A review of the studies on nonvisual lighting effects in the field of physiological anthropology

Here, we review the history and the trends in the research on the nonvisual effect of light in the field of physiological anthropology. Research on the nonvisual effect of light in the field of physiological anthropology was pioneered by Sato and colleagues in the early 1990s. These authors found that the color temperature of light affected physiological functions in humans. The groundbreaking event with regard to the study of nonvisual effects of light was the discovery of the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells in the mammalian retina in the early 2000s. The interest of the physiological anthropology scientific community in the nonvisual effects of light has been increasing since then. A total of 61 papers on nonvisual effects of light were published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (including its predecessor journals) until October 2018, 14 papers (1.4/year) in the decade from 1992 to 2001, 45 papers (2.8/year) in the 16 years between 2002 and 2017, and two papers in 2018 (January-October). The number of papers on this topic has been increasing in recent years. We categorized all papers according to light conditions, such as color temperature of light, light intensity, and monochromatic light. Among the 61 papers, 11 papers were related to color temperature, 20 papers were related to light intensity, 18 papers were related to monochromatic light, and 12 papers were classified as others. We provide an overview of these papers and mention future research prospects.

Effects of Color Temperature and Brightness on Electroencephalogram Alpha Activity in a Polychromatic Light-emitting Diode

Objective

It has been reported that working and learning efficiency might be increased through artificially controlling the color temperature and brightness of light. However, the neurological bases of these outcomes are not well established. Our study was designed to observe whether electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha frequency, as a candidate biological marker, demonstrates significant changes in response to alterations of specific light parameters.

Methods

Thirty-two healthy subjects performed cognitive tasks under four different polychromatic light conditions: a combination of two different levels of color temperature (2766K vs. 5918K) and brightness (300 lux vs. 600 lux). Spectrum analyses were performed on alpha frequency.

Results

Subjects reported that they felt more pleasant in bright conditions and more relaxed in warm color temperature conditions. Our findings indicate that alpha power increases in warm, low-light and cool, high-light conditions, and there is a significant interaction between color temperature and brightness.

Conclusion

EEGs might serve as a useful biological marker for further research related to the effects of polychromatic light on cognitive function.

Interaction effect of LED color temperatures and light-protective additive packaging on photo-oxidation in milk displayed in retail dairy case

Effect of varied LED color temperatures on photo-oxidation in 2% fat milk and protection efficiency of packaging with and without light-protective additives (LPA) under different color temperatures was firstly evaluated. Riboflavin (Rb) is one of the critical photo-sensitizers in 2% milk when exposed to LED light. Higher color temperature with higher relative intensity of Rb absorbance region resulted in lower Rb and vitamin A retention, lower dissolved oxygen content, and higher TBARS value in milk packaged with non-LPA packaging. Yellow pigmented packaging that completely blocked the Rb absorbance region of all three LED color temperatures successfully reduced the rate of degradation of milk nutrients and flavor. TiO2-added packaging partially block the destructive light wavelength; higher level of TiO2 provided a longer protection on milk freshness. Combination of appropriate LED color temperature and LPA-packaging provided a cost-effective solution for minimizing photo-oxidation in retail dairy case.

Color temperature's impact on task performance and brainwaves of school-age children

[Purpose] This study investigated color temperature’s impact on task performance. It presents a scientific analysis of brainwave and task performance time changes, and the results of a self-report type survey. [Subjects] Twenty-four elementary school fifth-grade boys and girls with no visual problems participated in the experiment. [Methods] Physiological reaction times of task performance were measured in a laboratory that could fix and maintain color temperature. Brainwave changes and the task performance times were measured, and a self-report questionnaire was conducted in order to measure of emotional reactions. [Results] Regarding the brainwave changes associated with color temperature, alpha waves were emitted in the O2 area when puzzle tasks were illuminated by orange light and low and high beta waves were emitted in the F3 area under white light. Five items (Brilliant, Soft, Lively, Relaxed, Open) were reported predominantly in responses to orange light in the self-report questionnaire. [Conclusion] The results of this study show that relaxation and stability are not assured when the color temperature is low, and that concentration and cognitive activity are not necessarily easier when the color temperature is high. The color temperature change when performing tasks promoted emotional factors more than brainwave, a biological change.

Examinations of the methods used to power supply of different light sources and their effect on bioelectrical brain activity

OBJECTIVE

The article represents the preliminary study, with the aim of the experiment being to examine whether different types of light sources used commonly in building interiors combined with various color temperature have an effect on EEG activity. The effect of frequency pulsation and color temperature on brain activity in EEG examinations in the beta 2 band was assumed.

MATERIAL/PARTICIPANTS

Twenty healthy men aged 19-25 years participated in the experiment.

METHODS

The research stand was lit by: LED diodes with color temperatures of 3000K, 4200K, 6500K, with the power supplied using the pulse width modulation (PWM) method with the current frequency of 122Hz, linear fluorescent tubes (3000K, 6500K), with the power supplied with the frequency of 50Hz and 52kHz from the electromagnetic and electronic ballasts, and the conventional light bulb, with the power supplied directly from the mains electricity, used as a reference light. System Flex 30 apparatus with TrueScan software was used to record the EEG signal. The examination used two factors (speed and accuracy) of the Kraepelin's work curve to describe changes in work performance for various types of lighting.

RESULTS

The results demonstrate that the use of different types of emission of light and color temperature of the light have an effect on bioelectrical brain activity and work performance.

CONCLUSIONS

The highest activity of brain waves concerns the beta band in the frequency range of 21-22Hz, regardless of the type of the light source (LED, fluorescent tube). The methods used to supply power and color temperature of fluorescent tubes do not significantly affect bioelectrical brain activity during "work", but previous lighting with fluorescent tubes during work has an essential effect on bioelectrical brain activity during rest. Regardless of the color temperature, LED lighting with PWM power supply leads to the highest bioelectrical activity (mainly in the range of 21-22Hz) in the brain during work and rest, which might suggests the usefulness of this method of supplying power for everyday work. Incandescent light does not affect the bioelectrical brain activity during work and rest.

The effects of different lighting conditions on the accuracy of intraoral scanning

PURPOSE

This study aimed to investigate the extent to which intraoral scanning are affected by clinical conditions, and whether ambient lighting and different color temperatures have an impact on the accuracy of intraoral scanner, as well as to evaluate scanning time.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Twelve different environments were created using various ambient lighting conditions (0, 500, 1000 and 1500 lux) and color temperatures (white, blue and yellow). A partially edentulous mandibular model with two implants and a three-unit bridge was scanned under each environment until 10 digital models were obtained, and scanning times were recorded using a virtual stopwatch. A 3D analysis was performed on the obtained digital models, and the data were analyzed using a software. The generalized linear model analysis and Tukey multiple comparison test were used to analyse the data (P < .05).

RESULTS

The effect of lux, color temperature, and scanning times on RMS data was found to be significant (P < .001). The mean RMS value was the highest in the 0 lux group and the lowest in the 500 lux group. Regarding the color temperature, the highest RMS value was in the white color group and the lowest in the yellow color group. Scanning times were similar among the 0, 500 and 1000 lux groups, with a significant increase in the 1500 lux group.

CONCLUSION

Different ambient lighting conditions and color temperatures have significant effect on the accuracy of intraoral scanning.

Investigating the effect of road lighting color temperature on road visibility in night foggy conditions

Night foggy road conditions limit visibility distance of drivers and are associated with higher accident and fatality rates than other weather conditions. Therefore, ensuring road visibility in night foggy road is critical. However, it is difficult to reproduce fog on a real road and only a few studies have researched foggy road conditions and visibility in a laboratory as a small scale. Previous studies have suggested that a color temperature of road lighting is related to visibility. However, many have only investigated the effects of relative transmittance in limited indoor experiments, and the impacts of differences in transmittance on visibility have thus far not been studied in real-scale conditions. In this study, a real-scale test involving 91 subjects was conducted to investigate how the visibility distance under night foggy conditions is affected by different lighting color temperatures. Based on the real scale experiments, the correlation between the visibility distance and lighting color temperature was derived. Road lighting with a low color temperature (i.e., yellow) was found to provide longer visibility distances than that with high color temperatures under night foggy conditions having measured visibility of approximately 102m. The impact of the differences in lighting color increased as the visibility distance decreased. In contrast, road lighting with a high color temperature (i.e., white) improved driver visibility in higher-visibility conditions. Therefore, this study confirmed the correlation between lighting color temperature and visibility distance for different visibility conditions and could serve as a foundation for the development of roadway design standards as well as future studies.

Influence of ambient light conditions on intraoral scanning: A systematic review

PURPOSE

To systematically assess the influence of ambient light on the accuracy and scanning time of intraoral scanning.

STUDY SELECTION

The present systematic review (CRD 42022346672) was registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) and was performed based on the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020. Electronic searches were conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE, complemented by gray literature, references, and citations of the included studies. The primary outcome was accuracy, and the scanning time was a secondary outcome. Owing to the high heterogeneity, the pooled data were analyzed descriptively.

RESULTS

Six in vitro and two in vivo experiments were performed. Three in vitro studies reported both the accuracy and scanning time of the intraoral scans, whereas the remaining studies exclusively evaluated the accuracy. The studies mainly investigated the influence of illumination levels (0-11000 lux) on intraoral scanning. Intraoral scans revealed optimal accuracy at 1000-lux illumination for complete-arch dentition scans, whereas the influence of illumination levels on 4-unit or shorter scans was not clinically significant. The intraoral scans obtained using confocal microscopy were less affected by the illumination levels than those obtained using the active triangulation technique. Furthermore, the scanning time tended to increase with increasing illumination.

CONCLUSIONS

Evidently from the limited number of studies conducted, ambient light illumination had considerable influence on the accuracy and scanning time of intraoral scanning, which appeared to be related to the scanning range and imaging technology.

Development of the RGB LEDs color mixing mechanism for stability the color temperature at different projection distances

In lighting application, the color mixing of the RGB LEDs can provide more color selection in correlated color temperature and color rendering. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose a RGB color mixing mechanism by applying the mechanism design. Three sets of lamp-type RGB LEDs are individually installed on three four-bar linkages. A crank is used to drive three groups of RGB LEDs lamp-type to project lights onto a single plane in order to mix the lights. And, simulations of the illuminance and associated color temperatures are conducted by changing the distance to the projection plane, under the assumption that the stability of the color temperature of the projected light does not change according to the projecting height. Thus, the effect of change in the color temperature on color determination by the humans' eyes was avoided. The success of the proposed method will allow medical personnel to choose suitable wavelengths and color temperatures according to the particular requirements of their medical-examination environments.

Light environment affects the efficiency of surgical suture training

BACKGROUND

Suture knotting is the basis of surgical skills. In the process of surgical skills learning, the surrounding environment, especially the light, will affect the efficiency of learning. This study investigated the effect of optical environment on the learning of stitching and knotting skills.

METHODS

A total of 44 medical students were randomly divided into four groups and participated in the study of suture knotting in four different optical environments. During the process, we assess objective pressure level by testing salivary amylase activity Likert scale and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) was used to estimate the subjective psychological state and overall skill mastery in surgical suturing respectively.

RESULTS

Under high illumination conditions (700 lx), the salivary amylase activity of the high color temperature group (6000 K) was significantly higher than that of the low color temperature group (4000 K) (p < 0.0001). Similarly, under low illumination (300 lx), the salivary amylase activity of the high color temperature group was also significantly higher than that of the low color temperature group (p < 0.05). The student under high illumination conditions (700 lx) and the low color temperature (6000 K) have an autonomy score between 37-45, which is significantly higher compared to the other three groups (p < 0.0001). Group 2 has an average OSCE score of 95.09, which were significantly higher than those of the other three groups (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

High illumination combined with low color temperature is considered as the optimal training conditions, promoting trainees' optimism, reducing stress levels, and enhancing learning efficiency. These results highlight the pivotal role of light environment in improving the quality and efficiency of surgical skills training.

Underwater power compensated white light source based on synthetic white laser

The semiconductor white laser light source is used as a light source for underwater illumination. The required standard color temperature of white light is obtained at the underwater target surface. We studied the power compensation of a synthetic white laser source and its application to underwater illumination. First, the power ratios of the red (638 nm), green (520 nm), and blue (450 nm) lasers at a color temperature of 6500 K were obtained by using chromaticity theory. Next, the three-color and synthetic white laser parameters were obtained with transmission distance, according to the exponential attenuation characteristics of different light in clear water and seawater medium. The three-color laser power at the output was compensated, and the underwater target illumination surface reached the standard 6500 K color temperature of the white laser, improving the illumination. Finally, an experimental system for underwater white laser illumination based on power compensation was established. The errors between experimental and theoretical results of color temperature and illuminance are no more than 0.43% and 22.15%. This power-compensated synthetic white laser light source has both the advantages of long-range underwater detection and the spectral advantages of LED white light sources. The white laser light source meets specific requirements by compensating for power and optimizing white light characteristics for underwater lighting applications.
