Molybdenum sulfide Co-catalytic Fenton reaction for rapid and efficient inactivation of Escherichia coli

As a typical advanced oxidation technology, the Fenton reaction has been employed for the disinfection, owing to the strong oxidizability of hydroxyl radicals (·OH). However, the conventional Fenton system always exhibits a low H₂O₂ decomposition efficiency, leading to a low production yield of ·OH, which makes the disinfection effect unsatisfactory. Herein, we develop a molybdenum sulfide (MoS₂) co-catalytic Fenton reaction for rapid and highly efficient inactivation of Escherichia coli K-12 (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). As a co-catalyst in the Fe(II)/H₂O₂ Fenton system, MoS₂ can greatly facilitate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle reaction by the exposed Mo⁴⁺ active sites, which significantly improves the H₂O₂ decomposition efficiency for the ·OH production. As a result, the MoS₂ co-catalytic Fenton system can reach up to 83.37% of inactivation rate of E. coli just in 1 min and 100% of inactivation rate within 30 min, which increased by 2.5 times than that of the conventional Fenton reaction. Furthermore, the ·OH as the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) in MoS₂ co-catalytic Fenton reaction was measured and verified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and photoluminescence (PL). It is demonstrated an increased amount of ·OH generated from the decomposition of H₂O₂ in the presence of MoS₂, which is responsible for the rapid and efficient inactivation of E. coli and S. aureus. This study provides a new perspective for rapid and highly efficient inactivation of bacteria in environmental remediation.

Electrochemical aptasensor for thrombin using co-catalysis of hemin/G-quadruplex DNAzyme and octahedral Cu2O-Au nanocomposites for signal amplification

In this work, novel octahedral Cu₂O-Au nanocomposites were synthesized and first applied in an electrochemical aptasensor to detect thrombin (TB) with the aid of a DNAzyme for signal amplification. The octahedral Cu₂O-Au nanocomposites have not only simultaneously served as signal amplifying molecules but have also been utilized as an ideal loading platform to immobilize a large number of electroactive substances and recognition probes. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were grown directly on the surface of the octahedral Cu₂O nanocrystals, and the Cu₂O-Au nanocomposites obtained had the advantages of large surface areas and excellent biocompatibilities. The hemin/G-quadruplex, which was formed by intercalating hemin into the amino terminated thrombin binding aptamer (NH₂-TBA), and the electroactive toluidine blue (Tb) were immobilized onto the Cu₂O-Au nanocomposite surfaces through a stable Au-N bond. AuNPs, Cu₂O and hemin/G-quadruplex co-catalyse the H₂O₂ in the working buffer to promote the electron transfer of Tb as a multiple signal amplification strategy in order to improve the performance of the electrochemical aptasensor. Under optimal conditions, the designed aptasensor exhibited sensitive detection of TB from 100 fM to 20nM with a lower detection limit of 23fM. This proposed aptasensor exhibited good sensitivity, high specificity and acceptable reproducibility and could be widely applied in bioassay analysis.

Facilely synthesized cobalt doped hydroxyapatite as hydroxyl promoted peroxymonosulfate activator for degradation of Rhodamine B

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is a promising supporter of catalyst due to its potential in immobilizing metals stably. HAP supported cobalt-based catalyst (Co-HAP) was synthesized via a facile ion exchange-calcination method to reduce the Co leaching. The synthesized Co-HAP was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cobalt ions were incorporated into HAP structure and Co₃O₄ on HAP surface. Co-HAP showed satisfactory performance in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for eliminating Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution. Co-HAP even revealed a better activity than that of CoFe₂O₄. •OH, SO₄^•- and ¹O₂ were all involved in RhB degradation and ¹O₂ played a leading role. High content of surface oxygen groups could be found on Co-HAP after RhB degradation, which might be resulted from the high amounts of hydroxyl groups. The presence of hydroxyl groups performed the co-catalytic activity of PMS activation in Co-HAP/PMS system.

Novel Fenton process of Co-catalyst Co9S8 quantum dots for highly efficient removal of organic pollutants

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been widely accepted as an efficient and promising strategy for treating organic pollutants, is mainly dominated by hydroxyl radicals (•OH); however, its further practical application has been hindered by its low decomposition rate of H₂O₂. Hence, for the first time, we propose an eco-friendly and facile synthesis methodology synthesize water-soluble Co₉S₈ quantum dots (QDs) derived from commercial cobalt disulfide (CoS₂), which can serve as excellent co-catalysts to dramatically enhance the decomposition rate of H₂O₂. It is demonstrated that the conversion rate of H₂O₂ into •OH is ca. 80.02% promoted by Co₉S₈ QDs, whereas the conventional Fenton process is ca. 34.9%. The result shows that unsaturated edged S atoms on the surface of Co₉S₈ play a pivotal role in this enhancement, where the number of protons will react with sulfur atoms to form H₂S and expose reductive metallic active sites to accelerate the Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ conversion. In addition, to tackle the issue for difficult recovery of liquid quantum dots, the magnetic Co₉S₈ QDs/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are particularly synthesized, which show excellent performance for degradation of 20 mg/L Rhodamine B (RhB). Moreover, the TOC degradation rate can remain stable at 80% even after five cycles. It is expected that this work will provide a new pathway of thinking in the Fenton process and impulse the usage of liquid quantum dots in practical AOPs application.

A novel Fe/Mo co-catalyzed graphene-based nanocomposite to activate peroxymonosulfate for highly efficient degradation of organic pollutants

A novel 3D α-FeOOH@MoS₂/rGO nanocomposite was successfully fabricated by a simple in situ hydrothermal method. It is a highly efficient heterogeneous catalyst in activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for rapid degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), with 99.9% of RhB removed within 20 min. The introduction of rGO contributes to uniform dispersion and sufficient contact of α-FeOOH and MoS₂ nanosheets. Highly active Mo(IV) enhances the reduction of Fe(III), improves Fe(III)/Fe(II) conversion and promotes the generation of O₂1, which ensures an improved catalytic activity. MoS₂/rGO hybrid can effectively solve the problem of material reunion and make α-FeOOH exhibit excellent catalytic performance. The α-FeOOH@MoS₂-rGO/PMS system is a co-catalytic system based on the active components of α-FeOOH and MoS₂. The main reactive oxygen species in the α-FeOOH@MoS₂-rGO/PMS system are O₂1, SO₄^.- and ⋅O₂^-, which contribute to a high reactivity over a wide range of pH (5-9). Besides, this system is highly resistant to anions (Cl^-, SO₄^2-) and natural organic matter (humic acid), and can be widely used for degradation of common organic pollutants. The α-FeOOH@MoS₂/rGO is a promising Fenton-like catalyst for refractory organic wastewater treatment.
