Manganese dioxide-coated biocarbon for integrated adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde in indoor conditions

Formaldehyde is a common indoor air pollutant with hazardous effects on human health. This study investigated the efficiency of biocarbon (BC) functionalized with variable contents of MnO2 for formaldehyde removal in ambient conditions via integrated adsorption-photocatalytic degradation technology. The sample with the highest formaldehyde removal potential was used to prepare a functional coating made of acrylic binder mixed with 20 wt% of the particles and applied on beech (Fagus sylvatica L) substrate. SEM images showed that MnO2 was deposited around and inside the pores of the BC. EDX spectra indicated the presence of Mn peaks and increased content of oxygen in the doped BC compared to pure BC, which indicated the successful formation of MnO2. Raman spectra revealed that the disorder in the BC's structure increased with increasing MnO2 loadings. FTIR spectra of BC-MnO2 samples displayed additional peaks compared to the BC spectrum, which were attributed to MnO vibrations. Moreover, the deposition of increased MnO2 loadings decreased the porosity of the BC due to pores blockage. The BC sample containing 8 % Mn exhibited the highest formaldehyde removal efficiency in 8 h, which was 91 %. A synergetic effect between BC and MnO2 was observed. The formaldehyde removal efficiency and capacity of the coating reached 43 % and 6.1 mg/m2, respectively, suggesting that the developed coating can be potentially used to improve air quality in the built environment.

Promoted wet peroxide oxidation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds catalyzed by FeOCl supported on macro-microporous biomass-derived activated carbon

Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) are a recalcitrant class of air pollutants, and the strongly oxidizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are promising to degrade them. In this study, a FeOCl-loaded biomass-derived activated carbon (BAC) has been used as an adsorbent for accumulating CVOCs and catalyst for activating H₂O₂ to construct a wet scrubber for the removal of airborne CVOCs. In addition to well-developed micropores, the BAC has macropores mimicking those of biostructures, which allows CVOCs to diffuse easily to its adsorption sites and catalytic sites. Probe experiments have revealed HO^• to be the dominant ROS in the FeOCl/BAC + H₂O₂ system. The wet scrubber performs well at pH 3 and H₂O₂ concentrations as low as a few mM. It is capable of removing over 90% of dichloroethane, trichloroethylene, dichloromethane and chlorobenzene from air. By applying pulsed dosing or continuous dosing to replenish H₂O₂ to maintain its appropriate concentration, the system achieves good long-term efficiency. A dichloroethane degradation pathway is proposed based on the analysis of intermediates. This work may provide inspiration for the design of catalyst exploiting the inherent structure of biomass for catalytic wet oxidation of CVOCs or other contaminants.

Characteristics of Cu(II)-modified aerobic granular sludge biocarbon in removal of doxycycline hydroxide

In this study, the biocarbon derived from aerobic granular sludge with different nutritive proportions was modified by Cu(NO₃)₂•3H₂O (Cu-BC) to improve its adsorption capacity of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX). The surface area, pores, functional groups, and element composition of biocarbon were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, X-ray diffraction (XRD), the X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), respectively. Effects of DOX concentration, initial pH, and background electrolyte on adsorption effects of composite were analyzed. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics, and diffusion model were investigated. Results demonstrated that biocarbons which were prepared with aerobic granular sludge under different nutritive proportions presented different performances. The BET specific surface area of Cu-NaAC/AGS-BC was 260.1592 m²/g, and the micropore volume was 0.054101 cm³/g. The BET specific surface area of Cu-GLC /AGS-BC was only 10.6821 m²/g, and the micropore volume was 0.008687 cm³/g. Both kinds of modified biochar contain a large number of oxygen-containing functional groups. The highest adsorption efficiency of Cu-BC could reach 99.54%. The adsorption of DOX on two modified biocarbons conforms to the pseudo-second-order dynamic model and Temkin isothermal model.

Effect of slow pyrolysis conditions on biocarbon yield and properties: Characterization of the volatiles

Slow pyrolysis of spruce and birch was performed at various heating programs and conditions in a horizontal quartz tube reactor heated by an electric furnace. The effects of feedstock and carbonization conditions on the yield of biocarbon, liquid and gaseous products were studied. The thermal properties, volatile matter (VM) content and the evolution profiles of volatiles from the biocarbons were characterized by thermogravimetry/mass spectrometry. The composition of volatiles was analyzed in detail by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Increased char yield was observed when staged pyrolysis program, low purging flow rate or covered sample holder were applied. Spruce produced more charcoal than birch due to the higher lignin content of softwood. The amount and the evolution profiles of the main gaseous products were similar from spruce and birch biocarbons prepared under the same conditions. The relative amount of aromatic and polyaromatic compounds in VM drastically decreased with increasing carbonization temperature.

Iron-rich microorganism-enabled synthesis of magnetic biocarbon for efficient adsorption of diclofenac from aqueous solution

Microorganisms in nature have been suggested as effective synthetic platform for functional materials construction. In this study, we cultured a typical white rot fungus of Phanerochaete chrysosporium in iron-containing medium to obtain iron-rich biomass, serving as sole precursor for magnetic biocarbon synthesis. The accumulated iron in biomass reached to 4.6 wt%. After carbonization and activation, microporous magnetic biocarbon (Fe/BC) with high specific surface area of 1986 m² g^-1 was obtained. When applied as adsorbent for a model pharmaceutical (diclofenac sodium, DCF) removal from aqueous solution, a high adsorption capacity of 361.25 mg g^-1 was found for the developed Fe/BC. Systematic isotherm, kinetic, thermodynamic and recycle studies were conducted to investigate adsorption behaviors of DCF onto Fe/BC. This work not only provides a novel strategy for magnetic biocarbon construction, but also envisions new perspective on the utilization of a variety of microorganisms in nature for functional materials preparation.

Oxidative acid treatment and characterization of new biocarbon from sustainable Miscanthus biomass

Oxidative acid treatments of biochar produced from Miscanthus were performed in this study using nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and a mixture of both. The structural and morphological changes of the acid-treated biochar were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, organic elemental analysis and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Improved surface functionality of the treated biochars was observed in their respective FT-IR spectra through the presence of nitro and carboxylic acid functional groups. SEM-EDS and elemental analysis revealed a large increase in the oxygen to carbon ratio in the biochar, which was evidence of chemical oxidation from the acid treatment. Further, TGA study showed the reduced thermal stability of acid-treated biochar over 200°C due to the increased oxygen content. Acid treatments also influenced the graphitic structure of the biochar, as observed in the Raman spectra. The results suggest that biochar can be successfully functionalized for composite applications and provide a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based carbon additives.
