Morphology and surface analyses for CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite thin films treated with versatile solvent-antisolvent vapors

Organometal halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) semiconductors have been promising candidates as a photoactive layer for photovoltaics. Especially for high performance devices, the crystal structure and morphology of this perovskite layer should be optimized. In this experiment, by employing solvent-antisolvent vapor techniques during a modified sequential deposition of PbI2-CH3NH3I layers, the morphology engineering was carried out as a function of antisolvent species such as: chloroform, chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene, toluene, and diethyl ether. Then, the optical, morphological, structural, and surface properties were characterized. When dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO, solvent) and diethyl ether (antisolvent) vapors were employed, the CH3NH3PbI3 layer exhibited relatively desirable crystal structures and morphologies, resulting in an optical bandgap (E g) of 1.61 eV, crystallite size (t) of 89.5 nm, and high photoluminescence (PL) intensity. Finally, the stability of perovskite films toward water was found to be dependent on the morphologies with defects such as grain boundaries, which was evaluated through contact angle measurement.

Dinitrogen Reduction Coupled with Methanol Oxidation for Low Overpotential Electrochemical NH3 Synthesis Over Cobalt Pyrophosphate as Bifunctional Catalyst

Electrochemical dinitrogen (N₂ ) reduction to ammonia (NH₃ ) coupled with methanol electro-oxidation is presented in the current work. Here, methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is proposed as an alternative anode reaction to oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to accomplish electrons-induced reduction of N₂ to NH₃ at cathode and oxidation of methanol at anode in alkaline media thereby reducing the overall cell voltage for ammonia production. Cobalt pyrophosphate micro-flowers assembled by nanosheets are synthesized via a surfactant-assisted sonochemical approach. By virtue of structural and morphological advantages, the maximum Faradaic efficiency of 43.37% and NH₃ yield rate of 159.6 µg h^-1 mg_ca ^-1 is achieved at a potential of -0.2 V versus RHE. The proposed catalyst is shown to also exhibit a very high activity (100 mA mg^-1 at 1.48 V), durability (2 h) and production of value-added formic acid at anode (2.78 µmol h^-1 mg_cat ^-1 and F.E. of 59.2%). The overall NH₃ synthesis is achieved at a reduced cell voltage of 1.6 V (200 mV less than NRR-OER coupled NH₃ synthesis) when OER at anode is replaced with MOR and a high NH₃ yield rate of 95.2 µg h^-1 mg_cat ^-1 and HCOOH formation rate of 2.53 µmol h^-1 mg^-1 are witnessed under full-cell conditions.

An experimental study to decipher the implications of antigenic sharing between Proteus mirabilis and mouse spermatozoa in eliciting an antisperm immune response: A potential culprit in immune infertility

The present study aims to investigate the antigenic cross reactivity between the receptor from Proteus mirabilis and spermatozoa against a common sperm immobilization factor, SIF, by calorimetric and competitive inhibition studies, and the immunogenicity of this receptor to evoke the formation of antisperm antibodies and their subsequent role in fertility outcome. The sperm binding receptor from Proteus mirabilis (PM-SBR) was extracted from ultrasonicated cell debris by treating it for 12 h at 37°C with 1 M NaCl. After being purified by gel permeation chromatography, its molecular weight as determined by SDS-PAGE was observed to be ≈ 47 kDa. The detrimental impacts of Sperm immobilizing factor (SIF) on spermatozoa viz. motility, viability, and morphology were mitigated when SIF was preincubated with various concentrations of PM-SBR. Using isothermal titration calorimetry, the entropy of the SIF-PM-SBR interaction was found to be -18.31 kJ/mol, whereas the free energy was 28.4 J/mol K. FTIR analysis was used to evaluate the binding interactions between PM-SBR and SIF. In addition, mice that were administered antibodies against PM-SBR were unable to conceive, in contrast to mice that were administered Phosphate buffer saline (PBS) or pre-immunization serum as controls. In light of this, we may conclude that anti-PM-SBR antibodies act as anti-sperm antibodies. Our work found that molecular mimicry between Proteus mirabilis and spermatozoa may cause antisperm immune reactivity. As a result of an immunological response to PM-SBR, infected individuals may produce antibodies against an epitope similar to one found on spermatozoa which helps in developing new strategies for managing autoimmune responses and infertility.

Synthesis of Triazolo[4',5':4,5]furo[2,3-c]pyridine via Post Modification of an Unusual Groebke-Blackburn-Bienaymé Multicomponent Reaction

The Groebke-Blackburn-Bienaymé (GBB) reaction is a well-established three-component reaction for synthesizing imidazofused scaffolds from heterocyclic amidines, aldehydes, and isonitriles. However, the replacement of pyridoxal as an aldehyde component in this reaction results in the formation of the furo[2,3-c]pyridine skeleton as an "unusual GBB product". Despite the interesting nature of this unusual reaction, not much work was further reported. The present research investigates the optimization strategy for the synthesis of novel tricyclic triazolo[4',5':4,5]furo[2,3-c]pyridines via diazotization of 2,3-diamino-furo[2,3-c]pyridines specifically synthesized utilizing the chemistry of tert-alkyl isocyanide.

Short-chain fatty acids as a novel intervention for high-fat diet-induced metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is driven by a complex interplay of genetic, lifestyle, and dietary factors, leading to weight gain, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and chronic inflammation. Gut microbiota dysbiosis has been recently recognized as a key contributor to MetS, leading to advancements in gut microbiome-based interventions to improve health outcomes. Considering the unique challenges associated with the use of pre/probiotics, short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), also known as postbiotics, have emerged as promising therapeutic agents due to their role in modulating host metabolism and physiology. Considering this, the aim of the current study was to explore the therapeutic potential of SCFA (butyrate, propionate, and acetate) supplementation against a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced experimental model of MetS in male Wistar rats. Alterations in body weight, lipid profile, histopathology, and adipose tissue accumulation were assessed to establish SCFA-mediated amelioration of experimental MetS. Further, the enzymatic (GPx, Catalase, GR, and GST) and non-enzymatic (LPO, total ROS, and Redox ratio were evaluated. The results indicated that SCFA supplementation could effectively mitigate key features of MetS. A significant reduction in body weight gain and fasting blood glucose levels, along with markedly lowered triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL levels, with partial restoration of HDL levels was observed following SCFA supplementation. SCFA administration also attenuated MetS-associated hepatic damage as studied by histopathological investigation and analysis of liver function marker enzyme activities. Such ameliorative effects of SCFA against HFD-induced MetS were owed to potential redox modulation studied using enzymatic and non-enzymatic oxidative stress markers. In conclusion, the study's outcomes show that SCFA supplementation could potentially be used against managing MetS. It underscores the therapeutic potential of SCFA by placing them as a novel gut microbiome-based dietary approach to improve metabolic health and reduce the risk of MetS-associated complications. However, more detailed mechanistic explorations are warranted in the future, leading to their beneficial role in MetS contributing to holistic health outcomes.

Naphthalene peri-Diselenide-Based BODIPY Probe for the Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide, tert-Butylhydroperoxide, Hydroxyl Radical, and Peroxynitrite Ion

Dimethoxynaphthalene peri-diselenide-based BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) probe has been synthesized. The probe demonstrated selectivity and sensitivity for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and tert-butylhydroperoxide (t-BuOOH), hydroxyl radical (•OH), and peroxynitrite ion (ONOO-) detection and reversibility upon treatment with glutathione. The limits of detection of the probe were observed to be 0.40 μM for H2O2, 0.41 μM for t-BuOOH, 0.95 μM for •OH, and 0.46 μM for ONOO-, respectively. A proposed mechanism for the "turn-on" event has been suggested and corroborated by spectroscopic and computational data. It has been proposed that electron transfer occurred from the Se center to the BODIPY moiety, followed by the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism.
