Antimicrobial Chitosan Conjugates: Current Synthetic Strategies and Potential Applications

As a natural polysaccharide, chitosan possesses good biocompatibility, biodegradability and biosafety. Its hydroxyl and amino groups make it an ideal carrier material in the construction of polymer-drug conjugates. In recent years, various synthetic strategies have been used to couple chitosan with active substances to obtain conjugates with diverse structures and unique functions. In particular, chitosan conjugates with antimicrobial activity have shown great application prospects in the fields of medicine, food, and agriculture in recent years. Hence, we will place substantial emphasis on the synthetic approaches for preparing chitosan conjugates and their antimicrobial applications, which are not well summarized. Meanwhile, the challenges, limitations, and prospects of antimicrobial chitosan conjugates are described and discussed.

Efficacy of a Chitin-Based Water-Soluble Derivative in Inducing Purpureocillium lilacinum against Nematode Disease (Meloidogyne incognita)

Plant-parasitic nematodes cause severe economic losses annually which has been a persistent problem worldwide. As current nematicides are highly toxic, prone to drug resistance, and have poor stability, there is an urgent need to develop safe, efficient, and green strategies. Natural active polysaccharides such as chitin and chitosan with good biocompatibility and biodegradability and inducing plant disease resistance have attracted much attention, but their application is limited due to their poor solubility. Here, we prepared 6-oxychitin with good water solubility by introducing carboxylic acid groups based on retaining the original skeleton of chitin and evaluated its potential for nematode control. The results showed that 6-oxychitin is a better promoter of the nematicidal potential of Purpureocillium lilacinum than other water-soluble chitin derivatives. After treatment, the movement of J2s and egg hatching were obviously inhibited. Further plant experiments found that it can destroy the accumulation and invasion of nematodes, and has a growth-promoting effect. Therefore, 6-oxychitin has great application potential in the nematode control area.

Understanding the Fundamentals of Microporosity Upgrading in Zeolites: Increasing Diffusion and Catalytic Performances

Hierarchical zeolites are regarded as promising catalysts due to their well-developed porosity, increased accessible surface area, and minimal diffusion constraints. Thus far, the focus has been on the creation of mesopores in zeolites, however, little is known about a microporosity upgrading and its effect on the diffusion and catalytic performance. Here the authors show that the "birth" of mesopore formation in faujasite (FAU) type zeolite starts by removing framework T atoms from the sodalite (SOD) cages followed by propagation throughout the crystals. This is evidenced by following the diffusion of xenon (Xe) in the mesoporous FAU zeolite prepared by unbiased leaching with NH4 F in comparison to the pristine FAU zeolite. A new diffusion pathway for the Xe in the mesoporous zeolite is proposed. Xenon first penetrates through the opened SOD cages and then diffuses to supercages of the mesoporous zeolite. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that Xe diffusion between SOD cage and supercage occurs only in hierarchical FAU structure with defect-contained six-member-ring separating these two types of cages. The catalytic performance of the mesoporous FAU zeolite further indicates that the upgraded microporosity facilitates the intracrystalline molecular traffic and increases the catalytic performance.

Influence of gas migration on permeability of soft coalbed methane reservoirs under true triaxial stress conditions

The permeability of the coal body is the key parameter restricting the efficient extraction of coalbed methane, and scholars have analysed it from two angles of the change of stress state and porosity of the coal body. However, there is still a lack of study on the mechanism of gas migration and movement in soft coalbed methane reservoir under the coupling between the true triaxial stress field (maximum principal stress σ ₁ > intermediate principal stress σ ₂ > minimum principal stress σ ₃) and the gas pressure field. In this paper, the coal gas adsorption and seepage experiments are conducted through the self-developed true triaxial 'gas-solid' coupled coal mass seepage system with gas as the adsorption and seepage medium and coal briquette taking the place of soft coalbed methane reservoirs. Furthermore, the coal gas adsorption deformation model and the permeability evolution model taking gas adsorption into account are developed. Through analysis of both experimental and theoretic results, the main conclusions are drawn as follows: (i) With the increase in gas pressure, the adsorption deformation variation of coal mass is divided into a slow growth zone, a stable growth zone and a rapid growth zone. (ii) The gas adsorption deformation model developed can predict the variation trend of coal mass adsorption volumetric strains for different types of soft coalbeds, and the fitting variance of experimental and theoretical volumetric strains is above 98%. (iii) With the increase in maximum principal stress difference, the coal permeability variation curve shows two obvious turning points, which can be divided into a slow reduction zone, a rapid reduction zone and a steady reduction zone. (iv) The permeability model of coal mass considering the gas adsorption effect can reflect the variation characteristics of permeability in the rapid reduction zone, and the overall fitting variance of experimental and theoretical permeabilities is above 91%. The above results could provide a reliable experimental and theoretical basis for improving coalbed methane extraction rates.

Emerging roles of ribosome translation in stem cells and stem cell therapy - a review

Stem cells differ from other somatic cells in that they possess self-renewal and differentiation potential, which endows them with unique characteristics, and have great therapeutic potential. Studies have shown that the self-renewal and differentiation potential of stem cells is regulated by ribosomes during protein synthesis. In this review, we discuss the translation regulation mechanisms and ribosome biogenesis in stem cells. Protein translation levels and ribosome biogenesis change dynamically during the development and differentiation of stem cells, and hierarchical translational regulation promotes stem cell differentiation. We also demonstrate that mitochondrial protein translation plays an important role in the regulation of stem cell fate. Ribosomes not only mediate the self-renewal and differentiation of stem cells through protein synthesis. They are also a key target for stem cell therapy. Understanding the mechanism of ribosome regulation in stem cells will allow better control of stem cells for their application.
