Recycling Waste Agricultural Nets as Cement Composites

The advancement of agricultural mesh technology has contributed to its improved properties. As a result, agricultural nets are widely adopted in large-scale farming applications, for example, in cereal crop farming. However, a consequence of this increased use of agricultural nets is the accumulation of large amounts of waste. The current paper focuses on the recycling of agricultural nets used in wrapping straw bales to develop additives and fillers in cement composites. The research details an analysis of the use of waste agricultural meshes as an ingredient in cement composites. Six test series of different mixtures were conducted. In the first four series, agricultural waste was utilised as an additive in a composite comprising aggregate and cement slurry (the amounts of wasted nets were 20, 40, 60, and 80 kg/m3). In the last test series, the recyclate utilised comprised a mixture of cement slurry and waste only. The composites were subjected to standard tests and thermal resistance tests. The results showcased that that the addition of a net worsened the workability of the concrete mixture, and with increasing amounts of addition, the consistency of the mixture could change from liquid to dense plastic. The flexural strength of the composite decreased with increasing amounts of recyclate. In subsequent test series, the flexural strength value was lower than that of the control (3.93 MPa), from 7.38% (3.64 MPa) for the composite with 20 kg/m3 of recyclate to 37.66% (2.45 MPa) for the composite with of 80 kg/m3 recyclate. The flexural strength value of the net-filled composite without aggregate was very high (10.44 MPa), where the value obtained for the control composite was 62.36% lower. The results of the compressive strength test showed a decrease in this parameter with increasing amounts of additive. The value assessed for the control composite was 27.99 MPa. As expected, the composite that had no aggregate and consisted of only recycled filler had the lowest compressive strength. The value of this parameter was 13.07 MPa, and it was 53.31% lower than that of the control composite. The results of the tests of resistance to temperatures were similar to those recorded for the composites with polypropylene fibres. All composites demonstrated a significant decrease in their compressive and flexural strength after annealing. SEM imaging showed that the net fibres were closely bonded to the cement stone. Finally, it was concluded that recyclates performed best as fillers in lightweight composites with a low density, low absorption, high flexural strength, and satisfactory compressive strength.

The Interplay of Nitric Oxide and Nitrosative Modifications in Maize: Implications for Aphid Herbivory and Drought Stress

Nitric oxide (NO) and other reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are considered to be signaling molecules in higher plants involved in the regulation of growth and development processes. However, the molecular mechanisms of their formation, removal, and participation in plant responses to adverse environmental stimuli remain largely unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the influence of selected single stresses and combined stresses (i.e., Rhopalosiphum padi L. aphid infestation, drought, aphid infestation, and drought) and post-stress recovery on the contents of NO and peroxynitrite anion (ONOO-), as well as the levels of mRNA and protein nitration (i.e., the 8-nitroguanine and protein 3-nitrotyrosine amounts, respectively), in maize seedlings (Zea mays L.). Moreover, the expression patterns of the two tested genes (nos-ip, encoding nitric oxide synthase-interacting protein, and nr1, encoding nitrate reductase 1) involved in NO metabolism in maize plants were quantified. We identified significant intervarietal, time-course, and stress-dependent differences in the levels of the quantified parameters. Under the investigated stress conditions, the aphid-resistant Waza cv. seedlings were characterized by a higher and earlier NO accumulation and mRNA nitration level and an increased expression of the two target genes (nos-ip and nr1), compared to the aphid-susceptible Złota Karłowa cv. seedlings. Conversely, the Złota Karłowa plants responded with a greater elevation in the content of ONOO- and protein 3-nitrotyrosine than the Waza cv. plants The multifaceted role of NO and its derivatives in maize plants challenged by single and combined stresses, as well as during post-stress recovery, is discussed.

New Insights into Involvement of Low Molecular Weight Proteins in Complex Defense Mechanisms in Higher Plants

Dynamic climate changes pose a significant challenge for plants to cope with numerous abiotic and biotic stressors of increasing intensity. Plants have evolved a variety of biochemical and molecular defense mechanisms involved in overcoming stressful conditions. Under environmental stress, plants generate elevated amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and, subsequently, modulate the activity of the antioxidative enzymes. In addition, an increase in the biosynthesis of important plant compounds such as anthocyanins, lignin, isoflavonoids, as well as a wide range of low molecular weight stress-related proteins (e.g., dehydrins, cyclotides, heat shock proteins and pathogenesis-related proteins), was evidenced. The induced expression of these proteins improves the survival rate of plants under unfavorable environmental stimuli and enhances their adaptation to sequentially interacting stressors. Importantly, the plant defense proteins may also have potential for use in medical applications and agriculture (e.g., biopesticides). Therefore, it is important to gain a more thorough understanding of the complex biological functions of the plant defense proteins. It will help to devise new cultivation strategies, including the development of genotypes characterized by better adaptations to adverse environmental conditions. The review presents the latest research findings on selected plant defense proteins.

Genistein and Naringenin as Defense Molecules

Genistein and naringenin, plant phenolic compounds, are recognized for their health benefits and role in plant defense against herbivores. However, little research exists on how these compounds affect aphid feeding, particularly that of the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae Scopoli) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a major pest. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of genistein and naringenin, applied in vitro at different concentrations, on the feeding behavior of A. fabae. Statistical analysis indicated that both the type and concentration of flavonoids significantly influenced aphid stylet activity, salivation, and ingestion. Higher concentrations of both compounds hindered feeding behavior. A longer initial probe was observed on gels containing the studied flavonoids. Genistein at 0.1% completely inhibited salivation while at 0.01%, it reduced the duration of salivation activities. Both compounds also delayed the start and lengthened the duration of active ingestion, though A. fabae tolerated genistein better than naringenin. Naringenin's effects on feeding behavior were more pronounced at higher concentrations. These findings suggest that genistein and naringenin could be valuable chemicals to protect plants from aphids in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Tourism influences escape behavior of lizards in relationship with human clothing color

Increased tourism pressure modifies animal behavior, including alterations in anti-predator responses and foraging activity. In areas with high tourist presence, animals may become accustomed to increased human activity and adjust the intensity of some defensive responses. An animal's anti-predation ability is usually estimated by measuring its Alert Initiation Distance (AID) and Flight Initiation Distance (FID). Both indexes are affected by multiple factors including the color of the observer's clothing. Animal behavior is also influenced by human presence, and individuals may become accustomed to increased human presence, e.g. in tourist areas. In this study, we analysed the escape behavior of the endemic Cyprus rock agama (Laudakia cypriaca) in relation to the observers clothing color. Our results showed that AIDs and FIDs of agamas in tourist areas were significantly shorter than those in non-tourist areas. Moreover, in non-tourist areas, AIDs and FIDs of agamas were significantly longer when the observer wore red clothes, compared to green and grey clothes. Our results may be helpful in planning research taking into account various colored clothing based on expected reptilian reactions. Furthermore, our results may determine the proximity at which humans interact with animals, considering clothing color, to prevent negative impacts especially on rare and protected lizard species.
