, high-resolution 3D printing technologies can offer significant potential for freeform electronics. Here, the recent progress in novel 3D printing methods for freeform electronics is reviewed, with providing a comprehensive study on 3D-printable functional materials and processes for various device components. The latest advances in 3D-printed electronics are also reviewed to explain representative device components, including interconnects, batteries, antennas, and sensors. Furthermore, the key challenges and prospects for next-generation printed electronics are considered, and the future directions are explored based on research that has emerged recently.

Epitaxial Growth of Flower-Like MoS2 on One-Dimensional Nickel Titanate Nanofibers: A “Sweet Spot” for Efficient Photoreduction of Carbon Dioxide

Herein, a full spectrum-induced hybrid structure consisting of one-dimensional nickel titanate (NiTiO₃) nanofibers (NFs) decorated by petal-like molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) particles was designed through a facile hydrothermal method. The key parameters for tailoring the morphology and chemical, surface, and interfacial properties of the heterostructure were identified for efficient and selective conversion of CO₂ into valuable chemicals. Introducing MoS₂ layers onto NiTiO₃ NFs provided superior CO₂ conversion with significantly higher yields. The optimized hybrid structure produced CO and CH₄ yields of 130 and 55 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹, respectively, which are 3.8- and 3.6-times higher than those from pristine NiTiO₃ nanofibers (34 and 15 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹, respectively) and 3.6- and 5.5-times higher than those from pristine MoS₂ (37 and 10 μmol g⁻¹ h⁻¹, respectively). This improved performance was attributed to efficient absorption of a wider spectrum of light and efficient transfer of electrons across the heterojunction. Effective charge separation and reduced charge carrier recombination were confirmed by photoluminescence and impedance measurements. The performance may also be partly due to enhanced hydrophobicity of the hierarchical surfaces due to MoS₂ growth. This strategy contributes to the rational design of perovskite-based photocatalysts for CO₂ reduction.

A New Class of Carbon Nanostructures for High-Performance Electro-Magnetic and -Chemical Barriers

It is of importance to explore a new carbon nanomaterial possessing vital functions to fulfill the high standards for practical achievement of the electromagnetic (EM) barrier for blocking EM waves and the electrochemical (EC) barrier as a functional separator for EC energy storage. Herein, facile synthesis of a new class of carbon nanostructures, which consist of interconnected N-doped graphitic carbon nanocubes partially embedded by nickel nanoparticles, is described. The hollow interior of graphitic nanocube induces internal reflection of EM waves and confines active materials of EC energy storage. Nitrogen functionalities implanted in graphitic structure enhance electrical conductivity as well as improve chemical interaction with active materials. Furthermore, nickel nanoparticles in graphitic nanocube function as an EM wave-absorbing material and an electrocatalyst for EC energy storage. Through comprehensive assessments, remarkable performances originating from distinctive nanostructures give new insights into structural design for the carbon nanostructure-based high-performance EM and EC barriers.
