Generation of Allylmagnesium Reagents by Hydromagnesiation of 2-Aryl-1,3-dienes

A protocol for the generation of allylmagnesium reagents from 2-aryl-1,3-dienes was developed using magnesium hydride (MgH₂ ) that is generated in situ by solvothermal treatment of sodium hydride (NaH) and magnesium iodide (MgI₂ ) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). Downstream functionalization of the resulting allylmagnesium reagents with carbonyl compounds or alkyl (pseudo)halides delivers branched products having an allylic quaternary carbon center, whereas that with chlorosilanes resulted in formation of linear allylsilanes in regio and stereoselective manners. Further derivatizations of the homoallylic alcohols and allylsilanes were also demonstrated.

Chemodivergent, Regio- and Enantioselective Cycloaddition Reactions between 1,3-Dienes and Alkynes

Alkynes and 1,3-dienes are among the most readily available precursors for organic synthesis. We report two distinctly different, catalyst-dependent, modes of regio- and enantioselective cycloaddition reactions between these classes of compounds providing rapid access to highly functionalized 1,4-cyclohexadienes or cyclobutenes from the same precursors. Complexes of an earth abundant metal, cobalt, with several commercially available chiral bisphosphine ligands with narrow bite angles catalyze [4+2]-cycloadditions between a 1,3-diene and an alkyne giving a cyclohexa-1,4-diene in excellent chemo-, regio- and enantioselectivities. In sharp contrast, complex of a finely tuned phosphino-oxazoline ligand promotes unique [2+2]-cycloaddition between the alkyne and the terminal double bond of the diene giving a highly functionalized cyclobutene in excellent regio- and enantioselectivities.

PdII -Catalyzed C(alkenyl)-H Activation Facilitated by a Transient Directing Group

Palladium(II)‐catalyzed C(alkenyl)−H alkenylation enabled by a transient directing group (TDG) strategy is described. The dual catalytic process takes advantage of reversible condensation between an alkenyl aldehyde substrate and an amino acid TDG to facilitate coordination of the metal catalyst and subsequent C(alkenyl)−H activation by a tailored carboxylate base. The resulting palladacycle then engages an acceptor alkene, furnishing a 1,3‐diene with high regio‐ and E/Z‐selectivity. The reaction enables the synthesis of enantioenriched atropoisomeric 2‐aryl‐substituted 1,3‐dienes, which have seldom been examined in previous literature. Catalytically relevant alkenyl palladacycles were synthesized and characterized by X‐ray crystallography, and the energy profiles of the C(alkenyl)−H activation step and the stereoinduction model were elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Acceleration of metallacycle-mediated alkyne-alkyne cross-coupling with TMSCl

Investigation of titanium-centered metallacycle-mediated cross-coupling between unsymmetrical internal alkynes has led to the discovery that TMSCl significantly accelerates the C-C bond forming event. We report a collection of results that compare the efficiency of this reaction employing Ti(Oi-Pr)₄/2n-BuLi in PhMe with and without TMSCl, demonstrating in every case that the presence of TMSCl has a profound impact on efficiency. While relevant in the context of developing this fundamental bond-forming process as an entry to more complex organometallic transformations, these modified reaction conditions allow coupling processes to be run at > 10 times the concentrations previously possible [in 2.4M n-BuLi (hexanes)], without the requirement of additional solvent. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of these modified reaction conditions for the annulative cross-coupling between TMS-alkynes and 1,6-enynes leading to the formation of angularly substituted hydrindanes with, now well appreciated, high levels of regio- and stereoselection.
