Research on structural parameter optimization of elliptical bipolar linear shaped charge based on machine learning

Numerical simulation based on SPH method, compared with laboratory experiments, using the grey correlation theory to analyze the correlation between the parameters of the elliptical bipolar linear shaped charge and the performance of the shaped charge jet. The structure of shaped charge is optimized by machine learning to obtain the optimal structural parameters, and it is compared with the rock crack development of shaped charge blasting in practical application. The results show that the structural parameters of the shaped charge have the same influence on the jet head velocity, and there are certain differences in the impact on the jet length. The fitted curve of the support vector machine (SVM) regression model based on the genetic algorithm (GA) is high prediction accurate. By comparing the optimization results with the actual engineering application of the shaped charge structure, the rock breaking effect has been significantly improved, which has important guiding significance for the actual engineering application.

Platelet adhesion on commercially pure titanium plates in vitro III: effects of calcium phosphate-blasting on titanium plate biocompatibility

BACKGROUND

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is often used to improve surface biocompatibility. We previously found that platelets rapidly adhere to plain commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) plates in the absence, but not in the presence, of plasma proteins. To further expand on these findings, in the present study, we switched titanium plates from a plain surface to a rough surface that is blasted with calcium phosphate (CaP) powder and then examined platelet adhesion and activation.

METHODS

Elemental distribution in CaP-blasted cp-Ti plates was analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. PRP samples prepared from anticoagulated blood samples of six healthy, non-smoking adult male donors were loaded on CaP-blasted cp-Ti plates for 1 h and fixed for examination of platelet morphology and visualization of PDGF-B and platelet surface markers (CD62P, CD63) using scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy. Plain SUS316L stainless steel plates used in injection needles were also examined for comparison.

RESULTS

Significant amounts of calcium and phosphate were detected on the CaP-blasted cp-Ti surface. Platelets rapidly adhered to this surface, leading to higher activation. Platelets also adhered to the plain stainless surface; however, the levels of adhesion and activation were much lower than those observed on the CaP-blasted cp-Ti plate.

CONCLUSIONS

The CaP-blasted cp-Ti surface efficiently entraps and activates platelets. Biomolecules released from the activated platelets could be retained by the fibrin matrix on the surface to facilitate regeneration of the surrounding tissues. Thus, PRP immersion could not only eliminate surface air bubbles but also improve the biocompatibility of the implant surface.

Effects of alumina airborne-particle abrasion on the surface properties of CAD/CAM composites and bond strength to resin cement

The purpose of this study is to clarify physical and chemical changes in surfaces of CAD/CAM composites caused by alumina airborne-particle abrasion and its effect on adhesive bonding. Our study involved three dispersed filler (DF)-based and a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN)-based CAD/CAM composites. Changes in the surface morphologies of the composites were examined, and surface free energy (SFE) analysis was performed based on Owens-Wendt theory. The influence of the abrasion on the bond strengths of CAD/CAM composites to the resin cement was characterized by shear bond strength (SBS) test. The abrasion increased the roughness of the composites. The SFE analysis showed that the abrasion significantly increased the dispersive component but decreased the polar component of the SFE associated with the DF-based composites, while no change occurred for those of the PICN-based composite. The abrasion slightly improved the SBSs for the DF-based composites but not that of the PICN-based composite.

Bond strength of heat-pressed veneer ceramics to zirconia with various blasting conditions

Background/purpose

With the technology of dental prostheses and materials progress, the bond durability of the all-ceramic restoration system plays an important role in the oral environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the parameters of blasting on the shear bond strength between zirconia and pressed veneer ceramics.

Materials and methods

Zirconia was blasted with different alumina particle size subjected to two types of applied pressures. Heat-pressed and layered veneer ceramic blocks were served as an experimental group and control group, respectively. The shear strength of specimens after thermocycling for 20,000 times was also investigated to simulate oral environment.

Results

The results indicated that the surface roughness was increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing particle size of alumina and blasting pressure. The alumina particle size had statistically significant influence (P < 0.05) on shear strength of heat-pressed groups. Among heat-pressed ceramic specimens, the highest and lowest shear strength could be obtained when 50 μm of alumina was used at pressure of 0.3 MPa and 110 μm of alumina was used at 0.5 MPa, respectively. The negligible effect of thermal cycle on shear strength of heat-pressed groups can be seen.

Conclusion

Blasting with 50 μm of alumina at 0.3 MPa could enhance the bond strength between zirconia and veneer ceramics.

Assessing the fate of explosives derived nitrate in mine waste rock dumps using the stable isotopes of oxygen and nitrogen

Ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) mixed with fuel oil is a common blasting agent used to fragment rock into workable size fractions at mines throughout the world. The decomposition and oxidation of undetonated explosives can result in high NO₃^- concentrations in waters emanating from waste rock dumps. We used the stable isotopic composition of NO₃^- (δ¹⁵N- and δ¹⁸O-NO₃^-) to define and quantify the controls on NO₃^- composition in waste rock dumps by studying water-unsaturated and saturated conditions at nine coal waste rock dumps located in the Elk Valley, British Columbia, Canada. Estimates of the extent of nitrification of NH₄NO₃ in oxic zones in the dumps, initial NO₃^- concentrations prior to denitrification, and the extent of NO₃^- removal by denitrification in sub-oxic to anoxic zones are provided. δ¹⁵N data from unsaturated waste rock dumps confirm NO₃^- is derived from blasting. δ¹⁵N- and δ¹⁸O-NO₃^- data show extensive denitrification can occur in saturated waste rock and in localized zones of elevated water saturation and low oxygen concentrations in unsaturated waste rock. At the mine dump scale, the extent of denitrification in the unsaturated waste rock was inferred from water samples collected from underlying rock drains.

Development of GP and GEP models to estimate an environmental issue induced by blasting operation

Air overpressure (AOp) is one of the most adverse effects induced by blasting in the surface mines and civil projects. So, proper evaluation and estimation of the AOp is important for minimizing the environmental problems resulting from blasting. The main aim of this study is to estimate AOp produced by blasting operation in Miduk copper mine, Iran, developing two artificial intelligence models, i.e., genetic programming (GP) and gene expression programming (GEP). Then, the accuracy of the GP and GEP models has been compared to multiple linear regression (MLR) and three empirical models. For this purpose, 92 blasting events were investigated, and subsequently, the AOp values were carefully measured. Moreover, in each operation, the values of maximum charge per delay and distance from blast points, as two effective parameters on the AOp, were measured. After predicting by the predictive models, their performance prediction was checked in terms of variance account for (VAF), coefficient of determination (CoD), and root mean square error (RMSE). Finally, it was found that the GEP with VAF of 94.12%, CoD of 0.941, and RMSE of 0.06 is a more precise model than other predictive models for the AOp prediction in the Miduk copper mine, and it can be introduced as a new powerful tool for estimating the AOp resulting from blasting.

Evaluation of different surface treatments on fiber post cemented with a self-adhesive system

Surface treatment of fiber-reinforced posts can increase adhesion, especially on the post/resin cement interface. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on fiber post cemented with a self-adhesive system. Sixty fiberglass epoxy resin posts were cleaned, dried and divided into 6 groups (n=10): Control (no surface treatment), silane (silane coupling agent was applied homogeneously on surface), 24% hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) (immersion during 1min), blasting (blasting with aluminum oxide for 30s), NH₃ plasma (plasma treatment for 3min) and HMDSO plasma (plasma treatment for 15min). After the treatments, posts were inserted into a silicon matrix that was filled with the resin cement RelyX U200. Afterwards, the post/cement specimens were cut perpendicularly to the long axis of the posts into six 1.0mm thick discs and submitted to a push-out bond strength (POBS) test. Failure pattern was classified in 5 types: type I: cohesive in post; type II: cohesive in cement; type III: cohesive post and cement; type IV: adhesive post/cement; and type V: mixed (association between cohesive and adhesive). Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD post hoc test (α=0.05). Silane (15.94±6.5), blasting (13.13±3.6), NH₃ plasma (14.44±4.0) and HMDSO plasma (13.23±5.3) showed higher POBS when compared to control (p<0.05) and similar among them. H₂O₂ (9.40±4.0) treatment showed POBS values statistically similar to control (9.65±3.6). Failures were predominantly cohesive post and cement, type III, in all groups. In conclusion, surface treatments influenced in the adhesion of fiberglass post with the self-adhesive cement RelyX U200. Silane, blasting with aluminum oxide and plasmas (NH₃ and HMDSO) showed results superior to 24% hydrogen peroxide.

Modelling blast induced damage from a fully coupled explosive charge

This paper presents one of the latest developments in the blasting engineering modelling field-the Hybrid Stress Blasting Model (HSBM). HSBM includes a rock breakage engine to model detonation, wave propagation, rock fragmentation, and muck pile formation. Results from two controlled blasting experiments were used to evaluate the code's ability to predict the extent of damage. Results indicate that the code is capable of adequately predicting both the extent and shape of the damage zone associated with the influence of point-of-initiation and free-face boundary conditions. Radial fractures extending towards a free face are apparent in the modelling output and matched those mapped after the experiment. In the stage 2 validation experiment, the maximum extent of visible damage was of the order of 1.45 m for the fully coupled 38-mm emulsion charge. Peak radial velocities were predicted within a relative difference of only 1.59% at the nearest history point at 0.3 m from the explosive charge. Discrepancies were larger further away from the charge, with relative differences of -22.4% and -42.9% at distances of 0.46 m and 0.61 m, respectively, meaning that the model overestimated particle velocities at these distances. This attenuation deficiency in the modelling produced an overestimation of the damage zone at the corner of the block due to excessive stress reflections. The extent of visible damage in the immediate vicinity of the blasthole adequately matched the measurements.
