Distinct Signatures of Electron-Phonon Coupling Observed in the Lattice Thermal Conductivity of NbSe3 Nanowires

The last two decades have seen tremendous progress in quantitative understanding of several major phonon scattering mechanisms (phonon-phonon, phonon-boundary, phonon-defects), as they are the determinant factors in lattice thermal transport, which is critical for the proper functioning of various electronic and energy conversion devices. However, the roles of another major scattering mechanism, electron-phonon (e-ph) interactions, remain elusive. This is largely due to the lack of solid experimental evidence for the effects of e-ph scattering in the lattice thermal conductivity for the material systems studied thus far. Here we show distinct signatures in the lattice thermal conductivity observed below the charge density wave transition temperatures in NbSe₃ nanowires, which cannot be recaptured without considering e-ph scattering. Our findings can serve as the cornerstone for quantitative understanding of the e-ph scattering effects on lattice thermal transport in many technologically important materials.

Ternary superconducting hydrides stabilized via Th and Ce elements at mild pressures

The discovery of covalent H3S and clathrate structure LaH10 with excellent superconducting critical temperatures at high pressures has facilitated a multitude of research on compressed hydrides. However, their superconducting pressures are too high (generally above 150 GPa), thereby hindering their application. In addition, making room-temperature superconductivity close to ambient pressure in hydrogen-based superconductors is challenging. In this work, we calculated the chemically "pre-compressed" Be-H by heavy metals Th and Ce to stabilize the superconducting phase near ambient pressure. An unprecedented ThBeH8 (CeBeH8) with a "fluorite-type" structure was predicted to be thermodynamically stable above 69 GPa (76 GPa), yielding a T c of 113 K (28 K) decompressed to 7 GPa (13 GPa) by solving the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg equations. Be-H vibrations play a vital role in electron-phonon coupling and structural stability of these ternary hydrides. Our results will guide further experiments toward synthesizing ternary hydride superconductors at mild pressures.

Excited electron and spin dynamics in topological insulator: A perspective from ab initio non-adiabatic molecular dynamics

We perform an ab initio non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the non-equilibrium spin and electron dynamics in a prototypical topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3. Different from the ground state, we reveal that backscattering can happen in an oscillating manner between time-reversal pair topological surface states (TSSs) in the non-equilibrium dynamics. Analysis shows the phonon excitation induces orbital composition change by electron-phonon interaction, which further stimulates spin canting through spin-orbit coupling. The spin canting of time-reversal pair TSSs leads to the non-zero non-adiabatic coupling between them and then issues in backscattering. Both the spin canting and backscattering result in ultrafast spin relaxation with a timescale around 100 fs. This study provides critical insights into the non-equilibrium electron and spin dynamics in TI at the ab initio level and paves a way for the design of ultrafast spintronic materials.

Giant phonon anomaly in topological nodal-line semimetals

The band topology has been revealed to bring a wide array of novel electronic transport phenomena, but its interaction with phonon properties remains largely unexplored. Here we propose that continuous topological singularities with variable Fermi wave vectors can lead to giant effects on phonon transport in nodal-line semimetals. Using first-principles calculations, we show that such an exotic feature is present in a well-known topological semimetal ZrSiSe, in which the unique nodal-line can guarantee considerable momentum-continuous phonons to satisfy the stringent condition of Kohn anomaly and thereby dramatically strengthen the electron-phonon coupling. Moreover, the momentum-continuous anomaly phonons with eight arms of vertical Fermi surface drive intense phonon-electron scattering that is even comparable with intrinsic phonon-phonon scattering, giving rise to a reduction of ∼45% on room temperature lattice thermal conductivity. Our findings not only uncover giant phonon anomaly in topological nodal-line semimetals but also provide guidance for exploring the vital influence of electronic band topology on thermal transport bridged by the electron-phonon coupling.

Exfoliation and optical properties of S = 1 triangular lattice antiferromagnet NiGa2S4

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials have been an exciting area of research ever since scientists first isolated a single layer of graphene. Single layer magnetic materials can provide a pathway for vdW heterostructures with magnetic properties. While most of the magnetic vdW materials exhibit ordering transitions in the bulk, here we report a successful exfoliation of a triangular lattice S = 1 antiferromagnet NiGa[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text], which already demonstrates exotic magnetism in the bulk material. We establish the number of layers of the material by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and detail a careful characterization using Raman and optical spectroscopy to demonstrate how the optical, electronic, and structural properties of NiGa[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] change as a function of sample thickness. Optical measurements and electronic structure calculations of bulk versus monolayer NiGa[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] confirm the material to be a Mott insulator with an electronic gap of about 1.5 eV, which slightly increases for layers below 10 L. We conclude with a theoretical analysis of the possibility of doping monolayer NiGa[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] by proximity to a metal.
