Effects of biodegradable (PBAT/PLA) and conventional (LDPE) mulch film residues on bacterial communities and metabolic functions in different agricultural soils

Soil health is a crucial aspect of sustainable agriculture and food production, necessitating attention to the ecological risks associated with substantial amounts of mulch film residues. Biodegradable mulch films (BDMs) carry the same risk of mulch film residues formation as low-density polyethylene (LDPE) mulch films during actual use. More information is needed to elucidate the specific impacts of mulch film residues on the soil environment. Integrated 16S rRNA gene sequencing and non-targeted metabolomics, this study revealed the response patterns of bacterial communities, metabolites, and metabolic functions in the soil from three different agricultural regions to the presence of mulch film residues. LDPE mulch film residues negatively impacted the bacterial communities in the soils of Heilongjiang (HLJ) and Yunnan (YN) and had a lesser impact on the metabolic spectrum in the soils of HLJ, YN, and Xinjiang (XJ). BDM residues had a greater negative impact on all three soils in terms of both the bacterial communities and metabolites. The impact of BDM treatment on the soils of HLJ, YN, and XJ increased sequentially in that order. It is recommended that, when promoting the use of biodegradable mulch films, a fuller assessment should be made, accounting for local soil properties.

Combined effects of biochar and biodegradable mulch film on chromium bioavailability and the agronomic characteristics of tobacco

Biochar (BC) and biodegradable mulch film (BMF) are both commonly used means of production in agriculture. In recent years, most studies have focused on the effects of BC or BMF on soil heavy metal pollution, while they have neglected the combined effects. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to examine the impacts of BMF, BC, and combined BMF and BC (CMB) on the mobility of chromium (Cr) and the agronomic characteristics of flue-cured tobacco. Compared with the control, BMF, BC, and CMB significantly reduced the concentrations of diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) extractable Cr in soils by 29.07-29.75%, 45.35-48.54%, and 34.21-37.92%, respectively. In comparison to the application of BMF and BC alone, co-application reduced the availability of Cr in soil via increasing the adsorption of soil Cr and soil enzyme activity, which resulted in the decrease of Cr content and bioconcentration factor and in plants. Moreover, the combined application increased the plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, total root area, root tip number, and root activity of tobacco, which leaded to increase in leaf and root biomass by 11.40-67.01% and 23.91-50.74%, respectively. Therefore, the application of CMB can reduce the heavy metal residues in tobacco leaves and improve tobacco yield and quality.

Aging of biodegradable-mulch-derived microplastics reduces their sorption capacity of atrazine

Degradable plastics are gradually regarded as alternatives of conventional, synthetic organic polymers to reduce the plastics or microplastics (MPs) pollution; however, the reports upon environmental risk of degradable plastics are still limited. In order to evaluate the potential vector effect of biodegradable MPs on coexisting contaminants, sorption of atrazine onto pristine and ultraviolet-aged (UV) polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate (PBAT) MPs and polybutylene succinate co-terephthalate (PBST) MPs were investigated. The results showed that, UV aging led to more wrinkles and cracks on the surface, increased homogeneous chains proportion, enhanced hydrophobicity, and enlarged crystallinity of both MPs. The sorption kinetics of atrazine to MPs fitted well into pseudo-first-order (R² = 0.809-0.996) and pseudo-second-order (R² = 0.889-0.994) models. In the concentration range of 0.5-25 mg L^-1, the sorption isotherm fitted into linear (R² = 0.967-0.996) and Freundlich model (R² = 0.972-0.997), indicating that the absorption partitioning was the dominant sorption mechanism. The partition coefficient (K_d) of atrazine to PBAT- MPs (40.11-66.01 L kg^-1) was higher than that of PBST- MPs (34.34-57.96 L kg^-1), and the K_d values of both MPs declined for aged MPs. The specific surface area, hydrophobicity, polarity and crystallinity of MPs jointly interpreted the changing sorption capacity of the MPs. In the present study, both aged PBAT- and aged PBST- MPs exhibited lower vector potential to atrazine than pristine MPs, suggesting reduced risk of being a pollutant carrier, which is of great significance for the development of biodegradable plastics.

Effects of biodegradable films on melon quality and substrate environment in solar greenhouse

With the increase in plastic pollution of farmland substrate, biodegradable mulch film research has become a hotspot. However, the degradation rate of biodegradable plastic film over the entire crop growth period is still unclear, as well as its impact on crop growth and product quality. Here, several properties of two kinds of composite biodegradable mulch films, PBAT/PLA-[S1] and PBAT/lignin-[S2], are studied with polyethylene-[PE] and uncovered substrate (CK) as controls. We tested the differences in morphological characterization, physical properties, and weight loss rate of the plastic films, as well as the effects of the different plastic films on melon yield and quality, substrate temperature and humidity, physical and chemical properties of the substrate, and substrate fungal species composition. Compared to PE, biodegradable plastic films S1 and S2 increased substrate temperature and the net photosynthetic rate of leaves. The results of substrate 18 s rDNA assay of CK, PE, S1, and S2 after 80 days of treatment and pre-treatment showed that a total of 12 fungal phylum, with 317 fungal genera were found, in which Ascomycota as the main phyla and Penicillium as the main genera. Compared with PE, the S2 treatment significantly increased the single fruit weight, central sugar content and soluble sugar of melon by 225.35 g, 1.26%, and 0.68%, respectively (p < 0.05). When buried for 240 d, the weight loss rate of S2 was significantly increased by 86.08% compared with PE (p < 0.05). From these results, we extrapolated that covering the substrate with the most biodegradable film, PBAT/lignin composite (10 μm), improved the yield and fruit quality of the melon in winter greenhouse production.

Macro- and micro- plastics in soil-plant system: Effects of plastic mulch film residues on wheat (Triticum aestivum) growth

Plastic residues have become a serious environmental problem in the regions with intensive use of plastic mulching. Even though plastic mulch is widely used, the effects of macro- and micro- plastic residues on the soil-plant system and the agroecosystem are largely unknown. In this study, low density polyethylene and one type of starch-based biodegradable plastic mulch film were selected and used as examples of macro- and micro- sized plastic residues. A pot experiment was performed in a climate chamber to determine what effect mixing 1% concentration of residues of these plastics with sandy soil would have on wheat growth in the presence and absence of earthworms. The results showed that macro- and micro- plastic residues affected both above-ground and below-ground parts of the wheat plant during both vegetative and reproductive growth. The type of plastic mulch films used had a strong effect on wheat growth with the biodegradable plastic mulch showing stronger negative effects as compared to polyethylene. The presence of earthworms had an overall positive effect on the wheat growth and chiefly alleviated the impairments made by plastic residues.
