The application of P-modified biochar in wastewater remediation: A state-of-the-art review

Phosphorus modified biochar (P-BC) is an effective adsorbent for wastewater remediation, which has attracted widespread attention due to its low cost, vast source, unique surface structure, and abundant functional groups. However, there is currently no comprehensive analysis and review of P-BC in wastewater remediation. In this study, a detailed introduction is given to the synthesis method of P-BC, as well as the effects of pyrolysis temperature and residence time on physical and chemical properties and adsorption performance of the material. Meanwhile, a comprehensive investigation and evaluation were conducted on the different biomass types and phosphorus sources used to synthesize P-BC. This article also systematically compared the adsorption efficiency differences between P-BC and raw biochar, and summarized the adsorption mechanism of P-BC in removing pollutants from wastewater. In addition, the effects of P-BC composite with other materials (element co-doping, polysaccharide stabilizers, microbial loading, etc.) on physical and chemical properties and pollutant adsorption capacity of the materials were investigated. Some emerging applications of P-BC were also introduced, including supercapacitors, CO2 adsorbents, carbon sequestration, soil heavy metal remediation, and soil fertility improvement. Finally, some valuable suggestions and prospects were proposed for the future research direction of P-BC to achieve the goal of multiple utilization.

Adjunctive fecal microbiota transplantation in supportive oncology: Emerging indications and considerations in immunocompromised patients

FMT has gained enormous momentum in the treatment of acute inflammatory and infectious diseases. Despite an encouraging safety profile, FMT has been met with caution in the oncological setting due to perceived infectious risks in immunocompromised patients. Theoretical risks aside, the application of FMT in oncology may stand to benefit patients, via modulation of treatment efficacy and the mitigation of treatment complications. Here, we summarize most recent safety data of FMT in immunocompromised cohorts, including people with cancer, highlighting that FMT may actually provide protection against bacterial translocation via introduction of a diverse microbiome and restoration of epithelial defenses. We also discuss the emerging translational applications of FMT within supportive oncology, including the prevention and treatment of graft vs. host disease and sepsis, treatment of immunotherapy-induced colitis and restoration of the gut microbiome in survivors of childhood cancer.

General review of magnetic resonance elastography

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is an innovative imaging technique for the non-invasive quantification of the biomechanical properties of soft tissues via the direct visualization of propagating shear waves in vivo using a modified phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence. Fundamentally, MRE employs the same physical property that physicians utilize when performing manual palpation - that healthy and diseased tissues can be differentiated on the basis of widely differing mechanical stiffness. By performing “virtual palpation”, MRE is able to provide information that is beyond the capabilities of conventional morphologic imaging modalities. In an era of increasing adoption of multi-parametric imaging approaches for solving complex problems, MRE can be seamlessly incorporated into a standard MRI examination to provide a rapid, reliable and comprehensive imaging evaluation at a single patient appointment. Originally described by the Mayo Clinic in 1995, the technique represents the most accurate non-invasive method for the detection and staging of liver fibrosis and is currently performed in more than 100 centers worldwide. In this general review, the mechanical properties of soft tissues, principles of MRE, clinical applications of MRE in the liver and beyond, and limitations and future directions of this discipline -are discussed.
