All-BN distributed Bragg reflectors fabricated in a single MOCVD process

Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBR) are well-established photonic structures that are used in many photonic applications. However, most of the DBRs are based on different materials or require post-process etching which can hinder integration with other components in the final photonic structure. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of DBR structures consisting only of undoped boron nitride (BN) layers with high refractive index contrast by using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). This has been achieved in a single process, without the need for any post-process etching. The difference in the refractive index of the component BN layers stems from different degrees of porosity of the individual BN layers, which is a direct result of a different growth temperature. The fabricated DBR structures consist of 15.5 pairs of BN layers and exhibit a reflectance of 87 ± 1% at the maximum. The wavelength of maximum reflectance can be tuned from 500 nm up to the infrared region (IR), by simply adjusting the growth periods of subsequent BN layers. We also demonstrate that the fabricated structures can be used to create an optical microcavity. The fabricated DBRs are very promising candidates for future applications, for example in combination with single-photon emitters in h-BN, which could allow the building of a cavity-based all-BN single-photon source.

Quality of life in breast cancer survivors: An assessment of international breast cancer dragon boat racers

Resistance exercise is deemed safe for women recovering from conventional breast cancer therapies but few clinicians are aware that dragon boat racing, as a form of resistive exercise, is available to the breast cancer community. The objectives of this study were to 1) increase clinician awareness of dragon boat racing (DBR) in breast cancer survivors as a community-based physical activity, and 2) evaluate quality of life (QOL) in breast cancer survivors with or without lymphedema who participate in DBR. This prospective, observational study surveyed 1,069 international breast cancer dragon boat racers from eight countries to compare function, activity, and participation in women with and without selfreported lymphedema using the Lymph-ICF questionnaire. Seventy-one percent of women (n=758) completed the questionnaires. Results revealed significantly higher Lymph-ICF scores in the lymphedema participants, signifying reduced QOL, when compared to the nonlymphedema participants (p<0.05), except for "go on vacation" for which no statistical difference was reported (p=0.20). International breast cancer survivors with lymphedema participating in DBR at an international competition had reduced function, limited activity, and restricted participation compared to participants without lymphedema. Clinicians should consider utilizing DBR as a community-based activity to support exercise and physical activity after a breast cancer diagnosis.

In vivo changes in adjacent segment kinematics after lumbar decompression and fusion

The pathogenesis of lumbar adjacent segment disease is thought to be secondary to altered biomechanics resulting from fusion. Direct in vivo evidence for altered biomechanics following lumbar fusion is lacking. This study's aim was to describe in vivo kinematics of the superior adjacent segment relative to the fused segment before and after lumbar fusion. This study analyzed seven patients with symptomatic lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (5 M, 2F; age 65 ± 5.1 years) using a biplane radiographic imaging system. Each subject performed two to three trials of continuous flexion of their torso according to established protocols. Synchronized biplane radiographs were acquired at 20 images per second one month before and six months after single-level fusion at L4-L5 or L5-S1, or two-level fusion at L3-L5 or L4-S1. A previously validated volumetric model-based tracking process was used to track the position and orientation of vertebrae in the radiographic images. Intervertebral flexion/extension and AP translation (slip) at the superior adjacent segment were calculated over the entire dynamic flexion activity. Skin-mounted surface markers were tracked using conventional motion analysis and used to determine torso flexion. Change in adjacent segment kinematics after fusion was determined at corresponding angles of dynamic torso flexion. Changes in adjacent segment motion varied across patients, however, all patients maintained or increased the amount of adjacent segment slip or intervertebral flexion/extension. No patients demonstrated both decreased adjacent segment slip and decreased rotation. This study suggests that short-term changes in kinematics at the superior adjacent segment after lumbar fusion appear to be patient-specific.

Room temperature fabrication of dielectric Bragg reflectors composed of a CaF2/ZnS multilayered coating

We describe the design, fabrication, and characterization of mechanically stable, reproducible, and highly reflecting distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) composed of thermally evaporated thin films of calcium fluoride (CaF2) and zinc sulfide (ZnS). CaF2 and ZnS were chosen as the low and high refractive index components of the multilayer DBR structures, with n = 1.43 and n = 2.38 respectively, because neither material requires substrate heating during the deposition process in order to produce optical quality thin films. DBRs consisting of seven pairs of CaF2 and ZnS layers, were fabricated with thicknesses of 96 and 58 nm, respectively, as characterized by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), and exhibited a center wavelength of λc = 550 nm and peak reflectance exceeding 99%. The layers showed good adhesion to each other and to the glass substrate, resulting in mechanically stable DBR coatings. Complete optical microcavities consisting of two such DBR coatings and a CaF2 spacer layer between them could be fabricated in a single deposition run. Optically, these structures exhibited a resonator quality factor of Q > 160. When a CaF2/ZnS DBR was grown, without heating the substrate during deposition, on top of a thin film containing the fluorescent dye Rhodamine 6G, the fluorescence intensity showed no degradation compared to an uncoated film, in contrast to a MgF2/ZnS DBR coating grown with substrate heating which showed a 92% reduction in signal. The ability to fabricate optical quality CaF2/ZnS DBRs without substrate heating, as introduced here, can therefore enable formation of low-loss high-reflectivity coatings on top of more delicate heat-sensitive materials such as organics and other nanostructured emitters, and hence facilitate the development of nanoemitter-based microcavity device applications.
